New insurance policy for farm contractors
A
new insurance policy for farm contractors has been launched by the National Association of Agricultural Contractors in partnership with Towergate Farm Insurance. The new policy gives farm contractors access to policy extensions such as loss of yield, subsidy payment due to an unintended breach of a customer’s scheme and environmental impairment liability cover. NAAC chief executive Jill Hewitt said: “We are delighted to be working with Towergate to offer members an exclusive policy, and a dedicated point of contact when getting insurance quotes.

‘Standout sale’ sees top prices for machinery fleet
T
op prices were achieved when East Anglian-based auctioneer Cheffins hosted a major machinery dispersal sale on behalf of agricultural contractors RC Baker Ltd. The well-attended auction on 16 December saw more than 150 lots go under the hammer – including a fleet of John Deere tractors, two large tankers and various other machinery items and implements. Highlights of the sale included seven John Deeres – all of them less than four years old. They included five 6215R machines which went for £117,500 (2021); £95,500 (2020); £95,000 (2020); £70,500 (2018); and £54,500 (2017).
has come to spend more time with the family. “Growing and developing the business for nearly half a century has been an amazing journey. Over those years we have had some truly fantastic staff, suppliers and customers, many of whom we are lucky to now call good friends.”
A range of spreading equipment included a 2020 Claas Xerion 5000 slurry tanker and Gooseneck Kaweco combination which went for £525,000. A 2017 Vredo 7028/3 self-propelled spreader made £425,000. In addition, a 2021 John Deere 9700i forager made £270,000; a 2013 Claas Lexion 780 combine harvester made £126,000; and a 2015 Volvo L70 loader made £81,000. Machines were offered alongside a range of drills, cultivators and trailers.
Record prices A well-known figure in the farming world, Mr Baker is a past chairman of the National Asso-
ciation of Agricultural Contractors. He has spoken at the Oxford Farming Conference and is a previous Farmers Weekly Contractor of the Year. Cheffins director Oliver Godfrey said: “This was a standout sale. The £525,000 paid for the Claas Xerion tanker is a record price achieved for a piece of modern agricultural machinery ever sold at auction.” Bidders came from across the UK and overseas – online and in person. “This was well-maintained equipment, and the Baker team have a fantastic reputation in the market, which directly translated into some very strong bidding across the board.”
Family time RC Baker managing director Charles Baker built up a substantial contracting business after starting out with a Ford 4000 tractor in 1974. He said: “The time

Intended to be another option for potential customers already operating a rollerbedtype machine in suitable soil types, its addition makes Vervaet the only harvester manufacturer to offer their customers the option of both primary cleaning methods. Additionally, the Vervaet system discharges onto a central cleaning turbine rather than a trace, eliminating a potential problem area. The central turbine is a well-proven method already in use on over 160 Vervaet harvesters which are currently operating in the UK. The compact and manoeuvrable four-wheel Q-616 remains the most popular harvester in the Vervaet range. The model continues to be enhanced with annual updates and a 2021 machine will also be in action. The postcode for the event is NR9 5NY.

The first intake of apprentices from Claas dealerships will start at the Saxham academy next month – 20 years after Claas first launched its apprenticeship programme. Claas said the move would ensure staff had even better technical skills and product knowledge. The new purpose built Apprentice Academy makes Claas the only UK agricultural machinery manufacturer to offer and deliver an in-house apprenticeship programme that is all under one roof.

LAMMA 2022
Range of services showcased by Hutchinsons Agronomy firm Hutchinsons hopes to showcase its variable rate drill conversion kit at LAMMA later this year. The Omnia E-Seed is said to be the first stand-alone variable rate drill conversion kit that fits any standard drill. It enables a standard land metered drill to be converted simply and efficiently into a variable rate drill. Hutchinsons has invested heavily in developing services and technologies to allow growers to become more profitable and sustainable amid a tide of rising input costs. It says the Omnia E-Seed has been thoroughly tested at a farmscale level on the company’s demonstration Helix Farms. Also at LAMMA, the company will showcase its TerraMap Carbon carbon mapping service. Different rotation scenarios – from cropping and variety types to stewardship – can be created within the Omnia Carbon management tool to see how changes in management practices can improve environmental and financial performance. Future services within Omnia will let users calculate the production coosts of different cropping scenarios – enabling them to make better informed decisions when it comes to managing carbon and profit before putting a crop into the ground.
The 40th anniversary LAMMA event will now go ahead on 4-5 May.
LAMMA event postponed amid pandemic concern
T
his year’s LAMMA show has been postponed following concerns over another wave of coronavirus. Due to take place this month at the Birmingham NEC, the event has now been rescheduled for 4-5 May. All plans for the 40th anniversary show will be carried over to the spring edition, when organisers say the two-day show will welcome more than 600 exhibitors and 40,000 attendees who will gather to see the latest machinery, technology and equipment for the farming industry. Sanjeev Khaira, director of organisers Agriconnect, said: “We have seen a significant increase in the uncertainty of COVID-19 regulations. We have built robust health and safety plans for the LAMMA 2022 event. “However, with distribution and supply chain challenges and the potential lockdowns or restrictions, we are all uncertain about how the situation will look in January. “After speaking with many of our exhibitors and attendees, we have taken the challenging decision to postpone.”
Event director Kate Walsh said there would be no changes to the LAMMA 2022 floorplan or show features as a result of the date change. Visitor registration will remain open and there was no need for anyone to register again if they had already done so, she added. “The team and I are saddened to be making this announcement today. We have been hard at work planning for the 40th anniversary edition of LAMMA, and were very much looking forward to bringing the agricultural industry together. “The past few years have been challenging for the farming community, and we had hoped LAMMA in January would be a great way to start the New Year and spur momentum in the industry. “However, after listening to you, and sharing your concerns about the COVID situation, we believe moving the show to the spring will provide the best opportunity for us to meet face-to-face and deliver on the objectives of both our exhibitors and visitors.” For full details, visit www.lammashow.com
New and updated models from Fendt
The Omnia E-Seed converts a standard drill into a variable rate machine 8 Anglia Machinery Janauary 2022
Fendt says it still plans to exhibit new and updated models across all its product ranges at this year’s LAMMA event. It will include the FendtONE system – a new operator platform which encompasses onboard and offboard task management to help machine operators optimise productivity and working efficiency in the field. The platform links the operator and their machine with the farm office or any location with an internet connection and a smart device. This makes it easier to plan jobs, monitor work and keep accurate records.
The FendtONE display appearance and layout is similar whether viewed in the tractor cab or the farm office. Fendt says this makes operator training easier and avoids confusion and errors. Since its launch two years ago, the FendtONE control concept has been rolled out across machines as each series is updated. New 500 and 900 Vario models are the latest to gain FendtONE cabs and will be shown at LAMMA for the first time. For 2022, all models share a 10-inch digital dashboard display, and the new FendtONE
armrest and multi-function control joystick. Higher spec levels have GPS guidance and additional functions available through a 12-inch terminal. Although the FendtONE onboard control concept is new, Fendt says experienced users will immediately feel at home with the new cab layout and controls which retain a familiar appearance and feel. Fendt specialists will be onhand at LAMMA to explain how bringing together the onboard and offboard worlds work and provide benefits for any size farm or contracting business.

First Bobcat R-Series telehandlers arrive in UK • Versatile machines are well received • Used in construction and agriculture • Robust, capable and comfortable too
T
he first of Bobcat’s new R-Series telehandlers have been delivered in to Truelove Property & Construction in Lincoln. The T41.140SLP machines offer a lift capacity of 4.1t, a lift height of 13.65 m and forward reach of 9.8 m. Established in 1968, Truelove Property & Construction is a family-run business. Over the past 50 years, it has built almost 1000 new homes. It also has a subsidiary farming business called Happy Days Farming Company.
The new T41.140SLP telehandlers were supplied by local dealer AMS Bobcat in Scunthorpe. They are already at work on a number of housing developments – but suitable for farm work too.”
Top notch Truelove owner and director Barrie Truelove said “We were not satisfied with the performance of our previous brand of telehandlers. We chose to replace them with the Bobcat telehandlers for a number of reasons.”
Price, lead time and quality were all top notch, said Mr Truelove. He added: “It has been a very successful transition – and all of our operators are very happy with the new telehandlers. One of the T41.140SLP units is also being used on Worlaby Farm near Brigg, where it is being employed to lift and handle steel components being used to build a new 10,000t grain store at the farm.
First farm Truelove bought its first farm in January 1994 in Nottinghamshire and then went on to buy Worlaby Farm and another in Kingerby at Market Rasen. The company has since continued to grow with the acquisition of three further farms. Typically, the Bobcat T41.140SLP telehandler is used in construction applications, but this model can also find other uses in agriculture. The telehandlers are being used used for applications such as loading and stacking hay bales. Happy Days Farming mainly concentrates on arable farming with over 2000ha under management, but the company has also
moved recently into pig production. The company is continually looking to expand and seeking new opportunities in agriculture.
Choice of models The new T41.140SLP telehandlers are the first of the new RSeries models to be sold in the UK. As well as the T40.140SLP, the new generation R-Series telehandler range provides a choice of 11 more models with Stage V engines. The new R-Series telehandlers cover lifting heights from 6 to 18 m with maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.1 tonne. The new R-Series range of telehandlers from Bobcat comprises a range of model sizes. The new R-Series telehandlers offer agility on demand, with a newly configured transmission system providing enhanced smoothness to carry out the trickiest jobs at height with surgical precision. These operations are also facilitated by the combination of the Boom Positioning System, the new updated, ultra-accurate joystick, the inching function and the improved visibility from the cab.
Major milestone for award-winning engine The 750,000th engine has just come off the line at JCB Power Systems in Derbyshire where production first began in 2004. JCB chairman Lord Bamford said it was “quite some milestone” considering that the company only started manufacturing 17 years 10 Anglia Machinery Janauary 2022
ago. The engines were a global success story, he added. “So much has been achieved over that time with our engines including two world land speed records. With the development of our new hydrogen motor, there is so much more to come and the fu-
ture for our engine business looks very bright.” Engine production was extended to India in 2011 – helping to power JCB to the landmark figure. JCB India’s Delhi plant currently manufactures around 48 engine variants for the Indian
market and for export. More than half of the 750,000 engines – which range in power from 55-212kW – were made in Derbyshire. The engines power JCB products and those of customers producing equipment as diverse as road sweepers.

ercedes-Benz Trucks has responded to customer feedback by introducing more powerful versions of its 4x4 Unimog UGE implement carrier. Now available for order by UK operators, the U435 and U535 produce 260 kW (354 hp). This represents an increase of 40 kW (54 hp) on the highest output previously available from the Euro VI Step E 7.7-litre in-line six-cylinder engine. Maximum torque is up by 180Nm to 1,380Nm, which is available from 1,800rpm. Michelin tyres help Larrington Trailers seal the deal
F
eltwell Growers has ordered four new Larrington Trailers specified with Michelin TrailXBib VF tyres and an AgriBrink central tyre inflation system (CTIS). Part of the G’s Group – one of the largest family-owned fresh produce suppliers in the UK – the farm had planned to move its entire fleet of trailers onto tracks, as it looked for the best ways to reduce soil damage at its 5,000ha base in the Norfolk fens. Supplied and fitted by Michelin ExelAgri dealer Bush Tyres, the TrailXBib fitments benefit from Michelin’s Ultraflex Technology that allows for greater flexibility – meaning they can work with a larger footprint, reducing the impact on the soil. Feltwell Growers radish manager Scott Watson said: “We are ef-
fectively farming below sea level here and the ground gets very wet, so it’s hard for these big heavy trailers to navigate. When fully loaded with vegetables they can weigh up to 19 tonnes. “We assumed the only thing that would really alleviate soil
damage would be to move them onto tracks,” said Mr Watson. “We agreed to look at the set-up with the CTIS and low-pressure tyres and were blown away with the results.” The test saw two 180hp tractors pulling 10t of stone payload in two identical Larrington tandem axle trailers across a wet field. One trailer was fitted with standard tyres pressured to 4 bars, while the other was fitted with Michelin TrailXBibs at 1 bar. The trailer with the standard tyres got stuck and had to be pulled out by two more tractors,
while the trailer fitted with the Michelin TrailXBib VF fitments sailed through with minimum damage to the field. “We pretty much made up our minds there and then,” said MrWatson. “We now have two of the trailers with that exact set-up up running in the fields with two more to follow shortly – it’s working very well. “The CTIS allows us to go from 7 bar for operating on firmer ground down to 1 bar for when we’re out on the soggy fields inside a minute and a half. It’s a great, sustainable solution for us.”
The tyres are helping to reduce soil compaction

Innovative drill helps switch to regenerative agriculture

ifferent ways of farming more sustainably and profitably were discussed during a recent webinar hosted by the agri-tech innovation centre CHAP. More than 100 farmers, agronomists, researchers and industry professionals attended the online event – and explored how innovations such as the Swedish System Cameleon drill can be used to support the principles of regenerative agriculture.
Opening the webinar was Jane Rickson of Cranfield University. She outlined five principles of regenerative agriculture: minimising soil disturbance, maximising crop diversity, keeping soil covered, maintaining living roots and integrating livestock. The second speaker was Newcastle University farms director James Standen. He discussed ways to improve soil health status, the importance of timely operations, business resilience and the

need to focus team thinking. “We’ve had to bring the whole team with us to think in the same way,” said Mr Standen. “Moving forward, timeliness is key. We’re trying to maintain green cover as we move from one season to the next, while also improving the balance of inputs.” Leigh Nobes, farm manager at the MacGregor Farming Partnership in Norfolk, spoke about the farm’s experience of the System Cameleon drill, a piece of equipment which is fast gaining pace among converts to regenerative agriculture. The drill’s inter-row technique means it can work between crop rows after emergence. This provides an opportunity to reduce machinery costs, improve precision and to support reduced or alternative inputs. Mr Nobes told listeners: “We bought the Cameleon in 2018 as we felt we needed additional weed control for our organic system. Because you can inter-row hoe, it opens up a much greater window.” The Cameleon worked best when it was combined with RTK GPS precision technology, said Mr Nobes. It was a worthwhile investment and was helping the farm save time and effort while managing crops.
