CoM NEWS
Update from the latest Council meeting Fire extinguishers As promised in CoM News last month, we are publishing the outcome of the Council of Management’s discussion concerning fire extinguishers, dogs in rally tents and drones. Some Groups had raised the question about whether Group committees have to carry extra fire extinguishers. As a result of that discussion, Keith Poole, the Club’s Health and Safety Officer, has written an article, see page 11 – please take time to read it as it affects all of us. Dogs in rally tents update can be found on page 8 and guidance of drone use at rallies can been seen on page 12. Membership fees At our AGM in 2022, we were asked to delay an increase in the membership fees until things settled down in a year or two. Our Financial Officer, Paul Maguire, explained that the Club must show an in-year, balanced budget, without eating into reserves that are necessary to ensure we have the funds available to continue business for at least two years. We listened… the topic of membership fees has been discussed regularly at CoM meetings
over the past two years, and fees have not been increased. However, at our last meeting it became apparent that, given rising costs and the need to set a balanced budget, we had to consider raising subscriptions. Keeping the increase to the bare minimum, the following was decided: • Full Membership for one year to be increased by just £1 per year, making it £37.75 • Associative membership for one year to be increased proportionately, to £19 • Full Membership for five years to remain at the current cost of £170 The increase will not come into effect until 30th March 2024. Please note, when you receive your reminder that your subscription is due for renewal by 1st April, you can still pay at the old rate until the end of March. Or, you could contact Head Office and switch to a 5-year membership, giving you a saving. Thank you to all members for your continued support throughout the year, we wish you all many more enjoyable hours rallying with the Club in 2024.
Club Insignia update
O
ur Club Insignia is currently under review by the Marketing Team as we are considering both the range of items we offer and explore different ways for members to purchase them. We will publish any updates in future magazines – so do keep looking out for Insignia News in early 2024. The Council of Management would like to acknowledge all the hard work and support that Marion has given our Club, always ensuring we have an excellent variety of insignia on offer. At every step, Marion has been ably supported by Maurice and we thank them both for their commitment and dedication to providing this service to all the Club members over many years.

his subject was discussed at the National Rally last May and has been questioned once again. With the backing of Council of Management, it has been agreed that if the tent in question is a private tent (eg, pop up with sides) and is only being used privately beside your unit with your friends, then it is your responsibility to look after your dogs inside of the tent and outside. However, if it is a Group communal tent and is erected in the field for all members to use – for a coffee morning, evening meet up, food or a game of Bingo – dogs are not allowed inside the tent for hygiene reasons and to be considerate to other members. Dogs can still be seated outside the communal group tent with their owners provided they are on a lead and cannot get into the tent, complying with the ruling of Communal Group tents so as not to
inflict any distress on members that are allergic to animals or have a fear of dogs. It is the responsibility of the Group Committee to make sure that these rules are adhered to for the sake of all members on the rally field. Keith Poole, MCC Health & Safety adviser.

Use of fire extinguishers on rallies An update from Keith Poole, Club Health & Safety Officer
W
ith most new motorhomes coming with a fire extinguisher fitted, it is not compulsory for groups to have a fire extinguisher or a fire bucket available, however it is strongly advisable to have something in case there is a small fire. Most groups have the statement on safety written into their supplementary document mentioning that a fire extinguisher is available with the stewards’ rally pack or van, along with a bell or horn to warn of a fire and to raise the alarm. However, fuel canisters, gas bottles, leisure batteries, electrical wiring and cooking in small spaces all pose increased risks of fire. Being in close proximity to neighbours and their equipment and activities is another potential hazard. Hopefully nothing catches alight, but if it did do you have a fire extinguisher to hand? And if so, is it the correct type? Traditional fire extinguishers are often pressurised and therefore
need yearly servicing at a cost and/ or have a limited life. Powder for example is also very damaging to both surfaces and lungs and can cause more damage than a small fire. What most people don’t realise is that the usage time of a 3.5kg extinguisher can be as little as 7 seconds, providing it has been serviced and the contents haven’t compressed of course. Not long to extinguish a fire! And you have to know what type of fire it is before you use a pressurised extinguisher. Using powder, for example on a frying pan full of oil will propel the flaming oil all over the place making matters considerably worse. There is no rule in the Motor Caravanner's CFG or the Natural England Guidelines at present stating that you should have fire extinguishers but mostly it is common sense to have a cylinder extinguisher or fire stick available for personal use in case of a small fire happening. Nobody should put their own life at risk of danger when a fire is
at the stage of getting out of hand and then it should be the job of the emergency services. BBQ fires can be a large hazard, with the flames getting out of control then it is the duty of the person to have a bucket of water or sand available to extinguish the flames. Once again, if too large, then it’s the emergency services department to deal with. As Health & Safety advice changes as years pass, then we, the members, have to encourage others to take the preventives when it is imperative that we have to think safety first. Once again, it is strongly advisable that we all have some fire protection available. Please make sure that all fire extinguishers are within date and are fully operational. Fire blankets are good for smothering the fires on cookers. Fire sticks are light, handy and very efficient in distinguishing the fire. >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 11

someone’s land without their permission, you could be liable for trespass, even if you do not personally go onto the land (although this is generally a civil rather than a criminal matter). Furthermore, you should check for any local bylaws restricting the use of drones. Some members are very concerned about drones colliding or crashing into their motorhomes and causing damage to their property. Others do not want their privacy invaded by having their photo taken without their consent. So all groups should set out guidelines as to where drones can be flown; for example in a field beside the rally field, at a safe distance of at least 50m away from any vehicle or as far away from the units as possible so as not to be of a nuisance to others or invade their privacy.

nformation about the two full day visits on Friday, travelling by coach. There are two, full day visits planned for Friday 24th May, both offered at cost. • Visit one: Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Museum and Woodhall Spa • Visit two: Skegness • Visits need to be booked and paid for at the point of booking. • Tickets are non-refundable. (though we would do all we can to resell your ticket if you are unable to go) • Space on the bus for a wheelchair or mobility scooter is limited. Please contact Anne Taylor to ensure we can accommodate your requirements before booking your trip. • The coach company we are using this year will allow small, well-behaved dogs on board if sitting on a blanket or on your knee, not on seats. Dogs are allowed everywhere at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Museum except the café. We have no information about whether you are allowed to take dogs into shops and cafes etc at our other destinations.
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre and Woodhall Spa Full day. £25 per person which includes admission to the museum. The aviation museum is situated on part of the old Royal Air Force airbase at RAF East Kirkby. It was opened to the public in 1988 by Lincolnshire farmers Fred and Harold Panton, as a memorial to their older brother, Christopher Whitton Patton, who was killed on operations during the Second World War. The airbase lost 848 aircrew and ground crew. The RAF Escaping Society collection is a tribute to all those who helped crashed airmen in occupied Europe whilst the chapel provides a peaceful place for quiet reflection. You will be able to explore aircraft, a collection of vehicles and see equipment and aviation artefacts alongside personal exhibits linked to Bomber Command. It is home to Avro Lancaster NX611, Just Jane and DH Mosquito HJ711. You will walk within feet of the aircraft.
Skegness Full day visit £15 per person There’s plenty to see and do when visiting Skegness, one of the top seaside holiday destinations in the UK. Take a stroll along the seafront and its family-friendly attractions, from the pier to 10 pin bowling, a funfair and crazy golf, or relax in the Compass Gardens, a great place to sit and watch the world go by. 14 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
One of the main features of the museum is the restored Original Control Tower. You can also view restoration work, including the Hampden Restoration Project and see exhibits that include a glimpse into what life was like on the Home Front. In the NAAFI, a wartime building, you can browse photos or treat yourself to a drink of tea or coffee and slice of cake. Please note that dogs are allowed everywhere on site except the café. The museum has a few wheelchairs available for public use, but recommend you contact them in advance to reserve one. The coach will then take you to Woodhall Spa, a beautiful village situated about 20 miles south east of Lincoln and a popular tourist destination. Its history goes back to Victorian times when people came to take advantage of the waters. The village has a variety of attractions, including the unique “Kinema in the Woods, Cottage Museum and several aviation heritage sites associated with 617 Squadron (the Dambusters) along with independent shops and cafes. Near the pier and the Pleasure Beach, you will find RNLI lifeguards and the even the opportunity of donkey rides. The resort’s beach has once again been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag award. If you are interested in sea life, why not include a visit to Skegness Aquarium or the Seal Sanctuary? With shops and cafes to visit and cafes, not to mention fish and chips, we’re sure you’ll find plenty to do.

his month’s Showroom Shortlist should be read as a follow-up to part one which was published in November 2023’s Motor Caravanner magazine. We have allowed slight slippage (around 1.38”/35mm) on our previous minimum length of 26 feet (7.925m) to facilitate the inclusion of a greater variety of base vehicles and body types. With windscreen prices of between £146,000 – £225,000, the featured four represent a serious investment by any standard. Interestingly, vox
pops at the recent NEC Motorhome and Caravan Show indicated that many attendees thought that, “Such pricey `vans will all be ‘A’-Class”. Actually, only one is, the other three are low-profile or Luton overcab coachbuilts, as illustrated by the Dethleffs Globetrotter XXL [1]. Close examination of these highly desirable mobile homes might leave the impression that there were some common furnishing themes among them. For example, all appear to favour the use of a gloss white finish to the high-level
locker doors, plus they all feature ‘designer’ (frequently leather) soft furnishing fabrics in the lounge. ‘Appear to’ because although the show and test examples did exhibit such commonalities, folk ordering a new one – as opposed to buying a stock vehicle – will usually be offered a selection of soft furnishing fabrics, and frequently also of the finishes to the cabinet-work. Few offer a wider choice than Niesmann + Bischoff [2]. Also note that the seat backrests in the N + B are ‘proper’ individual cushions, and not trimmed foam slabs. >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 17

>> Points to ponder Consider carefully the advantages and disadvantages of the significant size and weight of these vehicles. Don’t sign on the dotted line until you have had a meaningful testdrive. In addition, all drivers will need Group C1 entitlement on their driving licence. The old ‘form over function’ dilemma’ did rear its head. Typical kitchens [3 & 4] certainly have

eye-appeal and offer a variety of different storage. It was only whilst role-playing ‘chef-ing’, that in some it became apparent that if one uncovers the sink and utilises an electric kettle, there is only a smidgin’ of available worktop remaining…not good for folk who wish to create and cook, rather than just ‘warming-up’ ready meals. Finally, occasionally overlooked by both designers and purchasers is
HYMER B-CLASS MASTERLINE T780 Where better to start a review of Hymer Group’s European `vans than with the Hymer marque itself? Add MercedesBenz underpinnings and the result is an aspirational leisure vehicle. A design priority applied to the T780 was that it should have a (flat) level floor throughout its main salon. Tick there then…unlike in some M-.B underpinned competitors with up to five different floorlevels…a nightmare for anybody 18 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024

the nearside, and an inward-facing single seat across the aisle. The
comfort station is ahead of the rear bedroom, but can be made en-suite to it. Default sleeping mode in the bedroom is two easy-access single beds. Another (narrowing) single bed can be made from the lounge seating. Although an equine count of 150 is standard – as is a manual gearbox - every example we’ve seen advertised has been equipped with a 170bhp engine and automatic transmission. Price kicksoff at £116,000, but the addition of Premium Equipment Line, Autonomy, Arctic, Exterior Style, Living Comfort, and Driver Assist packs inflated the price by almost £48,000 for the pictured example in right hand drive.

NIESMANN + BISCHOFF ARTO 88 LF Niesmnn + Bischoff refer to the 88 LF as a compact Liner Class motorhome. Readers can make their own minds up about whether it is ‘compact’, but ever more specification enhancements and upgrades have definitely shifted the Arto upmarket from where its market placement was 25 years ago. Currently, it compares very favourably with their more expensive (and loftier) Flair range. Interior layout is similar to the Hymer as far as the bedroom. Here the 88F has an extra-wide peninsula double-bed, around which there is more under-step storage than ‘one can shake a stick

All Arto variants are based on the Fiat Ducato Al-Ko chassiscowl with the larger 88’s running on tandem rear axles. ‘Six wheels
down’ offers impeccable cornering and extremely assured braking. The quoted price above includes upgrades to the 180bhp engine and automatic transmission. Standard motive power is the entry-level 140bhp with a manual gearbox. Really, on a motorhome knocking on the door of £200,000? Go for It • Opulent A-Class • Huge teleporter-style shower compartment • Contemporary design signatures • ‘Rock Steady Eddie’ on-the-road. Bear in mind Entry-level engine as standard. LAIKA KREOS 5009 Kreos is currently Laika’s flagship low-profile range. If the Italian manufacturer’s name seems familiar in a non-motorcaravanning way, it is probably because you’ve a vague recollection that Laika was name of the first animal to orbit the earth…which is why Laika motorcaravans’ logo and badge feature a winged dog. There remains a frequently-voiced piece of received wisdom that German motorcaravans are the best-engineered. We don’t think that is always the case, and it is worth noting that the strong Laika bodyshell is very well-engineered indeed. Even the briefest of glances around the interior confirms that its design and execution is very contemporary – but crucially – it isn’t vacuously over-styled. Kreos runs on Al-Ko AMC independentlysprung and fully galvanised chassisextensions, with the ‘pointy-end being pure Ducato. The somnolent are accommodated in permanent longitudinal single-beds at the far rear and in a transverse double-bed 22 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
which drops down from the lounge ceiling. Quoted ‘from’ price is once again for those equipped with the 140bhp engine and a ‘stick-shift’. Go for it • Warm interior vibe featuring input from Giugiaro • Practical layout • Low entrance door threshold • 44mm thick aluminium inner and outer wall cladding Bear in mind On occasions Laika has been under-represented in the UK, but this should change with the announcement that Travelworld has taken on the marque. DETHLEFFS GLOBETROTTER XXL A9000-2 Dethleffs offer several ranges of motorcaravans monikered Globetrotter, but only the XXL is a Luton overcab coachbuilt underpinned by the twin rear-wheel drive ‘as-tough-as-old-boots’ Iveco Daily. 210bhp engine and seriously heavy-duty rear suspension make
these a ‘go-to’ `van for those wishing to take full advantage of the mega payload and/or to tow a heavy trailer. Dethleffs are the longest-established company featured here, they can trace their origins back to 1832. XXL is the only one of ‘our’ four `vans to offer six adult-sized sleepingberths and six travel seats, thus it is particularly suitable for large families with lanky teenagers and for groups of adults that wish to motorcaravan together. (Author has recently parked next to one accommodating members of a marine diving club.) Permanent single beds are above a large garage at the far rear, a huge transverse double-bed is in the Luton overcab, and the lounge converts into an additional ‘allover double. Thinking about the lounge reminds me to congratulate Dethleffs on designing a forward seating area that can be isolated from the cab.
Go for it • Bomb-proof mechanicals • Twin rear wheel drive • Ideal for stress-free mob-handed motorcaravanning • High-level forward bed doesn’t compromise the lounge Bear in mind Significant rear overhang with a (relatively) shallow departure angle Spec check Length: 8.86m (29’ 1”) Travel Seats: 6 Sleeps: 6 Power Train: Iveco Daily 3.0-litre 210 bhp Max payload: 1,558kg In a nutshell Big, bold, brilliant

IN FOCUS | HEATH & MOBILITY
MAINTAIN MOBILITY AND STAY HEALTHY Planning to use your motorcaravan well into your later life is a great goal, but extra years mean nothing if you are not healthy and mobile. Frances and Michael Howorth investigate ways you can carry on camping well into old age.
A
s we get older, mobility and flexibility do not come quite as easily as they once did. As our bodies age, so physiological changes take place. These affect your balance, stamina, and ability to move. Unfortunately, the more sedentary you become, the less mobile you will be, especially in your later years and the less likely you are to jump in the van and head for the hills. The best way to stay mobile as you age is to keep moving. And the best way to stay healthy is to watch your intake. Of course, the best time to start this regime is when you are young. However, if you are older and find that you just do not have the get up and go that you once had, there are things you can do to improve the situation. Sharon Basaraba, the awardwinning reporter and senior scientific communications advisor for Alberta Health Services in Canada, has written a book entitled How to Stay Younger. In it she suggests a few basic steps towards a healthy and
24 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
mobile lifestyle. We have selected some of her better ideas added in a few of our own and tried to keep it relevant to how we as club members enjoy our pastime.
CUT BACK ON BOOZE AND FAGS Stopping smoking will likely do more for your longevity – and your health in general – than any other change you make. Numerous studies have chronicled the toll tobacco takes on the overall wellbeing and health status of both men and women. More specifically, continuing a heavy smoking habit past the age of 40 has been shown to chop as much as a decade off your life. It can worsen many age-related
diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Smoking can lead to premature skin aging by breaking down collagen and elasticity. As a result, lines and wrinkles start to appear sooner and may be more noticeable and none of us fancy that! Alcohol also has a dehydrating effect on the body, and it too can accelerate skin aging making you look older. So, either abstain from alcohol or drink only in moderation. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT We know we should practise what we preach, but this a club magazine not a TV show and you cannot see what we look like! So please forgive us when we suggest you should maintain a healthy weight. While there remains some controversy about how obesity is measured most researchers agree that too much fat on your body predisposes you to many serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.
Obesity can also take a lethal toll on your liver, leading to fatty liver disease. What's more, too much fat on your belly is linked to metabolic syndrome, which includes symptoms like high blood sugar and elevated blood pressure, or hypertension. Finding out the right number of calories you should consume each day and starting a moderate and sustainable weight loss plan will help you avoid illness, make it easier to remain active, and help your body's functional (or biological age) stay as low as possible in the months and years to come.
TAKE A HIKE Pack your hiking boots and walking poles into the back of the van and plan to use them next time you venture out in the van. The benefits of being physically active are numerous: better cardiovascular health, lower risk of cancer and diabetes, improved stress management and increased longevity. A recent study on more than 416,000 men and women published in The Lancet showed that subjects who exercised an average of 15 minutes per day, at a moderateintensity (e.g. brisk walking), lived an
average of three years more, than those who did little or no activity. Other investigations have shown similar longevity benefits for those who keep moving. Whether walking, swimming, running, or some other activity that appeals to you, stay active to ward off disease, keep your bones strong, and your life long! DIET Eating a well-balanced diet based on fruits, vegetables, lean protein, plenty of low-mercury fish, whole grains and moderate amounts of healthy fats, has consistently been linked to increased longevity. Eat a proteinrich diet as protein is essential for building collagen and elastin, those substances that give your skin its plump, supple, smooth and youthful look. To get your recommended daily protein, include protein in every meal. That can take the form of lean meat, beans or peas, Greek yogurt, or even as a protein shake. Kale and avocado are rich in essential elements, which have several anti-aging benefits. Specifically, they can improve the >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 25
IN FOCUS | HEATH & MOBILITY
skin’s hydration and boost elasticity, as well as the fat under the skin (which gives it that plump, smooth appearance). Enjoy a couple of handfuls of almonds daily. According to Love Food, a study conducted in 2021 found that eating two handfuls of almonds daily for six months reduced pigmentation and wrinkle appearance among postmenopausal women. Almonds are rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E, an antioxidant. While supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals might help compensate for some missing components, most nutritionists advise getting your nutrients from food. Making healthy food choices, in the proper amounts (to avoid obesity), is a hedge against disease and a smart way to keep your body acting young. MANAGE STRESS LEVELS Even people who are very diligent with diet and exercise may overlook the impact of stress on their health. The fact is, stress has many physiological effects, including raising your level of cortisol, a stress hormone that can contribute to cardiovascular conditions, dangerous belly fat, depression and poorer resistance to disease. Combating stress is easier said than done. But stress can impact your gut health. About 70% of your immune system lies just beneath your gut lining, so impacts on gut health can increase your risk of autoimmune conditions and increase your susceptibility to common colds 26 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
and viruses. In a study on 861 older adults, those with the highest urinary cortisol levels had five times the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease, even if they had no history of heart trouble. Fortunately, stress relief seems to contribute to longevity, as suggested in a number of studies linking meditation with lower mortality. Why not try mindfulness meditation, selfhypnosis, or even just smiling more, to manage your daily stress level? Your heart and your frame of mind will be better off for it. Unplug from time to time. According to The Active Times, your cell phone can negatively impact your health in several ways, including by increasing stress and anxiety. And because stress and anxiety are linked to premature aging, spending more time unplugged can help you maintain your youthful appearance.
SLEEP Get adequate, quality sleep each night. We purchased new mattresses for Voyager at a recent campervan show and we are delighted with them. They are far superior to the standard block of foam that seems to come standard with motorhomes and campervans. When you sleep, your body releases hormones that promote cell turnover and renewal. Catching enough Zzzs is a must for giving your body that all-important time for rejuvenation. JOIN IN AND STAY SOCIAL Another important aspect of a longevity lifestyle is being part of
a larger social network, with the support of friends and family. It is one of the many benefits of belonging to a club like ours. In fact, in their research on 1,500 people followed from childhood into old age, psychologists Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin found that staying connected and remaining integrated within their community were some of the most significant predictors of greater longevity. If not all members of your social circle are up to the task, pick your team: a few friends and confidants can help you bear difficult times, and cope with hardship more easily – factors that will help your immune system keep you healthy. Socialise with your friends and open yourself up to making new friends. It turns out that having strong social connections has several positive effects, including lower measures of obesity, high blood pressure and inflammation, all of which can impact health and aging. Plus, people with strong friendships tend to feel more youthful and that means you’ll look more youthful too. There are plenty of opportunities to join in with others like-minded souls. Just scan through the rest of this magazine or get in touch with the branch secretary of the area in which you most like to use your van. Chances are you don't need to drastically change your daily habits to make improvements in these areas. Focus on progress, not perfection and over time, your body will be healthier and behaving like that of a younger person. The result? More years in your life and more life in your years.

ANGLIA Please note all rallies for 2024 that require booking, booking will commence at 12 noon on Sunday 7th January. All bookings are to be made to Teresa Poole, our rally officer on 01473 424330 or 07739 463321 or email teresa.poole50@ virginmedia.com. See your programme or Anglia website for rally details. Please remember that if you have booked a rally and are unable to attend, to let Teresa know so that your place can be given to another member. This helps us to keep the rally costs down. Twenty-eight vans came to Terrington St Clements, with visitors from Essex, East Midlands, Nene Vally and Lancashire. Friday evening there was tea, coffee and Chairman's welcome followed by a quiz from Derek which was enjoyed by all. Who knew that Buckingham Palace had 775 rooms? This was followed by three games of bingo which were profitable for some members. Saturday was a free day and a lot of members took advantage of the local bus service and visited either Kings Lynn, Spalding, Springfields Retail Outlet or Baytrees Garden Centre. Judging by the number of bags members had when they got off the bus, a good day out and some retail therapy was had by all. Saturday night was back in the hall and we were entertained by Mark Steele who had most people up dancing at some stage. A good artist who did some solo guitar playing as well as singing. Sunday morning was tea and coffee followed by Derek's Doggy dip, the two minutes' silence, then the raffle. As usual there were a lot of raffle prizes and a good weekend was enjoyed by all. A big thank you goes to Derek, Carol, Betty Rex and helpers for a great weekend. May I take this opportunity to wish all members a very Happy New Year and safe travels in 2024. Sandra
Upcoming rallies: 26-28 January at Roydon Village Hall IP22 5RB which is a bookable rally. Start time 4.30pm. Bookings to Teresa.
AVON Happy New Year to everyone. Avon looks forward to meeting old friends and new in 2024. Work is still continuing to complete the 2024 Rally Programme. In the meantime, many interesting rallies are confirmed. As soon as more are booked they will be advertised here, on our Facebook page, on the MCC Facebook page and on our website. The £1 rally fee is per rally, not per night. To whet your appetites, here are a few highlights. 14-19 March, 5 nights at Northam Farm, Brean, TA8 2SE. £19 pupn incl hardstanding and EHU, + £1 rally fee. This is a full facility site, easy walks to the beach and buses for Weston-superMare and Burnham-on-Sea. The venue requires that this is a bookable rally. Text Christine on 07976 306116. Easter will be at Wincanton Sports Centre, BA9 9RB, 28 March to 2 April, 5 nights. In May, 2-7, another 5 day rally at Abbey Hill Steam Festival, Yeovil Showground, BA22 9TA. £50 for the weekend (+£1 rally fee pu) to cover 2 adults and up to 3 children with free entrance to the show all weekend. In June we have our usual Cheddar Strawberry Rally 13-18 (5 days) and in July Tuckers Grave, Faulkland, near Radstock (13-18 June) and the Beehive Field at Bradford on Avon (18-23, 5 days). 2-7 August we return to the very polular Walcot Rugby Club which precedes the equally famous Bristol Balloon Fiesta. And now a biggy – 14 nights Holiday Rally at Orchards Holiday Park, Newbridge, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight on 9-23 September. Another full facility site. Ferries to the IoW are notoriously expensive but there is a special deal when you make your booking via the Holiday Park. Full details will be on our website, avongroup.co.uk. We look forward to welcoming you in 2024. ACG Upcoming rallies: 14-19 March at Northam Farm, Southdown Road, Brean, TA8 2SE. Bookable. Text Christine >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 27

GROUP NEWS on 07976 306116. Holiday Rally at Orchards Holiday Park, Newbridge, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight on 9-23 September.
CHILTERN May the New Year bring peace and contentment to all our readers. The group have finished a successful year of rallying despite the likes of storm Noa in April trying to stop us. All arranged through a great deal of hard work by our rally officer Sharon. Our group are too polite or didn't have any complaints about the meets but did make many appreciative comments, especially for Gt Bourton day meet with the bacon sandwiches, Hayling Island with all its local amenities, Basingstoke canal museum with great weather, lots of comments for Long Wittenham with its very welcoming social club, Stoke Bruerne with its huge rally field and great canalside pubs. All the rallies were only possible due to volunteer stewards who put themselves forward to benefit the rest of the group. To them a big thank you. Upcoming rallies: 19-21 January at Barnstones OX17 1QU. Bookable. V.H. Day meet 20 January at GT Bourton OX17 1FH, numbers requested for food.
EAST MIDLANDS Dinner Dance at Springfields. The committee welcomed 39 vans to our dinner dance which included visitors from Anglia and Severn Valley. On Friday evening the Chairman welcomed the members. There was one East Midlands first timer Ian and Jane. Bingo, raffle and lucky numbers on sale. Bingo played and then the Springfield team quiz organised by Anne Taylor which was won by John Jeys table. Well done. This was followed by karaoke. On Saturday members went into the Springfield shopping centre or into Spalding. In the evening it was get yourself into your glad rags ready for the dinner dance. After the meal members were entertained by Darren Yates and danced the night away. At the coffee morning on Sunday the chairman wished everyone a safe journey and hope they had enjoyed their weekend. Raffle was drawn and the winner of the lucky number was announced. Yvonne
EAST WESSEX Hello everyone, there were no rallies in November or the beginning of December. As it happened that may have been lucky as nature threw her toys out of the pram and sent deluges of rain, extreme cold and even snow and ice, guaranteed to test all batteries and heating systems. Still by the time you read this we will have had our Christmas Party rally and probably our New Year celebrations as well, but more of those next month. There are a couple of changes to the proposed 2024 rally programme discussed at the AGM: rally officer Allen is
now looking for a new venue for Easter as the provisional booking for Wooteys School in Alton fell through. We have also cancelled Fort Widley in Portsmouth in November, as members felt it too late in the year for a field rally. Rally booklets have not yet been finalised but will be posted out to all East Wessex members as soon as we can. A very Happy New Year to all and happy rallying in 2024. Upcoming rallies: 9-11 February at Ringwood Junior School, Hightown Road, Ringwood, BH24 1NH. Valentine’s rally with professional entertainment. Hardstanding and hall. No arrivals before 5pm. 1-3 March Easebourne CE Primary School, Wheelbarrow Castle, Easebourne GU29 9AG. St David’s Day rally. 15-17 March at Burnham Copse Primary School, New Church Road, Tadley RG26 4HN. St Patrick’s Day rally. See our website: eastwessex.uk or our facebook page @eastwessexMCC for any updates.
ESSEX 3-5 November was a new venue held at Venture Centre 2000 Manningtree. This was a themed rally, 'Around The World', hosted by Jan and Pete Watts. A good turn out, full car park. Friday evening we played bingo, sold raffle tickets and had drinks whilst catching up with friends in a very nicely decorated hall by Jan and Pete; flags, banners and maps from around the world which looked great. Saturday some went into Manningtree for pub lunches and a look around the shops. Others walked to a nearby garden centre which had a very nice cafe. Saturday evening was brilliant as everyone made a huge effort by dressing up in the outfits they chose for the country of their choice. Also we had a food share table so everyone brought along food representing their chosen country. So much lovely food to choose from. There was a quiz and we drew the raffle then people danced the night away to a brilliant playlist of various music set up by Pete. Sunday morning tea, coffee, chat and answers to another little quiz. Great weekend, lovely venue, a good time had by all. Sue Rogers Christmas rally – Boy, was it cold parking up 43 vans – the frost was already forming! However, the hall was warm and welcoming and we spent Friday evening catching up with friends, a couple of games of bingo and parading our Christmas jumpers. Saturday was equally perishing but many people braved the weather and went into Chelmsford shopping. The party evening got off to a good start – the tables looked festive and there was a special delivery from Father Christmas of a tub of chocolates for each van, before we tucked into the buffet. Tricks of the Trade made a return visit to provide the evening entertainment but sadly had to finish early as one of the two was taken ill. They were so upset to let us down but in true Essex spirit we got on with it! We drew the raffle and then each van was provided with a free raffle ticket which led to Elaine M and Ken C winning two special prizes of a free rally weekend. Nick provided a music playlist for everyone to dance to and the school caretaker gave us an extra hour in >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29
GROUP NEWS hall, so we partied the night away. Sunday morning we were back in the hall for mince pies and hot drinks. A big thank you to everyone who helped with parking, hot drinks, clearing up etc. Many hands. Chris P Upcoming rallies: 26-28 January at Chelmer Valley School, Chelmsford, start time 6pm. Do not arrive early as we have to wait for cars to leave otherwise it causes a jam and fractious car drivers! 9-11 February at Mayflower School, Billericay, start time 5pm.
ISLE OF WIGHT Christmas is over and we have all celebrated our Christmas rallies/meals. Our dinner was at The Fighting Cocks and overnight for our vans was accommodated. Members decorated their vans and a good evening was enjoyed including a secret Santa. Thanks to Cheryl and Andrew for arranging it. We are all looking forward to the new rally season in 2024. All that remains is to wish all members of the MCC a very Happy New Year.
KENT 1-3 December was our Christmas Rally at Greatstone, attended by 25 vans with guests from Sussex and Chiltern and hosted by the new Committee convened at the October AGM. All those attending deserve Gold Stars as it was an extremely cold weekend that tested not only our bodies but our van batteries too as temperatures plummeted. Matt RockinRobins entertained us on the Friday night with a mixture of music throughout the decades. Saturday afternoon people decorated their tables in readiness for our Christmas Party night whilst enjoying a hot mulled wine or two and the obligatory mince pie! Our Christmas Party night on Saturday evening started with a Christmas themed quiz which was admiringly jointly won by the Murrock family and Sheena, Liz and Holly. Many of us then danced the night away as Vanessa entertained us with a variety of songs including our favourite Christmas ones which we all heartily, but perhaps not in tune, sang together! Sheena supplied some smashing raffle prizes and we all shared in coffee and biscuits at the Chairman’s Chat on the Sunday morning. All in all, we had a wonderful but rather cold weekend! Our Rally Programme for 2024 is now available on the Kent MCC Website at kentgroupmcc.weebly.com with latest updates being communicated via our Facebook page – Kent Group of the Motor Caravanners’ Club. If you are aware of someone who does not have internet access, please consider calling them to keep them updated. Looking forward, our spring rallies are as follows: 9-11 February is our first rally in 2024 and is at Sandwich Junior School, St. Barts Road, Sandwich, Kent CT13 0AS. This is a bookable rally so please contact Sharon on kent@ motorcaravannersclub.co.uk to book. The school is a short walk from Sandwich town centre which offers the visitor a stroll around its many original buildings including several 30 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
listed public houses, gates in the old town walls, almshouses, churches and the White Mill. There is a lovely small nature reserve with good pathways, and down on the riverside a Viking historical group have a small living museum and are in the process of building a replica Viking boat. A bus ride away is the beautiful city of Canterbury. 15-17 March at St. Edmunds Catholic School, Old Charlton Road, Dover, CT16 2QB. The school is a short walk from Dover town centre, the castle and the White Cliffs. This is a bookable rally, please contact Sharon kent@motorcaravannersclub.co.uk to book.
LANCASHIRE We had 24 units making their way to Houghton Hall charity weekend on Friday 10 November. Lisa our club chairperson made us all very welcome. A warm welcome to newbies Brendan and Maggie McLaughlin. Allan Parker was on top form with his bingo calling. This weekend's charity event was a special one to raise money for the Southport Life Station which is very close to Mell Clements' heart and raised a substantial amount over the weekend. Saturday evening was a fun night with various games organised by Carole Westerman who could not stop Lisa from singing in the Key of Council Flat Ho. Ho. To top the weekend off one of our members put on a fabulous buffet and many thanks to the said people and the committee for helping out. On Sunday morning at 11am a minutes' silence was held in the hall in remembrance of the fallen. All in all it was a most enjoyable weekend away with many friends. Friday 18 November at Colne High School the theme for the weekend away was to be a Lancashire Night with your hosts being Alma, Brian, Barbara and Allan (ABBA). Eighteen units made it for the 5pm start in very bad weather conditions on the Friday evening and enjoyed a few games of bingo and dancing. Saturday morning another three units arrived to swell the numbers to 21 units. The afternoon at around 2pm was great fun with many games on hand including curling / dominos etc. With over 55% of the members dressed up in the Lancashire attire as we were served a lovely hot pot with fresh bread followed by various cakes. Take your pick/bingo cards game was the next treat in store, quickly followed by Allan's quiz. Big thanks to your hosts who had put the effort in to make a successful evening. Sunday morning at 11am we all gathered in the hall to say our goodbyes and everybody did help to put the School back how we found it on Friday evening. Apart from the dreadful weather a great weekend was had by us all. Thomas Stewart Mills
MOTORCYCLE Happy New Year to you all. This is the time when we look back and remember our ride outs in better weather and hopefully this review from Richard and Caroline will brighten your day.
GROUP NEWS After a brilliant summer attending several MCG rallies around our fair land it was time for us to head off to Spain to catch up with old friends and enjoy the early winter sunshine. So with the motorbike packed onto the trailer and everything else in the motorhome off we set. Due to a family wedding in Cornwall we took the Plymouth-Roscoff ferry for our outbound trip and headed south. We always take our motorbike with us when we travel abroad as it opens up a whole new world to explore and enjoy wherever we stop. We have also found that we feel a lot safer riding on the continent as there is far more respect for motorcyclists from car drivers than back in the UK. The roads are also far smoother and less crowded, making every ride out a real pleasure. Our trip this time was limited to just two months as we had another family commitment in early December so we decided to meander down to southern Spain as we knew the weather would be much warmer in that area. We took a couple of weeks travelling down, mostly stopping on Aires with an occasional campsite thrown in. We finally arrived at El Pino campsite in Torrox and decided to take up their monthly stay offer – which was quite a bargain as it included electric and Wi-Fi. Now after saying how much we love the roads in Spain I need to add that we are not that keen on riding around on motorways – far too boring. But this particular location is right on the coast road which is just fabulous to ride along, with the Mediterranean sparkling beside you. The ride to Nerja is a nice steady introduction to the delights ahead, with the ride from Nerja to Almuñécar being one of my absolute favourites – a real twisting turning road, up and down around the rocky landscape with glimpses of
Motorcycle group
delightful secluded bays popping up around every corner it seems. Caroline enjoys the beautiful scenery whilst I have an ear to ear smile that only other motorcyclists will understand! In the opposite direction (heading to Malaga) the road is totally different, quite flat, very few bends but lots of little villages and towns to explore – although this area is far more commercialised. It’s OK, better than the motorway as it’s next to the sea, just not my favourite – particularly as the white road markings are like riding on ice, even when the road is dry! Best of all though, the bike gives us the ability to explore any little road (or pathway) that we see that looks interesting adding a whole new dimension so our trips away. We would thoroughly recommend it to everyone.
NENE VALLEY The Nene Valley Group would like to express their thanks to Sue Brett who has just retired from her post as group Scribe after keeping us all well informed for a number of years. Unfortunately our planned rally for November at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield had to be cancelled due to the site being waterlogged. It was a very cold and misty Friday afternoon when our members and visitors started to arrive for our Christmas Dinner Meet, they were met by our Committee and duly sited and hooked in. The warmth and facilities of the Community Hall were most welcome in the evening, with a lot of catching up, then bingo and a quiz. Afterwards Pat and Jane served warm mince pies. Thanks also to Denis and Jane for the drinks and nibbles to celebrate Denis' 70th birthday. A sherry reception welcomed members on Saturday evening, complimentary bottles of wine were placed on the tables, and then our outside caterers served a really excellent meal. We had accomplished entertainer Micky John Bull, whose two sessions of humour and song were interspersed with a cracking raffle organised by Pat; thank you to those lovely people who donated prizes. Sunday morning saw us gently closing things down, but not until three lucky people had a share of the bonus ball money. Pat and Jane were in the kitchen again serving tea, coffee and biscuits, a big thank you to those who helped wash and dry-up, and the members for doing the table and chair moving for the second time over the weekend, and of course the Committee for all the work behind the scenes. Members that stayed until Monday were able to walk down to the church bell tower, where the villagers had carols, mince pies and switched on the Christmas lights on Sunday evening. Despite the sub zero temperatures it was a great rally and excellent company. Tony Upcoming rallies: 2-4 February at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield, Sibbertoft Road, Husbands Bosworth, Leics. LE17 6JJ. Cost £12 pupn. Start time 1pm (bookable). We are hoping to provide hookup, for which there will be a charge if taken (approx £10 per w/end). The weekend will include the opportunity to enjoy fish & chips, Haggis supper and Roast Sunday Lunch. (Please indicate >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 31
GROUP NEWS your food requirements when booking). 23-25 February at Wrenn Academy, Doddington Road, Wellingborough NN8 2JJ. Cost £12 pupn. Start time 1pm. (Bookable). Nene Valley rallies for 2024 which are marked as having limited space are bookable. Booking details are given on the Nene Valley website www.nenevalleymcc.co.uk.
NORTHERN COUNTIES Hello again everyone. The only rally we have to report on was a Blucher Social Club 3-6 November 2023. We had 17 vans with a visitor from Lancashire, hosted by John Ternent and Lesley Keegans. Lesley provided a lovely cake to say farewell to the Group as she has sold her van. Lesley, we wish you well for the future and will hopefully see you around some time. John Ternent did the parking up and John Cottrell once again provided some brilliant quizzes. We will report on the Christmas and New Year parties will be in the next newsletter. Wishing you all compliments of the season and happy travels in the New Year. We hope to see you at a rally soon. Don’t forget to check our website for rally information and important updates: www.mccnortherncounties.co.uk. Paula & Tony Edwards
NORTHERN IRELAND Halloween Rally Report, 27-29 November at Foyle College, Derry. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by our experienced hosts Ruth and Dessie Ross, assisted by Maud and Mervyn Ross. The weather for the weekend was occasionally sunny, sometimes overcast with showers but temperatures were fine. Some members decided to head into the town centre while others stayed in their motorhomes. At 9pm there was a table quiz held in the school hall with approximately 25 members in attendance. We formed four teams of six with one spare. Ruth and Dessie were excellent quiz masters with many varied and challenging questions to test our brainpower (no mobile phones were permitted). The best part of the event was when one team member had to be the mummy and a second team member had to ‘dress’ the mummy in copious amount of wrapping (using the toilet rolls provided). Only one team managed to complete this task successfully who subsequently went on to win the quiz – well done team Skeletons. Junior prize winner was Megan who was responsible for the best dressed ‘mummy’. Saturday was a quiet day with people heading to town for shopping and entertainment as Derry gets ready to hold the largest Halloween celebrations in Europe. At 6pm the hall was opened to allow members to dress up their tables for Halloween with some excellent results. By 9pm the hall was buzzing with ghosts and ghouls, and these were just the members dressed up ready for an evening’s entertainment. At 9.15pm a mysterious redhead woman with the most fabulous legs entered the room 32 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
to much surprise. Who was this person? Was this a new member of the club? Who can tell? David Kane started up the music and the dance floor came alive much to the delight of the entire room who had dressed up for our Halloween ball and danced the night away with the help of a jar or two from the table. Midway there was a raffle, and many prizes were won and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Ruth Ross who baked the cakes as part of the raffle prize. Soon again the music sounded with Halloween classics, and we were joined on the dance floor by a large hippopotamus in a tutu dress and a ginormous dinosaur. Needless to say, the evening was an outstanding success with most surviving until midnight when they all made their way back to their motorhomes. Sunday morning was drier and warmer and welcoming. Our 11am coffee morning was held in the hall and our chairman David Kyle-Ewing welcomed and thanked everyone for making the weekend a success. The quiz (set by our hosts) was won by Raymond Elliott and the number plate draw won by Lowery and Sandra Smyth. We all packed up and moved on, looking forward to our next rally in Limavady. James Waddell 20 vans attended the meet at Armagh for the town's Georgan festival, stewarded by Noleen and Alan Fluke along with Robert and Joy and Lindsay Colter. The walk into town was only 10 minutes (for some!) so all of the events where easily reached. The town looked beautifully festive as all areas had decorations and Christmas lights. For those who wanted to participate, there were several Georgian themed tours, a wonderful animated lightshow at the Market House on Friday and Saturday evenings and horse and carriage rides, although pre-booking was necessary for many of these as they were incredibly popular. Saturday was a beautiful bright day and most people visited the town at some point to eat, drink and visit the shops and festival stalls. There was musical entertainment through the day with various bands, choirs and groups performing Christmas carols and even a pipe band. Russell Street was a popular place as various food stalls were located there and members had a great choice of food from burgers and hotdogs to crepes and pizza. On Saturday evening the bar takings of the Royal British legion were greatly enhanced by the presence of the NI group members and some heads and throats may have been a bit sore next morning! The rainy start to Sunday morning didn’t dampen the spirits as we gathered for tea, coffee and farewells. The winners of the Armagh themed quiz were William and Adeline Mc Clenagh and the number plate draw winner was Richard Ellis. Great town, great festival, great company and great craic.
NWM&NW I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas activities and celebrated the New Year with not too many resolutions
GROUP NEWS to break before the end of January. By now you should have received the Rally Guide for 2024. We hope you find some venue to join us. There are, however, still some rallies to report on. The rally at Wistanstow back in November 23 was attended by 21 vans, all NWM&NW, with new members Jim Williams, Jane and Ken Boughen and Pauline and David Phillips. Our hosts for the weekend were Mike and Linda Hastilow. There was the usual bingo on Friday with the wealth fairly well distributed. David, a new member, won some cash. Linda did the notices and welcomed our new members. Most took the bus into Ludlow on Saturday and as the weather was quite kind didn't return until late afternoon. For those remaining on site there was a new game in the Greene Room courtesy of Jean and Peter McConnell called Botcha. It's a type of bowls game which Peter said was included in the Para -Olympics. A big thank you Jean and Peter and to those who took part. Saturday evening was "curling" event with our hosts. Most members took part in teams of four. Some interesting techniques were on display in the attempts to slide the wooden curling stones along the floor. It was a case of lift your feet and mind your toes when the stones veered off course. Several rounds were held until there were three teams on the same amount of points, then there were three nail-biting play offs to find the final two teams. Darren and Shirley's team were the eventual winners. Thanks to everyone for making it an enjoyable weekend. Details for booking rallies or if you think you can host or help with rallies contact the rally officers, Jon and Elaine: email nwmnwrally@hotmail.com or mobile 07525 851394. SCOTTISH Our final rally of the year was held at Foresterseat Caravan Park, Forfar, from 10-12 November 2023. Eight Scottish vans attended including first time ralliers Gordon and Kath Nicol. A warm welcome to them. On the Friday two connecting tents were erected for a social evening which included soup and a quiz. On Saturday 16 members enjoyed a lovely meal in Sinclair's Kitchen restaurant which id adjacent to the caravan park. On Sunday morning before departing a coffee morning was held which included two minutes silence as it was Remembrance Sunday.
By the time you are reading this Christmas and New Year will be past and we will be looking forward to another rally season. Eric
SEVERN VALLEY The Severn Valley Group held their Christmas Rally on 24-26 November at Orleton Village Hall. Thirty vans attended this pre-bookable event – three from Avon, one from Northern Counties, one from Chiltern, two from NWM&NW and 24 from Severn Valley. On Friday night there was a meet and greet with the opportunity for members to give their Christmas jumpers an annual airing. On Saturday afternoon Severn Valley’s cordon bleu team prepared and served a fantastic christmas meal. Judging by the empty plates and comments this was a real success. Thank you to our amateur chefs – you did a sterling job. The festivities continued into the evening with live music from singer “Irene”. This was well received by all. The weekend ended on Sunday with a coffee morning and an opportunity to chat and say our farewells until the next rally.
SWP A Happy New Year to you all. My name is Sheila Revill and I would like to introduce myself to everyone as SWPG new Scribe... and also the new Group Secretary. This all happened when the Group held its AGM at Wooda Farm Holiday Park on Friday 10th November 2023. Barbara Noble stood down as Secretary and Scribe, along with Treasurer Cathy Gough (Barbara held her post for 8 years and Cathy for 10). The other officer roles to change are Vice Chair is now Linda Chudley, Rally Officers are now Mel and Pete Maddocks. Ray Noble remains as our Chair. The new committee and AGM Minutes, including the Members' Meeting can be found on the SWPG Website. Shirley Lulham and Linda Chudley have put together the following report from the AGM weekend:- We held our AGM weekend rally at Wooda Farm Holiday Park, Bude. A total of 21 vans attended with 20 SWP and one Avon. Hosted by Shirley Lulham, Barbara and Ray Noble. We also hired the barn for Friday and Saturday which fortunately was not as cold a building as we had thought. Despite a bad forecast the weather was quite kind to us and most ralliers ventured into Bude or wandered through the woodland walks on site. On Friday night we all attended the AGM and Members' Meeting, both being over by round 9.15pm, leaving plenty of time for a good natter and catch-up. On Saturday night we were entertained in the barn by local artist Gary McCausland. He delighted us with many songs we could sing along to and many braved the dance floor. Some of us were lucky enough to win a prize in Ray’s Special Raffle. >>

S&W WALES Hi everyone, gosh it has been very cold recently but a little warmer today thank goodness. By the time you read this report the days will be getting a little longer (slowly!) but I am grateful for any more daylight. I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and are ready for our rallies in 2024. Llandovery Market, 27-30 November. It was our annual visit to Llandovery and our hosts Geoff and Heulwen with Keith and Sue parked up 45 vans on a lovely but cold winter day. This was an amazing turnout for a winter rally so well done to everyone who made it. We welcomed first-timers Kath and Leighton Lewis, Nigel and Laura Rees, Chris and Roy Sherry with Rob and Jane Wallace joining us for a Taster Rally. The Friday evening was the ‘switching on of the lights’ by the local mayor with a bilingual count down; the street was closed to traffic and there were brightly lit stalls and music from local choirs to enjoy before many adjourned to the local pubs for the evening. That night the temperature dropped to -5c which was quite a shock; I had forgotten that Llandovery is on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons or Bannau Brycheiniog. On Saturday some took the bus to Llandeilo; it was such a beautiful journey through stunning countryside with incredible views. Llandeilo is a charming old town with many independent shops to browse before the return journey. The coffee morning was held in the auction ring with everyone wrapped up warmly. Barrie Lewis won the prize for the ‘Best Decorated Christmas Van’ and newcomer, Leighton Davies, won five raffle prizes! Our rally officer, Keith, reminded everyone of the upcoming rallies and appealed for more rally hosts; it is a good way to get to know everyone, you are not on duty all the weekend and you do not pay rally fees. Please contact Keith for details of vacancies. Message from our Chair, Betty Bishop: I wish you all a very Happy New Year and look forward to meeting you again at our 2024 rallies. Meanwhile, keep warm and safe. Best wishes, Betty xx Listed below are the excellent forthcoming rallies – some are bookable so make sure you book early by contacting Keith, our Rally Officer, and do not miss out. SUSSEX Happy new year to you all, here’s hoping we have good health and fantastic weather to enjoy our vans and travels throughout the year. With Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations behind us, we can all begin planning our next adventures. Our November rally at Bunn Leisure, Selsey, was a popular venue, with 38 vans attending from around the country, including members from the West Country, Anglia, Essex and Kent, as well as our own group. The weekend began with heavy rainfall, with the site staff managing to park (and in some cases re-park) us successfully. Wellies or flip-flops were an essential item for hooking up! Then there were two days of bright sunshine, with the rain and mud becoming a distant memory. The two nights of entertainment were busy but very good, with Toyah Wilcox as the headline act. Most managed to get to the Embassy for at least one performance if not more. A number of Essex and Kent members cut quite a dash in their 80s gear. Well done to all who dressed up! The courtesy bus was well used to navigate around the site. Chichester and Selsey were visited via the local buses as well as by Shank’s pony. Also congratulations to those who managed the walk to the beach without being blown away. Thanks to Marilyn and Carole as hosts and being on hand for any problems which thankfully were very few. Our next rally is the afternoon soup meet at Dial Post Village Hall, RH13 8NJ, on Saturday 13 January, 12.30-5.00pm. A selection of delicious home made soups will be available, with rolls, to warm you up, as well as the opportunity to meet friends old and new as well as information on our rallies for 2024. The new rally programme will be available but don’t worry if you can’t attend, it will be sent to your address. Then we have our Valentine's rally at Thomas A Becket Junior School, Glebeside Ave, Worthing, BN14 7PR, 16-18 February, start time 6pm. Celebrate in red with your hosts Marilyn and Dave (rumour has it that it’s a special birthday for someone!) and professional entertainment on Saturday evening. Check the Sussex MCC Facebook page for more details or the MCC webpage. Once again, have a wonderful 2024. Remember to join in, help out and host if you can.

part 3
Method Mix the chicken stock, garlic, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ginger, Chinese five spice, chilli powder and 300ml water in a large saucepan, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 mins. Taste the stock – add 1 tsp white sugar or a little more soy sauce to make it sweeter or saltier to your liking. Cook the ramen noodles according to the pack instructions, then drain and set aside. Slice the cooked chicken or pork, fry in 2 tsp sesame oil until just starting to brown, then set aside. Divide the noodles between four bowls. Top each with a quarter of the meat, a handful of spinach, 1 tbsp sweetcorn and two boiled egg halves. Strain the stock into a clean pan, then bring to the boil once again. Divide the stock between the bowls, then sprinkle over the shredded nori, sliced spring onions or shallots and some sesame seeds. Allow the spinach to wilt slightly before serving.
CAULIFLOWER MAC AND CHEESE The ultimate comfort dish with the addition of nutritious cauliflower. Prep: 25 mins. Cook: 30 mins-1 hour Ingredients (Serves 4) 1 small cauliflower, cut into florets 250g dried macaroni 50g butter, plus extra for greasing 50g plain flour 500ml milk 150g mature cheddar, grated Method Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Lightly grease a shallow ovenproof dish with butter. Boil the cauliflower for 10-12 minutes, or until very soft. Drain and set aside. Half-fill the same pan with water and return to the boil. Add the macaroni and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a saucepan over a low heat, then
CHILLI CON CARNE NACHOS Quick and easy, these nachos are a great sharing starter or side to a Mexican feast. Cook: 15 minutes Ingredients (Serves 2) 400g can chilli con carne 115g bag tortilla chips 1 tbsp Emmental cheese, grated 1 tbsp sliced green jalapenos Guacamole and sour cream, to serve Method Heat the chilli con carne in a saucepan for 5-10 minutes until heated through. Place the tortilla chips in a large frying pan on a low heat, carefully tossing to warm through. To serve, arrange the warm tortillas on a large plate or platter and pour over the chilli. Sprinkle with cheese and scatter over the jalapenos. Return to a grill to melt the cheese if desired. Serve with guacamole and sour cream.
whisk in the flour until the mixture forms a smooth paste. Cook, whisking constantly, for 30 seconds. Gradually whisk in the milk a little at a time, bringing the mixture to a gentle simmer and waiting for it to thicken after each addition. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until all of the milk has been incorporated and the sauce has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 6-8 minutes). Stir in two-thirds of the cheese, then season. Add the cauliflower to the sauce, blend until smooth using a hand-held blender. Warm the mixture through gently, adding a little more seasoning or milk, as required. The finished sauce should have the consistency of pouring custard. Drain the pasta and transfer to the ovenproof dish. Pour over the sauce and stir to combine. Sprinkle over the remaining cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden-brown and the sauce is bubbling. January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 43

ULTIMATE GUIDE exploring Europe
Driving your motorcaravan to Europe requires more planning than a trip somewhere in the UK. Frances and Michael Howorth explain what needs to be considered whether you are an experienced traveller or novice.

riving your motorcaravan overseas to continental Europe requires careful planning. More so than a trip around the UK. That impulsive, ‘let’s go away this weekend’ urge is not so easy to satisfy when you need to cross the channel. Doing that for the very first time can seem a little daunting and even those like us, with many miles of European motorways under their belt, know that the secret to success lies in thorough planning. The order in which you prepare

is less important than ensuring you have it done it well. So here we have created an aide-memoire for seasoned travellers and a 'how to' guide for first-timers. It reflects what we do before we leave the UK and what works for us. And if you do it differently, we would love to hear how, so please do drop us a line with your tips and experiences. Where, when and how While totally obvious, you first need to decide where you would like to go
and when. It is no good spending hours planning only to find that ferries are fully booked or that prices are sky high because your chosen dates clash with school holidays. Unless you live in Northern Ireland and are travelling to Ireland, leaving the UK in a vehicle involves boarding a ferry or going by train. be slightly cheaper than Le Shuttle which has a monopoly for tunnel traffic. Depending on where you live and the destination you have in mind, ferries might be more convenient. You can catch a ferry from Dover, Fishguard, Harwick, Heysham, Holyhead, Hull, Liverpool, Newcastle, Newhaven, Pembrook, Plymouth, Poole, and Portsmouth. Ferries travel to Denmark, France, Ireland, Spain, and The Netherlands. The tunnel on the other hand, only takes you between Folkstone and Calais, but it has the advantage of speed, number of crossings a day and no potential seasickness. We have enjoyed ferry crossings to and from Ireland with Irish Ferries, crossed the channel with DFDS and are booked to take our campervan to Spain with Brittany Ferries next
September. All offer excellent service and frequent sailings. We prefer not to travel with P&O remembering what they did to their crew. Ferry journeys are fun and it seems as if the holiday has really started the moment you board. Irish Ferries have a delightful upper deck lounge on their ships and in busy times it is a worthy extra consideration. That said, we also love Le Shuttle and enjoy the quick and easy passage it offers. Route planning Choosing the best route is not always easy. Nor is it a clear-cut decision as to which route is the best when it comes to value. Consider a journey from the UK to Bergerac in south west France, for example. From almost everywhere in the UK, Dover offers the cheapest channel crossing
option and is often the fastest route. Miles driven in France can be reduced by crossing the channel into Le Havre but the ferry fare from Portsmouth is more expensive and the crossing time is longer. Bergerac is almost equidistant from St Malo in France as it is from Bilbao in Spain. But a ferry to Bilbao from either Portsmouth or Plymouth involves at least one night at sea, and that is never cheap. You do not need to travel both to and from the UK using the same port, return fares are seldom cheaper than two singles. So rather than returning to the same place why not plan a route between two destinations both with ferries, or use the tunnel one way. We like returning by Le Shuttle as there are so many departure times. The cost of road tolls and fuel are other considerations to be made when planning. The French believe in double taxation when it comes to motoring. Not only do they tax fuel, but they also charge for fast road use. Travelling to Germany or Austria by road, for example, is more cheaply achieved driving through Belgium, a country that does not charge drivers for road use. Fuel duties across Europe vary, meaning the cost of fuel is not always the same. Gone, currently, are the days of arriving in >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 45

Calais from the UK on fumes ready to fill the tank with cheap diesel. On our most recent trip to Belgium, we filled up in the UK before we left. Personal preparation Having decided where you want to travel to, when you will go and how you will get your motorcaravan to the continent it is time to press the ‘buy’ button. But before you do, it is wise to check you have the right documentation in good order to leave the UK. Passports Whether flying abroad or travelling by sea, everyone travelling, including children, will need a passport to leave our island. Assuming you have a UK passport and are only visiting the EU, that document needs to have at least three months of validity remaining and be less than 10 years old at the time you plan to leave the EU, at the end of your trip. Check the passport expiry date of all people in your travel group. You do not want to be stopped at immigration. Generally speaking, you do not need a visa for a European holiday, but you can only visit Schengen countries for 90 days in each 180 days. Do not forget previous visits made to European destinations during the previous 180 days count toward those 90 days. Check https://www.gov.uk/ foreign-travel-advice for the latest information. 46 MOTOR CARAVANNER January 2024
Driving license Most UK drivers only need a UK photocard driving license to drive in Europe. Check with the embassy of the country you will be driving in, if in doubt, you have a non-mainland UK license or you are planning a long trip. In many countries you are required to actually have your driving license with you when driving. We have heard stories of drivers being fined for not carrying a license. Travel Insurance No one wants to experience a medical emergency when they are abroad, it could be a very expensive mistake not to be prepared. If you hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) it remains valid until the expiration date. This card has been replaced by the UK Global Health Card (GHIC). Not all state health care is free within the EU and repatriation costs are not covered. So, it is important to purchase travel insurance. Do not just select the cheapest available. Make sure it covers the activities you plan to undertake and be sure you have declared pre-existing medical conditions. Travel insurance is not just for medical emergencies, however. It also covers theft and cancellations for example. Many policies require you to have an EHIC or GHIC so do ensure everyone traveling holds one. www.gov.uk/global-health-insurancecard
Motorcaravan preparation When driving a motorcaravan to the EU you may need a new sticker for your car, even if your van's number plate says 'GB' on it. Vehicles driving from the UK to mainland Europe must now display a 'UK' sign on their car. Previously, campervans and motorhomes driven abroad had to display a number plate, sticker or sign with the letters 'GB', for Great Britain, but the rules changed in September 2021. If your number plate includes a UK identifier you won’t need this. Different countries have different rules on what you should carry aboard. These are in addition to the documents above such as passports, licenses, and vehicle documents. A first aid kit is one item you should have but most motorcaravans will already have this. But not many routinely carry the two warning triangles and a reflective jacket or waistcoat for everyone on board. It pays to check that what you carry complies with the laws of the countries you are likely to drive in or through. Also check your vehicle handbook to see if you will need to adjust your lights due to driving on the other side of the road. If your vehicle is over 3500kg you will need to fix blind spot or Angles Morts stickers when travel in or through France. Are you driving illegally?
When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!
When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up-to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these figures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg). This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.
Need to uprate to carry more payload?
If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models. Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.
Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?
SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg. For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free-to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload. Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.
For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

Adaptors Before you leave the shores of the UK, be sure to pack an assortment of adaptors to allow the easy filling of potable water. Continental Europe generally uses larger size taps than we do here. If you do forget to pack or buy some, a quick stop at a good hardware store on the other side of the channel will resolve the issue. Not quite as easy to find over there, are LPG gas adaptors that allow you to fill a van’s underslung tank with LPG. It is best to buy one in the UK before you travel. The good news is, however, LPG is so much easier to find on a filling station forecourt in Europe than it is here. Gas We do not use bottled gas for cooking, but from what we have learned from others, each country throughout Europe has its own supplier of gas bottles, each with its own adapter and regulator. Motorcaravanners we have met who regularly spend long periods of time abroad often have a different gas bottle for each country they visit. Campingaz is available throughout Europe, but it only comes in small bottles, which are not always cost effective. We recommend you keep a small portable gas stove as a backup in your van. Should your main supply of gas run out, you can use it to complete your cooking. It is also useful for cooking outside. Be sure to carry a spare bottle of gas. They never last as long as you think, and
On a short trip, we have found that the advice to buy a local sim may be cost effective for phone calls, but not for internet uses. Internet cafes have disappeared but there is often free wifi in restaurants and shopping malls.
annoyingly, always run out halfway through a cooking process! Mobile phone/internet Do not assume you will be able to use your mobile phone or any internet service in your mobile home while abroad without charge. Check your contract before you travel. Since the UK left the EU, many phone contracts no longer give free data roaming. If you can call and use the internet for free in Europe, be aware of the fair use and maximum GB of data per month allowance abroad that your provider allows. This is often less than your UK allowance even if you have an unlimited plan. When you are used to downloading freely and letting you phone, tablet or computer update at home it is easy to suddenly find all your allowance used up. Our granddaughter took just 3 days to exhaust our internet allowance in Belgium. No, she was not playing online games, or downloading films, she was doing her homework using an app! We recommend you turn off automatic updates and be careful before downloading or streaming.
Insurance and documentation Check your motorcaravan insurance covers the countries you plan to visit. Confirm the level of cover is sufficient and what documents you need to carry. You should also carry the original vehicle registration documents. Check your emergency breakdown insurance will cover you abroad. Carrying rear loads If you carry bicycles or anything else on the back of your motorcaravan, it must not extend width-wise beyond vehicle or obscure lights or number plate. You will also need to attach a large reflective red and white striped hazard sign. You may tow a trailer with a car on it in the EU. But you cannot tow a car without a trailer using the likes of an A frame that leaves wheels on the ground. Emission zones Low emission zones are common now in Europe. Be careful if you have an old motorhome that does not meet the standards. Food on board Now that the UK is no longer part of the EU, certain food items are no >> January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 49
IN FOCUS | EXPLORING EUROPE longer allowed to be brought in even for personal use. This includes meat, milk, or their products. Check https:// food.ec.europa.eu/animals/animalproducts-movements/personalimports_en for the latest information. The first stop for us when we arrive in Calais is always Carrefour, where we stock up our fridge and dry stores. Pet preparation So, you always take your pet with you in your motorcaravan. Don’t worry you can take him, her or them with you to Europe. But it has become a little more difficult. Advance preparation is necessary now we are out of the EU and sadly it is not cheap. First check your chosen ferry allows the carriage of pets and what rules apply. While all responsible owners will have already microchipped their pets not everyone vaccinates against rabies. You will need this done and you will need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) from an official veterinarian each time you leave the UK. Phone your vet well ahead of your planned departure to check the latest rules, get any inoculations required and book an appointment for the AHC. Do not wait til the last moment, even if your animals have had all their jabs, as the documents the vet must fill in are lengthy and complicated. Remember to check if extra time is needed at check in before you leave the UK and what rules apply when you make your return journey. Even though it is expensive, Tuvok, our cat, always travels with us.
Tips As travel writers, we tend to visit Europe frequently so have picked up a few handy tips. Entertainment Download films or TV shows to your tablet before you go. Most services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc are area locked and you will not be able to stream abroad. Backups Take a photograph of all your important documents: passports, insurance certificates, driving license, credit cards, travel tickets etc and store them in a folder in your mobile phone’s photo app. Also back them up to the cloud and share that link with those adults travelling with you. If the worst happens and documents are lost or stolen, you will have a backup and it will make replacing everything easier. We have even used a photograph of our passports to return home when ours were lost! European Accident Statement (EAS) While not a legal requirement we keep a printed copy of these free downloads in various languages in our campervan. We have never had to use them, touch wood! But they will be very helpful in the event of an accident abroad or even in the UK. https://cartraveldocs.com Beyond campsites We generally tour rather than stay

in one campsite and in Europe it is very easy to find safe and permitted overnight stopping places. Before our first trip to France, we were puzzled when fellow club members told us they stayed overnight in Aires. We thought Aire was the name for motorway service stations in Europe and we had been told horror stories of break-ins and theft. When we did some research, we learned Aire is French for resting place. There are Aires in many towns and villages in Europe. They are wonderful, cheap overnight stops, generally very safe and most have water and waste facilities. We carry Aire de Camping Car Guides published by Vicarious Media. They have titles covering the whole of Europe https://www.vicarious-shop. com/collections/motorhome-airesstopovers We are also members of France Passion, a book and app that lists places for campervans and motorhomes to stop overnight, free of charge. Generally speaking, the hosts are farmers and vineyards who hope that you will buy their produce, but there is no obligation to do so. We adore the concept and have enjoyed overnight stays in olive groves, apple orchards and vineyards. We have met some wonderful hosts and have learned how to milk goats and make cheese along the way. We even stayed overnight on a snail farm!

TOP 10 TIPS
FOR WINTER MAINTENANCE Use your winter downtime to good advantage. Consider what needs to be done now the days are shorter so that when the summertime comes around again you can hit the road well prepared.

anuary and February are some of the coldest months of the year. It is a time when many of us just want to stay at home. Some have taken their vans to warmer spots and are soaking up some winter sunshine on the Costa Fortune! Brave-hearted motor caravanners, us included, are still out on the highways and byways of Great Britain enjoying everything this island has to offer. But whether you are hibernating, planning another adventure, or even out travelling in your motorcaravan, you will still need to give your vehicle some TLC. When your campervan or motorcaravan is parked up and not in use, winter is the perfect time to do some maintenance. Here are 10 of our top tips detailing things we always do, or at least, try to!
traffic. But even so, storing it in the cold and wet is not ideal. If you are lucky enough to have power, plug your van into electricity. Install a black heater on a timer and set it to come on when the temperature falls below 5oC. We find this is the perfect way to keep out cold and reduce condensation, the biggest source of van interior problems. If electricity is not an option, consider firing up your gas or diesel central heating system regularly. Go and sit in your van for a couple of hours and read a book, watch a movie, or do some office work. Turning on the van's heating system is good for it, and the heat it generates lets everything warm up. Vans without heating should have their fresh and grey water tanks

drained. Before parking up for the winter, increase tyre pressures by 10psi above the normal, because tyres lose pressure over time. We take the weight off Voyager’s tyres when we are not using her for a long period by jacking her up on the self-levelling system. If you have not got those, try moving your van a little every two to three weeks, to make sure tyres do not develop flat spots. Release the handbrake to prevent it from freezing. If you are parked on a slope, we also suggest you engage a gear or place chocks in front of or behind the wheels. You don’t want your pride and joy to roll downhill!
2
Go away Unless you have SORN your van, try and use it, even if just for a day. Love your campervan and it will love you back! During winter, carparks at beauty spots are seldom full, so why not take some soup, pack a crusty loaf and hunk of cheese and sit inside your van with the heating turned up and enjoy the views. Get bundled up for the weather and go for a bracing walk. Drive to the seaside, park up in a forest >>

We tend to leave the exterior, on the basis that it will only get dirty again before we want to use the van, but we always ensure our solar panels are clean so that our habitation batteries never run flat. Because Voyager is never still for very long, we leave our fridge functioning, but if you are not
going anywhere, our advice is to take out any food or drink, switch it off, clean it, and leave it with the door slightly ajar.
4
Get a habitation service Between October and May is the perfect time to get a habitation check. But remember lots of other motorcaravan owners have had the same thought, so book a service well in advance! You could take the van to a recognised service centre or do as we do and employ a mobile team who come to you. Some insurance companies insist on habitation checks being completed annually and if yours is one of those, then make sure your engineer completes an official check list and signs a certificate that shows your van is safe.
your report from the habitation check engineer, you will be in a good position to know what needs to be done when it comes to repairing, replacing, or renewing items. Batteries, vehicle covers, windscreen covers, and soft furnishings should all be inspected. Do this early on in your down season and you will have everything in good order by the time you next want to use your van. Check tyres, windscreen wipers and make sure the anti-freeze is the correct strength. Fill the fuel tank at the end of the summer season if you are not going to use it over winter and do exactly the opposite with the screen wash bottle. If that freezes in the depths of winter, you will not be a happy camper when it thaws out.
6
Offload There is a tendency among us all to hoard stuff in our vans just in case...No, we are not immune to this, but we have a rule, and we try to stick to it. We carefully go through each locker, one by one and working together (this is important) we ask each other, “Have you used this in >>
5
Inspect, repair, replace or renew Once you have completed the deep cleaning process, and received January 2024 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57
IN FOCUS | WINTER MAINTENANCE the last 12 months?” If not used in the last year, we ask ourselves, do we really need it on board? We then put any discarded items into a pile and gauge how much space we have reclaimed. And, if we are feeling devilish, we even weigh the stuff so we can see how much we have improved our payload by.
7
Make an inventory Why bother to make an inventory you ask? We do so for peace of mind. If the very worst were to happen, and we had to claim against our insurance for total loss fire or theft, we would know what was missing. Why do we do this in winter? Simple really, we never have time in the summer, we are having too much fun! Besides which, we have read the tip above, and removed stuff, and that means our inventory needs updating!
8
Food It does not matter how it is packaged, tins, jars and sachets of food do go bad. We love to cook on board our campervan and as a result, we have store cupboards full of herbs, spices and other culinary essentials. We take it all off the van, check the dates on the packet, and inspect it carefully. Sometimes we return it to the store cupboard, other times we stock rotate it putting products into the larder at home. Anything we take off, we add to the shopping list to replace. It is a good idea to do same with the first aid kit and any medications you carry.
"FILL THE FUEL TANK AT THE END OF THE SUMMER SEASON IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO USE IT OVER WINTER AND DO EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE WITH THE SCREEN WASH BOTTLE.
9
Plan the next adventure We love pre-trip preparation almost as much as the trip itself. In our experience, the more research you do first, the better the trip ultimately is. And winter is a good time to do that research. Book your away-time to fit with your own availability from work and responsibility. Summertime campsites and ferry schedules can get fully booked very quickly. If you are planning a trip across the water, winter months are the best time to
book! Not only to secure the best prices, but also to ensure you get to travel when you want to. The same applies to summer holiday campsites and campsites near shows or events. Book early, because the nearer it gets to showtime the harder it is to find the space.
10
Dream We have no idea if you do the same, but we often play the what-if game. What-if you won the lottery? What-if an unknown, rich relative left you a fortune? Whatif you could make changes to your van, what would you do? What-if you had so much money you could go out there and buy a new van? Of course, it is only a game and sitting round a roaring fire, tucked up from winter storms and pelting rain, is the perfect time to play it. We know what we would do! Four-wheel drive and an extra half metre in overall length just for starters! But other than that, we would not change a great deal. We are very happy with our van and, so long as we maintain it along the lines we have outlined above she should be very happy with us. Finally We are by no means experts and have learned most of what we know the hard way! If you have any sneaky tips or jolly good ideas to pass on to fellow club members do. Please, drop us a line and let us know what you do in the way of winter maintenance.
