Next Generation Patented Drilling Blades Triton launched its unique deep soil engagement direct drill in 2018 to give plough based yields from direct drilling. 6 years later we are consistently achieving higher yields from the Triton than from ploughed trials on our own land. The Triton is the only all weather seed drill on the market that gives the flexibility to grow maximum profit autumn sown crops whilst reducing blackgrass from late drilling... several manufacturers are now also claiming all weather capability... if these are false claims then the farmer’s new approach will be thwarted.

Prime minister visits engineering apprentices
R
ishi Sunak joined agricultural engineering apprentices for a hands-on workshop about tractor maintenance at Writtle College University in Essex. The Prime Minister visited the WUC campus near Chelmsford to speak with young people about their passion for food and the farming sector. Apprentices spent time chatting about the workshop while demonstrating their understanding of agricultural machinery.
Skills gap The students are studying through a partnership launched in 2022 by CNH –manufacturers of Case IH Agriculture – with WUC to address the skills gap for specialist engineers within the agricultural sector. The apprentices are all currently employed by Case IH Agriculture local dealerships throughout England. A similar scheme is run at Rural College (SRUC) Oatridge campus, west of Edinburgh. CNH is passionate about supporting young people within the land-based education sector to ensure that the technologies of tomorrow are taught to the students whilst adhering to a high level of technical standards. Case IH Agriculture business director Andrew Parsons said:
“Agricultural engineers play a vital role in producing food for the nation and these apprenticeships are essential for training the future generation. “We are extremely proud to work alongside both WUC and SRUC in delivering and supporting these important courses within the land-based education sector.”
Challenging year Mr Sunak’s visit follows a Downing Street Farm to Fork summit earlier this year. The London event was held as the government said it recognised that the past year had been particularly challenging for farmers and growers. The Prime Minister said the summit was the next step in growing a thriving British food and drink sector, which would put more British produce on supermarket shelves in the UK and around the world. Ahead of the summit, Mr Sunak said: “I will always back British farmers, and I pay tribute to their hard work and dedication all year round which keeps shelves stocked and food on our tables. “Supporting our farmers and food producers must, and always will be, at the heart of our plans to grow the economy and build a more prosperous country.”

Claas approves hydrotreated vegetable oil for new machines
M
achinery giant Claas has announced that all new tractors and harvesters will be filled with sustainable biofuel before they leave the factory – reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The decision also sees the approval of hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) in all Claas self-propelled machines with engines that meet the latest Stage V emissions standards. The move from 1 October will save 2,500 tonnes of CO2 annually HVO consists mainly of used cooking oil and animal fats, along with vegetable oils.It doesn’t require any engine upgrades and can be used in conjunction with conventional diesel fuel. This means it doesn’t need any special storage facilities. Performance in terms of power, wear, durability or engine lifetime is similar to convential fuels and Claas says CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 90% over the life cycle of the engine. There are currently no realistic

gines, but using batteries in bigger machines would mean vehicles would have to be twice the size and weight. “There are no real alternatives to the combustion engine for high-performance agricultural machines in the foreseeable future,” explained Claas executive vice-president Martin von Hoyningen-Huene.
Ideal choice “We need solutions that reduce fossil fuel emissions associated with this type of drive, yet do not have significant adverse effects on manufacturing costs, consumption, weight and durability.” Hydrotreated plant oils were an ideal choice because they already exist and their positive environmental impacts were immediately apparent, said Mr von Hoyningen-Huene. All Claas machines from now on would be able to run on this sustainable liquid biofuel. A gradual de-fossilisation of agricultural production processes and agricultural machinery is needed in several respects, added Mr von Hoyningen-Huene. But this would only be feasible in practice with supportive government policies.

Fendt unveils new 600 Vario tractor
F
endt has launched a new fourmodel 600 series tractor range aimed at the 140-210hp market. Four models – 614, 616, 618 and 620 – offer power from 149hp to 209hp and feature the recently introduced DynamicPerformance system that can provide an additional 15hp regardless of forward speed. The 600 Vario range is powered by a newly developed four-cylinder fivelitre engine. This enables it to be used for towing heavy loads, carrying front tanks, or operating heavy mounted implements. The 620 Vario can reach a top speed of 50kph at 1,250 rpm. It offers 950Nm from 1200-1,600 rpm. With a power-to-weight ratio of 34.4kg/ hp the 600 Vario has a turning circle of just 10.2 metres with 540/65 R30 tyres. Fendt’s VarioDrive transmission features a single stage drive train which measures the slip on all four wheels to regulate power output. Min-
imising wheel slip using Fendt’s dynamic control system also provides greater traction whilst reducing soil compaction. A cab-operated reversable fan has been borrowed from larger Fendt tractors to aid operation in dusty conditions. The 600 also benefits from Fendt’s VarioGrip central tyre inflation system to improve tractive power and fuel consumption by up to 8 percent.
Alternative fuels The initial 50-hour service has been dropped in favour of a 500-hour service and there are maintenance-free hydraulic tappets built into the engine. The engine has also been prepared for alternative fuels, such as HVO, to lower CO2 emissions in the future. The FendtOne operating system communicates data from the cab to management software in the office. This onboard/offboard technology is

operated by a multifunction joystick, 10-inch digital dashboard and a 12inch terminal on the armrest. Fendt’s 3L joystick and another 12-inch terminal are also available as options. Functions such as the Fendt Guide guidance system, automatic section control and variable rate control are all displayed through easy to access tiles on the terminals.
Comfortable cab For operators, the VisioPlus cab is comfortable and ergonomic, with an excellent view for loader work. Optional windscreen heating is available and 600 operators can also specify a front and rear camera for improved visibility. The 600 Vario has been designed with loader users in mind and can be paired with the new generation of Fendt Cargo and Fendt CargoProfi front loaders, with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 34.6kN for the Fendt Cargo 5.90 at a height of up to 4.5 metres. The Fendt 600 Vario can be ordered from Agritechnica onwards, and production will start in summer 2024.
Mixed picture for new tractor registrations
N
ew tractor registrations for the first nine months of 2023 were 4% higher than the same period last year, according to the latest figures. But growth slowed to 2% during the third quarter of the year – and was largely confined to high-powered machines. Sales of 160hp+ machines were almost 20% higher than in January to September 2022, representing more than 800 extra machines. But there were 9% fewer tractors 6 Essential Farm Machinery November 2023
sold in the 51-160hp sector – a drop of over 400 machines, said Stephen Howarth, of the Agricultural Engineers Association.
Variable growth The pattern was somewhat different in the third quarter. While there was still strong growth for the largest machines (over 280hp), there were small year-on-year declines for most power bands below that level but above 110hp.
Instead, most growth was for tractors with engine power between 51hp and 110hp, which were up 12%, compared with July to September 2022, although they still accounted for fewer than one in six registrations of tractors over 50hp. Growth was strongest in the East Midlands, where 18% more tractors were registered this year. In contrast, the eastern region registered 15% fewer tractors in the third quarter than a year ago.

Focus on technology for better field application
E
xploring ways to increase the accuracy and consistency of fertiliser application will be a key focus for Kuhn Farm Machinery at this month's CropTec event. For users spreading varying types of fertiliser, an electronic mass flow control (EMC) meter offers precise regulation of product via each disc of Kuhn's high-output Axis H EMC 40.2 machine, which has a 42m spread. The machine will be on display at CropTec, held on 29-30 November at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Weighing on each disc prevents uneven fertiliser delivery to the individual discs that would create incorrect application, says Kuhn arable product specialist Edd Fanshawe.
Clog detection “By measuring the flow to each disc, the EMC can detect clogging by a foreign object,” says Mr Fanshawe. “Compared to traditional weigh cells, the
EMC system reacts quickly to issues and corrects them, preventing any stripping.” Kuhn's 1200 Isobus terminal will also on display. The 12-inch touchscreen includes fertiliser settings, guidance maps, additional cameras and field details on a single display. It can also display two Isobus machines should doing so be required. “Both screens offer clear displays, easy access to settings, and the ability to run everything from a fertiliser
The Isobus screen can run two machines through a single terminal.
Up to 30 different functions can be controlled from the touchpad
spreader to a baler,” explains Mr Fanshawe. “For tractors without an Isobus compatible screen or users wanting to keep implement and tractor displays separate, these interfaces allow Isobus equipment to be operated without needing to upgrade your tractor.” Further integration via a CCI A3 Isobus joystick allows users to operate 30 programmable functions from the single controller. Each function is shown in symbol format for ease of use and instant recognition, with a rear switch to toggle between control screens.

Bumper entry for 20th anniversary vintage show • Classic machines return to event • Celebration for farm enthusiasts • Showcase for region and beyond
T
he 20th anniversary of the Newark Vintage Tractor and Heritage Show is set to attract the most diverse range of machines in its history. Organised by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, the event takes place on 4-5 November at the Newark showground. It is supported by the Nottinghamshire branch of the National Vintage Tractor and Engine Club (NVTEC). Local farm contractor and vintage tractor collector Paul
Ducksbury has been involved with the show since the start. He lives just 14 miles north of the Newark showground – and says he is very much looking forward to the event.
Memorable classes “Little did we know what a success the show would become when we were planning the first one in 2003,” says Mr Ducksbury. The event is the pinnacle of the year, he adds. “It’s gone from strength to strength.

Mr Ducksbury took 34 tractors to one of the most memorable classes in the event’s history – a special display showcasing 100 years of Fordso in 2017. “The first Fordson was built in the US in 1917, and manufacture this side of the Atlantic started just two years later in 1919 in Ireland, before mov-
ing to Dagenham in 1923. Having the whole range on display in 2017 was quite a sight,” he says. Another favourite exhibit was an adaped Minneapolis-Moline tractor on display in 2004.
“
It’s the pinnacle of the year
“It wasn’t the original tractor, but two tractors joined together by the owner John Hayward of Bilsthorpe, to give it four-wheel drive and 100hp. The Minneapolis-Molines were only manufactured for a short time in the UK from 1946 to 1949. It was an unforgettable sight.”
Heritage shield The show also attracts competitors from further afield. They include the Reid family, who run a hydraulic engineering business in Arbroath, some 350 miles away. Keen enthusiasts, they have made the journey to Newark every year since the show started. In 2003, Neil Reid took a 1970 David Brown 880 Selectamatic and won ‘best David Brown’ and the ‘Concours 1965-78 Classic’. The tractor has returned many times over the years, winning the ‘Heritage Machinery Shield’ in 2007 and ‘best David Brown’ again in 2011 – and it’s making a triumphant return this year to feature in the 20th anniversary display.
Another vehicle returning after its first appearance at the very first show is an International Farmall H, owned by Dan Bartle. The tractor was bought by Joseph Camm Farms of Retford in 1948 and used as their main tractor for specialist row crop wor. After many years of service, the tractor was loaned out to the local agricultural museum and put on show to the public.
“After a few years, the museum unfortunately closed, leaving the tractor abandoned, says Mr Bartle. “The original owners contacted me and my uncle in 1998 to rescue the tractor, along with a Fordson N tractor which the farm owned too. “Both tractors were recovered and restoration began. My uncle restored the International

Farmall, replacing many parts and importing the correct replacement tyres from the USA. He took it to local rallies including the first Newark tractor show in 2003. I inherited it in 2022 and now have both tractors.”
Local rallies Another show stalwart contributing to the anniversary this year is James Hardstaff, a farmer from just north of Nottingham. Mr Hardstaff is also bringing a tractor that featured in the very first show. “It was a prize-winner then – a 1954 Fordson Major County Four Drive. I originally bought it from a scrap yard just south of the Dartford Tunnel back in 1998,” he says. “It took me four years to restore, then I showed it during the 2003 season, ending up at the first vintage tractor show at Newark. I’m pleased to be bringing it back this year for the 20th anniversary display. For show details, visit www.newarkvintagetractorshow.com.

MIDLANDS MACHINERY SHOW
Flagship machinery show launches new hub for 2023 • Road and transport safety at forefront • Trailers and brakes under scrutiny • Workships focus on practical advice
O
rganisers of this month’s Midlands Machinery Show hope a straightforward approach will improve road safety with the launch of a Transport and Towing Hub. Visitors to the Newark Showground on 8-9 November will have access to a comprehensive line-up of live demonstrations and workshops alongside a range of expert advice. These will run alongside regular exhibits. “At certain times of year, a combination of heavier agricultural traffic and public holiday traffic exacerbates the rate of incidents and accidents,” says show organiser Elizabeth Halsall.
Serious consequences “But even outside of these periods, misdemeanours like overloaded trailers or inadequate brakes can have serious consequences for people both sides of the farm gate. “Because of this, and following discussions with industry stakeholders we wanted to create a new feature that took a different and engaging approach to road safety.”
Across both days, LANTRA trainer and NAAC transport adviser Mike Sumner will lead four 30-minute workshops developed with machinery, operators, and regulations in mind. “There are lot of grey areas for machinery operators,” says Mr Sumner, who runs land-based training service One Ash. “In the workshops we’ll drill down into the areas that problems arise the most,” he adds..
Practical information “We don’t want this to be a reading of the rules, we want people to take away useful and practical information and how-to that will benefit their business.” Grey areas will be discussed, including what speed a tractor is built for and what it’s allowed to do – and how speed and weight will affect stopping distances. There will also be live demonstrations on securing loads and discussions around escorting wide loads, the nuances of young drivers, and how best to manage other equipment, including mounted attachments and trailed appliances.
About the show
“During harvest and busy periods everyone is keen to get on with the job and sometimes you’re really up against the clock with commitments, weather and other conditions. “It’s easy to rush or skip over the parts that seem to take up time – but that is when costly mistakes can happen. “Outside of the operators’ control is the behaviour of other road users,” adds Mr Sumner. “You’re going to be in a much better position to safely respond to their actions, and any law enforcement requests.
The new Valtra Q has better tech and more comfort Below: The new Ineos Quartermaster is set to be a big draw
Organised by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, the Midlands Machinery Show showcases the latest agricultural technology. As an agricultural charity, the charity’s objectives include promoting and organising the show, as well as supporting young people through its annual Education Awards and Midlands Agricultural Engineering Apprenticeship awards. Registration and parking are free but pre-registration is required for the Midlands Machinery Show, which runs from 8-9 November at the Newark Showground. NRoSO and BASIS points are also available for attendees. For details, visit www.midlandsmachineryshow.com
The message is clear: “Ultimately, the work needs to get done and we all want to get home safely.” Richard Western will be supporting the workshops with demonstrations of a safe lock bale clamping system by Angus Western, the company’s managing director, in the Technology ring. A hydraulic side-to-side roll over sheet fitted to a Suffolk trailer will be on their stand. “The demonstration will be a good opportunity for people to see how the safe lock bale system works under different configurations,” says Richard Western sales adviser Amy Taylor. “Both systems have been designed to improve not only the safety of transporting loads, but also the risk to operators by removing much of the manual element of securing loads. “It’s a great show and offers us and our customers the opportunity to speak in person which is always a great thing.” Essential Farm Machinery November 2023 13

MJP marks 18 years in biostimulant market
A
Lincolnshire company will celebrate 18 years of promoting biostimulants to UK farmers at this year’s Midlands Machinery Show. MJP Supplies, based near Spalding, has been using Algifol, a seaweed-based biostimulant, since 2005 and will be celebrating the milestone on stand 5 in JCH2 at this year’s show. After using the biostimulant for two years and seeing the benefits to potatoes, sugar beet, wheat and vining peas first hand, Marcus Palmer, owner of MJP Supplies, secured the UK distribution rights from German company Neomed Pharma in 2007. “I don’t really know where the time has gone,” says Mr Palmer. “It has passed so quickly. It’s very pleasing to be marking 18 years of promoting and selling Algifol to UK growers. I think the use of
biostimulants, a bit like my milestone, is coming of age. “Growers are facing very high fertiliser prices and looking at ways of reducing their costs. Over the last few years, there has been increased interest in using natural products to help improve crop establishment, disease resistance and overall quality and yields. “Both of these trends have pushed biostimulants into the limelight.”
Amino acids Neomed Pharma says the biostimulant is a natural nitrogen source due to the high presence of amino acids and peptides. This makes Algifol ideal for combined use with reduced amounts of nitrogen fertiliser. When used with a reduced amount of fertiliser, Algifol naturally improves the nitrogen use efficiency of the crop, producing

a better yield and reducing the use of costly fertilisers, says Mr Palmer. Derived from brown algae, which is dried and refined, Algifol is an entirely natural liquid boasting a wealth of trace elements, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, polyu-
ronides and growth-regulating plant hormones. Mr Palmer and the growers who apply Algifol have enjoyed numerous benefits, from improved crop establishment, greater resistance to extreme weather conditions like drought and heavy rain, and increased yields.
