A weekend of heritage in Halesworth and surrounding villages

VALERIE LARGE valerielarge@icloud.com

Halesworth Heritage happening is scheduled again this year for 10th-11th and 17th-18th September with a series of events over both weekends. The theme for the national festival this year is Astounding Inventions. Last year saw the festival expand to Holton with the Mill and the Aviation Museum taking part and 2022 sees a return to Walpole Old Chapel, and a perfect example of the theme; an event on George Calver (18341927), who was a Master Mirror Maker of the late Victorian and Edwardian era. Born at Walpole near Halesworth in July 1834, the son of farm labourers who died when he was very young

Here at Beech House, one of our residents, Pauline has done a sponsored walk in aid of the charity Brain Tumour Research. This is a charity that is very close to her heart as Pauline recently lost one of her sons (Robert) to a brain tumour. Also, Peter (Pauline's youngest son) has a brain tumour but presently is stable on new medication. These medications are a result of charities like Brain Tumour Research and people supporting and donating enabling further research to be done. In the year 2020, Pauline suffered a stroke which left her weak on the left-hand side. Pauline has been reliant on a wheelchair to move around since. Two staff, Kelly and Stacey, have helped Pauline with her walk by pushing her in the wheelchair for very long walks to accomplish the ten miles that she needed to do. Once home to Beech House, Pauline would then get up and

walk the last few metres everyday with great determination. When Pauline first came to live at Beech House in 2021, she could not walk at all. With constant support from Kelly and Stacey and some physiotherapy input, she's learnt to walk again with one carer and using a zimmer frame. Pauline is very grateful to Kelly and Stacey for their help with rehabilitation and assisting her to walk again, she couldn't have done it without their time and patience. Pauline would like to thank Lorraine, Sam, and Cat for all of their support. Pauline is so grateful to everyone for their support in helping her to get to where she is today and for helping with her sponsored walk. Pauline also wants to say a special thank you to everyone who has sponsored. Pauline has raised £343 which is way beyond what she thought she'd raise.

Blythburgh will feature this year too, as the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Society have their open day at Blythburgh Station on Sunday 11th September. The station was the half-way point on the narrow gauge 1879 Southwold Railway, and served not only Blythburgh but the surrounding villages - until closure in 1929. The Open Day is an opportunity for the public to see the progress on-site, and to examine the HSNGR's plans for the future. Simply Stunning Local Neighbourhood Plan enters next stage

Wenhaston Flower Club On Tuesday 7th June, over 30 flower club members and friends enjoyed a very pleasant and interesting evening at Broome Beck Meadow, hosted by the delightful owners Lucy and Richard Seppings. Lucy shared her plans for her conservation project which is in progress on a wonderful site in Broome near Bungay, walking us around the beautiful landscape filled with fauna and flora. Lucy is also a trained florist and has a large cutting garden which she uses for her bouquets. The super evening ended with a lovely glass of wine or elderflower cordial. We are keen to return in the near future to see the progress Lucy has made. Our July meeting is traditionally a garden party or a cream tea. This year, we're delighted that Jane Bastows is hosting a garden party for us. She has very generously opened her garden for us and is also providing the refreshments. Our party will have taken place as you read this.

We do not meet in August but we are back in September. The September meeting is as usual in Wenhaston Village Hall on Tuesday 6th at 7:30pm. We'll be welcoming New Beginnings from Bungay who will be demonstrating for us. We offer a very warm welcome to anyone who'd like to join us for the evening. We do not have an annual membership fee, it's just £5 on the night which includes refreshments. We meet once a month on the first Tuesday. We'd love to see new faces all the time, but if just one or two sessions catch your eye, just drop in for those. We are very informal. A note for your diaries: The October meeting is our charity night for the Halesworth branch of Cancer Research UK. There will be a selection of stalls and refreshments and is open to absolutely everyone, so please drop in to support us. For more information, please contact Jackie Chenery on 01502 478401.

housing design. • The identification of key movement routes to increase levels of walking and cycling. • A requirement for electric car charging points. The Steering Group received a clear message that the community wanted such matters addressed and the Neighbourhood Plan, through the policies and actions proposed, supports activities and actions in the town that will go towards the climate change goals. The Town Council is already looking at the Plan proposals and taking forward now what it can. In June they agreed to £10,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy being spent on improving the open spaces around town in ways that residents have said they want to see – planting more trees, installing benches and bird boxes and other ways to improve biodiversity - making the spaces pleasanter places to use and enjoy, as well as contributing to the climate change goals. Next time we will let you know more about what the Plan can do for the town as well as update you on the next stage of the Plan’s journey.

we will let you know. Then after that, it will be Referendum time! We expect this to be sometime in the Autumn. The Steering Group has been given a government grant to help us make sure the people of Halesworth know about the Plan and what it can do for the town as it gets closer to the Referendum. The two big benefits of having a Plan are more money for the town as a bigger percentage of the Community Infrastructure Levy comes directly to the Town Council and secondly the policies and proposals contained in the plan will be used by East Suffolk Council to determine any planning applications in Halesworth. But did you know what the Plan can do to address people’s worries about climate change? Here are some of the things the Plan includes. • The protection of two Local Green Spaces, three open spaces and roadside verges from development. • Support for the creation of a new nature reserve. • Protection of heritage trees. • A policy encouraging low energy and energy efficient

Physical copies are also available to view at Halesworth Library, and East Suffolk Council Customer Service Centre, Marina Centre, Marina, Lowestoft, NR32 1HH (during opening hours). The Consultation period ends 5pm 3 August 2022 Comments on the plan can be made online, by email planningpolicy@eastsuffolk. gov.uk or post to East Suffolk Council, Planning Policy and Delivery Team (Neighbourhood Plans), Riverside, 4 Canning Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk NR33 0EQ. The subject heading should be ‘Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan’ and if you are referring to a particular policy or paragraph you should give the details. When the Regulation 16 consultation ends the Plan will go forward for Examination, timing being dependent on the responses received and whether more changes are needed. The examination is carried out by an independent planning expert, appointed by East Suffolk Council. Whether they will come to Halesworth and hold meetings and interviews or just read the documents we don’t know, but

Another big step forward on our way to having a Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan took place on the 22 June when East Suffolk Council announced that our draft plan had reached Regulation 16. It means there will be another consultation period before our Plan is submitted for independent examination. Copies of the Neighbourhood Plan and supporting documents are available to view at: https://www. eastsuffolk.gov.uk/planning/ neighbourhood-planning/ neighbourhood-plans-in-thearea/halesworth-neighbourhoodarea/ The Plan and the Consultation Statement can also be found in the Neighbourhood Plan section of the Halesworth Town Council website. The Consultation Statement is a report setting out all the consultations, surveys, meetings and associated leaflets and posters that the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group used to gather your views and the evidence needed to back up the planning policies in the Plan. Appendix S of the Statement is where you will find residents (anonymised) comments and the Steering Group’s responses.

150 years of learning and fun in Bramfield! It has been a fortnight of celebrations for the people of Bramfield as they not only celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, but it was also the 150th anniversary of Bramfield Church of England Primary School, which first opened in 1872. To celebrate 150 years of learning, the school invited former pupils to visit the school last Monday (7th June) to see how it has changed and to share their thoughts and experiences with current students. Head of School, Linda Ashford says: "We were so excited to have former staff and pupils from as far away as Portugal join us. Our oldest guest was in his 90s and he entertained us with his memories of school life in the 1930s."

Mrs Allen (Executive Headteacher) dressed as Queen Victoria, with pupils from the school

Halesworth… Established for over 50 years We stock a selection of animal, equine, pet and poultry feeds and bedding, country clothing, riding and workwear, garden supplies including garden essentials and tools, seeds and plants

Visitors were given a tour of the school by current students, and there was an exhibition where visitors had opportunity to see pictures of the school through the decades. There were also some old logbooks, including a log of punishments dating from the Victorian era that featured naughty behaviour like 'stealing the school rabbits' which had a punishment of four strokes of the cane! Former school Headteacher, Cathryn Benefer, also attended saying: "The older children were excellent guides for the visitors, and everyone was so very welcoming." The next day the school 'went back in time', experiencing what it would have been like to go

to school in Victorian times. Pupils and teachers dressed up in Victorian clothing and had a visit from 'Queen Victoria' (Executive Headteacher Vicky Allen in fancy dress) as well as a very strict Victorian schoolteacher! "The teacher was scary!" said pupil Sam Batey. "But it was a great way to learn about history." To end the week with a celebration, on Friday, parents and carers were invited to the school to see the exhibition, as well as the new sports and outdoor learning zone that the school is currently fundraising to complete. There was also a range of activities from traditional school games to a hunt for the royal corgis in the secret garden. The children then

entertained the visitors with music, song and dances through the ages, before the anniversary cake was cut and shared. To find out more about our new outdoor learning and sports facility, or make a donation, visit: uk.gofundme. com/ and search for 'Operation Outdoors'.

J.N. KITCHENS

The Sutton Hoo Ship's Company is based at The Longshed in Woodbridge. Since 2018 the company has engaged 90 volunteers and 3 staff to run the company and build a replica of the Sutton Hoo Ship that was found at Sutton Hoo in 1939 and is now a National Trust visitor site. The volunteers and staff are building the full-size replica, fundraising, and sharing their work with as many visitors, both in person and virtually, as possible.

The ship's backbone, or keel, has been laid which is a beautiful piece of sculpture. The 3D form of the keel structure changes continually as you move your eye from bow to stern, highlighting just how technically capable our Saxon ancestors were. The Shipwrights are currently dealing with an issue with one of the underloutes which are the curved extensions attached to the straight central keel. Here the timber has shrunk and deteriorated meaning that the

section will need to be replaced. Luckily an area of land owned by the Woodland Trust in Hainault has three potential oak trees with the correct curve needed for the replacement piece. Nowadays boats made from wood tend to be laminated and steamed but the Saxons had to take advantage of the naturally grown curve of each tree. While the underloute is being replaced, the 20+ Production Crew are working on cleaving oak trees into wedges to convert into planks

for the hull so if you call by in a few weeks you will hear the steady sound of metal on metal as the iron rivets start to be fitted. Although if you want to see the keel before it is encased with planking it would be good to visit as soon as you can. Visitors can check when our Crew Mates are there to greet them and show them around, or small groups can book a tour with a guide to tell them all about the project by visiting our website www.saxonship.org

since 4.0C on 10/06/2013 and a frosty 1.4C on 04/06/2012. High pressure did build after the cool and unsettled first week of June being the catalyst for a partial drought which produced only one rain day in sixteen during period 9th to 24th. Furthermore, after the 8th to end of month consistent mainly pleasant daytime warmth of 20C or more was achieved on all but five days which themselves only narrowly missed that level. The memorable very warmest day recorded, 32.4C on the 17th was the second-best June recording on my entire record (only 33.0C on 07/06/1996 exceeded this and also the warmest day of any since 33.5C on 07/08/2020). The maximum warmth of the day was notable because of its duration, from early afternoon which had only marginally cooled to 30C by 8pm. It was a culmination of moderated hot air imported from

Spain and the South of France where extraordinary temps of around 43C had been noted this early in the season. Our maximum was nearly 7C higher than the next warmest day (25.6C on the 16th) and 12.6C higher than the following day when the cold front which cleared the hot air had passed through. The cooler air also produced the second highest daily rainfall total of the month (0.40") with thundery activity. Combined with the rain recorded on six of the first eight days (0.68") and the accumulation of 0.70" during the last two days the majority of the 1.93" month's total had been recorded over a total of 11 rain days. This amount was again lower than long-term average, the fifth month out of six this year (only February has been wetter than average). This was also the driest June since 2018 and brought an end to a run of three successive wetter-than-average June totals.

great job! We are now looking forward to visiting the Camel Centre on 14th July, where we will meet the animals and have the usual cup of coffee together. On August 11th, we will have a garden meeting at Bridge Farm, Chediston where we will have the chance to view the equipment available for disabled people and may also be treated to a demonstration of a Rollator especially designed for Parkinson's. We opened our doors at 58 Thoroughfare on 4th June and have been so grateful for the welcome we have received from everyone who has popped in, as well as our fabulous fellow businesses. ‘We’ are Rhoda and Ailsa, and our mutual passions are plants, crafts, and nature. We started the Green House as we wanted to create a plantthemed shop that doubled as a unique ‘indoor green space’, to be used in a variety of ways by a variety of people. We believe that bringing people and plants together is the route to happiness! We sell houseplants, pots, and a selection of nature-themed crafts by talented local makers: from succulents in vintage planters, to birds cleverly crafted from cutlery to jewellery made from recycled leather - we have a unique gift for almost everyone! We are keen to minimise our impact on the environment, so

the vast majority of our plants are UK-grown, and we also have a ‘re-filling station’ for household cleaning products at the back of our little shop. We have carefully designed The Green House to be a relaxing place for community use, so are planning a range of workshops and wellbeing groups, as well as offering it to existing local groups who would like somewhere different to meet. Profits from shop sales go towards making our workshops accessible and affordable so as many as possible can benefit. We currently have workshops on foraging, botanical watercolour, meditation as well as many others coming up. Please pop in and see us to find out more, have a browse or just have a chat - whether you are a plant enthusiast (yet) or not! We look forward to meeting you.

The Green House opens in Halesworth

Join us on a mysterious isle where an opportunity arises for an exiled ruler to try and regain power. Prospero has been unjustly deprived of his Dukedom and those responsible are on board a ship foundering in a storm – a tempest which he has conjured for the purpose of bringing them to the island. Once ashore, lost family members are sought, love struggles against adversity and murderous plots are hatched. Prospero seeks to regain his Dukedom – but would he, in turn, free those who do his bidding, the original inhabitants of the island? Come and see Circle 67’s shortened version of this truly timeless play which, like “a sea-change into something rich and strange” has borne so many interpretations over the centuries. Our one-hour version is still packed with everything from Ariel’s songs and Caliban’s curses to Gonzalo's utopian rhetoric and Prospero's sublime speeches. Come to your favourite castle or pub garden; admission is free and basic seating is provided. If you enjoy the production, please give generously when a hat is passed round at the end. We are touring from the 22nd to 31st July to our favourite local venues, plus a few new ones! Please see our advert for details. Circle 67, as our name implies, was founded in 1967 to bring highquality and accessible drama to our local area. New members are always welcome. If you would like to join Circle 67, please contact us via our website.

At the June meeting in the Pear Tree Centre, we welcomed four new members. We are always ready to accept new members, just come along to one of our meetings or telephone the number at the end of this report. We are a friendly group of people who give support to those diagnosed with Parkinson's and their carers. We enjoyed the talk by a representative of Redwings Horse Rescue and learnt a great deal about their work in looking after and nurturing ill-treated or abandoned horses. They do a

very emotional. It's not been an easy run this year, but we've had lovely weather and each year the run has got more and more pink. The people taking part are from all walks of life and all ages, all on different makes and models of tractors. Everyone knows someone who has had cancer and the support means so much because all we can do is raise money to help with research. What else can we do." This year, 29 ladies new to the run took part including Ebony Ayton who was taking part with her mum, Joanne Grimmer and grandmother, Pam Grimmer. Ebony said: "To start off with it was really scary but once I got going it was really lovely. There's lots of people cheering all the way round, even on the back roads. It does make it feel nice, it's so sweet when you see people cheering and whistling." Ebony's mum Joanne Grimmer who lives in Great Moulton, was taking part in her 17th Pink Ladies' Tractor Run. As well as joining in with the event she fundraises throughout the year, she said: "It's been amazing as always and Ebony has done brilliantly. The event is still so unique even after all this time and people want to support it."

Pam Grimmer has taken part in every run since it started, she said: "I've been into tractors for a long time and Annie rang me up one day and said "I've had an idea. What do you think about doing aladies tractor run?" I said: "Yeah, if you can get enough ladies!" and it's grown from there. "The people in Harleston were great. People decorate their gardens and in one a banner said, 'I beat breast cancer." Joanne Grimmer said: "It's good to have that reminder as you drive round because you remember why you are doing the run. The reason behind our motivation is that cancer is relentless, and everyone is affected by it. We've lost ladies who have done the run previously and this is why we can't stop

raising awareness and money for Cancer Research UK's breast cancer appeal." Annie Chapman said: "As with any event of this size, it cannot be achieved without the support of many people. I'd like to thank everyone involved, all the drivers, all the people who lent tractors, the land-owners, the many marshals, collecting ladies and anyone else who helps to make this event happen, it's a large team effort!" The monies raised from this year's event will be announced in September. To donate online, please visit: fundraise. cancerresearchuk.org/unite/pinkladies-tractor-road-run-2022. The iconic Pink Ladies' Tractor Road Run returned in style as a convoy of 112 decorated tractors wound their way through south Norfolk and north Suffolk. The event (which is now in its eighteenth year) is edging ever closer to raising £1m in aid of Cancer Research UK's breast cancer appeal. Crowds packed the route while family and friends joined the ladies at a picnic lunch in the sunshine at Gawdy Hall meadow. People were cheering along the route in towns, villages, laybys and gardens. Houses and businesses were bedecked in pink bunting, banners, flags and many supporters were dressed in headto-toe pink. Organised by Annie Chapman BEM, the annual run started at Thorpe Abbotts Airfield before passing through Brockdish, Upper Weybread, Harleston, Pulham St. Mary, Rushall and Langmere Green. Annie was driving one of the oldest tractors on the run (a 1950 David Brown Cropmaster) which had recently been repainted. She said: "Harleston was incredible, it really choked me up driving through the town. It was packed and it was just wonderful to see, people are incredibly supportive, it's been

“I’m looking to list my house for sale. Does it matter that you don’t have a shop in town?” Thank you for your question, it is one I am regularly asked when I am carrying out valuations. It is also something we were curious to monitor internally. When we decided to set up our Halesworth Hub, ATTIK in the ATTIC, there were very few town centre premises available, and whilst putting out feelers, the exact same day we were informed of the penthouse of The Cut Arts Centre becoming available to rent, and it really did seem to be more than a coincidence, so we decided to trial that space and monitor if we felt it hindered our growth. Having formerly worked for an agent on the High Street, when I could see its value as customers would visit the branch to register their details and collect paper brochures, this was some years ago and the landscape of consumer spending is rapidly changing, be it on a pair of shoes, a car, a holiday, or

your home. People now have all of the information they need at the swipe of a finger. My husband and fellow director says, ‘We do have a shop window, and most people carry it around in their back pocket or handbag’. Many studies have been carried out with a view to comparing online agents versus high street agents, although, I wouldn’t say that we fall firmly in either category. We are without a physical shopfront, nonetheless, we do have a beautiful welcoming space where our clients, local and from out of the area, can and do on occasion, come in and discuss with privacy, their financial and property affairs. We do find that this is really quite rare and more often is our elderly customers and we often treat them to a cup of tea or coffee in the Cut Café. The statistics gathered from Rightmove show that we are the leading agent in the IP19 postcodes for new instructions and sales, statistics we are hugely proud of, and

to maintain this level of business takes a lot of hard work, which all of our team put in. Determination alone is not enough, however, and we attribute our success largely to moving with the times. It takes a wealth of local knowledge, being a part of the community, marketing across all of the property portals, designled marketing, property staging, a current social media strategy, and all of these must be authentically executed and combined with good old-fashioned estate agency, building a verified database of buyers, accompanying viewers, being proactive and not relying on incoming leads, tenacious negotiation skills, and for us personally being empathetic to our client’s individual situations and delivering the same levels of passion, be it a one-bedroom flat or a million-pound house that we are listing.

To be moved into you new home by Christmas, Rightmove are suggesting you need to have your property listed now! Book your FREE, no obligation valuation with us today.

divorce, not the date of separation. You should note, however, that unlike marriage, a divorce will not automatically nullify a Will so you should think about those as well. Finally, Forensic Accountants excel at seeking out hidden assets, determining the real, not claimed, value of assets and tracking down concealed wealth. Their skills are particularly useful when the one who initiates the divorce has had the time to hide assets and

gains arising to be deferred but as this would cause the recipient to have a larger potential CGT liability when they sell the asset, both parties may not agree to sign the hold over election anyway. The former marital home can also cause a CGT liability. If one party has left the former marital home, they now only can claim an additional 9 months of automatic residence for CGT exemption. This can quickly cause a chargeable gain to start to accrue. Everyone does have an annual CGT exemption, but this may be quite small against the potential gain. Additionally, if a liability exists on disposal, you must also report and pay CGT online to HMRC within 60 dates of completion. (Main Residence Relief is extended where Mesher Court orders are concerned.) The situation is better for Inheritance Tax where the general tax-free exemption for spousal transfers stops on the date of

“No Fault Divorces” were introduced on 6 April 2022. Since then applications for divorce have soared by more than 50%. With everything else that is going on during a divorce, don’t forget to think tax. Some of the ways tax is affected include: Income tax is largely only affected with the ability to transfer surplus allowances from one spouse to another. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is affected in several ways. The taxfree inter-spousal transfer relief is only possible in a tax year when the parties live together as a married couple at some point. However, they remain as connected persons (requiring assets to be transferred at market value) until the date of divorce. This can cause unexpected liabilities where the parties occupy the same residence but not as a married couple. For business assets, a hold-over relief claim could be signed allowing any

Remarkable Military Hospital – talk given by Wendy Moore on 20.06.22 via zoom Wendy started the talk, after being welcomed by our Chair Chris, by giving her working background as a journalist by training - concentrating on nonfiction medical and social history. She explained that her interest in the Endell Street Military Hospital began when she came across a painting of an operation which showed all the participating staff to be female. Enquiries revealed the history behind the hospital. When World War One began in 1914, women doctors came forward with offers of help and were soon told by the British military hierarchy to “go home and sit still”. Louisa Garrett Anderson and Flora Murray, both qualified doctors, suffragettes, and life partners, did no such thing. When war broke out men signed up to fight and women worked in male roles. More than sixty female doctors volunteered but were rejected. Their qualifications were exactly the same as those of male doctors, but they were only permitted to treat women and children. There were one thousand women doctors at the outbreak of

war. Louisa, a surgeon, and Flora, an anaesthetist, were keen to serve their country. Eight days after the outbreak of war they offered help to the French Red Cross, raised money and in six weeks went to France, taking a team of female doctors and nurses. They formed the Woman’s Hospital Corps and were given an empty luxury hotel in Paris, brand new and had never been opened before. In forty-eight hours a 100bed emergency hospital was set up treating British and French direct from the frontline. The staff had no experience of military surgery and had not treated men before. The hospital was very successful, and a second military hospital set up in Wimereux became the first hospital to treat men under military conditions. ESMH had a library, theatre, light airy wards with an open courtyard. The men did knitting and sowing. They suffered air raids and food shortages. Louisa and Flora were hard taskmasters. After the war ESMH stayed open treating Spanish flu victims, finally closing in December 1919. The female staff members were expected to go back to treating women and children again or to go abroad to work.

The new year starts with the July draw – and yes you can join now to be included just contact Wendy on 01986 872490 or email wendmend@gmail.com The tote raised £1,200 towards Hall costs this past year. Dates for your diary:

The Annual Christmas Craft Fair will be on Saturday 19th November – open to the public at 10.0am. To book a stall (for just £12) contact Wendy as above. There has been a problem with our plumbing for some time now. Its over 40 years old and needs updating – but the cost is somewhere in the region of £20,000. On Saturday 8th October our campaign to raise the funds starts with a 40’s/50’s dance. Like the Jubilee event with a return of the Swing Band that everyone loved. So, here’s your chance to join in with the fabulous dancers who come with the band as they will be doing a learning set! Get your dancing shoes on, grab the retro gear, and come along. Tickets will be just £10 per person. A tasty Burger will be included in the price – and yes, the Bar will be open. Starts at 7:30pm. Contact Wendy for Tickets – as above! We are tempted to call it the Flushing Dance! All proceeds will go to the project. Bingo still as popular as ever – and we are so grateful to “the loyal gang” who turn up every other Thursday. Starts at 7:30pm come along and join in – you might win! August dates are 11th and 25th.

ATTIK Estate Agents with offices in Dereham and Halesworth has teamed up with NFU Mutual Halesworth Insurance Agency to launch an online charity auction to raise money for East Anglian Air Ambulance’s (EAAA) Blood on Board appeal, called the Spring into Summer Charity Auction, as part of ATTIK’s pledge to raise £10,000 for EAAA between 2021 and 2022. All funds raised from the auction will go to the EAAA ‘Blood on Board’ appeal to help permanently carry blood products on board every mission. This will allow the administering of blood on-scene and in-flight giving patients the best chance of surviving to hospital. It costs over £72,000 per year to fund this vital lifesaving service. Just one example of how carrying blood on board saves lives, was back in November, when 17-year-old Harry Fisher was travelling along the A140 on his motorbike when he was involved in a near-fatal collision with a van. When the EAAA crew arrived at the scene, the team weren't sure if Harry would make it to hospital due to the extent of his injuries, specifically the amount of blood he was losing and that both of his lungs had collapsed. Dr Jeremy Mauger, who was there on the day, said: “Given the amount of

blood Harry had lost, without a blood transfusion his odds of surviving to hospital would have been significantly reduced.” Catherine, Harry's mum, said: “We’re just so grateful that Harry got the treatment he needed to get him to hospital. That was the first major hurdle to overcome. It’s been an incredibly long recovery for Harry and he still has a long way to go but we are getting there. All those weeks he was in a coma were simply unbearable, but he had a fighting chance and has been fighting all the way.” To make the auction happen to support the appeal, together

ATTIK Estate Agents and the NFU Mutual Halesworth Agency have contacted businesses across Norfolk and Suffolk to donate prizes between now and Friday 15 July, which is when the auction closes at 7.30pm and a charity reception will take place at The Cut in Halesworth. So far, the auction Lots include items such as a guided paddle tour of Brancaster Staithe donated by NorthShore, a signed Norwich City football shirt donated by Yellow Brick Mortgages and even a cheese making experience donated by Fen Farm Diary, just some of the prizes in the auction that are

up for grabs. The auction is open to anyone, although if you are under 18 years, you must gain permission from parents or guardians to use the site and comply with the terms and conditions. Lots can be found online: www.jumblebee.co.uk/ springflingcharity auctioninaidofEAAA If you are a business interested in donating an auction prize for the Spring into Summer Charity Auction, contact Kate Mamo-Lewis on 01362 694800 or email: kate@ATTIKestate agents.co.uk.

pain and grief. In 2002 she said, ‘I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad.’ Those words were not pious words about a vague faith that sits in the background. It was and is her foundation. It has been said of her that she possessed a ‘deep vibrancy of her faith’. For the last two years, I have faced my own challenge, having received a diagnosis of cancer.

Because I have known His presence with me for over 70 years of my life, to go to be with Him is like going to the home of the One who loves you more than anyone else possibly could. I do not fear death. For me, it is the doorway into His permanent, abiding presence. At the age of nine, I simply asked Jesus Christ into my life to be my Lord and Saviour – and He came in and has walked with me ever since. I

would not change that for all the treasures of this world, and if the challenges of life take me closer to Him, then so be it. In what may well be my final article for this paper, I close by saying that my deepest prayer for all who read these words is that they too will come to know Jesus Christ as the Foundation of their lives,

the Faithful One who will never disappoint you and never leave you or forsake you. He stands at the door of your life and knocks, but the door handle is only on the inside; you alone can let Him in. www.halesworthcommunity church.org John Sparkes

lives so that when the storms rage, all is not destroyed. We have considered the fact that Man’s best endeavours are not sufficient. We are not God, but we need Him. It isn’t about digging deeper into human resources but letting the insecurities and pain of our struggles drive us into the ‘cushion of the sea’ into the heart of the God who loves us. As C.S. Lewis put it, ‘We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.’ When pain and struggles expose our fears and insecurities, it is easy to shout back at Him in anger rather than hearing the truth that He wants to walk with us through those dark times. That is the good news – He is not yet removing the unpleasant things of life but wanting to lead us to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ so that we experience His loving presence as He walks with us in all our circumstances. The Queen has borne the burden of seventy years of public duty and responsibility. Recently, the loss of her beloved husband and internal struggles within her own family will have brought their own deeply felt

It has been quite a weekend. We have all been reminded of the Queen’s loyalty to God and the nation over these last 70 years. That’s a long while! She has served faithfully, and even when she has faced her challenges, she has been unwavering. I believe there is a reason for this to which we will return. A submarine was being tested and had to remain submerged for many hours. When it returned to the harbour, the captain was asked, "How did the terrible storm last night affect you?" The officer looked at him in surprise, "Storm? We didn't even know there was one!" The sub had been so far beneath the surface that it had reached the area known to sailors as ‘the cushion of the sea.’ Although the ocean may be whipped into huge waves by high winds, the waters are never stirred in this area. Over the years, I have written many articles for the Community News, and a constant theme has been running through them all. Yes, the value of virtues such as kindness and determination, integrity and determination, and many others have all been present, but another theme undergirds them all. We have written about the need to build deep foundations to our

Planning your Wedding

After two years of uncertainty, weddings are back on and lovedup couples who have faced delays and postponements to their plans can now look forward to finally planning their big day! Here we aim to offer a bit of advice and help for things to look at and consider when planning and organising a wedding. Choosing the perfect venue is surely at the top of any newly engaged couple’s list and the decision as to where to hold your wedding can be quite a daunting one. It is very easy to get over excited and fall in love with the a venue when you go there for the first time. It is important to be sure of your exact requirements and consider various options

before committing. Here are some useful tips to consider before choosing your wedding venue. Put together a list of venues with a few options to visit and try to include some different types of venues, hotels, country manors etc as they all offer something a little bit different. • Estimate the number of guests and work out your budget. It is important to have an idea on the number of guests you are thinking of inviting. If you are planning on inviting evening guests, then consideration needs to be given on how many people the venue can cater for both during the wedding event itself and also in the evening. You

at, various times of the day. will need to know roughly how when it is due and also if it Venues can look different at many people you plan to invite is refundable. It is also worth different times. It is worth and how much you can spend checking if there any discounts available or special packages visiting during the day and before you start to draw up on offer. then again after dark. your list of potential venues. • Find out if the layout fits • Be sure to check out what • Talk to as many people as you can who are associated extra costs there are. Some your needs. If you’re having venues offer the complete your reception and wedding with the venue. Hopefully you wedding package, while others will have met the manager on ceremony at the same venue, is there enough space for both may charge extra for items like your first visit, but be sure you of the events? cutlery, table cloths, chair speak to any on-site wedding • Check if the venue provides covers, decoration, plates and coordinators or catering accommodation. A few points worth considering when choosing your wedding venue: • How many guests can the venue hold? For the actual wedding ceremony and also additional evening guests. • Is it possible to hold both your ceremony and reception at the venue? • Will there be onsite accommodation for your guests. If not, how close are the nearest accommodation options? • Pricing: What’s the price per head? Is there a minimum spend? Are there any set packages or discounts on offer? • Is the catering in-house? You might want to sample a meal at

the venue before making your commitment. • How easy is it to get to the venue for your guests? Is there sufficient parking. • Does the venue offer great photo opportunities? • What are your decor options? • What extras are charged for? • What is the protocol for letting your outside suppliers in and out on the day of the wedding? • How flexible is the venue? For example, are there any restrictions in terms of what you can bring in and use (this is a good question if you have something specific in mind) Of course, the most important thing is that this is your day – do things the way you want to do them and most of all enjoy it!

Halesworth Town Juniors F.C end of season

Neil Ketteringham has been appointed as the new Headteacher at SET Beccles School.

SET Beccles School welcomes new headteacher with huge progress and growth, becoming the 'most improved school in East Anglia' in 2016. Neil Ketteringham said: "I'm proud to be joining SET Beccles as Headteacher next term and I look forward to getting involved in all aspects of school life. As a local resident myself, I have seen SET Beccles grow and I admire their ethos for inspiring and nurturing every individual student. "I am passionate about the school's community spirit, and I will look to establish new relations and reaffirm SET Beccles as a top choice, where students leave our school with the best education alongside confidence and experiences that will guide them through further education and beyond."

Mark Barrow (CEO, Seckford Education Trust) said: "We are delighted to appoint Neil Ketteringham as the new Headteacher at SET Beccles, he has a firm knowledge of the local area and an impressive background in supporting schools to reach their full potential. We believe his experience and passion will be a great asset to the Trust." SET Beccles, on Castle Hill, provides secondary education for students aged 11-16 in the Beccles and Bungay area. It is one of five schools in the Seckford Education Trust and was one of the first Trust schools to open in 2012, alongside SET Saxmundham and SET Ixworth. referees and anyone who feels that they could offer their help would be greatly appreciated. We can put you through a referee course and pay you for each match. If you are interested, please contact Claire on 07935109049. We have continually been fighting for green space again this season, we have had meetings with East Suffolk Council, and have built relationships with the FA and HCSL to try and preserve and make use of as much of the green space available in Halesworth that we can. During this season we have worked alongside the senior club and have valued their support at meetings, and we hope to continue to build this relationship, working alongside one another. We are continually working on pitch space and will carry on doing so to secure the future of the junior club. Without volunteers giving up many hours of time and dedicating themselves to their roles we would not have such a thriving Junior football club. Thank you to each and every manager and coach for their dedication and commitment to the children and the club. Our committee condensed down to nine members last season, and this has worked well, each and every one playing an important role in keeping the club as successful and well respected as it has become, Thank you all for all of your efforts. Kathryn Bullen has once again continued her hard work and dedication to the club, not only her work as secretary but all the other tasks that are undertaken and going above and beyond to keep the Junior club running smoothly.

Thank you to Mark Coby for all his advice and guidance on maintaining the pitches and equipment and Andy Hadingham for trimming back the hedges at Westhall. Many Thanks to David Harvey for cutting the Westhall playing fields and Trevor Chenery who dedicates hours of his time cutting the pitches, marking them out and always ensuring all pitches are the best they can be. We also had some great sponsorship come in end of last season and we continue to be grateful to Broadway Colours, Halesworth Golf Club, DB Renovations, Hetty’s Little Copy Shop, SJ Geomatics and Gowing Engineering for their continued support. We also had a brand-new storage shed donated and erected by Redz of Beccles. Thank you to all. We have a thriving club and this is down to everyone working together, managers, coaches, committee members, players and parents. Thank you all. To round off the season we had a great presentation weekend with a BBQ and disco for the U10s and U11s on Saturday night and an afternoon of fun with BBQ and summer games for the U7s and U9s on Sunday. It was fantastic being able to all get together for presentations again and everyone had a great time. Thank you to everyone that made this possible. We now look forward to a relaxing few weeks of summer before we all start again next season for what we hope to be another thoroughly enjoyable season. Grassroots is where it all begins. Armed Forces Day Aldous and Mr. Brian Hunter, the Chairman of the newly revived RAFA Branch at Lowestoft who joined us for the day. The event for all parties was a great success. We would wish to thank all those members of the public and visitors to Lowestoft for their kindness and generosity. President Brian Vousden, RAFA Beccles and Southwold. Further information on RAFA is available on: www.rafabecclesandsouthwold. wordpress.com.

The cruise to Walton Backwaters is a perennial favourite for Woodbridge Cruising Club members. Thanks go to Graham and Julia Bryant for organising this cruise, which had twelve boats sailing in company. SADs (safe arrival drinks) were held on the first night in Titmarsh Marina, followed by a Safari Supper, where members enjoyed meals on different boats. The next day was fine and sunny, and some members enjoyed a fascinating wildlife tour around the Backwaters, this was followed by the club barbecue and music. Friday saw members enjoying Viking Kubb game and a meal in the Harbour Lights restaurant. Cruising in company, and the social activities is one of the best reasons for joining Woodbridge Cruising Club. The sailing season is now underway, with the well planned summer cruise programme with voyages to new harbours and well-loved favourite destinations. Members are looking forward

to future cruises, with voyages to Lowestoft and Southwold, Ramsgate and Europe and more. Weekends at the club bar, sitting outside with wonderful views of the river are a welcome break, and the Wednesday BBQs are always popular. Why not join the cruising club. The club website: www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org has full details and new members are welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht, or are keen to start sailing.

Citizens Advice East Suffolk was launched on 1st April 2022, following the merger of Citizens Advice Leiston, Saxmundham & District, Felixstowe & District and North East Suffolk. The discussions about the merger had been ongoing over the past couple of years to review efficiencies of the organisation and the services available to the public. The main benefit of the merger is the ability of Citizens Advice East Suffolk to extend its services and provide a more comprehensive and accessible service.

Chiara Saunders' appointment as Chief Officer of the new organisation was confirmed this week. Chiara joined Citizens Advice as a Volunteer Advisor prior to being appointed Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Leiston & Saxmundham on 1st March 2019. Before that, Chiara had worked in the commercial and investment banking sector, following which she pursued a career in education as a teacher and school librarian. Chiara said: "I look forward to the challenge of developing and future proofing Citizens Advice

On Saturday, 25th June, the Beccles Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) attended at Royal Green, Lowestoft and accepted donations from the Public for "Wings Appeal", the conduit whereby local RAFA Branches collect monies for our Armed Forces Charity to help provide support for serving and veteran RAF personnel and their families who may be in difficult circumstances. This year on the day, we were delighted to also be joined by our MP for Waveney, Mr. Peter

defeated by Gorleston in a close, hard-fought match. Reaching the semi-finals was a great achievement for both teams. Well done for all your efforts. Paul Bullens U10s reached the final of the Trophy Cup and played at the nest, everyone was proud of their amazing attitude and the way they battled to the end and accepted defeat graciously. They should all be very proud of themselves as we were supporting them. Well done Paul Bullen and Trevor Chenery for getting them there. Justin Hatcher has taken on managing the U11 Tigers along with Donna Brinded and Darren Goodson and were awarded with the Respect award at a presentation held at The Ocean rooms, Gorleston. This is a fantastic achievement, as attitude of the players has been recognised and is also of paramount importance. We wish both U11s teams every success as they now turn to U12s and venture into their first season of league tables and competitive football. Gary Todd is once again bringing through the reception and year 1 children, who are now enjoying their training sessions and continuing to make the club grow. We look forward to these youngsters forming our new U7S in September. If any year one children would like to join, please contact Gary on 07817137792. Without such dedicated Managers and coaches giving up their free time and volunteering to run the teams, match days and training would not happen. This also includes running the line and refereeing. The Seckford Education Trust is pleased to welcome Neil Ketteringham as the new Headteacher at SET Beccles. Mr Ketteringham joins the secondary school at the end of August, ready for the start of term in September, but he has already begun meeting students, welcoming new Year 7s and getting to know everyone across the school community. Mr Ketteringham joins SET Beccles following an established teaching career at schools across the country. Neil relocated from a school in Oxford to north Suffolk in 2013 and has most recently held roles as Head of Department at Benjamin Britten Academy in Lowestoft, and Deputy Head at Alde Valley Academy in Leiston where he supported the school

This season has been the first full season back for Halesworth Town Juniors without being affected by lockdowns due to Covid. A few of the games have been cancelled due to other teams being affected by it but on the whole, we are back on track and have seen a whole season of great football by many aspiring youngsters. We have had seven teams this season all of which have thrived due to hard work and dedication from all. I would like to Thank Westhall community for continuing to welcome us to their village and allowing us to have five of our teams there, without this space we would not be able to continue playing and to grow as a club. Our two U11s teams have also managed a full season back at Dairy Hill and the club has settled back into enjoying the game without too many outside influences to deal with. All seven teams have continued to grow and improve over the season. The two new U7s teams were taken on by Marcos Allen and Dan Barber and have settled in well to their first season, they have had some great team performances and attitudes. Seeing the U9s form another team during the season was a great achievement, Thanks Jud Chenery and Joe Allen for encouraging this by taking on extra children in your training sessions and ensuring the smooth transition to games. Jud Chenery and Matt Bates had a great cup run with the U9 Jaguars and reached the semi-final and took it right to the edge but were defeated on penalties to Solebay. Paul Bullen, Gary Todd and Trev Chenery also reached the semifinals with the U11s and the team gave it their all but were

First grading at ICENI Taekwondo Dojang a great success!

Important changes to the Hoppa bus service

Well done to all those who took part in ICENI Taekwon-do's belt grading on 20th June 2022, with an excellent 100% pass! The grading was hosted by instructors Mr and Mrs Bedingfield, with Mrs Bedingfield conducting most of the proceedings. A big thank you to GTUK Regional Examiner, Mr Clinton Gillett, 6th Dan from Bungay, who closely watched the students as they displayed their Taekwon-do skills which included: techniques, patterns, Korean terminology, sparring, step sparring, self-

Since the Hoppa returned to normal service after the pandemic, we have seen a big drop in passenger numbers in the afternoons. Consequently, we have decided to suspend afternoon services except on a Tuesday. This is a disappointment to us, but we will keep the situation under review. If demand returns, we hope to reinstate the afternoon services on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Hoppa has regular stops at the Co-op, Bank Corner, Middle Car Park, Old Station Road, Chichester Road, Holton Bus Stop, Harrison's Lane, the Surgery, The Limes, Dukes Drive, Kennedy Avenue, Durban Close, and Jubilee Court. But you don't need to reach a proper stopping point to get on board. Simply signal to the driver

defence and board breaking. We are pleased to say that Mr Gillett was very pleased with the standards being achieved and a 100% pass rate was awarded. Mr and Mrs Bedingfield would also like to thank their black belts and senior grades for volunteering their help on the night, and also to the staff at The Venue for their assistance before and after the grading. The grading shows the continued success in the rebuilding of the club since the Covid lockdowns, which decimated the previous membership from 60

down to 12 over the two years of restrictions. Only hard work and persistence from the instructors and core students kept the club going, at the time it looked to be an impossible task to get the club back to where it is today. Indomitable Spirit comes to mind! ICENI Taekwon-do always welcomes new students of all ages and abilities. So now would be a great time to join the club with three months to prepare for the next grading.
