Compact telehandler marks expansion to new sector
K
ubota has launched its first telehandler – as the company seeks to provide a wider range of machinery solutions for agriculture. The compact KTH4815-2 machine boasts width of 1.6m and height of below 2m – lending itself to farmers with traditional livestock or poultry buildings and other areas where space is limited. Model numbering indicates the telehandler’s lifting capability, with the KTH48152 achieving a maximum lift height of 4.8m and a maximum lift capacity of 1.5 tonnes, depending on the variant. Also part of the standard specification are hose-burst check-valves and a load-moment sensor with forward over-turn protection to meet EN15000 certification.
Eurohitch Hydraulic performance extends to as much as 81 litres/min, with 51 litres available through an auxiliary circuit for powered attachments on a hydraulically locking Eurohitch headstock. A proportional joystick includes adjustable flow rate and memory function.
An EU Stage V emissions compliantthreecylinder engine powers the KTH4815-2 with a peak output of 50hp. Mounted on the righthand side between the front and rear wheels, the transverse engine position is designed with easier servicing in mind. The hydrostatic driveline is equipped with Carraro axles connected by mechanical driveshafts. It has a Bosch Rexroth hydraulic motor delivering propulsion in two speed ranges– 0-7kph and 0-25kph. The powertrain affords multidisc brakes and, with permanent four-wheel drive, there is an option of a selectable front axle differential lock, to further boost traction. Four versions of the KTH4815-2 telehandler are available. Two are canopy-equipped models with a curved front screen, and two use fully glazed cabs with a two-piece door – and a glazed upper section which can be secured in the open position. The entry-level KTH4815-2 is supplied without a 170kg rear counterweight and is on 10/75x15.3 narrow tyres, reducing both its cost and performance. A wider 31/15.515 skid steer tyre option is available.

30th anniversary for Norfolk sugar beet specialists
M
achinery specialist J Riley Beet Harvesters is celebrating its 30th anniversary – marking three decades since the Norfolk-based company starting importing Vervaet sugar beet lifters to the UK from the Netherlands. Company founder Jeremy Riley – and colleagues Peter Smith and David Oakley – were heavily involved with the establishment of the six-row selfpropelled harvester as the machine of choice for the region’s sugar beet growers and contractors. With its four-wheel chassis, centrally-positioned tank and rearmounted engine, the Vervaet 17-tonne tanker model was the go-to machine for more than 20 years – and set the standard for most successful harvest-
ers of the time. It was followed by the Vervaet Beet Eater – the world’s first nine-row harvester. Although a number of nine-row machines were successfully used by British contractors, the machine eally excelled in the UK when it was fitted with a six-row lifting unit. With its eight turbines, six wheels and 600hp engine, the Beet Eater 625 developed a formidable reputation for high output even in the worst conditions. Refurbishing used harvesters and overhauling machines out of season have been important activities for the company. New premises were built at Attlebridge in 2007, included workshop and office facilities which al-
lowed the stores to be enlarged. The launch of the all-new Q-Series beet harvester in 2017 further cemented Vervaet’s market dominance. The company’s market share expanded again following the introduction of a rollerbed option in 2021. In 2022 Jeremy retired and sold the business, which is now co-owned by Vervaet and managing director Matt Carse. “Having good people within the company has been key to its success

over the past 30 years,” he says. “With a great team in place we are poised to continue the Riley story for the next three decades. “We very much appreciate the continued support from our loyal customers. We enjoy many long-lasting relationships, and we are keen to continue to offer the highest level of service in the industry.”
Slurry applicators Success has also been achieved with
Vervaet self-propelled slurry and manure applicators. The J Riley range of slurry handling and application machinery was recently expanded to provide further solutions to slurry customers. A team of 10 talented and experienced engineers currently provides service support to customers. The right machines for the UK market and exceptional backup are a winning combination, says Vervaet commercial director Jonathan Hoekman.
J Riley Beet Harvesters (UK) Ltd, the well-known Norfolk-based UK importer of Vervaet machinery, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024.
“The UK is a special market where our philosophy comes together perfectly,” he explains. “We believe three elements are key to customer retention – excellent machines, perfect service and backup – and low cost of ownership. “This success is now being duplicated in the slurry machinery sector too. With younger teams in place at both Vervaet and Rileys we have a secure future ahead of us to continue this ultra-successful story.”

Forage equipment key to farm enterprise success
A
Worcestershire farmer and contractor have upgraded their forage equipment to deliver an even better service. Father and son team Steve and William Page manage a 200ha beef and sheep enterprise, at Bosworth Farm, near Malvern. They have also built up a successful full-service grassland contracting business, serving customers in a 25-mile radius of the farm. The pair produce home-grown forage for their 80-head Simmental herd and 300 North of England Suffolk-cross ewes, while providing contracting services across neighbouring counties, explains Steve. “To help get the job done, we employ an extra member of staff, plus two more during busy periods, and have significantly invested in expanding

our range of forage equipment as the business has grown,” he says.
Forage strategy Since purchasing their first Krone BiG Pack 890 square baler in 2010, the Pages have upgraded twice – including to the 1290 XC model they have now – to produce 15,000 hay and straw bales annually. “We’ve chosen to stick with Krone balers with each upgrade to bigger machines because they’ve proven to reliably help meet the growing demands of the business. We find they produce good bale weights, even at high speed, which is crucial to us.” In addition to the baler, the Pages have also invested in a Swadro TC 880 twin-rotor rake, Vendro 900 8-rotor tedder and an EasyCut 320 tripledisc mower. The Swadro rake is now four years old, and is likely to be upgraded this year. “It’s fast becoming the most used and important piece of kit within the business. We upgraded our Vendro tedder from a six-rotor to the 900 eightrotor model last year and invested in an EasyCut mower for the first time this year. We hadn’t run triple mowers before, it’s been a game changer. “With quick operation, it knocks down a lot of acres in a day.The conditioner aids crop quality and the varying speed adjustments are helpful, particularly when working with lucerne, where it’s important we’re not too heavy on it.” Dealer support All machinery requirements are met by local dealer Pallisers of Hereford. “We’ve not had any major breakdowns, but when we’ve needed spare parts, we’ve never been stuck. Any or-

der is delivered the next morning and their back up is very good.” After finishing a busy season, the forage equipment is blown down, oiled, greased and stored for the winter, with the intention of arranging dealer servicing in the New Year. In addition to booking a winter service, Pallisers of Hereford’s Neil Lloyd recommends farmers also complete machinery checks. “I’d advise ensuring machines are kept clean and well-greased, along with refilling or changing oils as required.” Large balers should be dealer maintained and regularly serviced, but there are some practical checks farmers can complete before bringing equipment out the shed next season, says Mr Lloyd. “Baler specific checks include making sure the bearings don’t look too worn and, if there’s any doubt, replacing them. It’s also important to ensure the knotter area is clean – this can really impact how the baler works.” Any unusual noises, particularly from the bale plunger, should be checked professionally. Tedder tines occasionally need replacing and it is important to ensure tyre pressures are correct. “This is particularly the case for tedders and rakes used at high speed on hard ground. “It’s better to spend a few hundred pounds now to fix machines where necessary and avoid having a full breakdown in the field. It all adds to extending machine lifespans in the long run.”

Prescription nutrition ‘essential’ for £3.3m farm fertiliser project
A
£3.3m trial is examining ways to reduce the dependence of UK grassland farming on mineral nitrogen fertilisers. Called NUE-Leg, the Defra-funded project brings together scientific expertise and global leaders in plant breeding and soil microbiology, agronomy, carbon emissions and the farming and food supply chain. The consortium includes experts from Origin Fertilisers and Origin Digital. They will create digital platforms to enable farmers to maximise the potential of the project findings. If it works, the project will create the optimum conditions in a commercial farm setting to enable clover to fix up to 300kg of nitrogen per hectare per year – a large portion of which will be available for grass growth.
Balanced nutrition At these levels, additional mineral nitrogen fertilisers needed for grass growth can be significantly reduced –
placing greater emphasis on the importance of other minerals to create a balanced, nutritious crop. A key part of the project is to identify the specific nutritional requirements of these new legumes and to develop prescription nutrition programmes, said Peter Scott, technical director at Origin Fertilisers. “We also need to consider the other
Vicon showcases RotaFlow twin-disc spreader The Vicon RotaFlow twin-disc spreader was among the machines showcased by the Kverneland Group at last month’s LAMMA event. Aimed at the mid-market sector, the Vicon RO-M W Pro has a maximum volume of 2800 litres. It boasts a heavy duty frame with four load cells and reference sensor developed for intensive spreader use of the spreader, says the company. Vicon says its RotaFlow system ensures the smooth acceleration of fertiliser. The technology has already been proven on the RO-EDW spreader. A FlowPilot system enables quick and easy adjustment.

nutrients required to optimise yield, nitrogen uptake and conversion into protein and the mineral profile required for a high value forage and more sustainable livestock production.” Fertiliser programmes will be developed for both the crop establishment and maintenance phases. Origin Fertilisers will use its knowledge and expertise in prescription nutrition to match soil and crop requirements with nutritional inputs. “Nutrients such as phosphate, potassium, sulphur, calcium and magnesium will be required in varying amounts to meet crop needs,” says Mr Scott. “Other nutrients such as sodium will play a role in increasing crop palatability and intake. “As the sole fertiliser business in the project, our role is to identify the optimum nutrient profiles for these new legumes to provide the balance between optimised crop growth, livestock production and environmental enhancement.” Est.1986

continuous flow of fertiliser to the field. This is important for high capacity spreading and forward speed. Flat discs and a horizontal flow of fertiliser ensure a symmetrical spread pattern. A consistent double-overlap spreading pattern is achieved with fertiliser always contacting the vanes at the same point as it moves through the machine – travelling the complete length of the vane. With the Basic Section Control software on the RO-M W Pro weighing spreader, the number of sections are increased from two standard wide sections (left and right) into an even number of 4m sections.

Young engineer wins top award at LAMMA
A
Harper Adams graduate who invented a hi-tech slurry pump scooped the Young Engineer Award at last month’s LAMMA event. The Smart Slurry Pump has a real-time telemetry system that monitors key information from a remote-controlled tractor and umbilical slurry pump. It then relays this information to the remote operator at the applicator end of the umbilical pipeline.
Prototype pump Ieuan Evans said his invention came from spending countless hours operating a tractor driven umbilical slurry pump on his family’s dairy farm in Aberystwyth. He designed a prototype pump at Harper before developing it with Storth Machinery. By providing more information to the remote operator of the Smart Slurry Pump, the system
reduces the labour needed, makes better use of the existing tractor fleet, increases the fuel economy of slurry spreading and helps prevent pipe bursts or leaks. Mr Evans said: “It is a brilliant feeling to be recognised within the industry. A lot of hard work over many years went into creating the Smart Slurry Pump, but the journey has really helped me progress my career in a short space of time. “The project started during my time at Harper Adams, where a lot of the novel work was done, and I continued to develop it at Storth Machinery, where the full vision was realised. There is still lots of work to do though.” Mr Evans added: “We are aiming to increase the system’s monitoring capability to reassure users that the pump is working as intended, as well as helping them manage fuel efficiency and ob-

Bunning reintroduces trailer range at LAMMA
S
preader specialists GT Bunning & Sons showcased a redesigned four-model trailer range at last month’s LAMMA event – marking the company’s return to trailer manufacturing after 13 years. The four-model range will be built at Bunning’s factory at Gressenhall in Norfolk. The firm says reintroducing the trailer line is to meet customer demand and will maximise a 7000m² factory expansion completed over the past two years. Bunning sales director Chris Druce said: “We have been asked by existing Bunning customers for several years to start trailer production again and our recent factory expansion has allowed us to streamline the build process with cutting edge technology. “We’ve improved some key areas of the trailer that will please old and new customers and we are delighted with the final product.” The new range is based on the old design but has been improved

and modernised in certain areas and features a completely new tailboard. Four models will initially be available in 14t, 16t, 18t and 20t formats. Each will feature dual axles with larger bearings and multileaf suspension replacing the single parabolic system. The 4mm thick steel sides feature a single

welded join along the length to increase strength, and smooth internal faces prevent crop damage, says Mr Druce. The top rail and rear corner posts are deeper and wider, measuring 80x120mm to offer further strength. The 300x150mm chassis remains from the previous trailers and the 200x200mm
sprung drawbar has been proven on the spreader range. The tailgate is a completely new design. Constructed from pressed steel, it is tapered from the sides to the grain chute to aid unloading. As the hydraulic tailgate closes, a locking pin on either side is hydraulically activated, says Mr Druce.
