But fear not, because this year, we’re sending you on a mission to start your local Christmas shopping early! Trust us, your sanity and your feet will thank you later. Plus, who needs a marathon sprint through the Christmas shopping madness when you can sip a fine rioja by the fire? Inside this issue, we’ve got gift ideas that will have even Santa’s elves green with envy. And a look at the St Benedicts and Lanes area of Norwich will certainly give you plenty of gift inspiration. Theatre calls out to those ready to step into new role: offering their support as an Ambassador As well as the fantastic shows they are renowned for bringing to the region Norwich Theatre offers creative experiences across the board, from nurturing local talent to take part sessions with babies, people living with dementia, refugees and communities. “We are committed to providing and celebrating creativity in the region: at every level of engagement and across every kind of experience,” said Stephen Crocker, Norwich Theatre Chief Executive & Creative Director. “We work with charity, school and artistic partners to create projects that support and enhance emotional wellbeing, develop skills, and inspire ambition. We take our creative experiences into the community to reach those who cannot access theatre by traditional means. We have programmes like My Theatre and bursaries to enable free and lowcost opportunities to take part in our creative experiences.”
In recognition of its supporters’ significant role, Norwich Theatre has recently launched its Ambassador scheme. The scheme makes supporting Norwich Theatre easy and effective. Ambassadors are taken to the heart of what the Theatre does with special events, exclusive benefits and behind-the-scenes access. By making an annual commitment, Ambassadors help Norwich Theatre provide access to creative exploration and encourage creative togetherness.
“We are keen to welcome new Ambassadors to Norwich Theatre. Together, we can inspire creativity, whether on stage or in schools; improve people’s wellbeing and bring communities together; and show the Norwich Theatre is unique because world just how creative Norfolk is and it is not subsidised by any public sources. Norwich Theatre and its coproducing partner Valid Productions are delighted to announce their 2024 tour of On Before, which includes an international stop at Sarasota (FL) Opera House. The production will open for two nights at Festival Theatre, Edinburgh before touring to Theatre Royal Plymouth, Birmingham Hippodrome and Buxton Opera House as part of the Buxton International Festival. First conceived by Carlos Acosta in 2010, On Before is an intensely personal evening of dance created, directed, and performed by the legendary Cuban dancer. On Before pays homage to Acosta’s late mother and is the most personal work he has ever created. This show was the first that Norwich Theatre ever took on tour. In 2021 this was a bold statement of intent for its future ambitions to originate and produce small and large-scale work itself and take its creativity wider. Norwich Theatre’s ability to produce and co-produce new work, such as this, and the summer musical hit, The Land of Might-Have-Been, is supported by its Ambassador scheme. Dedicated Ambassadors were recognised for their support of Carlos’ production, with special invitations and the opportunity to meet the creative team, to thank them for their involvement. Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, Stephen Crocker said: “It is always joyous and inspirational to work with Carlos and this project is very special for Norwich Theatre not only because of the show itself, but the spirit of bravery, ambition and commitment to dance that it embodies.”

Places&Faces catches up with Coronation Street icon Beverley Callard who plays the Evil Fairy in Norwich Theatre’s pantomime Sleeping Beauty, The Fairy’s Tale
Beverley Callard spent 32 years pulling pints behind the bar of the Rovers Return as Liz MacDonald in Coronation Street. But now she will be pulling the strings as the Evil Fairy in Norwich Theatre’s pantomime Sleeping Beauty, The Fairy’s Tale. Charlotte Nelson sat down with Beverley to find out what life was like on the cobblestones, calling Norfolk home and why playing the baddie is so fun!
The readers are most likely to remember your role as Liz on Coronation Street. What is it like to play a character for so long? I played Liz for 32 years. I loved playing her. The scripts were amazing, and she was never boring, ever. I had so many storylines over the years, particularly with Liz’s husband, Jim, the mad Irishman. One storyline that springs to mind is the time Jim battered Liz, and I had to lie in the snow in a backless Lycra mini dress. I have never been so cold in my life! For those episodes, we got 27.2 million viewers. Why did you decide to leave? I just decided it was time mainly, and I needed to do other things. I wouldn’t have been able to do panto, for example, but it was a massive decision. I also don’t have to prance around in a Wonderbra and a mini skirt again, which is great, I can tell you. You now call Norfolk home, which is quite far away from those cobblestones. It most definitely is! When Jon and I were looking for somewhere to live, we stayed with friends who live here, and as we were driving back home, we both said to each other ‘this is amazing’. And that was that. We now have the best of both worlds: we are 25 minutes from Norwich to do our shopping and the lovely countryside surrounds us.
You are playing the Evil Fairy. Are you looking forward to it? I cannot wait! I am trying to remember when I was last on stage. It was the Rocky Horror Show back in 2019. I always get nervous for the dress rehearsal and the first show. I stand in the wings and think, why did I say yes to this? But once you get over that, it is the best feeling in the world, it really is, especially when you play the baddie. Ah! So, you are a fan of an evil character? I am always the baddie every time I do panto. I wouldn’t want to play the Fairy Godmother, and I think I might be a bit old for a Princess. But they are always so... good! The baddies are just so much more interesting I think, and the more boos I get, the better. How do you celebrate Christmas? I am like a child at Christmas. I absolutely love it. We have five grown-up children and six grandchildren, so it is really difficult to get everyone together. But if it is Christmas with us, we hide presents, and Jon does Christmas dinner. He is brilliant at it! Are you excited to spend your Christmas at Norwich Theatre? It is fantastic. Normally, if you are doing panto, you are away from home. So, I have got the best of everything. I will be doing a panto, but I can sleep in my own bed at night, which is amazing. That doesn’t usually happen in theatre.
Beverley Callard will be starring in Sleeping Beauty, The Fairy’s Tale at Norwich Theatre Royal between 9 Dec-7 Jan. For more information or to book, visit norwichtheatre.org or call the Box Office on 01603 630 000.
Quickfire Norfolk Questions FAVOURITE ATTRACTION The Broads. Every time someone comes to visit us (we have a lot of visitors!) we have always hired a boat. Even in the winter, we just love that. I think the Broads is therapy. It is so peaceful. FAVOURITE SHOP I love Jarrolds because it is one of the few independent department stores in the UK now, and I want it to be there forever. I also love the market in Norwich. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the market, it is fantastic. FAVOURITE EXPORT Norfolk Wine is very good. I love the wine at Chett Valley. After the show, I will be partial to a drink or two. I might bring a bottle for my dressing room. | 11

we go down the festive rabbit hole, where should we be heading? We start with Quiz, at Theatre Royal Norwich between 31 October-4 November. Many may remember the thrilling story in 2001 when the millionpound jackpot was won on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and from there a scandal ensued. photography Norwich Works are to be exhibited for the first time in 70 years. Open until 14 April 2024, see over 130 original photographic prints representing three key Norwich Works: shoemaking at Edwards & Holmes’ Esdelle Works; steel construction, wood working and wire netting at Boulton & Paul’s Riverside Works; and sweet making at CaleyMackintosh’s Chapelfield Works. Taken between 1948 and 1961, the record of life post-war captures the craft and industry of the subjects and their labours and document a city striving to rebuild itself economically after the war. The images are truly incredible work. And are both a fascinating record of this key period in British social history and timeless works of art in their own right. Tickets are included in general museum entry. I can’t not mention the return of Norwich Cathedral’s historic organ. Over a decade in the planning of its restoration, the organ is now back in its rightful place.

socks blown off! Hot on the heels of one extravaganza comes Northern Ballet’s Beauty and the Beast. This summer, Norwich Castle saw over 70,000 people through their door for The Gloucester exhibition. With this welcome return follows a trio of celebratory concerts taking place on Saturday 11 November, Thursday 16 November and Saturday 25 November plus a Festal Evensong service during which the Bishop of Norwich, the Right Revd Graham Usher, will bless the newly rebuilt organ (Sunday 26 November). For concert tickets, see the cathedral website for details. Those with a keen eye will have noticed Christmas products on the shelves back in September (in fact, in the same month, I saw hot cross buns too!) and big brands sending us early festive e-newsletters. Yes, I got the message. But with the cost-of-living crisis hitting many people hard last year and pretty much the same again this year, retailers are encouraging consumers to start shopping early in order to spread the cost. I know lots of us will not see November as early for Christmas shopping, but let’s face it, a number will still leave it to the week before the big day itself to get the gifting in! So, with that in mind, I say try and plan when you shop for your presents, it not only keeps you on top of things, but it also makes the whole experience much more enjoyable. And it can, and should, be enjoyable.
Christmas markets are one of the most popular things to do. In fact, the VisitNorwich website sees site traffic from mid-summer looking for information about Christmas markets. Norwich, unlike other cities in the UK, does not have one huge annual Christmas market taking over the city centre. Many of which have proved to be the victim of their own success, becoming so popular that it’s actually hard to shop. Instead, Norwich has a great selection of smaller, more artisanal markets, pretty much every weekend from mid-November until late December. Small enough to get around comfortably, large enough to give us a good choice of shopping options. One of the best, and largest, is the Festive Fair at the Forum which this year takes place between 23-26 November. Four whole days of gorgeous East Anglian things-to-buy from jewellery, pottery, textiles, woodcraft, glassware, art, preserves, calendars, cards, prints, Christmas decorations, chocolates, candles, cakes, brownies, clothes, soap and much more. But it’s not just about what you can buy. It’s also about the ambience. The Festive Fair is a great place to pick up warming festive takeaway food and drink, with joyful Christmas music playing
in the background. I especially love the Christmas carols from Norfolk’s own Pavilion Brass Quintet, who will be playing festive tunes outside The Forum on each of the four days. And in the true spirit of Christmas, the Fair also raises money for local charity, Keeping Abreast. Staying with ambience, Thursford’s Christmas Spectacular returns for its 46th year with John Cushing OBE still at the helm producing it. The 2023 show will boast a new state-of-the-art sound system using revolutionary object positioning software to create a more immersive experience for audiences. In fact, the installation rivals some of the best shows in the West End. It also has a cast of 130 performing across the 135ft purpose-built stage. The Christmas Spectacular remains the largest Christmas show of its kind in Europe and with it on our doorstep, it would be madness not to go. There are two shows a day at 2pm and 7pm lasting 3 hours. Tickets start at £43 (weekday evenings) and the show is suitable for ages 8 years and above, performances take place between 8 November and 23 December.
Don’t miss : Taking the children to Santa’s Magical Journey at Thursford, which now includes entry to the Enchanted Journey of Light too. The clue is in the name, this is really magical for any age and includes all manner of delightful things to see and experience. There’s also a Relaxed Day on Friday 8th December between 2pm4.45pm where numbers will be reduced, and music and lighting will be softer. A spectacular festive tea at The Assembly House, The Nutcracker Afternoon Tea returns (1 November-8 January 2024). My First: The Night Before Christmas! Every year The Garage in Norwich has a show especially for the really little ones in our lives. This is an interactive show for 0-4 years between 28 November and 31 December. Tickets cost £12.50 with some shows offering BSL and relaxed performances. Full details of everything mentioned here and loads more ideas can be found at www.visitnorwich.co.uk

To coin
a popular phrase, holidays are coming! Ding dong merrily on high! And although it seems to roll around quicker every year (Christmas stuff at the end of August? Have a word Lidl), now is the time to get down to some festive cheer. However, if the thought of the imminent season coming to punch you in the wallet doesn’t instill joy to your world, it could be time for a factory reset harder than the most recent Sugababes lineup. Dial down on the spends and tune in on the spirit of gift giving by utilising some simple ideas to stop money worries derailing your Christmas faster than a Just Stop Oil protest.
and away you go; with the inherent saving of cutting ten gifts down to one. Just maybe think twice about the edible underwear. Some things have never been funny.
MAKE OR REGIFT
When I say regifting, I’m not suggesting you wrap up that bottle of perfume you opened but the scent of it gave you the ick. But then again, if you did
Got a book you couldn’t put down but also have a to-read list longer than Inspector Gadget’s arm, why not share that paperback with a friend? SECRET SANTA
You know it, you’ve probably been involved in such office-based shenanigans that have seen Andy from accounts smiling through the pain of a musical pen or Lucy from reception receiving a passive aggressive slogan mug that refers to her indifferent telephone manner. But the concept is more adaptable than single use novelties. If you have a large family or an extensive group of friends, you can easily minimise costs by enrolling everyone in a Secret Santa. You can go old school and pick names from a hat or you can adopt 21st Century advances and allow the internet to assist you. www.elfster.com has a free to use Secret Santa generator that will allocate names for you. Set a budget of your choice, a date to exchange presents
receive a bottle of claret vino you’ll never drink because red wine tastes like sucking on loose change, why not pass it along to your Merlot-loving friend? Got a book you couldn’t put down but also have a to-read list longer than Inspector Gadget’s arm, why not share that paperback with a friend? Gifted an ugly tie that is right up unhinged Uncle Bob’s street? You know what to do with it. It’s less ‘I don’t want this’ and more ‘they’ll love this’ vibes. If regifting isn’t your scene, why not make something? Knit it, bake it, brew a batch of homemade gin. It’s easy enough to forage sloe berries and infuse them with sugar and spirits before distributing into Kilner jars. Or bake and decorate some personalised cookies. www.bbcgoodfood.com has plenty of recipes to give food for festive thought. Get the kids involved.
Not in the gin-making part; and only dispense that to those of legal age. But if you have some underage Picassos in your custody, get them to draw some pictures and make a 2024 calendar for nan. Use an app like Free Prints – where you only pay for postage – and create a photo collage. Paint a pot and pot a plant for the chlorophyll inclined. Play to your strengths and their interests for maximum festive cheer. And don’t worry family of mine, I promise not to pass off my culinary misdemeanors as baked goods this year.
BE THE GIFT
Not in the literal sense. No-one wants to adopt a 38-year-old with a penchant for Meg Ryan movies and a troublesome relationship with carbs. Trust me, I’ve asked around. Rather, give your time. Let’s be honest, when the end of your days roll around, you won’t be thinking about all the socks you unwrapped on Christmas morning. The greatest gift you can give is good memories. And the good news is time is free! Unless you’re Elon Musk and if he’s honest with himself, he could probably use his more wisely. Swap out those slippers and offer to take someone out for a coffee. Draw up some babysitting coupons for that couple you know who could use the break. Cut grandad’s lawn and play some Scrabble. Mutually agree to forgo presents with friends in the name of a dinner date. Get dressed up and fall in some bushes after a seasonal bottomless brunch. For 2023, it’s giving presence, not presents. So, give yourself the gift of declining debt and avoid the contact sport that is Christmas shopping by realigning the meaning of gift giving. Give a little bit of you for Christmas; even Mariah Carey isn’t asking for more. | 17

by Emily Henry Every year for the last decade Harriet and Wyn and their closest group of friends whisk away to Maine for their annual getaway. Only this year everything is different. Harriet and Wyn have broken up and none of their friends know. When their yearly holiday becomes a wedding for two of their friends, Harriet and Wyn decide to keep their break up a secret – how hard can sharing a room and fakedating your ex-fiancé really be? Emily Henry always brings her A-game when it comes to romance and Happy Place is no exception. It was Henry’s stellar reputation with romance that drew me to this book and she did not disappoint. Happy Place is a must-read for anyone yearning for their next pageturner with to-die-for friendships and a truly fantastic romance.

Sometimes
nothing beats a great romance book. Take a step back from that murder-mystery novel, the psychological thriller with a jawdropping plot twist and pick up a steamy romance to raise your standards for love to an unreachable level.
Magnolia Parks
by Jessa Hastings Magnolia Parks and BJ Ballentine are meant to be together and everyone knows it. Torn apart by BJ’s unforgivable actions, Magnolia and BJ toe the line of their devastating relationship and fight to keep the other at bay – Magnolia by dating every rich socialite in London and BJ by partying and “seeing” other girls. Jessa Hastings blurred the world of London socialites with the extravagance of a gossip girl lifestyle. This series gave and gave and gave. From the first page Magnolia and BJ’s toxic whirlwind relationship is all-consuming. The drama, the love triangles, the toxicity of their relationship all add an addicting component to the narrative. I could not put this book down or the entire series! All four books with a fifth to be released in January, the Magnolia Parks Universe is a must-read.

Reminders of Him
by Colleen Hoover After five years in prison for a tragic mistake Kenna Rowan returns to her home town hoping to reunite with her fouryear old daughter. The only person in the town willing to give Kenna a chance is Ledger Ward: one of the few remaining connections to Kenna’s daughter. But as Kenna and Ledger grow closer both run the risk of losing everyone around them. Reminders of Him is potentially Colleen Hoover’s most emotional novel to date. The complexity of grief and life after loss in tandem with the romance in this novel makes it all the more heart-breaking. Through Kenna, Hoover explores the bounds of love and the lengths to which a mother will go for their child.
You & Me on Vacation
by Emily Henry You and Me on Vacation follows best friends Poppy and Alex over the course of ten summers in which they navigate their friendship and ever-growing feelings towards each other. But two years have passed since Poppy and Alex have spoken, and when Poppy is given the chance for one last trip she extends the olive branch that might just fix their broken friendship. When the lines of their friendship start to blur Alex and Poppy struggle to find their way to one another or face leaving each other behind for good. You and Me on Vacation is a gorgeous will they, won’t they romance that keeps the reader on their toes through every page.
Icebreaker
by Hannah Grace Hannah Grace’s debut novel Icebreaker quickly became a TikTok sensation due to the sizzling romance between the main characters. Grace plays perfectly on the sports romance genre with Anastasia, a competitive ice skater, and her romantic counterpart Nathan Hawkins: a renowned hockey player at their university. Forced to train together after the university skating rink breaks, Anastasia and Nathan fall into the whirlwind of romance, competition and the pressure of making it big in the Olympics. It’s easy to see why Icebreaker became such a hit on TikTok due to Grace’s strong female lead and the very steamy romance.
Andy Newman is getting to grips with the language of wine
UVC Chablis, 2021, (£16, Sainsbury’s) The Union des Viticultueurs de Chablis brings together nearly 300 winegrowers from the region in one of the region’s largest co-operatives. This is a decent typical Chablis, combining a rich, flinty minerality with tart green apple, citrus and slightly earthy notes. Good value.
“I’m
getting wet foxes in the undergrowth.” The comment, made by a man with his nose deep inside a mature Pinot Noir from Burgundy during a tasting I was leading, elicited several sniggers from his fellow tasters, but you knew exactly what he meant. The earthy, gamey, vegetal aroma is absolutely typical of the grape and the region, and he had encapsulated it in five well-chosen words. The fact that his accurate, if somewhat poetic description had caused some mirth highlights the difficulty in describing the smells and tastes of a wine adequately in mere words. Many of us of a certain age remember well the flowery descriptors used by early TV wine expert Jilly Goulden, who introduced phrases such
produces a wine which belies its origin in this way: Muscat. It is important to be able to describe what we are tasting (and more importantly, smelling). With an almost infinitesimal combination of grapes, terroirs, wine-making techniques, vintages and so on, every wine is different. If we are to understand what it is about certain wines that
Even if your vocabulary doesn’t quite stretch to wet foxes in the undergrowth, I would urge you to try and find the right words to describe what you are tasting as ‘pencil-shavings’ into the wine taster’s lexicon. She too was much mocked for her expansive wine vocabulary. I am often asked by inexperienced tasters why such language is necessary. Surely, they reason, a drink which is made entirely from fermented grape juice will smell, and taste, of grapes? It is one of the mysteries of the wine world that in fact there is only one out of the thousands of grape varieties which
wines I have enjoyed this month
appeals to our individual tastes, we have to try and articulate those differences. This is why smell is so important – we can only taste four/five things (sweet, sour, salt and bitter, plus the elusive umami), whereas our noses are much more discerning, able to make out thousands of difference nuances of aroma. Broadly, the ‘nose’ of a wine will fall into four categories: fruit, floral, spice and vegetal.
But within each category there are many sub-divisions. For example, if it’s fruit you are getting, is it citrus, or berries, or apple, or tropical? And a well-made wine will be complex, with elements of more than one category on the nose. If you can fathom out what you are smelling, you can start to make connections with other wines, widening your net and enjoying a greater variety as you go. Even if your vocabulary doesn’t quite stretch to wet foxes in the undergrowth, I would urge you to try and find the right words to describe what you are tasting, and to make notes as you go. This forces you to concentrate, and to delve more deeply into the complexity of the wine – and it is doing this that you will gain the most enjoyment from the glass, which should be what it’s all about. Of course, the language of wine can veer into the pretentious, or even the plain ridiculous. I once heard someone describe a wine as smelling of ‘left-handed woodlouse’. I think he was poking fun at a fellow taster’s exuberant descriptions (it was quite late on in the tasting), but you can never be sure.
Villa Borghetti Valpolicella Ripasso, 2021 (£12.99 as part of a mixed case of six bottles, Majestic) Ripasso is the way to get some of the richness of Amarone without breaking the bank. They ‘pass’ the wine over the leftover grape skins from the Amarone wines, turning standard light Valpolicella into a supple, full-bodied wine with notes of Morello cherries, blueberries, liquorice and chocolate.
Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva, 2019 (£14.99 as part of a mixed case of six bottles, Majestic) Rioja Reserva has spent at least a year ageing in oak and then another two years in the bottle before it is released for sale, so will always have a depth of flavour which is sometimes missing in ‘standard’ Rioja. At Marques de Riscal they go further than that: the wine, which is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, spends 25 months in American oak barrels, giving it a complex aroma of spices, leather, plums and cocoa. | 21

Norwich Lanes is one of the city’s big success stories. Sarah Hardy takes a stroll around the alleyways and courtyards for a spot of Xmas shopping and fun!
Norwich Lanes,

or simply just The Lanes, is a mecca for independent shops, whether you’re after fashion forward pieces, something trendy for your home or some exciting foodie options. Around 500 independent businesses make up The Lanes, with a university, a couple of theatres, a cinema, live music venues and two museums helping to create a very rich, vibrant atmosphere. Much is pedestrianised, making for a more pleasant experience, and as Jonty Young, chair of the Norwich Lanes Association, a voluntary community organisation, explains almost all units are always full. ‘One went in just two days; we are very much a success story for the city, and I think that is largely because of the community here - we all work together to achieve the very best we can.’

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights: The flagship store in The Lanes is Jarrolds, where the Food Hall just goes from strength to strength. Run by the dynamic Judith Finney, it stocks a mixture of first class local produce, its exciting own brand of goodies, plus a comprehensive selection of British and Continental offerings. The Cheese Room boasts a wide selection of cheeses from around the world, and be sure to make time for a platter of cheeses and charcuterie at the Wine Bar - with a glass of something nice, too! GIFT IDEA: The selection of hampers is mouth watering.

He continues: ‘It’s the largest city centre independent shopping area in the whole of the UK, and, as most owners are almost always in their own shops, they can offer all their knowledge and passion. And I think we appeal to different generations - younger people like to spend the day here and older people tell us it is like shopping in the olden days!’ Mel Cook, PR and Marketing Manager at VisitNorwich, echoes this, saying: ‘What I love about The Lanes is that it’s not just wonderful independent shops and eateries but rather a real community of galleries, venues and places you need in your life like hairdressers and Thorns DIY. And if you take a closer look, you find incredible architecture, undercrofts, and exquisite pavement slabs which offer up historic references. You learn as you walk, with red posts on street corners with carvings on the top, and blue plaques about people from Norwich with very interesting stories. Norwich Lanes offer so much more than initially meets the eye.’ As Christmas approaches, it’s the place to find something a little different as a present and it is also a great place to celebrate the festive period as there are many exciting bars, cafes and restaurants. There’s even a hotel so you can make a mini break of it all.
Where to stay? St Giles House Hotel is a stunning looking place and it’s not bad inside, either! There are 24 bedrooms, some are dog friendly, and the afternoon teas are a real treat.
GIFT IDEA: Order a bespoke showstopper for a loved one or to impress your Christmas house guests.
Is there a good coffee stop? There are several. Kofra on Upper St Giles classes itself as a high end coffee roaster so expect big things!
For lovers of Italian cuisine? Amaretto on St George’s Street, run by Fabrizio Fiaschi from Tuscany, stocks a good selection of both Italian and Spanish foods, brought from small artisan producers. They include olives, pickled garlic, chorizo, Serrano ham, cheeses, conserves, crackers, pasta, oils and vinegars. There’s also a very good takeaway service with great daily pasta dishes, salads, baguettes and more.
GIFT IDEA: Treat the coffee lover in your family to a packet of speciality coffee - either ground or bean. We like their Antwerp blend.
GIFT IDEA: how about a specially curated hamper, full of Italian delicacies including a panettone? For a serious foodie? Head to St Giles Pantry on Upper St Giles where bossman Alan Sabol bubbles over with glee about his products! With a real accent on local produce, there’s everything from gin to beer, chutney to honey, cheese to porridge! GIFT IDEA: Booja Booja chocolate truffles are hard to resist.

too, especially their cheese one. It’s a great place for a get-together with friends. Anywhere for brunch? JC Pinto specialises in brunch so it’s a great choice for a spot of R&R when you’re out shopping. Think Turkish eggs, spinach and feta borek or everyone’s favourite, if they’re honest, a full English! Situated on St John Maddermarket, it’s a friendly, stylish place.

What about a bit of fine dining? You are spoilt for choice here with Benedict’s, Farmyard and Roger Hickman’s all offering first class menus, featuring local produce prepared with gusto.
What about cake? It always comes down to cake, doesn’t it? Cupcake and Co on Upper St Giles has been going strong since 2011, with Anne Falgate behind the mixing bowls. Her regular line up of brownies, blondies and much more, is always impressive but she moves up a gear at Christmas.

Norwich Lanes has a useful website, www.norwichlanes.co.uk Look out for various pop up Christmas events over the next few weeks.
And a spot of lunch? The Yard on Pottergate doesn’t take bookings which is super useful when you’re not too sure what your timetable is. Expect plenty of classic Italian pasta dishes here, and a few more unusual ones such as gnocchi with sage. The heritage tomatoes with a sharp dressing are recommended as is the tiramisu for dessert. Anything to help you escape Christmas? L’Hexagone French bistro on Lower Goat Lane is a welcome break from turkey and tinsel! Expect classics such croque monsieur, boeuf bourguignon and steak frites - plus some wonderful creme brulees. What about vegetarians and vegans? The Tipsy Vegan on St Benedicts has a very impressive menu which isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of your culinary expectations. How about Szechuan cauliflower, an Argentinian fillet, or a lentil pancake? The cocktails are worth a mention, too. How about a great pub? The Belgian Monk on Pottergate is fun, with more than 45 different beers on offer, plus wines and cocktails. The menu features Flemish classics and northern French dishes, too.
Case history Norwich entrepreneur Tom Ginn runs two outlets in Yalm, the popular foodie centre in Norwich’s Royal Arcade, called Toast Kitchen and Milk Dessert Bar, as well as Bread Hospitality, a recruitment agency. In the summer he opened Dick’s Bar in Bedford Street which offers food and drink all day. He explains: ‘It used to be Frank’s Bar which was a real Norwich institution and I had one of my first dates with my wife there! I heard it was closing and just wanted to try and do something.’ It turned out the building was actually owned by his uncle, called Dick, in a way that could probably only happen in Norfolk, and before too long a deal was struck! Tom says: ‘We don’t want to reinvent the wheel, we have updated the space and just want people to have fun. We have an amazing couple from southern Texas who are in charge in the kitchen and they offer some really great food and we have some great cocktails, too. Norwich Lanes is just a great place to be, there’s a real buzz about it - it is flying!’ 27
Food Blogger Eat Out Norwich recommends somewhere for: A Christmas outing with friends? The Wallow. I’m a sucker for a sharing platter and theirs are top notch. It certainly helps having wine ‘on tap’ too! Somewhere to buy a great foodie Christmas present? Christophe’s Crepes! They have gift cards which are a good option, but also sell amazing crepe cakes too, which make a brilliant present. Who doesn’t love crepes?! Your favourite place and why? I have a real soft spot for Grosvenor Fish Bar. For years it’s been ranked as one of the best places to eat in Norwich and I’ve never had anything but a great experience when visiting. Their festive menu is also fantastic every year. Eat Out Norwich was created in 2019 as a way to champion the top quality food options Norwich offers. Find them on Instagram.

What I’ve been working on… I’ve been testing lots of exciting new bakes for my new 2024 classes including a deliciously wholesome seeded sourdough loaf for my ‘baking for sensitive tummies’ class using local rye and wheat. I’m also adding new bakes into some of my most popular classes including flatbreads, sticky cinnamon buns and seeded sourdough crackers.
This month I’m mainly making…. biscuits! As the autumn chill starts to bite there’s nothing better than coming home, putting the kettle on and hunkering down with a cuppa and something sweet to fill that gap. As I often have some egg white lurking in my fridge, Amaretti biscuits are my go-to (find the recipe in my book). They’re quick and easy to mix, smell heavenly as they’re baking and get chewier the longer they’re left in the tin – that’s if they’re not all eaten straight away!
What I’m reading I love to write (and read) new recipes but you can’t beat a classic, especially when it comes to a craft as old as bread. Elizabeth David’s English Bread and Yeast Cookery, first published in 1978, has pride of place on my bookshelf. 28 |
All the gear This month’s recipe is a moist apple cake that’s best made in a loose bottomed tin. My favourite tins are non- stick springform. Just loosen the clip on the side of the tin to release the metal ring around the cake. A word of caution though - learnt through experience, gently run a knife around the top edge of the cake before you ‘spring’ your cake free as any sticky, caramelised edges may still be attached to the tin and this will spoil the edges of your cake.
Baking know-how: Flour part 2 Last month we looked at the different properties of plain and self-raising flour. This month focuses on bread flour what to look for on the label and how it affects your bakes. Dough requires both elasticity and strength to be able to support the gas bubbles created by yeast. The protein that gives bread flour the ability to create these properties is called gluten (this is what makes bread ‘chewy’ – a quality we don’t want in a sponge cake or muffin) and the more gluten in a flour, the ‘stronger’ it is. Bread flour is labelled ‘strong’ or ‘extra strong’. You can also take a look for at the nutritional analysis label on the side of the bag to make sure the protein level is 11g per 100g or higher.

BAKING CLASSES
METHOD:
INGREDIENTS: SERVES 6 STREUSEL • 90g wholemeal flour (I used Hodemedods Einkorn) • 50g light brown sugar • 1 tsp sweet spice mix* • ¼ tsp baking powder • 60g unsalted butter, melted • 80g hazelnuts, toasted then ground • 1/8th tsp fine sea salt FRUIT LAYER • 4 tasty eating apples (whatever tastes good) CAKE • 2 whole eggs • 90g light brown sugar • 60g wholemeal flour (I used Hodemedods Einkorn) • 3/4 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp sweet spice mix* • 240g hazelnut, toasted then ground • 180g sour cream SWEET SPICE MIX • 2tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp ground ginger • ¼ tsp ground clove (approx. 4 cloves) • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
Make the streusel and apple mix a couple of hours before you start the cake. To make the streusel combine all the ingredients and press the mix together. Wrap in paper and chill in the fridge for a couple of hours before using. Chop the apples into 1cm cubes (leave the skin on) and place in a lidded pan. Gently cook over a low heat until the apples soften slightly (approximately 5 minutes) then leave to cool. When you’re ready to make the cake preheat the oven to 175˚C. Grease and line a 8 inch loose bottom cake tin. Beat the eggs and sugar together in your stand mixer until pale and thick. In a separate bowl combine the toasted gound nuts, flour, baking powder, salt and spice mix. Fold into the egg mix in three additions. Fold in the sour cream until mixed thoroughly. Place the cake mix in the tin and level. Spread the apple mix on top. Crumble the streusel over the surface in irregular chunks then push some of the streusel mix down through the apple into the cake mix so you get lots of streusel texture all the way through. Bake the cake for 30-45 minutes until a knife inserted in the cake layer comes out clean. You may need to cover the cake towards the end of the bake to stop it getting too dark. Dust with icing sugar to serve.
From January 2024 I’m launching The Next Loaf baking school in Wenhaston, Suffolk. If you’ve already attended one of my classes at Two Magpies Bakery you’ll know they’re perfect for raising your baking game or as a gift for a loved one. Classes are small so there’s lots of personal attention and suitable for beginners or bakers looking for more consistency and challenge. We’ll be mixing, shaping and baking our way through an exciting range of classes including Scandinavian baking, Easter baking, sourdough, parent and child baking and Italian baking – to name a few! Classes (and gift vouchers) are now available to book on my website www.thenextloaf.co.uk

GET THE LOOK! With fine dining on the rise, choosing the right dining table is imperative. I love a round dining table, not only does it encourage conversation and togetherness but ones with a single, central leg allow for more legroom and also easier to squeeze an extra seat in at Christmas, or other special occasions. Finish off your dining room with an impressive chandelier above the table, giving your interior that added touch of sophistication. Laura Loves SOPHIE ALLPORT One of my go-to websites for tableware and generally something a little different for the home is sophieallport.com. I love their tableware, and they have some great product themes throughout the year too. Last year, I purchased some lovely Christmas-themed table wear, but you will have to be quick as they do sell out quite quickly! www.sophieallport.co.uk
STATEMENT TABLE LAMPS Invest in some luxury, statement table lamps. These marble, antique brass finish table lamps add glamour, provide warmth and ambiance. Table lamps do not necessarily need to match. This is dependent on the style of the lamp and what look you want to achieve. Another bonus is that due to the lamp’s low wattage, they are more costeffective than ceiling lights. RV Astley Cole Table Lamp from www.norfolkluxuryfurniture.com
ADDING A TOUCH OF COSTEFFECTIVE LUXURY
Wall panelling has been amazingly popular in our homes this year. It’s quick and easy to install, costeffective and transforms the room instantly. There are many styles you can create with it too. Many people choose to add panelling in the bedroom behind the headboard, creating a focal point that can suit a variety of aesthetics and add new textures to a plain surface. Hallways are also very popular as is the living room. You can buy the wall panelling kit at most DIY shops or online. Try searching the hashtags #wallpanelling and #wallpanellingideas to see what other people have been up to on Instagram for some great ideas.

bulbs this month for beautiful flowers in springtime. The garden will have its fair share of brown leaves settling into corners, borders and beds and on the lawn grass. The fallen golden leaves look amazing as a seasonal feature but unfortunately if they are left to lay over winter they will cause the lawn to go patchy and plants to become smothered. We should rake the leaves up and compost them to be used as mulch on the beds and borders in the future. It is time for some lawn grass care in readiness for the depths of wintertime. We should edge our lawns as it will make our borders and beds neat and tidy. The lawn should be aerated at this time of year, to allow air to the roots. We should ideally fork the lawn by hand and create as many holes as we can, this will keep our lawn healthy. The lawn should be cut on the very highest cutting setting at this time of year as longer grass is healthier grass, and should
November
is upon us and with it brings the last month of meteorological autumn. The clocks have recently changed meaning our gardens have less daylight and temperatures continue to reduce. This month we should work to get our gardens winter ready, so let’s put on warm outdoor clothing and get our gardening tools out. The main gardening task for November is to do a good tidy up in readiness for the dormant winter season. The garden has a much slower feel about it now, it’s lacking in colour, damper, cooler and shadier than we have come accustomed to in the warmer months gone by. We can do a little something about the lack of colour, we can add some seasonal floral colour to brighten up our gardens a little. The best plants for some late autumn and winter floral colour are cyclamens, viola, winter pansies and primroses. They are winter hardy and can be planted into pots, containers, tubs, beds and borders. To plan ahead, we can plant out tulip and allium
the cooler air, gently gardening away a good few hours and then enjoying a hot drink and a chocolate biscuit or two as a reward. November feels like a defining line in the gardening calendar, we look back on what we have grown and can plan what we want to plant next year. So while the sun is setting that much earlier in the day, grab a pencil and notepad and get drawing, writing and planning your future garden.

The soil in borders and beds can become compacted after a hot summertime and a turn of the topsoil with a spade or fork can bring a fresh look back into them. You can also put a nice thick layer of mulch over the topsoil to suppress any weeds and very importantly protect plant roots from the cold and freezing weather of wintertime. November can be a cosy month, the time to be outside in

inspiring women Jean Kiekopf
“ I’m
T O N —”
In July
! g n i r i t Re
this year, after 37 years in Education, Jean Kiekopf, a dedicated and internationally celebrated English teacher, taught her last classes in school. A loss to education? Perhaps... but what a gain for the world of local art! Jean says, “I have been so blessed in the people I have worked with and the places I have explored in my professional life... England, Botswana, Borneo and workshops, research and conferences in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Egypt and Oman. I’ve put on Shakespearean plays with students in Botswana that have run for seven nights and had 1,000s of students see their GCSE texts brought to life. I’ve also written English and literature text books for sub Saharan Africa, I’ve taken groups of British teachers to Botswana as part of International Professional Development and have made over 100 Magic Moments video clips of great classroom activities in ESL/ EAL classrooms (thanks to film crew of husband Klaus, and son Luke). I also made peer education videos and resources with colleagues who have become lifelong friends.” In 1997, Jean wrote the Botswana Cambridge exam with UCLES and within the last 10 years, she’s completed her Masters in Professional Development in Language Education with distinction and Cambridge University CELTA – Grade A. Jean summed up this diverse, lengthy career saying, “I have dedicated myself to my students and teams. I have cried when it’s been frustrating and laughed with colleagues to get us through when things have got tough. I, with so many other education professionals, have risen to the challenges of working through the horrors of the AIDS pandemic in Botswana at the turn of the century and recently the Covid lockdowns in England… but loved every minute of it. It has been the best kind of rollercoaster and I am so grateful to all the people I have ridden it with.”

But now, Jean says, it’s time for a change. She vehemently denies any suggestion that she is “retiring” a term she appears to find vaguely insulting, and is bubbling with excitement at her new venture in sculpting and human casting! She regards this mental approach to the change in her life as following her Ikigai! What’s Ikigai? Put simply, Ikigai is the Japanese philosophy for discovering your ‘Reason for Life’. It involves the convergence of Ikigai’s four primary elements: what you love (your passion), what the world needs (your mission), what you are good at (your vocation), and what you can get paid for (your profession).
The Birthday Gift (That just keeps on giving!) This time last year Jean had made 2 sculptures – under the instruction of a craft gift given to her by brother-in-law Steve. Enjoying the process so much Jean decided to embark on making sculptures as her Christmas gifts. She explained that every year she aims to create, not buy, her gifts. This was how her exploration of human figure sculpture began. Having created for Christmas, Jean’s Illustrator sister Fiona (they are the youngest in a family of seven siblings) suggested she exhibit and sell them at the Bell Gallery, Bungay, where Fiona was set to exhibit in May. In true Jean style, she devoted every spare minute to creating three collections, 40 sculptures in all, to exhibit. She was off the starting block and on a steep learning curve. As Jean describes it, “I had no knowledge of pricing my art, promoting it or guessing what the demand might be, I just knew that this is what I’m meant to be doing. Creating the human figures allows me to explore human connections and form. I love bringing a sense of warmth and animation to the pieces I create.”
Competition
‘Leaving Ego at the Door ‘ A celebration of human form in yoga poses. Jean discovered her love of yoga and what it offers both mind and body about 15 years ago. She practices regularly with many of the local yoga teachers who she celebrates in this collection. Leaving Ego at the Door is an essential part of being in the moment for Jean in her yoga practice. This collection has a range of standing, seated and palm size figurines to choose from. Jean takes on commissions for your own selection of yoga poses to adorn your yoga spaces at home or in your studio. They can also be commissioned in larger sizes for outdoor display. ‘Freedom at the Festival’ Since her teenage years in East Anglia attending the Albion fairs and more recently at Latitude and Folk East, Jean has loved people watching In the festival environment. In this collection she has captured tableaux of people and families enjoying the freedom of festival days and the escape from the hectic day to day routines of work and school. ‘No Wings Required’ A visual fight of fancy inspired by Jean’s family members of the next generation who enjoy arial hoops, silks, gymnastics, rock climbing and acrobatics. If you don’t have space for a figurative standing/seated ornament, these lightweight flyers can easily be suspended on fishing line as 3D wall art.

Outdoor sculptures These have been created using a waterproof, weather resistant plaster. They can be displayed outdoors and withstand frost and wind. Holes in their heavy steel bases mean they can also be attached to plinths for stunning garden display. Commissions are go! Not long after sharing her work for family and friends on her private facebook page, Jean began to get requests for commissions: dancers, pole dancers, yoga poses, family groupings, clay pigeon shooters, creation of iconic family photos, pregnancy and new baby sculptures - you name it people wanted it! That included dogs, cats and horses! Jean described this period as, “Overwhelmingly rewarding and humbling - to be allowed to create statement pieces for clients’ loved ones on their special birthdays and anniversaries is an honour and privilege and one I will always feel blessed to be able to do.” She is now ready to take on your commissions for your special occasion. ELEVATE YOUR STYLE
A Personal Styling Experience at John Lewis
in the heart of the ladies’ department, John Lewis offers a unique and personalised styling experience that promises to leave you feeling refreshed and confident in your fashion choices. Recently, Places&Faces very own style icon, Siofra Driver, went along to the Norwich branch and had the pleasure of experiencing this service first hand; and the results were nothing short of extraordinary. Upon entering the styling rooms, Siofra was warmly greeted by Jack and Chloe, the dynamic duo behind this sartorial adventure. “Such a lovely start to the morning being met with such fun people,” remarked Siofra. “I instantly clicked with Chloe and felt comfortable in her company.” Chloe’s attention to detail was evident as she offered a selection of cold beverages, ensuring every guest felt truly pampered. “It was too early for Prosecco, even for me,” Siofra laughed, appreciating the thoughtful touch. As the session commenced, a curated rail of clothing awaited, reflecting Chloe’s uncanny understanding of Siofra’s style. “It felt like Chloe already knew me based on the answers I had provided prior to the appointment,” Siofra praised. The selection ranged from John Lewis’ versatile
Anyday range to the elegance of French Connection and the chic allure of Whistles, catering to all budgets and tastes. Siofra found herself pleasantly surprised by Chloe’s selections. “A number of the pieces I would not have picked myself, but I left re-thinking my entire wardrobe,” she confessed. “I can’t wait to go home and look at it with a fresh set of eyes!” For new mums like Siofra, time is a precious commodity. The experience of having multiple looks pre-curated was a game-changer. “Chloe really took the pain out of the process for me,” Siofra emphasised. “Since becoming a mum, I didn’t want to be dressed like one. Chloe picked me some really classy pieces that were easy to wear, but looked really stylish when put together.” One standout feature was the exceptional lighting in John Lewis’ styling suite, providing an accurate representation of how the outfits would look in various settings. Throughout the session, Siofra felt at ease, noting, “Nothing was too much effort for Chloe. She darted in and out of the room a number of times to get pieces that she thought would work and none of this was ever too much trouble for her.” The excellent service extended to offering refreshments on multiple occasions, a testament to the team’s commitment to making each client’s experience truly special. Leaving the styling suite, Siofra expressed new-found confidence in her style choices. “I will be taking on board some of the pieces from today when I’m next putting together a new look for myself,” she enthused. John Lewis’ Personal Styling service, featuring brands like Hush, Whistles, Baukjen, and more, offers a tailored experience that goes beyond mere shopping. From the private styling suite to expert recommendations, this service empowers individuals to explore and embrace new styles. Tanya Mayfield
Life&Living
Empowering women through boudoir photography,
Tanya Mayfield’s journey of self-love www.tanyamayfieldboudoir.uk
In a world
where body insecurities loom large, Tanya Mayfield, a passionate advocate for self-love and acceptance, believes that we are all guilty of harbouring hang-ups about our bodies. “It’s often about what others will think? It’s not until you’re older you wonder why did I care so much?” she reflects. Tanya, the driving force behind a thriving boudoir photography business, recognized early on that these insecurities can hold women back in various aspects of their lives. “Starting this business, I knew I would help ladies combat insecurities, but not like I have. It’s been beyond amazing,” she says with evident pride. Witnessing the transformation in her clients is something she cherishes. “Seeing someone see a reflection of themselves that they love and seeing their faces light up! It’s priceless.” For Tanya, the power of boudoir photography lies in the ability to see oneself from different angles, exuding glamour and confidence. “Even if you go straight back home and put your joggers back on, you note it. It puts a confident picture of yourself in the forefront of your brain, which is something you cling to - it’s so empowering. It can really help change our mindset.” The impact of seeing oneself in a reflection that one adores extends far beyond the immediate moment. Mayfield asserts, “It has an impact on us going forward - how we feel inside, how we hold ourselves, how we react to things, and how we dress.” Wearing pretty lingerie is the starting point for Tanya, who believes in feeling good from the inside out. “I love lingerie, so for me, it all starts with feeling good in pretty undies under my clothes,” she shares with a warm smile. Tanya’s journey has been a tapestry of heartbreak and liberation. She recounts, “I’ve heard so many insecurities. I’ll be honest; I never imagined some of them. I’ve sat crying with some ladies because they’ve faced eating disorders, sexless marriages, alcoholism, self-harm, and worst of all, cancer where they have lost a breast or both.” Her commitment to sharing these stories is unwavering. “I know I need to share these stories with others more for more ladies to relate and see this experience differently.” With profound empathy, Tanya acknowledges the dichotomy of wanting
to embrace one’s flaws while fearing the initial discomfort. “But it goes against my feeling of, ‘We all already know what we look like, so do we need to see that first?’ I love that saying: ‘Be the girl who fixes a woman’s crown without telling the world it was crooked.’” Throughout her journey, Tanya emphasises the personal nature of the experience. “Photos never have to be shared on my socials. It can stay totally personal and private as lots of my images do.” Tanya’s perspective is shaped by her own experiences, including an artificial limb. “Because of my disability, a right artificial limb, I visited hospitals when I was young a lot and I saw how lucky I actually was from a young age. So I certainly have a positive outlook on life
and embrace the good.” In conclusion, Tanya passionately advocates for self-acceptance. “There are so many people who struggle and fight so much and you really have no clue, then for some of us it can be that mum tum cellulite which we hate and the longing of that body we had in our twenties which we moaned about back then too! Whatever it is, however big or small - it’s ok! I’m here, we work together having fun and I will guide, help bring out and show you the beautiful ways in which your body can be held and seen. Even if you want to hide parts, I’ve got you.” In her journey, Tanya Mayfield brings to light the importance of embracing our bodies, scars and all, and finding strength in vulnerability. Each boudoir photography session she conducts is a testament to her belief that true beauty
lies in self-acceptance. “Our bodies share everything with us, we go through everything with it, yet we treat it back so badly. Our bodies, our scars, are a story, part of who we are. Each session is tailored to you personally. Be you.” With her warm personality and uplifting spirit, Tanya has become a beacon of empowerment, proving that self-love is a journey worth taking. As she aptly puts it, “It’s about taking time out for just you, re-connecting with your true self, baring it all - seeing yourself in ways you wouldn’t have done before, connecting with your inner sensual self - accepting how you are as a whole and embracing the true beauty of us women! But with that being said, ‘It’s you, me, a bit of fun!’ More laid back and fun than you can ever imagine. I talk so much you’ll instantly be distracted!” For those who hesitate, Tanya offers a powerful reminder, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it! You won’t regret it. It is an empowering experience that I believe all women should do, if nothing else, to look back on.” In the lens of Tanya Mayfield, boudoir photography transcends the visual; it becomes a celebration of self, a journey of acceptance, and a powerful statement of self-confidence.

ble Community Care has been in the same family for four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK. Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers. Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information. Recently these questions have been asked of us...
Question: I am disabled and I believe I can make some purchases VAT free. What are they and what do I have to show to prove my status? Answer: The following are VAT free for people with a disability: • medical and surgical appliances • wheelchairs and mobility scooters • equipment to aid the hard of hearing, and low vision aids • specialist beds, chair and stair lifts, rise and recline chairs and other
lifting equipment and sanitary devices • goods that have been designed solely for disabled people • computer equipment • emergency alarm call systems • boats • parts and accessories You can also hire or lease eligible goods VAT-free if you have a disability. Your retailer or other supplier is responsible for checking if the goods are eligible to sell VAT-free. To show that you’re entitled to buy the goods VAT-free, your supplier will probably ask you for a simple written declaration stating your eligibility. If the supplier does not give you a form to fill in you can use the Eligibility Declaration by a Disabled Person for VAT Reliefs, which you can obtain at www.gov.uk. You will need to do a separate declaration for each supplier for them to keep with their VAT records. (Information gov.uk)
Question: I have a Motability Car, can I allow anyone to drive it, for example to go and get my shopping? Answer: The vehicle must be used by, or for your benefit. You do not have to be in the car for every journey or be the driver but only drivers listed on your Certificate of Motor Insurance can drive the vehicle. Question: I am in my eighties and I am finding taking my dog for a walk very hard to do, in fact I miss most days. Is there any organisation that can help? Answer: The Cinnamon Trust, is a charity which was founded in 1985. They offer voluntary dog walking support for owners who can no longer exercise their pets themselves. A person must be over the age of 65 for them to help unless they are suffering from a terminal illness. The age criteria applies to the whole household, not just the pet owner. Feel Good Fit So you’ve
started on your fitness journey and have grown to secretly-sort-of enjoy that post workout ache that you feel in the days following your sessions. Although your sore thighs might make you groan and grumble as you tackle the stairs, it does make you feel like you’ve worked hard and achieved something, a sort of exercise badge of honour if you will! What you’re feeling is known as DOMS, which stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. But what exactly is it? And if you don’t feel it, has your workout still been effective? Let’s take a closer look... DOMS is the muscle pain and stiffness you might feel 24-72 hours after intense exercise, especially if you’re doing a new or particularly strenuous activity, which is why you will often find yourself really sore when you are just starting out on your fitness journey. It usually reaches its peak around 48hrs after the session. DOMS is actually caused by microscopic damage to muscle fibers and the inflammation response that follows. While this sounds pretty scary, it’s not! It isn’t permanent or serious damage, and is in fact the process by which we get stronger. In simple terms, once we put this demand on our muscles, our body realises that it’s going to need to get stronger if we’re going to keep putting it through these workouts! While DOMS can be pretty uncomfortable, it’s a natural and necessary part of the musclebuilding process as your body adapts to new challenges.
So should you experience DOMS after every session? While some people believe that soreness equates to progress, it’s essential to understand that experiencing DOMS after every workout isn’t necessarily a sign of effective training. In fact, there are several reasons why regularly suffering from DOMS may not be in your best interest. Impaired Recovery One of the main purposes of exercise is to stimulate muscle growth and improve overall fitness. But having DOMS too often can impede the body’s ability to recover effectively. When your muscles are constantly in a state of repair, it can be hard to maintain a consistent workout routine. Over time, this can lead to burnout and increased risk of injury, which is unlikely to help you achieve your fitness goals. Decreased Performance Being sore all the time can affect how you perform in your workouts. Stiff and aching muscles are less capable of producing the same level of strength and power as fully recovered muscles. This means that if you’re always chasing the feeling of soreness, you may not be able to push yourself as hard or progress in your training as quickly as you’d like. Potential Overtraining If you’re experiencing DOMS after every workout, you may well be overtraining. Overtraining occurs when you consistently exceed your body’s ability to recover from exercise, leading to fatigue, decreased immune function, and an increased risk of injury. It’s essential to strike a balance between challenging your body and allowing it to recover adequately. Quality Over Quantity Always think quality over quantity! Constantly chasing that post workout ache might lead you to prioritise highintensity, high-volume workouts over ones that are more sustainable and enjoyable. Focusing on consistent, wellrounded exercise routines that you can maintain in the long term is often more beneficial for overall health and fitness.

Chantel Heath INSTAGRAM @ChantelHeathFitness www.chantelfitness.co.uk I'm a 43 year old mother of two and Personal Fitness coach. I work one to one, in person & online with clients aged 18-80. My specialisms include pre and postnatal training, cancer rehab, pilates, and GP exercise referrals. I run fitness classes online and in person in the Suffolk Coastal area. I am also a Mental Health First aider. Mind-Body Connection Experiencing extreme soreness after every workout can definitely have a negative impact on you mentally. It can make it hard to stick to your fitness routine, and the constant discomfort can take the joy out of exercise and make it a chore. Fitness is supposed to be a fun, enjoyable and sustainable part of your life, not a constant battle against soreness. Conclusion It’s totally normal to feel DOMS when you first start your fitness journey, or when you challenge your body in a new way, for example a new exercise, or using heavier weights. But it’s essential to recognise that it shouldn’t be a constant feature, or the primary goal of your training. Constantly seeking DOMS can affect your progress in the long term and have a very negative effect on your health and wellbeing. Instead, aim for a balanced approach to fitness that prioritizes consistency, recovery, and doing exercise you enjoy! On the occasions you do suffer with DOMS, promote recovery by taking adequate rest, staying hydrated and eating well to help the process.
