Hawthorn blossom in Spring
Hawthorn blossom in Autumn
Why, what and how to plant a hedge Walls, fences and hedges are all ways we can mark the boundary to a garden or field but hedges are the best as they provide extra benefits. A hedge can be created with a single species of a shrub or tree or a selection of plants. They can be deciduous and give brilliant autumn colour or can be evergreen, not just the usual Leylandii or Laurel but also Holly, Privet and Yew (but remember the leaves and berries of Yew are poisonous to livestock and humans). Some plants are thorny (Holly, Hawthorn, Blackthorn) and so help to deter larger animals such as dogs, deer, foxes and two legged predators from pushing through. A well-grown hedge gives shade and provides a wind break in
an exposed spot, it will capture pollution and reduce noise from traffic and, like all vegetation, a hedge will help to sequester carbon, regulate temperature and mitigate flooding. Maybe the best thing about a hedge is the benefit it brings to wildlife and that will add interest and activity to your garden. A hedge provides a corridor across a piece of land that allows small mammals such as mice, voles and hedgehogs to move around safely hidden from predators. They can then search for food over a wider area, find mates and so extend their territory rather than be confined to a small patch of ground. The hedge may also provide food, flowers for bees and other pollinators, insects and grubs for birds and hedgehogs, berries and other fruits for birds, nuts for mice and squirrels. Frogs and toads may also find
food and take advantage of the cover provided by a hedge. www.transitionwoodbridge. org.uk/local-wildlife-corridors. The wildlife that is attracted will depend on the varieties of plants making the hedge. Any hedge will give shelter and provide nesting sites for birds but a hedge of native plants will be more useful. We are fortunate in the UK to have many native varieties that are beneficial to wildlife and we too find the blossom, berries and colourful autumn leaves attractive. The flowers on Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Dog Rose, Guelder Rose, Bramble, Holly, Ivy and Privet and the catkins on Hazel all feed bees and other pollinators at different times of the year. In autumn, Rose Hips, Yew, Holly and Hawthorn berries feed the birds. We can enjoy the
between November and March when the ground is wet but not waterlogged and it is chilly but not frosty or windy. The websites mentioned above give detailed advice on planting a hedge. You may need to protect the plants from deer and rabbits with plant guards but remove these after two to three years. The plants will benefit greatly if mulched with compost, wood chippings or bark to suppress weeds and help retain moisture. In droughts the hedge may need to be watered until it gets established. When it is well grown trim the hedge to an A shape or it can be 'laid' in the traditional way (see YouTube). If correctly managed, your hedge could last for hundreds of years! Making music fun in East Anglia Martlesham Brass would like to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. We hope that you were able to hear Martlesham Brass over the Christmas period. Our players were raising funds for our nominated charities, which were British Heart Foundation, Parkinson's - Ipswich and East Suffolk Branch and Brave Futures (Fresh Start, New Beginnings). We will report the amount raised next month.
blackberries and also hazelnuts but the mice and squirrels may find them first. Other useful varieties to consider are Field Maple, Buckthorn, Beech and Hornbeam. Suffolk Wildlife Trust (www.suffolkwildlifetrust. org) and The Woodland Trust (www.woodlandtrust.org. uk) give detailed information about the wildlife attracted to the blossom, leaves and fruits of the various plants. Livestock in a field appreciate the shade and shelter from wind and rain that a good hedge will give and animals like to browse on the variety of vegetation in a hedge and this enriches their diet. If you're thinking of creating a hedge or maybe replacing one then consider this wide variety of native species available from our local nurseries. But whatever you choose now is the best time to plant a hedge-anytime
Looking forward into next month, we have a Film Music concert on Saturday 10th February 2024, featuring our main band - there will be more details next month. If you'd like to learn to play a brass instrument, or if you already play and would be interested in joining us, please email: join@ martleshambrass.co.uk. Please note we operate a waiting list for new members.
At the moment, we're sending out free activity sheets by email/post, on the second and fourth Mondays of each month during term time, for children to enjoy doing with their family/ carers, instead of meeting in St. Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath. Last term, we heard about Mary who had a message from an Angel telling her that the baby she was going to have would be God's own son, Jesus. We then heard about Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and finally
SIBTON COUNTRY SUPPLIES LTD
we heard how Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem and visited by shepherds who saw him lying in a manger in a stable. If you have or look after a child/children of pre-school age and would like to receive our sheets, please give us a call on the telephone number below. We look forward to hearing from you! Happy new year to you all from Bright Stars! If you'd like further information, please contact Sonya and Maureen Burrows on: 01473 625196.

Woodbridge Shufflers host first Winter Cross Country event
Reviving the twinning arrangements between Woodbridge and Mussidan In 1973, Woodbridge Community Council (the predecessor to the Town Council) signed an agreement with the Town of Mussidan, in the Dordogne near Bordeaux, establishing a twinning between Woodbridge and Mussidan. Just how intensive this twinning was is lost in the mists of time. However, Woodbridge does have its Mussidan Place development to the north of Market Hill, and Mussidan have a 'Place Woodbridge'. However, whatever arrangements were in place have been dormant for a long time. Councillor Nigel Phipps, on a recent trip to France, arranged a meeting with the Deputy Maire (Deputy Mayor) of Mussidan to explore informally the future of
our twinning arrangements. The Deputy is keen to renew the link. And indeed, outside the Mairie (Town Hall), there is a red phone box and Royal Mail post box plus models of Big Ben and Tower Bridge. What is needed to revive the Twinning? If we are to revive twinning arrangements with Mussidan, and indeed other European countries, we need a small group of Woodbridge residents to step forward and help the Town Council carry this project forward. Woodbridge Shufflers hosted the start of the Suffolk Winter Cross Country series on December 3rd. Over 400 runners from clubs across Suffolk, braved the wet and cold conditions to run 8km around Sutton Heath, including 26 Shufflers. Many of the club members acted as marshals and provided refreshments for the runners which raised money for the Woodbridge Soldier Fund as a thank you for use of the facilities. Race Director Mike Ward was very pleased how it went. He said: "This is the first year for a new
course and all the runners had smiles on their faces at the end which is a sign of a good event. I'd also like to thank Rock Barracks and the residents at Sutton Heath on for allowing us to use the site to car parking and race HQ." There are five more events taking place around Suffolk over Winter. To take part in future races, you need to be a member of a running club that has entered the Suffolk Winter League. For more information about Woodbridge Shufflers, please go to: www.woodbridge shufflers.org.uk
U3A East Suffolk
As the days lengthen, U3A members are taking full advantage! Once Christmas is over and the New Year is with us, members of U3A East Suffolk are out and about, filling the slightly longer days with activity. They'll be at lunch clubs, in walking groups, quizzing, practicing foreign languages, discussing arts and sciences and making new friends and memories. The more than 2,500 U3A East Suffolk members (older people, mostly retired or semiretired) have joined this thriving organisation with a view to
getting the most out of life. In addition, each month there are four speaker meetings at venues in Kesgrave, Woodbridge, Felixstowe and Saxmundham. In January members can enjoy talks about the history of fish and chips, the statues of Ipswich, Lake Garda and intriguingly a talk entitled "How to sell the Eiffel Tower", all about famous frauds. In February, members can hear about aviation at Martlesham, a career in police helicopters, the life of Benjamin Britten and
learn about forensic biology. Full information is available on the u3a website: www.u3aeastsuffolk.org.uk. New members are welcome, with the expectation that they will contribute to the success of the group. Membership is on an annual basis, costs less than £20 for a full year and gives members access to all the organisation's many activities. For more information about U3A, please see the website or call the secretary on: 0300 123 3913.

Find and Suffolk Singers - Giving with Song On January 20th, Suffolk Singers together with the Suffolk based charity, Families in Need (FIND), will present a fun concert 'Giving with Song' under the direction of Claire Weston, Suffolk Singer's Musical Director. It will be in Woodbridge's Community Hall, IP12 1AU, commencing at 7:30pm. This year will be the fourth concert in which Suffolk Singers has supported FIND to raise funds for this much needed charity. The 'Giving with Song' concert tickets are £15 which includes a light supper (bring your own drinks) and are available from: 01449 7111139 or: www.wegotickets. com. Advance booking is advised. Who are FIND? Families in Need (FIND) was established and registered in 1990
by Maureen Reynel, MBE to help those that are deprived of a minimum standard of living. It does so through a wide scope of activities by offering food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and nappies, beds and bedding, and, when available, cookers, washing machines and refrigerators. All of these freely given. Personal support is also given if and when it is appropriate. The demand on the charity increases year by year. For example 3,847 food parcels were distributed in 2018, rising to more than 7,600 during 2020 and 2021. In 2022, FIND helped over 6,000 adults, double the number helped in 2017. FIND strive to work harder every year to bring comfort to the lives of thousands of children and families in poverty. The structure
of the process is via a small band of committed volunteers who willingly give their time, inspired by Maureen Reynel who has committed her life to this worthy project. How this works: Food parcels: The volunteers sort donated food, collect from local stores, make up the parcels and then deliver them to individuals and families in crisis. Toiletries and personal care items are also provided. All those who receive food parcels are referred by local agencies for FIND's support. Furniture and household items: FIND regularly steps in to help both individuals and families with no money to purchase even the most basic personal items. FIND has a furniture store where each week volunteers pick up items and deliver them to individuals
or families in need. To continue this service, FIND need donations of furniture and other household items in good order. Alternatively, they welcome cash donations. Support for rough sleepers: FIND helps in many ways, providing footwear, clothing, warm coats and sleeping bags, paying for prescriptions, help with travel and providing food parcels. In addition, there is a small fund that enables them to help in paying for emergency accommodation for rough sleepers. To sustain this service, there is a continuous need for donations of items in good condition (warm clothing, strong footwear, coats, sleeping bags) or again, they welcome cash donations. For more information, visit: www.findipswich.org.uk and: www.suffolksingers.co.uk
Jeremy Hunt recently presented his Autumn Statement, setting the scene for the tax year to come and with some changes applying much earlier. National Insurance (NI) cuts were at the forefront of the announcements. For the selfemployed, Class 4 NI, payable on profits between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, will be cut from 9% to 8% from April 2024. In addition, Class 2 NI, currently payable by the selfemployed, will be abolished from April 2024. Payment of Class 2 NI was previously a qualifying factor for benefits such as State Pension. Moving forward, those earning over £12,570 (and therefore subject to Class 4 NI) will continue to earn a qualifying year. Those earning between £6,725 and £12,570 will also earn a qualifying year, despite no longer having to pay NI. For those with profits less than £6,725, the option to voluntarily pay Class 2 NI to earn a qualifying year will remain, the rate remaining frozen at its current level of £3.45 per week for 2024/25. The main rate of employees' Class 1 NI will be cut from 12% to 10% from 6th January 2024.
Alongside this, the National Living Wage will increase from £10.42 to £11.44 an hour from April 2024. For the first time, this will apply to 21-year-olds, having previously applied to those 23 and over. Businesses will need to be prepared to implement these changes, both in terms of budgets and payroll software. The income tax rates and thresholds for 2024/25 will remain frozen at the current rates, as previously announced in the March budget. The personal allowance will stay at £12,570 and the higher rate threshold at £50,270 until April 2028. Whilst the rates remain frozen, assuming earnings increase with inflation, this represents an underlying tax increase, the so-called 'fiscal drag' effect. For sole-traders and partnerships considering use of the cash-basis method of accounting, the turnover threshold of £150,000 has been removed entirely. Cash-basis can be a simpler method than the traditional accruals method and relates largely to actual funds received and paid in the year, but for that reason it won't be right for all businesses, for example
those with fluctuating cashflows and profitability levels. There are also some restrictions to the tax reliefs available, therefore anyone seeking to make a change should consider the implications carefully. For companies, full expensing of qualifying plant and machinery (offsetting the full cost of the capital equipment against trading profits) was made permanent. Overall, an interesting bag, with perhaps more to come in the spring. By Liz Lockwood (pictured below), Manager, Ensors Accountants LLP

Leiston Film Theatre
Adrian Ramsay calls to back small businesses and help our market towns
All aboard a magic carpet to Pantoland this January! Team B Productions invite you on a magic carpet ride to Old Peking in January, when they bring you a fabulous family Pantomime worth wishing for. Aladdin appears live at the Leiston Film Theatre from January 12th to the 14th, 2024, with demand for tickets so high, seats for some performances are already limited. When the wicked Abanazar learns of a magical lamp that could transform him into the most powerful sorcerer in Pantoland, he tricks Aladdin into retrieving the lamp from a cave. But when a glamorous Genie appears, an adventure begins that will see Aladdin, the Twanky family and the beautiful Princess Jasmine in a battle between good and evil. The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and is being brought to the stage under
his 'Team B Productions' title - a group of experienced am-dram performers, whose previous sell-out successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe. The group have recently enjoyed huge success with a three-night, sell-out run, with their Pantomime for grownups, 'Sleeping Booty' and work is already underway on their next family Pantomime for January 2025 and a brand-new comedydrama for September 2025. Aladdin promises another fun-filled family pantomime, packed to the panto brim with toe-tapping tunes, a huge helping of audience participation, and plenty of laugh-out-loud slapstick fun. Wayne Burns (Leiston Leiston Film Theatre Manager & Pantomime
Director) is looking forward to bringing Aladdin to the stage. "Aladdin is one of my all-time favourite Pantomimes and the entire cast and crew can't wait to bring our brilliant script to life on stage and perform for such appreciative crowds. Our audiences are in for a real treat" he said. The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the musical director and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of
Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime extravaganza. Aladdin will be appearing live at the Leiston Film Theatre on: • Fri 12th Jan: 7:30pm. • Sat 13th Jan: 3pm & 7:30pm. • Sun 14th Jan: 11am & 3pm. Limited tickets are now available, priced: £17.95, £16.95 and £14.95. Book your seats today on 01728 830549 or online at: www.leistonfilmtheatre.co.uk.
Green Party co-leader and Waveney Valley MP candidate Adrian Ramsay is calling for a swathe of Small Business Saturday measures to help independent firms and the rural economy in the East. Adrian said: "As the Green Party MP candidate here in the Waveney Valley, I've been talking regularly to traders and small business owners in towns such as Eye, Bungay, Halesworth, Stowmarket and Diss and just last weekend, I met shopkeepers in Harleston during the Christmas Market. It's crystal clear each time I meet them how important small, independent businesses are to the economies of our market towns in the Waveney Valley and the wider Norfolk and Suffolk area. They are a big part of what makes those towns so special. Small businesses employ more people per square metre than giant stores, use more local suppliers and reinvest more of their earnings into the economy of market towns like Harleston than corporate chains whose profits go to remote shareholders. Yet there are many ways in which our country's tax, planning and transport system gives big businesses unfair advantages over smaller ones and, in doing so, undermine the economy of our market towns in Norfolk and Suffolk. For example, out
of town stores pay no business rates on their car parks, giving them effectively cheaper rates per square metre than small independent shops in town. Overseas-based online retailers can avoid VAT. To lift customer numbers for small businesses without increasing congestion, we need proper funding to restore and improve bus routes that connect villagers with their nearest market town. The government have reined back on its plan for bus funding, leaving people more and more dependent on cars to get town. Buses are a vital public service that bolster employment and the economic life of market towns and need to be funded accordingly. Small independent shops in towns and villages are losing customers and potential staff to urban areas as younger people are being priced out of housing and so move away, as a report from the Council for protection of Rural England revealed earlier this week. So, we need planning policies that encourage t r u l y affordable homes to be
built. Independent traders and tradespeople need access to electric vans on the same terms as large companies. Small businesses that I speak to all the time in the Waveney Valley want to green their businesses but can't do this without help. On top of that business owners who want to invest in insulation or solar panels risk having to pay higher business rates, because the rateable value of their property may have risen. There should be incentives for doing the right thing, not penalties. The Green Party's alternative Autumn Statement identified £30 billion that could be raised by making the super-rich pay a little more tax. Just £3 billion of that could be used to double funding for Green Transition Grants - to help small businesses prepare for and make the most of the opportunities of greening the economy."

JANUARY 3RD 'CONSTABLE THE PAINTER WHO COULD NOT GET ARRESTED' TALK The Salvation Army Citadel The next monthly meeting of the Ipswich Group of the Suffolk Family History Society will take place on January 3rd at 7:30pm where Kim Smith (Dedham Vale Tour Guide) presents a talk titled: 'Constable the Painter who could not get arrested'. The talk provides an insight into the life and times of Suffolk Artist John Constable, with a surprising link to a modern celebrity. Despite his status as arguably Britain's greatest landscape artists, he sold few paintings in his lifetimes and was dogged by professional and private bad luck in his life. Admission is £2 per person for members, and £3 for others. Pay at the door. There is no need to pre-book, just turn up in good time. Starts at 7:30pm, ends at about 9:30pm. You can join the Suffolk Family History Society at this event if you wish. Society membership is only £12 for a family at one address. If you are over 60, it costs £10. She's been married to two other members of the Guild - firstly to Charles Holly Hall, and later to Mike Gunnell. This talk is about her lifetime interest in aviation art. Not only because of her personal links, but also meeting other well-known aviation artists over many years, and with a family link to an aviation ancestor, who was involved in

Method: - Preheat the oven to 200ºC/180ºC fan/gas 6. - Grease and flour a deep, round 18cm, loose bottomed or spring form pie tin. - Line tin with one sheet of shortcrust pastry and spread ½ jar Perfect Party Pickle across the base. - Fill with layers of ham, Perfect Party Pickle, turkey, stuffing and cheese, until the tin is full. Ensure you pack in the layers, pressing them into the pie as you go. - Cut a lid, using the pie tin as a guide, place this on the top of the pie and crimp around the edges. - Cut festive decorations out with the pastry off-cuts and arrange these on top of your pie. - Glaze the top generously with egg wash and cut a hole in the top. - Bake in the oven for 1 hour, (check and add tin foil over top if catching after 40 minutes) until golden brown. - Allow to cool inside the tin and serve hot or cold for Boxing Day lunch.

Once again, it has been an interesting and challenging year with economic and political uncertainty. Naturally, our thoughts are with those who have been and still are being affected by conflict in Ukraine, Gaza and across the world. We have seen communities pull together to do what they can to help - be it a fundraising campaigning for peace or donating aid parcels. We all hope for a swift and peaceful end to these terrible wars. At home, we have seen the continued cost of living crisis. Again, communities have come
together to support those most in need with food banks and warm rooms amongst other local resources and initiatives. Please do continue to donate and support local causes where possible. No doubt, these are tough times, but we are fortunate to live and work where we do. It is a place where friends, colleagues and neighbours are always there to look out for each other with a friendly face, an ear to bend or a shoulder to lean on when needed. However, there have also been lighter moments this year. One of these highlights has to have been the Coronation of King Charles III in May. For most of us, it was our first experience of a Coronation and whether you are a royalist or not, it was a chance for our communities to come together and celebrate... which we did in style!
Sports fans will have been fantastic Christmas and healthy glued to a thrilling Ashes series and happy new year. See you in and the blue half of East Anglia 2024! enjoyed seeing Ipswich gaining David, Karen, Polly, promotion from League One to Kasey & Gemma the Championship where they are (the Community News team) currently flying high and sitting in 2nd, who knows, perhaps this time next year we'll be cheering on a Premier League team! Hopefully, you are looking forward to spending some time with family and friends this Christmas to enjoy good food and company. As you finish your Christmas shopping and with the January sales around the corner, please do continue to support the fantastic independent businesses within our community. They are the lifeblood of our towns and villages so let's make sure we support them where we can. Finally, we'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a

News from Framlingham Fellowship Our October meeting was a very interesting talk and presentation by Sophie Green regarding the Girls of Little America: The Role of American Women and the 8th American Air Force in England during the WWII, a story many of us were not aware of. 17,000 American women answered the call of duty and
these ladies were part of US Women's Army Core, US Army Nurse Corps and the American Red Cross and all helped with the operation of the 8th Airforce based at the various airfields here in East Anglia. Our thanks to Sophie for sharing her expert knowledge on this with us. When we left our building that afternoon, after sorting items for our sale, no one had any idea what would happen the next day. As a result of Storm Babet the building was completely flooded out, everything was under water and the next day the water receded leaving a muddy sticky slimly silt over everything. Since then,
everything from the building has been removed and placed into skips and we now await the drying out process etc. Therefore, our November meeting couldn't be held in The Westbury Centre and our very grateful thanks to Rev Chris Davy for allowing our group to meet in the Church, we were to have a demonstration from Shiela at Callendar's Florist but unfortunately, Sheila was ill so we had a Christmas quiz and discussed the future meetings. The church boiler was also not working and our thanks to Ian Moore for providing us with heat. We are pleased that our January
meeting will be in the Venue Room at the Castle Inn and will include Lily Benbow, Director of Noble Prawn Ltd - private chef - Dinner parties/Home Delivery Suppers/Canapes/Pop-ups across East Anglia and Europe, locally based. Lily will chat about her locally based private chef business. How it all started - From Farmers daughter to Detective to Chef in a few easy steps. Our thanks to The Castle Inn for providing us with a venue. Our February meeting which will include a talk about Hearing Dogs with Jean and her dog, Tess which will be in The Stables at The Crown Hotel, our thanks to Gabriella for providing this. Our meetings are open to all, include refreshments and we look forward to seeing new faces in 2024, meetings start at 2:30pm. For further information please email: framlingham-suffolk@ sja.org.uk We look forward to welcoming our speakers to our meetings in 2024, which include Ruth Goudy, chair based yoga and a visit to Scarlett and Mustard factory. Framlingham Fellowship would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the last year and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Watch out for wildlife this Winter As January gets under way and you start to think about this year's growing season and your plans for your garden or outside space, factor in some features that help attract wildlife. Whatever the size of your garden, creating a wildlife friendly habitat is simple to do and can attract a host of garden visitors. Small creature friendly features that will attract and sustain wildlife can be incorporated into any outside space - and are relatively easy to maintain. One simple solution is to create a mini woodland with trees and shrubs or plant a hedgerow. Natural hedgerows are long lasting, wildlife friendly and sustainable alternatives to garden fencing. In addition to providing cover and food for nesting birds, hedges left to flower and fruit with berries will also provide a valuable source of food and shelter for other wildlife. Traditional hedgerows contain several different plant varieties like hawthorn, hornbeam and dog rose. January can be a difficult month for wildlife as natural sources of food are in short supply, so it's important to ensure that bird feeders are regularly topped up and water supplies are fresh and not left to freeze. In severe weather, the RSPB advises putting out high-energy, high fat food for birds twice a day (in the morning and early afternoon) to keep up with demand. It's also the Big Garden Birdwatch this month (January 26th-28th) which encourages you to count the birds you see in your garden, balcony
