What's on at Halesworth Library? For those of you who didn't already know, the library is now very nearly back to normal! We're open for browsing, have daily newspapers and three public computers available to use for free. If you need to study or work, you can also bring your own laptop in. If it's peace and quiet you're looking for, Ali's garden behind the library is a beautiful space to enjoy the last of the summer sunshine and we now have a water feature which is delighting the children, so please bring them in to take a look and search the murals for their favourite fairy tale characters. This year's Summer Reading Challenge was a little quieter than previous years but still over seventy children read six books over the holidays and collected their medals and certificates to celebrate. Well done to all of them! Some dates for your diary: Every Tuesday, we have Wordplay for babies up to eighteen months. There are two sessions from 10am-10:30am and 11am-11:30am. Every Sunday, 12-2pm, there are free drop in activities for children. All ages are welcome but under-eight's must be accompanied. We're also re-starting our IT sessions hosting one to one

sessions on using laptops and iPads. £7.50 for thirty minutes, £15 for an hour. These are usually Monday mornings. Please book ahead at the library or by telephone. On 14th October at 6:30pm, The Friends of Halesworth library will be hosting their next AGM, so if you're a Friend of Halesworth Library, please do come along. Debbie from Realise Futures is back in the library alternate Fridays, starting 10th September. If you have spare time and would like to support the library, meet people and become more involved, why not join the Friends of Halesworth Library, our fundraising charity? Email: friendsofhalesworthlibrary@ gmail.com to find out more. Our Facebook page has daily news about library events and lots of other interesting posts. Search Facebook for 'Halesworth Library'. We're also online on Twitter (@HalesworthLib) and Instagram (@Halesworthlibrary). We look forward to seeing you! Email us at: halesworth.library@ suffolklibraries.co.uk or phone 01986 875095.

Financial focus on...
During lockdown, Liz Tinker and Susie Hammond worked on a variety of creative projects, pushing their own boundaries and lifting their spirits. "It gave us the time to experiment. This helped us stave off the blues and keep a positive direction!" Susie said: "We wanted to have a fair to show our work alongside local fellow artists and crafters. We have a variety of sculptures, lighting, prints, textiles, ceramics, homeware, knitting, felt hats, and jewellery for sale." A great opportunity for finding that unique gift, some inspirations, along with fabulous cake and refreshments from Vashti Mouncer, Dennington Neathouse. The Blaxhall October Art and Craft Fair is at Blaxhall Village Hall, IP12 2DX on October 16th and 17th from 10am-5pm. Entry and parking is free. Maps and photos on Facebook page.
under age 25 created by the parent's Will or intestacy or by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. Additionally, most pension scheme, retirement annuity, charitable trusts and most life policies held on trust are exempt from the new requirements, as are funds held as part of a 'commercial' business transaction for brief periods (eg under Escrow). Remember if the trust has had a tax liability (or is expecting one imminently), it should already be recorded on the TRS. Most commonly, the new registration rules will affect Will Trusts whereby one spouse left assets in trust for the survivor's use as part of standard Will
planning made prior to Gordon Brown's changes in 2006. Trusts created as part of divorce planning (for example, to allow one party the use of an asset but ensuring that ultimate ownership passes to, say, children) are also caught. Indeed, the new rules will require registration of something as simple as a Bare Trust. Registration must be done online either by the trustees or their agents and once completed, there is a legal responsibility to keep the TRS up to date. For further information, please contact Robin Beadle (pictured) on email: robin.beadle@ensors. co.uk.

The HMRC Trust Registration Service (TRS) has now been in existence since 2017 but until now, has largely been concerning itself with those trusts that have a tax liability. From the autumn of 2021, however, the TRS will be extended to all express trusts (with few exceptions) even if there's no tax liability or other reporting requirement. (This will also include non-UK resident trusts if they hold UK land or property). If a non-tax paying trust has not already registered, it'll have twelve months from the date that the online system goes live (September 2021) in which to do so. Unless your trust, settlement or arrangement falls into one of the very few exclusions below, you'll need to consider registration. The current list of exclusions from the new registration requirement only includes: • Co-ownership trusts where assets are held as "tenants-incommon" • Trusts created from a person's Will - Provided that all assets are paid out within two years of death • "Pilot" trusts of less than £100 in value which were created before 6th October 2020 • Trusts for bereaved children under age 18 or young adults

Woodbridge Cruising Club With the advent of autumn, the club cruises draw to a close, but there's a wealth of social events to tempt and entice members. Onshore activities are an important part of the club's calendar, and the annual summer barbecue was well attended, as over sixty members enjoyed catching up at the club's riverside premises. The cruise dinner is planned at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club, the laying up supper will be held at the club in October, when club walks are also resuming, as are the Wednesday suppers. Other activities include MAGs (the Monday Afternoon Group Get Together), which is an informal gathering for all members with afternoon tea, and the Wednesday morning maintenance parties, again with coffee and cakes. The last cruises of the season were Walton Pond, Blackwater, Ramsgate and the Four Rivers. If you fancy sailing in company, why
not join Woodbridge Cruising Club whether you own a yacht or motorboat. Cruises are organised by club members and thanks are due to everyone who organised them. The Blackwater Cruise was organised by John and Diana, and all fourteen boats had a fantastic trip with light winds. The cruise visited Brightlingsea, Heybridge, Bradwell, and West Mersea. Onshore entertainment included Colne Yacht Club's excellent dinner, a boat trip up the Colne to Rowhedge for lunch, a now traditional Kubb match (a Scandinavian game knocking down skittles by throwing wooden sticks). Members also enjoyed canal trips, barbecues, musical entertainment, pub dinners, and drinks in the West Mersea Yacht Club. The return passage was helped by a lively NW breeze which, combined with a favourable tide, enabled all to return to Harwich and onward to
News from Dunwich Heath this summer So the Summer holidays were as busy as ever for us and it was fantastic to have so many families and young people here enjoying the walks on the heath, trails and children's activities. The last was really well attended, with some fascinating creatures discovered. Two particular highlights from the depths of the pond during the pond dipping were a Great Diving Beetle larvae and no less than three Water Scorpions! Fearsome looking creatures and excellent predators, but the children were amazed rather than scared! The heather really came to the party this year, with the wet weather in July giving the blooms that extra oomph to create a glorious carpet of purple, as you can see from the picture. Our visitors were astounded, and in some cases a little emotional, at just how beautiful it was! The
home ports in record time. Five yachts participated in the further afield Ramsgate cruise, Ramsgate being the first harbour, with welcome safe arrival drinks on Aberration, and a meal ashore. Members enjoyed a rest day, exploring Broadstairs or Ramsgate, followed by an Italian meal, before setting sail to Queensborough - with delightful local markets to explore, trips to the Isle of Sheppy, and a welcoming yacht club. Boats then set sail for a night in Brightlingsea, before returning home. Thanks to the cruise captain Andy, who organised a great cruise, which everyone enjoyed. The club is not solely nautical activities, and there are a wide range of events throughout the year (nautical and land-based). If you're tempted by the activities, do check out the club website where full details are found: www.woodbridgecruisingclub. org. New members are always welcome, whether you own a motorboat or yacht or are just tempted by the club's activities.
heather is past its peak now, though still quite beautiful, so if you haven't seen it yet, you really must. In other news, our summer migrant species are heading for warmer climes, but we're now welcoming our winter migrants such as the Hen Harrier and the Crossbill. We can also look forward to the 'Rut' getting underway soon. It won't be long before the heath will ring with the eerie bellowing of stags proclaiming their territories... Or is that the bells of Dunwich's lost churches?

As Autumn heralds the return of many popular events, the Friends of Woodbridge Library host the first (for a long time) live poetry reading. We welcome Clare Best and Andre Mangeot on Thursday 21st October at 7:30pm. Clare has published six volumes of poetry, the most recent of which is 'Each Other (Waterloo, 2019)'. She's frequently worked with visual artists and last year held a Fellowship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she collaborated on operas and other vocal projects. She lives up the road on the edge of Tunstall Forest. Andre has three poetry collections to his name and his work has appeared in the Spectator, New Statesman and Times Literary Supplement. He's also published a couple of books of short stories. A former resident of Woodbridge, he now lives in Cambridge. Seats for the event are £8 (students £4) which includes an interval drink. To book your seats, please call the Library on 01394 330855. There will also be the opportunity to buy collections of their work.

The Common Ground Theatre Company
'The Dream of a Ridiculous Man' By Fyodor Dostoevsky - Adapted by Pat Whymark. Touring East Anglia from October 14th to November 20th, 2021. Having had (like all theatre companies) over a year of twiddling their creative thumbs, Ipswich-based Common Ground Theatre Company are gearing up for a joyous, yet cautious return to rural touring with their autumn tour of Dostoevsky's dream-like, redemptive tale. A fantastical story of new beginnings, featuring Julian Harries as the Ridiculous Man, with Pat Whymark and Emily Bennett providing live musical accompaniment. It tells the story of a man who (much like Scrooge in Dickens' A Christmas Carol) has a dream which saves his life, brings him back from the edge of despair, reconnects him to society and restores his faith in humanity. It's a poignant, funny and cathartic piece, particularly appropriate for this present moment in time. "It takes real skill to take a sturdy piece of classic literature and turn it into one of the most imaginative shows of the year." - Andrew Clarke, reviewing our tour of The Count of Monte Cristo in the EADT. For audiences' peace of mind, social distancing will be maintained for our performances. A one act play that is one hour long. A working group, under the Town Council, is being formed, to look at ways of ensuring that the town of Halesworth does as much as is possible to coordinate the efforts of all the interested groups who are eager to tackle the issues around climate change. Working with other Parish Councils, local businesses and people, we aim to work towards meeting the Council's challenging target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and making sure environment considerations are threaded throughout our policy and decision processes. Joining with other groups in the HUB, ensures that together we'll have more ideas, more energy and
national governments could do to mitigate and cut carbon. We: What our community could do. I: What I can do. Each tier would examine elements such as food, energy, transport etc. Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to contribute their ideas and suggestions of solutions or actions, and these we will collate and act upon, for a final Exhibition during in Library from 13th November to 27th November. When we can compare our wishes against the decisions of COP26. Keep a look out for our posters, and invitations to the exhibition. Searching for LOCALLY AGREED SOLUTIONS TO LOCAL ISSUES.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust
Edgar Sewter Playschool and Out Of School Club
The Blyth Valley and Southwold branch of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust were happy to be back with 'live' meetings after such a long time away. Our first talk was entitled 'Puffins Galore', presented by Simon Hooten. Simon has been visiting the island of Skokholm (off the coast of Pembrokeshire) since he was a schoolboy, and he gave a lively account of these characterful birds. It's a small island with a long history of rabbit and general farming, but today is owned by the Wildlife Trust, and is a bird and wildlife observatory. The surface of the island is fragile, with so many burrows. Visitors
are restricted to marked footpaths, but with so few people allowed (a maximum of twenty-six) there is plenty of space to enjoy the birds in close proximity. The Puffins arrive in late March, lay one egg in May that hatches in two-three weeks, and the young Puffling is fed by both parents in turn. When the chick is large enough to be independent, the parents abandon it in the burrow, and hunger brings it out to face the world and fend for itself. Gulls are serious predators, and the young birds need to keep their wits about them. As well as breeding birds, bad weather brings younger puffins onto the island

SALON
With having a week at the popup shop, the Ichameleon in the Thoroughfare from Thursday 16th September until Wednesday 22nd September - We're busy tempting you to spend your money at two outlets for a week! Do call in and take a look at the lovely items we have for sale. On Friday 17th September, we're having a cake stall too. Any donations of cakes or other home-baked items will be most welcome. Wednesday, we're running a tombola stall too at the pop-up shop, which is always popular - again, any suitable donations would be welcome Just drop them into either shop. Thank you! Bargains are to be had throughout Dee's Den now, as we say goodbye to summer stock and start to display our Autumn clothes, and with our well-known £1 rail outside on the pavement when the weather is dry! An excellent time to visit us. To reassure everyone the shop although small, is Covid safe, with a one-way system and all precautions in place to protect our customers and ourselves. We'll still strive to maintain a safe environment for us all. Please note: The main Dee's Den shop is now open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings 10am-1pm and on Wednesday,
supply of clean jam jars please. We continue to accept donations on Mondays and Thursdays 10am-1pm. Only bring two or three bags/boxes at a time and please DO NOT leave bags/goods at the door when we're closed. Everything needs to be clean and saleable. Just a reminder, we don't accept electrical items. Deliver items to the sorting end of the shop in Steeple End, you can pull up close to the door! Clean but worn clothing and bed linen is accepted too for recycling. Please mark the bags 'recycling'. Any donations of suitable gifts, tins and bottles for our tombola's would be much appreciated. We really value the continued support of this local charity by the local community. Every penny spent in the shop supports the work of the charity. The Pear Tree Centre continues to provide a variety of services, advice and support for the people living in East and North Suffolk and South Norfolk, who have a life progressive or life changing condition, also, where their families can seek help and support too. Phone the centre manager Seva and her team on 01986 899655. They're there to help you. We also provide additional care for those registered with Cutlers Hill surgery, enabling people to be cared for at home at end-of-life, so people can die at home if this is their wish. We couldn't function without our amazing shop volunteers. We welcome Lesley and Mary (no 2!) to our merry band of volunteers of: Linda, Eileen, Sue E, Pauline, Chrissie, Katy, Jane R, Chris, Gay, Valda, Erica, Anne, Bernadette, Sue B, Dawn, Noman, Ann, Susie, Dot, Irene, Viv, Anne, Cathy, Pam, Marie, Val, Felicity, Barb, Jane E, Mary, Maisie and Elsie. We say a very sad goodbye to Jill who's given many years of service in the shop. We'll miss you but wish you and your husband health and happiness in your new home. Can I also on behalf of us all involved with Dee's Den and the Pear Tree Fund say a very big thank you to Irene and Tony who have helped us for several years to bank the takings and present the shop accounts. Also not forgetting Glen, Heath, Maggie and Bob for your help and support too. If you're interested in volunteering in Dee's Den, please leave your name and contact details in the shop. Clothes, footwear and accessories of Dee's Den will be on show at our planned fundraising fashion show on Friday 12th November at the Pear Tree Centre (save the date) more details to follow. At night, Storm Petrels and Manx Shearwaters arrive. The latter are clumsy on land, and will only approach the island on the darkest of nights to avoid predation. They breed successfully, and Manx numbers on the island have risen to an astonishing forty-six thousand. As summer ends, the Puffins and other avian visitors prepare to leave on their long voyages across the seas, and the island is left to the peace and quiet

Now is the time to think about your child's schooling for the 2022/23 academic year. When selecting a school you need to: • Consider what is right for your child and family • Research the schools in your local area and gather information • Visit the schools and meet the staff – nothing beats seeing the environment and speaking with the teachers.

Stronger together! The school is very optimistic about the future as it celebrates and acknowledges the outstanding success of our students at ALevel and brilliant achievement at GCSE... All within the unusual context of TAGs - brilliant individual performances and many 'personal bests'. Our comprehensive entry means that we're congratulating the success of students who'll be moving on to Oxbridge as undergraduates along with those progressing into apprenticeships and other further/higher education destinations. This year has been unpredicted in terms of student and staff expectations and experiences and I've been delighted to see how staff and students have responded. The school's great

outcomes are testament to the hard work and professionalism of staff as well as the very positive and supportive relationships we foster with students, and families, which we know are important to enable young people to fulfil their full potential. I'm proud to be Headteacher of a comprehensive school which values achievement and success in its many and varied forms, academic and non-academic and I believe this ethos, coupled with our strong values, is why we continue to be in the position of being full in every year group, and achieving yearon-year growth in our successful sixth form. Our transition from Year 6 into Year 7,

and from Year 11 to sixth form, continues to improve with both academic and pastoral strands adding new dimensions as we strive for excellence. In the words of one of our students, we offer "brilliant teaching, enjoyable lessons and a supporting and motivating environment to learn in." Join us for our Open Evening and see for yourselves.

Treasured memories of our dear Dad who passed away on 17th October, 2000. We thought of you today Dad, but that's nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and days before that too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. All we have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake from which we'll never part. God has you in his arms. We have you in our hearts. We love and miss you Dad. All our love forever and always, daughter Barbara and son Dale xxxx

The Lions Club is up and running again, I'm delighted to say. Over the last 18 months, we've managed to support local families, but have not been able to fund-raise. We're thinking of ways forward. It looks as if we won't be able to run a Christmas Fair this year, but are hoping to get Santa out on his sleigh. Unfortunately, new regulations mean that he's no longer permitted to travel round in the sleigh. We hope to have him parked in various static locations, and hope you'll be able to come and see him. Full details will be issued as soon as they have been finalised. Further information about future activities will be given as we get back to sorting out a fundraising programme. Halesworth WI report Our first get together since the lockdown got off to a rousing start with members being entertained by the Rumpus Ukulele group. We enjoyed singing and clapping along to their exuberant music and they finished to a resounding burst of applause. Meeting at a new venue, the Rifle Hall, at a new time and on a new day, Thursday afternoons at 2pm. We welcomed members old and new, as we look forward to future planned events. Our September meeting will be an opportunity to meet a family of tortoises followed by a talk about medical detection dogs in October. We hope to be able to offer refreshments at future meetings.

Centre for hosting our latest Social. We had a delicious tea with cakes provided by the Brilliant Bakers and were also delighted to receive a cheque from Councillor Judy Cloke, Chair of the East Suffolk Community Partnership. Our Socials are a great opportunity for people who live alone to get together for a cake and a natter. If you'd like to join us for a social or know someone who you think would benefit from getting out and about, please ring the office on 875600. We must also thank our wonderful friends at Halesworth Golf Club who have made us one of their three charities for this year. On Sunday 12th September, they held a Charity Competition with amazing prizes awarded by Mrs Hunt and a fantastic raffle, brilliantly hosted by Rob Sherington. It was a hilarious afternoon and we're incredibly grateful to the Club for their amazing support. We were very saddened to hear of the death of our great friend and shopping legend, Mr Geoff Zoeller. Geoff was an absolute gent who had a fascinating life, lived to the full. We send our condolences to his many friends and family. We'd also like to pass on our condolences to all those who have lost a loved one recently. It's been a difficult few months for many of us. If you need any help or support, please contact us. Would you like to be a volunteer? We're always looking for volunteers and have some great volunteering opportunities. If you like driving, our Community Car Service is a rewarding way of meeting fascinating people and getting them to their medical and personal appointments. As a volunteer driver, you use your own vehicle but you are reimbursed for your mileage, you'll have opportunities for training and the chance to be part of a fantastic team. If you like to talk and enjoy the odd piece of cake, why not join our team of Isolation Busters? Being an Isolation Buster gives you the opportunity to befriend a member of your local community. You may end up going out for coffee, walking a dog or even going to the theatre or the cinema, whatever you and your befriendee decide. The wonderful team at the Community Larder always welcome new volunteers. The Larder is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am-11:30am. Anyone can use the Larder, it's a great place to bring your unwanted food and household goods and if money is tight, you'll always find the fresh food and tins you need as well as a welcoming chat from our wonderful volunteers. Community Partnership The Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and villages Community Partnership has recently awarded over £10,000 in small grants to local organisations. Nineteen applications were received and we've supported organisations including the INK Creatives Forum, Swell Music CIC and Halesworth Volunteer Centre. The Community Partnership
is made up of community organisations, town/parish councils and councillors. It prioritises projects that support our communities around social isolation, health and wellbeing and accessible transport. If you're a community group or have a community project, feel free to email: sam.kenward@ eastsuffolkcouncil.gov.uk to see if we can offer any guidance.
Cancer Research After our hugely successful Summer Fair in July, we're now looking forward to our next event. This will be our popular Jumble Sale (see our advert on the inside front cover). We'll be at Holton Village Hall as usual where our rails will have good-as-new clothing as well as bric-a-brac, books, toys, games, household linen, ladies, men's and children's clothing, shoes and handbags. We'll also be serving teas and coffees with scrumptious cakes. We're grateful for donations of
good quality items. If you have items for us, please give them to any committee members that you know or ring me to arrange collections. Please don't leave items at the Village Hall as we only hire it on the day, so are unaware of anything left there. It's great to be holding events again and we look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 16th October at the Village Hall. A date for your diaries: Our Christmas Fair is on Saturday 20th November.
musical director: Philip Simms, who has a long association with Suffolk and a colourful musical career. Philip continued the tradition of classical and sacred repertoire but often included 20th century and contemporary works. However after some years, the number of singers diminished and it became impossible to meet the running costs of the society. So eventually, very sadly, in October 2018, it was decided to cease operations. The committee decided to distribute the remaining funds to local choirs and choral societies with similar objects to those of the Voices. The committee decided to award the residual funds to Sing Out Yoxford (for an amplifier): Halesworth Community Choir (for their Spell Songs project): and the balance to Harleston Choral Society (for running costs). This process was completed in February 2021. It's very sad that the Voices are no more, but we do hope that by assisting these three organisations, that we're helping the choral tradition to carry on in the Halesworth area, and that people who want to sing can find somewhere where they will enjoy singing. John Ball, Chairman: Sarah Jordan, Secretary: Pedro Cockerton, Treasurer: August 2021

Halesworth Festival Voices was born out of 'The Festival Singers', directed by Christopher Bracewell. Chris was asked by the Halesworth Arts Festival to form a choir to sing major choral performances in 2001. Although the tradition of featuring a major choral concert at the Halesworth Arts Festival continued, Chris moved on, and Halesworth Festival Voices was formed in 2008, firstly under the direction of John Quine, and later directed by Ian Humphris, an accomplished BBC presenter, composer and tenor. Together with the help of another well-known musician, Tony Parsons, the newly formed 'Voices' went from strength to strength, and at its peak, consisted of over forty singers. Concerts and performances were held three times a year with varied repertoire and mainly consisting of classical and sacred works, and featuring many well-known professional and semi-professional soloists, and accompanists both local and national. Concerts often featured readings of prose and poetry by local actors and presenters. Ian included his own compositions and arrangements. Ian's enthusiasm often led to singing workshops and a range of social activities. After the death of Ian in 2012, the Voices acquired a new

The long and winding road hoped that construction work will commence during 2022. One important element of the contract between the trustees and Badger is that the new Facility must be completed before the last phase of the nineteen homes is completed and sold. Residents of Worlingham may well be aware that the former primary school was closed in 2013 and eventually demolished in 2015. Although the plot of land has remained vacant during this time, regular meetings of the trustees have been taking place, as well as negotiations with solicitors, Worlingham Parish Council, East Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council and latterly Badger Homes. It's truly been, in the words of Paul McCartney a "long and winding road".
News from Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats Protection October 2021
Our second fundraising event of the year was at the fabulous Framlingham Country Fair in August. It was a very successful event for us and our team of volunteers had a lovely two days meeting lots of supporters, old and new. The 'Soft Toy Everyone's a Winner' tombola was extremely popular and we're now looking for more soft toys to use for fundraising at future events. If you have soft toys in good condition that you'd like to donate, please contact us by email: fundraising@ framandsax.cats.org.uk or call us on the branch number. Toys must have a CE label. Thank you. Cat care: Destructive behaviours: The idiosyncratic habits of felines are often what attract us to them! Occasionally though, their behaviour can become destructive; scratching and clawing things they shouldn't, for example, or shredding curtains or a favourite item of clothing. Scratching helps cats shed their claw sheaths. This means they're helping you take care of them, as their claws will need less trimming. Scratching also leaves a visible and chemical
scent marker that identifies their territory. Cats that have access outdoors will use trees or fence posts to leave scent markers which proclaim their province. The scent marking may continue indoors too. Providing a satisfying alternative for your cat will discourage them from ripping through your precious household items. Try fabric or carpet offcuts, bark-covered logs, stout wooden posts or sisal fibre. Once your cat has discovered these fun, easy-to-scratch objects, they're less likely to go back to your furniture. Try out various locations for their scratching toys, trying both vertical and horizontal scratching posts. In the meantime, cover the areas you don't want damaged with smooth plastic or foil. Don't forget, if you think your cat is a little too destructive, get them checked over by your vet to ensure there is no underlying medical problem. Looking for a home: This is Shadow (pictured), a tiny, gentle little girl who's about two years old. She's been spayed, fully vaccinated and is ready to start a new life. Shadow loves fuss and to be groomed but does not
enjoy be picked up. She's come from a farm environment and would appreciate a quiet home with a garden and a loving owner. If you can offer Shadow her ideal home, please call us. See our website: www. framandsax.cats.org.uk or telephone 01728 723499 for more information about adopting cats in our care, how to become a member of the branch, event dates, neutering, cat-care leaflets, how to become a volunteer fundraiser or fosterer, make a donation and other ways you can support us. News from Woodbridge Riverside Trust The Tapestry Project Cake Sale 25th September, 2pm-5pm in The John Gibbins Gallery at Longshed. About two years ago, an idea started to take shape... It'd be wonderful to create a Tapestry to tell the story of the Sutton Hoo Burial Ship and of the local environs. Now, two years on, we have thirty-five tapesters bringing that idea to life. Thirty panels, each 3'x4', will illustrate the Ghost Ship's history, taking in elements of the history of Woodbridge and the river Deben, with the final panels featuring the construction, launch and sea trials of the replica ship currently being built by our sister charity, the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company. So far, nine tapestries are (or very nearly) completed. All thirty tapestries will need framing in due course to protect them, and we need to raise funds for that. The Arts Society of Woodbridge has kindly gifted money for six frames, and a private donor for one more, so twenty-three to go! Several tapestry panels will be on show at the Cake Sale, so do join us if you can, enjoy cake or savouries with a cuppa, or buy
some to take home (or both!) and help to support this amazing project. Deben Discoveries: Paintings and Pictures 23rd-31st October in the John Gibbins Gallery. This is a personal story linked to the story of the beautiful river Deben. Dr Dorothy Winterbon Wells (nee Smith) owned a converted boat cabin on stilts, know as The Puritan, at Felixstowe Ferry. The whole family would holiday there every summer. During the summers of 1966 and 1967, whilst staying at The Puritan, she decided to watercolour paint the river Deben from both banks on two very long scrolls of plain wallpaper. She walked the river banks and used a canoe or small dingy to access the different locations. Fiftyfour years on, these remarkable paintings, kindly loaned to us by her daughter Marion and her son Ed, will form the centrepiece of a celebration of the Deben in art. You'll be able to walk between the two linear pictures seeing both sides of the river. The exhibition will also feature other privatelyowned works, as well as works by local artists and photographers.

It's been an extremely hectic but successful summer at Alde Valley Academy (AVA). Our wholehearted congratulations go to our Year 11 students who have performed remarkably well in their GCSE assessments despite the extreme disruption caused by the pandemic. Our students have worked tirelessly alongside our dedicated staff to produce the high quality assessment material which provided the evidence required for the Teacher Assessed Grades. The progress and academic outcomes of our students continues to rise year-on-year. September has seen an 'unusual' start to the academic year with all students receiving two Lateral Flow Device Covid-19 tests at the start of the term. This has been no mean feat with record numbers of students in the school. Year 7 was again oversubscribed and we welcome new students into all year groups on a daily basis. To accommodate our rapidly growing school population, we've recruited six new members of staff and have restructured the middle leadership of the school to ensure
that we're continuing to deliver a high quality education every lesson of every day. In order to add to our high quality teaching facilities, we've refurbished the top floor of the east block and turned it into the maths department. Over the summer holidays, we've relocated the OASIS centre and have created a new library to instil literacy and our love of reading at the centre of all that we do. Please come along and see our fantastic new facilities at our Open Evening on Tuesday 5th October, 2021. Due to Covid restrictions over the past eighteen months, we've had to postpone a number of 'celebration' events including the Year 11 Prom and the Presentation Evening. I'm delighted to say that we were able to give our Year 11 students a great send off at their Prom on August 11th and we're looking forward to our Presentation Evening at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Tuesday 14th September 2021. Alde Valley Academy continues to be the 'School of Choice'. Dan Mayhew - Headteacher
Woodbridge Probus Our speaker at the September meeting was our Chairman Howard Davies, on forty years at the chalk face. From the peace of the Rhonda Valley to the rough side of Birmingham and a class of fourty-two, nine to ten year olds, was a pretty tough job for a brand new teacher. After three years, he had to temporarily give up because of his fathers serious accident and when ready to start again spotted an add for teachers in BAOR Germany where he spent the next twelve years in different schools. As he said, the best bit was automatically being a member of the officers
mess. We followed his journey to a happy conclusion of the head ship at Orford School and expressed our thanks and appreciation for a fascinating tale. Our next lunch is on Monday October 4th, 12:15pm at the Woodbridge Golf Club when our speaker will be member Kim Fisher. The beautiful title of his talk says it all: 'For the love of boats'. Kims life long passion has been boats (many of his own design) a talk we look forward to immensely. www. woodbridgeprobus.org.uk tells it all, or you can contact our secretary, Roger Brown on 07881 627591.

Our first meeting will be a visit from one of our Parkinson's nurses who will talk about her role and be able to answer any questions. In November, we'll welcome Annette Dunning to talk about 'Warm Homes' and in December, we'll celebrate Christmas with a meal at Wangford Plough.

The Trustees of the Worlingham Community Facility are delighted to announce that, after eight years, they are now the owners of the vacant plot in Rectory Lane that once housed Worlingham Primary School, the land having been legally transferred from Suffolk County Council to the Trustees at the end of August. What happens next? The next stage involves local builders Badger Homes, with whom the trustees and their solicitors have been in contact for some time. In exchange for the plot of land, Badger will be contracted to build a single storey Community Facility as well as their own development of nineteen houses. The facility will take up approximately 25% of the available land, being situated

AGM HDCF held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in August. It was attended by representatives of the Council and various welfare organisations, as well as members of the public. One of the jobs was to elect the committee for the new year. The existing committee members were re-elected, with Teresa Fyfe continuing as the Chair and Dave Rich as Secretary. Paddy Cox took on the roll of Carers' Representative. Fundraising HDCF has to raise thousands of pounds annually to enable it to carry out the main function of supporting families. We're delighted to hear of two people
running marathons to help us. Danny Mitchell will be running on 3rd October in the Chelmsford Half-Marathon. Later this year, Karen Prime will be running a virtual marathon and will be donating some of the money raised to HDCF. We're truly grateful to both these people for running on our behalf. We do hope people will feel able to sponsor either of these local heroes, and we'll let you know how they get on. Thoroughfare stall The committee ran a stall in the Thoroughfare on August 14th. The aim was to publicise our work, and we were delighted at the interest from people coming
past. Danny was there with sponsor forms for his marathon. We also had cakes, CDs and books for sale, and with the picka-square competition we took £206 for funds. Many thanks to all who supported us. The basket of fruit was won by Irene Thomas. Film at The Cut Following the September showing of the Cut, the next film show will be in November, and it's likely to be Downton Abbey and will be shown on Wednesday 17th Nov. For further information regarding HDCF, please contact us via: information.hdcf@ btinternet.com or call 01986 875444.

Now in addition to our already wonderful outdoor learning space, we've been lucky enough to receive a surprise addition to the Early Years garden. The charity organisation Halesworth Men's Shed have made a special story
telling chair to go outside with all the other lovely activities. Executive Headteacher Vicky Allen says: "The children can now choose to sit and read a book or tell each other stories. What a lovely addition to our outdoor learning." Representatives from the Men's Shed said: "We were pleased to be able to support the children in our community. It gives us great pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of the children playing on and around it!"

school children has ensured that a sense of joy and community has remained central to the project. Waveney and Blyth Arts engaged with creative professionals and local adults and children to highlight the beauty and fragility of nature and threats to wildlife, by using powerful and complimentary creative language and art forms. By adapting after lockdown, we enabled people to remain connected with creative outlets through the worrying and isolating months of 2020 and 2021. Not only did the dancers and choir members rise to the challenges of dealing with new technology and developing their creative input in isolation, but the teachers also had to find ways of enabling the seventy-five children to learn new skills and contribute their own unique voices. Our volunteer team found different ways to collaborate, learn new

A very special live performance and launch of a creative film 'Spell Songs in the Green' by Halesworth Community Choir with New Cut Dancers and local schools in collaboration with Waveney and Blyth Arts is due for its premiere in October. Join this celebration of the community in Halesworth, the beauty of its local nature and wildlife which, like all nature, is now fragile and threatened. The project (initiated by Halesworth Community Choir with Waveney and Blyth Arts) was intended to culminate in a live community-based performance involving all participants on Halesworth Millennium Green in June 2021. Due to the impact of Covid, the outcome is now a unique creative film with a longlasting legacy. The process of filming and recording the singers, dancers and

Volunteers wanted skills, raise additional funds, adapt budgets and timescales, and recruit new expertise in the form of filmmakers and sound engineer. With funding support from local and regional bodies, we appointed local filmmakers Koan Arts. Working with the project's creative director and choir leader Janet Koralambe, the fourty-ninestrong Halesworth Community Choir had to learn the spell songs online and record them individually as Covid kept them apart. The dancers included fourteen adult dancers from Company Cut Dance under directorship of Caroline Mummery, and seventyfive pupils from Edgar Sewter and Wenhaston Primary schools. School teachers, working with our team, taught the children their spell songs and the movements that would accompany them. The youngsters also tie-dyed their own t-shirts for the filming. The project is grateful to funders Halesworth Town Council, East Suffolk Council, Suffolk Community Foundation, Halesworth Community Choir, Halesworth Festival Voices, and The Cut. The premiere of the film is October 9th at 5pm with a second showing at 7pm. This will be a sell-out occasion and is not to be missed! Tickets £5, under 18's free. www.waveneyandblytharts. com/events.
Following on from a year when many services closed down, bact community transport continued to provide an essential transport service taking passengers for their important medical appointments and vaccinations. Services have now opened up for transport for other purposes and bact are keen for new volunteers to join us to help achieve our vital goals in stopping people from being lonely and isolated. Do you have a few hours to spare and could help us? We operate a volunteer car service and accessible transport on our minibuses and wheelchair accessible vehicles. These operate around the towns/villages of Lowestoft, Kessingland, Loddon, Beccles, Bungay and all the surrounding villages in between. We need more volunteers to help us, be it as a car driver, or in one of our minibus/wheelchair accessible vehicles. We like to keep journeys as economical as possible for our passengers and so finding volunteers in your area would be great for local passengers. Our volunteer driver, Paul says: "Having joined bact a couple of years ago and having moved to the area, it's really helped me get to know the area and to meet lots of lovely people. Everyone is always so grateful. One day, you can be taking someone to the hospital, another day, taking a group for a day out and another, taking someone to a day centre. No matter what the trip, you always feel as though you're helping someone and
brightening up their day." Bact provides training and all drivers must be DBS checked which is free for all our volunteers. Mileage expenses are paid at 45p per mile and guaranteed personal satisfaction! Manager, Debbie Blowers said: "We've lost many of our volunteers over the last year for many different reasons and to ensure we can offer a good service to our registered users, it's imperative that we seek new volunteers to join our organisation. It's a very rewarding way to spend your time and you get to meet lovely people who are so thankful for help with transport. It can also go a long way to keeping your car on the road." Volunteer Recruitment Officer, Chloe Andrews said: "We have some very exciting projects lined up for the next year to really help many people get out and about again after the pandemic, but we really need some help from volunteers to do this. Please do get in touch with us to find out more." If you think you could help for even just a few hours a week or would like to find out more, then visit our website: www.bactcommunitytransport. org.uk or ring us on 01986 896896/895665. Alternatively, you can come and see us at: Harmony House, Hillside Road East, Bungay, Suffolk, NR35 1RX. (Open: Mon-Fri 9am-4pm).
