WANT A REFRESHING SWIM?

What a great switch-on event we had on November 18th. After a bit of a damp start, the weather dried up and the weather was incredibly mild for mid-November. Due to the weather, Halesworth Harmony performed in St. Mary's where they sounded beautifully festive and entertained those looking at the wonderful array of decorated Christmas trees. The church had a lovely busy atmosphere with various stalls and many excited children waiting to see Father Christmas and his helper. Thank you Father Christmas for making time in your busy schedule to come to Halesworth. Many thanks to Ginni and her team for organising this part of the afternoon and arranging activities for the children while they waited. The Halesworth Strummers performed outside the Toy Shop and drew an admiring crowd who enjoyed their wide range of songs. The Oxblood Molly Dancers

REASONS TO SWIM AT VALLEY FARM

were greatly entertaining and the final act of the afternoon was the Pop Chorus who entertained the ever-increasing crowds of people waiting to see Father Christmas and the switch-on. Father Christmas, his four volunteer reindeer and another of his elves then arrived in his cart (kindly loaned by Mr. Winter) and accompanied by Tim Fitzheigham followed the Band of the Royal Legion Leiston up the Thoroughfare to the White Hart. Once there, following a blessing from Rev Dominic and a short speech from Teresa Walsh, Tim and the winner of the Scarecrow Trail competition led the countdown for the lights to be switched on. Festivities then moved on up to the Market Place where on a stage (kindly loaned by Adnams) 'The Someones' entertained the huge crowd who also enjoyed the various catering stalls and the bar organised by Ollie Platt.

Business Connections for kindly supplying the audio equipment for the switch on event and to Matt Bailey for getting it working successfully. While the above grants really help with the costs they only go part way towards the £15,000 needed to put on the event and this is where the committee would like to thank you, the Halesworth community, for all your support and help with our various fundraising efforts. This year, we had a Grand Draw for the first time which raised an amazing £1,100. We also had a quiz, a popup shop, various stalls etc. As well as your monetary support, we also appreciate all your kind comments in saying what a great event it is and how good the town looks all lit up for Christmas. Thanks also to Simon and Cleo at The Angel for providing a monthly meeting room for HEM. Many thanks to Brenda at Just Nice Things for the pop-up shop in September. Also, thanks to the organisers of the successful Scarecrow Festival and to the Halesworth Fairies for their donations. Thanks too goes to Durrants for their sponsorship of the marching band and also

for allowing various stalls to be sited outside Durrants throughout the year. As you can see, Halesworth Festive Lights is a real community effort to benefit the whole community as well as local traders so finally a huge thank you to everyone who has supported HEM throughout the year in any way. Many thanks to the local businesses who have already given a donation to enable our town to look so festive at this time of year. If you have not yet given and you would like too, it's not too late! So please contact Gary Stannard at Lovewell Blake if you wish to show your appreciation of our efforts to make the town centre such an attractive place to visit and shop in during the festive season. HEM is a group of local volunteers who work through the year organising the switch on event and raising the funds to make our town look welcoming for the festive season. If you feel inspired to join us to make sure next years event (Saturday 23rd November 2024) is a success, please look at our Facebook page for details of our first meeting of the year which will be in February.

As you can imagine, all of the above doesn't just happen on the day but is the culmination of much hard work by the Halesworth Events Management (HEM) committee and individuals who give freely of their time to help organise and run the event. Many, many thanks must go to Winston and his team at Pearce & Kemp for their hard work in putting up the lights, dealing with any problems and making sure all was safe. This year, we are sure you will all agree the addition of extra icicle lights linking the Thoroughfare and the Market Place really help join these two areas of the town. Many thanks too goes to Halesworth Town Council for a grant which helped with the costs and also to our two Waveney District Councillors who gave a grant to cover the cost of purchasing the two trees. The Town Clerks also deserve our thanks for co-ordinating the road closures as does Annette Dunning for putting out the necessary signage. Thanks too goes to the Market Place and Thoroughfare traders and residents for co-operating with the road closure. We are most grateful too to Halesworth

Celebration of the first 25 years of the Green In 2024, the Green volunteers will be running events to celebrate the (nearly) 25 years of the establishment of Halesworth Millennium Green. There will be an event to launch the celebration in February, look out for information about where and what. Throughout the year, there will be opportunities for you to spend a couple of hours on the Green with an expert of one kind or another helping to survey what's there. Wildlife that moves as well as wildlife that's rooted to the spot will be checked over. More details in next month's Community News. The Green can be stunning in these winter months, and it's doing its job of helping to prevent flooding in the town by soaking up water in the meadows. So don't be frustrated by the puddles, put

on your wellies and keep visiting, but stay well away from the New Reach and the river when they are full. Our local rivers are "flashy" because of all the drainage into them and the levels can come up very, very quickly. Two of our lump benches were swept a long way from their places by the water. These have now been replaced by the volunteers, but this shows how powerful flood water can be. Do keep letting us know of any exciting sightings. Have a look at the website: millenniumgreen. halesworth.net which carries news and information, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. You can contact the Green directly on email: thegreen@halesworth.net and, please only in an emergency, on: 07743 772029.

Circle 67 will always welcome new members of whatever age, ability or previous experience. Although we do serious drama, there is a lot of fun to be had in putting performances together, be it on stage, behind the scenes, working with the costumes, scenery, props and all the other activities that make amateur dramatics so enjoyable. Come and see what we have planned for our spring production! If you are interested in joining, check out our website: www. circle67.co.uk or contact the group via: info@circle67.co.uk. They will be supported by 14 artists (all established practitioners) drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines. A series of lectures, seminars, and discussions on the key themes will be led by visiting artists who are working across boundaries, at the intersection of the arts, and other areas like science and new technologies. Halesworth's local community will be invited to attend the evening lecture series which will be free of charge. Circle 67 Drama Group has been performing plays for more than 50 years. Based in Bramfield Village Hall, the group stages three productions each year; A winter show (which often takes the form of a pantomime), a play in spring (which previously has been as varied as a Greek tragedy 'Antigone', translations of Moliere 'Tartuffe, The Miser', or more contemporary 'Blithe Spirit, A Streetcar Named Desire'), as well as the ever popular adaptations of Dickens ('The Old Curiosity Shop', 'Great Expectations' and 'A Christmas Carol', currently in rehearsal). The summer season brings our shorter summer Shakespeare productions. The plays are pared down to usually just over an hour in length and performed in local pub gardens and at Bungay Castle. As well as our usual annual programme, we have also performed a mediaeval pageant

Art Rabble: Unveiling talent in Halesworth

EVERY TREE IS AN INDIVIDUAL!

Perched on top of a hill in Halesworth is a vibrant art collective that you may not have heard of. Art Box Arts supports a group of nine artists with disabilities, from autism to learning disabilities and others besides. Led by the dynamic duo of Helen and Steve, Art Box Arts isn't just an art group, it's a family; a support network where artists are encouraged to aim high and surpass expectations. The group's members come together in an atmosphere of mutual support and

Trees are available to select and collect direct from the farm, or a delivery service is available if required. Both cash and card accepted.

understanding. They celebrate birthdays and enjoy fish and chip Fridays. Some visit once a week, others three or four times a week. Some bring along their carers, others fly solo. No two artists follow the same journey; instead they are encouraged to explore individual themes and styles. As such, their work is exciting and eclectic and there is never a dull moment! Robin has a real interest in classic American cars. "Southwold" was painted by Spencer in a vibrant Hockneyinspired style. George's "Puffins"

prints are a best-seller on the Art Rabble website but he also takes private commissions for bespoke work. Steve and Helen are very proactive in arranging exhibitions for the group and they have participated in events at the Halesworth Gallery, Wingfield Barns and Pear Tree Café in Saxmundham. The artists eagerly anticipate these events, where the walls come alive with colour. Showcasing their work brings immense pride to the artists, a sense of recognition for their skills.

Art Box Arts is testament to the unique power of art, that it is capable of forging connections and breaking down barriers. The Halesworth group show that artists with disabilities have a wonderful story to tell and can do this with real skill, through their art. A selection of the artist's work is available all year round from Art Rabble. Art Rabble is a social enterprise selling artwork by disabled artists, for disabled artists. To support the Halesworth artists, please visit: www.art-rabble.org.

Report from the 2nd Halesworth Brownies Since our last report, we have welcomed four new Brownies to the group, we hope you enjoy your time with us. On our first evening back in September, we had a special show and tell with the brownies showing us items from the school holidays and we had a chat about what we had been up to. We also had a visit from some stick insects which the brownies found very interesting, thank you to John for bringing them in. We have recently completed our jobs badge. For this, the Brownies needed to complete three different parts. For the first part, the brownies got the chance to ask the leaders about their jobs and volunteering roles. Some of the questions asked included: What is your favourite part of your job? What is the best part of your job? How did you get your job? What qualifications did you need? For the 2nd and 3rd part of the badge, the brownies got to design a job advert and a poster of what their dream job is and what Alan on: 07562 007125. A church and charity, The qualifications and experience they Salvation Army expresses may need. On one of our evenings, we its Christian faith by offering friendship, practical help and support to some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities. To help support The Salvation Army's yearround work please visit: www. salvationarmy.org.uk/donate For more information about the Christmas Present Appeal and ideas about gifts, see our website: www.salvationarmy. org.uk/christmas-present-appeal. For more information on Woodbridge Salvation Army, visit: www.salvationarmy.org. uk/woodbridge.

The Salvation Army is calling on the community to donate new toys to its Christmas Present Appeal and support families who will struggle to make ends meet over the festive season. Salvation Army church leader Major Alan Hill said: "Helping a parent provide a gift for their child is more than just financial support, it brings the joy of Christmas into their home. We have seen the devastating effect of the cost of living crisis. People are really struggling and so we are doing what we can to relieve the pressure this Christmas. The Salvation Army's present appeal is an opportunity for people in our communities to embrace the spirit of Christmas and give to families and individuals who have nothing. We have been humbled

by the public's generosity over the years and hope this year our appeal will be able to bring some comfort and joy to people who are struggling the most." Alan said he would be particularly grateful for donations for older children. He explained: "Older children tend to get unintentionally forgotten about and every year we have to go out and buy things for them. When we sort our donations, we know what age group we're dealing with and it would be great to have things for children for those age 12 and above." The church on New Street in Woodbridge will be collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys until December 15th. The Salvation Army will sort and distribute the gifts to children and families in the area through

The winning chocolates were orange chocolate buttons and white chocolate buttons. We have being busy with various different crafts including making bookmarks, pencil cases and decorating baubles for the Christmas tree festival, you can find our tree in St. Mary's Church until the end of December. We have also made some shortbread. The brownies thoroughly enjoyed themselves learning how to make it. Finally, a quick run around the park before heading back to school on the bus just in time for lunch. Phew! We'd like to say a really big thank you to all of the lovely people we met along the way who helped to make our visit so special. At Ringsfield, the reception children have been learning about how to look after our planet. The children showed lots of interest in recycling, so that became the main focus for our learning. We learnt about the three Rs (recycle, reuse and reduce) and found out some of the things we can do at school and home to help. We investigated different materials

Update from Ringsfield, Bramfield & Brampton Schools The reception children at Bramfield Primary School travelled all the way to Halesworth this month, catching the border bus on a visit to our wonderful local library. It was a first for many of the children to travel by bus and there was lots of excitement as we rounded corners or rode over bumps! On arrival at the library, we were welcomed by Julie (the Manager) who told us about borrowing books and all that the library has to offer. Then we shared a story and had a chance to browse all the lovely Christmas books. Next, we visited the market to purchase our morning snack where the fruit and vegetable stall owner was kind enough to offer us a complimentary apple

and we discussed the bin colours we have at home. We also thought about where else we might see large recycling bins. We decided to do a litter pick in the village and made sure we sorted the recycling from the waste. We were sad at how much litter we found and the children were particularly worried about children playing in the park and animals being hurt. We will work with our school eco group to continue to encourage others to help look after our local community. At Brampton Primary School, we've been reading the book 'The Oak Tree' by Julia Donaldson. The children learnt about the life cycle of an oak tree and we found out about different animals that might live in woodlands. We went for a walk in Stoven Woods and looked at what nature we could see. The children found some deer prints in the mud! We want to take this opportunity to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The committee of Wickham Market Flower Club would like to wish all our members a Very Happy New Year. Hopefully your Christmas was delightful, and Santa treated you well and your sprouts came up to standard. A cheery reminder that our first meeting for 2024 is on Thursday 25th at the Wickham Market Village Hall, IP13 0HE. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. The demonstrator will be Gill McGregor with 'January Floral Jewels'. We look forward to seeing you there. Hopefully there will be no white stuff underfoot!

hosting the HWAT group of artists at the Bell Gallery for December. With 28 members exhibiting, there is going to be an amazing variety of artistic styles on show, so definitely something for everyone. The celebration of the Gallery's first birthday coincides with this, our 12th exhibition and what a wonderful first year we have enjoyed. It will be a pleasure to round off a successful year by exhibiting work from HWAT. When we opened, it was our aim to provide a space to come and enjoy contemporary artworks in a relaxed, friendly setting, without feeling intimidated or put off by the formality that can sometimes surround an art gallery. We encourage people to grab a coffee and look around the exhibitions at their leisure, whilst having a chat with one of the on-duty artists or one of our own gallery assistants if they would like to know more about the artworks." A private view supported by the group's long-standing sponsor, Durrants (the region's leading estate agent) will take place on the evening of November 30th from 5pm until 7:30pm. All are welcome to join HWAT for a drink and a chat while browsing the range of work on show. A "Meet the Artists" day on December 9th will see HWAT members on hand to show and talk about their work to visitors throughout the day. Visitors are most welcome to call in and enjoy a complimentary drink while browsing the exhibition. The show will also be open all day throughout the Bungay Winter Street Market on December 2nd. The majority of works will be for sale at the event which takes place at The Bell Gallery, Earsham Street, Bungay. For more information, please visit: www.hwat.org.uk

abstract paintings, landscapes, prints, drawings, sculpture, textile art and hand-made books. There will be work with a wide range of sizes and prices. This is an ideal opportunity to view and purchase high quality artworks created by this selected group of professional Waveney Valley artists. The artists taking part are: Nicci Dedman, Kath Wallace, Barbara Bernard, Christina Greathead, Caryl Challis, Malcolm Cudmore, Rosemary Elliott, Rosie Anderson, Isabel Auker, Liz Taunt, Sara Johnson, Rachel Wiles, Rhonda Whitehead, Chris Mound, Lisa Henshall, Diana McKenna, Dom Theobald, Nell Close, Carolyn Moulton, Paul Zawadzki, Noelle Francis, John Ogden, Gill Levin, Ingrid Duffy, Rose Martin, Val Lindsell, Tim Summerson and Vicky Townley. Artist Barbara Bernard said: "The Bell Gallery is such an attractive space. I'm looking forward to showing some local work as well as plein air painting from my travels in USA and Italy." The exhibition is open from November 27th until December 23rd, 10am to 4:30pm, seven days a week. Dom Theobald, who has recently rejoined HWAT said: "I'm delighted to return to HWAT after a period of flux and temporary working space. It is a great pleasure to show some work at The Bell Gallery for the first time, my works are landscapes of sorts, reinvented versions of where I live - the Waveney Valley. Into these scenes I have placed forms: houses and rivers, trees and paths, boats and clouds. These are rhythmic images. To my mind they are as full of sounds as colour. Both solid, both ethereal." The Bell Gallery has been open for nearly a year and owner Jackie Bell said: "We are delighted to be

We would like to wish all our families a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. Please take time to visit the '12 Days of Christmas'-themed Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary's Church during December. The after school club children used recycled wooden slats which they cut to size, assembled, painted and glitter decorated to create a beautiful tree which they adorned with beautifully made woolly pompoms. The playschool children had fun painting their hands to create feathers to create 'A Partridge in a Pear Tree' in the centre. They (and we) are all so proud of their achievements. Art collective heads to The Bell Gallery An art collective from the picturesque Waveney Valley is heading to Bungay for a one-off exhibition. Harleston & Waveney Art Trail collective (HWAT), based on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk, will be exhibiting at The Bell Gallery this winter. It's the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore the work of this diverse group in one location. Visitors to The HWAT Winter Show will be able to see works from 28 artists who ordinarily host an art trail through south Norfolk and north Suffolk each summer. Group chairman Malcolm Cudmore said: "This will be the largest, most fully representative exhibition we've mounted in a long time and will be quite a show. As we approach our 20th anniversary as a group, this is a wonderful chance for members to show their work together. Usually, each artist exhibits in their own studio during the Art Trail each year and visitors move around the region to see their work. Now, regular and new visitors will be able to appreciate the scope and quality of members' work in one wonderful show. We look forward to seeing old and new friends of the Trail at The Bell Gallery." Works on show will include large and small figurative and

Here at the Hoppa, we're looking forward to the New Year, and hoping we continue to attract more volunteer drivers, and welcome even more new customers. Unfortunately, we do have to announce that until further notice, we will not be stopping at Cutlers Hill Surgery unless requested to do so. This is due to the very poor state of the road going to the Surgery which has many potholes, and these damage the Hoppa bus and make the ride uncomfortable for some of our passengers. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to avoid them. If you need to get to the Surgery or be collected from there, please phone the office on: 01986 875900 before 9:25am to make sure we collect you. We are sorry for any inconvenience, but we cannot afford to keep replacing tyres. We are still looking for a volunteer to help keep our buses running. Each week, we need to check engine oil and other fluid

We held our annual Christmas Fair on November 18th and (despite it being a very rainy morning) the event was a huge success! The hall looked very Christmassy and was very busy as everyone enjoyed the warm friendly atmosphere. We hope you all had a great time browsing the stalls and enjoyed our light lunch menu this year. It's always a pleasure to see our loyal supporters and welcome new ones. The committee and volunteers are so very grateful that you all come along to our fundraising events and are so

very generous. We are absolutely delighted to report that you all raised the amazing amount of £2,692.66 for the vital work that Cancer Research does. Thank you. The committee would like to thank our brilliant volunteers as we couldn't put on such a big event without you all and an extra thank you to Alan and Colin who did a sterling job washing up and Valerie and Diane for being in the kitchen with our two committee members as the kitchen is such hard work and gets very busy. Find and Suffolk Singers - Giving with Song On January 20th, Suffolk Singers together with the Suffolk based charity, Families in Need (FIND), will present a fun concert 'Giving with Song' under the direction of Claire Weston, Suffolk Singer's Musical Director. It will be in Woodbridge's Community Hall, IP12 1AU, commencing at 7:30pm. This year will be the fourth concert in which Suffolk Singers has supported FIND to raise funds for this much needed charity. The 'Giving with Song' concert tickets are £15 which includes a light supper (bring your own drinks) and are available from: 01449 7111139 or: www.wegotickets. com. Advance booking is advised. Who are FIND? Families in Need (FIND) was established and registered in 1990

by Maureen Reynel, MBE to help those that are deprived of a minimum standard of living. It does so through a wide scope of activities by offering food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and nappies, beds and bedding, and, when available, cookers, washing machines and refrigerators. All of these freely given. Personal support is also given if and when it is appropriate. The demand on the charity increases year by year. For example 3,847 food parcels were distributed in 2018, rising to more than 7,600 during 2020 and 2021. In 2022, FIND helped over 6,000 adults, double the number helped in 2017. FIND strive to work harder every year to bring comfort to the lives of thousands of children and families in poverty. The structure

of the process is via a small band of committed volunteers who willingly give their time, inspired by Maureen Reynel who has committed her life to this worthy project. How this works: Food parcels: The volunteers sort donated food, collect from local stores, make up the parcels and then deliver them to individuals and families in crisis. Toiletries and personal care items are also provided. All those who receive food parcels are referred by local agencies for FIND's support. Furniture and household items: FIND regularly steps in to help both individuals and families with no money to purchase even the most basic personal items. FIND has a furniture store where each week volunteers pick up items and deliver them to individuals

or families in need. To continue this service, FIND need donations of furniture and other household items in good order. Alternatively, they welcome cash donations. Support for rough sleepers: FIND helps in many ways, providing footwear, clothing, warm coats and sleeping bags, paying for prescriptions, help with travel and providing food parcels. In addition, there is a small fund that enables them to help in paying for emergency accommodation for rough sleepers. To sustain this service, there is a continuous need for donations of items in good condition (warm clothing, strong footwear, coats, sleeping bags) or again, they welcome cash donations. Jeremy Hunt recently presented his Autumn Statement, setting the scene for the tax year to come and with some changes applying much earlier. National Insurance (NI) cuts were at the forefront of the announcements. For the selfemployed, Class 4 NI, payable on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, will be cut from 9% to 8% from April 2024. In addition, Class 2 NI, currently payable by the selfemployed, will be abolished from April 2024. Payment of Class 2 NI was previously a qualifying factor for benefits such as State Pension. Moving forward, those earning over £12,570 (and therefore subject to Class 4 NI) will continue to earn a qualifying year. Those earning between £6,725 and £12,570 will also earn a qualifying year, despite no longer having to pay NI. For those with profits less than £6,725, the option to voluntarily pay Class 2 NI to earn a qualifying year will remain, the rate remaining frozen at its current level of £3.45 per week for 2024/25. The main rate of employees' Class 1 NI will be cut from 12% to 10% from 6th January 2024.

Alongside this, the National Living Wage will increase from £10.42 to £11.44 an hour from April 2024. For the first time, this will apply to 21-year-olds, having previously applied to those 23 and over. Businesses will need to be prepared to implement these changes, both in terms of budgets and payroll software. The income tax rates and thresholds for 2024/25 will remain frozen at the current rates, as previously announced in the March budget. The personal allowance will stay at £12,570 and the higher rate threshold at £50,270 until April 2028. Whilst the rates remain frozen, assuming earnings increase with inflation, this represents an underlying tax increase, the so-called 'fiscal drag' effect. For sole-traders and partnerships considering use of the cash-basis method of accounting, the turnover threshold of £150,000 has been removed entirely. Cash-basis can be a simpler method than the traditional accruals method and relates largely to actual funds received and paid in the year, but for that reason it won't be right for all businesses, for example

those with fluctuating cashflows and profitability levels. There are also some restrictions to the tax reliefs available, therefore anyone seeking to make a change should consider the implications carefully. For companies, full expensing of qualifying plant and machinery (offsetting the full cost of the capital equipment against trading profits) was made permanent. Overall, an interesting bag, with perhaps more to come in the spring. By Liz Lockwood (pictured below), Manager, Ensors Accountants LLP

Leiston Film Theatre

Adrian Ramsay calls to back small businesses and help our market towns

All aboard a magic carpet to Pantoland this January! Team B Productions invite you on a magic carpet ride to Old Peking in January, when they bring you a fabulous family Pantomime worth wishing for. Aladdin appears live at the Leiston Film Theatre from January 12th to the 14th, 2024, with demand for tickets so high, seats for some performances are already limited. When the wicked Abanazar learns of a magical lamp that could transform him into the most powerful sorcerer in Pantoland, he tricks Aladdin into retrieving the lamp from a cave. But when a glamorous Genie appears, an adventure begins that will see Aladdin, the Twanky family and the beautiful Princess Jasmine in a battle between good and evil. The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and is being brought to the stage under

his 'Team B Productions' title - a group of experienced am-dram performers, whose previous sell-out successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe. The group have recently enjoyed huge success with a three-night, sell-out run, with their Pantomime for grownups, 'Sleeping Booty' and work is already underway on their next family Pantomime for January 2025 and a brand-new comedydrama for September 2025. Aladdin promises another fun-filled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of laugh-out-loud slapstick fun. Wayne Burns (Leiston Leiston Film Theatre Manager & Pantomime

Director) is looking forward to bringing Aladdin to the stage. "Aladdin is one of my all-time favourite Pantomimes and the entire cast and crew can't wait to bring our brilliant script to life on stage and perform for such appreciative crowds. Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the musical director and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of

Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime extravaganza. Aladdin will be appearing live at the Leiston Film Theatre on: • Fri 12th Jan: 7:30pm. • Sat 13th Jan: 3pm & 7:30pm. • Sun 14th Jan: 11am & 3pm. Limited tickets are now available, priced: £17.95, £16.95 and £14.95. Book your seats today on 01728 830549 or online at: www.leistonfilmtheatre.co.uk.

Green Party co-leader and Waveney Valley MP candidate Adrian Ramsay is calling for a swathe of Small Business Saturday measures to help independent firms and the rural economy in the East. Adrian said: "As the Green Party MP candidate here in the Waveney Valley, I've been talking regularly to traders and small business owners in towns such as Eye, Bungay, Halesworth, Stowmarket and Diss and just last weekend, I met shopkeepers in Harleston during the Christmas Market. It's crystal clear each time I meet them how important small, independent businesses are to the economies of our market towns in the Waveney Valley and the wider Norfolk and Suffolk area. They are a big part of what makes those towns so special. Small businesses employ more people per square metre than giant stores, use more local suppliers and reinvest more of their earnings into the economy of market towns like Harleston than corporate chains whose profits go to remote shareholders. Yet there are many ways in which our country's tax, planning and transport system gives big businesses unfair advantages over smaller ones and, in doing so, undermine the economy of our market towns in Norfolk and Suffolk. For example, out

of town stores pay no business rates on their car parks, giving them effectively cheaper rates per square metre than small independent shops in town. Overseas-based online retailers can avoid VAT. To lift customer numbers for small businesses without increasing congestion, we need proper funding to restore and improve bus routes that connect villagers with their nearest market town. The government have reined back on its plan for bus funding, leaving people more and more dependent on cars to get town. Buses are a vital public service that bolster employment and the economic life of market towns and need to be funded accordingly. Small independent shops in towns and villages are losing customers and potential staff to urban areas as younger people are being priced out of housing and so move away, as a report from the Council for protection of Rural England revealed earlier this week. So, we need planning policies that encourage t r u l y affordable homes to be

built. Independent traders and tradespeople need access to electric vans on the same terms as large companies. Small businesses that I speak to all the time in the Waveney Valley want to green their businesses but can't do this without help. On top of that business owners who want to invest in insulation or solar panels risk having to pay higher business rates, because the rateable value of their property may have risen. There should be incentives for doing the right thing, not penalties. The Green Party's alternative Autumn Statement identified £30 billion that could be raised by making the super-rich pay a little more tax. Just £3 billion of that could be used to double funding for Green Transition Grants - to help small businesses prepare for and make the most of the opportunities of greening the economy."

This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated applicant to support on a voluntary basis, a small yet committed organisation which exhibits modern art in Suffolk and promotes local and young artists within our community. Our objective is, to 'exhibit modern painting and sculpture of the highest possible standard on a non-profit-making basis and for the general enjoyment of all; and, it is hoped, for the benefit of the artists since all works are for sale'. In addition to attending three annual Committee Meetings, the treasurer will spend approximately 10 hours per month (April to Sept); bookkeeping, overseeing accounts, artist sales, preparing and reporting the annual review of income and expenditure. We are interested in someone that can update and digitalise our current system. The role is a voluntary one. and tenderises the meat). - When the skin is crispy, turn the legs over and cook on the flesh side until it has browned. - When the chicken legs are browned all over, remove them from the pan and set aside on a plate or tray. - Turn the heat down and add the whole garlic cloves. - Cook them until they are soft and caramelized and then remove from the pan and set aside with the chicken. - Next, add the unsalted butter and melt gently. - When the butter is foaming, add the plain flour and mix it in quickly with a wooden spoon. - Cook the flour for a couple of minutes until it is golden and smelling biscuity. - Then add the stock, a ladleful at a time, whisking in each addition to make sure there are no lumps. Allow the sauce to thicken each time before adding the next ladleful.

- Once all the stock has been added, allow the sauce to bubble and thicken. - Then, add the wholegrain mustard, lemon juice and zest and double cream. Stir it in and then add the Maldon Garlic Sea Salt and some cracked black pepper. - Place the chicken legs back into the sauce along with the caramelized garlic cloves. - Place the lid on the pan and gently simmer this at a very low temperature for approximately 10 minutes or until the chicken legs are cooked through. The sauce should be glossy and creamy, however if it needs loosening add a splash of water or stock. - Finally, sprinkle over the tarragon and then serve with your favourite sides. We like to serve it with creamy mashed potato and greens.
