Registration open for inaugural Pink Ribbon 5k Walk/Run

Bay Area Hospital staff and dedicated community members are ready to hit the ground running with the inaugural Pink Ribbon 5K Walk/Run.

Organizers are excited to bring a popular nationwide event to the South Coast community.

“We’ve been blanketing the town in iers,” said Bay Area Hospital’s Spiritual Care and Volunteer Coordinator Lindsay Moore. “It's going to be a great day – a great event – with a lot of camaraderie and support for each other, and it will be a fun time, too.”

The rst ever Pink Ribbon 5k Walk/Run to ght cancer will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at John Topits Park. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk/run will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. Proceeds

will bene t the patient support fund for the Bay Area Cancer Center.

Local resident Patti Harrington is a driving force behind the Pink Ribbon walk/ run. She actually got the ball rolling with the event after talking about it with friends at a local coffee shop. Moore just happened to be sitting behind her.

“I heard her say, ‘I have this idea. I want to support people that are going through cancer. I think we could do a run,’” Moore said.

The two instantly connected.

“It was one of those serendipitous moments,” Harrington said. “The Coos Bay/North Bend community is just wonderful. They are the best. They really, truly come together no matter what the circumstances.”

The local community members used their networks to

build a group of supporters.

“The more people that I approach about doing this 5K, the more I hear how breast cancer touches someone, somewhere. With every person that I speak with, their mother, their cousin, their grandmother, their sister, or their best friend, or even they have gone through treatments,” Harrington said.

Hospital staff members have been coming together to help organize the event, along with additional community members. The event organizers wanted to be able to show local residents who have gone through a breast cancer diagnosis that they are not alone. They have support.

“I think cancer is one of those times where it is super isolating. You get this diagnosis and it's like the camera pans

Dolphin Players present

‘The 39 Steps’

The Dolphin Players are presenting ‘The 39 Steps,’ a two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning play.

The comedy features a cast of four actors who take on more than 35 roles, bringing endless energy, laughs, and creativity to the stage.

‘The 39 Steps’ is based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan, famously adapted into a lm by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935.

The play parodies the lm's thrilling story of a man on the run after being wrongfully accused of murder. Audiences can expect an onstage plane crash, a train chase, handcuffs, missing ngers, and good old-fashioned romance.

Director Alice Carlson chose this play because of the unique challenge it presents in its theatrical presentation.

“It uses all conventions of theater to build the relationship between the actors and audience,” she said.

Each of the four cast members serve on the Dolphin Players' Board of Directors, a rst in the history of the playhouse.

The ensemble features Sam Baugh (most recently in The Complete Works of Shakespeare) as the lead, alongside Ariel Hicks (recently in Beauty and the Beast Panto), Alyson Lyons (also from the Beauty and the Beast and Complete Works of Shakespeare), and

Amber Nicole (most recently in the Salute to Heroes & Villains).

The performers promise an unforgettable evening of clever stagecraft and high-energy entertainment.

Performances take place over the weekends of Oct. 11 through 20, with curtain at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. for the Sunday matinee.

A special opening night event will take place on Friday, Oct. 10, which also marks an annual “Party at the Playhouse” fundraising event. Audiences can enjoy appetizers, beer, wine, raf es, and door prizes for $50, which also includes a ticket to the show. All proceeds support the Dolphin Players and their mission to bring quality theater to Coos Bay.

Tickets are $12 for regular admission, $10 for seniors and students, and $8 for children under 12.

The Dolphin Playhouse believes that theater should be accessible to everyone, which is why they offer a “Pay-WhatYou-Can” night—an opportunity for families and individuals on xed incomes to enjoy quality theatre by donation. Tickets are available online at thedolphinplayhouse.com or at the door for all performances except Oct. 10.

The Dolphin Playhouse is located at 580 Newmark Ave, in the Historic Empire District of Coos Bay.

cast of local actors and actresses are prepared to do just that.

Lisa Crew, retired Myrtle Point High School English and drama teacher, directs this production. It is her first time directing a play at the Liberty Theatre.

“They put out a call for directors and I decided to apply. Everything else just fell into place,” Crew said.

“I’m very grateful for the help putting together a really remarkable cast,” she said.

The latest Liberty Theatre production stars Tom Holt, Bex Truka, John Beane, and Nicole Freim, with supporting roles played by locals Talisman Slatick, Michele Moore, Melissa Reeves, Tim Novotny, Kris Yearsley, Maxen Pouncey, and Rebecca Pouncey.

The comedy is written by Neil Simon.

“It's hard to miss with

Neil Simon. He's a very extraordinary writer. So, with the right cast, you have an opportunity to put on a really fun show for the community,”

Crew said.

The ‘Rumors’ cast has been busy rehearsing for the production. It is made up of both seasoned Liberty Theatre performers, as well as new cast members.

They describe the production as “a constant circus act.”

“One of the funniest things about the show is the character dynamics,” said Talisman Slatick, who plays Ernie. “Despite most everyone being rich New Yorkers, they all have very diverse personalities that can't help but conflict in about every single line of dialogue.”

Bex Truka plays Chris Gorman, a “very high strung, nervous lawyer.”

“I'm really excited to be in the show,” Gorman said. “It's a really fun, fast-paced comedy, a

classic comedy, and it's got a really fantastic, skilled group of actors participating in the cast. It’s a joy to be a part of it.”

The play focuses on the relationships between the characters.

“At the core, each of these couples has a different thing going on that they are working out through the course of this chaos,” said John Beane, who plays Lenny Ganz. “Will everyone get through it? Hopefully with reputations and marriages intact.”

Rumors will be playing at the Liberty Theatre the weekend of Oct. 18 through 20 and Oct. 25 through 27.

Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at the door, online at www. thelibertytheatre.org or at the box office on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The box office phone number is 541756-4336.

Edna “Carol” Carolyn Smyth

August 19, 1943 – August 2, 2024

Bob bought a house in North Bend in 1953, living there for over 65 years with all ve of his children graduating from North Bend High School. He was an active member of the First Christian Church where he formed friendships that lasted the rest of his life. He served on the church board, was a xture at the front door on Sunday, greeting each churchgoer with his trademark sense of humor, and continued to help clean the church every Saturday well into his 90’s.

An avid pilot, Bob was also a xture at the North Bend airport, owning a series of single-engine planes. He loved to y whether it was an hour surveying the coastline from the

sky or a weekend trip north to take his kids to visit their grandmother. Bob and Florence moved in with their daughter and son-inlaw in Clackamas in December 2017 and sadly, Florence died just three weeks later. Although he missed her with all his heart, Bob fought hard to remain as active and independent as possible, handling his own household chores, delighting in the graduations, marriages, and babies of his grandchildren and making everyone he met laugh with his quick wit.

After a private graveside service on August 24, 2024, Bob was laid to rest, once again by his wife’s side, in Newberg’s Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery returning home to where he was born and where he met the love of his life. He is survived by four of his children, Ronald; Teri; Barbara and Michael; daughterin-law, Carol; son-in-law, Dino Moore; his six grandchildren, Tamara; Kristen; Daniel; Ronald; Joshua and Nathaniel; 16 great-grandchildren, one great-greatgrandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Janice in 1999.

A celebration of life for Edna “Carol” Carolyn Smyth (Shellenbarger), 80, of North Bend will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12, at the North Bend Community Center, 2222 Broadway Avenue in North Bend.

A Letter to the Editor (my grandfather) in the Nov. 12, 1953, Western World drew my attention, since my father was very involved in the cranberry industry while I was growing up.

The letter, from Ethel Kranick (later Reichenbach), reads:

"In last week's editorial column the question was asked 'Why don't the cranberry people take more active part in the Festival?' As a cranberry grower I shall try to answer that question.'

"In 1941 a war broke out, the men went to war. The women were called to industrial and war occupations. In this particular locality the lumber industry boomed because of the need for lumber -- and cranberry growers were left without labor to harvest their crops.

"Cranberry growers are not easily discouraged so they invented machines so they could harvest the berries themselves. They had to compete with wages paid lumber workers to get any help at all and that help is still very scarce. So, when festival time rolls around cranberry growers and their families are out struggling against time and weather to get their crops harvested ( rst photo) and when night comes they are too darn tired to get enthusiastic about festival, much as they would like to help.

"The festival idea was originated by the National Cranberry Association as an advertising stunt while overcoming a huge surplus that had depressed the market. Nearly all cranberry growers help to pay for the advertising found in the national magazines -so the advertising gained for the home town is not of monetary value to the grower.

"Do the rose growers run the Rose Festival?"

Kranick asked. The second item

appeared in the Jan. 5, 1922, Western World and was headlined "Good Advertising for City."

"As a source of advertising for Bandon the large beach views made by the Neptune Studio are unexcelled. Every one sent away to other parts of the country tells of Bandon's wonderful strand.

Bludell's this year gave out a large number of calendars containing such views (second photo) and it is understood that other business houses are also contemplating the use of such views next year. The Studio during the holidays sold over 200 such calendars to individuals who sent them away to friends. During the year Mr. Croxall made more than 600 enlargements of beach pictures alone and sold all of them."

The third picture I am sharing was taken in February of 1965 as my uncle, L. L. Felsheim, publisher of Western World, presents a $5 check to Mrs. Earl (Norma) Handsaker as a Molly McKay winner, which was a contest sponsored by the paper (see item below).

A number of people saw the accident which occurred Friday at approximately 4:30 on Highway 101 near the museum. Police Chief Cory Dhillon said that 39-year-old Ian Ward was operating a white Ford truck that veered into oncoming traf c and impacted a Suzuki SUV driven by 40-year-old Tyson Smith. Ward was arrested at the scene for DUI.

"However, there is a mental health component that is under investigation in regards to Ward," said the chief. He said Ward was driving a vehicle registered in Arizona.

I read on Facebook that there was a wreck at the Highway 10142S intersection about 5 p.m. Sunday, but I have no details about

As I See It

that. I do know that the northbound lane was closed for some time because of the wreck.

For those of you who used to shop in Coquille at Barrow Drug, you will be sorry to learn that the long-time owner/pharmacist Bob Blomquist was killed in a three-vehicle wreck Sept. 18 in Washington County. Blomquist was 72 and lived in Sherwood. Among his survivors is his wife, Judy.

A 61-year-old resident of Royal Dornoch Road, Bandon, Monte Miille was arrested Sept. 25 shortly before 8 p.m. for Hit and Run, Reckless Driving and DUII near Whiskey Run Beach.

Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a hit and run incident near the beach access to Whiskey Run Beach. Sgt. Adam Slater and Bandon Of cer Zach Carpenter located the suspect vehicle, a gray Ford Focus, on Highway 101. The deriver exhibited a strong odor of alcohol and displayed clear signs of impairment. Further inquiries revealed that Miille had collided with another vehicle and had been driving recklessly while being pursued by a concerned citizen. He was booked, processed and lodged at the Coos County jail.

People who have tried to contact the Bandon Police Department's nonemergent number after hours may now realize that the call was answered by the Coos Bay Police Department rather than the Coos County Sheriff's Of ce dispatch.

The County Dispatch Center is no more, explained Bandon Police Chief Cory Dhillon. Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio explained earlier that the center fell below minimum manpower levels. Contracts are being drafted where Coos Bay absorbs Coos County's contract and remaining dispatchers, said the Chief.

"The Sheriff's Of ce is

paying for the purchase and installation of the new data system (for Bandon and contracted municipalities) for this year," said the Chief.

The bottom line is simply that when you call 9-1-1 your call will be answered, but the dispatcher will be working for the Coos Bay Police Department rather than the Sheriff's Of ce.

A member of the former Holiday Meals committee announced recently that there will be no community holiday meals this year because no one could be found to chair the event.

The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a candidate forum Thursday night, Oct. 10, at the Bandon Community Center/ Barn. The forum for mayor candidates Mary Schamehorn and Angela Cardas will be held between 6 and 7 p.m.

The forum for council candidates Geri Procetto, Claudine Hundhausen, Bear Slothower and Archie Garrett will be between 7 and 8 p.m.

Council candidate Shauna Schmerer has a con ict and will not attend.

I was sorry to learn that Norma Handsaker, 88, a long-time resident of Bandon, died Sept. 26 in her sleep of kidney and heart failure. A Celebration of her Life will be held Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. at Paci c Community Church. Among her survivors are her son Lance and daughter Sandra. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl and son Mark. Well known for her culinary achievements, Norma had been Queen of the Kitchen for the Cranberry Festival, among her other accomplishments.

Center will sponsor the Oct. 8 Meet and Greet, although they have not yet announced the subject. The third Tuesday in October, the 15th, is available. If you have an idea for a speaker, contact Lori Osborne at Bandon Fisheries Warehouse.

I will be the speaker at the Oct. 22 Meet and Greet, when I talk about the history of hospitals in Bandon, and the reason why we went ve years without a hospital after a group

of residents prevented the building of the new hospital (overlooking the lighthouse) by ling a lawsuit...which went all the way to the Oregon Supreme Court.

"The Return of the Night at the Museum" will take place at Bandon's History Museum Thursday, Oct. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $10, with hors d'oeuvres by Sharon Haga, wine and beer provided by Lori Osborne, and a chance to take a special "History Detective's Challenge" as part of the evening.

Contact Gayle at the museum to purchase advance tickets, although limited tickets will be available at the door. More info at 541-3472164.

People are reminded of the free Drive-Through Flu and Covid shot clinic, sponsored by Southern Coos Hospital, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, in City Park, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 2 or until vaccines run out.

The annual brush and yard debris pickup begins Monday, Oct. 6.

Don't forget the Red Fish Concert at Holy

Trinity Catholic Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Tickets are $20.

Thought I would share another "Week in the Life of the Mayor" which includes receiving a call from Sandy Messerle asking if I would like to appear on Cam Parry's Hooked on Oregon radio program (KWRO), and we agreed I would be on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 3 p.m. I received a letter from Southern Oregon University in Ashland in request for information about an archaeology dig some years ago on the gravel lot in Old Town;

talked with the police chief about slanderous posts on Facebook and got the true story of what had happened; attended a Meet and Greet to learn more about SEA's Marine Garden; prepared for and attended a hospital board meeting; prepared and presented a talk on the Bandon Fire to the Bandon Rotary, and on Saturday, prepared and presented a talk on the Fire at the Bandon Museum. I also heard a request for a stop sign on Seabird Drive aimed at slowing down the traf c, and I asked that

it be put on the council's agenda. Discussed with a constituent a change to the city's ordinance requiring that a hotel (in Old Town or elsewhere) be required to provide one parking spot for each room, instead of the one parking spot for every two rooms as is now required, which would destroy what little parking exists in Old Town. And that was a slow week ....

The rainfall for the month of August was less than half an inch, at .045 inches.

Coos Commissioners Approve New Bandon Golf Course

County commissioners have accepted an appeal of a county planning commission decision approving a new golf course south of Bandon and have set a hearing date. Commissioners took the action at their regular meeting on Oct. 1. Commissioners will conduct the public hearing at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the their chambers in the Owen Building, 201 N. Adams St. They will consider the record of the planning commission’s decision and accept additional testimony.

Ocean River LLC of Bandon applied for a conditional use permit in April to establish the 18-hole regulation golf course with accessory uses in the exclusive farm use zone. The application for the New River Dunes Golf Course was signed by Michael L. Keiser, who owns the property.

Keiser said in his application the accessory uses would include a clubhouse/restaurant, a maintenance facility, restrooms, a caddy shack, driving range, practice course and parking.

The application show the proposed development would be on about 340 acres west of U.S. Highway 101 and south of Boak Lane, which would be the primary access to the property. The links would be on a long, narrow strip of property

that extends south from Boak Lane between cranberry bogs and the Bandon State Natural Area. The southern end of the proposed golf course would be directly west of Bandon Crossings Golf Course, which occupies land on the east side of the highway.

The county planning commission conducted a public hearing on the application last summer and the county planning department published the commission’s decision approving the golf course in August.

Later that month, the Oregon Coast Alliance (ORCA), based in Astoria, appealed the planning commission’s decision, which has resulted in the hearing before the county commissioners on Oct. 23.

Cameron La Follette, ORCA’s executive director, said her organization appealed the decision to get an additional hearing. ORCA is an advocacy organization. Among other things, it  strives to protect the Oregon coast by working with coastal residents for sustainable communities, protecting and restoring  coastal and marine natural resources, according to its website. ORCA was represented by a Eugene attorney, Sean T. Malone, at the public hearings last summer.

Malone wrote in his prepared documents that ORCA objects to the proposed golf course because, among other

things:

— the proposed development is on land zoned as high value farm use.

— the applicant has not demonstrated that the subject lots were created legally under the Coos County Zoning Ordinance.

— the application lacks detail about the location of structures.

— the applicant has not submitted a hydrology report that demonstrates no signi cant impact on neighboring farm uses, groundwater, wells, etc.

In an interview, La Follette said Keiser has been trying to build a golf course in this area for a decade. He originally tried to acquire neighboring state land for the project, she said, but ORCA strongly opposed that effort and Keiser dropped the proposal.

In 2022, she said, Keiser applied to build the golf course on his own land. The planning commission approved the project, but ORCA appealed because it was proposed on land zoned for exclusive farm use.

Keiser withdrew the application last year, La Follette said.

This year, Keiser created Ocean River LLC in a renewed effort to build the New River Dunes Golf Course.

“This is a new application this year,” she said. “He created a new company to split off high-value farm land and the proposed golf course on 340 acres not high-value farm land.”
