Beccles Town Council
Beccles Bell Tower opens again for tours
Beccles Bell Tower will open again for tours from Easter Saturday (March 30th).
Once you've walked up the 122 steps to the roof, you will be treated to a bird's eye view of Beccles and spectacular views across the Waveney Valley.
Visitors will be given an informative guided tour on the way up, including a chance to see the historic bells.
Prices are £3 for over 16s and £1.50 for children aged over 4.
Dogs are not allowed to go up the Tower, but we are happy to keep your dog safe in the reception area whilst you go up the Tower.
Please note that all opening times are subject to weather conditions and the availability of volunteers.
The Tower is closed on days when there's a wedding at the Church (in order to give the bell ringers access to the Tower).
The Bell Tower is run by some fantastic, knowledgeable volunteers, but they need some extra hands this summer! So, if you'd like to join their team and volunteer some time (whatever time you can), please email: admin@becclestowncouncil. gov.uk or pop into the Bell Tower on a Saturday for an informal chat.
1st Bungay Sea Scouts Leaders release memoir
For 46 years, Peter Jermy, Graham Pritchard and Gary Fenn have been the leaders of the 1st Bungay (School) Sea Scout Troop.
Their hard work, commitment and dedication have had a huge impact on the lives of many young lads, inspiring, nurturing, teaching life skills and giving the boys opportunities to experience and develop a variety of interests. (I say "boys" as girls were not allowed in Scouts at that time). They have been encouraged by a former scout, who later became a leader himself, to record their antics and memoirs in a book and 'No Throwing Apples' is the result (no clues as to why it has this title). There are some amusing stories; I'm sure they would not get away with some of their escapades in this day and age!
The book is on sale at The Chocolate Box, Bungay and Bungay Library at a cost of £9.95. All proceeds going to the 1st Bungay (School) Sea Scout Group.

to sleep under a bridge on March 15th in Beccles, where he fished as a boy, for Royal British Legion Industries' 'The Great Tommy Sleep Out'.
Having served in the Royal Air Force for 19½ years, with deployments to the Falkland Islands, Afghanistan, Cyprus, Qatar, and Kuwait, Corporal Gareth Mison will take part in Royal British Legion Industries' (RBLI) 'The Great Tommy Sleep Out' to raise money for the charity's work with homeless veterans.
'The Great Tommy Sleep Out' is RBLI's annual flagship fundraising event. Each March, people across the UK sleep outdoors for one night or more to experience, in a small way, the reality of life for the country's estimated 6,000 homeless veterans. 'The Great Tommy Sleep Out' is open to individuals, groups, and companies. As everyone has different abilities, it's up to the person/people taking part to pick their location, plan their night or nights sleeping outside, and fundraise.
Gareth Mison, 37, from Beccles, said: "I got lucky, and have landed a job with Morrisons
Telecom that suits my personal needs, but not everyone is so lucky. In the RAF, I was deployed all around the world doing logistics and because M Group recognises the skill set that brings and understands how veterans work, they took a chance on me. If me sleeping outside under a bridge for one night can help just one homeless veteran, that will be an amazing achievement. In the morning, I can go home to my family, but so many don't have that."
If you would like to sponsor Gareth, visit: www.facebook. com/donate/1292233651448939, or scan the QR code.
Lisa Farmer (RBLI's Chief Executive) said: "When you think that an estimated 6,000 veterans are street homeless in the UK right now, the support from people like Gareth who take part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out has never been more important. The Great Tommy Sleep Out is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women who find themselves without a home when they return to civilian life. This is an important issue, and we are working with the Office for Veterans' Affairs to reduce veteran homelessness and end rough sleeping."
Harleston Choral Society returns after Easter break
Harleston Choral Society will be returning after the Easter break (and a highly successful March Quiz Evening) on April 15th, at 7pm (for a 7:30pm start), in The London Road Church, Harleston IP20 9BH.
Since January, we've been rehearsing Saint-Saëns Requiem and Dvořák Mass in D Major for our Summer Concert on June 29th.
It's never too late to join us, there are no auditions, and music is provided free. Practices are on a Monday evening 7:30pm-9:30pm and parking is available in The Original Factory Shop, almost opposite the church.
www.harlestonchoralsoc.org.uk or from Stella Brownsea at: heidihouse@btinternet.com.
If you would like to take part in 'The Great Tommy Sleep Out', go to: www.rbli.co.uk/sleepout to sign up.
RBLI can move veterans who are homeless into Mountbatten Pavilion, its emergency accommodation within 24 hours of referral. Last year, the demand for RBLI's services for homeless veterans increased by 45%, and with the cost-of-living crisis, the charity expects the cost of
housing those already supported to more than treble. Every penny raised from 'The Great Tommy Sleep Out' will go directly to RBLI's wide range of services providing a home, welfare, and employment support to Armed Forces veterans.

Anne Wincott was invited to the event along with Waveney MP Peter Aldous and the town's mayor, Cllr Christine Wheeler.
The hospital's League of Friends
also attended, as well as representatives from East Coast Community Healthcare (ECCH), which runs the hospital, and Beccles Medical Centre, which shares the site.
A display of historical photographs, books and artefacts informed visitors of the role the hospital has had in the community and how it has adapted and changed over the years.
Anne, who opened the exhibition and unveiled a new commemorative plaque, said: "It's an honour to be here to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the hospital on behalf of the Elliott family. My great-grandfather would be very proud of all that's been achieved over the years."
The hospital opened in 1924 having cost £12,000 to build.
The town's residents had donated £7,000 following an appeal and this was boosted by a gift from Alexander Elliott of a stretch of land between St. Mary's Road and Priory Road, which is still the site of the hospital today.
When the hospital was opened by Major-General Sir Anthony Bowlby, commanding officer of the 54th East Anglian Division, it had 24 beds and for many years boasted its own operating theatre.
Former Matron and League of Friends Trustee, Pam Hardman, from Worlingham, joined the hospital as a staff nurse in 1960. She said: "I have very happy memories over the years. When I started it was just the old building and we had an operating theatre where we used to do operations. We gave a good service to the town and to the people of Beccles. Today's celebration has been amazing and it's nice to have Anne here to represent the Elliott family."
In 2017, £1.65 million was spent transforming the hospital into an intermediate care unit with inpatient facilities for those requiring medical care but not needing acute support in a general hospital. A new day room was created at the same time, thanks to the League of Friends.
Since 2019, ECCH has provided a specialist palliative care service on Minsmere Ward in partnership with St. Elizabeth Hospice, and in 2022 the ward replaced traditional paper patient records with a pioneering digital monitoring system linked directly to patients' GPs, ensuring that the
ward is at the forefront of modern medical care.
Adele Madin, Executive Director of Operations at ECCH, said: "As well as celebrating all the wonderful things that have happened here and the good care that's been delivered over the years, this is also an opportunity to celebrate the future. We know that, with digital technology and advances in medicine, the future of the hospital is strong. We will continue to innovate and to evolve what we do to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care in their communities as close to their homes as possible."

Flowers End Funerals
My name is Jill Yaxley and I am an independent funeral celebrant able to officiate at funeral services in the Norfolk and Suffolk area. I feel that I have become a certified funeral celebrant at the most perfect time. It seems
that my life experiences and previous career paths have led me to this role. My previous roles include work as a Family Support Officer for Social Services and in pastoral care at a local school. Many of the families I supported back then remember me years

later, for all the right reasons I hope!
A few years ago I semi-retired, indulging my interested in gardening, walking and modern line dancing. Until early 2023 I was my late father and mother's permanent carer. It was humbling and satisfying to be able to give something back to my wonderful parents who has selflessly loved and encouraged me throughout my life.
So, now here I am, at your service and ready to support you through one of the most traumatic experiences we encounter as humans; the loss of a loved one. I am happy to officiate at either non-religious funerals or funerals for those who still want an element of religion / spirituality included. I will create a bespoke and personalised service for your loved one following a meeting with you and your family to gently discuss your wishes. I can tailor my delivery of the service to suit your exact requirements.
I am available for Monday, Wednesday or weekend funerals.
I trained with The Academy of Professional Celebrants and was awarded the 'Certificate of Distinction in Funeral Celebrancy'.I hold Professional Liability Insurance and Public Indemnity Insurance.
Beccles weather report
February: Mild and wet and winter 2023/2024 marks second-mildest on record
This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles.
February 2024
• Maximum temp: 16.0C
(61F) on the 15th compared with 15.3C (59F) in February 2023.
• Minimum temp: -1.5C (29F) on the 24th compared with -4.0C (25F) in February 2023.
• Average maximum temp: 11.44C (52F) in 2024. 10.17C
(50F) in 2023. 7.50C (45F) on average.
• Average minimum temp: 5.07C (41F) in 2024. 3.24C (38F) in 2023. 1.90C (35F) on average.
• Mean temp: 8.25C (46F) in 2024. 6.86C (44F) in 2023. 4.70C (40F) on average.
• Air frosts: 1 compared with 4 in February 2023.
• Rainfall total: 4.38" compared with 0.16" in February 2023.
(30-year-average (19812010) 1.84"). (2024 total: 238% of average).
• Most rainfall on one day: 0.79" on the 8th.
• Wind direction, mainly from: South-west 12 days, west 8 days, south 3 days and north 2 days. There were also 2 days which were calm. February 2024 was much milder and wetter than average. This again reinforces the theory that "warmer air being able to hold more moisture than cold air" during an overall milderthan-average winter period.
What a contrast with February 2023, when just 0.16" was noted on only 4 rain days which made it the 6th driest of
any on my entire 55 year record at the time. It was also the driest winter month. This year, February recorded a total of 4.38 inches, making it the wettest February on my record, exceeding previous highs of 4.16 inches in 2001 and 4.02 inches in 2010.
9 days recorded 0.24 inches (6mm) or more, of which 6 of these at least 0.40 inches (10mm). The wettest day 0.79 inches (20mm) on the 8th, was the wettest February day since 06/02/2014. While successive totals of 0.48 inches on 17th and 0.58 inches on 18th made up a very soggy 15 hour period over the course of two recording days. The succession of fronts and depressions moving in from the Atlantic was again a major driver to the month's weather. The exceptions occurred during the first 5 days when high pressure had a temporary hold and another 5 day period without recordable rain gave us temporary respite 24th to 28th inclusive.
This was the 8th consecutive wetter-than-average month, during which time 30.85" inches has been recorded since 1st July 2023 compared to long term average annual total of 25.60" (a rate 60% above expectation). Snowfall was absent for the second February running. Only the 3rd instance of consecutive Februaries being "snowless". Previous being 1997/1998 and three successive 1975/1976/1977.
This was the mildest February on my entire record exceeding previous best mean temperature in 1990 by 0.7C. This was the 6th successive milder than average February and the 3rd very mild
example running. The average maximum temperature exceeded 11.4C (around 4C above longterm average) . It was also the 4th consecutive February (and 5th out of 6) to achieve 1 day of at least 15.0C. Such a run had only been previously achieved in Februarys of 1989 to 1991 inclusive to highlight how unusual this occurrence once was during a winter month. This month's 16.0C remains some way short of the very mildest February days, 19.2C on 23/02/2012 and 19.0C on 26/02/2019 but was the highest value since that 2019 recording.
During this February, only 8 of the 29 days failed to achieve daytime maximum of 10C and above. In addition, there were no really cold days for this time of the year, the lowest maximum of 7.0C on the 7th had only been bettered for this statistic on 2 other instances in February of 2000 (7.5C) and 1990 (7.2C). Although slightly less impressive, average minimum temperature exceeded the longterm average by nearly 3.2C. There was only 1 night which recorded an air frost (24th). Only 4 other February instances in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2020 being the others while only 2022 avoided an air frost entirely. On the other hand, there were also a number of mild nights for the time of year, an unprecedented 14 nights achieved an air minimum of 6.0C or better. The very mildest, 10.5C on the 14th equalled the best for a February night (with 15/02/2020) since 2011. Followed closely by 10.4C on the following night.
Winter 2023/2024 (Dec/Jan/Feb)
• Average maximum temp: 9.6C (2.1C above 1981-2010 average).
• Average minimum temp: 4.1C (1.9C above 1981-2010 average).
• Mean temperature: 6.9C (2.0C above 1981-2010 average).
• Total rainfall: 10.19 inches (160% of average).
Damp and mild sums up this winter season. This was the 2nd mildest winter on my record.
Winter 2006/2007 with mean temperature of 7.0C was just 0.1C higher.
Consistently, mild February and December (except the 1st week of that month) along with "fluctuating" January which included 15 days of colder conditions, while the remainder of month was somewhat milder than average.
No doubt the headlines from the winter season will be about the persistence of rainfall. 52 of the 91 days during the season recorded rainfall, 17 of which recorded 0.24 inches (6mm) or more. February was the wettest 2nd month of the year on record (238%).
Both December (133%) and January (125%) made up the wettest winter season since 2020/2021 (11.48") and before that, 2009/2010 (10.44").
Again, this contrasts with what I was reporting this time last year. The 4.66 inch rainfall total then made it the driest winter since 2016/2017. Conversely, 51 of the 90 winter days had no recordable rainfall.

The Canterbury Tales
Presented by Half Cut Theatre
Pay What You Decide, After The Show www.halfcuttheatre.co.uk/book 204840
Half Cut Theatre are delighted to be visiting Beccles for the first time with some of the most romantic, ridiculous and raucous stories you've ever pretended to have read: Geoffrey Chaucer's, The Canterbury Tales. All good stories start down the pub, and this one is no different.
A mismatched group of travellers ready themselves for a gruelling journey. Some have an axe to grind but all have a tale to tell. Will anybody actually make it to Canterbury? There's only one way to find out.
Fresh from delighting audiences with their "sparky, funny and beautifully-acted" 'Much Ado About Nothing' and then utterly terrifying them before thankfully uplifting them
with their "ominous, uncanny and very effective" 'A Christmas Carol', Half Cut Theatre are thrilled to be hitting the road once again!
Half Cut believe that theatre should be available for all so it works like this: Book your tickets for free at www.halfcuttheatre. co.uk/book and then pay what you decide by cash or contactless card after the show. But hurry as tickets are going fast!

Chicken & Bac Picnic Pie
Method:
- Pre-heat your oven to 200°C.
Small
www.placesandfaces.co.uk
Ingredients: Serves 6-8
• 375g Ready-rolled shortcrust pastry.
• 200g turkey mince.
• 200g chicken breast, diced.
• 100g bacon lardons.
• 150g shelled pistachios, crushed.
• 1 tsp ground black pepper.
• Small bunch chopped parsley.
• 1 egg, beaten.
• 1 chicken stock cube.
• 1 gelatine leaf.
• 3 shallots, finely chopped.
- Remove the shortcrust pastry from the pack and lay into your lightly greased loaf tin, saving enough to make a lid.
- Mix the turkey mince, diced chicken breast, bacon lardons, pistachios, shallots, parsley, salt and pepper in a bowl.
- Add the mixture to the loaf tin then brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg and the add the pastry lid, pressing down to form a seal.
- Make two holes along the centre of the lid. (This is where we will pour in the gelatin stock mixture later).
- Brush with beaten egg and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until
the pastry is crisp and golden.
- When the pie has about 20 minuets left, brush the top with more egg and season with flaky sea salt. If you feel the pastry is browning too much, drop the heat to 180°C.
- Once done, remove from the tin and set to one side.
- Dissolve the stock cube in 100ml of boiling water.
- In another bowl, soak the gelatine in water, and once soft, squeeze out any excess, then add to the hot stock. Mix together until the gelatine is dissolved.
- Pour in the holes on the top of your pie and then leave to cool. When cool, place in the fridge for at least three hours to set.

Members of Halesworth Swift Group with Les Hambling, nestbox maker
Halesworth Swifts Group welcome the 2024 Swift season
Halesworth Swifts Group held two successful Open Evenings at the Coop Community room in March.
This was an opportunity to meet up with supporters and sponsors and to assess what work we will be doing this spring, ready to welcome swifts back to Halesworth.
We had various types of nest box and swift bricks on display as well as the sound systems that are used to attract swifts to new homes.
Halesworth Swifts are holding an Open Morning in the Coop Community Room on Good
Friday, March 29th from 10am12pm.
We will be available to provide information and advice about swifts and we welcome supporters and offers of sponsorship. Even if your own home is not suitable for swift nests you can help give swifts a home and perhaps sponsor a nest box in the Town. We also provide advice to builders and scaffolders about working with nesting birds. The swifts will be arriving at the beginning of May so its full steam ahead to obtain nest boxes and have them installed before the nesting season begins. Please email: halesworthswfts@gmail.com for information about the meeting and sponsorship.

Janet with some of her beautiful arrangements.
Wenhaston Flower Club
We commenced our 2024 program with a wonderful demonstration by Janet Dye. Janet was a new demonstrator to us but she inspired us all with some interesting techniques especially in her arrangement of tulips and roses without the use of floral foam. We hope Janet will become one of our regular demonstrators.
Our next meeting is on April 2nd and as usual, in Wenhaston Village Hall at 7:30pm. This meeting is going to be something
completely new for us. The evening is titled 'Members Take Over'. Some of our more experienced arrangers will be our demonstrators for the evening. It will be an excellent evening and look forward to welcoming you all.
As usual, it's only £5 on the night including tea/coffee and biscuits. Raffle prizes always welcome.
For more information, contact Jackie Chenery on: 01502 478401.

Beccles Open Gardens
The Town Council are excited to revive this popular event in Beccles on June 15th. We have some wonderful gardens already confirmed but need more gardens to make the experience as reqarding as possible.
If anyone would like to take part by opening up thier garden, big or small, wildflower gardens, or more traditional, there is no strict criteria other than being in walking distance of the town centre.
If you'd like to open up your garden, please get in touch by emailing: admin@ becclestowncouncil.gov.uk

How pet ownership enhances physical and mental wellbeing
But with great pet ownership comes great responsibility. It's important to remember that pets rely on us for their wellbeing, and as such, we need to take their care seriously. This means providing them with adequate food, water, shelter and exercise, as well as ensuring they receive regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.
appropriate food and housing. By understanding and meeting these needs, we can help our pets to thrive.
and serotonin, which can help to reduce anxiety and depression. Pets can also be great company for those who live alone or struggle with socialising, providing a source of comfort and friendship.
It's also important to educate ourselves on the specific needs of our pets. For example, dogs need regular exercise and socialisation to stay healthy and happy, while cats require regular access to clean litter boxes and scratching posts. Smaller pets like rabbits and guinea pigs also require specific care, including
Aside from the physical benefits of pet ownership, the companionship and love that pets provide can have a profound impact on our mental health. Studies have shown that pet owners have lower levels of depression and anxiety, and are more likely to experience feelings of happiness and contentment. Caring for a pet can also provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be especially beneficial for those struggling with mental health issues.
Of course, pet ownership
isn't for everyone. It's important to consider factors like lifestyle, living arrangements and financial responsibilities before bringing a pet into your home. Pets require time, attention and financial resources, and as such, it's important to make sure you can provide for them before committing to ownership.
But for those who are able to provide a loving home for a pet, the rewards can be immeasurable. From the unconditional love they provide to the joy they bring into our lives, pets are truly one of life's greatest blessings. By caring for them with responsibility and dedication, we can ensure that our furry friends are happy, healthy and loved.

Upgrades planned for Waveney Meadow
Thank you to those of you who took part in our consultation about our plans for the Waveney Meadow site. We have now applied for planning permission from the Broads Authority to replace the existing worn-out play equipment with new equipment which will be sited a little higher up the site.
The plans also include removing three pine trees, two of which are dying.
We hope that the new play equipment will be installed before the summer. We'd like to thank East Suffolk Council and Beccles Townlands Charity for their financial support with this project.
New equipment being installed
Beccles Townlands Charity and Gillingham Marshes
Running diagonally across the Gillingham marshes, a wooded embankment can be seen, which is the former trackbed of the Beccles to Bungay railway line.
Beccles Townlands Charity (the Feoffees) previously owned 32 acres of the marshes beside this track and in 2021, the opportunity arose to buy a further 63 acres on the other side of the track. In addition to marshes, the land included the river bank up to Gillingham and roughly 500 metres of the former railwayline. The railway opened in 1863 and ran to Bungay, Harleston and Tivetshall where it joined the main Norwich line. The line operated for 100 years and crossed the river enabling trains to start and finish journeys at Beccles Station.
After closure, sadly, the track bed was sold off. The section crossing Gillingham marshes
passed through various hands and for a while, the public could access the line for walking purposes. However, in more recent years, access was closed by barbed wire, locked gates and undergrowth. Bearing in mind that this is a beautiful area on Beccles' doorstep, it seemed appropriate to open up the line for public usage by means of a permissive footpath. A circular walk can be made by means of the river bank footpath and the newly created public footpath into Gillingham at the end of the line.
The marshes are let for hay and grazing by cattle in the summer months and mid-tier countryside stewardship grants have been obtained to clear and dredge neglected dykes and encourage wildlife. The Water, Mills and Marshes Project of the Broads Authority has supported the charity and it is hoped that benches and display boards
concerning the railway heritage will soon be added.
Various wildlife organisations have given advice on the ecology, wildlife and fauna and the Broads Authority Peat Project has visited and taken samples. An ornithologist on a recent visit recorded 22 different species of birds in a two-hour period.
Buzzards, Marsh Harriers, Kestrels, Lapwings, a Hen Harrier and a flight of Cranes have been seen. The tree-lined embankment provides cover and food for birds and the gaps between the trees give an elevated view over the flat surrounding marshes. The embankment can be reached via a gated track from Gillingham Dam or via the riverbank footpath.
In the hands of Beccles
Townlands Charity it is hoped that the area will be an enhancement and a benefit to the town of Beccles for many years to come.

Bungay Camera Club Open Competition report
A large number of images submitted by members of Bungay Camera Club saw the first competition of 2024 take place on the evening of February 28th.
The 'Open Competition' saw 21 colour prints, 19 mono prints and 22 projected images on show for the guest judge, Simon Ciappara FRPS, to appraise and score.
Mr. Chiappara (a member of Norwich and District Photographic Society and visiting Bungay Club for the first time) received a warm welcome as he introduced himself prior to carrying out his duties.
Beginning with the colour prints, which were described as "an eclectic mix of a high standard and showing some exquisite details".
Mr. Chiappara selected two winning images, 'Besided the Dead Sea' by Jane Murphy RPS and 'Jelly Eared Fungi' by Andy Wilson ARPS, both of which scored 20 points.
The mono prints followed, which again showed a great variety of subjects for the judge to critique. The winning image 'Caught in Time' by Sue Grief RPS, was described as, "a beautiful simple photograph of a pebble in the sand with pin sharp bubbles and catch lights. Making this a stunning image".
Mr. Chippara commented that: "the PDI's have some truly impactful images. One stood out and that was the image titled 'Thirsty Hornet' by Mark Gray. A wonderfully made photograph and deserving of a maximum score and top place."
Club Chairman, Sue Grief RPS thanked Mr Chiappra for giving of his time to travel to the club and provide such an interesting and informative commentary and critique of all images. The hints and tips about how some of the images might be improved with a second viewing, left everyone going home with greater knowledge.
The club members awarded marks of 20 and 19 points were,

National Recognition Awards at Danhire Trailers & Towbars
On January 26th, Danhire Trailers welcomed the High Sheriff of Suffolk and Sarah Smithurst MBE, the Business Development Manager of the National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA). Danhire had been awarded a top award from the NTTA in recognition of their dedicated service and work with trailer/ caravan road safety, which includes working with the Armed Road Policing Team to help check trailers during roadside stops.
Sarah Smithurst MBE travelled down from the NTTA Headquarters in Nottingham
to introduce the High Sheriff of Suffolk, who presented the award to Mark and Mike (Directors of Danhire). With complete surprise, the High Sheriff revealed he too was presenting another major award to Danhire, a 'Certificate of Recognition' on behalf of the communities for sterling work in Suffolk. Certainly a day held at the Danhire 'Accreditation 5 Star Workshops' to remember! It turned out to also be a surprise to Nidge Bedingfield, of IMAJAZ Ltd web/graphics/arts company (www.imajaz.com), as he was also presented with a well earned 'Certificate of Recognition' from
Danhire Trailers, by The High Sheriff of Suffolk. Nidge has known Mike for many years, and has been the Webmaster for their website ever since they started their business journey (www. danhiretrailers.co.uk). Mike always says: "Websites do really work", as Nidge regularly posts up information on the website of trailers for sale, and it's not long before a happy buyer phones in to make a purchase! Nidge is also known locally for being joint instructor with his wife Susie at the successful ICENI Taekwon-do Club!
Willow Cosmetics was established in 2019 and I now have more than 130 five-star reviews on Facebook. I started my Training Academy two years later in 2021.
All courses are ABT accredited and this side of my business allows me to embrace a passion for teaching.
Originally, my business was based in and around Oulton Broad. However, when I moved to Beccles in 2022, I fell in love with the town and opening my own clinic in Beccles became a goal as soon as I moved here. When the Corner House came available, I gave myself four weeks to completely renovate the premises and opened the doors on Tuesday 5th March. The clinic has been purpose built and designed with both my training and treatments in mind.
I offer a comprehensive range of semi-permanent make-up, and aesthetic treatments and am best known for Ombre Brows. Clients are usually overwhelmed and wowed by the result which can last anything from one to three years! I also offer the most innovative and effective facial treatments such as hydro facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning and microneedling.
Alongside this, I offer hugely popular aesthetic treatments including; anti-wrinkle injections, hydrating and tightening skin boosters, treatments that specifically target the under eye area reducing puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles.
From April, I will also be adding facial dermal fillers to the treatments I offer.
A full range of treatments offered and training courses available can be found on my website and social media pages.

GrandDriver courses
GrandDriver, run by the Suffolk County Council Road Safety Team, is a scheme for anyone over the age of 60 who currently drives and would like to keep driving for as long as possible.
There are two parts to the scheme: A theory workshop, and a driving assessment. The workshop lasts for three hours and we discuss how driving has changed, and how to cope with this as we get older, how our health can affect driving, and simple adaptations you can make to ensure your comfort in the car. There is a chance to discuss any concerns you may have about driving. We also have a refresh on the Highway Code and do some hazard perception. The driving assessment is
Beccles Town Council
arranged at a time and place to suit you, takes place in your own car and lasts for around an hour. The trainer will discuss any aspects of the drive that are increasing your risk and offer suggestions and alternatives to reduce your risk. At the end, you'll receive a written report outlining all that was discussed.
Both the workshops and the driving assessments are currently free of charge to attend. For a full list of workshop dates around Suffolk please visit: www.suffolkroadsafe.com.
If you'd like to book, or would like more information, please call Jane Holland on: 01473 341517 or emailling: jane. holland@suffolkhighways.org.

Aldeburgh Carnival 2024 80th Anniversary
This year, Aldeburgh Carnival will celebrate its 80th Anniversary and we promise, as always, to deliver a spectacular event on August 19th and over the weekend.
The theme for the 2024 Carnival is "All things 80's" to include music, film and anniversaries!
Many of you may be wondering what goes on between the close of the 2023 Carnival and the start of the 2024 Carnival?
Well the answer is... ALOT! The Aldeburgh Carnival committee team meet monthly to not only look at what went well, but also to analyse what we could do better to ensure that we all enjoy a fabulous Carnival.
So, in regards, to what planning is in process, I wanted to share the following:
• 1: We're building a programme of events for 2024 and this programme will be available to buy, to guide you over the Carnival weekend, all funds
going to our charities.
• 2: We're thinking about our 2024 Carnival Queen and her attendants. This will be decided upon by April.
• 3: We're hoping for even more floats to take part in the Carnival day procession. Please start to think about this. It really is a fun thing to do.
• 4: We're engaging with many entertainers. For example, the Essex Caledonian pipe band to entertain us all across four fun-packed days.
• 5: We're planning the silent auction and gathering prizes to encourage further fundraising.
• 6: We're thinking about the firework display and how we compete with the 2023 display which was spectacular.
• 7: We will have our ever popular lantern parade from the High Street to the beach for fireworks.
• 8: We're carefully considering traffic management and foot traffic to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
• 9: We're liaising with local police to ensure we're running the Carnival safely and efficiently.
• 10: To top it all, we're planning some 'special events for 80th Aldeburgh Carnival' in addition to our usual full and exciting agenda.
Each year, we rely heavily on the support and generosity of our sponsors and advertising platforms as well as Carnival volunteers, so a BIG thank you to all!
Volunteers Needed:
With regard to volunteers, we really need some extra hands over Carnival weekend to support us.
If you have a spare hour or two, please do email the Carnival PR team: info@aldeburghcarnival.com, and we will happily guide your interest.

Waveney Athletics Club
Last Wednesday, we at Waveney Valley Athletics Club took part in foodbankrun. This is an initiative where club runners from groups across the country organise a run to donate food to the local foodbank.
We've done two foodbank runs now, the first in February last year and the more recent one last week. Our club runners ran with some desperately needed products to donate to the local foodbank, for us it was Waveney Foodbank. The heavier items were driven to the donation point.
Waveney Foodbank's Operations Manager and another volunteer were kind enough to meet us at St. Luke's in Beccles for the handover. They later confirmed that we had donated a massive 85kg of products!
We are a road running club in Lowestoft and Beccles and we also have a growing Athletic Club which is based in Lowestoft. We
are a happy, friendly and social club with over 390 members, more than half of the running members being ladies, and around 100 athletes. We welcome new members of all abilities, from beginners to more serious runners. Runners can come along to one of our training evenings in Oulton Broad or Beccles. For more information, please visit: www.waveneyvalley.org

Beccles Ladies Hockey Club triumphs 7-1
over Dereham 5s
The score really did not reflect the game on March 2nd, as despite Beccles scoring a plethora of goals, mainly coming in the second half, they had to work hard to get and keep possession.
Dereham had a mixture of young and experienced players, and they started the game very well. They were good at cutting out opposition passes, and at running at the defence with the ball. The defence did extremely well to keep Dereham out, and it was good to see the return of Tina at left defence after several weeks out following her shoulder injury.
However, it was Beccles who eventually opened the scoring after 26 minutes, when Ruth Swann went on a run down the right side of the pitch, into the D and cracked the ball into the goal.
Soon after, Jodie Sharp positioned just outside the D, sent the ball to Debbie Mann who struck the ball first time into the back of the net and the score remained 2-0 at half time.
Dereham got one back early in
the second half, and it looked like this was going to be a very tough game and Beccles had to work hard. Beccles really got it together in the second half, putting together some good close team passes and using the unmarked player to their advantage. Hannah Devine gained ground down the left side, and then put in some great balls into the D where Ellie Kirby on the post only had to slot the ball into the open goal.
Another of Ellie's goal she had to work much harder, as she beat the defence and the approaching keeper making her a tally of four goals all in the second half.
Jodie Sharp got the other goal for Beccles. Obviously, these goals could not have been possible had it not be for a great team effort by all the players. So, after a bit of a shaky start, Beccles came out clear winners, although Dereham made them work for it.

Beccles and Bungay Harriers Athletics Club run to support Waveney Foodbank
Local
"The running community supporting the
community" said Sarah Don, Campaign Founder.
The movement was started by Sarah Don from Fareham, Hampshire, and support for it has grown each year. The movement was setup to support foodbanks during the period after Christmas, when foodbank stocks are at their lowest, and families are struggling the most to put food on
the table. As part of the campaign, running clubs are encouraged to organise runs to local foodbanks, to donate and deliver food. So far, over 500 running clubs across the UK have supported the Foodbank Run movement.
In support of the campaign, Beccles and Bungay Harriers AC organised two foodbank runs in February, from their two training locations in Bungay and Beccles. During each run, club members brought along much needed food items to Waveney Foodbank. In total, 27 members of the club ran and donated food items to foodbank locations in Bungay Co-op and Beccles Tesco. Many thanks to Matt Scade, from
Waveney Foodbank, who gave up his time and attended each evening to receive donations.
The club hopes by participating in the initiative, they can draw attention to the essential work of Waveney Foodbank, support families in their local community and encourage others to donate, fundraise and support local foodbanks. Want to donate money directly?
You can donate money directly to Waveney Foodbank via: www.waveney.foodbank.org.uk

ICENI Taekwon-do become an independent ITF Martial Arts & Self Defence Club
ICENI Taekwon-do have become an independent ITF Martial Arts and Self Defence club. Not only continuing their traditional teaching of taekwondo, but also taking their club to a new level by grading students to black belt at their dojang in Beccles. All students now have a direct route from white belt to black belt without having to travel hundreds of miles for black belt grading.
Another innovation is the starting up of an Alumni Jee-Goo Club for all previous and existing black tags and black belts, an open invitation, twice a month, with the aim to help everyone retain or regain their skills and wellbeing.
Continuing to be part of ICENI Taekwon-do, but without the pressures of regular training or a grading regime. A chance to meet up with old sparring partners for a kick-about or just some stress

Brampton's
We had some wonderful costumes for World Book Day at
The Reception children were excited to show the rest of the school what they had chosen to wear. Activities included some of the older children reading to the Reception children, teachers swapping classes to share their favourite books and parents coming into school for a reading sharing session before home time. It was a wonderful day with so many exciting books!
In the run up to World Book
Day, the Reception class at Bramfield enjoyed Michael Rosen's wonderfully rhythmic book 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'. The children know all the words and phrases and explored how to enhance their story telling by adding sound effects. They used rainmakers for the swishy swashy grass and a bottle filled with water for the splashy sploshy river. They also created their own bear hunt obstacle course in our outdoor area, using our large construction equipment to represent fields, forests and even snow storms.
