HOME TRENDS FOR 2025

For 2025, DIY, decor, and homeware trends reflect a mix of sustainability, comfort, and a focus on personalised design. Here's a breakdown of the top trends:

1. Sustainable Materials & Eco-Friendly Choices

Fr sustainable mat ials to the ret n of b d c rs and vintage styles

systems and energy-efficient gadgets to create seamless, tech-savvy living spaces.

6. Maximalism & Personal Expression

• Reclaimed wood, recycled metal, and sustainable textiles are becoming key features in DIY projects and home decor.

• Upcycling and repurposing furniture will continue to rise as more people seek to reduce waste and create unique pieces.

• Moving away from minimalism, 2025 will see the rise of maximalist decor, where bold colours, patterns, textures and personal collections are displayed proudly.

• Homeware brands are increasingly focusing on carbon-neutral production and sustainable packaging.

7. Multi-functional Spaces

• Gallery walls, statement furniture, and layered textiles will allow homeowners to express their unique style.

2. Natural & Earthy Tones

• Muted, earthy palettes with soft greens, warm browns, and stone greys will dominate interiors, creating a calm, grounding atmosphere.

3. Biophilic Design

• With more people working from home, there’s a demand for multi-functional furniture and spacesaving solutions including fold-away desks, extendible tables, and modular furniture that can easily be re-arranged.

• Botanical influences remain strong, with houseplants and nature-inspired prints becoming even more prominent.

8. Vintage & Retro Revival

• Mid-century modern furniture and vintage pieces continue to inspire decor, but 2025 will also see the resurgence of 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s styles, with bold patterns and playful colours.

• Integrating nature into home interiors through plants, natural light, and materials is a growing trend.

4. Comfort & Cosiness

• Second-hand shopping for vintage homeware and furniture remains popular as a sustainable, costeffective and stylish choice.

• Living walls, indoor gardens, and natural elements like wood, stone, and bamboo are popular choices.

• After the pandemic, people are prioritising comfort and wellbeing in their homes. Expect a focus on soft furnishings, plush textures, and layered fabrics like wool, velvet, and linens.

9. Textures

5.

• Mixing different textures will be big in 2025, whether it’s in textiles (like combining velvet, boucle, and leather) or through textured wall treatments like limewash, exposed brick, or wood panelling.

10. Wellness-Centric Bathrooms

Smart Home Integration

• Hygge and Lagom (Scandinavian-inspired comfort trends) continue to influence UK homes.

• The rise of smart tech in homes is set to continue, with more homeowners investing in smart lighting, thermostats, and home security systems.

• DIY enthusiasts are incorporating voice-controlled

• Bathrooms will become more spa-like, with organic materials and natural textures.

• DIYers may focus on creating wellness corners with mood lighting, essential oil diffusers, and natural stone elements.

These trends reflect a shift towards more sustainable, personal, and comfortable home environments. DIYers and homeware enthusiasts will have plenty of room for creativity as they adapt these styles to their personal tastes.

e tensi s MAXIMISING SPACE & VALUE

A guide to h

Extending your home is one of the best ways to improve both its functionality and value. Whether you're thinking of adding an extra bedroom, creating a larger kitchen, or converting your loft, an extension can transform the way you live. But where do you start?

Planning

Before you break ground, it’s important to consider the purpose of your extension. Are you looking to add living space for a growing family, or is it more about increasing market value? Having clear goals will guide your design decisions and budget allocation.

Start by researching local planning regulations. Depending on where you live, certain extensions might fall under permitted development rights, meaning you won't need full planning permission. However, larger projects (or those in protected areas) may require approval, so it’s always worth consulting with a planning expert or your local authority.

Choosing the Right Type of Extension

Here are a few popular types of extensions, each offering different benefits:

• Rear: Extending out into your garden is perfect for enlarging a kitchen or creating an open-plan living area. Rear extensions are one of the most popular options as they add significant square footage while maintaining the flow of your home.

• Side Return: If your home has a narrow alley running along the side, a side return extension can reclaim this underused space. It’s a common choice for terraced and semi-detached properties, particularly in urban areas.

• Wrap-around: This combines both a rear and side extension, often used to create a large, L-shaped open-plan space. It’s ideal for homeowners who want to maximise ground-floor space, but it typically requires more planning and a larger budget.

• Two-Storey: For those needing both extra living and sleeping space, a two-storey extension is a smart option. It’s cost-effective in terms of price per square metre and can dramatically increase the value of your home.

Considerations for Design & Style

Your extension should blend seamlessly with the rest of your home. It’s not just about creating more space; it’s about enhancing your living environment. Choose materials that match or complement the existing building - whether that’s traditional brick, wood cladding, or contemporary glass.

Modern homes often favour open-plan layouts, with natural light being a key design element. Consider adding bi-fold doors, skylights, or glass panels in the roof to create a bright and airy space. On the other hand, older homes might benefit from a more traditional approach, maintaining features like period mouldings or timber beams.

Budget & Building Work

Costs for extensions can vary widely depending on the size, complexity, and materials used. On average, you can expect to spend between £1,800 to £3,000 per square metre in the UK (according to Checkatrade.com). It’s essential to set a clear budget from the outset and allow for contingencies, as building projects rarely go exactly to plan!

Hiring the right builders is crucial. Check references, ask to see previous work, and ensure they’re fully insured and accredited. Communication is key during the construction process, so make sure there’s a clear line of contact between you and your contractor.

Final Thoughts

An extension is an investment in both your home and your lifestyle. By carefully planning and considering your options, you can create a space that not only meets your needs today but adds value for the future. Whether you’re extending to accommodate a growing family or simply enhancing your living space, the right extension can transform your home.

UTILISING SPACE IN A SMALL KITCHEN

M imising ev y inch of usable space

In a small kitchen, where space is limited, making the most of every available inch can transform the room into an efficient and stylish space. Whether you're working with a compact layout or simply want to optimise the storage and functionality of your kitchen, here are some practical ways to maximise your kitchen's potential.

Make the Most of Vertical Space

When floor space is tight, the walls become your best friend. Install shelving, hooks, and rails to store everything from pots and pans to utensils and spices. Floating shelves can hold items like cookbooks, dishes, or decorative storage jars, while magnetic strips can keep knives and metal utensils within easy reach. Tall cabinets that extend to the ceiling can also offer extra storage for items you use less frequently.

Install Pull-Out Storage

Deep cupboards can often be underutilised, as things placed at the back tend to be forgotten. Pullout shelves, racks, and baskets provide easy access to every inch of your cabinets. You can use them to store items like spices, canned goods, or cleaning supplies, making the most of those tricky corners.

Opt for Slimline Appliances

In small kitchens, large appliances can dominate the space. Look for slimline versions of dishwashers, ovens, and refrigerators that offer the same functionality without taking up as much room. A builtin or integrated approach also helps create a sleek, uncluttered look.

Use Multi-Functional Furniture

If you have room for a kitchen table or island, consider multi-functional furniture. Drop-leaf tables that can be folded down when not in use, or a mobile kitchen island on casters that offers extra worktop space and storage underneath, can be great solutions. Some islands even come with built-in seating to double as a dining area.

Add Hooks & Rails

Walls and the sides of cabinets can provide perfect spots to add hooks and rails for hanging utensils, mugs, and even pans. A pegboard offers flexibility, as you can rearrange your hanging items depending on your current needs.

Use Drawer Dividers & Organisers

Drawers can quickly become cluttered without proper organisation. Drawer dividers and organisers are essential for keeping everything in place, from cutlery to kitchen gadgets. Tiered inserts allow for better visibility of smaller items like spices or utensils, making them easier to find.

Consider Folding/Stackable Options

In small kitchens, bulky items like chairs or extra countertops can take up valuable space. Look for foldable chairs or stackable stools that can be easily stored when not in use. Similarly, a fold-out countertop can offer additional prep space, and be folded back against the wall when not needed.

Opt for Clever Corner Solutions

Corners are often wasted space in small kitchens. However, with clever corner storage options like carousels or pull-out shelves, you can make these areas more accessible and functional. They’re perfect for storing pots, pans, and small kitchen appliances.

Declutter & Simplify

The more items you try to cram into a small kitchen, the more cramped it will feel. Regularly assess what you use frequently and what can be stored elsewhere or donated to a charity shop. Simplifying your kitchen tools and equipment can create a more open and breathable space.

Make the Most of Lighting

Good lighting can make even the smallest kitchen feel more spacious. Under-cabinet lighting can brighten work surfaces and create the illusion of more space, while reflective surfaces like glossy cabinets or metallic backsplashes can help bounce light around the room making it appear more spacious.

Conclusion

A small kitchen doesn't have to feel cramped or inefficient! By using clever storage solutions, smart appliances, and multi-functional furniture, you can make the most of your available space while maintaining a stylish, practical kitchen. Whether you're planning a kitchen renovation or simply looking for small tweaks, these ideas will help you utilise every inch of your space.

TRANSFORMING YOUR BATHROOM INTO A SPA-LIKE SANCTUARY

Simple up ades f ev yday l y

In today’s fast-paced world, having a spa-like bathroom at home offers a daily retreat for relaxation and self-care. Whether you’re redesigning or just looking to refresh your current space, a few simple updates can make your bathroom feel luxurious, soothing, and indulgent. Here's how you can create a serene, spa-inspired atmosphere.

Choose a Calm Colour Palette

The right colour scheme sets the tone for a tranquil space. Soft, neutral hues (think basic whites, creams, pale blues, and earthy tones) evoke a sense of calm and spaciousness. Avoid bold or overly bright colours, as they can feel jarring and overstimulating. Stick to muted tones that mimic the natural elements found in spas.

Plants

Greenery not only purifies the air but also adds life and a calming aesthetic to your bathroom. Choose plants that thrive in humidity, like ferns, orchids, or peace lilies. Even a small potted plant on the countertop can refresh the space and enhance that spa-like feel.

Incorporate Natural Materials

Using natural materials like stone, wood, and bamboo instantly brings a sense of nature indoors. Wooden accents, stone countertops, or even a bamboo bath mat can create an organic, earthy feel. These textures add warmth and depth, ensuring that your bathroom feels both sophisticated and comforting.

Upgraded Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a spa-like atmosphere. Opt for soft, ambient lighting instead of harsh overhead lights. Dimmable lights allow you to adjust the brightness depending on your mood, perfect for creating a relaxing experience. Don’t forget candles! Flickering candlelight adds instant serenity.

Add a Rainfall Showerhead or a Freestanding Tub

The ultimate way to upgrade your bathroom is with a luxurious shower or tub. Rainfall showerheads mimic the gentle downpour of rain, enhancing the shower experience. For those who love to soak, a freestanding tub is a beautiful and inviting focal point that instantly gives the bathroom a spa-like feel.

Create a Zen Shower Space

If a new tub or showerhead isn’t in the budget, focus on making your existing shower a sanctuary. Add a teak bench for seating or storage, and consider hanging a eucalyptus bundle from your showerhead. The steam releases the plant’s oils, which are known for their calming and rejuvenating properties.

Declutter & Organise

Invest in Luxurious Towels, Robes & Bathmats

Fluffy towels, plush bathrobes and super-soft bathmats are an easy way to add a sense of soft indulgence to your bathroom. Look for high-quality, thick cotton towels and store them rolled or folded neatly in a basket or on open shelving to recreate the look of a luxury spa. Plus, these don’t have to cost a fortune! Many supermarkets sell very affordable, high-quality spa-like towels, robes and bathmats.

Clutter disrupts the peaceful ambiance of a spalike bathroom. Clear countertops and keep only the essentials on display. Use stylish storage solutions such as woven baskets, glass jars, or wooden trays to keep toiletries organised and keep everything away behind cupboards and cabinets if possible. Keeping the space clean and clear is key to maintaining a serene environment.

Introduce Minimalist Décor

Simplicity is key to creating a spa-like environment. Stick to minimalist, functional décor that doesn’t overwhelm the senses. A few well-chosen pieces, such as a sleek soap dispenser or a polished mirror, will go a long way in elevating the space without making it feel cluttered.

Aromatherapy & Soundscapes

The power of scent should not be underestimated. Use essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or chamomile in a diffuser to fill the space with calming fragrances. Scented candles, bath bombs, and bath salts can also enhance your sense of well-being. For an added layer of relaxation, consider installing a Bluetooth speaker to play gentle spa music or nature sounds while you bathe.

Conclusion

With a few thoughtful touches, transforming your bathroom into a personal spa retreat is within reach. From the right colour palette and natural materials to soothing scents and soft lighting, these simple updates will help you create a serene oasis where you can unwind and recharge every day.

THE 4 GARDENING SEASONS

With T S lg - @g den_with_t

The four gardening seasons with Tom Strowlger... Otherwise known as @garden_with_tom on Instagram and TikTok!

Spring

Spring-time brings the garden back to life, with welcomed green shoots and floral colour and longer, brighter and warmer days. The Crocus, Daffodil, Tulip and Allium will cheer us up no end. We can now regularly cut our lawn grass, preferably starting on the highest cut for the first few cuts to ensure the grass stays healthy for the peak seasons. The temperatures are increasing so remember to water your plants when in a dry spell. We can start planting out Lilies, Freesia, Dahlia, Begonia, Gladioli, Cosmos and Wildflowers ready for the Summer months to come.

Summer

Summer-time arrives and by July gardens reach their peak of the growing season. Lots of plants have established themselves in preparation for the most colourful season of all. We should ideally cut our lawns twice a week and ideally no shorter than the middle cutting setting on the lawnmower. If you want even more flowers in your garden then you can hand sow annual wildflower seed and plant in any nursery grown bedding plants like Geranium, Pansies, Cosmos, Lobelia, Petunia, Rudbeckia, Californian Poppy and Busy Lizzie. We should deadhead flowering plants so to encourage new buds and flowers. We water at the base of our plants during dry spells either first thing in the morning or mid evening. Continued overleaf...

Continued from page 27...

Autumn

Autumn-time brings a golden change to the garden, the plants start to retreat towards the cooler and shorter days. We can add seasonal floral colour to brighten up our gardens a little. The plants for Autumn and Winter floral colour are Cyclamen, Viola, Winter Pansy and Primroses. They can be planted into pots, tubs, containers, planters, beds and borders. This season is the best time to plant Snowdrop, Crocus, Hyacinth, Daffodil, Tulip and Allium bulbs in garden pots, tubs, beds and borders. We can plant spring bulbs in formal rows or randomly into borders and beds. That’s the joy of spring bulb planting as we pick what we want to grow and display. We can give our lawn grass a last trim, I cut my lawn grass no less that 5cm until the clocks change.

Winter

Winter-time is when gardens fall dormant for several months. The Snowdrop and Hellebore is perfect of this time of year. We can get amongst the beds and borders and turn the moist soil with a spade, giving it a refreshed look. The bushes, hedges and shrubs can be pruned whilst they are dormant. The fallen leaves will accumulate on the lawn, so to ensure they don’t suffocate and damage the grass we should rake leaves off the lawn and sweep them off paths and heap them up onto a compost. If we spot any weeds lift them and their roots before they become established. Please do follow me on Instagram & TikTok @garden_with_tom for more seasonal gardening advice and tips.
