which the bells are rung) started in the late 16th century. There have been bells at Halesworth since 1440, the oldest and loudest musical instruments in the town. Learning to ring is tricky, about as hard as learning to drive a car, with some light to moderate physical exercise thrown in, but new ringers are quickly seduced by the combination of intellectual and physical challenges and the nationwide camaraderie: You can turn up at almost any tower in the country with bells, announce you are a ringer, and you'll get to join in. Ringers do not have to be churchgoers (most of the Halesworth band aren't) although ringing for church services is part of the deal as we get to use a couple of hundred thousand pounds' worth of equipment free. We have recently lost four of our best young ringers who have found employment or further education elsewhere, and we cannot now, without help, manage all eight bells at Halesworth, so we're looking for new recruits. Anyone who'd like to learn more about what we do can Google: www. bellringing.org, or email: halesworthbells@gmail.com to find out what goes on locally. Or just come along on 2nd June. Simply Stunning Flick & Son sponsors the successful Heritage Coast Run
light, improved security lighting outside, and CCTV. As a result, we are in high demand for birthday parties, weddings, Christenings, wakes and all sorts of social occasions. The Committee is made up entirely of volunteers from different backgrounds and meets once a month. We all bring our own strengths and attributes to the group and have some fun at the same time. The thing that binds us together is that we love being part of the village community and thrive on enabling our residents and farther-flung locals to come together to enjoy a good time and catch up with friends and neighbours. It would be wonderful to see even more of you at our events! Better still, why not join the Committee? There are only six of us and we will have a couple of vacancies after the next AGM at the end of July. We are a friendly and lively bunch, and any help or skills you can offer would be very gratefully received. If you are interested in finding out more about anything in this article, hiring the hall or joining the committee, please drop an email to holtonandblyfordvillagehall@ hotmail.com. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and we hope to see you soon.
Sunday 1st May at 8am saw 300 energetic runners gather in Thorpeness for the annual Heritage Coast Run. Sponsored by us, the Flick & Son team were out in full force with nine runners taking part in the 10k and Half Marathon routes. This fantastic event, organised by the Aldeburgh Triathlon group had everyone keen to get round fast as the smell of bacon, sausages and burgers sizzled in the air. Raising money for charity each year, with main charity sponsored this year being the Knodishall Cancer Research Group, we’re certain that this event will only continue to grow in popularity, so don’t forget to look out for next year and get involved. Paul Gray, Chief Executive Officer at Flick & Son comments, “It was brilliant to see so many people and their dogs down at the pavilion on a beautiful Sunday

morning. I was so proud of our team and everyone that took part for fun, managing to get themselves round the course and some achieving incredible times that they should very pleased with. We have now decided to not only continue to sponsor the Aldeburgh Triathlon but to enter two teams and I have even been inspired to get myself fit to do the swim. It really is great to be able to support these wonderful events along with others in our community and we look forward to the many events coming up this year organised by amazing people giving up their time so that others can enjoy.”

For those who don’t know me, my name is Hilary Garner and I am the current Chair of the Holton & Blyford Village Hall Committee. I thought I would write about what we do and how we function in a bid to spark your interest either as a hirer or as a potential committee member. The most rewarding thing we do is host a variety of events during the year including Bingo every fortnight and Big Breakfast and the Pop-up Pub every month, plus our craft fairs in Spring and Autumn. Pre-Covid we also arranged a number of larger events such as the Classic Car Show & Fete, Burns’ Night, a Gin Festival and an Autumn Supper, which were all very well attended and great fun. We are fortunate to be supported by several regular hirers, such as a Music & Movement group, Indoor Bowls Club, Pop Chorus, U3A Ukelele Group, two Badminton Clubs, Chediston Art Group, Halesworth Dementia Care, Halesworth Parkinson Group, U3A Wine Group, and Cancer Research. The hall is a registered charity, and all profits are ploughed back into keeping the hall in tip-top condition. Thanks to the hard work of the Committee in recent years, the hall has excellent kitchen facilities, a refurbished stage with new curtains, a redecorated meeting room, new doors and windows all round, including fire doors with glass panels to bring in more natural

Pear Tree Centre throws open its doors J.N. KITCHENS
SIMPLY UNBEATABLE
CREATIVE DESIGNS • BESPOKE MANUFACTURING • CRAFTSMEN INSTALLED
Please call us to arrange for your FREE, no obligation design and quote. Established in 1980, we have unrivalled experience with thousands of quality kitchen installations throughout Norfolk and Suffolk.
Now Open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10am - 4pm
People from east Suffolk and neighbouring areas are being invited to find out more about the free services offered by the Pear Tree Fund, meet its friendly staff and volunteers and enjoy refreshments and live music at a special open day. The Pear Tree Centre, in Bungay Road, Halesworth, will throw open its doors on Sunday 15 May. During the celebrations, Lowestoft Chorale will perform British choral music from the 13th to 20th century from 1pm to 3pm, while one of the charity’s founders and former trustee Barbara Kell will officially open Richard’s Garden, which is dedicated to the memory of her late husband, at 1pm. Richard Kell was a wellknown local GP and chair of Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund, the Pear Tree Fund’s predecessor, for 18 years before retiring from the role in 2017. He died in July 2019 of motor neurone disease at the age of 64. The garden has been created in his memory as a tranquil space in which visitors can relax
and includes a striking piece of artwork by Suffolk sculptor Brian Alabaster, who was one of Richard’s friends. Barbara said: “It is so sad that Richard had not been able to see the completion of The Pear Tree Centre, but my family and I are honoured that the garden has been named in his memory. “Richard was passionate about the outdoors, walking and wildlife, and loved nothing better than pottering around in our garden. He would have loved the calm, tranquil ambience of the space created by Edward Flaxman and his team at Studio 31.” Kevin Vaughan, chief executive of the Pear Tree Fund, said: “We are really excited about this open day and being given the opportunity to throw open our doors to our local community. We’d encourage as many people to come along as possible and find out more about the wide range of free services we provide to people with life-changing illnesses and long-term health conditions, together with their
families and carers and those who have experienced a bereavement. “This includes everything from a cup of tea and listening ear to help with wellbeing, group support, information and advice and sessions with our qualified counsellors and complementary therapists. We also offer social welfare advice about areas such as benefits and support with digital literacy, and work closely with the voluntary sector, community groups and partner charities to put the right help in place to meet the needs of the whole family. “This is a great opportunity for us to showcase some of the fantastic work carried out by our team and volunteers which is making a real difference to local people when they need it most.” Everyone is welcome to drop in to the open day, which takes place between 11am and 3pm. Alternatively, you can find out more about the support offered by the Pear Tree Fund or to donate to the charity by calling 01986 899655, emailing info@ peartreefund.org or visiting www. peartreefund.org

Update from Halesworth Volunteer Centre The Queen's Platinum Jubilee We are getting very excited about the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Halesworth Town Council is organising a 'Picnic in the Park' on Saturday 4th June. As part of the event, HVC will be holding a Tea Party at the picnic for our older residents, especially those who cannot really manage a blanket on the grass. There will be tables and chairs and a special tea with treats from Maureen and sandwiches by HVC. Our lovely friends at HACT are laying on a bus to get you there and back. Just phone the office to book your place and find out more. We are also absolutely delighted to be working
with Suffolk New College Halesworth Campus. We are co-hosting a special Jubilee Bake Off on Wednesday 25th May. Students from the College will be baking delicious Jubilee Cakes and we need to find some judges. If you were born before the Queen ascended to the Throne and would like to enjoy a delicious tea and do some serious cake judging, just call us on 01986 875600. The Community Car Service The Community Car Service is getting very busy so please give us as much notice as you can if you need to get to your medical, social or hospital appointment. Our Community Car Service is open to people
who can no longer travel independently. Our drivers use their own vehicles to get you out and about and charge mileage at 45p per mile. We would be really grateful if you could pay cash, particularly for local journeys. To find out more, do call Helen or Kay at the office on 874290. Halesworth Community Larder Huge thanks to all those people who donate to our Community Larder. We are so grateful for your support. It is not just our lovely local shops, farms and businesses but also the individuals who give us gifts in kind or donations. Thank you all so much.
The Community Larder is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am. Do pop in, you always get a very warm welcome at the Larder. Tea Parties and Trips Out Huge thanks to team at HACT for helping us get people out and about. The lovely people at the Pear Tree hosted a special tea party in their wonderful venue. We then had a very busy trip to the Factory Shop at Wrentham. To find out more about tea parties and trips out, call HVC on 875600. And finally On the 2nd of June something will be changing at HVC, but please do not worry, everything will be staying exactly the same.

Are climate change projections really based on trustworthy scientific analysis? How can scientists confidently differentiate between natural climate cycles which take place on our planet over millennia, and those climate changes which maybe man made? Those questions were answered at a thought-provoking meeting of Halesworth and District U3A on Tuesday 5th April. Our speaker was Chris Bell (Forecasting Director at Weatherquest, Lecturer on Meteorology at the UEA, and occasional weather presenter on BBC Look East). He described how scientists have taken measurements from deep in polar glaciers laid down over millennia which demonstrate the climate fluctuations and cycles. He also showed how solar energy from our sun is distributed differentially over our planet. We heard about the various influences on our climate including sun spots, volcanoes, fires, ozone and carbon dioxide emitted by livestock in particular. Such greenhouse gases create a

We are living in tumultuous times. Whoever thought we would witness another evil and cruel war in Europe? The cost of living is spiralling, and we are still experiencing many consequences of the pandemic that has engulfed the world. At a personal level, unwanted situations can invade our lives and shake us to the core, broken relationships, loss of a loved one or a reminder of our own mortality. We can encourage one another with strong and positive words, but is that enough? Do we reach a point where it dawns on us that human resources have their limits? The story is told about Albert Einstein, the brilliant physicist of Princeton University, in the early 20th century. Einstein was travelling from Princeton on a train, and when the conductor came down the aisle to punch the passengers' tickets, Einstein couldn't find his. He looked in his jacket pocket, in his trouser pocket, he looked in his briefcase, but there was no ticket. The conductor was gracious: "Not to worry Dr Einstein, I know who you are, we all know who you are, and I'm sure you bought a ticket". As the conductor moved down the
aisle, he looked back and noticed Einstein on his hands and knees, searching under the seat for his ticket. He returned to Einstein: "Dr Einstein don't worry. I know who you are. You don't need a ticket. I'm sure you bought one." Einstein got up and said: "Young man, I too know who I am, what I don't know is where I am going." Life is a journey, but do we know where we are going? That simple question raises the possibility of living our lives in a context that is more than just what we can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Many years ago, I invited a Christian singer, Betty Lou Mills and her musician husband, Russell to the Rifle Hall in Halesworth. The Hall was packed as they shared their story, which included the loss of an infant child. I remember Betty saying that the question any parent would ask in such a situation is: "Where is my child now?" Again, there is that default position that there must be more to life than what we see around us. CS Lewis put it well when he said: "The fact that our heart yearns for something Earth can't supply is proof that Heaven must be our home."
It was probably inconceivable seventy years ago, that today, the church would be sharing Pentecost celebrations with a monarch’s platinum jubilee. Well, here we are and on Saturday 4th June we have been invited to participate in the ‘Picnic in the Park’ in Halesworth from 2pm to 2.30pm. Led by the various denominations that make up Churches Together, there will be hymns, songs and prayers
appropriate to the Jubilee. The following day, Sunday 5th June, is Pentecost, when the combined churches will meet at Holton Paddock (in front of St. Peter’s Church) at 10.30am for an open-air service of celebration. Then at 3pm we return to Halesworth United Reformed Church for a thanksgiving service for the life of Her Majesty the Queen. We hope you can join us at one of these events.

On June 5th, the Christian church will celebrate Pentecost Sunday. This is the day when the life of heaven broke into our earthly existence by the Holy Spirit. It is the culmination of all that the life and death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus achieved. It is God saying that we cannot save ourselves by our own efforts in a million years, but to all who receive Jesus as God's gift of life to us, our present existence has meaning and power and purpose. Speaking with people over many years, a clear pattern emerges. As long as we keep ourselves occupied, even distracted, there are certain things we do not have to think about. We can effectively avoid looking at reality - or we could adopt a more constructive and ultimately vital approach and use those things that we hate most in our lives as windows. Instead of fearing to look, if we come with open hearts and minds, we will find a God who loves us so deeply that, whatever challenges we face, we can feel safe and secure in that love. www.halesworthcommunity church.org John Sparkes

just one morning or afternoon a week, it'd make all the difference to our essential local service. If you cannot make a weekly commitment, you could be on our list for occasional community hires around East Anglia. We will train you, here in Halesworth, free of charge. Timetable alert! Unfortunately, the Hoppa is not being used much in the afternoons these days. So, bearing in mind the increasing cost of fuel, we may need to make cuts to the after-lunchtime service. Running empty, or near empty, buses simply may not be viable anymore. If you have any comments about this, we would welcome your input. You can call on 01986 875900 or email: office@hactbus.co.uk.
Barrie Remblance We are sad to report the recent death of Barrie Remblance, who held active roles on Reydon Parish Council both as a Councillor and Chairman over many years. Barrie was born in Windsor Road, Reydon, and grew up locally. Work took him away from the area, but he returned to Reydon in the mid 1990s with his beloved wife Dee who pre-deceased him. Barrie was a lover of sport and was particularly involved in Sole Bay Football Cub. He greatly enjoyed preparing and marking the pitches each week. He was also involved in the project to build the new Sports and Community Pavilion in Reydon, being one of the originators of the plan, and was excited at the prospect of seeing the building come into use later
It is with deep sadness that we share the very sad news of the death of Paddy Flegg. Paddy was a founder member of the HDCF and worked tirelessly to support its work, even when her own health brought many challenges. Our thoughts and sympathy are with her sons Jeremy and Nicholas, their families and all her many friends and colleagues. White Swan We would like to thank the White Swan for all the support they have given to HDCF – especially running raffles and having our collection pot on the bar. We thank you and all your patrons for such wonderful generosity. This month has seen HDCF go from strength to strength as we continue to provide opportunities for people with dementia and their carers. The following activities are all free of charge and are designed
to give informal support for carers who are looking after a loved one with dementia. All groups welcome people with dementia and their carers. Monday:- seated Music and Movement class from 11am to 12:15pm at Holton Village Hall. Tuesday:- Community / Memory Café in The Cut theatre foyer 2pm – 4pm. Wednesday:- Our very popular Singing with Friends. 2pm – 3:30pm at Holton Village Hall. Thursday:- Arts and Craft. This takes place in The Cut theatre. 2pm – 3:30pm. We also have a carers’ support group that meets once a month at the Peartree Centre, and this is for carers only. For information about this, and all the other groups please phone Jim on 01986 875641. There is also a Ladies’ Lunch Club that meets on the third Tuesday monthly at the Angel
Pop-Up Shop
Hotel. 16 ladies attended the lunch in April. They enjoyed a wonderful lunch and also raised £71. The next one will take place on 21st June at 12:30pm. Please contact Arlette Smith on 01986 469101 if would you like to come. HDCF welcomes volunteers who would like to support our work. If you would like to join us please call our Chair, Teresa Fyfe, for an informal friendly chat.

What is the role of the operating partner? When The Campus is built, there will be a sports centre with a gym, studios, changing rooms, a café, several outdoor pitches and extensive landscaping including a trim trail and outdoor workout stations. Subject to funding, we aim for there also to be an indoor sports hall and swimming pool. These will all need administration and upkeep. The building itself will need management, while events and classes inside it will need coordinating and timetabling. The outdoor pitches will also need an organisation to manage their calendars, take bookings and oversee their maintenance. The operating partner will be responsible for these tasks and ensuring that the site runs efficiently for the benefit of the community. What happened to the original operating partner? The charity Sentinel Leisure Trust had been our preferred operating partner since 2015, and we had worked closely together over the last seven years. They were selected originally due to their non-profit, communityminded ethos, so we were very sad when they had to cease trading earlier this year. We wish the staff and trustees well for the future. We now need to find a new partner to help shape the next phases of development at The Campus and to manage the facilities when they are open. Why doesn’t Halesworth Campus manage the facilities? Halesworth Campus is a charity run by volunteer trustees. Our primary work so far has
been developing the site from a former school playing field into what will be a local hub for sport, leisure and wellbeing, listening to what the community says it wanted in the surveys undertaken and at consultation events. It has always been the plan to find an experienced sports provider to manage the facilities when built as it needs real expertise. Halesworth Campus will then focus on ensuring the provider delivers what has been agreed in contracts, remains financially sustainable in the future and takes note of the feedback that users of the centre give us. Halesworth Campus will turn its attention to how the site as a whole can work for the benefit of the community by encouraging the various organisations to work together. We will encourage the development of wellbeing programmes, art and performance, training and volunteering opportunities and much more. And of course, we will forge ahead with seeking further funding. Does the new operating partner need to be a nonprofit, like Halesworth Campus? Yes. Halesworth Campus has been developed very much with the community in mind and we want to create a place where there is something for everybody. While the facilities must run to the highest standards and operate in a business-like way, we need to find a partner who shares our values and will reinvest back into the community. We are looking for an organisation that, in addition to professional level sports management, will help deliver the wider Healthy
Neighbourhood vision, listen to community feedback and work in partnership with other Campus organisations. Where will Halesworth Campus look for this new partner? With support from East Suffolk Council, Campus trustees have developed a robust procurement process. The first stage involves seeking ‘expressions of interest’ from potential partners. We have approached seven organisations we know of who currently operate sports and leisure facilities in the wider area, but we would be pleased to hear from any other interested organisations we may have overlooked. How will potential partners be asked to demonstrate their suitability? We will be asking potential operators to complete a business planning exercise to demonstrate how they see the site becoming financially sustainable, both over the first few years and into the medium term. These responses will also be assessed by our accountant, supported by trustees. We believe that ‘faceto-face’ assessment activities are very important, as well as ‘desktop’ exercises, so we will be asking potential partners to give a presentation on a topic provided for them. What are the checks and balances in this process? Three years of audited accounts will be requested from each potential operator and reviewed by an accountant to identify any financial strengths or weaknesses. We will also be running commercial credit
checks and asking potential operators to complete a ‘due diligence’ questionnaire. Representatives from community organisations as well as the town council will be invited to join us in watching and evaluating the potential partners’ presentations. This will help to ensure our operating partner is an organisation that is responsive to the needs of the wider community. All this information, and responses in presentations and interviews, will be systematically recorded, scored and considered by a selection panel. Recommendations will be made to the trustee board whose responsibility it is to make the final decision. What is the timescale for finding this new partner? We have asked for expressions of interest by the end of May. In the meantime, we are happy to provide potential operators with information they ask for to help them to fully understand the context and the role. When the potential partners’ submissions are in and the presentations have been assessed, we will be holding formal panel interviews which we hope will take place in the third week of July. These will be supplemented by seeking written references. If all goes according to plan, the Campus Board hopes to be able to make an appointment, and a public announcement, around the end of July this year. If you have any queries about this process, please contact the trustees at info@ halesworthcampus.org Next time on Campus Close-up – a look at the second planning application.

much-loved Wissett Hoards. Many of these ancient objects look new and toolbox-ready, despite lying in the soil for over three millennia. 'Uncle Billy's Box' has divulged another wealth of intriguing local information. This family heirloom was recently found to contain a chronicle of Halesworth life going back to the early 19th century, in the form of more than 200 personal
letters. A fascinating interactive exhibit enables you to hear the 'voices' of this family in their own words. These documents, written by members of the Lincolne family, bring to life Halesworth's celebrations for Queen Victoria's coronation and the founding of what would become the United Reform Church on Quay Street, plus a wealth of other local and national issues of the day. Fast-
forwarding to the 20th century, we are also displaying local memories of Coronation Day 1953. As you can see, there really is something for everyone at Halesworth & District Museum. If you'd like further information, please visit our website: www. halesworthmuseum.org.uk, or simply pop into the museum, at Halesworth Station, during our opening times, which are: • Tues 10am-12:30pm • Wed 10am-4pm • Thurs 10am-12:30pm • Fri 10am-4pm • Sat 10am-4pm Entrance is free, but donations are welcome. May, Rosemary Lewis (Chair of Halesworth Town Council) opened the doors not to a dusty old collection, but to an array of fascinating insights into the history of real life in our town and the surrounding villages. For example, there are tangible links with the Roman Emperor Nero, and Boudicca, our own East Anglian freedom fighter. Silver coins from those times and golden coins from the Iron Age, before the Roman invasion, unearthed in Cookley and Blythburgh respectively, are on display for the first time. We also now have a second hoard of local Bronze-Age axe heads, dating back around 3,500 years ago. The new display, on loan from the Royal Armouries, Leeds is on show alongside our

If you've never been to Halesworth & District Museum, you have a real treat in store. If you've visited in the past, now is the time to schedule another look around. You can find out how Halesworth locals lived in the Bronze Age, the Roman occupation, the Victorian era, and far more. Also, in this Jubilee year, we can reveal how the town celebrated coronations of not just one, but two queens. We're still at Halesworth Station, but a great deal else has changed. The premises have been extended and refurbished, and stocked with exciting new exhibits, many with interactive features. And there are flexible spaces for talks, community events and even drama. of the country to join us for this weekend. We have also been asked about running an online Step One course for a church in France. Sunday 5th June is Pentecost Sunday, and we are doing a series of Bible studies on Zoom that take a look 'Inside the Early Church'. Everyone is welcome. We start at 8pm on Wednesdays 11th and 25th of May and 8th of June. These will be recorded, so any that you miss, can be listened to later. Our relationship with our father
is one of the most significant influences in our lives. We have produced a new podcast that explores the ways in which our lives have been affected by our dads, positively or negatively. You will also find a range of podcasts covering subjects that you will find helpful. second goal from Toby Payne. A big well done to the town reserves on winning the intermediate League B in the Macron Suffolk & Ipswich League and gaining promotion to the next league up next season. A great achievement having only lost one league game all season. I myself played over 600 games in goal for Halesworth many seasons ago. Gerald Ellis, Honorary Life Vice President HTFC
Our first term of 2022 was a term of two halves! We reverted back to Zoom at the beginning of the year due to the increase in Covid cases. We thought about what was important to us and our most favourite people and things and designed a personal flag to represent this. We had fun making lanterns to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Our craft was challenging at times on Zoom, but the girls did so well and the lanterns were superb! As part of the Compassionate Communities, we thought about loved ones and pets we have lost and decorated hearts in their memory, which we have given to the Pear Tree Centre to be displayed. Also we celebrated World Thinking Day and made cards which we sent to 3rd Carterton Brownies and 6th Herne Bay Brownies. Charlotte who is Dove at 6th Herne Bay Brownies, used to be a Brownie with us, she was a Guide, Young Leader and Leader with our Guide pack in Halesworth. She then moved to Herne Bay where
she is a Brownie Leader and also Division Commissioner for Herne Bay. Charlotte got in touch and suggested exchanging cards, which we though was a wonderful idea and we were really pleased with all the lovely cards we received from the Brownies and Leaders at 6th Herne Bay. After February half term, we were delighted to be back in the United Reformed Church and meeting face-to-face again. We welcomed Darsey and Audrey and we hope you will enjoy your time with us at Brownies. Our first meeting back after half term, we enjoyed pancakes, with different toppings and had some flipping fun with pancake races. Squirrel told us all about St. George, St. Patrick, St. David and St. Andrew for our Saints evening. We got rather messy, but had lots of fun making bird feeders and bug homes, which we will take up to the Cutlers Hill Wildlife Garden later this term and we finished off the term making Easter baskets with Penguin. Sadly, we have said goodbye to Cassie, Ella, Maisie,
Olivia, Poppy and Ruby. We do hope you will all enjoy your time at Guides, we miss you all! Our grateful thanks go to Kim and Dan at Ancient House Bistro, who hosted a fundraising quiz night for us last month. It was a great evening and altogether we raised the grand sum of £362.50 for 2nd Halesworth Brownies. Thank you to all the businesses who kindly supported the event and donated raffle prizes, to everyone who came along on the evening, to those who brought raffle tickets and to Sarah for organising. On a chilly April Saturday morning, Sheila and I went over to Southwold Guide Hut and successfully renewed our First Response training with Sally Turner, we find there is always something new to be learnt. We are pleased to report that Jenna has started working towards her Young Leader Qualification and with some help from the girls, we are all agreed on Snowy Owl as her Brownie name.
Last week, we visited PC Green at the Police Station. We walked up to the Police Station and had a look at a police car, we learnt about the equipment that is kept inside and had a demonstration of the lights and sirens. Some of us were handcuffed and sat in the police car, the girls said it was very comfy! Thank you to PC Green for a great evening. Our summer term has only just begun - we have lots planned and lots of new Brownies starting with us too. We will keep you updated with our news. Sheila, Karen, Sarah and Jenna

It was a tail of when Jean brought Tessa to hear all about it! Sorry... Terrible puns for a simply great talk about hearing dogs. Jean posed the question of how do you know if your alarms gone off, there's someone at the door or even the washing machine has finished if you can't hear. Tess is the answer with her nudge to the knee, a perfect companion for the severely deaf person, and especially so for deaf children who can become very isolated from life without the ability to join in. This
often leads to disruptive behaviour and depression. Tess came from Hearing Dogs (a charity) when she was two and partially trained, so they could finish the training together. There are over 1,000 partners and just 247 dogs are trained annually. It costs £25k to train a dog and most handlers bring them out to talk about the charity and raise funds by so doing. A fascinating talk by Jean and great behaviour by Tess which we all enjoyed.
Sonnets & Songs for a Suffolk Summer Solstice Wrentham Chapel's midsummer Caedmon Evening will be held at 7pm on Thursday June 16th. The evening's programme will be assembled from items of music, spoken word and song which are brought along by anyone attending who wishes to do so. This is not exclusively
a serious or religious event so the entertainment is varied with time to enjoy a chat over wine, fruit juice and a light buffet. There is no charge for the evening but any donations towards the upkeep of the historic, two-star listed, building will be gratefully received.
Update from Harleston and District u3a Harleston & District u3a invites you to join us on Wednesday 15 June at 2.00 pm in St John's Church, Harleston for a talk by Geoffrey Robinson on The Jubilee Feast Painting for George III, which adorns a wall in Worlingworth Church, Suffolk. Through this

New Current Year Basis For the self-employed and partnerships, whilst the tax year ends on 5 April annually, you are entitled to use whatever accounting year you like. Put simply, the accounting year end that finishes in the tax year provides the assessed profits for that tax year. This of course means that someone with a year-end of 5 April 2020 has his profits assessed in 2019/20 whereas someone making his accounts to 30 April 2020 has his profits taxed in 2020/21. From 2023/24, it is proposed that everyone will uses a tax year basis, i.e.: as if their accounts were made to 31 March or 5 April annually (HMRC will treat these as coterminous). Any other year-end will be apportioned accordingly – if necessary, filing an estimated Tax Return until your second accounting period has finished. Example: 30 September annual accounting would need 6 months of 30/9/27 and 6 months of 30/9/28 accounts to form the 2027/28 assessment. The 2023/24 tax year will be a transition year. Whilst these rules are yet to be finalised, if you are not already on a 31 March or 5 April basis, it is expected that a merging of the old and new system will occur. Example: a 30 September year end would have 18 months of profit assessed in the 2023/24 tax year (12 months to 30/9/23 plus 6 months to 5 April 2024) but with the ability to elect to spread the additional tax due across 5 years. You can use any Overlap Relief brought forward. As you are effectively going
to be forced to change when your profits are assessed in the next couple of years, if you use anything other than 5 April/31 March accounting, why not consider changing your yearend when you choose, instead of when HMRC dictates. Then it is you who chooses which profits are merged. Changing the year-end is complicated and there is no onerule-fits-all. There can be costs involved and you would not be allowed to spread any additional tax across five years either. However, with an enforced change coming, you have the opportunity to make a change when you want to and potentially have less tax assessed. Hope this helps! “For further information please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) robin. beadle@ensors.co.uk” Disclaimer: “Specialist advice should always be sought prior to taking any action on matters discussed in this article.”

Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, 1897, Star Hotel, Gosford Road (image courtesy of Beccles and District Museum)
Beccles Jubilee Beccles will be celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in a variety of ways over the Platinum Jubilee weekend. In keeping with its long tradition of marking Jubilees, which goes back to at least 1810 when the Corporation of the Fen decided to spend £50 (more than £4,000 in today's money) in regaling the 'Poor of this Parish' to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of George III. Jubilee celebrations took on larger dimensions in the reign of Queen Victoria; and permanent memorials were created. In 1887, 400 poor and aged persons were given a sit-down dinner, consisting of meat, bread and plum pudding, but they had to bring their own cutlery! Athletic
sports took place on the Common. The great stained-glass east window of St. Michael's Church was created to commemorate the Jubilee and contributions from grateful townsfolk also paid for the extension of the hospital (then in Fair Close). A new ward was added, bringing the accommodation to 15 beds and three cots. In 1897, the Queen celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. Much debate (including at two public meetings) took place in the town over how the milestone should be marked in a tangible form. Eventually, it was decided to build a home for the town's nurse, even though a vote had been in favour of a new public hall. Tea was provided for
2,000 children on the Common, and various games and sports took place. At 9pm, a procession of cyclists in fancy dress paraded through the decorated streets, one lad dressed as Queen Victoria graciously acknowledging the cheering of hundreds of spectators. In 1935, for George V's Silver Jubilee a grand carnival processed from Priory Road to the Common via a very circuitous route through the town. Events for children centred on the Caxton Recreation Ground. Adults could dance at the Public Hall from 9pm and the Scouts lit their beacon at 10pm on the Common where they were joined by the Guides around a campfire for community singing. Many Beccles residents will
remember the celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Events included the grand fête provided by the Sports Development Council at Beef Meadow, the Fire Brigade's open day and disco and the Regal Theatre's 'all-star variety show'. Some Beccles householders decorated their properties extensively. The gates to The Avenue from The Common were renovated (and will be refurbished again in 2022). More information about how Beccles celebrated Jubilees will be available in an exhibition at St. Michael's Church over the Jubilee Weekend. Barry Darch, Beccles and District Museum

Bookings will open from June and any enquiries should be sent to rsccbookings@hotmail.com Barrie Remblance Everyone involved with the Sports and Community Centre was saddened to hear of the recent death of Barrie who was one of the main volunteers for the site. Barrie was the main groundsman over many years and was responsible for the field grass cutting and pitch marking. He was also one of the Charity original trustees. project - grant applications are currently being completed for this. They have continued to play on the site during the work, and their understanding during the development of the site and its facilities has been greatly appreciated. A spokesperson for the Pavilion said ‘We are so proud of what we have achieved so far, and are now looking forward to welcoming community groups, classes, and the opportunity for people to hold their functions and celebrations in our beautiful new building, as well as seeing sport continue to flourish on this cherished site. We now have a Sports and Community facility for generations of local people
and helpers. All proceeds will be split between The Brain Tumour Charity and a new piece of play equipment for the Pageant Field play area. Just for background information, the reason for the Brain Tumour Charity is that I have just completed six weeks of radiotherapy for a meningioma brain tumour, hopefully successfully but I won't know the results until April when I see the Oncologist after my next MRI but fingers crossed! Hope to see you there. Eileen A Coe and the POP Team: Rachel, Hollie, Steve and Marion

A group of tireless volunteers in Reydon are celebrating the near completion of a brand new Sports and Community Centre in the village. The land has a long legacy of being used by the community as it was the playing field to Reydon High School until the school closed in 1990. After the formation of Reydon Playing Fields Charity in 2013 additional land was purchased and work on the pavilion began in 2016. The building, which boasts a function lounge and large hall, (which are interconnecting) kitchen, disabled access, large carpark, and patio area overlooking the playing field, was funded by many local grants including from Reydon

The 'New Suffolk Garland' is available to purchase from The Halesworth Bookshop and will give you the chance to enter our free draw to win a used copy of the original 1961 book. This will be drawn on Friday 10th June at a promotional event starting at 7pm in the bookshop. Independent Bookshop Week from 18th-25th June will celebrate the work of Indie bookshops across the country and the work they do to promote books and authors. Look out for many promotional offers, special discounts, events and signed copies. During this celebratory week as a thank you to our customers, we'll be offering the chance to enjoy a coffee while browsing and shopping. There will be no charge for this but donations to our School's Fund would be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore, when you spend £25 during the week you will receive a voucher to redeem online to get a High Five £5 book token to spend. There will also be double points on our loyalty card scheme - 2 stamps instead of 1 for every book over £7.99. Tilly (pictured) is just one of a number of mature cats in the care of Framlingham and Saxmundham CP at the moment, who are looking for somewhere to spend the rest of their lives. Looking for a home: The beautiful long-haired lady pictured is Tilly, who is about nine years old. She takes a while to gain her confidence with new people, but she really does love a proper cuddle. Tilly does not like dogs and would be best suited in a quiet adult only home with no other pets. If you could offer Tilly the quiet, loving home she needs, please contact us. Happy birthday Joan!
Framlingham & Saxmundham Cats Protection news #MatureMoggiesDay - 16th June - Celebrating our senior 'kitizens'. Did you know that older cats can take over three times longer to find new adopted homes than younger cats? Cats Protection (CP) is on a mission to change this by holding a day of celebration on June 16th in honour of mature moggies who are often rather young at heart. CP would like you to take to social media in your masses using the hashtag #MatureMoggiesDay to show appreciation for cats who have a lifetime of experience and still so much love to give. They may be a little calmer and their meows might have more of a gravelly tone, but mature cats make ideal companions. Their warmth, kindness and head nuzzles help lift any day and who says that older moggies don't like getting into mischief? CP would love you to share your stories on 16th June! So get posting on social

On May 4th 2022, we celebrated Joan Morley's 100th birthday. She had a lovely day with family, friends and the staff at Highfield. Joan would like to thank everyone who came and made it special. HRH Queen Elizabeth II also sent her best wishes to Joan. Money has been donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance in Joan's wishes as it's a charity close to her heart.

With days lengthening and weather improving, things are going well at Halesworth Bookshop and we're delighted to be welcoming back authors for signing sessions and talks in the shop. To celebrate the Queen's Jubilee, children are welcome to the bookshop on Saturday 3rd June from 10:30am-noon to make and decorate a crown which they can wear to the town's picnic in the park later that day. In the afternoon, the bookshop will be joining forces with The Feedbarn to offer light refreshments from 3pm to their customers who supported both establishments throughout the long running saga of the fire and scaffolding! Back in 1961, HRH Queen Elizabeth II made a Royal Progress through Suffolk - the first official visit to the county since Queen Elizabeth I some 400 years previously. To mark that occasion, a book titled 'A Suffolk Garland for The Queen' was produced celebrating the miscellany of Suffolk life with letters, scenes, sketches and photographs. Now to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, there's a new book 'A New Suffolk Garland',
