Farming still the best job in the world in 2022

elcome to the 2022 edition of Farmer! – the yearbook and annual directory for growers and livestock producers across East Anglia and the Midlands. For many farmers, 2022 cannot come soon enough. It has been a challenging year – both in terms of weather and commodity markets. Both have been increasingly volatile and unpredictable – the past 12 months have been no exception. Producers have had to grapple with other challenges too. Problems in other parts of the supply chain, including the labour shortage which has engulfed the meat processing and haulage sectors, have had a knock-on effect on farms. True, prices across some farm sectors have been buoyant, although there have been some notable exceptions, including the crisis which hit the pig sector during the last quarter of 2021. But rising input costs have largely eroded any upside. Key inputs such as glyphosate have suffered shortages. The fertiliser market too has been in turmoil. With supplies remaining tight, demand from farmers for both products has seen prices pushed higher and higher. At the same time, the basic payment scheme (BPS) is being phased out. The BPS accounts for a substantial amount of income on many farms – with the result that profitability will fall as it is withdrawn. As always, it remains vital to ensure that farm businesses are resilient. Failure to do so will leave arable and livestock enterprises vulnerable to sudden and unpredictable changes – including market failure.

But the sector faces some huge opportunities, not just challenges. These include the fledgling market for carbon sequestration – a market that is set to grow hugely over the coming years as the need to mitigate climate change becomes more urgent. Other opportunities this year include the launch of the government’s Sustainable Farming Incentive. Currently being piloted, this is the entry-level tier of the forthcoming Environmental Land Management Scheme. It won’t appeal to everyone, but for many farmers it will provide a useful source of income for undertaking some relatively simple environmental improvements. A series of productivity grants are expected to be made available too. They will offer farmers the opportunity to invest in their businesses – by subsidising the cost of machinery and other equipment, provided that is has a demonstrable benefit in terms of production. Finally, 2022 could also be the year that we are able to put the coronavirus pandemic behind us. Although it is clear that we will have to live with the virus for some time to come, life is gradually returning to normal This includes much-missed farm events, including farm visits, agricultural shows and conferences. It will hopefully be a year to catch up with people face-to-face rather than gazing into a screen for hours on end. As always, we wish our readers all the best for 2022. And when things are going wrong, try to remember that farming is still the best job in the work – and feeding the world is a vital occupation.

OXFORD FARMING CONFERENCE

How to make your farm business more resilient

ays to make your farm business more resilient will be the theme of the 2022 Oxford Farming Conference, which runs from 5-7 January. The conference returns to Oxford for the first time since 2020 after an enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic. Special measures mean delegates have the option of attending either in person or online. “Social events and networking are an important aspect of the conference – and one that we have all missed – so returning to a physical event has been firmly in our plans,” says conference co-chair Barbara Bray. “We have selected speakers and session topics that will reflect on our theme ‘Routes to Resilience’ and – with the a hybrid option on offer – you can join a select series of sessions digitally from the comfort of your home.”

Big questions The post-CAP, post-Brexit and postpandemic era means resilience will be key to farming’s success – and the conference will hear from domestic and global speakers to tackle the big questions facing the industry. Farmer-led solutions The first full day of the conference on Thursday 6 January will combine trade, policy, science, research and farmer-led solutions. It is often a key moment in the agricultural diary as new annoucements are made impacting future legislation. The evening of the first day will include the Oxford Farming Debate – which this year will discuss the motion “This house believes food production in the UK should not be subsidised.” The second full day on Friday 7 January will examine the concept of “family” in agriculture around the world, next steps for the National Food Strategy and the launch of the Oxford Farming Conference report on “Natural Capital – the battle for control”. Sustainable Farming Incentive

Will it work for you? Lewis Butlin of Agrovista Rural Consultancy provides a timely overview of the new Sustainable Farming Incentive.

efra’s new farm support scheme, Environmental Land Management (ELM), was due to start towards the end of 2024, marking a pivotal change in the way farmers and land managers would be supported by providing “public money for public goods”. Once it became clear that the current support system, BPS, was actually going to be phased out completely by the end of 2027, and would be subject to severe cuts from 2021 onwards, there was increasing pressure from the industry in 2020 to provide an earlier start to ELM. In November 2020, Defra secretary George Eustice announced the initial details of the first tier of ELM as the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). Further details were announced in February 2021, followed by invitations to farmers and landowners to enter a pilot scheme for SFI that would start in autumn 2021. Under this pilot, only land that was not within an environmental scheme could be entered. Defra was hoping for around 10,000 expressions of interest from which they could choose 1,200 participants to provide a sufficient spread of both geography and farming systems to obtain a good overview of how the SFI would work in all situations. However, only 2,168 expressions of interest were received, so all respondents were invited to submit an application. 8 Farmer! 2022 Directory

An evolving scheme, the SFI has initially been set with eight standards, with up to three levels of engagement within each. These are: • Arable and horticultural land and soils standards • Improved grassland and soils standards • Low and no input grassland standard • Hedgerow standard • On farm woodland standard • Waterbody buffering standard. Further standards will be introduced to cover areas such as animal welfare at a later date. The SFI is designed to be a farmerfriendly scheme that can easily be applied for online through the RPA portal. The actual application process is in fact fairly simple to follow through and will be very familiar to those used to using the RPA portal for BPS and Countryside Stewardship applications and claims.

Best combination Understanding what is being signed up to and the implications of doing so is a different story. Although some of the requirements are very simple to understand and the recording of the activities will be fairly easy, there are elements of the options that will require some considerable thought to work out the best combination of options to achieve the required results that also fit in with the farming situation. Some options have plenty of choices to enable applicants to pick those that fit best within their farms and farming systems. A combination of grass buffer strips, field corners, pollen and nectar, wild bird seed and herbal leys will all be familiar options to those that have been a part of stewardship schemes past and present.

Lewis Butlin Naturally, soil health is a big part of the Arable and Grassland Soils Standards. Rewarding farmers for looking at, and recording the health of, their soils will bring about consequential benefits of management that will aid carbon sequestration. Improved productivity through investment in precision farming techniques and equipment could be attractive to those that have not yet ventured down that route. However, for smaller farm businesses, some options may limit the level of engagement to ensure they are not committing to big investments that cannot be justified on their size of unit or that require them to engage with a contractor or neighbour to carry out field operations.

Feedback As with all pilot schemes it is envisaged that, depending on feedback, the final scheme set to be launched in the spring of 2022 will look different to what we are currently seeing. The SFI has the potential to take Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAECs) to the next level, implementing positive management of the environment,

that will benefit not just poorer areas but the whole farm. This will increase productivity, reduce artificial inputs by selective precision applications and improve care of the soil. Management of trees, hedges and watercourses will bring about their own benefits of providing habitats and preventing diffuse pollution. That said, the SFI is not the only initiative and others are well worth considering. A well-constructed CS scheme can buffer some of the diminishing BPS payments until 2027/2028 and there will also be numerous opportunities from the commercial sector, including water companies, and by trading biodiversity. Why ‘placemaking’ has key role in farm diversification Turning your farm into a desirable location can generate valuable additional income.

armers considering diversification should consider how “placemaking” could help to increase the number and quality of their customers. “Placemaking is relatively new in the context of the rural estate sector, but we believe it has huge potential as estates look to develop new customer-facing enterprises,” says Ed Mansel Lewis, head of rural ambitions at Strutt & Parker. At its simplest, placemaking is about creating a desirable location – where people want to live, work and spend their leisure time and money. In other words, it’s about creating innovative places that generate economic growth. Traditionally, many farm and estate

owners approach diversification on a oneoff building or project basis – rather than stepping back and considering how to create a richer customer experience, says Mr Mansel Lewis. “Placemaking can be a powerful way to approach diversification planning, as landowners seek to reimagine the places they own and occupy in response to falls in direct support payments.” Changes in farm policy and support are prompting a wave of entrepreneurial landowners reinvent their business models. Many are keen to develop more commercial activities – including new businesses – to reduce their reliance on traditional income streams. “Rural placemaking is a process which can help an estate produce a commercial masterplan which will give any new business activity the best possible chance of success,” says Mr Mansel Lewis.

For any new business, the starting point should be understanding who the customers are and what they want. Decisions about what services to provide and where to place them should be guided by careful customer data analysis.

Places thrive when people have a range of reasons (10+) to be there. There is no magic in the number 10, rather it is a reminder that more is better. Good placemaking creates a ‘destination’, giving visitors more reasons to visit for longer.

The anchor

Create clusters of like-minded businesses Farms and estates sometimes end up letting space to a collection of businesses from different sectors. But clustering complementary businesses together gives a location more identity – and makes it more attractive as a location.

Identify the key reason customers would choose to visit a place. For farms and estates, the anchor is likely to be the opportunity to spend time in the countryside, connecting with nature and enjoying the views.

Placemaking is frequently discussed in relation to urban planning, but the principles are equally applicable in the countryside. It is a hands-on approach to designing and improving places, often drawing on the inspiration of the people who will use it. Crucially, it a concept that has a multiplying effect on some established financial metrics which anyone running a customer-facing diversification will want to monitor anyway - the Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) and Average Basket Value (ABV). The former is calculated by dividing the costs of marketing and sales by the number of customers acquired, the latter is the total value of goods sold, divided by the number of transactions to give an average spend per transaction A lower CAC is better, as it means

This simple understanding is at the heart of placemaking.” Strutt & Parker recently published a report, called The Future of the Esate, which examines the role of placemaking in creating successful diversified businesses. Study reveals well-being benefits of farmed landscape

eople who visited the countryside during the coronavirus pandemic say they better appreciate the role played by farmers in looking after the iconic British landscape. Some 87% of people who visit the British countryside said doing so had improved their well-being. The survey, conducted by Censuswide for the NFU, canvassed the views of more than 2,000 people. Nearly half (47%) said they valued the British countryside and farmland more since the pandemic began. Of those, 84% agreed their visits had made them appreciate the role played by farmers in creating the rural landscape.

It’s fantastic to see that those who actually live furthest away from rural areas have directly benefitted in this way from the work of farmers. “More people than ever before have been visiting farmland over the past year and the appreciation we’ve seen from the public for the respite the farmed landscape has provided has been fantastic to see.

Why thieves using e-scooters are targeting farms to steal £3,000 quad bikes – and what farmers can do to prevent it by Kate Tudor, Northumbria University

arm vehicles have long been considered an easy target for thieves because of poor security measures, such as universal keys that can be used to start any tractor and the failure to use immobilisers. But security is now starting to be upgraded. Some tractors and quad bikes are now being made with a new type of chipped key to make them more secure; however, many vehicles still lag conspicuously behind the modern security standards, leaving farmers unprotected against theft. Meanwhile, criminals are also embracing new technology. They are increasingly using e-scooters and e-bikes as they are faster than ordinary bikes and quieter than cars to scope out potential farms as targets. Offenders also conduct their search for machinery to steal by trawling social media 14 Farmer! 2022 Directory

and online publications. It is also increasingly common for criminals to use signal jammers to stop trackers working as thieves escape with a stolen quad bike. Figures published by insurance company NFU Mutual show the extent of agricultural theft in the UK. The most recent report shows that, after significant increases in both 2018 and 2019, 2020 saw reductions in agricultural vehicle theft.

Downward trend These figures may not indicate a long-term downward trend as the pandemic reduced the frequency and speed of both national and global transport networks that criminals depend on to move stolen goods. And they may fall in line with a drop in recorded crime during the pandemic, where crime overall fell by 10% and theft by 20%.

Thieves steal quad bikes and all-terrain vehicles because of their high secondhand value (around £3,000-£4,000) and because they are easy to transport, but the latest target is expensive GPS systems that are often fitted to the top of tractors to improve accuracy and efficiency. The ease with which GPS units can be concealed and transported has helped this form of crime remain viable during the pandemic.

Families left vulnerable Machinery theft often results in significant interruptions to farming as well as financial losses, and sometimes theft is also accompanied by intimidation and violence. Farmers and their families can also be left struggling with both the fear of crime and the experience of being a victim of crime leaving them feeling vulnerable and afraid of

networks for the theft, transport and sale of machinery across large geographical areas. Farmers are increasingly uncertain of how best to protect themselves without having to constantly invest in expensive security as a technological arms race takes place between them and criminals. The new ways criminals are targeting rural communities mean farm vehicle manufacturers must start to include modern security measures in their standard design for tractors and quad bikes as they do with cars – instead of leaving them to be purchased as expensive extras that farmers cannot afford. In the meantime, my research suggests that using simple, cheap measures such as community WhatsApp groups police officers are able to quickly share information with farmers to help them improve security, warning them of any vulnerabilities, as well as helping farmers feel less isolated. BREXIT

Brexit has left farmers in fear for their futures by Peter Gittins

ou either love him or hate him, but Jeremy Clarkson’s documentary series about trying to get to grips with sheep rearing, tractor driving and running a farm shop at Diddly Squat Farm has certainly found an audience. As someone who lives and works on the family farm and experiences the harsh realities in the show, I have found it enjoyable and relatable. Clarkson’s farming efforts were rewarded with a mere £142 in his first year. He did break the bank with a Lamborghini tractor and his crop yield was hit by unusually severe weather, but it gives a sense of how hard it is making money in farming. Our 250-acre upland farm in west Yorkshire is an average size for this part of England. In meadows and rough grazing land, we run around 60 head of suckler beef cattle and about 100 breeding ewes.

Business strategies The farm is run by my 68-year-old father, my younger brother and myself. They do the bulk of the work with the animals and I oversee administrative duties while studying for a PhD in rural entrepreneurship, focusing on the challenges farmers in the beef and sheep sector face and the types of business strategies they are using to respond. At the farm we have been busy as always, making hay when the sun shines, shearing the sheep, calving and spending considerable amounts of time form-filling and complying with government red tape. We have been incredibly lucky to isolate ourselves in the stunning countryside during the COVID lockdowns. But like many farmers, we’re very worried about how 16 Farmer! 2022 Directory

Brexit is affecting our industry. UK farmers are transitioning away from the EU common agricultural policy (CAP) as the UK’s basic payment scheme is phased out over the next seven years, affecting thousands of claiming farms. From 2022, some farmers will be able to apply for a pilot scheme for new grants known as environmental land management schemes (ELMs), which will then be introduced properly in 2024. It’s not clear how comparable the money will be. Despite the long phase-out period, the transition is seriously affecting farmers already. Though it varies with farm size, farmers will receive roughly 10% less from the current scheme in 2021 than the year before, and almost half of basic-scheme payments will be gone by 2024. This is frightening when you realise that EU subsidies can comprise up to 90% of farmers’ annual business income. Our farm relies on subsidies for around 75% of our income, with the rest coming from selling livestock and property letting. Upland farmers in 2020 received an average annual income of just £22,800 – nearly £10,000 below what the median earnings in the UK. Some farmers such as those in dairy or poultry can earn three or four times more, but everyone will be worried about the future.

Environmental schemes The ELMs will reward farmers for being environmentally sustainable with their land, through sustainable farming and helping with the recovery of local wildlife and natural landscapes. Flach & Le-Roy Ltd – Crop/Woodchip Drying Systems Founded in 1993 by Richard Flach and Owen Le-Roy, together the partners have over 50 years experience in the crop drying and storage business. Their speciality is high quality drive-on flooring and box-store ventilation and conditioning systems. Based on the near-ambient drying method Flach & Le-Roy's drive-on floor drying system is fully automated, having fans and burners controlled via humidity sensors in the air duct and fan house. The drying rate for cereals is up to half a percent every 24 hours and the fans deliver air through the crop at between 20 and 24 feet per minute depending on stack height. Offloading the grain trailer into the store is time and labour saving and the crop needs no stirring. More recent application of the drying-floor system is the preparation of woodchip for biomass heating systems. BREXIT >> coming instead? At our farm, we receive payments under various existing agricultural environmental schemes to encourage biodiversity. We are paid to create ponds and nesting areas for wildlife, for example, and for cutting our grass later in the year for haymaking. If ELMs is anything like these schemes, it is hard to be optimistic. They have provided us with income for land from which it would otherwise be difficult to profit, but not without problems. For instance, an issue with our satellite mapping dating back ten years led to a deduction of £8,000 from our payment one year, which was already delayed by eight months. As Jeremy Clarkson recently said, the UK government is “unnecessarily bureaucratic” with farmers. Having seen the stress of such situations first-hand, not to mention the cuts to subsidies and isolation in farming, I don’t find it surprising many farmers suffer from mental health issues. A recent survey of 450 farmers under the age of 40 found that 88% viewed mental health as the biggest challenge facing farmers – something that is coming up in my research too. Other research has confirmed high stress and suicide rates. COVID, in my view, amplified these difficulties. During lockdown, when many people visited rural areas for their daily permitted walk, farmers grew worried that the disease could spread to their communities. This makes sense when you reflect that the average age of a farmer is 59, and an estimated 90% of farms are owned and occupied by a single person. The poor broadband on many farms also made lockdown harder. When rural social events like Open Farm Sunday went online, many farmers couldn’t take part, which exacerbated their isolation.

The need for entrants Our farm has largely only survived in recent years because the current system favours us. The basic payments scheme has benefited farmers like ourselves who own land, and our farm has fit well with the existing environmental schemes – and hopefully will continue to do so under the ELMs. It also helps that the farm had few liabilities when my father inherited it. But for many other farming enterprises, the transition to ELMs may see them fail. Many farmers are trying to prepare by diversifying into everything from tourism to wind energy. Others are turning to careers elsewhere. I’m actually one of them, aiming to move into shaping agricultural policy after completing my doctoral research. The government is going to offer struggling farmers a “lump-sum” exit scheme. Some may take it up, but it will depend on how much they are offered. A decent offer is nothing less than they deserve, and might also free up the land so that new entrants with entrepreneurial ambitions can try their hand. A new generation of younger farmers might be able to make more money through direct selling via a shop and creating brands around their farm products – particularly if broadband connectivity were improved so that they could build online businesses. But given the enormous financial challenges, the mental health difficulties farmers face and other tough issues such as flooding, it’s difficult to know if new entrants will come. All in all, the future of UK farming is more uncertain than I have ever seen it.

New format for 2022 Beef Expo

he NBA Beef Expo event will return to the farming calendar with a new format on 28 May at Darlington Farmers Auction Market. Bringing together the best in British commercial and pedigree cattle, the National Beef Association show will include classes for everyone involved in the industry, said NBA chief executive Neil Shand. “The NBA is delighted to be able to hold its flagship event at the new auction, business and conference centre, and we’re delighted to be face-to-face with key industry organisations, businesses, producers and NBA members after a two-year hiatus.” The event will include an opening ceremony for the state-of-the-art auction centre at Humbleton Park.It will host the

National Commercial Cattle Show and the South Devon Performance Championships. Attracting some 5,000 beef farmers, the 2022 event will also explore the importance of the livestock marts both for trade and for wider rural communities. The system operates at 2-4 bar pressure using a 4mm-6mm Size Sprinkler Nozzle this gives an output of 0.8 to 1.1 m3 per hour per sprinkler with a diameter of 20-24mt therefore applying 3-4mm per hour. The system is designed for clean or dirty water with large solids being removed by the WrootWater Super Simple Filter, removing all particles above 2mm, it is also self-cleaning so relatively low maintenance and trouble free.

This is a modular sprinkler system used mainly for irrigating grass as it is easy to manage and is economical with very few moving parts so there is very little to go wrong. We think we now have the winning system that is both economical and easy to use.

We are now also offering the larger K-line Pods with Sprinklers to handle larger solids as these come with nozzles up to 12mm in diameter.
