queues for both. Meanwhile, in the gazebo there was a very talented face painter, provided by the Council, who gave many children, and quite few adults, with some wonderful painting of union jacks on their faces. It all added to the festive atmosphere. The Molly Dancers arrived and entertained the party goers and then invited the public to join in. Many did, including Reverend Dominic Doble and Reverend Gini Williams. The Choir, led by Rev Jon Sermon, sang the National Anthem and Jerusalem along with other well-known songs. Around this time, we were joined by our MP, Therese Coffey, who was on a whistle stop tour of her constituency. Therese joined in the singing and spoke to a number of party goers. Cllr Wagner had set up a quiz for the children to find a photo of an orb, sceptre, crown and throne which had been placed on trees in the park. There was a quiz sheet which accompanied the hunt and all those who completed the sheets, received a prize.

The Jubilee Picnic in the Park on Saturday the 4th of June was a great success. This came about because of the working together of town councillors with the Halesworth Volunteers and many other helpers, to plan and bring about such a successful day. The day started early with Cllr Wagner and three generations of

The Children’s fancy dress took place. There were some wonderful costumes. We had some splendid Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses and a Postman Pat. The children who took part, ranged from 2 to 10 years and all received a prize. Congratulations to Mums, Dads and Grandparents who produced such creative costumes. The superb Jubilee Cake was produced by Farmhouse Bakery and was cut by the Chair of the Council, Cllr Rosemary Lewis, at 3pm and by 4 pm it had all gone. Many thanks to everyone who attended, those who lent a hand and the Cllrs on the Working Party, Cllrs Lewis, Wagner, Took, Fleming, the Town Clerks; Nick and Phillippa, Jill Reece and all the Halesworth Volunteers, who have very deservedly just won the Queens Award for Voluntary work 2022! Throughout the day, everyone was very friendly and happy. It was noted how polite the children were. It was good to see so many friends and families enjoying the sun and companionship and celebrating the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty. Kings, Queens and even Chairs of the Council all have to make way for future generations eventually, so in the spirit of this event, which was enjoyed by young and old alike, she lent her chain of office to a future candidate. Congratulations to Durrants and Hetty’s Little Copy Shop for winning joint first prize in the best dressed shop/business window. Festival of Suffolk Torch Relay Preceding the picnic in the Park, the festival of Suffolk Torch relay came to the town on the 28th May. The rickshaw team was met by the Chair and the Town Clerk. The two children from Edgar Sewter School, who were chosen as the torch bearers, started the journey traveling in an electric rickshaw which followed the Clerk on his bike from Hill Farm Road through to the end of the Thoroughfare. There was a magnificent turnout of residents in the Thoroughfare including many from local shops and businesses. The organisers were very impressed with the town and the enthusiastic welcome given to them by all.

Charity golf event takes place at top Suffolk Golf Course

He shot nett scores of 68 and 69 for a total winning score of 137 over 36 holes. As well as the help from the eight local sponsors, a donation from each entry fee was collected to support both The Suffolk Punch Trust and The Suffolk Horse Society and a fantastic total of £1,240 will be split between both local charities. "We were thrilled to attend another lovely day at Ufford Park Golf Tournament. Colony Aspall, our Suffolk Punch gelding came along to join in with the day's fun. We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Aldous for their continued support of The Suffolk Punch Trust and the Suffolk horse." said Tracey Pettit, The Suffolk Punch Trust. 158885

Fiona Fleming, President of The Suffolk Horse Society said: "We were delighted to once again be asked by Colin Aldous and Ufford Park to represent The Suffolk Horse Society, at The Suffolk Punch Golf Tournament, especially with Ufford being the birth place of the first Suffolk horse stallion, "Crisps Horse of Ufford" born in 1768". The Suffolk Horse Society is the official charity for the preservation and promotion of the Suffolk Punch Horse.

which have strong connections with the village of Ufford and we're very grateful that the majority of generous sponsors have been retained from 2021. My wife and myself were raised in rural Suffolk and both of our fathers were full-time Suffolk Horseman, working the land before tractors started to dominant around the 1950's. Ufford Park had the opportunity to support the "Suffolk Horse" by sponsoring a foal at The Suffolk Punch Trust, which like every other living Suffolk Horse could trace its pedigree back to Crisps Horse born in Ufford in 1768. Unfortunately, our foal died prematurely, however, this new event creates another opportunity to support this endangered rare breed and Suffolk icon." The event was held on Thursday 2nd June 2022 and 13 Suffolk Golf Clubs were represented. The competition was open to golfers with a maximum Handicap index limit of 8.9. A presentation took place in the evening and trophies and prize money were awarded to the both the scratch and nett winners, plus vouchers for the overall top five places and best AM/PM rounds. Best Gross score and winner of the Gold Suffolk Punch Trophy was Patrick Spraggs. He shot gross scores of 74 and 72 for a total winning score of 146 over 36 holes. Best Nett score and winner

On Spring Bank Holiday, Thursday 2nd June, Ufford Park Woodbridge hosted the second 'Suffolk Punch Trophy' golf competition to help raise funds for the Suffolk Punch horse, following last year's success. The event (founded by owner and keen golfer, Colin Aldous) attracted elite golfers from across Suffolk to play two rounds at the award-winning 18-hole, par 71 course, nestled in the Suffolk countryside. Ufford Park has previously hosted various prestigious golf tournaments including, The Rett Classic, Best Western National Seniors and Sky Televised Euro Pro Tour. Colin said: "Back in 2019, we felt the time was right to introduce a new annual golf competition, and after significant research and consideration, we decided on a Regional Annual Order of Merit event, which could support an appropriate charity. Unfortunately, Covid delayed our plans for the event, but we were finally able to hold the first Suffolk Punch Trophy event back in May 2021. We've managed to increase sponsorship for 2022 from eight local companies; AllGlass (Anglia) Ltd, Amarinth Ltd, Booth Tarmacadam Ltd, Hopkins Homes, Foskett Farms, GAH Refridgeration, The Burgess Group and T Humphreys Removals; all of

Why not try hopping on the Hoppa! There are still many people in our town who are not aware that the Hoppa is a service that can be used by anyone. If you sometimes feel like catching the bus home after a shopping trip, or need to get into town to meet friends, why not hop on the Hoppa? If you're not sure of the service schedule, you can pick up one of our new timetables, which are available at the Library, Edwards, The Angel, Spar and Halesworth Volunteer Centre. You can also get a copy from the Hoppa when we're at one of our many stopping points. We have stopping points all around town, including The Peartree Centre and Surgery, Co-op Store and the Town Centre Car Park.

We're still hoping to see more passengers using the Hoppa on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons, but, if numbers do not increase, we will be forced to stop those services due to the high cost of fuel. In other areas, we have broadened some of the services we offer to the community, so we're always keen to welcome new volunteer drivers. If you're interested in helping support us please call the office on 01986 875900. Finally, we'd like to give a big thank you to Halesworth Town Council for providing a grant for the continuing work of the Hoppa.

The fully electric New MG ZS EV Like more?

On Friday May 6th, Transition Woodbridge gathered their wildlife gardeners together for an uplifting meeting. They had sent ahead fascinating pictures of their wild features and with tea and biscuits, we enjoyed a 'show and tell' session to inspire us all. Attendees were members of our Local Wildlife Corridors project, or were people curious to find out more. The project, which encourages people to 'wild up' their spaces was inspired by Felixstowe's Community Nature Reserve, and aims to provide routes ("corridors") by which animals both large and small can move around without hindrance or danger. Built up areas can be difficult to navigate, but by

joining up to create biodiversityfriendly spaces close together (such as in groups of gardens), we allow animals to move more freely. This is hugely important for many animals, insects, bats and birds to be able to move from one habitat to another. By planting wildflowers or the old 'cottage garden' varieties, they have provided rich feeding grounds for beneficial insects, as well as helping to keep these plant varieties from extinction. We enjoyed the evening so much that we're planning to meet again in the Autumn and we may organise an 'Open Wildlife Gardens' event in the future. This ties in well with the Woodbridge Town Council's

Halesworth WI report Members listened as Anna Mickleburgh told us of the details of the National Federation resolution which will be voted on at the NF AGM in Liverpool in June. The resolution was to support more help for women and girls with ASD and ADHD. Males are more likely to be diagnosed with autism and so receive help, girls are under diagnosed and

so struggle to gain support. Our members voted unanimously to vote for this at the AGM. We then had refreshments and some entertainment while encouraging members to inspect and buy something from the wide variety of items displayed in the silent auction. We were reminded of our pick up points for our June outing.

might like to join our Citizen Science group, which has evolved from this project. We wanted to take the data coming from the online surveys and see what is actually happening and use the data to guide us to improve local conditions further. Inspired by Felixstowe Community Nature Reserve project again, We have created two initial groups studying bird boxes and fruit trees. It's early days and we need more gardens to make results more meaningful, but at least we have made a start. In the future, we may well be able to communicate our findings in wider contexts, making information from Woodbridge useful nationally and maybe even internationally as Felixstowe have done. New members are welcome. You don't need to be a scientist, all you need is a curious mind, a basic knowledge of computers and an interest in improving conditions for wildlife in our area.

declared climate emergency and pledge to make their three large open areas, namely, Fen Meadow, Kingston Fields and Elmhurst Park, more wildlifefriendly and to improve them as carbon sinks. They have planted trees and thickened hedges, as well as held back on the mowing in some areas. And so, together, we aim to make Woodbridge and Melton, and surrounding villages, a haven for wildlife. Our corridors will span between the parks and the surrounding countryside, completing the picture. Does this sound like your kind of thing? Do you have a piece of garden or courtyard you could give over to wildlife? Or are you busy doing it already? By going onto our website: www. transitionwoodbridge.org.uk/ local-wildlife-corridors/ you will find out more information and a survey you can fill in, showing what features you already have, eg: a pond, bird boxes, a log pile. You might be surprised to find how many boxes you can already tick and if you decide to join us, you can let us know whenever you add another feature. In order for our corridors to be effective, WE NEED MORE GARDENS! So if you live in our area, please join up! If you're not a gardener, you

We have a limited number of secure floodlit spaces available in our unit. CCTV inside and out. Flexible, long or short term availability. For further details, please call Jon

After six long years, the Men's Shed has finally got its forever home. Now based at the Otter Trust and our future is assured. Our new shed is 60 feet long by 20 feet wide and includes two workshops and a breakout area. The building is insulated, has electrics throughout and is soon to be accessible to wheelchair users and that includes a wheelchair height bench. This is a great opportunity for its ever growing membership who, until 18 months ago, met just on Friday mornings in Broome Village Hall, then found a temporary home in a barn at Earsham Park Farm meeting 10am-12 noon Monday's and

Wednesday's whilst continuing their Friday meeting. Ditchingham Men's Shed has brought a lot of support for many of its members. Fighting loneliness and social isolation of men (and women) in the Ditchingham/Bungay and surrounding rural areas. Mental health support to men is so important. Men are very poor at sharing their feelings and many believe it's wrong to cry, but the Shed gives people a safe space. Men may meet other men for a pint perhaps, but it's not the sort of friendship where they can be open and honest. The national Shed association say that in the Shed men "Stand shoulder-toshoulder", not face-to-face. A while ago, a Shedder said to me: "I was my wife's carer, cook and cleaner, I did the laundry and when she died I had no role in life; it was as if the carpet had been pulled from under me, I was so lonely. Coming to the Shed, having a chat, a laugh, making and mending has given

me back my purpose." Bereavement and illness affects men quite badly; as they seem not to have the coping strategies that ladies might have. Coming to the Shed doesn't mean that you have to make or mend, that's up to you; the important thing is that you come along. At the Shed, we make bird boxes, bird tables, planters and a wide variety of other items all made from recycled materials. We also have many skills such as metalwork, wood working and wood turning, all sharable skills. Finally, we need to thank the District Council, our local and district Councillors and the Otter Trust for their continued support. We'd also like to thank our members who, without their support we would not be where we are today. The Shed opens: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-12noon. Come along and give us a look, there's a free cuppa and a warm welcome.

Halesworth Dementia Carers’ Fund (Charity No. 11770477) Notice of A.G.M. This will be held on Monday 11th July at the Angel Hotel in The Stables from 2.00 – 4.00. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served at 3.00, after the AGM. Monthly Report The Ladies’ Lunch Club met again on 17th May. £60 was raised for our funds. The next lunch will be at The Angel Hotel on 21st June, 12.30 for 1.00. If you would like to come along please contact Arlette Smith on 01986 469101. Jill Denny, the leader of the Melody Makers Choir presented our Chair, Teresa Fyfe, with a cheque for £65 at a recent rehearsal. Jill continues to sell her hand-made cards at our bimonthly film matinee and at various outlets through the town, and we are very grateful to her for her continued support. Activity Groups The Community/Memory Café and Seated Music and Movement Groups have both

got off to a great start. Both are being very well supported and are providing a wonderful outlet for out families. The Singing with Friends and Art and Craft groups continue to be popular and well supported. All our groups are free of charge and open to people with memory problems and their carers. For more information about any of these activities please phone Teresa Fyfe on 01986 875641. Film Matinee Our film matinee in July will be “The Duke” starring Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. It will be on July 20th at 2.00pm – look out for posters around the town. White Swan The White Swan are very graciously holding raffles for HDCF, and during the month of May their patrons have raised £180. Very well done, and many thanks. John Wood

Wenhaston Village St. Mary's Handbell Ringers, Halesworth Show Teas and delicious cakes will be on hand for those who need to sustain those in need of sustenance. It is not too late to take part, if not with fruit and veg then with baking or preserves (cakes etc. to be covered), or perhaps the photography section. Under 18’s are encouraged to snap a portrait – I’m sure it doesn’t have to be human! Schedules are still available at Wenhaston Village Hall. Don’t forget to deliver your potato in a bucket at 10.30 on the morning of the show. Bring your scarecrows to the carpark so that they will be on hand to keep an eye on things. So, you see, there is life after the Jubilee!

Volunteers needed get in touch as this will allow more young people to join the section and learn the value skills scouting can teach. If you are interested in any of these roles or have a young person that would like to join, please email halesworthscouting@gmail. com for more information.

our summer bookings continue with this focus, before we turn to our Christmas programme. Do get in touch if you'd like to book us for your group/organisation. We look forward to hearing from you. Or... why not pop along to one of our practices on a Tuesday afternoon in the Catholic Church Hall 3pm-4pm. New members always receive a warm welcome. Contact Linda on 01986 798397 or email: l.sherman654@ btinternet.com for more details.

Thank you from Halesworth Events Management Many thanks to everyone who supported our recent cake stall in Halesworth, whether you made a cake, bought a cake, made a donation or just showed your appreciation for the work we do. A total of £134 was raised which will help with the cost of putting up this year's Christmas lights. As mentioned previously, we're hoping this year to put on an event to mark the switchon. Staging an event will need planning, organising and fundraising. If you have an idea or suggestion of what you'd like to see happening on Saturday 19th

November (when the lights are officially switched on) or would like to join our group, then please come along to our AGM which will be held on Wednesday 20th July at 5:30pm in the Stables at the Angel. We are still looking for a way for Father Christmas to travel safely up the Thoroughfare, any suggestions welcome - Perhaps you have a cart or small carriage which could be pulled by elves or an open top car that he could travel in and be seen by the many children who enjoy seeing him every year. 184619

Could you spare a couple of hours a month? Due to an expansion in numbers since COVID restrictions have been lifted 1st Halesworth Scouts are looking for volunteers to join their executive committee. You do not need to commit to attending weekly meetings with young people (although are always welcome to do so) but would help the committee with planning, finances, fundraising, recruitment, maintenance of the hall etc. We also need additional Cub leaders, if you are available on a Thursday evening please

We were delighted to be part of Halesworth's Jubilee celebrations, when we hosted an interactive workshop at the library. An amazing number of people turned up to 'have a go' and learn a little about the art of handbell ringing. Special thanks to Jason, David and Martina who made guest appearances and thank you to the library staff for making us so welcome and providing refreshments! Our programme celebrated patriotic and traditional music;

After all the excitement of the Jubilee celebrations life may seem rather flat – fear not. On 24th July it will be the Village Show. Finally, we are able to celebrate the 25th Annual Show. Besides giving the show a donation, Wootons will have a stall full of their lovely plants. The allotment holders will be selling some of their produce. Blyth Woods, The Commons Group together with the Swift Action Group will have stalls showing what they have achieved over the last few years. Suffolk recycling will be on hand to give us advice and guidance on what to do with our perceived rubbish. In addition to this there will be a display of art work by the children from Wenhaston Primary School.

Ipswich Town "Strange New Worlds" by David Penrose "Transfixed" by Peter Nixon "My Sketchpad has a Hole in it" by Jackie Moore Supporters Bungay Camera Club: Abstract and Surreal AGM The spring months of April and May have been a busy time for the members of Bungay Camera Club. There has been a full programme of club meetings, which has included an evening of studio lighting with 2 female models, an interclub competition against the clubs of Beccles and Framlingham, (which Bungay Club won by single point) and a presentation of creative photography using flash, by the club chairman Richard Roberts. In addition to club meetings, there have been visits to Norwich Riverside and the Cathedral, Beccles Quay and River Waveney at sunset and a further trip to Shingle Street, on the coast. The final club meeting in May was the 3rd club competition, which had the theme ‘Abstract and Surreal.’ Club members submitted 43 images in total, comprising colour and mono prints and digitally projected images (dpi`s). The judge for the evening was Frank Blyth, a member of Lowestoft Photographic Club, who is an EAF listed

judge. Commentating on the competition and the judged images, Frank said `Although I thought the subject theme would be daunting and would stretch my judging abilities, I was looking forward to viewing the images of the Bungay Club Members. Having judged at the club on several occasions I was pleased with the variety and imagination of the prints and digital images on show. There was a very high standard with some excellent prints in the Colour and Monochrome sections. This gave me a very difficult task to discuss and score but as a judge but it made for a very enjoyable evening. ` Members who were awarded the top scores of 20 or 19 points were – Colour Prints -20 points to Victor Schwanberg, `Moneyflowers` and Ken Warne, `Book Worm` 19 points to Peter Nixon, `Rotten to the Core` and Holly Stranks, `Altered Ego`. Monochrome Prints -20 points to Jackie Moore, `My Scetchbook has a Hole in it` and Andy Wilson, `Swirls, Whirls

and Twirls`. 19 points to David Penrose, `Strange New Worlds`, and Ken Warne, `Grey Man`. Digital Images -20 points to Peter Nixon, `Transfixed` and David Penrose, `Pagan Forest`. 19 points to Andy Wilson, `Alex In Fungiland`, and Jackie Moore, `Radiator Reflections in the Bathroom Mirror`. Future club evenings will include a presentation on Wednesday 8th June, by Permajet, featuring their papers and image printing, a talk by local landscape photographer for the National Trust Justin Minns, on ways to improve your images and a presentation on Astro and Aurura Borealis photography by Duncan Arnald. The popular Annual Exhibition & Fair will once again be opening the doors at Broome Village Hall on Saturday 3rd September from 10am. For more information about Bungay Camera Clubs programme of events and how to come and join us for 2 free taster meetings, please visit the club web site – bungaycameraclub. com

Our thoughts and very best wishes go to our committee member Colly for your continuing improvement. It was really nice to welcome back our president Dr Clarke and his wife who came to support us and were lucky enough to win a prize on the raffle. Also thank you to everyone who made cakes or savouries for our cake stall which proved very popular and sold out very quickly and to everyone who generously provided a raffle prize or who contributed in any way. We are extremely grateful to the following businesses for their very generous support in providing the food for our lunches or fantastic raffle prizes or sponsorship for our event: Halesworth Coop who are always so generous providing food for our lunches, Cleveleys, Spectra, Morrisons Beccles, Edwards Halesworth, The White Hart Halesworth, The Angel,

Our thanks also to EPS Banners, Holton Village Hall and Maureen Took at the Coop Cafe. A special mention to Len and Edna for the "Rowley's Bookshop" sign in memory of Rowley Sharpe which we displayed in the book area at the Spring Fair and will be a regular feature. Thank you to Dick and Janet and Anne and David for everything you do for Cancer Research all year round. On behalf of the committee at the Halesworth Branch of Cancer Research UK. On May 14th, we held our very popular Spring Fair in Holton Village Hall. The day was perfect, even the weather was kind to us this time. So many people came along to support us. Thank you so much to each and everyone of you, as it was down to you that we raised a fantastic £2,089.20. We hope everyone who stayed to lunch enjoyed our new menu of ham and cheese ploughman's (the ham and cheese were donated by Cleveleys) and our homemade lasagna, soup and delicious desserts. Well done to Nikki, Dot and volunteer Jane for serving such lovely plates of food and Phyllis and Margaret with their mouth-watering puds. Thank you to Nina and Eileen for putting together a lovely varied plant stall and it was lovely to see Rowley's sister Helen taking on the book stall and Rowley's brother Alan continuing to help out with the washing up in the kitchen. Thank you to our other volunteers Michael and Jill on Bric-a-brac, Maggie and Felicity on cakes, Michelle, Paula, Molly and Penny who covered all of our raffles between them, Di and Jackie on tombola and our waitresses for the day: Shirley, Diane, Jill and Sue. We couldn't put on an event like this without you all. Thank you so much for

Pakefield Singers are proud to present "Majesty!", a double celebration marking both the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen and the 20th anniversary of this popular choir. The concert includes the choir's first performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass, regal and celebratory in nature and perfect for a grand ceremonial occasion. It showcases both Mozart's inspired choral writing and his instinctive genius when composing for the solo voice. Schubert's Mass in G major has a gentler feel and was composed in just one week by a youthful Schubert but demonstrating his greater musical maturity. A beautiful choral arrangement by choir member, Chris Upton,

Halesworth & Southwold Community News - July 2022 - 15

On the 4th May 2022, we celebrated Joan Morley's 100th Birthday. She had a lovely day with family, friends and the staff at Highfield. Joan would like to thank everyone who came and made it

Green volunteers continue to host their monthly Repair Café upstairs in Halesworth Library on the 4th Monday (2pm - 4pm) of each month (except August). This very successful venture has seen over 60 repairs this year, from electric goods such as toasters and kettles to favourite garments, and lots in between, saving them from landfill and making their owners happy, as well as teaching us all new skills in mending, and having a cup of tea and cake to boot! We are excited to announce the acquisition of an electronic repair kit which will help with mobile

phones and such like. We are looking particularly with people interested or with experience in mending these or laptops. Come and join us for the next one on June 27th and/or July 25th, and dig out something from your mending pile to bring along, preferably with the right yarn, cotton or bit needed for mending. If it can’t be mended on site, we may be able to offer advice on what you can do with it. Donations welcome. If you have skills to offer, please send an email to marion.gaze@ btinternet.com

From

special. HRH Queen Elizabeth II also sent her best wishes to Joan. Money has been donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance in Joan's wishes as it's a charity close to her heart.

After the long lockdown our AGM was held on 16th May and John Wood confirmed as Chairman for 2022/23. Martyn Wilkinson became President for the same period but was unable to be present for health reasons. The only major change was the introduction of a social subcommittee with three former presidents in office. David Prime was handed a certificate on becoming an Honorary member of the club. Club membership was 35, plus 3 non-dining members. Sadly, since the AGM our much valued member John Royce has passed away. His funeral will be at the U.R.C. on 24th June at 1.00pm. Recently we have welcomed a number of new members: Keith Aird, Michael HomphrayCooper, Bryan Leveratt and Irene Thomas. There are two more candidates waiting to be welcomed. At our monthly coffee morning on June 6th we were delighted to see Martyn Wilkinson who received his Presidents medal from the Chairman. Details of our Summer Lunch, with our ladies, to be held at the Golf Club on 18th July are being finalised. We shall also be having our annual summer Tea Party in August, with further details to come. There will also be a relaxing social day taking place in September. It’s all happening. David Prime

Mean temp: 13.75C (56F) in 2022. 10.72C (51F) in 2021. 12.10C (53F) on average. Air frosts: Nil, compared with nil in May, 2021. Rainfall total: 1.46" compared with 2.68" in May 2021. (30 year average: 2.10"). (2022 total - 70% of average). Most rainfall on one day: 0.40" on 23rd. Wind direction (mainly from): South-West 7 days, South-East 6 days, South 6 days, West 6 days and North-West 4 days. Despite the average maximum temp being higher in 2020 and 2011, this was the equal warmest mean temp for May (with 2018 and 2017) since 1992. In comparison, May 2021 was somewhat cooler with the mean temperature 3.0C lower than this month. That was the chilliest May since 1996 and among the ten coolest on my 53 year record. This time, seven of the nine days to reach or exceed 20C during the month were recorded consecutively during week 13th to 19th. It was not until the end of that week that high pressure, a near constant up till then began to erode. During that week also, there were five of twelve nights when the minimum temperature fell no

cool days outside the first three and the last three days of the month. Cool nights (a gardeners nightmare at this time of the year in particular) were thankfully few but the third of three air minimums of 5.5C or less occurred as late as overnight 29th/30th (4.0C). It was another dry month overall. No recordable rainfall was observed from the 8th April to 5th May (28 days) and 12th to 17th May (6 days). On the other hand, the two wettest days (0.25" on 18th and 0.40" on 23rd) which at least provided some much needed moisture helped the month's total to 1.46" or 70% of the long-term average. I have heard reports of much greater totals in surrounding areas on the 31st than the 0.15" eventually noted here in Beccles. This was on a day when rain, thunder and lightning, hail shower, bright sun and a rainbow were observed. However with only 6.28" of rainfall accumulated for the year to 31st May it is still some way behind normal expectation. Spring 2022 (March, April, May) Average maximum temp: 14.8C (+1.3C from average). Mean temp: 10.5C (+1.2C from average). Average minimum temp: 6.1C (+1.1C from average). Total rainfall: 2.92" (50% of average). In almost total contrast to Spring 2021, which was the coldest Spring since 2013. This Spring was the warmest since 2017 and before that 2014. Each month was not only warmer but also drier than long term average. February so far has been the only wetter than average month this year. Despite rainfall only half of long-term average, this was only the driest Spring since 2020 but before that 2011.

“All we do may be undone, but love stays loved and songs stay sung” On Saturday July 16th, Halesworth Community Choir presents an evening of beautiful songs celebrating diversity and humanity in the world we share under the stars, in a tribute to the late Larry Gordon (1945–2021),

co-founder of numerous musical ensembles, including Northern Harmony, and important to the natural voice movement and open access choirs. Venue: The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth, IP19 8BY. Time: 7.30 pm. Tickets: only £10 from The Cut Box Office Email: boxoffice@thecut.org.uk; Tel: 0300 3033 211.

News from Millenium Green Yes they’re back – and yes they do seem to prefer to leave their droppings all over the track if at all possible… they also tend to gather at the tool containers just when we want to get tools out... but the work they do for us is beyond price. They keep the grass short for the more fragile wild plants and small mammals (which the owls like) and leave the volunteers free to begin mowing and stacking the meadows that aren’t grazed, up near the Folly. These cows are already less curious than when they first came on, and you can gently encourage them to move aside so that you can get by. Do keep your dogs under close control. Elsewhere on the Green, the Orchard is a wonderful place for a picnic. We recently celebrated a birthday there for Peter Goodchild, one of our longest-serving and hardest-working volunteers. The Orchard is stocked with East

road to a successful career! Last month Halesworth and District U3A members enjoyed an entertaining talk full of Essex jokes and amusing memories. It was also rich in warmth and wisdom. However, hidden inside was a very serious and important message from a highly successful businesswoman; A message that every employer large or small needs to think about and take on-board. Christine Beedle MBE looked back on her memories of starting out as a cleaner and progressing to building a highly successful cleaning business employing 900 people and

gaining many accolades. The essence of that success was her genuine appreciation, care and encouragement of her staff. She clearly thought of each of them as individuals whom she knew, and worked to understand their needs. In such an environment the staff give back so much more. Her book entitled "The Essex Scrubber" is now available for all to enjoy. Christine is donating her fee to the Ukrainian appeal of Colchester Centurion Rotary, members of our audience added to this collection. On Tuesday 21st June at The Cut at 2:30pm, we shall hear

Halesworth in Bloom is back!

An update from BACT Here, at BACT community transport, no two days are ever the same. Many of our journeys are for medical, social, shopping purposes. However, this list is by no means exhaustive. Recent requests have been wonderfully unusual. We were extremely proud to have been a part of transporting Gwen Foyster to the Waveney House Hotel for her 100th birthday! Here she is

pictured with our driver, Phil Mitchell. Quite an achievement considering it was her first outing in six years. Happy birthday, Gwen! Last week was a first for us. Whilst trips to the vet are all in a day's work for our drivers, this one was a little unique! Snoophoggyhog the albino hedgehog and Miss Smith were taken for a vet check-up by our

volunteer driver, Mark Todd. All went smoothly (pardon the pun!) and Snoophoggyhog was returned home fit and well. If you'd like to be part of the fun and join our team of volunteer drivers, we'd love to tell you more about the opportunities we have and what is involved. Please call 01986 896896. bactcommunitytransport.org. uk

from Liz Cooper about the exciting multi-million-pound project to develop a National Centre for Gainsborough in Sudbury. The project is nearing completion and we expect to run a coach outing to Sudbury to visit the Centre later this year. There's no charge for U3A members to our talks at The Cut, friends and visitors will be very welcome for a small entrance fee. We look forward to welcoming you there. Please note that there is no U3A meeting at The Cut in July as this will be replaced by our coach outing to Bury St. Edmund's on 21st July.

We’re extremely grateful to Halesworth businesses for continuing to cheer up the town with beautiful floral displays over the past two difficult years. After this enforced break, we will again be looking for an outstanding display to which we can award the Lesley Pyke trophy for Best Business Floral Frontage. We will also be awarding a trophy to the best display by a newcomer business. Judging will take place on Wednesday July 13th.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust

Welcome to Halesworth Library Halesworth

Harleston & District U3A invites you to its July meeting, which will be held on Wednesday 20th July at 2pm in St. John's Church, Harleston. Our speaker is Norma Howell and she will be talking about medical detection dogs. She will explain how dogs can be trained to identify minute

odour changes emitted prior to an emergency and then to alert the person to take preventative action. The dogs are able to detect both physical and neurological problems, and research is currently being conducted into the early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

For further information, please phone Kim Poulton on 01986 788149, or go to our website www.u3asites.org. uk/harleston.

"Majesty!" Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh Saturday 9th July at 7.30pm

LOCAL SERVICES DIRECTORY

A beautiful choral arrangement by choir member, Chris Upton, and well-known masterpieces from the singers' repertoire over the past two decades by Handel (Zadok the Priest), Beethoven and Mendelssohn are included to make for a grand jubilant concert. Conducted by Director of

Music and founder of the choir, Vetta Wise, with organist Tim Patient, the concert will take place in the awe-inspiring surroundings of Blythburgh's church on Saturday 9th July at 7:30pm. Tickets are £12.50 (under 16 free) from The Halesworth Bookshop, 42 Thoroughfare, 'Take Note Music', 11 Grove Road, Lowestoft, or by phoning 01502 5733733. Volunteers The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. We have had the most amazing start to June 2022. Thank you for all your kind words and lovely messages about the news that we have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This Award is all about the dedication of our wonderful volunteers, old, new and not so old and our staff team. The Award reflects our near 40 years of providing support in Halesworth and beyond. But is also about how we came together during the Pandemic. It is also about the Churches, Halesworth Town Council and all the Parish Councils, local Charities like the Pear Tree Centre, Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund and so many others. Special thanks to Hact, for being such stars back in 2020 and 2021 and now in 2022, getting people out and about once again. We want to thank everybody who help during the long months of the Pandemic. You really made a difference, shopping, being Brilliant Bakers, creating Souper Saturday. Also, huge thanks to all the people and organisations that supported us through donations and gifts. You all made this award possible. Thank you. A new look for Halesworth Volunteers. Do visit our new website www.halesworthvolunteers.org. We have given ourselves a little refresh, changed our name but not how we support local people in our lovely rural community. Our Car Service is now working flat out to get people who cannot travel independently to their important appointments, especially medical and hospital appointments. Our Isolation Buster befriending programme is growing every day and we are still organising trips out and tea parties

for our older residents. Just visit the site or give us a call to find out what we offer. Halesworth Community Larder Our partnership project with St Mary’s Church, the Community Larder is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am at the Church Hall. Now we have had some rain, you may find you have rhubarb coming out of your ears, just bring to the larder and swop it for something you need. Or if things are a bit tight, come down and get what you need. Our friendly team are there to support you. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Thanks to the wonderful students and team at Suffolk New College for hosting a brilliant Jubilee Bake Off at the Halesworth site. Our Ladies and gentlemen enjoyed a delicious tea, made by the catering students including delicious sandwiches and scones. They then judged 3 fabulous cakes, declaring Rhys a well-deserved winner after a tight contest with Lleo and Lyra. The afternoon ended with a competitive round of bingo, with bingo calling supremo, Councillor Tony Goldson. Thanks to all for a very special day. Special thanks to Halesworth Town Council for organising a wonderful picnic in the Park. It was great to be able to bring a Hoppa bus full of locals for a sit down tea. Maureen Took provided lovely baking including beautiful Jubilee cakes, Kay made some jubilee jellies and Kay, Helen and Karen made the sarnies. Huge thanks to Rosemary, Jackie, Maureen and Anne for making it happen. And finally, don’t forget the monthly Wellbeing Lunches on the 1st Tuesday of the month at Chinneys. Everybody is welcome, just turn up between 12 and 2pm or ring Karen on 875600 to find out more.

Woodbridge Cruising Club The sailing season is now underway, with the well-planned summer cruise programme with voyages to new harbours and well-loved favourite destinations. Sailing (or motor-boating) in company is surely one of the best reasons for joining WCC. The Alde and Ore cruise was a fantastic voyage, and the first cruise 'over the bar' of the season. Members were made very welcome by Orford Sailing Club and Aldeburgh Yacht Club, and thanks also go to Mark and Clare Richardson the cruise captains. A highlight of this cruise was the peaceful night spent at Snape, with only the booming of bitterns echoing over the reed beds. Over 100 members enjoyed the Jubilee Barbecue and the Platinum Jubilee Parade of Boats on Friday 3rd

June, with 14 boats fully decorated sailing past the club, (which was festooned with bunting), and receiving the salute from the Commodore, Stephen Lines. This was an amazing sight, visible from the riverside walk, and enjoyed by onshore spectators as well. Thanks to Graham Bryant for organising this and everyone else involved in the sail past.Members are looking forward to future cruises, the next being Walton Backwaters in June, followed by Lowestoft and Southwold, Ramsgate and Europe and more. Why not join the cruising club? The club website (www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org) has full details and new members are welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht, or are keen to start sailing.

We would like to thank everyone for the support they have shown us over the period of the Queen's Jubilee.
