The National Rally is fast approaching and I am hoping for a god turnout from our members. From reading reports on such platforms as Facebook I believe that our members are enjoying the group rallies celebrating things as varied as Burns night, Valentines and Mother’s Day to mention just a few. If you have not yet tried a rally then why not do so, you will always be made very welcome. Other Club events coming up include Members Casual Campsites, the FICC Rally and the European trip post the National. As you can see there is much to enjoy, just look in the magazine and handbook for details. Our recruiting team spent a successful week at the NEC this year a busy time for the team who got information about the Club out into the wider audience. I hope that all members enjoy using their motorhomes over the coming months.
Kate Jones Club ChairmanPlease be aware that the information about any of the sites listed in the Handbook is correct at the time of printing. This is especially true of site fees, which are subject to change due to the rise in running costs being incurred by site owners. We do print CL updates in the monthly magazine – but only if we have been made aware of them by the site. To be absolutely sure that you have the latest up-to-date information about any site we strongly advise you to check with the site before booking.

A Club member, Trevor, has been in touch with this useful tip – he writes his membership number on the application form in the magazine, where it indicates 'introducing member' and then pops it through
the letter box of anyone who has a motorhome standing on their driveway! That way, they get to read about the Club and he gets his £10 for introducing them when they sign up – and some have!

Paul Duly
It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Paul Duly passed away in his sleep on Friday 27th February. Many of you will remember him as "Paul – I never win –Duly”, although having uttered those words his luck in raffles did improve! Paul and his late wife Gill, were regular ralliers and enjoyed joining in all the fun. Paul found it hard to get to rallies after Gill died, but he visited whenever he could and kept in touch. Both Paul and Gill will be greatly missed. We send our sincere condolences to Paul’s family.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you to our National Rally and we want to do our very best to make sure you have a good time. There are lots of activities that you can take part in, some of which are listed below. The details of dates, time and place will be in your programme – so do read it carefully.
We will be holding a “gathering” on Thursday for you to come along to ask any questions about the National rally, meet other first timers from different Groups and meet some representatives from the Council of Management.
This year, there will be a second first-timers drop-in session on Saturday, for those who arrive after Thursday and to give all first time National ralliers another chance to come back with any questions that may have arisen. Of course, you can ask those questions at any
time – your Group Marshalls and the National Rally Working Team will be happy to help.
Chance to meet with people who hold various responsibilities in the MCC
• Scribes – come and meet Mark, our magazine editor, and Sue, our Magazine and Handbook coordinator
• Enjoy rallying? Two meetings for you to come and find out more about:
• Casual Campsites – meet Ann Bond, our Casual Campsite organiser
• FICC – meet Les Kendrick, our FICC representative
• Health and Safety – Are you responsible for health & safety for your Group? Or are you interested in health & safety issues? Come and meet Keith Poole, our Health & Safety Officer.
• Disability – A chance for anyone to come and discuss disability issues with Keith Poole, our Disability Advisor.
• The Homecraft competition –various sections covering different crafts and artwork. All the details are in the 2022 Handbook p73 -76. You do have to be rallying at the National to enter any of the Individual categories.
• The annual Fun Dog Show is a chance for members to “show off” their beloved canine pet. Dogs are welcome at our National Rally, though only Assistance Dogs will be allowed in the halls.
The Party Night theme is 'films' and it is hoped that Groups will participate in decorating their tables and wearing costumes in line with the theme. There is no individual allocation for Groups and it is intended that the theme is common across all Groups. (Please note, table decorations must not be above a height of 30 cm (12 inches) to avoid blocking other members’ view of the entertainment).
Various activities run throughout the rally: informal gatherings when a member will share their craft skills and you can try something new. Watch the notice board at the rally for place, time and craft – you may need to sign up for each session and some sessions may have a small charge to cover materials.
Your Group are invited to take part in this quiz – all you need is a team of four members from your Group to take part. Speak to your own Group Committee or Marshalls about getting a team together.
Sammy Snail Club
A club especially for our Junior members, run by Maria and Gill. Lots of fun and activities and a good place for our younger members to make friends.
Your chance to sell items you no longer require. The item must be worth at least £10. You will need to collect and complete a Silent Auction form. Then just bring the item/s along to the hall on Saturday.
A chance to have a table with items to sell. The proceeds can be for your Group Charity, a Charity of your choosing, or for yourself if selling items you have made. You can run a tombola, gift stall, craft items… the list is endless, but please make them items of good quality.
Unfortunately, the person who has run the boules competition in the past is unable to do so this year. We are looking for someone who would organise boules at Malvern, but have been unsuccessful in doing so. Can you help? If you can, please contact Anne Taylor, National Rally Chairman, phone: 07414 852497, or email: annet@ themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk.

As requested by the sites being visited this year, bookings will again be required. This ensures members will have a pitch on arrival also keeping to the terms of contracts, which is paramount.
All the above CCS are full payment in cash to the MCC hosts on arrival to sites. The sites’ T&Cs must also be observed during our stay.
I would kindly ask all members to check their diaries before making bookings for either of these casual campsites.
Ireceive more requests from members to recommend small easilydriven motorcaravans than for any other type. When we started motorcaravanning, base vehicles’ DNA were very commercial. Cab creature-comforts were scarce, with windscreen washers and heaters extra-cost options. Clutches felt heavy, the ride was bone-
jarring, and performance from underpowered petrol engines and asthmatic naturally-aspirated diesels, was best described as ‘leisurely’. Now the UK’s bestselling vehicle is not a car, but a van - Ford’s Transit Custom. Many feel that this is indicative of the warpfactor improvement in commercial vehicles’ driving experience. That said, some members have confided in me that they find the sheer bulk of most motorcaravans intimidating. Others just want to
explore down the narrowest of country lanes, or want to downsize to something more appropriate after the death of a partner, or after suffering a debilitating illness.
[1] shows the cab in a petrolpowered Citroën Dispatch van… it is identical to that in cars and people carriers built on the same platform. On this size of motorcaravan all-electric propulsion is perfectly practical for many.

Mill Park is a sheltered caravan and camping site set around a sparkling 1.5 acre lake. Located in an attractive wooded valley on the north Devon coast, it is perfectly situated for coastal walks, fun seaside activities and the breathtaking beauty of Exmoor. Mill Park offers good sized level grassed and hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups, fully serviced pitches, a motorhome service point, modern shower blocks, laundry room and camping supplies. There is an on-site family room and pub plus a well-stocked shop. The nearest village, Berrynarbor, is just a five minute walk and offers a country pub, village store and post office.
LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay!
LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are
welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

experienced motorcaravanner and gives an informed account of a recent extended tour of Scotland in one of his ingenious all-electric motorcaravans. (www.wheelhome. co.uk/vikenze-111-e)
Storage is likely to be limited, the trick is to buy equipment that fits the available space [2] and to use as many dual or multi-purpose items as possible. Make-up the bed(s) to make sure that they are big enough and comfy. [3] shows the generously-sized single-bed in the Wheelhome Vikenze. Some conversions of smaller vehicles rely on the travellers standing outside in order to cook or wash-up [4 - Caddy California]. OK in high summer, but more challenging in the ‘shoulder seasons’.
First, when considering a purchase, work out if is it possible to easily undress/dress inside the motorcaravan with the bed deployed…and if this matters!
Probably unwise to undress in the showroom, so role-play instead. Finally, some of these delightfullycompact leisure vehicles may look expensive at first glance, but remember that one is purchasing both a motorcaravan and a car.
We recommend you take a close look at the following inspected and evaluated motorcaravans and suggest you add them to your shortlist! Note that OTR prices are for guidance only and subject to change.
The ubiquitous VW Caddy doesn’t need an introduction, but the California conversion does to newer members. Its USP is that the base vehicle manufacturer has designed and built it resulting in a more integrated automotive ambience, and no arguments over whether the blame for any fault should be laid at the door of the base vehicle manufacturer or the converter! This is the most basic of our featured conversions, and also the most focussed. The VW options list is legendary for its length, thus it is easy to inflate the windscreen price. Sleeping accommodation is provided by a fold-out longitudinal double-bed (1.98m x 1.07m/ 6’ 6” x 3’6”). The kitchen slides out from the tailgate aperture and consists of a single gas-hob, a preparation tray, the cutlery drawer and…well that’s it really! The standard 120bhp turbocharged petrol engine is both spirited and frugal and it’s great to have the (extra-cost) option of VeeDub’s highly-regarded DSG automatic transmission. Driving the Caddy California is identical to driving the passenger version, and with an overall height of just 1.86m (6’ 1.25”), there is unlikely to be a height barrier it can’t shimmy under.

Nu-Venture are no longer ‘nu’, they’ve been designing and building motorcaravans for many decades. Based in Wigan, they have completed all sorts of special projects over the years, but their ‘strong suit’ is building luxurious, highly manoeuvrable, slim coachbuilt motorcaravans. In addition, they seem to be able to manipulate the laws of physics in that the interior feels far larger than the exterior. A neat trick! Rio is available with a side habitation door (SD) as photographed; or with one centrally-placed in the rear panel (RD). Both feature a socially-inclusive forward lounge consisting of a single Pullman dinette on the nearside and an inward-facing settee on the offside. The full-size wardrobe is ahead of the nearside rear-corner wellequipped washroom with shower and cassette loo. Top-tackle kitchen is placed forward of the entrance door and also along the rear wall. Standard base is the Citroën Dispatch, though the Peugeot Expert is available as an alternative. As you will be dealing with the folk who build them, it is possible to make suitable alterations, such as replacing the Pullman dinette

In a nutshell
Carefully thought-out layout, eminently suitable for extended tours
I first tested one of Wheelhome’s ‘garageable’ motorcaravans back in the mid 1990's. They were impressive then and are even more so today. There is nothing quite like them (see ‘In a Nutshell’ below). Currently, the base vehicle of choice is the versatile five-door Vauxhall Combo. Two versions form the basis for the Vikenze. The petrol-powered Life and the battery-electric E-Life, which is the subject of this review. Currently it is available with two travel seats
and a large longitudinal single-bed, though a four travel seat/doubleberth version on the LWB Combo is in the pipeline. Layout places the kitchen along the nearside, with the cab passenger seat just ahead of the Waeco compressor fridge. Cooking is all-electric with an induction hob and microwave oven. These can be quite power-hungry - but fear not - the Vikenze is equipped with a Lithium-ion power bank in lieu of a standard leisure battery. The powerful 300W solar panel, a 'mine’s bigger than yours' inverter, and charging via a 230V hook-up should satisfy most users ‘current needs’.
Go for it
• Clever use of interior space including wind-down wardrobe
• Loo available with the bed deployed
• Well-equipped base vehicle as standard
• Genuinely ‘all-electric’
Bear in mind
Long journeys completed in a single day will require planning ahead. That said, the proven 170+ mile range on a single charge might be plenty for many members

In a nutshell
As Wheelhome proprietor Stephen Wheeler often says, “You can’t get more car-like than a car.”
Piccolo is a first for Showroom Selection because it hasn’t been examined in detail. However, I have driven the base vehicle and tested a Wellhouse conversion on a Mazda Bongo, that had pretty much the same layout. Prototype Piccolo is included because if the guide price is achieved, it has the potential to be a game-changer, putting a zero-emission motorcaravan within the financial reach of more folk. DFSK (Dongfen Sokon Motor Company) is based in China, though it also has a large factory in the USA. Amazingly, Wellhouse Leisure will be squeezing-in lounge seating that converts to a double-bed, ample storage and a practical kitchen consisting of a two-ring gas hob,

fridge, plus a useful amount of worktop…all in a vehicle just 4.5m (14’ 9.25”) long and 1.68m (5’ 6.25”) wide. A British-made front-hinged elevating-roof provides standing height when on-site, but adds little to the height when closed…2.05m (6’ 8.75”). Quoted range of up to 166 miles is impressive. 5 years/75,000 miles base vehicle warranty, plus 8 years/100,000 miles on the traction battery, should give peace of mind.
Go for it
• The price
• Urban friendly size
• Long base vehicle warranties
• Full length elevating-roof

APRIL 2023
We had 32 vans come to Acle Academy for our Valentine's Rally. Friday evening having all been safely parked up we had the usual tea, coffee etc followed by bingo which as usual was profitable for some, and a quiz set by Tony which made us use our brains, or those that still have them! Saturday members went exploring or caught the bus to Yarmouth or Norwich for retail therapy. Others of course sought out the local watering holes for a pie and pint! Saturday evening we were entertained by Dale Diamond who we had been trying to get for some time. It was worth it and he kept us on the floor moving around all evening (which was just as well since there was no heating in the gym that we use owing to a boiler fault Friday afternoon). But we in Anglia are a hardy lot and survived assisted by liquid refreshment. Sunday morning tea, coffee, Dodgy Dip and raffle where of course Derek didn’t win anything! Thanks to the stewards and all who helped make this a good rally in the Anglia tradition.
Scribe Derek
With an ever increasing list of cancellations we arrived at Hoveton to set up only to find that the drains were blocked. Teresa got on the phone and within an hour we had DynoRod turn up and then we were sorted. Seventeen vans came to enjoy a special rally as it was Terry Laws-Randalls 68th birthday and Jackie had supplied the cheese and biscuits, grapes, crisps and cakes for all to eat, plus beers and wine, lasting two nights. Many thanks Jackie & Terry.
Friday night with Derek being too unwell to attend (so no Carol) Caz & Keith stepped in and took the rally fees, Caz on her own as Ben was home ill himself and Tony was alone too with Carol away for the weekend. Then we played cash bingo with some winning twice. Then Terry had a fun quiz he made up that afternoon followed by Tony's quiz.
Saturday was free to explore the town and bars trying to stay out of the showers during the day. Saturday evening Paul had sorted a music quiz which was great fun as poor Caz had fallen sick herself, so we all rallied around and helped to keep the rally running with helpers on the coffee and tea, and on the raffle.
Sunday morning Paul did the Dodgy Dip and the birthday boy drew the winning ticket only to the amazement of others he drew his own ticket. After that Keith did the raffle with one winning six times, his first time winning (not bad). Keith thanked all for making it an enjoyable rally, thanked all helpers, and Tony the only steward left. Thanks to Teresa for getting things sorted and helping with the rally. Scribe Keith

What a great start for the motorhoming new year. The new committee organised a day meet at Great Bourton Community Hall, near Banbury. The good thing about it was Barnstones Campsite is opposite so several members were able to camp for the weekend. Members were greeted with tea, coffee and biscuits and a catch up chat. New members were introduced and welcomed. Bacon rolls, crisps and cake rounded off the morning, well done committee. Hope to see members, and visitors, during the coming year of rallies.

28 vans attended the Valentine's Rally at Waddington. On Friday evening bingo was played and then Janis had prepared a Valentine's themed quiz. On Saturday the weather was cold but sunny. Some members went into Lincoln whilst the rest had a walked around the village visiting the local hostelry or coffee shop. In the evening Mr and Mrs was played (which caused a lot of laughter) and
was eventually won by Rob and Jayne. Romantic music was played and members joined in by dancing the night away.
Sunday morning members met together for a coffee morning and the drawing of the raffle. Brian, the chairman, thanked the members for attending and hoped they had all had a lovely weekend. He thanked the stewards Janice, Marion, Chris and Graham who had stepped in at the last minute to steward and done a sterling job. Yvonne

It felt so good out in the van and among friends after being cooped up since New Year. 17 vans arrived for the Valentine's rally in Ringwood, where the weather smiled on us with dry, sunny days. After Friday evening spent catching up, Saturday saw people wander into town for lunch, returning for afternoon tea and the ever popular card bingo, presided over by Larry. The hall was then transformed by red tablecloths, roses, hearts and other romantic paraphernalia in readiness for our Valentine's soiree. The evening began with a bowl of Sheila's lovely homemade soup followed by ice cream and shortbread hearts. Each lady was presented with a beautiful party favour, painstakingly handcrafted by Brenda, and containing a chocolate, whilst the men each had a chocolate. The activities kicked off with a keenly fought deck shuffle tournament, with a worthy winner (ahem!). It was then on to the dancing with romantic music played by Pete. Allen drew the raffle with prizes being shared around, which went down well.
Sixteen vans joined the next rally at Easebourne to a blast of winter weather. We appreciated the warmth of the school hall throughout the rally, though when the thermometer in the gents' cloakrooms actually reached 35°C we did wonder if all was running as it should. Indoor games were available for all to dip into but it was the small jigsaws that sparked most interest. Visitor Trevor generously treated everyone to cakes to celebrate his birthday and host Graham did his first raffle which ran perfectly, so no excuses in future, Graham. Thanks to all who helped make it an enjoyable, relaxing weekend.

Only a short write up this month due to cancellation of Westcliff Boys School as no hosts and not a lot of interest, our venue for 14-16 April at Museum of Power has also been cancelled due to building works on site.
We are still looking for hosts for the rest of the season's rallies even just to make coffee or run one evening entertainment ie bingo/quiz. Hopefully the weather will start warming up, at the time of writing it's still quite heavy frost. Bob
Upcoming rallies: 14-16 April CANCELLED 29 April-1 May at Pleshey Village Hall, CM3 1HJ, arrive 1pm (Barn Dance) with professional caller.
The Isle of Wight Group will kick off their 2023 rally programme at The Orchards Holiday Caravan and Camping Park on 14-16 April. This is a full facilities site and will be hosted by the committee. All members are welcome. We are all busy getting our motorhomes ready for the rally season but of course many members have been using their vans throughout the winter season. Other upcoming rallies are The Fighting Cocks on 5-8 May and South Thorness Farm 19-21 May. Please contact our Rally Officer Andrew Clapp for booking and details. Email cherylclapp@hotmail.co.uk.
17-19 February found 27 vans of the Kent group at the intriguing town of Sandwich. This was our first weekend rally of the 2023 season and was ably hosted by Tony and Marilynne who asked us to bring a soft broom over to the hall on Friday night. No, this was not a collective sweep of the school hall, rather it was a robust game of indoor “ice hockey.” Memories of school hockey matches came flooding back as we watched the men play a rather competitive vigorous game, some ankles were whacked with said brooms and some rather fierce tackling and defence of the goal was undertaken with Tony, the referee, stopping play a number of times. Sadly the brooms came out worse for
wear and many had to undergo on pitch repairs - they just don't make things like they used to! It was hard to judge whether the ladies match was any less vigorous but at least we stayed on our marks although not sure whether Caroline ever did find her mark!
Many of us went for a wander around the town and nature reserve on Saturday and ended up in the pub for dinner. Saturday night brought some sad news that unfortunately Elvis had phoned to say that due to illness he was unable to be with us – he had truly left the building! Luckily newish member Tony came up trumps by playing some Elvis tunes for us all to enjoy.
Upcoming rallies: 6-10 April St. Richards School, Bexhill, East Sussex. TN40 1SE (By kind permission of Sussex.) This is our Easter rally and plans are afoot for a full programme of activities with two nights of professional entertainment with MattrockingRobbins and Goldilux. There will also be a chance for you to express your creative side by bringing along an Easter bonnet for the parade on Sunday evening. This will be a weekend to remember but it is a bookable rally so please contact Jan on kent@motorcaravannersclub. co.uk to book. 18-21 May at Fir Tree Farm, Rhodes Minnis - hosts are needed for this weekend. Can you help? This will be a relaxing weekend with an opportunity to explore the local woods and pay a visit to the Lord Whiskey Tearooms. Alternatively you might wish to walk to the neighbouring village of Stelling Minnis with its windmill, church and pub. 25-30 May MCC National Rally and AGM - If you are attending, please contact Jan via the details above so that we can let you know what our theme will be for the Party night and whether you would be keen to have a gathering over the course of the weekend. 2-4 June at Solleys Farm, The Dairy, Church Lane, Ripple. Deal, CT14 8JL. Visit the family run ice cream parlour. Breakfasts, light lunches and snacks also available. Tractor rides (weather dependant) and farm trail. Surrounded by Kent countryside with plenty of footpaths which cross the farm.
Our first rally this month was at Whittingham & Goosnargh. The hosts were David and new hosts Beth and Stuart with help from Marie in organising the games. Good to see Gordon & Rita and Jeff & Carol back after heath problems. Many had meals in the club on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday rally fees were paid and tickets bought for games and Beth got the names of the entrants for Saturday's games. Lisa, our Chairwoman, welcomed 37 ‘vans: two Yorkshire, two NWM&NW and 33 Lancashire. She also welcomed new members Alan & Shirley and Peter & Pauline. We played three games of bingo followed by a quiz which was won by NWM&NW after a tie break. Dean played line dancing music and the floor was quite full. Lots of our new members are quite keen. The night ended with Working Man.
11am on Saturday and it was time to meet Janet & Stephen for Tai Chi exercises. A quick lunch then back in the room for those games. Us oldies helped as usual with rules
and scoring etc. so the afternoon went quickly and all games finished for tea-time. Winners of the games were:- PoolStephen (Lancs) & Martin (NWM) (pairs game); Curling - Audrey (Lancs) & Martin (NWM); Darts - Peter (Lancs) & Paula (NWM); Dominos - Mel Clements (Lancs) (singles).
All the winners were presented with trophies and cash prizes by Chairwoman Lisa and President Jack on Saturday evening. Sweets were given to the three juniors. This excitement was followed with a Feeling Game, won by a Lancashire team. Dean played music for the remainder of the night with old favourites and ending with Best of Friends.
Sunday and it's coffee morning, time for finding the winners of Bonus Ball and Raffle. Lisa gives lots of thanks to the hosts and helpers as well as Dean and Jack for the music. She also bids us all a safe journey home.
The Canberra Club was where the Valentine's Rally was held. There were 27 ‘vans including visitors - one East Mids and four NWM&NW. Again we had some new hosts, Stephen, Janet and Ann & David. Lisa opened welcoming all and covering domestics. The evening entertainment started with bingo and was followed with a brilliant picture quiz. The line dancers then took to the floor, dancing in their best Lancashire style to Dean and Jack's music.
Saturday daytime started with Tai Chi which is becoming very popular. There was also curling with David as well as Crafty Club with Val doing decoupage on a tin can! Evening brought a strange Valentine's quiz where Janet's head had to be explored to imagine what she was thinking for the answer! Followed by Allan and Jack presenting Play Your Cards Right won by lucky Barbara and Liz. There was also a Mr & Mrs contest won by Rob & Angie and Jon & Elaine.
Sunday coffee morning and Lisa thanked the hosts, all helpers and the music men! Scribe Alma
P.S. No divorces reported after Mr & Mrs competition!

IMPORTANT - NOTIFICATION OF A VENUE CHANGE: This year's AGM Meet will now be held at the Cogenhoe Bowls Club, on the weekend 13-15 October. AT THIS MEET, NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS WILL BE REQUIRED. The time to consider this is NOW. Do not leave things until the time of the AGM. By making a decision now, you can talk to/help Committee members, and get to know what the position entails, ensuring a seamless changeover at the AGM. Please remember that not enough Committee members means NO GROUP. The future of this Group is in the Members' hands. We still require stewards for three meets, unfortunately no stewards mean cancelled rallies. Here is happier news of the last rally: The February rally was at Cogenhoe Bowls Club, a good venue where we had full use of the clubhouse. John and Margaret welcomed 14 vans, including visitors from Chiltern, S&W Wales and Anglia. Every van was given the name of a 60s pop group, and everyone drew their interpretation for others to go round vans and guess the pop groups. Friday evening saw us gathering for a rather difficult Valentine's Quiz which resulted in some laughter and a few well meant groans. That was followed by a game of bingo. Saturday was a free day, with some going to the local cafe and others going to the Sports and Social Club. The clubhouse was open for members to sit and chat, and there were games on the table for anyone to use. It was a bit windy but the sun kept peeping through. On Saturday evening, we met in the clubhouse for pie, mash and vegetables, which went down very well. Congratulations to our chef, Denis, who, with a little help from his friends, saw that everyone was served quickly with a lovely hot meal. Afterwards we had a Sports Personality Quiz and a game of Last Man Standing. I would never have guessed that so many of us would have ridden camels, but I should have realised some would have eaten chocolate, as all the prizes were chocolates! Sunday brought the coffee morning when Tony thanked everyone and all were wished a safe journey home. All in all, I think a good weekend was enjoyed by everyone.
MargaretUpcoming rallies: 12-14 May Quorn Station, Woodhouse Road, Quorn, Nr Loughborough LE12 8AG. Cost £13.50 + Rally Fee. Hello everyone. Only one rally to report on in February which was held at Houghall Agricultural Campus in Durham, which as you can imagine by the name was a little smelly at times. This was well hosted by Wal and Em Meikle ably assisted by Steve and Christine Charlton, with Steve parking up the units. On arrival Wal and Em gave out an itinerary and quiz. We had 16 vans on site, all Northern Counties members. Friday evening we had a meet and greet in the conference hall. On Saturday most members went into Durham City for some retail therapy and of course the obligatory Wetherspoons for sustenance! Saturday evening saw us back in the conference room for a social evening, it was quite chilly however a good time was enjoyed, especially Wal giving out the 40 answers to his vehicle quiz – won by Steve and Christine Charlton. Well done both and an excellent quiz, thank you Wal.
Tall Ships 2023 – Northern Counties Group invite all MCC members to join them for the Tall Ships Rally at Crimdon House Farm from 5th to 10th July, hosted by Mark and Sue Lang. Note this is a bookable rally with a deposit to be paid on booking. To book go to the Group’s rally page at www. mccnortherncounties.co.uk. There will be two nights of live entertainment in the barn. The site has a sea view with access to the beach, there is also a bus stop right outside the venue to take you to Hartlepool for the Tall Ships events. We look forward to seeing you there.
Our upcoming rallies are: Easter 7-10 April at Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough (start is STRICTLY after 5pm) – at the time of writing hosts are required for this rally. Next is Ambleside Rugby Club 28 April-3 May which is the start of our Spring Lakes rallies. This is followed immediately by Braithwaite Memorial Hall 3-7 May and then Kendal 7-11 May, Kendal being the only bookable one due to space. We hope to see you at a rally soon. Paula & Tony Edwards
Portadown meet was hosted by the very capable Beverley and Robert Coulter and their co-hosts Helen and Richard Ellis, thank you. The weather suited the venue, dry and sunny. A few of our members went to Mullahead Ploughing Match, whilst a few others watched the Ireland Ruby match with a few beers/Guinness to celebrate Irelands' win. Shoppers hit the town and others enjoyed a walk around the park and lake which is close by.
Sunday coffee morning, we had wee buns, thank you. 29 vans attended this weekend among whom was new member William McKinstry. Congratulations to Joy and Robert Coalter on their new van, health to enjoy. Irene Hewitt won the quiz and Hugh Harvey won the number plate draw. And we can't forget our birthday girl Joyce McCune who has now joined the other club, the 70s club. Happy birthday Joyce, here's to many more. Check out pictures in gallery. Look forward to seeing you at our next rally which will be held in Larne. Eleanor and Victor
Footnote from Joe Little who attended: The Mullahead Ploughing Match, which had not been held since 2019,
due to adverse weather and COVID 19, was held in perfect conditions on Saturday. As there was no tractor pulling competition or trade stands this year it did not attract the same level of interest from our members as in previous years. Those members who did attend really enjoyed the spectacle, especially the teams of horses and the vintage tractors. (There are lots of photographs on the Mullahead Ploughing Match FB page).
Our first rally of 2023 was at Cranage Village Hall when our hosts were Mike and Linda and Pam and Bob. The weather was chilly but dry. There were 15 vans including a visitor from South and West Wales.
The usual bingo took place of Friday evening followed by one of Linda's easy? quizzes. It started well with a Valentine theme, but some of the later questions were a little taxing on the "little grey cells". This was won by Jon and Elaine's table. On Saturday some went out strolling in the local area. In the afternoon there were games with tea/coffee in the hall. In the evening soup was served followed by cakes. Many thanks to all who made or donated the cakes. As this was a Valentine's rally there was some romantic music and karaoke. Thank you to Elaine and Jon, who also distributed roses and sweetie bags. Thanks too to everyone who helped and supported the rally.
Our next rally was at Winsford Academy Shirley and Darren were our hosts. We had bingo on Friday evening followed by Shirley's quiz to see what we could remember from the 70s and 80s. Not a lot it seems! The school allowed us to use the warm library area for our social activities. Saturday morning some braved the cold weather and set off to the shops, market and the favourite watering hole. In the evening Shirley's brain teaser quiz was followed by Dingbats /Catchphrase quiz. More head scratching! Thank you Shirley for re-awakening our brains after the winter hibernation. It was an enjoyable time with members relaxing and chatting. In total 16 vans attended including a visitor from Severn Valley.

Hello and welcome to this early Spring newsletter. It's great to see the bulbs emerging along with camellias, daffodils and even some magnolia trees in blossom as I write this on 1st March. Our first rally of this year took place from 10-13 February, here is the write-up from hosts Julie and John Rowntree:- It was great to meet up with friends old and new at Trevarrian Holiday Park for our Valentine's rally. The weather was very kind to us and the sun shone at some point every day. 16 vans arrived over Thursday and Friday and they were quickly transformed into ‘love-ly' fabulously decorated heart clad vehicles. The winner of the
best decorated van was very difficult to judge due to the standard of decorating being so high! Willow and Millie Fern, the judges (members' children) could not decide on their favourite, so they used the tactic of Eenie, Meenie, Minee Mo... and the winner was Pam and Dan's van. Unfortunately they were not available to receive their prize due to having to leave early.
Friday night saw a great Battle of the Bowl – Mike won this race with a huge score of 145 – he was very pleased with his hearty prize. Friends walked, chatted and bused around the local area all enjoying the beautiful scenery.
We all enjoyed the fabulous tones of Arthur on Saturday night, dancing and tapping our way through the evening.
Sunday morning soon arrived and we once again gathered in the clubhouse for the ‘infamous' coffee morning catch-up. We had a Valentine's Quiz and the ‘Devon Dumplings' team eventually won victoriously with the correct answer to a four team tie break question (how many Valentine's day cards are given each year – see below for answer). We, the hosts, had a great weekend (as we think everyone did) all down to the friendliness and kindness of all the attendees and of course the site owners. A big thank you to you all. Lots of love. J&J
Answer to quiz question = 1 billion.
A big thank you to John and Julie, who also took several photos and these are posted on our Facebook Page.
Please remember to send the names of SWP members attending this year's Natonal AGM to Barbs Noble.
Hosting, which can be shared or split between hosts is required for Watergate Bay rally TR8 4AD, June 20-5 July,
Upcoming rallies: 6-10 April at Trevornick Holiday Park, Holywell Bay, TR8 5PW (revised rally dates), Easter rally. 10-15 May at Little Winnick Touring Park, PL26 6DL, fingers crossed for the Sausage Sizzle. 2-5 June at Bossiney, Tintagel, PL34 0AY. 22-26 June at Home Farm Camping, Marazion, TR17 0HQ. 30 June-5 July at Watergate Bay Touring Park, TR8 4AD.
Hello everyone, at last we are enjoying some warmer weather and I hope it will continue for our forthcoming rallies. 24-27 February at Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly: The first rally of the year hosted by Sue & Keith and Muriel & Dave who welcomed 20 vans including first timer Margaret Everson. There was a lot going on in the centre over the weekend with various clubs so we only had the use of the hall in the evenings, however we made the most of the hall in the time available.
On Friday night we kicked off with a catch up with old friends followed by few games of bingo and then background music until last orders at 11pm as the tables and chairs had to be put away for the kick boxing club early Saturday morning. A big thank you to you all for helping with putting everything away, it was much appreciated.
Saturday was bright and dry but very chilly and a few members took the bus into Carmarthen which is not too far on the bus. In the afternoon many of the members went
to the local rugby club to watch the match; in fact the club was packed. Not very happy with the result but perhaps we will gloss over that.
The evening which had a Welsh theme in honour of St David started with a Barra Brith competition judged by Graham Amphlet assisted by Valmai. This was won by Barry who I hear is a prolific cake maker “hint”. That was followed by “coffee morning” and a quiz about Wales and all things Welsh. The was won by the ‘Clever Dicks' who are Margaret and Gareth, Heulwn and Jeff, Mair and Roger and Sandra and John with a score of 15 out of twenty. There were two birthdays many happy returns to Mair and Charles and the lucky van was won by Jane and Ibrie.
The majority of the members left on Sunday but some stayed on and had a little get together on Sunday evening to round the weekend off. Last but by no means least a big thank you to Keith for always carrying the equipment and putting on the bingo and music. Thanks to Muriel Butt for this report.

Our first rally of the year was at Thomas a Becket school in Worthing. We had a good turnout, including several visitors from E Wessex, W Wessex, Chiltern and Essex. A warm welcome from our hosts, Alan and Mary Campbell, was given to all, especially the first timers and Steve Wynn (CoM).
The Friday evening get together included a quiz with a hilarious section based on Name That Tune, with musical renditions on kazoos. The players soon got the hang of how to play their instruments, even if the audience took their time in answering due to laughing so much.
Saturday's weather was dry so many took the opportunity to visit the town centre. The evening entertainment was provided by Alan, Mary and Pete Ridge, with a sing-a-long then Irish songs followed by 70s music, ably accompanied by Chris Pope on bass guitar. Well done, Chris, you were a welcome addition to the band.
The rally finished after the coffee meeting on Sunday morning. We were also joined by a couple of day visitors, including Rhona, a previous member of long standing. It's especially nice to see people who have played such an active part in our group's history, even if for just a flying visit.
The Easter rally (6-10 April) is at St Richard's College in Bexhill and due to be hosted by the Kent group.
The next Sussex rally (5-8 May) is at Easbourne School, Easebourne, GU29 9AG for a Coronation extravaganza.

Two future rallies Wildheart at Findon and Loxwood have been planned for June, details in the 2023 programme, website and next month's magazine. Looking forward to seeing you all at a rally soon. Jo
Riverside, 9-13 February 2023: This was our first rally of 2023 and was our Valentine's Rally. We had 50 vans attend our first rally of the season and they were 30 West Country, 9 Avon, 7 SWP, 2 West Wessex, 1 Chiltern and 1 Severn Valley.
On the first day we had our meet and greet where we got together with friends and making new friends and where Angie one of our hosts informed us what to look forward to for the weekend.
We started Friday evening where we had an evening consisting of bingo then a quiz and finished the night with background music. On Saturday we all took our decorated hearts to be judged and our winners were:- 1st Julia, 2nd Annette and 3rd Sam . Well done to our winners they were beautiful and well done to everyone who took part, they definitely brightened up the hall.
We then all had a game of bingo followed by our wonderful raffle. Then to finish a great evening with a disco. On our last evening we were entertained by the great Jason Toff once again he was absolutely great and a few of us even got up and danced. Some of us also enjoyed great evening meals by the chefs of Riverside and also enjoyed their fabulous carvery on Sunday. If you haven't had the pleasure in eating at Riverside then we would highly recommend that you do. We all had a great weekend.
On a sad note we would like to inform our members of the sad passing of Brian Yeo. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
We look forward to seeing you all at our next rallies which are: Hidden Valley Caravan Park, West Down, Ilfracombe on 18-23 April. Hidden Valley will now be £19 pupn and you will now need to purchase your electric from reception as you will then be given a prepayment card and refunded anything that is left on the card at the end of your stay.
The ‘Blues Festival’ Rally at Herston Farm in Swanage, from 2-6 March, was attended by 42 vans from nine groups. The weather was kind and the rain stayed away. On Thursday evening we had a quiz, raffle and an interesting game of Bingo!! Blues Bands played on site on Friday evening and on Saturday lunchtime and evening. There were also bands playing in many venues in town throughout the weekend. This was topped off by many with a delicious carvery lunch, on Sunday, in the club house. Some members walked the beautiful countryside and coastline and others took a taxi into town. The steam train was also running all weekend and could be flagged down at Herston Point for a ride.
Our Easter Meet has been cancelled due to problems with the venue and alternative venues approached. Hare Farm, 3-8 May, has also been cancelled as there are no hosts. Our next meet is a joint meet with East Wessex at The Beehive, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1UA, from 18-23 May. (West Wessex host – Maria on 07887 393137.) We still need hosts for rallies this year so please consider volunteering to host or assist a host. Please see the West Wessex website or our Facebook page for details of all future rallies.
Hello everyone, it's Paul again this month. Our first February rally was at Wetherby Racecourse where we welcomed 35 vans. The first night we had a quiz and bingo and on the second night it was Mr & Mrs with a good selection of volunteers taking part. The winners were Mark and Adrienne. There was also a guess the weight of the cake (baked by Carol Core) for the charity Ray of Sunshine and we raised £37. Sunday we had a coffee and cake morning before everyone went their separate ways.
Our second rally was at Hawes where 16 vans attended. Dingbats and a cheese-based puzzle kept the little grey cells active on Friday night. Saturday was a mixed day weather wise although some people did get out walking. As usual the cheese factory was popular. Another dingbat and quiz kept us going in the evening. Thanks to Carol and Malcolm and Gill and Steve for hosting/helping to host both rallies.
Upcoming rallies: 6-11 April Easter Rally at Eskdale school, Whitby and April 19-24 Bridlington Yacht Club, (bookable). May 12-14 Leyburn Auction Mart, May 25-30 National Rally. Hope to see you soon. Thanks, Paul (Chairman)
The seasons of high winds and driving rain, seen over recent months, are now behind us. So forget about icy roads and winter storms and forge ahead with plans to live outdoors as you prepare your motorcaravan accessories for a summer of fun in the sun.
Everyone, it seems, uses their motorcaravan in different ways and that is one of the greatest attributes of a motorhome or campervan. They lend themselves so perfectly toward the pursuits and desires of their owners.
For some, a campervan is a home away from home. Owners enjoy nothing more than arriving at their destination, setting up, settling down and enjoying a peaceful life. For them, the term accessories conjures up; awnings, tables chairs and sun loungers. With the season just around the corner, Isabella has a record number of new products in its range including new
Frances & Michael Howorth take a look at what motorcaravan accessories are needed to enjoy the upcoming season
• Best in class 5 year warranty.
• Sliding headrest makes a smaller pack size.
• Patented DuraLite frame makes it lighter and stronger than aluminium.
• Patented 3D mesh fabric allows water to pass through the padding so it drys quicker.
awnings, sunshades and even an underfloor heating system. From now on, cold feet in awnings are a thing of the past. Isabella’s new floor heating keeps your feet warm and complements the heater in your awning’s interior. The system consists of a heating cable mounted in aluminium panels that effectively distribute the heat where you want to have underfloor heating. Now that’s cosy! So too, is the new solar lamp (pictured above) from the same supplier. It can be used almost anywhere, as a table-lamp, romantic path lighting or attached to a spike in the ground. It is unique in the market.
For grandparents, accessories are objects that keep the kids happy and allow them to enjoy their own pastimes while spoiling their offspring’s offspring. Top of the list for us, are accessories like pup tents, tent boxes or the rather clever Cab Bunk system. It allows two children to sleep in an up-and-over bunk support system that fits all swivel cab seats. It is removable when not in use and very easy to install just before bedtime. Strong, telescopic, twin-wall aluminium poles are supported by simple hammock brackets or sliding door mounts. The beds themselves are made from strong, wipe clean, Cordura fabric used by the military,
and can support children up to 70 kg. The entire package only weighs 4.5kg per bunk. This no-screw, fullyadjustable system is completely removable when not in use and is easily stored along the main bed mattress until needed.
Accessories really come into their own when motorcaravanners venture off-grid. Firepits, compostable toilets and solar power chargers all spring to mind. While we
were intrigued by the compostable toilet conversion kit we found at the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show (see our show review on p60) we were really impressed with the Cinderella brand of incinerating toilets that disposes of ‘you-knowwhat’ in a flash and turns it all into ash. Imported into the UK from Norway and fitted by ECG in Scotland, the incineration toilet for campervans and motorhomes represents a whole new way of thinking about waste management. Sustainable, and environmentally friendly with no polluting emissions, this gas-powered machine makes it convenient and hygienic to get rid of toilet waste, even when in the middle of nowhere. Another cool gadget for off-griders seeking the ultimate accessory, is a folding solar panel from Falcon Technologies that can be used to charge up batteries. Compact, foldable design, portable and ready to use, their kit comes complete with everything needed for quick easy set-up and safe charging of 12-volt batteries of all types. The built-in charge regulator ensures the battery is always protected from overcharge and overdischarge.
Van living for some, offers freedom from the kitchen and a chance to eat out locally in pubs and in restaurants. Others enjoy getting out the BBQ and foraging for food. The Cadac Safari Chef 30 Compact is a popular motorcaravanning accessory. It operates off the Cadac
fits directly into the BBQ. Weighing in at less than 4kg, it makes an ideal outdoor cooking stove and can team up with multiple interchangeable cooking surfaces. It comes with a ceramic BBQ grid, ceramic flat plate, enamelled dome lid (which doubles as a pot for cooking) and a removable pot-stand for use with your own kettle and pans. Conveniently it packs away neatly in a durable storage bag when not in use.
Bicycles, good strong boots, carbon fibre walking sticks and outdoor clothing are among the accessories that outdoor enthusiasts put at the top of their want list. We are no exception, but we have learned you do not always have to pay top dollar for quality kit. In their larger stores, French sporting retailer; Declathon, have a very comprehensive range of outdoor accessories for those who enjoy hiking and walking as part of their motorcaravnning adventures.
Many motorcaravanners use their vehicles to become waterfront villas choosing to park beside
rivers, lakes, canals or the ocean. For them, the accessories most likely to appeal are kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUPs) or inflatable boats with motors. Enthusiasts who attended the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show at the NEC in February were lured into water sports by the very strong presence of boating exhibitors who are only just now beginning to catch on to what we motorcaravanners already knew; that the motorboat and motorhome markets share much in common.
Paddle board clothing, gear and accessories specialist Red equipment used the show to promote their beginners SUP. Their
people up to 110kg in weight. The 32" width and narrow nose profile allows the board to cut through the water, whilst still giving enough stability for a range of conditions. Remember however, if you do venture onto the water, do so safely. No matter what craft you sail in, it always pays to wear a life jacket. Red Equipment sell a unisex buoyancy aid designed especially for stand-up paddle boarders, this latest addition to their safety-range is the ideal choice for those wanting protection and in-water support, without compromising on comfort or manoeuvrability. Further afield
For motorcaravanners who set their sights in the south of France or southern Spain the accessory of choice might well be air conditioning. If that is the case, then Dometic has good news! They have just launched their next generation of RV rooftop air conditioners.
The all new Dometic FreshJet FXJ series gives motorcaravanners a cool choice of models with different watt ratings, comfort features and retrofit upgrading options. They can provide a matching AC solution for every demand and budget, and for every size of vehicle. These new-generation, roof-mounted air conditioners cool down the van in
record time with minimal energy consumption, and rather quietly too. As a result, motorhome and campervan owners can now rest and relax in complete comfort after an adventure-filled day. Everyone on board can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep and wake up to a new day full of energy.
Not everyone is heading south but we do know the sun is heading north and that is good news for those who enjoy using their motorhomes and adding to their usability with all the new goodies and gadgets available.

The little girl watched as her Grandfather packed the motorcaravan for his trip to Kent and innocently asked, “Grampa what did the grape say when he got run over by a campervan?” Sensing a joke, he smiled and benevolently replied, “I have no idea, what did the grape say?” “Nothing,” said the little girl, giving a pause before she continued, “But it did give a little whine!” And so it was, that we embarked upon this month’s Out and About adventure visiting Kent and discovering its many wineries, with a smile upon our faces.
Few motor caravan destinations in the UK can rival Kent for the quality of locally grown produce. Fruit-filled orchards thrive on its rich, well-drained soils. Picturesque hop gardens and vineyards grow on gentle slopes, and high welfare livestock supply locals with cheese and meat. Little wonder that this triangular-shaped county in south eastern England is known as the Garden of England.
The majestic cathedral city of Canterbury has gone out of its way to make itself attractive to those arriving in a motorcaravan. Special sections of carparking have been reserved for their exclusive use,
overnight camping is encouraged rather than frowned upon. In one car park there are even toilets, fresh water, chemical waste disposal facilities and bus rides into town included in the modest overnight fee.
Home to the Anglican Church of England, Canterbury Cathedral has a history dating back 1400 years. It features a Romanesque crypt and medieval stained-glass and is the crown jewel of any cultural trip to this part of England. Church visits can be dull at times, but a guided tour of this wonderful building, given by a licensed guide like Maggie Price, really does bring the cathedral to life.
Use a city guide to talk you through the city streets, you won't regret it. Our guide, David Pestell, is one of several, whose guided tours start at 11am and 2pm each day and last for 90 minutes.
Don’t just confine yourself to the streets when exploring Canterbury. Instead, take a boat trip along the River Stour for a relaxing and slightly different experience. Glide effortlessly through Franciscan Gardens past Greyfriars, a picturesque 13th century chapel, passing a Cromwellian iron forge and the Old Weaver's House, complete with ducking stool. This chair was historically used as a method of punishing 'scolds' –women accused by their husbands of talking back too much!
Before long, the cathedral looms into view, even more impressive when viewed from the river, and before you have the chance to catch your breath, the 14th century Dominican priory appears. Even when there are no historic sights to gaze upon, you can always admire the graceful swans, stooping willow trees and vibrant wildflowers. It is a rather restful and an altogether different way to tour the city.
Charles Dickens loved Canterbury and there is plenty of evidence still around that shows he was there and used the locations in his novels. The Sun Hotel and the delightfully quaint, Crooked House, now a bookshop, to name but two. Another writer who had a tale or two to tell, about this metropolis, was Geoffery Chaucer, who will be forever linked to the city and has a statue in the High Street that is the focus of many a tourist camera. Kit Marlowe, the playwright, is equally wellremembered hereabouts. He not only has a statue but also a very fine theatre named after him.
Why not plan to take in a show and spend the night parked in the New Dover Road Motorhome Park. Better still, treat yourself to dinner before or after the show; the Foundry is an excellent brewpub that serves delicious food with beer brewed on the premises. We really enjoyed our 5 Star ‘Behind
the Scenes’ brewery tour, given by the Foundry founder and owner Jon Mills, which he runs on demand.
Visit Canterbury, together with the Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID), are independent, business-led, not-for-profit initiatives. Their mission is to help make the city a vibrant, exciting, well connected, and successful business community, that is an attractive, clean, green, safe, enjoyable shopping destination for everyone. They seem to be doing a good job! There are so many pleasing specialist shops, that you could spend a whole day here just window shopping. Here are just a few that caught our attention.
When Jonathan Piggins created Corkk, he wanted his wine shop to be different. He has succeeded by offering a remarkable range of wines from (predominantly) Kent, and
around England, with a few select bottles from the rest of the world. He invites customers to sit, relax and sample wines drawn from special Enomatic dispensers, enjoying a platter of local food or a bowl of nuts and olives, as they consider what to buy. All wines have been personally selected by Clive Barlow, one of only 400 Master of Wines in the world who, every month, introduces new wines from around the country, focusing on character and taste.
husband and wife team, are the creative force behind Canterbury Pottery, a quirky shop in the shadow of the great cathedral. You will usually find them both hand making all sorts of weird and wonderful pots in their studio at the back of the shop.
Situated along the cobbled streets, just a stone’s throw away from the pottery, Fitzgerald Jewellery is a sleek store selling designer and
locally-crafted jewellery. Working inside a shop with its intriguing interior design and a laid-back approach, goldsmith Sarah Wright and diamond-mounter Luke Blackie, work in front of the customer, using traditional methods of jewellery making. Having been designed in-house and hand-made on site, shopping here is an experience unlike any other jewellers in Kent.
Nestling quietly inside the city walls, inside an old half-timbered building, The Moat Tea Rooms offer black, green and oolong blends, a selection of homemade sandwiches and cakes, plus home-baked goodies including Gypsy Tart. Kentish legend says that Gypsy Tart, a sweet, caramel-flavoured dessert, using just three ingredients, was first made by a farmer’s wife, who saw some hungry gypsy children playing outside her home. >>
Tracing the spectacular Kent Coast provides a road trip with some of the most dramatic scenery in England. You can also discover the South Downs, with its spectacular views and multiple walks, trails and experiences to become immersed in and lose yourself under the dark, starry skies.
There’s a linear route that stretches around 130 miles that can take around 4 or 5 days, with a few stops here and there, or longer if you allow a little extra time to discover the gems that you will encounter hidden along the route. Starting, or finishing at Dover the route stretches to Chichester, along a voyage into the past, including Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Norman history, the Napoleonic Wars and WWII, peppered with traditional Victorian seaside resorts, piers and beaches galore.
There is no end to the destinations and places of interest that can be ticked off along the way, such as Dover, Rye, Hastings, Brighton and Chichester, plus the South Downs themselves, of course, to name but a few. However, it’s the nature of road trips that weave together such destinations and those in-between, and marries them with hidden gems and experiences, allowing for the road less explored, to be explored.
It's in these stretches of your “road trips” journey, you are sure to encounter a little something a day-tripper might not get to see. Leave some time to stop and take in the many monuments and find out the stories behind them. Take the Meridian Monument on The Promenade, Peacehaven, for example, where east meets west, with its dual purpose, as the King
George V Memorial.
Discovering different vistas when stopping along this route, allows for a whole different perspective. Take a wine or food tour, or ride on a steam train or vintage bus. If you’re into wild swimming, take a refreshing dip at Cuckmere River in Cuckmere Meanders or the River Ouse at Barcombe Mills.
Strategically placed, by their nature, bird hides give the perfect vantage point for seeing the place as a native, albeit the flying variety, as well being immersed in nature, peace and quiet; giving a feeling of somewhat taking the slow-road.
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has five accessible birdwatching hides, plus a wonderful picnic spot, without the worry of finding a place to park that might not take your vehicle size.
Film fanatics can visit backdrops ‘seen-on-the-screen’, such as James Bond: The Living Daylights at Beachy Head – the backdrop for the opening scene in which James Bond parachutes out of a Land Rover towards the sea. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Seven Sisters’ cliffs provides the backdrop for shots where Harry Potter walks up the hill to find boots that transport him to the Quidditch World Cup. Folkestone features in Battle of Britain (1969) and Dungeness and Hastings, in Foyle’s War (20022015), to name but a few.

The Goods Shed, down by the railway station, is both a Farmers' Market and Food Hall. It has been showcasing local produce and fine foods from an array of independent suppliers since 2002. Inside this former railway warehouse, you will find a vegetable stall, a bakery, a butchery and the city’s only independent fishmonger. Cheesemakers of Canterbury have a wide selection of local cheeses, including the smoky Ashmore, a hard cheese from British Friesian cow’s milk and Dargate Dumpy, which is a sheep’s milk cheese in the style of Camembert. If you like hard goat’s cheese, try Kelly’s Goat, that is both creamy and peppery. The food stalls are bursting with artisanal breads and cakes baked on-site, fresh pasta, charcuterie and speciality ingredients. Press Wine Services sell fine wines from independent importers and offer the largest number of British bottled beers in the southeast of England. Hampers full and larders overflowing, we set off from the city to do a little wine tasting. Our first stop was Simpsons in Barham. As a husband and wife team, Charles and Ruth Simpson, began producing wines in the south of France. In 2012, attracted by the quality of the terroir, they brought their expertise and savoir-faire back to Kent, establishing their own winery, with an aspiration to produce world-class English wines. The tasting room
they have created is the perfect spot to sample their wine-making skills. We always thought that red grapes made red wine and green ones made white, but Charles and Ruth make a white wine using red Pinot Meunier grapes. It looked rather pink to us, to the point that we would call it a rosé, but it is in fact vinified as a white wine. The wine they call Derringstone, takes up colour from the skin of the red grapes at pressing. There is no intentional soaking of the skins, as is the case for rosé or red wine. The result is a fruity, wellrounded wine that delights, confuses, and intrigues all at same time.
Not far from Simpsons, set in the middle of the countryside on the outskirts of Bishopsbourne, is a complex that is well worth stopping at. Court Lodge Farm is a collection of farm buildings that house a variety of different entrepreneurial enterprises. The draw for us was an artisanal bakery called Gilda, which John Warren set up a year or so ago. Elsewhere in the complex is Worgan's Farm shop, an excellent Butcher / Fishmonger combo, that sells both vegetables and some tasty looking ready meals, which would be perfect for the campervan oven. Prefer not to cook your own? Then we have good news for you; next door to Gilda, is the Tadpole Tearoom and while you are there, enjoying a meal, you can drop off your four-footed van-companion at Wash, Wag & Go, a dog grooming parlour next door.
Balfour Winery, located in Staplehurst, on the Hush Heath Estate is fast becoming a household name in terms of English wine. Leslie and Richard Balfour purchased 400-acres of dilapidated farmland in 2002, with a view to making a pink, sparkling wine, thinking; “If we can’t sell it, we’ll drink it”. Fortunately, when Balfour Brut Rosé was launched two years later, it quickly became a gold medal winning success. Balfour Brut Rosé was the first English Sparkling wine to be served by British Airways in their First Class cabin worldwide and was also chosen as the only English
wine to be served at the London 2012 Olympics. Time your arrival for a tasting tour of the estate to coincide with lunch. Then you can taste your wines together with an excellent, locally sourced, cheese and charcuterie platter that is the perfect accompaniment to the wines.
Kent’s original vineyard, Biddenden, has been owned and operated by the Barnes family since 1969. Now, run by the second and third generation, the single estate vineyard spans 23 acres of gentle south facing slopes, situated in a sheltered valley. It grows 12 different grape varieties to produce White, Rosé, Red and Sparkling English wines. From their first wine, bottled in 1973, production has now grown to around 80,000 bottles per year. Park in a large, easy-to-access car park and take a self-guided tour between May and September or pre-book a private guided tour, to meet the wine-maker and gain a real insight into English wine-making. The fully stocked, onsite shop sells
the vineyard's wines, ciders and fruit juices, alongside a specially selected range of local and regional products.
Balfour, Biddenden and Simpsons are just three of eight collaborating vineyards that have banded together to create; Wine Garden of England, an organisation that promotes a wine trail and visitor experience in Kent. Each estate is uniquely different and seven of them encourage visitors in motorcaravans to drive down and discover the diversity that makes the best cellars of Kent so special.

It all started with straw. For years, Bedfordshire residents had plaited locally grown straw to make baskets, screens and window blinds. Subsequently, after the advent of the railways had been instrumental in the rapid development of summer seaside resorts, there had been a commensurate surge in demand for sun hats, also called ‘boaters’. Unsurprisingly, when one considers the local expertise at turning straw into fabric, Luton quickly became the main hub of straw millinery production. Boaters were folded
(actually rolled) and packed in long cardboard tubes. More upmarket ‘formal’ millinery for both men and women were packed individually in silk-lined boxes. The tubes and boxes were then loaded into large vans for distribution nationally and also for export.
Two important considerations in transporting goods follow. First, where to place them on board to preserve a low centre-of-gravity, for stability. Usually, very heavy items are placed (and secured) at floor level within the wheelbase, and heavy items at floor level
immediately behind the rear axle. On top of these are stowed mediumweight items, and finally lightweight items fill the remaining void, up to the roof. Second, the more goods one can put in a given load space, the cheaper the transportation costs per-unit become. Lutonbased hatmakers only wanted to transport lightweight items, but (as is usually the case) wanted to get more aboard each load, thus they came up with the idea of asking the commercial vehicle coachbuilders to extend the load space over the cab. As a result, the Luton

overcab was born [1]. The first UK-based manufacturer to mass-produce Luton overcab motorcaravans was Poole based CI Motorised, a division of Caravans International, which shortly afterwards became Autohomes. It was in 1972 when the Danish automotive designer Carl Olsen developed a one-piece moulded GRP roof which included a Luton overcab. CI Motorised/Autohomes built one size of body that fitted on the
Bedford CF, the Ford Transit [2] and on the forward-control Commer [3]. It was a licence to print money. Our Stateside friends were there at least ten years previously with motorcaravans such as this mid 1960’s Ford-based example [4], photographed in the RV Hall of Fame, Elkhart, Indiana. One of the best-selling American overcab RV’s of the era was the early 1970’s Dodge Blazon [5]. Luton overcabs were sometimes retro-fitted, such as this spectacularly ill-judged DIY addition to an American Ford Utility panel van [6]. A better-integrated Luton on a panel van was designed and built in the
UK by Basildon-based Canterbury (previously Canterbury-Pitt). It crowned the Ford Transit among others. This 1979 example [7] was photographed a couple of years ago, still in use as a daily driver.
Next, there are Luton Overcab motorhomes and LUTON OVERCAB motorhomes [8 & 9]. The huge GMC underpinned one [8] was (apparently) divinely-inspired. It was owned and used by American Evangelist – Billy Leggette – who claimed that God gave him the design and exact dimensions in response to a prayer. Next is a ‘housetruck’ photographed in New Zealand, where there are a surprising number of these lofty continued on p56

examples around. Some smaller DIY overcab motorhomes based on the old Fordson/Ford Thames van that first saw the light of day just prior to World War Two – still survive in NZ! (10hp side-valve engine… perfect for those not in a hurry.)
As designers have increasingly utilised CAD programmes and tested mock-ups in wind tunnels, Lutons have become more streamlined with rounded corners. Some also have a less upright front panel. It is generally agreed that making the front of the Luton slope rearwards at the same angle as the windscreen, is a good starting point. This is known as the ‘approach angle’ or ‘strike angle’. The other significant change concerns the base vehicle cab roof. At first, all Luton overcab coachbuilt motorhomes retained the original cab roof on which they sat. On later motorcaravans the roof was cut-away, opening out the cab, which combined with the popularity of swivelling cab seats, made it a
more pleasant place to sit and relax. A closer look at the Ford [4] will reveal that not only has the roof been cut-away, the original cab doors and windscreen have also been jettisoned!
Over the last ten years coachbuilt motorcaravans with Luton overcabs have been superseded by those featuring low-profile ones, though recently that too is slowly changing with the former regaining popularity, especially in Europe.
A recent development from Bürstner on their 2021 Lyseo Gallery [10] has an unusual method of raising the Luton roof. An electric compressor is used to inflate columns in the fabric sidewalls. ‘Saloon Bar sages’ have been overheard questioning whether it is a classic case of overachieving…

February at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre saw the 2023 edition of the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show take place over six actionpacked days. Billed as the UK’s largest start of year showcase of motorhomes, campervans, caravans, tents, trailer tents, caravan holiday homes and luxury lodges all under one roof, it is the baby sister to the October Motorhome & Caravan Show.
Traditionally very few new motorcaravan models make their debut here and this year that number was lower than normal. Scarcity of stock and a slow supply chain made sure that sales staff, who are normally over attentive when visitors show any interest in a van, looked rather glum. Elsewhere, especially on stands selling accessories and services,
the anticipatory atmosphere matched the buoyant mood of show attendees who had flocked to Birmingham for their springtime injection of motorcaravan fun and enthusiasm.
New vans Companies that did bring new models to the show included Coachman, who introduced not one but two new models of motorhome.
Their new, 4 berth, Travel Masters 545 and 565 both sit on a MercedesBenz base and AL-KO chassis, combined to provide a comfortable driving experience and a well thought through interior. The range has a choice of two popular layouts that offer practical and flexible living solutions, including an island bed within the 545 and twin beds in the 565. Sterling Automotive Design displayed their all-new Roamer with its wonderfully modified front-end that gave the Renault Master a completely different and rather fetching look that was, said managing Director Carl Williamson, “The product of many days’ output on the company’s 3D printer.”
The Campervan Company brought their new all electric 2 in 1 campervan to the show. Based on a zero emission Toyota Proace van, this 7-seater MPV converts into

clever 4 berth campervan in just minutes. In the same eco-friendly vein, Eco Wagen, a van converter based in Cornwall, displayed their new Slim Van. Based on a VW T6 body, the new model has a larger bed than previously seen and the company’s eco ethos is backed by its use of sheep’s wool insulation and sustainable wood interiors.
At the upper end of the scale, it was the Morelo Empire Liner 1, with its price tag of half a million pounds, that was the most expensive and largest of the new models on display. As the show opened, it was announced that this was the motorhome that had won first
With a name like Morelo, the brand sounds more Italian than German, but Germany is where it comes
vehicle is fully customisable allowing customers to change most things except the side on which the steering wheel is mounted. Those with an HGV licence and half a mil burning a hole in their pocket will, however, still need some patience. There is a two year wait before production can start on one ordered today.
Whilst not quite as new, but interesting nevertheless, two other vans caught our attention. The first was the Auto Trail 68 Expedition motorhome, an entry level Fiat based model that comes with 4 interior layout options offering up to 6 berths. What caught our eye was the clever use of heavy-duty sliding trays fitted to the garage under the main bed. These pull-in, pull-out trays allowed the carriage of electric mountain bikes or motor scooters and yet still allowed users to access storage lockers in the same space. The second attention-grabbing attraction was on the Baileys of Bristol stand. There they had chosen to display their Ford-based, Adamo 75-4T motorhome. This is the vehicle they plan to use in their forthcoming Sahara Challenge which will see them set off on a 21-day crossing of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to the very northern edge of the Sahara, the largest hot desert in the world. Now there is an adventure we would love to be a part of.
You want to be able to take everything you need with you when you go away in your ‘van. However, will this overload the rear suspension? Using MAD suspension helper spring kits or semi air conversions from Ekollon will help your ‘van drive more level so it will
Many visitors to the show are already proud and happy owners of a motorcaravan. With no desire to change or upgrade, they are still nevertheless keen to visit the show to catch up on what’s new when it comes to supplies, products and suppliers. We undoubtedly fall into that category and enjoyed our tour of the stands that for the most part cling to the side edges of each of the 5 halls in use. It was there that we found Protec Covers; not new but still inventive and ever improving. Based in West Yorkshire, this family-run business has 40 years of experience in the textiles and sewing industry, with more than 20 years of developing tailored campervan and motorhome covers. The fabric they use is made exclusively for them in Scotland and is both UV protected but also breathable, meaning your van stays safe under the cover however long you leave it there.
What was new and exciting, if toilets ever are, was a new compostable toilet from Arwinger. This small German start-up has come up with a clever kit that converts a conventional Thetford cassette toilet into a dual waste separation toilet that uses no chemicals, no water and allows solid waste to be disposed of in a dog waste bin or compost heap. Liquid waste gets separated
at point of use and is collected into a small, separate container and can be disposed of using a domestic waste disposal system. Clever? Yes. Easy to fit? Presumably so! The downside is, from our point of view, the heavy cost of toilet conversion. But, if that is the price you must pay for the freedom to wild camp over prolonged periods, then perhaps it is worth it!
The Higginson family are an inventive lot! Led by father, Mark and aided by sons Mathew and Martin they not only invented the Disklok Steering Wheel visual anti-theft deterrent but have also come up with a small wheel, electric bike. The MiRider is a versatile bicycle built in the UK that not only folds away neatly but was designed specifically to be carried in a motorhome. Perhaps the only one to have been designed especially for our industry. It is that foldability that has made the MiRider such a hit because for years now, carrying bikes on the back of a campervan with rear barn doors has been somewhat frustrating. Once the bikes are placed on a tow bar mounted bike rack, those rear doors cannot be opened without first removing the bikes. What was needed was a simple easy to use swing away bike carrier and several engineers have over the years
made them up in ones or twos and sold them by word of mouth. They were for the most part, cumbersome, heavy, expensive and downright ugly. Despite our looking, we have never before found one exhibited at a show. At this show there were four on display and we now know a fifth will be launched at the show in October.
Part of the AL-KO group, Sawiko had on display their Trigo bicycle carrier designed to fit onto Fiat, Peugeot or Citroen panel vans. This swing away system can carry up to three e-bikes and has a load rating of 80 kilos. Their Futuro, E-Lift carrier was even smarter, in that its bike deck drops down to road level for easy bike loading and then rises automatically using a remote control. The third swing away was the Agito, that can carry cargo up to 120 kilos meaning you can carry a motor scooter or motor bike on the back. Witter, part of the Westfalia Automotive group, also chose the show to launch their Receiver Hitch, a modular system to which can be fitted a wide range of attachments including what they call a swing out tow bar onto which you can affix a standard bike carrier.
Satellite TV specialists Oyster used the show to introduce a new entry level system they call the

Pioneer, the electronics company, launched the latest model in their Avic-Z range of camper navigations systems. This one is designed to perfectly match the look and feel of the Ducato / Boxer range of cabs. It supports the latest in connectivity options for smartphones including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and even WiFi connectivity.
Dometic, the multi-faceted supply giant, launched a slew of new merchandise on day one. As the show began, journalists were showered with press releases detailing each new product. Included in the long list was a new FreshJet FJX air-conditioner aimed specifically at RVs and a new mobile power system. Tentbox did the same, announcing a range of new roof top boxes, some of which add an extra story on top of larger motorcaravans. Our ‘Cute Product of the Show’ prize has to be awarded to Wonderfold for their VW4 Volkswagen Stroller. This imaginary prize is well deserved given that this rather groovy stroller was inspired by the vintage split screen VW and comes complete with bumper and
even working headlights. It can carry up to four kids weighing a total of 1,360 kilos and folds away, to stow neatly standing up when not in use. Not cheap, but very appealing indeed!
If the Compostable toilet collected our ‘Most Innovative’ award and the VW stroller, our ‘Cute’ award, then the ‘HardWorking’ award has to go to the four silver-haired surfers who cheerfully manned our very own club stand in Hall 3. Unfailing with their smiles and warm welcomes, this group of volunteers worked unstintingly in their drive to recruit new members. And very successful they were too. Well done team!
Don Amott is a new and used motorcaravan dealership based in the Midlands. Who better to ask about the state of the industry? Talking to us on their stand in Hall 3, Ben Amott explained how the shortage of new stock is affecting business. He told us that used motorcaravans are selling both quickly and for good prices. He added, “It is very easily possible that a campervan or motorhome in good condition will sell for more money now, than it cost new, two years ago!” He told us that to get good stock, the company has to pay ‘top dollar’ for used vans and the business has become so competitive that Ben has had to change his work pattern. He explained, “Now instead of working Monday to Friday, I work Sunday to Thursday. I use the Sunday to phone would-be sellers while they are still at home and before my competitors open their offices on Monday. That way I am ahead of the game and get the best stock.”
The Caravan Camping & Motorhome Show in February may not be as large nor as broad in content as the show in October, but somehow its more compact nature and hall layout makes it a good show to attend. We are glad we did.
