Harvest mice and other small mammals
Pristine, pre-loved clothes and accessories The Hawk, Bridge Street, Halesworth, IP19 8AD 07785 570750
At the March meeting of the Blyth Valley and Southwold SWT Wildlife group, Geoffrey Abbot gave a fascinating talk about small mammals. Much of his research comes from the Flatford Mill area, which has a wide diversity of habitats: arable fields, woodland, hedges, grassland and marshes. Pride of place goes to the charming harvest mouse, with its attractive russet fur above, and white below. It's the only mouse with a prehensile tail that it can wrap around twigs and grasses. Their spherical, woven nests are barely a foot or so above ground, and they thrive in areas where wild plants grow in amongst crops. Other mice (house, field, wood, marsh and pygmy and dormice) are all present, utilising different habitats in the area. Other species were discussed. Bank and field voles are present in good numbers,

and both voles and mice can swim if need be in the tidal areas of the marshes. If you've ever wondered why your cat doesn't eat shrews, it's because of scent glands that emit distasteful odours. Moles are highly specialised. Their tunnels act as giant worm traps, as worms fall into the spaces. It is an area rich in these small creatures, and both tawny and barn owls benefit from the variety of creatures to predate. We all enjoyed the wide range of photographs, and learning about the sensitivity with which the surveys are conducted. Our next meeting is on Thursday 21st April at 7:30pm in the Southwold Arts Centre, IP18 6JP. We have a brief AGM, with wine and snacks, followed by a film: "Secret Rivers - the Blyth", featuring Paul Heiney. Free admission.
chutney for many years and have made 1,000's of jars which very quickly disappear from Sue and Debbie's stall at our fairs. They also supply the marmalade for our Big Breakfast. Thank you to everyone who supplied a raffle prize or a cake for the cake stall. We have a fantastic committee and group of volunteers who supplied all the rest of the food for the breakfast and also made cakes and gave raffle prizes. Well done to the kitchen ladies and Phyllis and Margaret for keeping everyone well fed. It was nice to see both Jill and Gill back with us again. On Tuesday 22nd, we all met at The Huntsman and Hounds to celebrate the many years of service Dot and Colin have given to Cancer Research. Dot has now stepped down from the committee but it's not goodbye as she and Colin will still come along and help at our events in the future when they can.

On Saturday, we held our annual Big Breakfast on a lovely sunny day. The hall also looked lovely and sunny as we set out the tables with our lovely new tablecloths and jam jars of spring flowers. We raised £942.85 which is an amazing amount. We'd like to thank the following businesses for their very generous support: • Clark's Butchers for providing the bacon and sausages. • The Co-op Halesworth for the bread, milk, butter, tea and coffee etc. • Spectra for sponsoring our event. • Dunelm for the lovely tablecloths. • EPS Transfers for our bright and cheerful banners - We're so grateful for everything you do. • Jane for making all the pancakes. • Nina for supplying the jam. • Maureen from the Co-op Café for the sausage rolls and scones. Dot was given a bouquet of flowers as a token of our appreciation for all her hard work and we all hope they enjoyed their meal. Thank you to Ian at the Huntsman for looking after us so well. Our next event is our Spring Fair on May 14th in Holton Village Hall. We'll be serving light lunches (hopefully, we'll have a new menu) and our delicious desserts. We'll also have our usual stalls and our popular spring garden stall. Please come along and support our event. We at Cancer Research were all saddened to hear that Rowley had passed away. We all send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to all the family. Rowley had been our "book man" for many years, selling the books at our jumble sales and fairs, everyone loved Rowley. Halesworth Repair Cafe
If you haven’t already been, you must pop down and see Halesworth Community Larder. If you have food or staple goods that you cannot use, you can swop those for items that you really want or need. And if things are a bit of a struggle, we have fresh veg and fruit and lots of tins to help you ensure that you and your family can eat well during the week. We also have a supply of nappies and lots of cleaning goods too. Our Larder relies on the very generous donations from local people and the many shops and local businesses that support us. Thanks to all of you for your support. The Community Larder and Tescos. We are delighted to announce that the Community Larder has been nominated as one of the 3 ‘in-store vote’ Charities at the Beccles and Southwold branches. If you do a little shop at Tescos (it only has to be one item), you will be given a token and we would love it if you could place your vote for the Larder. You have until the end of June – thank you! Paddy Flegg Paddy Flegg, District Councillor, Town Councillor, School Governor, HVC Chair, Charity Trustee and friend to so many people died in March. Our current Chair Karen Austin has written the following tribute. It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Paddy Flegg, our former Chair and Trustee. Paddy was the charity’s
longest serving Trustee, her tenure spanning over three decades. As Chair she guided and supported the charity for over twelve of those years. During this time HVC expanded significantly, and became a key provider of volunteer led community support in the area. Many of the services we value today, including community transport and befriending, were developed by Paddy and her team and her strong leadership laid the foundations for the sustainable organisation we are today. After retiring from HVC in 2013, she maintained a keen interest in our activities whilst also serving the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund. In 2019 we were delighted to recognize her as one of our first Community Champions, in recognition of her outstanding and enduring contribution to our organisation. Our thoughts of with Paddy’s family and many friends at this difficult time. And on a lighter note… Thank you to all of you who popped into our office to wish Happy Birthday (and it was a big one) to our wonderful colleague Karen Kerridge. HVC was able to give Karen a small gift too. We are delighted to announce that on the 1st April, Karen became our Deputy Director in recognition of her amazing contribution to HVC. And very touchingly, it was Paddy Flegg who interviewed Karen for her new job at HVC over 17 years ago. We have so, so much to thank Paddy for.

Wenhaston Flower Club Our meeting on 5th of April was very well attended and we were delighted to welcome Lizzie Woolnough to flower club. Lizzie's workshop on how to make an Easter table centre piece without the use of florist foam was great fun and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. The arrangements produced were beautiful. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd May at 7:30pm in Wenhaston Village Hall. We are delighted to welcome Jane Bastow to the flower club. Jane is a local flower gardener with a wealth of knowledge and experience. As we look forward to the warmer days and time in the garden Jane's demonstration is entitled "Preparing For Summer". This will be a flower demonstration with a difference. Jane will be showing us how to pot up our summer bedding
plants to keep them flowering all summer and which plants grow best together, she will also be demonstrating how to pot up two different types of hanging baskets. We're a friendly little club and offer a warm welcome to everyone. We don't have an annual membership fee. If the demonstration is something that interests you, just come along on the night (£5 with tea/coffee and biscuits). For more information, please contact Jackie on: 01502 478401.

Beccles and District Museum at Leman House, Ballygate, Beccles, has opened for its 2022 season with a special exhibition - a display of samplers and sewing entitled ‘Life Stories in Stitches’. The skill and determination shown by the children whose work is on display are impressive. Eightyear old Louisa Anne Rockhill, for example, delicately stitched an elaborate sampler which is dated 1837. Pam Finch, who looks after the Museum’s textile collection and who has prepared the exhibition, has also provided interesting background information about samplers. Harleston & Waveney Art Trail will take place throughout the valley that forms the border between Norfolk and Suffolk. Eighteen artists will open their studio doors to visitors across the weekends of 21st-22nd and 28th-29th May. It's the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors alike to explore how and where artists work in the stunning landscapes of south Norfolk and north Suffolk. The free event features a range of artworks including contemporary and traditional paintings, abstract work, batik, mixed media, ceramics, lino prints, drawings, collage, textiles, wire sculptures plus greetings cards and prints made from the artists' original artwork. Harleston and Waveney Art Trail chairman Malcolm Cudmore said: "After two years of uncertainty and new habits, Harleston and Waveney Art Trail has returned to its regular Spring timetable for 2022. The two minitrails that we held in 2021 proved that, despite the disruption to normal life, there was a considerable public interest in visiting artists' studios and we're very happy to be returning to our regular annual weekends in May, with eighteen artists opening their studios. We're delighted to welcome new member, Nikki Dedman, to the Trail. Last
autumn, she was a guest artist in another artist's studio and her work attracted great interest. Her unique wire sculptures add an extra dimension to the already wide range of creative works made by Harleston and Waveney Art Trail members. I'm particularly pleased to be back on the Trail myself after a two-year absence due to Covid restrictions. We hope that our visitors will be intrigued and entranced by the new work made by the artists over the last year. We look forward to welcoming both regular and new visitors and to inviting them to see our work in the very place it was made." The artists participating in the Trail are: Kath Wallace, Lisa Henshall, Caryl Challis, Rachel Wiles, Bobbie Watchorn, Noelle Francis, Barbara Bernard, Sara Johnson, Di McKenna, Malcolm Cudmore, Paul Zawadzki, Liz Taunt, Lin Patterson, Ingrid Duffy, Nell Close, Nicci Dedman, Rosemary Elliott and Chris Mound. The artist's studios are dotted around the valley, in Harleston, Redenhall, Denton, Earsham,
Ditchingham, Hedenham, Bungay, St. Cross South Elmham, Homersfield, Wortwell, Weybread, Wingfield and Syleham. The event is sponsored by Durrants Estate Agents and supported by The Imperial Wine Company, Bungay and The Old Kings Head, Brockdish. Malcolm Cudmore said: "Once again, we're very grateful for the support of our principal sponsor Durrants. Thanks also to our advertisers - Imperial Wine in Bungay and The Old Kings Head in Brockdish." The 2022 art trail leaflet will be available from locations across the region as well as in every branch of Durrants, at The Imperial Wine Company and The Old Kings Head. A fully interactive Google Map of the Trail will be available through the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail website. Anyone with a smart phone will be able to obtain accurate directions to any studio from any location. Precise locations will also be given through the WhatThreeWords app. For more information, visit www.hwat.org.uk.

May is here and the wonderful sunshine with the bit of rain we have had has made everything grow really well. This does mean without exception that the weeds are thriving. After a rain shower is the best time to weed but that might mean getting damp knees if you weed like me but a Dutch hoe will do the trick. To reduce the spread of forget-me-not, lift the plants now to prevent heavy self-seeding The blossom has been truly wonderful this spring it’s so nice to see the bees working hard and this should mean great things so let’s hope we are in for a bumper crop from our fruit trees. You can lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs now don’t cut the flowered bulbs down or tie them up its best just to let them die back naturally. Rambling and climbing roses should be tied in, lay the stems horizontally; this will encourage it to produce more flowers. Trim lavender plants now, cutting off any old flower heads and about 2.5cm (1 inch) of the current year's growth. May is the month when seed sowing is in full swing, space in the greenhouse is filling up fast with seed trays and pots. Hardier crops started earlier in the year should be hardened off during the day before planting into their final positions. Tender crops such as beans and squashes can be sown undercover now. If the weather is particularly fine, sow beans direct where they are to crop.

Later-flowering perennials that are prone to sprawling can be given the "Chelsea chop" in the middle of the May by removing the top third with shears. Though herbaceous clematis, asters, helenium, Rudbeckia and bergamot may look stark for a week, re-branching will quickly form stockier plants. Tie in new growth on summerflowering clematis to extend its range, or to train it where you need it to be while it is still young and malleable. Every few years, older plants of spring-flowering Montana or macropetala can be cut hard back as soon as the flowers fade. Please remember to keep an eye on your water butts, make sure they are set up correctly so they collect maximum rainwater, we never know when this valuable resource will be required later. Beware of any late frosts; your tender young plants will be venerable so keep an eye on the forecast and cover when needed. Enjoy this month and try and get out as much as possible, if you need any help in the garden or just some advice please calls us. Above all enjoy your garden. Halesworth & Southwold Community News - May 2022 - 9
Halesworth Community Church
A message from Gerald at Halesworth Tool Hire
True or false? I used to speak twice a term at a Wednesday assembly at Halesworth Middle School. One of my assemblies was to present a series of scenarios and ask the young people if they thought the stories were true or false. Let me give you a couple of examples. Kung Fu expert Kori Osoko of Japan demolished an entire (condemned) five-story office building with his bare hands and feet. The demolition job was part of the 1979 Festival of Oriental Martial Arts, and Kori Osoko took three days and five hours to complete the demolition. Do you think that is true or false? Here's another one... In 1978 workers were sent to dredge a murky stretch of the ChesterfieldStockwith canal. Their task was to clear all the rubbish. They were disturbed during their tea break by a policeman who said he was investigating a giant whirlpool in the canal. However, when they got back, the whirlpool had gone, and so had a one-and-ahalf-mile stretch of the canal. In its place was a vast expanse of mud thickly punctuated with old prams, bedsteads and rusting bicycle accessories - and a flotilla of irate holidaymakers stranded on their boats in a brown sludge. They discovered that among the first pieces of junk they hauled out was the 200-year-old plug that had ensured the canal's continued existence. 'We didn't know there was a plug,' said one workman explaining that all the records had been lost in a fire during the war. 'Anything can happen on a canal', a spokesman for the British Waterways Board said afterwards. Are these stories true or false? Well, the first one is false, but the second one is true. With some stories, it doesn't really matter, but we are in that time of the year when Christians claim that Jesus Christ died for us some 2000 years ago - and amazingly rose from the dead. As C.S. Lewis wrote,
'Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and if true, is of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important'. So, what do you think? Even if Easter meant little more to you than enjoying a bit more chocolate than usual, could it be important to at least ask the question, 'Is the story of Jesus rising from the dead true or false?' Both assembly stories sound pretty outlandish - but that doesn't make them both untrue. Just because something is outside our normal scope of thought doesn't mean it didn't happen. So, how could you find out? J. Warner Wallace is an L.A County cold-case homicide detective. He was also a vocal atheist. He decided to use his nationally recognised investigative skills to look at the evidence behind the claim that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. In his book, 'Person of Interest', he shows how he sifted through the evidence from history alone without relying on the New Testament. The result? He was persuaded by his investigation and became a committed Christian. He concludes, 'I'm only a Christian today because it's true.' It is of no real consequence that the canal was drained, although workers were warned in future to not pull on heavy chains when clearing canals! But whether Jesus rose from the dead has enormous ramifications for our lives. If He didn't, then perhaps death has the last word after all - but if He did rise again, then the rest of what He claimed is validated. We can know His forgiveness, power, love, peace and purpose in our lives. The future is genuinely bright, and whatever our circumstances, there is hope. What do you think? True or false? www.halesworthcommunity church.org John Sparkes
Viv and I started Halesworth Tool Hire in the early 1980's at West Lodge at Holton. We traded from there, until we grew too large and the planning office shut us down. We moved to a building that had been derelict for some time, on Broadway Drive in Halesworth. With a bit of work and a lot of hope, we converted the main building to our new offices, workshop and warehouse. We also managed to convert the smaller adjacent unit as well. We initially welcomed H&H Joinery as our neighbours in the smaller unit. Mencap later took over this unit and schooled their clients in the ways of re-purposing household items and furniture. I still have a key hanger complete with graphics and an old fashioned set of scales painted in barge art. We moved again in 2015 after having solar panels fitted to our roof, disaster, asbestos contamination. This time we rented a unit on Blyth Road Industrial Estate, welcomed new and old customers to yet another shop, this time with all brand new equipment.
Yes I do have a workshop at home, it will get tidied in the due course of time, don't rush me. I must not forget to mention Pagoda Sytems, it ran alongside the toolhire, I bought my first computer in '83 I think, and started selling them soon after to our customers. I was ably helped by the very well known Richard Humphries, who continues the repairs and maintenance of customers computers at M.F.W at number 1 Miles Ward Court. Behind Boots just opposite the Market Place. Our old unit at 5a Blyth Road Industrial Estate is now in the hand of V.J.Neale Services Ltd. Vinny, to most of you, is also a well known and trusted face in Halesworth, he keeps my MX5 and Suzuki in tyres and services. The years have treated all of us very kindly and it is time to retire, thanks to all our customers over the years, just short of the 10,000. Think of all the bashed thumbs not to mention the multitude of mugs of tea consumed in the pursuit of doing it yourself. Many thanks to everyone of our customers over the many years, it has, genuinely, been a pleasure.

Halesworth Campus
Campus Close-up: A look at the grass pitch
Is there a need for a new grass pitch? The old middle school pitch is still being played on, and there are grass pitches on Dairy Hill. A lack of playing pitches has been identified in the area (https://www.eastsuffolk.gov. uk/assets/Leisure/PlayingPitch-Non-Pitch-Assessment. pdf), meaning there is a need for practice and match pitches locally. The Campus site is part of the Halesworth/Holton Healthy Neighbourhood under Policy WLP4.1 of the East Suffolk Council Waveney Local Plan (March 2019), which allocates part of the Campus site for a grass pitch. The development of the new, improved grass pitch will fulfil the requirements of the Local Plan, and will provide a net gain in terms of game time and availability. How will the current pitch be improved? What makes a patch of grass into a proper pitch for match play? The new grass pitch will be completed to full Rugby Football Union standard. As well as the installation of permanent
floodlights, It will be increased to full size with run-offs that ensure safety for both players and spectators. Acoustic fencing and ball-stop netting will improve the playing experience and limit noise for neighbours. Is the grass pitch just for rugby and not football? Rugby and football have different requirements for a playing pitch surface. Southwold Rugby Club have had eight teams practising across the seven-acre site for six years and so, under planning law, the 2.5-acre pitch will be developed for rugby purposes. The new 3G pitch will provide additional training and match facilities for football where multiple games can be played back-to-back without pitch deterioration. Out of season there may be opportunities for other use on the grass pitch beyond the annual touch rugby sessions every Monday through June and July, although it will need down time for the playing surface to recover. Why are we building a pitch in Halesworth for Southwold Rugby Club to play on? More than 160 men, women and 13-18-year-old boys train at least once a week on the Halesworth Campus site. In fact, Halesworth is the epicentre of Southwold Rugby Club’s
catchment area with around 75% of members living within a 10-mile radius of the Campus. Only three members of the club actually live in Southwold! SRC have funded the existing mobile floodlights, rugby posts and line marking. Their teams have seen much success locally and nationally in recent years and Halesworth Campus is proud to host SRC’s training sessions on our site. But rugby is for men. What about women and girls? Rugby as a sport has been growing in popularity worldwide and part of that growth has been due to an increase in take-up by women and girls. Southwold Rugby Club has had a women’s team for 18 years. Where will the grass pitch be on the site? To the north of the site, adjacent to the Harrisons Lane entrance. Is it a good idea to place the grass pitch right next to the future care home? This is not considered to be an issue by the healthcare providers, nor by the planners, who both see the proximity of residents to normal town activities as positive and preferable to their being kept at a distance. Will there be any space for spectators?
Yes. Seating will be provided www.pitchero.com/clubs/ When will construction ready by the autumn of 2023. and matches and practice FOR MORE INFORMATION beccles/ start and when will it be sessions can be watched both ABOUT PLAYING RUGBY IN Next time on Campus ready to play on? from around the perimeter of Close-up – Finding a new We hope to start on site in the THE AREA, PLEASE VISIT: the pitch and from outside the summer and have the pitches www.southwoldrugby.club/ sports and leisure operator. fence line. There don’t seem to be any changing facilities for all these players? But there will be! A planning application for Phase Two of Halesworth Campus is in process and will be submitted later this year. This application will include a sports centre with two sets of changing rooms and showers; one for indoor gym users, another for outdoor pitch users. We would hope that construction will start on this phase in autumn 2023 with completion projected for autumn 2024. It’s a big site. Isn’t there room for another grass pitch? There might be! We have funding to create a temporary pitch on the patch of land behind the Skills Centre for use while construction work is completed, if necessary. Although this land is designated for housing in the Local Plan, Halesworth Campus would like to retain it, if possible, for sports use. This will require more funds to be found to replace what would have been raised by the sale of the land to a housing developer but we hope to make it reality.
Halesworth Neighbourhood Plan On the 16th March 2022, Halesworth Town Council (HTC) agreed that this new version of the Halesworth Plan should be submitted to East Suffolk Council (ESC) along with other documents that have to be provided. These include a Consultation Statement which details all the ways that the community, has been consulted and the responses to all the residents' comments. ESC will review all the documents and the new version of the plan, letting us know if they want more changes before organising another consultation where local people will again have the chance to comment. So how have local people shaped this latest version of the plan? We have made numerous
changes to the text, clarifying information, rewording sections of the plan. Most significantly, we have increased the number of nondesignated heritage assets in the town. These are places/buildings that may not be listed but have a significance that means they should be protected or safeguarded. The plan identified the Maltings at Station Yard, Halesworth Library, the Cross Ram Offices and Patrick Stead and we have added the New Reach and the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway in the Millennium Green. Other changes have been made as a result of feedback from ESC and Suffolk County Council including a significant
change in the section on play areas. Sadly, the planning group's ideas to work towards a secondary school for Halesworth have not received the support of Suffolk County Council, but the schools have agreed that they will look to see how the needs of secondary school-aged children in Halesworth could be improved. So what next? We hope to hear from ESC by Easter, 2022. We should then know the timeline for putting the new plan and Consultation Statement on the town council website as part of ESC's further six-week consultation period. Another opportunity for you to comment. So watch this space... again.

Halesworth is getting ever closer to having its own Neighbourhood Plan, securing vital funding for the town but also ensuring that local people have a say in how our town is shaped and grows in the future. We closed our consultation on the first draft of the plan on the 17th December, 2021. Over ninety individuals, local businesses and organisations commented on our draft plan, raising some concerns but also suggesting some new ideas and possibilities. The Neighbourhood Plan team have spent many hours answering the queries and questions that people raised. They went back and looked at parts of the plan and made alterations and changes based on people's comments.

Co-op is set to serve-up a new-look, extended store to serve the Southwold community following a seven month, £1,6m programme of works and improvements. The new-look Co-op store re-launches on Tuesday 12th April, and is powered by 100% renewable electricity. A new awning at the front of the store saying 'welcome to Southwold's Co-op' has also been introduced to reflect its Market Place location. Opening between 6am10pm daily, the store (which supports eighteen local jobs) includes John Lewis parcel collection and return, Amazon parcel collection and, the Click & Collect of groceries through Co-op's own online shop (coop. co.uk/shop) for added ease, speed and convenience. There is also a free ATM and customer

Southwold's Co-op also includes a recycle unit for 'soft plastics' which are unlikely to be collected by local councils, including: crisp packets, bread bags, lids from ready meals and yogurt pots, biscuit wrappers and, pet food pouches. A funding boost is provided locally through Co-op's Membership programme. Membership of the Co-op unlocks additional value through in-store offers, and
sees Members rewarded with 2p in every pound they spend on Co-op branded products which is added to their own personal Membership account balance. The Co-op also donates the same amount to local causes and community organisations, with those benefiting currently including: RNLI Lifeguards, Southwold; RNLI Aldeburgh and Home-Start in Suffolk. Students in Southwold who are TOTUM cardholders (the new name for NUS extra) also receive a 10% discount at the Co-op. There will be offers, promotions and samples in and around the store to mark its re-launch, including ice cream samples and money saving coupons being given away outside the store between 12:30pm-5pm on launch day, and again between 12 noon and
2:30pm the following day. Robert Lawn, Co-op Store Manager, said: "We are delighted to have had the opportunity to carry out such a significant programme of works and improvements, including an extension of the store, it really has a great new look and feel. We are looking forward to welcoming the community back into their Co-op. Our aim is to operate at the heart of local life and, we have worked to develop the range, choice, products and added services to create a really compelling offer to serve our community, conveniently." Halesworth Town Council
177036
Halesworth Town Council would like to congratulate everyone involved with the Halesworth Day of Dance held on Saturday the 2nd April, 2022 and also the Halesworth Twinning Association for their hospitality and assistance in welcoming our friends from our twin town, Eitorf, Germany. The Chair, Cllr Rosemary Lewis, opened the event in the Market Place on a cold but beautifully sunny day and the town was treated to a wonderful display of colours and costumes. This year the town welcomed for the first time; the energetic and flamboyant Eitorf dance troop, KG Närrische Stadtsoldaten Eitorf e.V. von 1912, joining around 30 dance groups who entertained the town throughout the day, culminating in a folk dance at the Holton Village Hall. As reported last month, there are now three vacancies for town councillors. All twelve seats will be up for an election in May 2023, so if you are interested, it would be a good time to try this voluntary role for a year. Further information can be found on the website or contact the clerk. At the last monthly meeting, the Chair thanked all councillors who had left during the year for their valued contribution. The Ink Festival makes a welcome return to the town starting on April 21st through to April 24th. The Festival is expanding into a multitude of different places around the town, offering performances spread over several venues
this year including; The Cut, The Rifle Hall, MR King & Sons, The Angel, Halesworth & District Museum, The White Swan and more. We are all shocked on a daily basis by the tragedy unfolding in Ukraine. There are various links on our website showing some suggested places where you can donate but if anyone can offer accommodation, then please register here https:// www.gov.uk/register-interesthomes-ukraine. The Town Council and volunteer groups in the town will be very keen to help when families are relocated to the parish. At the April Town Council meeting, the Chair, Cllr Rosemary Lewis, acknowledged the sad news that a former Chair of the Council, Patricia (Paddy) Flegg, had passed away. A minute silence was held at the meeting, ‘Paddy' was Chair of the Council between; 1989 – 1991, a former District Councillor and Chair of Halesworth Volunteer Centre along with many other roles in her life. She gave a great deal of dedication and time for the town as Emma Healey of Halesworth Volunteer Centre so eloquently described in her tribute to Paddy at the council meeting.

As a result of the changes in the way that health and care services are provided locally, the charity formerly known as The League of Friends of Patrick Stead Hospital decided the time was right to adapt and respond to this, including a change of name. There are some exciting times ahead for the newly named charity. Firstly, we have purchased the old Methodist Church in London Road and work has commenced to convert this into a new day care facility to replace the Rayner Green centre which closed at the end of June 2017. Together with the re-designed day care centre, new offices are being built on the site to house the Halesworth Volunteer Centre which have so outgrown the London Road premises they now occupy. Together with a car park and room for a bus, the site will provide all that is needed to make

Bill has turned a hobby into a profession; moving from being a volunteer to a full-time rescuer of wind and water mills. He gave us an insight into the complexities of repairing and restoring these ancient landmarks and the joinery and metalworking skills that he has developed along the way. Bill told us of the satisfaction he has derived from re-discovering and using the millwrighting techniques that were developed when the mills were originally built. work hard to create an eclectic programme and they are pleased that international singer Polly Gibbons (who originally hailed from Suffolk) is providing an evening of bluesy, soulful jazz joined by a jazz quartet led by the Artistic Director at Ronnie Scott's Club. Other events include the Derek Nash Band featuring Noel McCalla in his celebration of the genius of Stevie Wonder, and the closing musical event of the festival will be a particularly memorable concert from the renowned Blues Band, as it will be the final night of their Farewell Tour, an event which is expected to sell out very early. Alongside an exceptional week of music will be inspirational talks on subjects as diverse as the Amazon Rain Forest and Sea Sagas and coastal people. Roy Clark will tell the story of the pirate radio station Radio Caroline, and Kate Bradbury will describe ways in which gardeners can attract wildlife and create habitats in their gardens. Comedy will be provided by Dr Phil Hammond who will recall funny incidents from his many years working in the NHS and Charlie Haylock will explain how he provided dialect tuition for the feature film 'The Dig'. For those who enjoy theatre, Paul Trigg will provide a compelling dramatisation of many of Charles Dickens' characters, and Cheryl Knight of the Apollo Theatre Company will bring us her delightfully funny and affectionate tribute to Joyce Grenfell.
The Festival team warmly welcomes you back. Please obtain a copy of the full programme which lists all these and other events showing the dates, times and ticket prices. After a two-year break, it is anticipated that tickets will sell quickly, so please book early from 30th March, as follows: Online: www.southwoldartsfestival. co.uk, Enquiries: Info@ southwoldartsfestival.co.uk, Telephone: 01502 722572, Box Office: Southwold Arts Centre, Cumberland Road, IP18 6JP. THE BOX OFFICE IS OPEN! There's no doubt that the pandemic impacted on us all, not least with the loss of live entertainment. So, there will be much to celebrate this summer, with the return to Southwold of the iconic festival that carries its name. One of the strengths of the annual festival is that its programme is always so diverse, this year bringing over twenty shows to the Arts Centre including music, talks and theatre performances with top names including Clare Teal, the Opera Babes and The Blues Band. As well as these artists of international acclaim there are also a number of events with a distinctly local flavour, including fascinating talks on Walpole Old Chapel, Radio Caroline and also the making of the film 'The Dig' based on the Sutton Hoo medieval treasures, discovered near Woodbridge. There will also be comedy

from Phil Hammond who has had an extensive career as an NHS doctor, comedian and broadcaster. He has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and has appeared regularly on radio and television, as well as writing for the Independent newspaper and Private Eye. Also visiting the festival will be Cheryl Knight in her remarkable tribute to Joyce Grenfell. The reviews of Cheryl's: 'Ode to Joyce' show describe her performance as 'perfectly honed inhabiting the wit and wisdom of such a wonderfully loved and selfeffacing performer'. Also with a local link, is an evening concert with Polly Gibbons, a farmer's daughter from Suffolk, who came to sing in some of the greatest venues in the world. The Sunday Times said that she 'is a jazz talent whose voice is steeped in vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin' and Jazzwise magazine says that she is 'a truly exceptional talent'. The Arts Festival team always aim to provide the very best in music and entertainment, and it is remarkable that so many internationally acclaimed artists find their way to the doors of our Arts Centre venue here in Southwold. The Festival Director Lin Le Versha said 'we are so lucky to have such a high standard of entertainment on our doorstep, but it is so important that everyone does their best to support these events to ensure the future of this much loved festival, so please do book your tickets now'.

Waveney Light Opera Group (WLOG)
Beccles weather report March 2022
Robyn Hood (Bonnie Quinlan) and Will Scarlett (Kyle Mace) in WLOG's next Production, The Ballad of Robyn Hood.
New British musical comedy premieres in Beccles Beccles-based musical theatre society The Waveney Light Opera Group (WLOG) are back after lockdown with a world premier! They are presenting a new musical comedy written by two members of the group, Ian Cook and Ian Newton. In 2019, the pair started work on their third show together. They got off to a great start, then lockdown hit! No more getting together around a piano, new methods of writing had to be found. After mastering Zoom, the pair worked out a way to carry on and, after months of hard work, they emerged with another musical comedy, "The Ballad of Robyn Hood". The two Ians have decided to offer the show to all NODA societies, free of charge for a limited period, the only proviso being that companies should make a donation to an NHS charity. The first group to take up the offer was WLOG.
The show tells the story of an am dram group attempting to stage an unpublished work by two of the world's leading exponents of musical theatre, Andrew Laird Warbler and Tim Rhys! Robyn (with a 'y') is played by Felicity. Her Aunt Christine left her the musical in her will. The story goes that Christine once spent a bohemian summer in Paris where she shared a garret with two young musicians, the, soon to be famous, Andrew and Tim. After a particularly bohemian party, the boys decide to head off to Buenos Aires and 'Robyn Hood' is abandoned but Christine brings it home with her where it stays undiscovered for many years. The show follows the story of the society's struggle to get the show to stage. The show runs from the 26th30th April, 7:30pm at Beccles Public Hall. Tickets are available from the box office: 01502 770060 or at: www.becclespublichall.co.uk
This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles. March 2022 Maximum temp: 19.0C (66F) on the 20th compared with 21.8C (71F) in March, 2021. Minimum temp: -0.2C (32F) on the 6th compared with -1.3C (30F) in March, 2021. Average maximum temp: 12.06C (53F) in 2022. 10.79C (51F) in 2021. 10.50C (51F) on average. Average minimum temp: 3.93C (38F) in 2022. 3.73C (38F) in 2021. 3.30C (37F) on average. Mean temp: 8.00C (46F) in 2022. 7.26C (45F) in 2021. 6.90C (44F) on average. Air frosts: 2 compared with 1 in March, 2021. Rainfall total: 1.18" compared with 1.31" in March, 2021. (30year average (1981-2010) 1.85"). (2022 total is 64% of the average). Most rainfall on one day: 0.36" on the 30th. Wind direction: Mainly from: South-East 12 days, East 7 days, North-East 5 days and South 3 days. The beginning and end of the month gave us a reminder we had only just come out of the winter season. The first week's conditions and indeed the last three days had the feel of winter at times, sometimes locked under leaden skies of stratus cloud. Generally, the influences controlling our weather were very different to preceding months as easterly type winds predominated. Fortunately, the mid month period enjoyed a number of days when the position of high pressure funnelled winds from South of East resulting in sunny and mild
or even warm conditions at times. Just perhaps when we thought our spring was been established, a sharp contrast occurred on the 29th, 30th and 31st with not only the previous three weeks but also the comparative days of 2021. The 31st was notable as the coldest day of the month with maximum 1C lower than the 1st and the one day when snow and hail showers were observed after a cold front passed over us from the north. Overall, this was the mildest March since 2019. 29th March 2022, maximum temp 8.1C, 2021 maximum temp 19.3C. 30th March 2022, maximum temp 9.7C, 2021 maximum temp 21.5C. 31st March 2022, maximum temp 6.3C, 2021 maximum temp 21.8C. The 1.18" rainfall total made this was the third consecutive dry March, 1.31" noted last March and only 1.03" in the same month of 2020. This time in what was an often sunny and dry period during mid month, nearly 56% (0.66") of rainfall was recorded on the 30th and 31st. Immediately prior to these two days, due to the large area of high pressure, drought conditions had prevailed following the last rainfall noted on the 16th. After the first five days all recording modest rainfall totals, there were just three more noted during the next three and a half weeks. 1st April commenced wintry with a light dusting of snow on the ground and slight air frosts on 1st and 2nd. However as I write on 6th April, daytime and nighttime levels have improved to near or slightly above average. It is spring, so expect variability during the next few weeks.

Equal access to girls football festival towards males, and had two distinctive outcomes: Have fun and get active! Students from all three schools were selected specifically for the opportunity, which wanted to involve students who had no, or very little previous experiences of playing football, and young people selected by school staff aiming to see a positive impact from being more active. The event was also support by Suffolk FA, and was attended by Kirsty Smith, who is actively trying to create more inclusive football provisions across the county. Mr D Burton (Lead PE Practitioner) commented: "As a group of small, rural schools, we were keen to connect to create a unique opportunity and take our young female students outside of their comfort zone. All three of the SET secondary schools are developing provisions to allow females equal access to football, and this project was a great way to launch our work." Kirsty Smith (Suffolk FA) commented: "It was great to see the girls turn up and throw themselves into something that

they haven't done before. They all worked together and mixed with other students from other schools. Events like this are brilliant for students to take part in as they encompass physical activity, fun and social skills. It was great to be part of such an event and give the students the opportunity to do things they haven't done before." Mark Barrow (CEO of SET) commented: "As a trust, we were keen to create an opportunity for students within any one of our schools to feel part of something 'bigger'. This festival reinforced the collaboration between our schools, teachers, and more our importantly students." Quote from one of the students: "When I knew we were going to be playing football, I didn't really want to go, but my teacher asked me to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. I've had lots of fun, met some people from other schools, and enjoyed a day outside. I think I also got better at football!" The event was also supported by a group of student leaders, many of which had no previous experience of leading large groups of young people.

SouthGen's charitable objectives, set out in the Society's Rules, include: • Providing affordable housing and affordable work space, buildings and land to create jobs and training. • Providing, maintaining and improving public amenities including childcare. • Preserving buildings or sites of historic or architectural importance. • Providing an inclusive place for community association, social welfare and wellbeing programmes. • Advancing education and training opportunities, particularly for the unemployed. Danyal Sattar (CEO of Big Issue Invest) said: "We are so pleased to be able to support an organisation such as SouthGen. Coastal communities today face a particular set of challenges. The work SouthGen does in
offering shared community spaces is vital. I look forward to watching the organisation go from strength to strength!" Mick Walker (Treasurer for SouthGen) said: "This redevelopment is a project incredibly close to our hearts. We are so pleased to have had the support of Big Issue Invest, who have helped us get closer to making our project a reality. The BII investment has been essential in providing bridging finance for the capital works and initial revenue funding prior to SouthGen securing further revenue support - applications for which are currently in process." Following the impact of the pandemic, three high schools within the Seckford Education Trust (SET) wanted to create an event which aimed to engage more young females playing football. In line with the Football Association and Barclay's 'biggest ever football session for girls' (a national campaign), SET Ixworth School hosted just under 100 young females from their trust schools including SET Beccles and Saxmundham School. By 2024, The FA's and Barclay's ambition is for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys in schools and clubs. #LetGirlsPlay is a campaign to drive influence and change perceptions, showing that football can and should be played by girls. It's bringing together a growing community of people of all genders, ages and backgrounds who want to champion equal access for girls, helping create independent, resilient young girls who will be a force for good in all local communities. The event (held at SET Ixworth School) was focused on female students having equal access to a sport which is too often directed
Southwold and Waveney Valley-based community benefit society, SouthGen, has received £75,000 in funding from Big Issue Invest, the investment arm of The Big Issue. SouthGen is a charitable community benefit society that is democratically run by its members, on a one member, one vote basis, irrespective of how many shares they own. SouthGen was created out of a crisis - the closure of the local hospital, and the threat that this historic building would be demolished and redeveloped as luxury housing. At the same time, it looked like the popular library might be forced to close because its lease was coming to an end and a new home couldn't be found. SouthGen turned this crisis into an opportunity. The organisation was incorporated in 2017 to prevent the old Southwold and District Hospital from being turned into second homes. SouthGen then partnered with Hastoe Housing Association to become the first community group in England and Wales to buy back from the NHS the decommissioned community hospital and recycle it for new uses that promote the sustainability of a rural area on Suffolk's East Coast - and redevelop it as an affordable housing and a community hub. The investment from Big Issue Invest will help SouthGen's plans to redevelop
Halesworth Event Management have begun organising this year's Christmas Lights in Halesworth. For the last two years, due to the pandemic, we have limited ourselves to paying for and putting up the lights round town but have not held a switch-on event as in previous years. This year, as well as purchasing some new lights, we are planning a switch-on event in November. One problem we have is that due to Health and Safety and insurance concerns, we cannot transport Father Christmas up the Thoroughfare on his sleigh as usual but would still like him to process up the Thoroughfare as we know how the children enjoy seeing him. We'd like to transport him in a small, pony trap like cart which can be pulled by his helpful elves - a horse drawn cart would again raise safety and insurance issues! We are asking if anyone in the community has a suitable cart which could be borrowed for the occasion. If you want any more details or are able to help in any way, could you please contact Teresa Walsh in Durrants Estate agents in the Thoroughfare. While we've been helped over the last two years by grants from Halesworth Town Council and others, our fundraising has been virtually non-existent so this year more than ever, we'll be appealing for your support. By the time you read this, we'll have held our first fundraiser - an Easter Egg tombola on Saturday 2nd April for which we thank everyone for their support. Further fundraising events will be advertised on our Facebook page as well as the old fashioned way with posters round town.
