U3A hosts engaging talk on Halesworth Cemetery history and preservation

Pristine, pre-loved clothes and accessories The Hawk, Bridge Street, Halesworth, IP19 8AD 07785 570750 Open: Wed/Thurs/Fri (10am-4pm) Sat (10am-2pm)

In January, Halesworth U3A welcomed professional archaeologist and historian Kevin Wooldridge who gave a fascinating presentation on Halesworth Cemetery. There was a full house at The Cut to learn why the cemetery was created (not much room in the churchyard) and how non-conformists and people of other and of no faith were accommodated.

We heard about some of the notable "residents" and also about the current project with Halesworth Museum to update Adnam's award-winning Rye Malt Whisky and digitise local burial records. The aim of the project is to conserve the records and make them available for family history research. Our next talk ('The Enigma of Sutton Hoo') is on March 19th, read more about this on our Adnams are celebrating is grown by Adnams' Chairman spice on the nose, with vanilla, another global win, after its Jonathan Adnams, at his farm in citrus and buttery pastry. big lunches at the Golf Club. One in July and one in December. Husbands, wives, partners etc are invited to these lunches, and they are most enjoyable events. We also run occasional trips and social events. If you'd like further information, or are interested in joining us, please call: 01986 835859, or email: woodjohn3556@gmail.com

Do Scouts still meet in Halesworth? Over the years I have been associated with the Halesworth Scout Group, I have often been asked if Scouts still meet in Halesworth... Well, they do meet and have been doing so for many years. It is with great pleasure that the Scout Group has achieved its largest number of young members for many years. There are 58 young people in the group, in the Beaver Scout Colony, the Cub Scout Pack and the Scout Troop. They are supported by 11 leaders and five other helpers. What Scouts get up to is often a mystery to those not involved in Scouting. As well as camping, hiking (day and night), outdoor and indoor cooking, there are a vast range of other activities for all ages. Each Scout Group has its own specialities, in Halesworth we offer archery, air rifle shooting and axe throwing. Most of these activities are open to all members from six to adult. Adult leadership is all important to Scouting, as with other youth organisations. We are currently looking for additional leaders in the Cub Scout Pack and Beaver Scout Colony. Three of our leaders will be retiring after (I dare not say how many) years of service to the town. Adults can help in many ways, from parents occasionally helping in meeting, to uniformed leaders who organise and run the meetings and activities. If you'd

like to know how you could help, do get in touch. I have retired from Scouting after nearly 60 years and Scouting has opened up so many new experiences for me, experiences I would not have had without Scouting, so give it a try. There is a relatively new section starting in Scouting, Squirrels, Halesworth want to offer this provision to our town. Squirrels covers the age range of four to six years of age. Halesworth will not be the first, there are a number of Squirrel Drays running in north east Suffolk for us to gain knowledge from. We have had a number of enquiries for this section and we are sure that there is a great demand. There are the children, the facilities and the programme, what we need is leadership. For this age range we need a larger ratio of leaders than other sections. There are some interested adults who would like to become leaders, but we cannot start the section without a confirmed leadership. If you'd like to help start our Squirrel Dray, do come forward. You will receive training and help from experienced leaders. Do volunteer to help start this section, One of the aims of Scouting is to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it's most needed, what better reason to join us in this new venture. For more information, email: brian@iminter.co.uk or call: 07715 679711. Brian Howard

WinterLight! is back on the Green for half term Remember the 15 foot caterpillar winding its way to the Green? The enormous owl shaking its head on a 30 foot pole? The ghost on a bicycle? If you do, you know you can expect something puzzling in the daylight and sparkling effects after dark. If you don't, now is your chance to share the Green's WinterLight! experience for the first time. For the whole of half term, February 17th to 25th, the WinterLight! Trail and Quiz will be on the Green. Find details through the QR code which is here and on the posters around town and along the Track. There will also be some printed Trailand-Quiz forms in the Library and in Hetty's. But don't stop there! At the end of half-term on February 25th, there's a brand new Millennium Green film to see made by Johnny Thomson. You'll see into corners of the Green you might not have visited yet and certainly not from the air, and you'll see how the Green has changed over 25 years. Help to decide what happens in the next 25 years! The Green's film will be having its world premier at The Cut around 2:20pm but if you get there at 2pm you'll also very much enjoy "Caught in the Act" by Meg Amsden starring local otters. And if you spend the day at The Cut, you'll see a

whole batch of interesting and beautiful films in the Big Green Film Day run by Halesworth Area Sustainable Hub. What's special about this year for the Millennium Green? It's 25 years since the Green was set up in 1999 with the help of money from government, Europe, local businesses, local groups and individuals. The town is so lucky to have this extraordinary, huge, open space, with free public access to every part, and bursting with wildlife, some of it rare and all of it special. The Green has an active and cheerful volunteer body helping with work-parties, planning events, keeping on top of the finance, running the special projects that crop up. Come and be part of it all.

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - March 2024 - 7 204159

The above photo of the presentation was taken by Shedder Brian Griffiths on his 40 year old camera, still taking great pictures after all that time.

Halesworth Men's Shed gratefully receive donation from Co-op Community Fund Natalie Townley (Director) and Wendy Mitchell (Funeral Service Arranger) were the representatives from Woolnough Funeral Care presenting the Halesworth Men's Shed with £250 from the Co-op Community Fund, on behalf of Co-op Funeralcare, Halesworth. The donation will help towards the purchase of materials for items, to be constructed by Halesworth Men's Shed, in the community garden being planned

by the Friends of Halesworth Community Health and Care. This charity was previously the League of Friends of Patrick Stead Hospital, which will now be operating from its new facilities on the site of the closed Halesworth Methodist Church. The community garden is being designed for medically challenged attendees with easy access to maintaining its flora and the provision of convenient height planters for use by wheelchair assisted users.

We continue to find many varied and challenging activities and items being requested of our members, that we find ourselves making and repairing. In the past few months we have made stirrups for a rocking horse, theatre sound system trolleys, various furniture challenges, electrical and garden tool repairs. We are planning to have a one-off stall at the monthly produce market in May. Our website has been updated and now includes a link (request for jobs) application

form for people to use: www. halesworthshed.org.uk. So please have a look at the website or better still, come along and see us. We're situated on Norwich road just behind Chinny's, you'll see our sign when you pull in. Please park behind Chinny's as their car park is private. We are open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm and Saturdays from 10am to 12pm. You can call us on: 01986 835905 or email: shedhalesworth@gmail.com.

March 2024 - BecBun 8 & Hales 12 Community News

Bramfield, Ringsfield and Brampton Primary Schools activities At Ringsfield, Bramfield and Brampton Primary Schools, the children have been finding out about the celebration 'Chinese New Year' and discovered that it is the year of the dragon. We learnt that it is also known as the Lunar New Year and the exact date changes each year as it is linked to the start of a new moon. The celebration is 15 days long. Families and friends get together to eat lots of yummy food, enjoy fireworks, and wear special clothes to mark the occasion. Lots of red is worn because it is seen as a lucky colour. At Ringsfield, the Reception and Nursery children did lots of craft activities, cooked and tasted some egg fried rice and made a dragon for dancing. The children also enjoyed role playing together as a family, celebrating Chinese New Year in their home.

At Bramfield, we created a giant lion-head puppet and took it in turns to lead a procession, copying the traditional lion dance performers we had seen. We shimmied and bobbed our way around the school hall while our friends accompanied us with drums and symbols. At Brampton, we made some lucky red envelopes and the children put a coin in to share with their family. We also made a dragon and created our own dragon dance outside on the playground.

Bungay Primary School A group of our wonderful children took part in the most amazing opportunity to sing in the 'Young Voices' choir at the O2 Arena in London this month. Our group, as part of the wider ASSET Education choir, joined others and brought together a choir of up to 9,000 other school-aged children! From the dedication to practising to the journey that started shortly after 7am and took until past midnight, we couldn't be any more proud of everyone that took part!

Southwold Rugby Club update It has been a great first half of the season with lots of rugby being played on Southwold Common across all age groups. The first team are currently sitting in 4th position in their league (London and SE Division Counties 1 Eastern), the team are developing well under Head Coach, Mark Grigg producing

some great team performances over the last few games. The second team have a mixture of youth and experience and despite their league being reorganised resulting in very few fixtures, they have managed to secure several friendly games and are developing well as a team.

The ladies team have a lot of new players who are just starting to find their feet and this bodes well for the future. In their league they are sitting just below middle of the table having won three and lost five. The junior sections have enjoyed some great rugby with the youth and colts groups

starting their Eastern Counties Cup competitions and the minis looking forward to the up coming festivals. If anyone would like to get involved as a player, supporter or volunteer then please look at the Southwold Rugby Club website and contact us. www.southwoldrugby.club

Halesworth Pumas Cricket Club looking for new recruits! For nearly 20 years, the pumas have played pub-level cricket against pretty much all corners. Ranging from local "rivals" at Saxmundham, Topcroft, Gillingham, Yoxford and many more to touring sides such as Reigate, Cambridge and London Rams. Pub cricket is a strictly friendly, strictly fun exercise, and although many league teams do represent in the format, there is no title to

be won and no pressure on results. The only real pressure is making sure you get your hands on a sandwich at the pub afterwards! Pumas welcome all comers, at all levels of ability, as long as you can play with a smile on your face and are willing to join in the good natured nonsense, (the jacket of shame gets passed around for misfields and silly things) you are welcome. The games generally take place

on midweek evenings with home games taking place at Rumburgh (and post match at the Rumburgh Buck). The club welcomes new members and you can make contact, easiest via Facebook, or email: halesworthpumascc@ hotmail.co.uk. This year, we're seeking some keen and willing recruits to help with pitch maintenance as our grounds team are in need of support. We look forward to seeing you!

Wenhaston Bowls Club's growing trophy cabinet! As previously reported, Wenhaston Bowls Club was very successful over the 2023 season, with even more trophies being added to our growing collection. This comes after Chris Peck led the team to victory in the Lowestoft and District league for the sixth year in a row, with wife, Elaine Peck leading the Wenhaston team to victory in the Halesworth three-wood league for the second year in a row. Recently elected Chairperson, Jen Daly said "Everyone at our

club loves playing the sport and although winning isn't everything it's great to have a cabinet that shows the hard work our captains and players put in. We are all raring to go and waiting for the season to kick off later in the spring to see what 2024 has in store, hopefully we will end the season needing a bigger cabinet and some more shelves." If you'd like to join our friendly club, please email our Secretary, Jake Moyes on: jake.moyes9@gmail.com

pollen for bees and hoverflies. It's also perfect for including in a vegetable garden as a companion plant (especially for vulnerable varieties such as broad beans) because hoverflies love eating aphids. The bright orange flowers complement the rich variety of greens found in leafy crops and salad vegetables, but California poppies also come in pink, white and yellow. In addition to stocking your garden with wildlife friendly plants, other top jobs for gardeners this month include: • Pruning bush and climbing roses: Remember to cut out dead or diseased stems and spindly or crossing stems, keep cuts to 5mm above a bud sloping downwards and cut to an outward-facing bud. • Planting shallots, onion sets and early potatoes: Onions are such a versatile vegetable - they feature in so many recipes, and growing your own means you'll always have them to hand. • Planting summer-flowering bulbs: Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers or borders, especially daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow.

This is the month for sowing seeds and getting the garden ready for the summer months ahead. It's also the perfect time for a mini makeover project and creating a sunny wildflower border is something that even the most novice gardener can take on. Wildflowers are easy to grow and a sunny border will attract pollinators and birds. The smallest area can look attractive and benefit wildlife, so don't overlook that tiny patch of lawn that is never used, or pots on the patio that could do with a new look. Keep in mind that wildflowers do not like too rich a compost they prefer poor soil with few nutrients. Make sure you read the seed packet to find out how much seed to sow for the size of your plot and, as wild flower seeds can be on the small side, mix them with a bit of sand as it makes distributing them easier. Once scattered water gently and keep the soil damp until the seeds have germinated. In the mix of wildflower seeds you select, think about including some poppy seeds. The California poppy is widely grown by wildlife gardeners for its ability to provide

TO ADVERTISE YOUR SERVICE ON OUR MOTORS PAGE,

Many readers will know that Halesworth Area Community Transport (HACT) buses are supported largely by volunteers. Right now, we are very keen to hear from anyone who can help us to carry out weekly checks on our buses to make sure oil, screenwash and Adblue levels are correct so the buses can continue to run. This work is normally done on a Thursday, but we can

be flexible about this. There are three buses to check over and the whole process takes about an hour and a half and takes place at Halesworth Railway station car park. If you're interested and can spare the time, we'd be really grateful. All training would be given. To find out more, please call the office: 01986 875900 or email: office@hactbus.co.uk. Martlesham Wilds

LIMITED

Tel: 01502 471900

The February meeting of our local Blyth Valley and Southwold Wildlife group welcomed Michael Strand, from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, to talk about Martlesham Wilds. This is an exciting new reserve on the outskirts of Woodbridge, bordering Martlesham Creek and the River Deben. There was tremendous support from the community to raise the £1million needed to complete the purchase of the land, formally an organic farm which already had a wonderful variety of habitat. There is ancient woodland, unimproved pastures, mudflats, and saltmarsh. Although the re-wilding will happen over time in a natural way, there are several initiatives to start the process. Both the restoration and creation of new ponds will provide essential fresh water across the site for a wide variety of wildlife. Ancient oaks and wild grasslands will provide plentiful seeds. Certain areas will be unobtrusively fenced, to allow grazing to take place, an essential component in diversifying the ground cover,

and allowing messy scrub areas to develop. Shallow scrapes and meandering 'foot drains' have been excavated on the grazing marshes, providing an ideal habitat for migratory birds. Local community groups are involved in the baseline monitoring of the flora and fauna. There are already healthy groups of voles, badgers, otters, snakes, and lizards, and it is hoped that over the next few years, species such as the nightingale, turtle dove, skylark and yellowhammer will become more abundant. We are fortunate to have such an exciting new venture nearby, and Michael's detailed knowledge and enthusiasm left us wanting to visit the Wilds, and enjoy the transformation of this beautiful reserve over the years to come. Please note that our next meeting is at Wenhaston Village Hall, IP19 9EQ, on March 14th at 7:30pm, when Rupert Mansfield will talk about the Lowestoft Kittiwake Project. Admission is £4, to include refreshments, under 25's free. All are welcome.

join us as drivers. We have had women drivers in the past but for some reason, we haven't had any regular women drivers of the Hoppa for some time. All volunteers undergo a short training session with a qualified instructor to prepare them for carrying the public.

Finally, we'd like to say a big thank you to the Halesworth Golf Club Seniors for recently raising a wonderful £372 for HACT at one of their recent events. Over the years, the Seniors have been regular, generous donors to the Hoppa and we are very grateful to them for their ongoing support.

Halesworth Volunteers An update from Halesworth Volunteers. Time to Play: Halesworth Volunteers are delighted to announce the launch of our new monthly 100 Club. From April, you will have the chance to win a cash prize, just by entering our monthly draw. To find out more, please contact the office on 01986 985600 or email: emma.healey@halesworthvc. co.uk to find out more. Community Car Service: Our volunteer drivers are doing an amazing job getting people who can no longer travel independently to their allimportant appointments. We're getting people to hospitals, to the doctors as well as to places like the Pear Tree Centre. If you need some help getting out and about, do please give us a call. But please remember, we do need at least two working day's notice to get you booked in on our system. Lunches & Afternoon Teas: Our next Community Soup and Sandwich Lunch will be on the last Wednesday of the month at St. Mary's Church. We can help with transport (thanks

to the Hoppa) so do let us know if you'd like to book a place on the bus. Shopping: Do you or someone you know need help with shopping? Our team are here to help you get the food you need and we can collect your prescriptions too. Just ring the office if you need some help. Community Larder: The Halesworth Community Larder is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 11:30am. We've been very busy recently, but the Larder remains a lovely, friendly space but please bear with us if there's a bit of a queue. Events: Don't miss our lovely events! The Wellbeing lunch takes place on the first Tuesday of the month at Chinny's. Don't forget Nigel's brilliant quiz on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the White Hart. There will be a special tea party at the Pear Tree Centre in March, so if you know any older people who would enjoy a lovely afternoon tea, please give the office a call on 01986 875600.

Energy Group: Homes that don't waste heat

In 2014, Wayne released his book entitled 'Spilling the Popcorn', detailing the fascinating history of Suffolk's oldest cinema and his various exploits. Final few copies of the book are available from the Film Theatre Box Office. Wayne also provides talks on the history of the venue, to help raise funds for the Friends. With a total of 37 years in the cinema business and with the Film Theatre celebrating its 110th anniversary in October, Wayne still thrives on offering a varied programme of entertainment and a bespoke service to the Film Theatre's loyal supporters, or as Wayne calls them, discerning cinema-goers! Wayne will be celebrating his 30 years as Manager, with a special screening of one of his favourite films, 'Little Voice', at the Film Theatre on April 7th at 6pm, with proceeds donated to the Film Theatre Friends. The film stars Jane Horrocks, Michael Caine, Brenda Blethyn, Jim Broadbent and Ewan McGregor and based on Jim Cartwright's 1992 play 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice'. Tickets can be booked, by contacting the Box Office on 01728 830549, or online at: www.leistonfilmtheatre.co.uk

kiosk. Peter's era as manager would see the gradual decline of cinema attendances and the serious threat of Leiston losing its cinema. Thankfully, the venue was saved from closure in 1976, when Leiston Town Council purchased the venue, with Peter being retained as their Manager. Peter retired in 1994 and Wayne then embarked on his Film Theatre journey, which has seen the venue undergo an extensive programme of major refurbishments throughout the building, enabling a remarkable renewal in popularity, with the venue celebrating its centenary in 2014. With the formation of the Film Theatre Support Club (now known as the Friends of Leiston Film Theatre) in 1992, Wayne has been able to call upon their incredible fundraising achievements to continue enhancing the experience of both films and live shows, which includes the hugely popular annual Pantomime every January. One of the biggest challenges that Wayne has overseen, was the switch to digital cinema in 2010, which served a stark dilemma for cinemas to transfer to digital, or close.

A cinema manager will be celebrating 30 years as the boss at one of the counties treasured independent cinemas in April. Wayne Burns joined the iconic Leiston Film Theatre in 1992 as the Assistant Manager and took over as Manager on April 1st, 1994, having worked previously as a Projectionist at Aldeburgh Cinema. In reaching this milestone, Wayne becomes the third person to have served the venue as manager for 30 continuous years. William Hammick was the Leiston Picture House manager between 1915 and 1945, through two World Wars and would have witnessed the infancy of cinema, at a time when films were projected on to a whitewashed wall and accompanied by a pianist. As the industry developed, Hammick would have seen all the major advancements to follow, including the arrival of the 'talkies' and colour film, as well as numerous refits during cinema's golden era. Peter Free was manager from 1960, but had actually been associated with the venue since childhood, as his father served as projectionist from 1915 and his mother sold tickets from the

Sustainable Wantage are keen to share their templates and resources, to encourage other groups to introduce the project in their communities. Could a similar organisation be set up in Halesworth? The thermal imaging camera would be available again in March for a month when it would be used, primarily for the benefit of those in fuel poverty or in rented properties. Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) were also discussed. Four people were actively considering installing an ASHP. For more information see: halesworthash.com

On January 27th, the energy subcommittee, chaired by Chris Hart, held a packed public meeting in the Co-op Community room to discuss the value of insulating houses against heat loss. This is the first of 12-monthly public meetings to be held by Halesworth Area Sustainable Hub (ASH) in 2024. To start with, Chris showed pictures taken on a survey of local homes using a thermal imaging camera loaned by Suffolk Climate Change Partnership. These featured both exterior shots, where bright colours indicated heat leaking from buildings, and interiors where dark colours showed cold penetrating a room. These mostly confirmed the owners' experience, while identifying leaks more precisely. Curing these leaks by insulation can considerably reduce the cost of heating a building, and its effect on the climate crisis. For those who could not insulate from their own resources, County Counsellor Annette Dunning indicated that the Suffolk Warm Homes grant scheme covers most forms of insulation.

Mysteries going back over 3,000 years are being unravelled at Halesworth & District Museum, courtesy of Cambridge University. Early in 2011, two hoards of Bronze Age axe heads, spears and a rapier blade were discovered in Wissett by Chris Frost and Marilyn Throssell, two responsible metal detectorists. The hoards were found about nine feet apart. The second hoard was excavated fully by the County Archaeological Team and careful expert examination of the objects has shown them to be over 3,000 years old, dating to the Middle Bronze Age (c.1500-1150BC). Researcher Jil Spoto has gained our permission to carry out metallurgical analysis of the Bronze Age Wissett hoards, working under the supervision of Prof. Marcos MartinonTorres, Pitt-Rivers Professor of Archaeological Science. The project, involves 3D scanning

of 11 axe heads plus other artefacts found at the same time, and sampling for chemical analysis and lead isotope analysis. We hope this work will unlock some of the secrets of our Bronze Age treasures, including possible sources for the metal, whether several axes were cast in the same mould, and whether they had been used before they were deposited in the ground. If time allows, further comparative analysis may be made on the hoards we have from Bramfield and Blythburgh. Many regular visitors to the Museum will be aware that the hoards represent one of the finest collections of palstave axe heads in the UK. If you haven't seen them, they are well worth a visit. As a Museum housing nationally recognised treasures, it is fitting that our next talk, on April 11th, has the title 'What is Treasure - According to the Law?' As usual, the talk will take place at the United Reformed Church on Quay Street, Halesworth, starting at 7:30pm (doors open at 7pm). Entry costs £6, or £3 for Friends of the Museum. Bungay Community Support expanding their reach

Calling all poets! ...or anyone who enjoys putting pen to paper! So many people in our community are disappointed at the apparent lack of awareness by energy providers with regard to the impact their proposed plans could have on our communities. The potential for damage to the coast between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness and inland over a large swathe of our county, means not only loss of wildlife and their habitats, but a detrimental impact on the quality of life for residents, businesses and tourism for years to come. Many of you will know of Suffolk Energy Action Solutions (SEAS) opposition to these plans and seen their support for alternative solutions involving keeping most wind and energy infrastructure offshore, taking power via subsea cabling closer to where it is needed and connecting to the grid onshore at brownfield sites. Here is an opportunity for an alternative protest which SEAS is supporting. We'd love you to write a poem. The poem you write might tell of the possible impact the onshore energy proposals could have on our landscape, our health, our community or our wildlife, taking care not to berate any political party or individual as

SEAS will be unable to publish them. So do please start writing, keeping your poem to an A4 size sheet with minimum font size of 12 but preferably larger. You may submit more than one poem. SEAS will select and publish a poem a day on social media which will be circulated to many people in the area and beyond. Each poem will have the copyright symbol added and be attributed to you as poet. You may find it helpful to sign up to the SEAS newsletter so you can follow the selected poems on their Facebook and Instagram pages. Send your poems to SEAS via the following email: withonevoicepoetrychallenge@ gmail.com and include your name and your email address. Submissions open until April 30th. It could have further impact to have the poems displayed throughout the area. We hope to laminate some selected poems and display them in a variety of places in East Suffolk e.g. lampposts, shop windows, notice boards even Aldeburgh Community Hospital sensory garden which is a gem, open to all and the spring flowers will soon be a delight to see. Poems may start to appear on display from mid-February so do have a go. Thank you in advance for your much anticipated offerings.

interaction and to involve them more in the local community. The wish list is also for people who are perhaps part of an art group and would be interested in working on art projects with the residents or including them perhaps in drawing classes, either to skill share or have the residents as models. If you have a talent, skill, interest or hobby you could share or talk about, we'd love to hear from you. Please email Leanne: activityoaklands@yahoo.com with a basic outline of what you could do to become involved. Thank you.

Measles vaccination plea from Dr. Dan Poulter, MP As an NHS hospital doctor who has worked in some of the biggest and best London Hospitals throughout my medical career, I am only too familiar with the signs and symptoms of Measles. Measles is an illness with unpleasant and sometimes lifethreatening complications; a virus that Britain had hoped to eradicate through a vaccination programme delivering herd immunity, but unfortunately, parents failing to vaccinate their children has resulted in a loss of herd immunity and a recent surge in Measles cases. Until recently, herd immunity had meant that cases of Measles had been isolated to small outbreaks in London and the big cities. However, the loss of herd immunity means that we are now seeing a surge of cases throughout the UK. Herd immunity is where the spread of an infectious disease within a population is prevented by the pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of people within

that population. In Britain, herd immunity against Measles had, in the past, been conveyed by an effective vaccination program, which in recent years meant a two-dose course of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) triple vaccine administered before a child's fifth birthday. The MMR vaccine is routinely offered by health visitors and GPs. Herd immunity against Measles is achieved when 95% or more of the population have gained immunity. But in parts of London and Birmingham, less than 70% of the population have completed the MMR vaccination course by their fifth birthday. In Suffolk, the picture is better, with 89.1% of children being fully vaccinated by their 5th birthday but this is insufficient to convey herd immunity, and means that over 1 in 10 children in our county are not fully protected against the Measles virus. Measles is not an illness to be dismissed lightly. It is highly contagious with an R rate (or

reproduction rate) of between 15 and 16. When compared to the R rate of the first strain of Covid19 of between two and three, it is clear that Measles spreads easily and quickly in the unvaccinated. The school classroom is particularly fertile territory for the Measles virus to spread. The reason why vaccination against Measles is so important is because it can result in serious and life-threatening complications including pneumonia, meningitis, blindness and seizures. In pregnancy, Measles can cause miscarriage, still birth and premature labour. The task now is to restore herd immunity against Measles. If you or your child or grandchild has not completed the MMR vaccination course, then please book an appointment with your GP. It may just save a child's life. Dr Dan Poulter is the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and a practising NHS Doctor.

You are invited to join with the combined Churches in Aldeburgh for The World Day Of Prayer (WDP) 2024 on March 1st at 11am at The Fairfield Centre, Aldeburgh followed by free soup and roll lunch. Everyone is very welcome. The WDP Service takes place on the first Friday in March each year. On that day, people all around the world will be praying for one country. The country this year is Palestine, and the theme is "Bearing with one another in love". We will be joining with people across 146 countries and islands to pray with and for the people of Palestine. Future themes will include:

for the period January-23 to March-24, a 15-month period, to be reported on, and taxed in, the 2023/24 tax year. Clearly this would result in a higher tax liability than the usual 12-month period. If the taxpayer has any Overlap Profits (these arise at the commencement of a trade where accounts are drawn up to a date other than the end of a tax year and can result in an element of profits being taxed twice), these can be deducted from profits in the 2023/24 transitional year. In addition, taxpayers have the option to spread any additional transitional profits over up to five tax years. For example, if Mrs Smith generates steady profits of £20,000 per year, a 15-month period to March-24 would create £25,000 of profits. If she has £1,000 of overlap profits, the excess taxable profit is now £4,000. Spreading this over five years would mean an additional £800 taxed in each of the years 2023/24 to 2027/28. However, businesses won't always have full control over their reporting date, which may be fixed for a variety of reasons, and may have to apportion figures each year. If actual figures for the

Are you aware of the recent changes to how sole-traders and partners are taxed on their profits? Prior to 6th April 2023, unincorporated businesses could choose an annual reporting date and draw up accounts to that date every year. The profits from those accounts were taxed depending on the tax year in which the final day of the year falls. For example, Mrs Smith draws up accounts to 31st December each year, her profits for the year to December 2022 were taxed on the 2022/23 return. From 2023/24, HMRC changed these fundamental rules so that sole-traders and partnerships must instead report profits relating specifically to the tax year running 6th April to the following 5th April (or 1st April to 31st March). To facilitate this, businesses have two options; change their accounting year end to the tax year end or retain their current accounting date and apportion figures from two sets of accounting years into one tax return. Going back to Mrs Smith, changing her accounting year would mean drawing up accounts

INK Festival returns!

70 new original plays, diverse performances and more! The eighth annual INK Festival takes place from April 11th to 14th in Halesworth. The festival will expand further across the town, creating more original performance spaces, and showcasing 70 new short plays for both stage and radio. These plays are chosen from nearly a thousand submissions reflecting the talent of both new as well as experienced writers, many from our region. What sets the INK Festival apart is that every play is selected, cast and produced by INK. These original plays are all under 20 minutes. Each entry is read at least five times before a short list is formed. Directors then make their choices from this selection. INK casts the plays from auditions

in Suffolk and London bringing together a team of more than 60 professional theatre practitioners. This year, the diverse submission categories include: A Play on a Bus, Planet INK, Cock Ups, Treasure and Radio Comedy creating a wide variety of relevant, entertaining and thought-provoking plays. There are also a number of five-minute plays from some very special supporters, The INKredibles: John Boyne, Jon Canter, Christopher Douglas, Jan Etherington and Rachel Joyce. Beyond the plays, the festival boasts an exciting line-up of stand-up comedy, art, poetry, music, children's programmes, fascinating talks including Juliet Stevenson, workshops, short new films and much more. Sunday Funday (April 14th)

transforms the Market Square with street performers, music, stalls and food, an ideal free event for families to enjoy. Luke Wright has curated a stunning line up of performance poets featuring James McDermott, Alice D'Lumiere, Martin Figura, Kate Fox and Elvis Mc Gonagall. Luke himself showcases his new show Joy on Saturday April 13th. There will be workshops to help you write better scripts, better comedy and better poetry and special guests to enlighten you! All these events are covered by the day ticket, priced from £25 for adults. Day tickets for students (16-25yrs) are just £10. A carer ticket is also available for free. Under 16-year-olds are free with an accompanying adult. www.inkfestival.org

In exchange for the three organisations' huge number of volunteers throughout the year and their work, they were provided with a total of £33,000. Every year, the rally committee also chooses several additional local charities to support, and in 2023 these were the Pear Tree Fund in Halesworth, Sole Bay Care Fund and Beccles Army Cadets.

At an event in January, the rally organisers presented these three nominated charities with donations totalling more than £11,000 and heard from representatives from each organisation about how their work is benefitting local people. The event was also an opportunity to thank the many volunteers who give up their time throughout the year to make the rally possible. Chair, Helen Walker said: "Our 47th rally was another successful event, and we were pleased to see so many visitors and exhibitors enjoying their weekend. From its earliest days, the rally's main aim has been to raise money to support local good causes and we are delighted to still be able to do this. As always, I would like to thank our committee and volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes throughout

the year to make the rally as successful as possible. We are already working on the 48th rally, which takes place on 21 and 22 September at Henham Park and we look forward to seeing everyone there." agricultural history, and there are many farms in the surrounding area that still produce crops such as potatoes and barley. The village itself is home to a range of businesses, including a post office, a convenience store, and a couple of pubs. One of Laxfield's main attractions is the Low House pub, which is one of the oldest and most historic in the region. The pub has been in operation for over 700 years and has a fascinating history. It was used as a meeting place by the Lollards, a religious movement in the 14th and 15th centuries that challenged the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. The pub is also known

for its extensive collection of beer mats, and has been featured in several publications. In addition to its historic buildings and attractions, Laxfield is surrounded by beautiful countryside, which makes it a popular destination for walkers and hikers. The village is located on the edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is a protected area that includes over 150 square miles of coastline and

countryside. One of the best ways to explore the local area is by following one of the many walking trails that start in Laxfield. The Laxfield Circular Walk is a popular option that takes you through the village and the surrounding countryside. If you're interested in history, the village is home to the Laxfield and District Museum, which is located in the village hall. The museum has a fascinating collection of artifacts and

documents that tell the story of the village and its people. Laxfield is a beautiful and historic village that is well worth a visit. Whether you're interested in history, walking, or just enjoying a quiet pint in a traditional pub, Laxfield has something for everyone. Its location in the heart of the Suffolk countryside also makes it a great base for exploring the local area and discovering all the hidden gems that this part of England has to offer.

Laxfield is a small, charming and quiet place, but don't let its size fool you; it is steeped in history and boasts a variety of attractions for both locals and visitors. The village's history dates back to the Saxon period, and it has retained many of its historic buildings, including the Church of All Saints, which dates back to the 14th century. The church is a popular spot for visitors, and it has an interesting history. The tower was struck by lightning in the 17th century, and the resulting fire destroyed much of the church. It was later rebuilt and has remained a fixture of the village ever since. Laxfield also has a rich

Suffolk New College On The Coast in Halesworth officially opened in September 2020. The vocational and training centre joined the family of Suffolk New College's provision. So far, hundreds of students have studied on a mixture of level one and level two Catering, Construction, Engineering, English, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Maths and Motor Vehicle programmes and leisure learning programmes in Floristry, Print Design and Spanish. Sherry Storer is Head of the Campus and she has over two decades of experience in education but believes this is her ideal job. She said: "I consider this to be a rare privilege to help support the people of Halesworth. Halesworth has some amazing facilities and it's great to be able

to support people of all ages and help them gain the skills they need to work in industries in and around Suffolk and East Anglia. One of the reasons for setting up was to have a positive impact on the local community. As part of that, we've hosted free tea parties for those who are considered to be rurally isolated, teamed up with the council to give residents cooking lessons and held a free fun family day based around Halloween. We are incredibly honoured to have been given the opportunity to help learners of all ages progress with us to further and higher educational opportunities and careers, or indulge themselves by getting a new hobby via one of our leisure programmes." For more details about all of the campuses and courses, visit: www.suffolk.ac.uk
