History of Aldeburgh...
The name ‘Aldeburgh’ derives from old English ald (old) and burgh (fort), though much of this ‘old’ Aldeburgh has long since been lost to the sea. In fact, there is not a great deal of historical record of the town pre-16th century.
However, the Domesday Book (1086) records this part of Suffolk as one of the most highly-populated parts of the country. There is also archaeological evidence indicating the earlier presence of Romans and Saxons.
With the large port of Dunwich, just down the coast, Aldeburgh was a small and relatively insignificant fishing village until the 1500s when it became a prominent port. This is in part due to the storms that ravaged Dunwich, but also thanks to the thriving fishing industry and a growing shipbuilding industry. The flagship of the Virginia Company, the Sea Venture, and Sir Francis Drake’s most famous ship (the Golden Hind) were also built here.
As the river began to silt up and larger ships were no longer able to access the port, Aldeburgh’s importance declined. However, it survived as a fishing village into the 19th century when it became a trendy seaside resort for those looking to escape the more crowded beaches of the south coast. That said, fishing remains part of everyday life here with small boats still heading out from the shore and selling their catch from huts on the beach.
In more recent history, Aldeburgh is notable for being the first English town to elect a female Mayor, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, in 1908 and was, of course, famously the home of composer Benjamin Britten.

At the centre of Aldeburgh, you’ll find a beautiful high street running parallel to the seafront. The wide high street affords plenty of parking so is perfect for those who are just nipping in to pick up an essential item or grabbing something quick for dinner from their favourite takeaway or foodie shop. Shopping locally and supporting local and independent businesses is more important than ever before. We all want to live in a community that is served by a rich mix of independent retailers, suppliers and services, so using these businesses will help ensure our high street continues to thrive. It also helps secure employment opportunities for people in and around the town.
Aldeburgh has plenty to offer, whether you are a resident or visitor to the town. From smart clothing boutiques to fine
jewellers, high-end butchers to specialist delicatessens, gent’s barbers to fabulous beauty salons – you can find it all here!
If you’re fortunate enough to live here, you’ll know where to go for your favourite piece of fish, or that special cut of meat. As a holiday maker, you’ll most likely eat out more often than cook at home, but if you fancy cooking your own breakfast, lunch or dinner then you are spoilt for choice!
Pick up your meat from Salter & King Butchers, fresh bread and pastries from Two Magpies Bakery, freshly caught fish from one of the traditional huts on the seafront, and make sure you get dessert in the form of superb ice-cream from Harris & James. Shopping & Eating in Aldeburgh...
...items you may not find elsewhere, along with a selection of familiar national chains. There are plenty of options when it comes to clothes, shoes and accessories whether you are looking for a fancy new outfit for a meal out at one of the smart restaurants, or something for a casual family day down on the beach. If you’re looking to accessorise your outfit, or just fancy spoiling yourself or a loved one, then a trip to Riley & Riley Jewellers is a must! Pop into Aldeburgh Pharmacy and you will find all your health and beauty essentials and perhaps a new perfume or aftershave.
Of course, all this shopping is hard work, you’ll need somewhere to take the weight off your feet and recharge your batteries. Fear not, Aldeburgh has that covered too. If you like historic pubs with bags of character, The Mill Inn will be up your street. For a taste of modern Indian cuisine, you’ll want to book a table at Sea Spice. Classically British hotels such as The Wentworth and The Brudenell have restaurants looking out to sea and the Brasserie at the White Lion provides comfort food by the coast. If you fancy your food on the beach, why not pick up a portion of fish and chips - it’d be rude to visit the town and not have at least one fish supper on the beach!
Naturally, this is just a snapshot at what the high street and town has to offer. You will find all this and more and can easily lose a day shopping, browsing, eating and exploring so please take your time, support local business and enjoy what you find here in Aldeburgh!

Aldeburgh Carnival...
August 2023 saw the 79th Aldeburgh Carnival, so get August 2024 in your diary nice and early to mark the 80th edition of this special event!
Unlike so many carnivals, Aldeburgh is fortunate in being one of the few towns that has managed to continue a tradition which is at least 170 years old. In 1835, it was known as Ye Old Marine Regatta, becoming Ye Old Marine Regatta and Carnival in 1927 when a carnival procession was added to the programme of events. This was led by Father Neptune and his entourage - Queen Neptune, two Sharks, a Captain and six Sons of the Sea.
On 29 August 1892, 15 events were held - 12 sailing races, two swimming races and a greasy pole competition. One of the big attractions of the day was a race for the East Coast Lifeboats from Aldeburgh (the coxswain of the Aldeburgh boat then was James Cable), Thorpeness and Dunwich. Swimmers competed for the Aldous 20 Guinea Challenge Silver Cup, a race which still continues. That event featured firework, Japanese fireworks in the afternoon and a traditional display in the evening.
In 2017, the carnival celebrated its 75th birthday and in 2018 the event won the Family Tourism Event of the Year in the Norfolk & Suffolk Tourism Awards. In recent years, music has featured at various venues throughout the town on Saturday afternoon. Sunday sports events are always popular and feature the 10k run, children’s races on the sea front greens and the quirky egg boat race. The big events on Monday include launching the lifeboat, a military band leading the carnival procession in the afternoon and the magical lantern parade as the evening light begins to fade before it’s time for the spectacular firework display. Fund raising stalls and activities run across the three days and there are always lots of stalls selling their wares on the Crag Path.
Each year the carnival strives to be bigger, better and more colourful than ever, but still organised by a dedicated team of volunteers and supported by local businesses!
For a brilliant three days out at the seaside, come to Aldeburgh Carnival. Details can always be found via: www.aldeburghcarnival.com

Luckily, this area offers plenty of dog friendly accommodation, outdoor activities and places to eat or rest weary legs and paws. Here are a few pit-stop suggestions where you and your pooch will be welcomed with open arms...
Beaches: Dogs can dip their paws in the sea and run to their heart’s content on most of the beaches in Aldeburgh and the surrounding area, however there are some seasonal restrictions in place on parts of more heavily populated beaches. Check: www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk/environment/ environmental-protection/animals/ dogcontrol/dogs-on-beaches for full details.
Eating out:
The Wentworth Hotel: Boasting stunning sea views, stylish accommodation, delicious food and attentive service, the Wentworth is a wonderful place to relax and unwind with your four-legged friend.
The Mill Inn: This inn oozes old world charm, what’s more, it is very dog-friendly so it’s the perfect venue for a post-walk refreshment!
Thorpeness Meare Shop & Tearoom: With plenty of seating outside and stunning views across the Meare, you and your furry friends will be more than happy watching the world go by.
Wag & Bone: You will find most shops are dog friendly in rural towns, though it is always worth checking before entering. However, few will be more dog-friendly than Wag & Bone…the clue is in the name!
Guidance for dog walkers:
• Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go – particularly if it impacts local wildlife or livestock
• Keep your dog close to you and under your control at all times
• Use a lead when needed or requested
• Prevent your dog from approaching cordoned areas
• Always bag and bin your dog’s waste

The Red House (on Golf Lane, Aldeburgh) is the home Benjamin Britten shared with his partner, the tenor Peter Pears, for the last two decades of his life and where he wrote many of his famous works.
The site also includes Britten’s evocative library, the studio where he composed, an award-winning archive building housing the Britten-Pears Foundation’s extensive collections, and peaceful gardens. It also boasts one of the finest collections of paintings in East Anglia. The house has been carefully represented as it was, based on a room inventory and recollections from people who knew the house at that time.
The result is a charmingly informal snapshot, as though Britten and Pears had just stepped out for a moment. Visit the room where Britten wrote such masterpieces as the War Requiem. His desk, piano and other original items have been put back into the elegant first-floor room created for him our of a former hayloft next to the main house. The library was built on the site of a disused barn to the rear of The Red House in 1963.
Britten Pears
The Red House...
Britten and Pears entertained guests, cultivated vegetables, and even played croquet and tennis in their muchcherished gardens. There were many important social occasions which took place here, such as the celebration of Britten’s life peerage in 1976.
In the summer months, we welcome visitors to bring a picnic or enjoy a spot of croquet on the croquet lawn where Britten and Pears played.
New additions to the visit include a museum shop and The Red Hut Garden Café offering takeaway lunches and afternoon tea.
For opening times and to book a visit, see www.brittenpearsarts.org/visit-us/ the-red-house or call the Box Office on 01728 687110.
In 2020, Snape Maltings and the Britten–Pears Foundation came together to create the new music, arts and heritage charity, Britten Pears Arts. Britten Pears Arts runs both The Red House and Snape Maltings.

Aldeburgh Cinema Trust...
Aldeburgh Cinema Trust is a charity and independent single-screen cinema located in Aldeburgh.
One of Britain's oldest cinemas, this much-loved venue has been at the heart of the local community for over 100 years. From the start, when the cinema was founded by Walter Hill in 1919, the aim has remained the same: to provide a warm welcome and to show the best in contemporary cinema and big-screen entertainment.
Although the building itself dates back more than a century, the cinema has remained up-to-date with its technical and visual presentation to ensure the best possible movie-going experience. Infused with the rich memory of decades of great films, the spacious auditorium is fully-accessible and has preserved many of its original features, including beautiful art deco lights. It also retains 35mm capability.
Playing a key role in the lives of generations of locals (and visitors) the cinema was privately-run for many years. As with many cinemas, times were sometimes tough and there was the threat of closure during the 1960s. To save their local landmark, local people (including composer Benjamin Britten and his partner Peter Pears) banded together to purchase the cinema and run it on behalf of the local community.
Today, Aldeburgh Cinema is a registered charity and programmes a diverse range of films including the very latest (and best) Hollywood blockbusters, World Cinema and silver screen classics.
Augmenting its ambitious programme, the cinema regularly screens seasons and live performances from both the National Theatre and the Royal Opera House. The cinema’s impressive special events have seen the likes of Bill Nighy, Ralph Fiennes, Lenny Henry, Anthony Horowitz, Richard Curtis and Emma Freud take to the stage.
Since 1994, the cinema has been home to the prestigious Aldeburgh Documentary Festival, which every November welcomes over 2,000 visitors over three days for a programme of inspiring films and lively discussions. Created by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Molly Dineen, the festival’s previous artistic directors have included writer Craig Brown, actress Diana Quick, and film and television producer Jill Green.
Aldeburgh Cinema also has an active education programme, working with children and young people, giving them the opportunity to experience and get involved in film, with a focus on documentaries. We work with the local primary and secondary schools, so that local children have a chance to make films, as well as study and discuss them through outreach work.
For more about the cinema, visit: www.aldeburghcinema.co.uk where you can sign up to weekly newsletter for the latest screening updates.

Sport in Aldeburgh...
With the North Sea in one direction and the River Alde in the other, it’s inevitable that sailing and water-based activities play a prominent role in the leisure activities in the town.
Slaughden Sailing Club was established more than 40 years ago and in 2003, the club eventually built a new clubhouse, part-funded by the National Lottery and helped by club members who gave their professional expertise for free. It’s now a friendly, unpretentious sailing club offering competitive racing, training, instruction, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing and a good social scene.
Next door, is Aldeburgh Yacht Club. Founded in 1897, the Club now has around 1,600 members and a large modern, purpose-built clubhouse.
There’s active racing at weekends from April to December with both keelboat and dinghy classes and a more frequent programme (particularly amongst the youth and junior classes) during August.
The Club has an active social programme and new members are welcomed. Juniors are particularly encouraged with tuition available for both learning to sail and learning to race.
Away from the water, Aldeburgh has plenty to offer golfers of all abilities. Aldeburgh Golf Club (founded in 1884) has two courses... The 18-hole championship course (which is a challenge for even the best golfer) and the River Course (a pretty nine-hole course more suited to beginners and
high-handicap golfers). Both courses enjoy stunning views of the River Alde and the North Sea and being situated on free-draining sandy soil, play is possible on this picturesque course all year round.
Is tennis more to your taste? Try Aldeburgh Tennis Club, just off Park Road. Four championship-standard hard courts, two of which are floodlit making play possible all year. New members are always welcome but visitors can use the courts on a pay-as-you-play basis.
Next door is Aldeburgh Bowls Club, a thriving friendly club where all comers are welcomed regardless of age or skill level. Once again, you can either become a member or pay when you play.
From the Bowls Club, turn right along Jubilee Walk and your reach King’s Field, the largest recreation space in Aldeburgh. Close to the town’s Community Centre, the area has an outdoor gym, play equipment for juniors and a toddlers playground. Aldeburgh Rugby Club play their home games here and the field is well-used by locals and visitors.

Aldeburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station...
There was a lifeboat station at Sizewell from 1826 which was manned from Aldeburgh. The station moved to Aldeburgh in 1851 and the current lifeboat station was built in 1994. Aldeburgh station has been awarded 10 silver and five bronze medals, the last of which was awarded in 2000.
During WWII, two of the lifeboats (the Abdy Beauclerk and Lucy Laver) were part of a group of 19 lifeboats that took part in the rescue at Dunkirk.
There are two lifeboats: Freddie Cooper, a Mersey class all weather lifeboat and Susan Scott, an inshore D-class inflatable lifeboat.
The 12-metre Mersey class boats were introduced in 1988 as a lightweight boat capable of being launched from a beach. They have a top speed of 17 knots and the 1,110 litre fuel tanks powering two 280hp Caterpillar engines give them a range of 140 miles.
The D class inflatable lifeboat were first introduced in 1963, with the current design introduced in 2003. This 5m vessel
powered by a 50hp Mariner outboard is capable of a top speed of 25 knots and carries enough fuel to operate at top speed for three hours.
There are 36 operational crew, who between them have donated over 475 years of their time to Aldeburgh RNLI. In many cases, the crew have ancestors who have volunteered at this lifeboat station for many generations.
The RNLI (who provide the training, guidance and equipment to perform lifesaving duties) will be 200 years old in 2024. The institution operates around the clock from 238 lifeboat stations. In 2022, there were 9,312 launches of lifeboats in the UK and Ireland. 16,476 people were aided and 389 lives were saved. Of those 9,312 launches, 15 took place from Aldeburgh Station in 2022 with three lives saved.
RNLI have announced that Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station will soon be given an Atlantic 85 which is an 8.5 metre RIB.
