It supports the local economy, helps reduce food miles and you get the best seasonal ingredients which can only make for better tasting dishes! Bungay has several fantastic food and drink suppliers and producers. If you are a carnivore then a trip to either Palfrey & Hall or John Groom Butchers is a must. John Groom Butchers has been a fixture in Bungay for many years and sells high quality meat along with fruit and veg and a full selection of treats from the delicatessen counter. Palfrey & Hall are new to the town but have quickly established an excellent reputation as a high-end butchers shop. Both shops offer traditional customer service and are extremely happy to help customers with any advice of which cuts work best for certain dishes and how to get the best results. Two high-class butchers in one town is a real treat!
There are greengrocers and bakeries in town so one little wander around and you can pick up everything from your shopping list. On the road out to Flixton you will pass Fen Farm Dairy. The farm has become renowned for producing superb dairy good including Baron Bigod Cheese and Bungay Raw Butter. There is also the UK’s first raw milk vending machine in the cow-print shed (you can’t miss it) so pop in and fill your own bottle.
You will be needing something to wash down all this delicious food. We have several wonderful producers on hand to help here. Ale lovers must try hand-crafted ales from Bull of the Woods owned by the Clifford brothers. All brewed on site on their family farm just outside Bungay. Their beers are available in some local pubs and shops but to find out more you are best off visiting their website – www. bullofthewoods.co.uk. To the south of Bungay you will come across St Peter’s Brewery and their selection of beers and to west is Flint Vineyard. This family run business is producing fantastic wines right here just outside Bungay.
This is just a snapshot of what is available on your doorstep. But we hope it gives you some ideas and inspiration to get out and support your local pubs, cafes and restaurants as well as the wonderful producers making sure the best local and seasonal ingredients are available to us all year round.
