MISSION AND MERIT Founded in 1967, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is a not-for-profit
A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
educational institution that collects, preserves, and interprets the evolving history and traditions of country music. Functioning as a national history museum and international arts organization, we are among the ten most-visited history museums
A mission is both a journey and a calling. This Museum’s journey is epic, and our calling profound. We collect and preserve the history of a vital American art form, and we delight, surprise, and educate an audience that stretches from downtown Nashville across the globe. We lift spirits and raise voices. We honor and empower. We assure that songs well-sung and lives well-lived resonate through the ages. The past year of our journey has been momentous, emotional, and ratifying. There were amazing performances, from famous artists and from East Los Angeles school children who crafted a stirring song with the great Liz Rose. There was amazing outreach from a staff that offers musical expression as a vital tool for living. And there was the most amazing of graces, the sweetest of sounds, when Hall of Fame inductee Randy Travis sang for the first time in three long and difficult years. Thank you for enabling this journey, for believing in this calling, and for sustaining this mission.
Sincerely,
Kyle Young
in the United States. Since 1987, our stewardship of the treasures we hold in trust has earned us coveted accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, a national mark of distinction signifying excellence in operations and impact.
“The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has faithfully executed its mission in Nashville, Tennessee, across five decades and several generations. With your unwavering support, we tirelessly pursue the Museum’s American dream of growth and prosperity for the advancement of country music and for all who cherish this powerful, popular, and important art form.” Steve Turner, Chairman, Board of Officers and Trustees
THE COLLECTION The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s ever-expanding collection comprises 2.5 million artifacts, which range from performance costumes and recorded music to videos and songwriter manuscripts. It is considered to be the finest and most complete of its kind in the world. As a matter of public trust, we accept the enormous responsibility of protecting this invaluable and unmatched collection that chronicles the American musical experience rooted in Southern culture, and we rely on it as the inspiration and foundation for all our activities, from exhibitions to educational programs.

COLLECTING, PROTECTING, AND EXHIBITING HISTORY
THE EXHIBITIONS In 2016, the Museum presented twelve limited-run feature exhibitions, which incorporated previously unseen artifacts and presented new scholarship. Three of these exhibitions showcased members of the Country Music Hall of Fame and examined their indelible musical impact. They included multi-platinum-selling band Alabama, Southern rocker Charlie Daniels, and Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. Six exhibitions shined bright lights on current hit makers, chronicling the lives and careers of Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, and the Zac Brown Band. In the ACM Gallery, we showcased 2015’s milestones in country music, from the NBC movie Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors and Kelsea Ballerini’s chart-topping singles to landmark Grammy wins for Chris Stapleton and Glen Campbell. The Museum extended through 2017 the run of the award-winning exhibition Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City, which identifies Nashville’s top-flight session players of the late ’60s and early ’70s and the diverse artists who came to town to record with them. Instruments were celebrated as functional works of art in American Sound and Beauty: Guitars from the Bachman-Gretsch Collection.

COLLECTION
LOCAL AND GLOBAL COMMUNITIES Through over 1,000 unique programs, ranging from guided tours of our galleries for school groups and family workshops that offer basic instruction in the playing of country music’s central instruments to conversations with artists, songwriters, and personalities, our Museum educators directly served 97,000 people in 2016— around the corner and across the globe. In Nashville and Davidson County, the Museum’s school programs reached more than 10 percent of the city’s school-age population, and students from 46 Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools participated in our educational programs free of charge. The Museum’s Words & Music program, which offers an intensive lyric-writing curriculum for students, reached more than 9,000 youth last year and was honored with the American Alliance of Museums’ Award for Excellence. Words & Music connects students from all parts of the country with Nashville’s creative community.

EDUCATION
ALL FOR THE HALL Directly benefiting the Museum’s educational programs, our sold-out All for the Hall concerts filled Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena in April and traveled to Los Angeles in September. Keith Urban and Vince Gill headlined Mashville: The Music City in 2016, the Bridgestone show, which featured performances from Florida Georgia Line, Peter Frampton, Emmylou Harris, Sam Hunt, Jason Isbell, Chris Janson, Tracy Lawrence, Maren Morris, and Maddie & Tae. September’s intimate guitar pull featured Gill, Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton, James Taylor, and Joe Walsh at The Novo in the LA Live complex. Together, these shows netted more than $850,000 for Museum educational programs.

2016 MEDALLION CEREMONY Country-rock pioneer Charlie Daniels, Monument Records founder Fred Foster, and neo-traditional singer Randy Travis were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame during a star-studded, profoundly emotional Medallion Ceremony on October 16, 2016. These three visionary iconoclasts, whose creative skills altered the direction of commercial country music, were celebrated with speeches, musical tributes, and original videos that incorporated photos, interviews, and performances drawn from the Museum’s Frist Library and Archive.
“I am honored to join those before me, and humbled
to go ahead of those that will follow into country music’s Hall of Fame: no greater award could I ask to receive.” Randy Travis, 2016 Inductee
