Are you driving illegally?
When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!
When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up-to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these figures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg). This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.
Need to uprate to carry more payload?
If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models. Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.
Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?
SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg. For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free-to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload. Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.
For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

Committee welcomes Jacci as new Chair
A
t our November meeting, Kate Jones stepped down as Chairman and Jacci Durkee was duly elected as our new Chairman. On behalf of all of us, Jacci thanked Kate for her work as Chairman over the past three years. As this created a vacancy for Vice Chair, another ballot was held and Sue Pilkiw was elected. Mr Ali Bartlam and Mr James Forrester have been co-opted on to CoM. We have been following up on questions raised during our Members’ Meeting at the AGM and the findings were discussed. 1. Are dogs allowed in tents, halls and marquees? Further information has been prepared by Keith Poole, Health & Safety Officer (update to follow in January's magazine). 2. Are CoM trying to improve access to LPG? There is a link to a list of LPG suppliers on the Club website. Various Marquis dealers are installing LPG – check with local branches. 3. National Rally: Changes are being made – and not just the name.

OBITUARY
The Club welcomed Jacci (left) & Sue as new Club Chair and Vice-Chair.
More details will be published in future magazines. Members in Ireland have been searching for a suitable venue, without any success as yet. If you know of anyone who would like to have a stall at the Festival, please contact Anne Taylor. 4. Some Groups reported that they hadn’t been getting the emails from Head Office. Rather than relying on an automatic response, please reply just to the Office to inform us that it has been received. Groups have been asking whether they should carry Group fire extinguishers and the use of drones taking photos at rallies, so we will be providing further guidance on both these topics in future issues.

REVIEW | MOTORHOME & CARAVAN SHOW
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Frances and Michael Howorth walked the halls of the NEC in Birmingham to find out all that was new and exciting.
S
torm Babet tried hard to dampen spirits and put people off visiting the Motorhome & Caravan Show in October. But it failed! Instead, the show saw record breaking visitor attendance and that resulted in strong sales for exhibitors. In fact, visitor numbers hit the highest ever recorded for an October edition of

the Motorhome & Caravan Show. Clear indication that interest in onthe-road holidays in motorcaravans is not slowing down. Last year there were 101,606 visitors at the show. This year 106,131 – up by 4,525 – flocked to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham for the six-day show. With over 400 exhibitors in attendance, the show offered the UK’s largest display of leisure vehicles inside a space just shy of 20 acres. Many manufacturers used the show as a platform to launch completely new model ranges, as well as showcasing innovative concept vehicles showing how motorcaravan adventures could look like in the future.

The show’s signature Inspiration theatre proved popular with visitors. It featured talks and Q&As with personalities who shared their stories and tales of touring. With manufacturers, dealers and experts all in the same arena, many praised the success of the show, both in terms of record sales and visitor numbers, and several dealers are

already gearing-up for their return to the NEC in 2024. Exhibitors launching new model ranges and innovative concept vehicles included Bailey of Bristol, Coachman, Swift, Erwin Hymer Group UK, Hillside, Chausson, Carthago and Malibu. Swift used the occasion to shine a light into the future. Featuring a concept vehicle, they call Basecamp EVO, it showed the direction Swift will be taking when designing new motorcaravans. The concept featured exterior mouldings made with 85% recycled plastics, a manufacturing process that generates 75% less CO2. Innovations included a rainwater harvesting system that will save 0.5 litres of
drinking water per toilet flush and a 920W solar panel system nine times more powerful than current panels! Swift predict that future motorhomes will be insulated using recycled plastic bottles. Roughly 1,750 in every van! Soft furnishings will get similar treatment with every kilogram of cushion filling containing approximately 42 recycled plastic bottles and interior fabrics also made from recycled material. Mirrors will be made from bamboo and recycled Perspex. Swift say motorcaravans of the future will be fully electric including heating, hot water, fridge, induction hob and microwave with grill and oven – reducing CO2 emissions by 92% when compared to gas-
powered appliances. All powered by renewable electricity. Swift were not the only company to have concept vehicles on their stand. Baileys of Bristol launched their first ever campervan. Based on a Ford chassis, the brand-new Endeavour was getting a lot of admiring glances from visitors, as was the all-electric EV concept vehicle Baileys introduced. At a Caravan Writers Guild dinner held during the show, Simon Howard, Marketing Director at Bailey of Bristol, told us: “We used the show to launch the Bailey Endeavour, our very first campervan. It received positive reactions and strong sales. We’ve been gauging customer feedback on the EV Concept Van on the future of leisure vehicle design to see how we can incorporate it into other ranges.” Mick Cantrell the General Sales Manager at Brownhills Motorhomes Ltd told us, “The show went well, we all enjoyed the week, doing it with a smile on our faces (which always helps), we finished the show at 93% of the result from our prior year, which we were very happy with.” Karl Krisiullevicius is the Sales Manager at Fiamma; the Italian >>

accessories company. Speaking to him after the show he said: “After a couple of years of having the post Covid sales boom, I was not too sure what to expect for this October show. In the wider industry things appear to have calmed down and sales have returned to “normal”. All these things said we had a very good show and came away with extremely strong
sales. Sales of our key products were as strong as ever, these were on our core products which include awnings, carry bikes and our privacy rooms. This show has always been a good barometer as to how things are going in general. Based on what we saw, things aren’t too bad at all. My full focus is now on preparing for the February show, it literally is just

Celebrating 10 years in business this year RooDog was a hit with many visitors during the week with their range of eye-catching designs including a polka dot option. Scot Voase, head of sales told us, “Favourites with visitors were our two folding bike options – Cosmo and Bliss and the Chics for their comfy gel saddles and relaxed ride positions. The Rogue was a draw for many too with its industrial motorbike styling.” It was because we own electric bicycles that were interested in what Thule had to offer. The show gave us, and everyone else in the UK, the very first opportunity to see what they will be selling in the middle of next year. Hill View Awnings, a Thule agent based in Dorset, was demonstrating the long anticipated VeloSwing for campervans. As any campervan owner knows, carrying bikes on a van fitted with barn doors is fraught with problems. Even the best of the tow bar mounted bike carriers interferes with the opening of doors to the rear of the van. The VeloSwing seems to be the e-bike carrying solution for vans that we, and many others, have been >>

waiting for. Once installed it will be possible to load your e-bikes and head out on a road trip, knowing that when you need to stop you can access cargo in the back of the van without the need to first unload the bikes. Brent Horder, a Director at Hill View Awnings, said, “When it becomes available, this innovative towbar solution for carrying bikes can be used on vans that include the Fiat Ducato, Citroën Jumper, Peugeot Boxer or the new Opel Movano van. It easily swings to the side to give you full access to the rear of your vehicle, even with e-bikes mounted.” Andrew Ibbotson of LocknLevel was keen to show those who visited his stand, the prototype air levelling system his firm has invented for use with motorhomes and campervans. It is a variant using the same principle he has employed to level out caravans and he has been doing that for the last 10 years. By the time the February show opens, Andrew hopes to have his new motorcaravan

version ready for sale. Ben Parkin, Sales Director at Coachman descibed how: “The level of interest from the audience was great and our products were well received. We experienced a lot of interest for future investments after the show finished, which is exactly why we come year after year.” Erwin Hymer Group UK had a new stand designed to showcase their new Xplore the Xplore CV X8 campervan. Rachel Moncrieff, the groups Marketing Manager said, "The Motorhome & Caravan Show is a pivotal part of our launch and branding strategy.” Adrian John Cross, Managing Director at Hillside Leisure explained: “We have had a record breaking number of sales at the show, with a 5% increase on our previous best show. In addition to the show we have also had an exceptionally high
number of enquiries and pre-booked appointments and test drives for our open weekend.” Nick Barker, Sales Director at Travelworld revealed: “This year has exceeded our expectations. It’s been fantastic and we’re set for our best show to date. We’ve seen a wide mix of customers with great interest each day. The four-wheel drive motorcaravans continue to sell well and we have had great reception to the premium models.” Paula Marden of Motorhome Essentials told us: “We had a great show as a company and as always, the show delivered the right number and quality of visitors and our cab carpets were flying off our shelves.” For those who may have missed out on the October show, the good news is that tickets for the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show in February 2024 are now on sale.

DECEMBER 2023
ANGLIA Twenty vans came to Hoveton Village Hall. Unfortunately, due to restricted hall use through double booking by the hall management, things had to be altered. However we made the most of things in Anglia’s normal style. Thursday evening after an 8.30pm start there was tea, coffee and bingo which as usual was profitable for some. On Friday many went into Norwich on the bus for retail therapy. Friday evening 9pm start we had a quiz all about sweets and chocolates which taxed many member's brains. The urns were on again. The car park looked like a lake in places due to a torrential downpour at 3pm. Saturday again some went into Hoveton whilst others went further afield and some hardy souls hired boats on the river, Saturday evening we had karaoke from Dave Hills which was a change and made the evening different. Sunday morning tea, coffee, bonus ball and raffle. A good weekend. Thanks to the stewards Mal, Jan, Caz and Ben, who also kindly supplied cheese and biscuits one evening. Forty-seven vans came to our AGM Halloween party. Friday evening there was tea, coffee etc this was then followed by cheese and wine for all members present. Thanks to Carol and Derek for their cheese cutting skill! Bingo followed and as usual was profitable for some. Saturday morning we had our A.G.M. results as follows: Chair - Keith Poole; Vicechair - Carol Allen; Secretary - Sandra Glendenning; Treasurer - Keith Boreham; Rally Officer Teresa Poole. Some new faces on committee: Paul Girling; Paul and Julie Bentall; Annette Boreham. Old hands are Carol Biggs; Mal and Janet Heaps; Ben Allen. Saturday afternoon members decorated the hall and tables and what a magnificent display there was. Ghoulies, ghosties and long leggity beasties wasn’t the word for it. We were then entertained by Adam Whitmee who we had not had before. He played a great mix of music to suit all tastes
and we were reluctant to let him go at the end. During one of the intervals our Chairman Keith presented Derek, our outgoing secretary, with a nice bottle as thanks for 20 years service to Anglia Group on Committee (to the day). Sunday morning a hive of activity in the hall getting the decs down with deflated spooks, ghouls etc lying on the floor. After tea, coffee and the Dodgy Dip the large raffle was drawn with many sitting on the “chair of shame”! Even Derek won a prize! A very good weekend with thanks to the old Committee who stewarded and anyone else who helped in any way. On a serious note we have had quite a few members book for rallies this year and not turn up without letting us know. Please let us know if you are unable to attend so your place can be offered to someone else (if there is a waiting list). This is the last scribe report I shall do after many years. I hand over to the new scribe, Sandra. Scribe Derek Upcoming rallies: 8-10 December is our Xmas party at Sheringham High School NR26 8ND. Start 5pm. Fully booked but contact teresa.poole50@virginmedia.com to see if any cancellations. 30 December-2 January is our New Year Party at Terrington St. Clements Village Hall PE34 4LZ. Start 1pm. Fully booked but contact teresa.poole50@ virginmedia.com to see if any cancellations.
AVON Lin Lewton was the proud winner of the skittles tournament at our Sharpness rally, with Chris Dean coming out top in the killer match. Well done both of you. A couple of quizzes, meals in the club and a new game “Who’s the wettest?” after a short ramble along the canal and marina. There were several contestants, but as any adjudication would have involved inspecting undergarments, we counted it as a draw. Our AGM was combined with Halloween celebrations at Whitstone School, Shepton Mallet. A few obstacles were soon overcome and the whole weekend was fun and successful. Rex and Max, please come again, you did a great job decorating the hall for us (I think Mum and Dad >> December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 25
GROUP NEWS might have helped a little bit too). Jane organised some quizzes and we were entertained by “Two of a Kind” on the Saturday. They were a talented duo, so I think we will be seeing them again! Thank you to all the hosts and helpers at both rallies. 8-11 December at Holiday Park Unity, Coast Road, Burnham on Sea, TA8 2RB. Christmas celebrations with 3 nights on hardstanding with EHU included, £14.25 pupn A short walk through the dunes to miles of sandy beaches, or buses pass by for Burnham on Sea and Weston super Mare. This is a bookable rally, text Avon secretary, Christine on 07976 306116. There is an option to include a festive buffet (including roasties!), and dancing to a fabulous band, Six Machine, at the nearby Tavern on 9 December. This is also bookable, direct with the venue, https://bookwhen.com/ blp/e/ev-s8ub-20231209190000. Christmas Party Night with Six Machine, a Fantastic 6 piece live band – booking by bookwhen.com at £29.95 per person. Dress is smart casual. Come and join us for just the camping or turn it into a really festive occasion, either way, we look forward to welcoming you. 29 December to 1 January we are returning to Whitstone School at Shepton Mallet, BA4 5PF. There are plenty of charity shops, supermarkets and independent traders and eating establishments within an easy walk, but we have plenty planned to keep you occupied during the days and evenings alike.Jigsaws, games, tea/coffee, cakes and quizzes in a well heated room. The theme throughout will be ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’, so thinking caps on to decorate your tables and yourselves. The scope is endless. £18pupn (couple), £12pupn (singles). Music will be by Pete and on 30th we will have “Your very own end of the pier revue”. Sing, dance, recite, act, it’s time to get rehearsing. Fancy dress on New Year’s Eve and we will serve a light supper (incl). There will be a small charge for optional cakes with your tea/coffee and a sausage bap brunch. A text on 07881 558995 will help with catering but otherwise

bookings will not be necessary nor taken. Unusually we have to leave on 1 January, but we will give you a chance to recover from the celebrations by not closing the site until mid-afternoon. Upcoming rallies: 8-11 December Christmas celebrations at Holiday Park Unity, Coast Rd, Burnham-on-Sea TA8 2RB. Plus optional festive buffet at The Tavern. 29 December-1 January New Year at Whitstone School, Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 5PF.
CHILTERN Only the one gathering to report on this month, our AGM weekend Oct at the St Peter’s School in Old Windsor. It is unfortunate that this year we had to turn away wouldbe campers from staying overnight, we seem to have outgrown the premises. Nevertheless all the vans arrived during bright sunshine and easily manoeuvred into slots around the buildings. The fun of parking up the vans is guessing what size might arrive next and wondering if so and so has changed their van? The weather then took a dislike to us and we were grateful for the school hall as the heavens opened. The social evening on Friday, although dry, was attended by everyone wearing fleeces and thick coats, as the heating failed on us! AGM morning had many day visitors arriving by car, swelling the attendance at the meeting to 51 members. Meetings concluded and many attendees decided to brave the weather and walk into Great Park. The evening started off very soggy as the storms carried on, even the entertainer was caught as he soldiered on unloading his stage equipment. A great night, with great music from a great entertainer Dale Diamond. Pete Upcoming rallies: 29 December-2 January is our NYE rally at Cottesloe School, LU7 0NY. Bookable.
EAST MIDLANDS AGM at Colsterworth Rally. Not a good start as the weather was atrocious and the field was waterlogged. We were able to get 22 vans parked on hard standing. The hall was opened for a welcome hot drink on the members' arrival. On Friday evening Debbie handed out a musical instrument theme table quiz. The chairman welcomed everyone to the rally and thanked them for battling through the conditions to get there. A cold buffet was organised by the committee. After the game of bingo and raffle tickets being sold a numerical quiz was handed out and won by Barbara. This was followed by our annual conker tournament which was won by Kieron (thanks Dave for providing the conkers). On Saturday morning the AGM was held and the committee was selected for the following year. It marked the end of an era when our secretary of eight years Sue Pilkiw stepped down. Saturday evening it was a Halloween themed evening. Lots of members dressed in their scariest outfits. Entertainment was provided by vocalist Jimmi. A brilliant night had by all. >>

LeoBay Campsite
Highfield, Rushenden, Alsager Avenue, Queenborough, Kent ME11 5LA
A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE... LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay! LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are
welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

GROUP NEWS At Sunday’s coffee morning the chairman thanked everyone for making it a successful weekend and also wished Jean, Kieron and Gordon a happy birthday. A beautiful rendition of happy birthday was sung by Jane. Paul and Jane drew the raffle then members made their way home. Yvonne Thirty-one vans attended the Cosy Collingham Rally. The weather was dry but very cold. Friday evening the chairman welcomed all the members . The evening entertainment was Bingo, quizzes and open the box which was won by David Payne. They all seemed to enjoy the bonfire toffee and bonfire lollipops which were on the tables. Saturday afternoon, after members had visited Newark or Collingham, tea and cakes were provided. Thank you Michelle for the home made cakes. In the evening the best guy competition was judged by Anne Taylor. The winner was Jean Cresswell. Well done Jean. Sparklers were provided by Michelle and Dave and some members relived their youth by writing their names in the air with the sparklers. There were then quizzes and a game of last man standing. During the night hot dogs were available thanks to Dave, Mandy and Kate. They went down really well. It was the first rally for fund raising for our new charity which raised £100. Sunday morning the Chairman thanked everyone for making it a fun weekend, thanked the stewards for their hard work and wished everyone a safe journey home.
East Wessex's celebratory cake Lancashire group - Stuart the Zombie
EAST WESSEX Hello everyone. Well our AGM has taken place and it’s a pleasure to report that we now have a new committee of eight; the four members from last year have been joined by Larry Spiers back again as Chairman, Dave Powell as Treasurer, Steve Huckstepp who will be organising our entertainment and continuing as webmaster, with Graham Jepson as a new committee member. Allen Scott has changed roles and is now Vice Chairman and rally officer. And all this happened without Kate Jones needing to fix her beady eye on anyone, which is remarkable. The AGM rally took place at Weeke Primary School in Winchester, a popular venue conveniently close to the town, which all seemed to enjoy despite the truly awful weather which most of us could not avoid. 14 East Wessex vans welcomed two visitors from Chiltern and one from the West Country as we celebrated the Wessex 60th anniversary with a 60s themed weekend. Pete entertained us with his music on Friday night, whilst Saturday night’s entertainers were a young duo, Emma and Paul, who proved to be a real find as they played and sung 60s music very well indeed and got most on the dance floor. Sandra organised the evening’s buffet and Allen obtained a lovely 60th celebration cake with prosecco to wash it down; Kate presented our group with a plaque. Apologies to anyone who had been hoping to go to Fort Widley for Halloween; the rally was cancelled as many members feared boggy conditions similar to last year when most had to be towed off. The Committee wishes all East Wessex and other MCC members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hopes to see as many of you as possible over the next 12 months. Upcoming rallies: Please note both must be booked in advance. 8-10 December at Easebourne CE Primary School, Wheelbarrow Castle, Easebourne, GU29 9AG. Come and join us at our Christmas rally with buffet and professional entertainment (Singer Alexis). Hardstanding and hall. Buses to Midhurst and on to Chichester. £25 per unit per weekend, £23 singles. Arrivals from 5pm. To book contact Allen 07411 955133. 29 December-2 January at Burnham Copse Primary School, New Church Road, Tadley RG26 4HN. New Year Rally. Entertainment includes singer Jake, dancing to Pete’s disco, games and quizzes. American Supper on New Year’s Eve, so please bring a plate of food to share. Hardstanding and hall which will be available to use all day. £35 per unit per rally; £30 singles. Arrivals from 1pm. To book, contact Steve 07913 923888 See our website: eastwessex.uk or our facebook page @eastwessexMCC for any updates.
ESSEX AGM meeting at Chelmer Valley High School: We had a very successful weekend with a good turnout of members. Friday we had background music and a chat with our friends, with 28 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2023
GROUP NEWS the usual game of bingo. We sold raffle tickets, the prizes were kindly organised by Barbara and Nigel Mossman. At 10.30 Saturday morning our AGM started, and we now have a few new committee members as follows: Chairman Nick Rogers; Secretaries Liz Dyer and Linda Grahame; Treasurer Gary Green; Rally Officer Alan Slatford; Yvonne Green, Sue Rogers, Chrisy Scotchmer, Christine Potterton, Anne Fuschillo. I would like to thank all the committee from the past year with special thanks to Chairman Bob Thorne, Rally Officer Carol Thorne, and Secretary Barbara Mossman, who have now stood down. Saturday daytime some of us ventured out. I went out with Jan and Pete to Chelmsford for a pub lunch. Saturday evening we had a lovely buffet, the food was supplied by Tracy (07917 624124), highly recommend. We also had a singer for the evening, Gordon Dann, he was kindly organised by ex committee member Alan Reeves. It was a lovely evening. Sunday morning we met up for tea and coffee and biscuits. Another successful weekend. Nick Rogers
KENT On a sunny weekend in October the Kent group were found to be at Sandwich Junior School for their AGM Rally. 31 members attended the AGM on the Saturday morning where we had a chance to say thank you to a number of people who after a number of years on the committee stood down for a well-earned rest. The AGM went very smoothly and the new Kent Committee for 2024 are as follows: Chairman - Brian Graves (Digger), Treasurer - David Missions, Rally Officer - Dave Thorpe, Assistant Rally Officer - Angie Thorpe, Safety Officer - Steven Jarvis, Entertainment Officer – Lesley Clarke and Secretary - Sharon Jarvis. Our President Lee Wood’s term of office had come to an end after two years of loyal service and he was able to hand over his chain of office to Sheena Karim who was unanimously voted to be our next President. Please do all that you can to support them all throughout 2024. Once the AGM had finished some members went into town for a stroll whilst others went to the pub for some great food! Our very own Vanessa entertained us superbly on the Saturday night with a full and varied programme of songs that got us up dancing the night away. Your full Rally Programme for 2024 has been booked and hopefully be with you as you read this article. Please do take time to view the programme and book the dates in your diaries. The committee are hoping to provide a varied programme of rallies including ones with professional entertainment, quiet ones to just soak up the beautiful Kent countryside, we may even try to do some group rambles as well as weekends that are just pure fun and silliness! Full information on what to expect at each rally will be communicated via the Kent Group of the Motor Caravanners’ Club Facebook Page – so watch that page! Each weekend rally does need hosts to “own the
weekend.” The minimum you need to do is welcome people as they arrive and make sure they are pitched up in a safe manner and slot in a coffee/tea meet up at some point during the weekend. The rest is up to you! It can be a quiet weekend or one filled with silliness or perhaps you would like to take us on a ramble, preferably to the local pub but the extra fun is all up to you. Please do speak with the committee if you need any advice or help and don’t be put off if you can’t be there to pitch people up, we can find someone to do that. So, please do come along to the rallies where you can meet up with old friends and make new friends. If you are new to rallying then please do be encouraged that we are a friendly bunch and would love to meet with you. Upcoming rallies: Our first rally for 2024 will be 9-11 February at Sandwich Junior School, St Barts Road, CT13 0AS with professional entertainment on the Saturday night and some fun and games on the Friday night to try and take away our winter blues! School is a short walk from the historic town of Sandwich. City of Canterbury is a short bus ride away. This is a bookable rally with a £15 deposit. Cost pupn is £15. Start time 5pm. Please contact Sharon on kent@motorcaravannersclub.co.uk for any bookable rallies.
LANCASHIRE Our AGM rally started on 6th October, a warm weekend. 41 Lancashire ‘vans attended. Lisa opened, welcoming everyone and explaining safety and domestics. Tickets for various games of chance went on sale and then Allan called the bingo. Pauline demonstrated new line dances so that enthusiasts could practice. The evening wound down early to enable the room to be made ready for the AGM. Saturday and the AGM went smoothly and the group has a full committee once again. Then ‘the usual girls’ went shopping for the food for the evening buffet. The ukelele band practiced, followed by the preparation of the buffet, thanks was given to all helpers. So as well as the super buffet there was also a fantastic artist who had the floor full of dancers all night. She included line dance songs and even joined in the dances. A good night enjoyed by all. Sunday and Lisa closed the rally by giving thanks to all helpers then the raffle and bonus ball winners paid. Everyone was wished a safe journey home. The second rally, 27th October, was our Halloween meet at Whittingham & Goosnargh, we park, spookily, where the old mental hospital once stood. The day started in sunshine, later it was dull but the only rain was Saturday overnight. Thirty-nine ‘vans attended. Lisa welcomed all but especially three pairs of new members, Debbie and Paul, Michelle and Fran, Sandra and Mark. The usual tickets were on sale followed by three games of bingo. Then line dancing, including Fireball, the current favourite. Then Bethia introduced a new challenge, Eat the Dangling Donut! Lots of laughter and advice. More dancing to wind down the night. 10am Saturday and Crafty Crew met to make Halloween table decorations. Pm and it was curling or Scrabble in the >> December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29
GROUP NEWS room or just chat. The evening started with a parade of all those in costume. First the children and then the adults. The winner being Stuart the Zombie. Allan and Brian then presented Take Your Pick. They chose new member Michelle to be The Dolly Dealer. She coped admirably with the cards and the presenters. Host Marie presented the playing card on your chair game followed by a Halloween quiz. The night ended with Best of Friends and a couple of slow dances. 11am Sunday and we met in the games room for coffee and chair Lisa’s chat. She presented our new members with a plaque, then thanked the hosts for all their work, Dean and Jack for the music and all other helpers. She also thanked me for being scribe as this is my last report. Winners of games were paid and we were all wished a safe journey home. Happy New Year everyone! Scribe Alma Upcoming rallies: 8-10 December at Canberra Club BB2 7LF. Christmas dinner. Bar drinks. Bookable. 28 December-1 January at Warton CC LA5 9QJ. New Year. Own drinks Bookable.
MOTORCYCLE 26 September- 5 October for our AGM and final rally at Greenhill Park, near Stratford upon Avon. A change of venue from our original plans, as the allocated sloping ground at Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club was too wet to park our vans and trailers. Thanks to social media, Facebook, WhatsApp and a few phone calls the AGM was still on. We informed the group to delay their arrivals and the committee headed to Stratford, only to be rewarded with a lovely private site, perfect for our needs. The next day Covid decided to make its presence known, so we had to revise all our plans again, still holding ride outs to Wellesbourne Airfield, Henley in Arden and Stratford upon Avon, The Red Lion Bike Night at Claverdon and a couple of local National Trust Properties. Any afternoon/evening meetups were all held outside to reduce the risk of spreading Covid. We even held our AGM outside in the sun with a steam train driving by during proceedings and ended the meeting with a group photo (see below). Our site was close to a viaduct and we enjoyed walks along the canal to the craft village, cafe and pub. Our new committee is: Chairman – Martin Borrill; Vice Chairman/Webmaster – Ian Jefferson; Secretary – Wendy Jefferson; Treasurer – Sue Louch; Rally Officer – Steve Louch; Motorcycle group

NENE VALLEY At Cogenhoe on the Friday we managed to welcome and book in our members before the rain came down, with visitors from Anglia and Chiltern. By the evening we were able to go into the Hall to catch up with the news, and celebrate John's birthday. Thank you John for the liquid refreshment, and I'm not talking cups of tea! Saturday dawned bright and sunny, with some members taking the opportunity to walk to the local cafe for breakfast. At 2pm the serious business commenced, all went well, and we are now pleased to welcome Margaret Harris onto the Committee. In the evening we had a buffet tea, followed by the raffle, a quiz and plenty of chatting. Members gradually dispersed after coffee on Sunday, looking forward to our next rally at a new venue. If the weather allows, I wonder if anyone will go up in a glider? Kathleen Upcoming rallies: 2-4 February at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield, Sibbertoft Road, Husbands Bosworth, Leics. LE17 6JJ. Cost £12 pupn. We are hoping to provide hookup, for which there will be a charge if taken (approx £10 per w/end). Booking details are given on the Nene Valley website www. nenevalleymcc.co.uk.
NORTHERN COUNTIES Hello again everyone. Happy Christmas to all our MCC friends near and far. Unfortunately our Brunton Tractor Rally had to be cancelled by the venue organisers due to very bad weather and extreme winds which were forecast. Our Halloween rally at Guisborough, 27 to 29 October, was at risk of being cancelled as we only had a sole host. Fortunately Mark and Sue Lang stepped in at the last minute to save the day and assist John Ternent – many thanks to them all. A good time was had by all and a few people got dressed up for fun and games which were simple but very entertaining. Some members got the bus to Whitby on the Saturday and found it was Goth weekend and very busy with plenty of fabulous costumes to be seen and the rain stayed away. We hope to see you at a rally soon. Don’t forget to check our website for rally information and important updates: www.mccnortherncounties.co.uk. Paula & Tony Edwards Upcoming rallies: 8-10 December is our Christmas Party at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart. This is a bookable rally and may be full by the time this magazine is published. 29 December-1 January is our New Year Rally at Redcar Racecourse. Again this rally is bookable. >>

GROUP NEWS NORTHERN IRELAND Portadown is always a well-attended rally being held at the Rugby club, which has an excellent menu and spacious lounge bar, combined with the annual County comes to Town festivities with free festivities, attracting in excess of 25,000 people. Lesley and Paul Rixon were our hosts for the weekend, ably assisted by Uncle Andy and Fireman Sam, who were kept very busy, especially on Friday afternoon parking up almost 65 vans. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to them and raincoats were the necessary dress code. Friday night the rain never mattered as many were in the clubhouse enjoying catching up with friends and watching the All Blacks rugby team on television. Saturday morning thankfully the weather was dry and we were all entertained watching the rugby matches being played on the surrounding pitches from our vans, this is what is called 5* seating. At noon the only place to be was the centre of town (a very short walk away, great location, thanks to our rally officer Roy) where the entertainment was mighty and events too numerous to mention. Many took advantage of the many shops where “sale” signs encouraged savvy shoppers. Saturday night the clubhouse was packed (almost standing room only) as the world cup rugby featured Wales (early) followed by the Ireland match. Excellent meals kept the kitchen very busy and the bar must have lost count of the almighty number of pints being sold – must support the local industry (that’s my excuse). At Sunday coffee morning we were all treated with a super array of home baking kindly supplied by Lesie Rixon, who along with Paul were celebrating their wedding Northern Ireland group – Presentation of the Margaret Davidson cup to Andy Clarke
anniversary. The weekend “quiz” took the form of a word search, with what must be a record of 32 correct entries, won by John McCune. We had two number plate draws, won by Tom Adair and Paul Rixon. First time ralliers Kevin and Nicky Murray, Des and Tricia McCaul, Janice Weir and Graeme Stitt were welcomed by the Chairman, who also gave congratulations to those celebrating yet another birthday, I won't name them as they really don’t like to remember just HOW old we are all getting. The chairman wished us all a safe journey home. Sam Arlow Newtownards AGM weekend. Our hosts Robbie and Irene Hewitt and co-hosts Roy and Jennie Dowie parked up 70 vans in dry weather. Bingo on Friday saw a newbie caller (myself!) and great merriment was caused by her lack of knowledge re the “bingo lingo”! The beautiful cream Aran jumper, scarf and hat set made by Agnes Adair was duly raffled off which raised £200 towards the Chairman’s Charity, Diabetes NI. Saturday morning involved the members' meeting and the AGM followed. A minutes' silence was observed for those members who were no longer with us. A cheque was presented to Naomi Breen of the Diabetes NI to the value of £805.22 and she gave a short address thanking the club. The Margaret Davidson cup was presented to Andy Clarke as he attended the most rallies in the past year. Then a lovely lunch was provided, organised by Ruth Ross and her team, before everyone then went to do different activities in the afternoon. Some went shopping, others socialised, the weather was rainy so we all made the best of it! Saturday night held our usual raffle after much dancing went on with music from Dave Kane. The raffle raised £325. At our Sunday get together there were many celebrations announced, from birthdays of members including one who was 70! Anniversary milestones were also noted from a 30th to a 51st! A new van and a new home were called out re other members. Finally, a welcome was made of members returning after being away for a while as well as to a couple visiting from the Anglia group. Here is to our next one! Adeline McClenaghan Broughshane Ballymena rally. On Friday the 13th October we arrived at Clarke headquarters in Broughshane for our rally hosted by David, Christine, Gordon and Margaret, signing in and parking was efficiently done assisted by some heavy showers, later in the evening we visited Ballymena Golf Club where we had been given the use of a function room for a meet and greet, a few drinks and a game of bingo. On Saturday we woke to a mixture of sunshine and showers and some of the members visited the shops. At 2pm we were given a very interesting tour of Clarke factory by Michael Clarke and manager Stevie Neeson who explained the work and ongoing development of the company – photos can be viewed @remarkableclarke on instagram. We met again in the Golf Club for an evening of music and dancing to Joe Mac, whilst the raffle brought a lot of attention with prizes kindly donated by local businesses in the area. >> December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33

GROUP NEWS Sunday morning coffee was well attended with a great selection of cakes and shortbread supplied by Christine and Margaret, sampled by all. The number plate draw was again won by you’ve guessed it Sam Arlow and the quiz by Beverly Coulter, with a cheque for the weekend going to NI Air ambulance, the chosen charity of Clarke.
NWM&NW Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and good wishes for the New Year from the Committee. Our rally at Stone Cricket Club proved to be a popular venue back in October. The weather forecast was very favourable and the proximity to the town attracted visitors from East Midlands, Lancashire, South and West Wales and Severn Valley. We had a total of 33 vans. Things began a little shaky as the gates were locked when the hosts arrived and the parking was more restricted than was expected from previous visits, but everyone coped well. Only one mishap, when our East Mids visitors were caught out on some soft uneven ground. They remained stuck until Sunday when the cricket club's roller pulled them out assisted by some strong, fit men pushing. (I think that was what they told me!) As the weather was fine and dry on Saturday most went into town to the farmers' market or just to visit the various cafes and hostelries. Many returned with purchases. The canal was a popular venue for walkers and cyclists as shown by a selection of photos on Facebook. The afternoon was warm enough for sitting out chatting or playing Cub/Kings. In the evenings the cricket club bar was well supported where the small group from Severn Valley were in fine voice for Amanda's birthday on Saturday. A most enjoyable rally for all. The AGM at Checkley was far less fortunate with the weather. There had been very heavy rain on Thursday and early on Friday resulting in quite wide spread flooding, which prevented some members from attending. Even the car park had some lakes until Mike cleared the grids of leaves. We had the usual bingo on Friday when the winners kept repeating, Darren, Phil and Christa all won twice. The official business meeting passed off well and Christa was voted onto committee. Otherwise there were no changes. Jon presented the Ed Joy trophy for attending the most rallies, again to Darren and Shirley and the Malcolm Griffiths trophy for committee to Penny. Following the coffee/tea break (a big thank you to Shirley and Pam) was the members' meeting with some useful discussions taking place. A special thank you to Maria Hill for taking the minutes of both meetings at very short notice. Some went for lunch at the pub next door while others possibly caught the bus into Uttoxeter. In the evening there was a supper of baked potatoes with a choice of fillings. Thank you Pam for the tasty chilli and the delicious dessert of apple crumble and custard. It was enjoyed by all; followed by lager for the men and Prosecco for the ladies. Cheers everyone! Big thanks also to Shirley for 36 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2023
all her work in the kitchen. Jon set some table top quizzes on the topics of garden weeds, Dingbats and films. This was won by James and Aide's table. The weather was quite warm, dry and sunny for our departure on Sunday after coffee morning and raffle. Thank you to all who braved the wet weather to make it an enjoyable weekend. Details for booking rallies or if you think you can host or help with rallies contact the rally officers, Jon and Elaine: email nwmnwrally@hotmail.com or mobile 07525 851394. SCOTTISH We had a successful AGM rally at Monturpie Caravan Site near Leven. Twelve vans attended the rally including new members Gary and Patricia Shand and visitors from S&W Wales Clive and Mary Hanman. The awful, awful weather conditions caused some late call offs but this was to be expected. On the Saturday evening all 22 members at the rally had a very good high tea in the site restaurant. Twenty seven Scottish members attended the AGM on the Sunday afternoon. Pleased to report a committee was elected including two new committee members. Plus a number of people have already committed to host rallies next year. A good buffet was provided by the site restaurant afterwards. The rallies organised for 2024 are on the group website and you will see there is a good spread of venues from southern Scotland right up to the Highlands. Further details of booking details will be published in the New Year. We also have a new Facebook page where information regarding rallies etc will be published. For those of you who haven’t found it yet, it is Scottish Group of the Motorcaravanners’ Club. Just answer two simple questions to join. The committee take this opportunity to wish all members a good Christmas and even better New Year.
SERG Our last rally together, a shame SERG has had to leave the MCC group, as we had no one to take over the committee. The group has been running for 24 years , meeting once a year in the UK and enjoying rallies away in Europe. We belonged to F.I.C.M. and every year travelled to a different country to enjoy their part of the world. It had been one of my best experiences to visit such unusual places. Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Greece just to name a few. Their hospitality was first class every time. Thank you. We met in Morton in Marsh for out last AGM on the 1518 October. We had a ploughmans supper, wine and a raffle >>

SEVERN VALLEY On 6th October we held an additional Rally at Newlands Campsite Malvern. On what turned out to be an exceptionally sunny weekend 12 vans turned up, with 9 vans from Severn Valley, of which two were new members, one from S&W Wales, one from East Midlands and one from Avon. Everyone turned up to the Meet and Greet on the Friday evening which lasted until 10pm. On the Saturday we held a surprise party for Jan and Mick Emeny as it was their 56th wedding anniversary. Newlands provided tables and the urn with Haley, Di, Gail and Andrea providing the food ranging from wraps, sandwiches, jellies and cream, assortments of cakes and jam & cream scones.
On the Sunday coffee morning we were joined by two new members who were in the area and wanted to see what a rally was like and what we did. A big thank you for Newlands which allowed anyone who wanted to stay on until 6pm free of charge. On 27th October we held our AGM Rally at Alverley Sports & Social Club. We had a very disappointing turnout with only 18 vans turning up. 16 Severn Valley along with Jackie & Graham Durkee from CoM, along with a couple from N. Counties. We held a fancy dress Halloween disco on the Friday night with buffet which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Our AGM was held on the Saturday morning with a number of members travelling up by car. We bid farewell to Chris Windmill (Chairman) and Janet Emeny who were both standing down from the Committee. Janet and Mick Emeny won the Barlow Trophy for attending the most number of rallies over the year. A new Committee was elected with Phil Care - Chairman, Haley Scarborough - Secretary, Andrea Care - Treasurer, Gail Cole -Welfare, Andy Mawdsley - Website/Info. Tony Barnsley remained as the committee with the roles of Vice Chair and equipment. We would like to thank Chris and the outgoing Committee for all their hard work over the past year.

December and Christmas so close. By now the new committee voted in at this year's AGM will be up and running. This therefore is my final newsletter as group Scribe; a job I have enjoyed for eight years. There was one October rally to report on. Ably hosted by Tony Razzell, assisted by Sandy and Ian Swain, Tony was a tad apprehensive to take on the ‘challenge' of hosting; however he did a grand job and all SWP members who went along thoroughly enjoyed all on offer and a snap decision was made to book the 2024 AGM at Woodlands from 10-15 October. Here is Tony's report: The rally held on 12-17 October was at Woodlands Leisure Park. 20 vans attended (13 SWP; one West Country; one West Wessex; one Avon; three Severn Valley and first-timers Pauline and David from NWM&NW). The weather for the first 3 days was not good, but fortunately the rain held off for each arrival. The other 2 days were fine and sunny, allowing the Sunday coffee morning to be held outside. Ralliers took the opportunity to visit the wonderful surrounding area of Dartmouth, by taking the hourly bus service. One couple ventured to take the round-trip of steam train, boat and bus but unfortunately arrived back in a torrential downpour. Everybody took advantage of the extensive programme arranged with the help of Woodlands. Nick Nash entertained us on the Friday evening, followed by dancing. The success of the evening demonstrated by everybody taking to the dancefloor. On Saturday afternoon we visited the very interesting and entertaining falconry display, with a special extended
GROUP NEWS session for the SWP rally. Following the display some members looked quite different with reconfigured hair styles. Once we returned back, it was time to get ready for the evening meal in Ray's Diner (not Ray & Barb’s new camper, hahaha). An extensive menu was offered by Woodlands and accompanied by Jason, brought out of retirement to entertain us with his banjo and many Irish Folk songs. The next day was the feeding of the Meerkats, which was a real pleasure. This unfortunately meant walking through the Theme Park, and some ralliers experiencing acute deja vu from their previous visit when younger. This only encouraged them to chance the rides again. This time however, creating pains in the body, which clearly they never got before, when on the very fast toboggan run. Others took the more sedate tractor rides with the kids and a calming walk around the lakes. Everyone had a magical weekend. A big thank you has to go to Sandy and Ian for their continued support throughout and to the Woodlands staff. Upcoming rallies: 7-11 December at Cofton Holiday Park, Dawlish, EX6 8RP. Christmas Party rally. 30 December -2 January at Trevarrian Holiday Park, Newquay, TR8 4AQ. New Year Bash. 16-19 February at Trevarrian Holiday Park, Newquay, TR8 4AQ. Valentine's rally.
S&W WALES Hi everyone, wow, what a lot of rain we have had; today I was told that the Elan dam had overflowed which must be amazing to see but so much water causes problems too so I hope you are all safe. Tycroes Rugby Club, 6th-9th October: It was the first time at this venue and it followed a night of very heavy rain so our hosts Sandra and John, Sue and Keith had to park up the vans to avoid the puddles – no easy task. Thanks to Sue and Keith for standing in for Sid and Brenda Crimes as Brenda was taken ill and they had to go home; we hope she is well soon. They parked up 20 vans including first-timers Les and Chrisine Symonds. The ‘puddles’ problem will not happen at future rallies as the car park is to be gravelled. The Club was very welcoming and many went there to watch the Wales/Georgia rugby match on Saturday afternoon – a great atmosphere and great result. Throughout the weekend many used the regular bus service to Ammanford. In the evening we were entertained by a singer known as ‘Raven’ with much dancing in the comfortable clubroom. On Sunday morning there was the usual coffee morning with raffle; Chair Betty thanked the RFC for the excellent service during the weekend and reminded everyone of the forthcoming AGM. Rally Officer Keith reminded everyone of the forthcoming rallies before everyone made their way home. AGM at Caerphilly, 3-5th November: We were at our usual venue, Ysgol Cymraeg Caerphilly, for the AGM and our hosts, Betty and Glyn with Sue and Keith parked up 30 vans in very wet conditions. It continued to rain very heavily all night and
the following morning but eased off in the afternoon. This was a special weekend for the South & West Wales MCC Group as it was celebrating our 60th anniversary and Kate Jones, the MCC Club Chairman, was spending the weekend with us. We all met up in the hall in the evening for a catch-up and bingo called by Keith. It was a lucky evening for Sue who won two bingo prizes. The AGM was well attended with some members driving just for the meeting. Thanks were given to the whole committee, especially the Chair, Betty Bishop and the Treasurer, Glyn Evans for their hard work throughout the year. Kate Jones presented Betty with a plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary, Betty thanked her for coming and presented each member with a commemorative keyring. The Trevor Miles trophy for ‘Outstanding contribution to the Club’ was presented to Muriel and Dave Butt; well done to them both. Our Rally Officer, Keith, revealed the rally programme for the coming year with new venues and an increased number of rallies, well done Keith. More rallies means more hosts needed so please support your club and offer your services. In the afternoon the weather had improved for many to visit the town and admire the poppy decorated castle grounds. In the evening we started with our raffle; Sue and Keith won the lucky van again! We then shared a huge buffet before being entertained by Emma-Marie. Everyone present thoroughly enjoyed her excellent singing which was interspersed by her entertaining actions and many accents. A very good night indeed, or as Emma-Marie would say “a bangin’ night”. Message from our Chair, Betty Bishop: I would like to thank you all for your support and friendship during the year and to wish you all a very Happy Christmas. I look forward to meeting you again at the 2024 rallies, best wishes, Betty. Listed below are the excellent forthcoming rallies – some are bookable so make sure you book early by contacting Keith, our Rally Officer, and do not miss out. Upcoming rallies: 29 December-2 January at Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly SA17 4UL. New Year Party with live entertainment. Elton John Tribute Act. Dress in Rugby Shirts. Bookable. Starts 2pm. 15-18 February at Saint Richard Gwyn School, Barry CF63 1BL. New Venue. Valentine’s Weekend. Hall, Showers, Toilets. Starts 12noon. 8-11 March at Tycroes Rugby Club SA18 3NY. SUSSEX Best wishes to you all and hopes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Following our successful AGM at the end of October, despite the horrendous weather and treacherous roads, we managed to have a great rally. A new committee was formed, with new members joining with some existing ones, to ensure our group continuing for another fun filled year. Many thanks go to Carole December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 39

GROUP NEWS and Gordon Bennett for their sterling service for many years and we wish them a happy ‘retirement’ from the committee although I am sure they will continue to support our future endeavours, as well as being on hand to offer advice and encouragement. A warm welcome goes to Jackie Spring and Mick Boyce who have volunteered to join the happy throng consisting of Clive Smaje (chairman), Dave Harris (vice chairman), Jo Smaje (secretary, scribe and Loyalty scheme administrator), Mary Campbell (treasurer), Marilyn Harris (rally officer), Alan Campbell (entertainment organiser), Mick Boyce (health and safety officer) and Jackie Spring (anything else we can think of). Jeanne Boyce will remain as independent auditor. A big hand for our new committee who I’m sure you will all welcome and give your ongoing support and help! The programme of rallies for 2024 has been arranged, with hosts required for many venues, which will be published in the new Sussex booklet coming out soon. Please feel free to offer your names as hosts, help with the running of the rallies, as well as attending. The new rally packs will shortly be available, don’t be put off by the paperwork, nothing much has changed but all the ‘i’s are now dotted and ‘t’s crossed to ensure that we conform to all the new regulations and advice. Help will be given when required if you’re unsure about anything. Back to the AGM; we had a great time, with bingo adding to the fun of the first night. We were treated to an excellent Ploughman’s meal prior to the festivities of Saturday evening. Table decorations and fancy dress played a big part before the live performance of The Replays, a group which had previously played at the year’s National Rally. They were superb! The music was to our tastes, it’s nice to recognise all the tunes and know all the words, ensuring we could dance and sing along to the whole set. Thanks to Martin Remnant for his choice in booking such a wonderful group. If you couldn’t make the meet, you missed a treat!

Upcoming rallies: There are still a few places available for the Christmas rally at Thomas a Becket Junior School, Glebeside Ave, Worthing, BN14 7PR on 15-17 December. Arrival time 6pm. There will be a craft workshop, including book folding (which we trialled last year) and a table top sale (with a £3 donation per table to our chosen charity, the Air Ambulance Service) so search out all those unwanted gifts and accessories looking for a new home. This will take place on Saturday afternoon, before we are entertained by one of our favourites, DJ Tom, to dance the night away. Please keep to the 6pm arrival as it is a working school day. Further details can be had on our Facebook page or from Marilyn, our excellent Rally Officer. The New Years rally, joint with the Kent group but hosted this year by the Sussex committee, is at St Richards Catholic College, Ashdown Rd, Bexhill on Sea, TN40 1SF on Friday 29 December-1 January. Arrival time 3pm. Due to the start of the school term on Tuesday 2nd January, we have managed to negotiate a late finish of 4pm on the Monday, ensuring you have time to fully recuperate! The first meet of 2024 is our popular afternoon Soup Meet at Dial Post Village Hall, RH13 8NJ on Saturday 13 January from 12 noon. There will be a variety of soups with rolls available as well as the handing out of the new Programme for rallies. Don’t worry if you can’t make it as these (the rally programme, not soup!) will be posted to non-attendees. Once again, season’s greetings, hope to see you all soon.
WEST COUNTRY Many thanks to the 28 vans from West Country who attended our AGM at Riverside, we were certainly blessed with the weather, allowing people to get out and about as well as enjoy sitting outside enjoying the sun. A new committee was formed, and members got a chance to see the proposed programme for next year. No members had any issues that they wished to raise concerning our events run this year, so we assume everyone has enjoyed everything they have attended and are happy with the groups' organisation. Every event this year was hosted by a committee member, and it was decided that next year this will not be happening, so we need members to step forward and offer their help. No one will be left to host alone, and someone will always be on hand to help, but with 371 members if we all take turns it will mean that everyone can enjoy the events and enable the committee to be rewarded for their work organising so much behind the scenes to keep the group going. So quite simply no host no rallies, so please offer to help and enjoy the events you have enjoyed for longer. We enjoyed music and bingo in the evenings and every member who attended for the full event were treated to a Sunday carvery on site. It has been agreed that next year’s rallies all remain bookable due to limited numbers on some sites, a date when bookings are open from will be advertised before the new year, any last minute spaces at >>

GROUP NEWS events will be advertised on our facebook page for anyone unable to make a firm commitment early in the year. Please make sure you have your cash in an envelope marked with your details and your current membership cards ready to show on arrival at every event you are attending so that we can check you in quickly avoiding any hold ups at site entrances. Our second rally in October was at Kingsdown Tail where we had a total of 36 vans from many different groups. Despite the forecast saying the weather was going to take a turn for the worst we were still blessed with good weather enabling people to sit out and get out on the bus to Sidmouth or Seaton. Durning the evenings we had the use of a room and played bingo and card bingo. With a music quiz one evening and a good old sing song. The restaurant did pizza for us on Friday evening and cooked breakfast on Friday and Saturday morning. Many thanks to Jim and Jenny, Ian and Angela for steeping forward to host. Our last event of the year is Christmas at Riverside 30 November-4 December.
WEST WESSEX Twenty motorhomes arrived for our meet at South Lytchett Manor, hosted by Sue and Chum; one from Yorkshire, two East Wessex and 17 West Wessex. Most people made good use of the buses and went to Poole, Wareham and Swanage. On Saturday afternoon, everyone gathered outside the host’s van to share a drink and gossip in the sun as the weather was very kind to us. This was another relaxed weekend which was much enjoyed by everyone. Our AGM weekend at Devizes Football Club wasn’t blessed with the same good weather. Some of the parking area was inaccessible. It was with great skill and tenacity that our hosts, Dawn, Ali, Jackie and Graham managed to find a suitable spot for all of the 41 vans that arrived. The newly refurbished clubhouse saw lots of activity all weekend. Some watched the rugby on a huge tv, there were quizzes, bingo and a ploughman’s supper. A Craft Fare was held where some of our very talented members displayed and sold their wares. There was also a tombola and ‘name the teddies’ stall which raised £115 for the West Wessex charity.

The Saturday evening Party Night saw a huge array of witches, ghosts and other scary beings dancing the night away to the disco. Dawn and her helpers had decorated the hall to create a very spooky atmosphere for the evening. Teresa and Peter raffled a magnum of wine for the MCC charity and raised £90. The evening was enjoyed by everyone and the whole weekend was a great success. At the AGM on Sunday morning many items were discussed, reports approved and the committee re-elected unanimously with the addition of Stephen Snook. The Dorset Blind Association was chosen as next year’s charity which begins in September 2024. A ‘60th anniversary’ plaque was presented by Kate Jones, Chairman of MCC, and an anniversary cake was enjoyed with a cup of tea by all members Upcoming rallies: 30 November-3 December our Christmas Party weekend will again be at Herston Yard Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Swanage, BH19 3DJ. Starts 12 noon. The cost is £90 or £75 for single occupancy. There is also the option to stay for a fourth night at an extra cost of £20. This is a full facilities site and includes electric hook up, water and waste drain on each hardstanding pitch. The clubhouse will be open in the evenings. There will be quizzes, bingo, and music. The Christmas Party, on the Saturday evening, is our opportunity to dress up, enjoy a hot and cold buffet and then dance until late. It’s rumoured Father Christmas may be in attendance again this year. Sunday carvery is also available and bookable and payable to this site on arrival. Please see the West Wessex MCC page or Herston Yard Farm website for detailed directions to this site. If you have not booked it is essential to ring your host, Maria, (07887 393137) to check if spaces are available before travelling. 29 December-2 January is our New Year Celebrations at Saint Michael’s Middle School, Wimborne BH21 7AB. What’s New from RoadPro? BR Systems’ 12V Bike Lift If you have an electric bike or two, you’ll know how tricky it is to load them onto a conventional bike rack: at around 25 Kg each, it's not surprising. With a BR Systems Bike Lift, you'll be able to load the bikes at close to ground level, taking away all the hassle and effort. The Bike Lift can be installed on most motorhomes that will take a regular bike lift and existing mounting rails can be used. It’s powered from the leisure battery and remote control operation makes using the Bike Lift as simple as pressing a button. You can see videos of the Bike Lift in action on our website or come to our Daventry premises to try it out for yourself.
Megasat Sat-Domes
The latest Kompact 3 sat-domes from Megasat will enable you to watch TV all over the UK, just like you do at home. The satdome automatically locks on to the satellite and, unlike conventional dishes, is unaffected by wind. The Kompact 3 will pick up UK channels as far into France as the Bordeaux region. Further south, you can easily change satellites and receive UK news channels and more all over the European mainland.
Campere Modular Solar Power System If you want solar panels on your motorhome but don’t have much spare space on the roof, the Campere system could be just what you need. Using special panels that can be linked together, Campere panels enable you to install far more solar capacity than conventional ones. The end result is that you’ll be able to charge your leisure batteries faster and more efficiently, giving you the ability to stay off-grid for longer. There’s another benefit to fitting Campere panels: they weigh up to 30% less than similar panels.
See the reviews on Trustpilot, Google and our website if you worry about getting installation work done on your motorhome. They’ll set your mind at rest!
In this illustration, the motorhome has 900 Watts of solar capacity on its roof!!

GROUP NEWS YORKSHIRE 13-15 October, Wetherby Racecourse. This was the weekend of our AGM, we had 35 vans in total: 29 Yorkshire (one first timer), one E.Mids, one N.Counties, three Lancs (two first time with Yorkshire), one Essex. Friday was a bit wet but the rain stopped for a while, enabling us to book everyone in and distribute the paperwork for the AGM without getting too wet. In the evening we had a Pictionary Quiz along with Play Your Cards Right with “dolly dealers” Paul and Malcolm. Bingo was next, followed by a game of Pantyhose Bowling, this produced lots of laughter. Lenny won the men’s heat, Sarah won the ladies heat and then also the final, well done. The evening ended with a karaoke session and music provided by Mark. Saturday was cold but sunny and we held the AGM in the morning, with a disappointing attendance of only 50 members plus the committee, some members did send their apologies. As no nominations for new committee members were received and the current committee are stepping down for various reasons we are holding an EGM in December. In the meantime the current committee agreed to continue in their roles until then. A big thank you to the committee for all their hard work over the past year and thank you to the members who did attend and even came by car just for the meeting.
At the Members' meeting it was agreed that the November rally at Drax and the Christmas Rally at Driffield would go ahead as arranged and depending what happened at the EGM a decision would be made regarding the New Year Rally. After the meeting a few members strolled into town for refreshment and to explore the shops. The evening brought us food in the format of a lovely buffet, bonus ball draw won by our first timer Nigel and raffle of which there were many prizes. We were entertained for the evening by the lovely Miss Marina Mae, an excellent night was had by all. Sunday was another sunny day, we all met for coffee and to finish off the lovely cakes and savouries left over from the buffet. Then it was time to pack-up and go home, although some of the ralliers were moving on to Bridlington for a few days. Upcoming rallies: 8-10 December at Driffield Showground YO25 9DN (Xmas Party).

ALL TREATS NO TRICKS Frances and Michael Howorth take a grandchild to Wallonia over Halloween and discover that Belgium’s take on this ancient Christian festival is delightfully different
T
here was an air of childish excitement as we arrived in the Port of Dover ready to board our Irish Ferry for a channel crossing to Calais. Our granddaughter was in full-on adventure mode for her half-term holiday break with us and we were caught up in her excitement. Visit Wallonia, the tourist organisation for the French speaking region

of Belgium, had put together an exciting visit of the region to show off what a great touring destination it was for those who, like us, use our motorcaravans out of season. Wallonia is one of three regions of Belgium – along with Flanders and Brussels. It covers the southern portion of the country and accounts for 55% of Belgium's territory but only a third of its population. Our hosts had pulled out all the stops devising a route for us to follow, that not only took in the region’s breathtaking autumnal beauty, but they had also added in a ghoulish twist and delightfully mischievous sense of humour that was not lost on us as grandparents. Our crossing on the mighty ship, Isle of Inishmore, was smooth and comfortable as it always is with Irish Ferries. It was made even more so, by riding in the Club Class lounge

with its splendid sea views and complimentary food and drink. Upon disembarking we took to the French roads and headed towards Lille and shortly thereafter crossed the invisible border into Belgium. Roads in Belgium are, for the most part, clearly signed and are gloriously toll-free, making touring here a lot cheaper than France. While their roads have significantly less potholes than the UK, fuel on the continent is now more expensive than at home. Gone are the days of arriving in Calais on fumes and filling up there. Our current advice is to fill just before you leave England. Our destination on day one was Floreffe, a delightful campsite on the banks of the river Sambre. But before we got there, we had planned a stop to view the funicular boat lift at Strépy-Thieu just past Charleroi. This
wonderous feat of engineering is the largest boat lift in the world (outside China) and lifts commercial barges 73m from one level of the canal to another. Not only is it fascinating to watch in action, but the site also has an excellent museum and interesting interpretation centre. That night, with Voyager tucked up beside the Sambre in the Aire de Floreffe, we ventured into town and enjoyed our first meal in Wallonia at La Romance Brasserie. It is a clever mix of styles that is part American diner part traditional Belgium eatery. Suffice to say, the choice of food was excellent, and the taste even better. Dinant was our next stop. A delightful town on the banks of the river Meuse, it offers a day full of activities and plenty more if you have time to stay longer. Start your day by heading up the winding road towards the Citadel that overlooks the town. Park in a very motorcaravan-friendly car park and explore the fortress that has many stories to tell. Perhaps the most poignant of all being the sacking of the town in 1914 when it was invaded by German forces. The lives of 674 individuals, including men, women, and children, some as young as three months were lost on August 23, 1914. Shortly afterwards the town lost two-thirds of its domestic properties to the fire. Leave your van in the car park and take the cable car into town. This >>

The museum at House of Leffe

Saxaphone model on the bridge across the Meuse in Dinant
is where, in 1814, Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone was born. Today the city continues to play tribute to its famous son through concerts, events and exhibitions. The most prominent of which is Art on Sax, an urban exhibition which sees saxophone sculptures 3.3m tall and weighing in at 100 kilos, spread across town. Each is painted so as to pay homage to various countries around the world where saxophone music is enjoyed. The British tribute can be found on the Charles de Gaulle Bridge. Stay in town for lunch, (we enjoyed ours at Maison Solbrun), and then visit Patisserie Jacob. Here you can buy Crouque de Dinant, an incredibly hard biscuit. Baked to be sucked or dunked, you should not try to bite it, because you might break
a tooth or two. The story behind its origins suggests that once, centuries ago (in 1466), the town was under siege. With nothing more than honey and flour left to eat, bakers mixed them together to create a cookie. They sell well locally in summer, but it is in the winter, close to Christmas, that they are eaten all over Belgium. Our granddaughter loved them and viewed it as challenge to chew them without dipping! Before catching the cable car back to your motorhome (or climbing the alternative 408 step staircase) you should walk to the House of Leffe for a visit and beer tasting. Well, why not? Here you can discover eight centuries of brewing history and taste the eight beers brewed by them. Maison Leffe is a museum
and tasting bar located in the chapel of the former convent of Bethléem, now a hotel called La Merveilleuse and not far from its original site, the Notre-Dame de Leffe abbey. The drive from Dinant to Han Sur Lesse took us through the pretty village of Celles, said to be the prettiest in the whole of Wallonia. Fear not if you miss it because there are at least 29 other villages hereabouts that claim the same distinction! Lest you wonder why there are no photographs of this picturesque hamlet, we can only blame the heavy rain as we drove through. Yes, sadly even in Wallonia it does, on occasions, rain! But that is one of the very few downsides of winter touring. The roads at this time of year were very uncluttered and, for the most part, very well maintained. The tourist authority Visit Wallonia positively encourages motorcaravans, or camping cars as they are called locally, to visit. Gigabytes of information including routes, maps and overnight stops can be found on their website. Other touring destinations should take note of this initiative, our world would be a happier place if they did! We spent two nights in the >> December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 49

delightful Aire de Han Sur Lesse. Facilities include hook up and water to every pitch and everything else except a shower block, for a very small charge. Within walking distance of good restaurants, the tourist office, and all the local visitor attractions, it is a great night-time stopover. That evening we dined well at Artur, a popular restaurant attached to a hotel just minutes from the campsite. The next day was Halloween and it was then that we realised just how differently the Belgians celebrate the occasion. In America, and even now in the UK, it is all about pumpkins and kids going from house to house with their chant of trick or treat.

extravagant tableaus and tourist attractions add in a touch of the macabre that, if anything, enhances the enjoyment of the occasion. The differences twixt the Belgium approach to Halloween and ours first became apparent when we ventured underground. We walked to the Grottes de Han a series of caves dating back some 3,500 years and created by the swirling waters of the river Lesse. Here, in vast caverns, illuminated stalagmites and stalactites are a sight not to be missed. But suddenly, and because it is Halloween, a scene unfolds where cave folk appear and come to life cackling and croaking in a spooky fashion. The children scream and hide behind the coats of the adults and magically the visit to that attractions metaphorizes and is greatly enhanced. The same thing happens, albeit differently, when we board the Safari train taking a trip through the wildlife park. Spotting wolves, bison, reindeer, brown bears, and wild boar is exciting enough, but when the Safari train stops, and mime artists appear in the form of fire breathing dragons, the tour takes on a whole new and utterly delightful dimension. It is not just dragons that appear. On one stop, it is trolls and goblins who break out into a juggling routine and in another, actors on stilts tower above us as majestically >>

It’s a pretty spot to wake up in and offers ample opportunity for waterside walks and strenuous hikes. Our final stopover point in Wallonia was Bouillon, yet another town set beside a river. This time it is the river Semois. The town is dominated by Chateau de Bouillon – a medieval castle. Visitors can explore an extraordinary maze of
tunnels and passageways leading through dark dungeons, to lofty battlements, towers and battlements all with splendid views over the river. As the sun sets the castle changes mood becoming enchanted by visitors carrying lighted torches in procession. TECH TALK with Gentleman Jack In this series of Tech Talk we will be looking at various sub-groups of fascinating motorcaravans and at some of their design features, all from an historical perspective. This month:
WEIRD AND WACKY…
W
unusual motorcaravans from lateral thinkers!
eb surfing for weird motorcaravans will result in many hits, but not all exist in real life. Some fakes are extremely sophisticated, usually computer generated by those with pointy heads with graphic design experience. Others are crude ‘cutand-paste’ jobs. All featured this month originated in America. The rest of the world has its share of motorcaravans created by blue-sky

thinkers, but the US of A is the world leader in the genre. Reader Fran Barrington starts us off with this ‘creation’ [1] which she found on t’internet. Her accompanying questions were, “Does this hold the record for the maximum number of wheels on a motorhome? And has it been used on the road? The answers are ‘No’ (I’ve seen a 32 wheeler in Arizona) and ‘Yes’ my research indicates
1 that it had been, but currently is stored on an RV campground and just driven on to its ‘slab’ (longstay hardstanding pitch) when required. In contrast, the long VW Transporter fifth-wheel [2] never existed at this length. Look carefully at the side windows and the pattern of curtains repeats, indicating that it’s a fraud! Not a fraud, but a product of a fevered imagination is this silver motorcaravan created out of two 1983 Mercedes-Benz estate 58 MOTOR CARAVANNER December 2023

a single Douglas Fir trunk. The exterior finish indicates that the creators might have been ‘bark… ing mad’, and were probably not as rich as the purchaser of our next mototorcaravan who (according to Caters News Agency) paid an extra one million pounds over the RRP to have his eleMMent Palazzo RV [6] finished in real gold. Double-decker motorcaravans are a periodic obsession, though [7] is the first time I’ve seen a trailer tent/ex-skoolie combo. One assumes that the top storey is folded into the original trailer for travel, but I’ve seen elevating-roof campervans travelling with the roof ‘up’! [8 & 9] are both truck campers (demountables in the UK) from Kamp King Koaches. [8] is an early single-cab fixed rear-panel version, [9] is a later triple-cab version with a fold-out rear wall. It also has the same roof extension and terrace as [8], though in the photo it is stored for travel. This actual example is currently for sale on www.nicetoownrv.com at $6,500 USD including the 1970’s Chevy base vehicle. Is [10] a boat or car? Neither, it’s a road-legal RV reputed to have been designed by a yacht marina owner…no surprise there! continued on p60 December 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 59

Amazingly both [11 & 12] will fit through a standard-sized American garage door. [11] is based on an Asian Tuk-Tuk, [12] on an Oldsmobile car chassis. I’ve lost track of the former, but the latter is exhibited at the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana.
