hank you to all the members who have responded to the questionnaire about whether family members with caravans should be allowed to join our Club as new members. After a few initial hiccups, we have received a high number of replies, either by post or email. We’d like to thank Peter Heale for facilitating the electronic response and Ron and Julie in Head Office for gathering in the written responses. A small team of us has begun to count the votes. Every member was entitled to a vote, so where joint members have both signed the reply, please be assured that both votes will count. Many members that replied have taken time to add their thoughts and the team are also
reading through all the comments – though as I am writing this in the middle of April, there could still be some replies to come. All the comments will be collated; but already we can see the main arguments emerging, both for and against. We are truly grateful to everyone for taking the time to reply, it is giving us a very clear picture of your views on this matter. As Kate has written in her Chat, this will be discussed at our next Council of Management meeting and brought to you at the AGM in June. For those of you unable to attend the AGM, we will be reporting back in the magazine later this year. Sue Pilkiw Chair of Membership Services

OBITUARY It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Tommy McCraw on the 21 February. Tommy was a member of the Scottish Group since 2010 and served on the committee. Just last year I spoke to him at our meet in Aberlady. He parked his van there and was an assistant warden to the site owner Andrew. He will be fondly missed. Our condolences go out to his family. CITY OF DERRY RUGBY CLUB 29 APRIL – 1 MAY Once again we are facing a problem with a venue. The rugby club at Londonderry which we had intended to use the weekend 29th April to 1st May for our rally has now had to be cancelled due to the rugby team having been successful in reaching the final in a competition. This has resulted in the club requiring parking spaces and also the club house on the Saturday afternoon and evening where they are expecting up to 200 in attendance. This would limit the running of our rally.

Macmillan Cancer Fund raffles
Craft crew 'puts a smile on your face' From the start of lockdown in March 2020, to the present day, a few of our members in the Lancashire group have been doing crafts in their own homes, and keeping in touch via messenger. In that time we have created many works of art, some using recycled materials, which were recently displayed in an exhibition during the Hoghton Village Hall meet in March. It has been a constant learning curve for us all, learning from each other as well as YouTube videos and giving us the encouragement and confidence to progress with even more art challenges! VW debuts their all-electric vans Michael Howorth reports
V
olkswagen has finally unveiled the ID Buzz, their all-electric vans of the nearfuture. Rumours of an all electric Campervan from Volkswagen first began to circulate five years ago. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation firmed up when images were released by the company. Now one of the most anticipated vehicles ever, has finally made its debut and it could become a game changer for the world of campervans. Those images first seen two years ago showed Volkswagen where nostalgically intent on going back to the future by reverting to the iconic breadbox styling of the original VW T1. The dual-tone paint scheme, V-angled face, short front and rear
overhangs, along with a generous wraparound glasshouse are all there. All that seems to be missing is the surfer dude hugging his board! The other missing element is the
noisy engine! The Volkswagen Buzz has done away with that and now a high-voltage 12-module lithium-ion battery pack with 82 kWh of gross energy does the grunting. We have no idea yet on price nor indeed about range but what we do know is that the 150kW motor will drive the rear axle and that the speed will be electronically limited to a maximum of 90mph. While Volkswagen has confirmed plans for an ID. California electric camper van, it has not announced a launch timescale. But now that the specs for the basic cargo version have been confirmed we can expect to see converters coming up with their own all electric versions in the very near future. Expect the first camper renderings to start showing up in the next few weeks!

BOOKS
Sherlock Holmes returns What has been a constant over the Covid years is our love of books and in particular crime books. When we think of crime, Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most fascinating and enduring characters in British history and its author Arthur Conan Doyle one of the most famous writers. Mike Bryan, Director of publishers Baker Street Press, takes up the story: "There has always been a high level of interest in the ‘consulting detective’ and we felt the time was right to launch the ‘Sherlock Holmes Deluxe Classics Series'. "This collection of nine hardback
books is a retro-inspired full set of the wonderful tales of Holmes at work, featuring cover illustrations from editions of the 1920’s. "Originally serialised in newspapers and magazines in the late nineteenth century, Conan Doyle’s famous collection of detective stories transport the reader back to Holmes’s bustling
Victorian London, the misty moors of Dartmoor, the dizzying heights of the Reichenbach Falls and the cosy living room of 221B Baker Street." Launched by Baker Street publishers, the complete ‘Sherlock Holmes Deluxe Classics’ collection of nine books is available from Waterstones and all good bookshops, or buy direct at www. ccsbooks.co.uk/product-category/ baker-street-classics-sherlockholmes/

NEC SHOW REPORT
A warm welcome awaited PART 2
Kavanagh Deville presents part two of his report on the reprisal of the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show, held recently at the NEC, Birmingham… 3 2
SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND?
How else could one kick-off a report which opens with this striking Dirty Weekender bespoke conversion on the MAN TGE LWB high-top [1&2]? There’s not much point in quoting the cost because this is a customer’s own vehicle, designed and built to order…as are many of their motorcaravans. We first appreciated Worcester-based Dirty Weekender a while ago when their conversions were almost exclusively on the ubiquitous VW Transporter. Now they are developing their offer on larger base vehicles. That said, if you are looking for a low impact weekender/festival conversion for a compact tin-top, have a close dekko at their Egoe Nest Box set-up. the scene to something from the longest established volume converter in Blighty…the Symbol Plus [3] from Auto-Sleepers. We’ll start outside as its white hue is noteworthy. White ones were previously only available from Marquis as part of their extensive range of ‘dealer specials’. Now

they can be ordered from any A-S dealer. Symbol Plus is – as the name suggests – a stretched version of the popular 5.45m/17’ 10.75” Symbol. Crucially though, Symbol Plus is still in the highly manoeuvrable sub-six metre class, with the extra internal volume transforming the conversion
[4&5]. Default choice of underpinnings is the Peugeot Boxer, though this show model is on Fiat Ducato Automatic and is fully-loaded with Premium, Winter and Enhancement Packs. Price as exhibited: £73,995. Next is another Plus model, only this time it is ‘+’ and not ‘Plus’. >> MAY 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 21

Bilbo’s VW Transporter-based Nexa+ [6&7] now benefits from the ‘addition’ of a fitted swivelbowl cassette loo…photographed ‘deployed’. Don’t forget that Nexa is built on the well-equipped Kombi, rather than on the bog-standard
van. Also, its occupants can sleep in two easily-accessed single beds. Nexa+ is also available with a side-hinged lowline elevatingroof for urban warriors. Length: 5.304m/17’ 5”. Four travel seats. Price: As displayed (148bhp DSG

Auto): £67,370. Devon’s Colorado [8-10] is an interesting geographical regional combo, especially as Devon Conversions has (for decades) been based in Co. Durham. Colorado is a mighty fine forward lounge conversion. Pictured is the ‘settee version’ (three travel seats). Also available is a variant with an extra travel seat replacing the offside settee. One might be forgiven for thinking this is a LWB or XL version of the Ducato, but it ain’t. Stretching the tape to just 5.413m/17’ 9.25”, it’s a marvel of miniaturisation. Price: £58,995 OTR, but and it’s a big ‘but’, Devon has acquired a number of brand new pre-reg vans, available from £55,450. Crackin’ VFM! Globecar’s Roadscout Elegance [11] is of a similar length to the Colorado, though that’s where the similarity ends because the internal layout is very different. DEVILLE’S REAL DEAL Following-on from last month’s VFM pick of the bunch, this time it’s the 5.99m/19’ 8” Rimor Horus 38 exhibited by Motorhomes and Caravans Ltd of Hull (www.mandcltd.com) who are the main agents. Rimor‘s factory is near Siena in Italy. Show price including RHD and with the conversion handed for the UK, 140bhp engine, alloys, Android Apple Carplay infotainment, cab blinds, solar panel, Category 1 alarm, oven and flyscreen door: £58,995? Nope. It is an extremely slim £48,995 OTR. (Four travel seats, three sleeping berths). 24 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022
[13&14] shows a ‘rebel with a cause’. (Apologies to one of the greatest ‘moody mumblers’, James Dean). RP Motorhomes major on a ‘no-compromise’ build generally, but in particular with its ‘expedition’ vehicles, of which this Rebellion 2 is one. Built upon the on-demand AWD (All Wheel Drive)
Mercedes Sprinter chassis, this is a perfect choice for exciting off-road and off-grid motorcaravanning adventures. Price from: £136,995, as exhibited: £143,989. Note that demand is so high for these, that all the build-slots for 2022 have already gone. >>

Moto Trek is probably better known among members for its coachbuilts with slide-outs, but is just as adept at PVC’s. The Terrain [15&16] is a rear transverse bed two-berth like so many others, but as always ‘the devil is in the detail’ and this is where Moto Trek has majored, just look at how welldeveloped the underbed storage is [17] and at the white detailing of the ‘All Terrain’ tyres. Pictured example is on the Pug (Peugeot). Subjectively, the author feels that the ‘Boxer beat’ is more refined than the ‘Ducato bark’, but if you prefer a Citroën or Fiat base, the choice is yours. Length: 6.36m/20’ 10.5” Price: From £59,995, but with full-length roofrack and ladder, nudge bar and LED light bar, the price increases to £61,495. >> 26 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022
Now for something a little different. Both of the next brace featured have extra ‘up-top’. Adria’s Twin Sports [18-20] adds a rear-hinged elevating-roof, facilitating an upper bedroom. Dreamer’s Living Van [21&22] utilises the Ducato’s extra-hightop to allow a forward drop-down double-bed and twin seating areas. Of equal importance to prospective 21

purchasers is the Adria’s flexible multi-use layout, and the Dreamer’s palatial triple-aspect rear lounge. Spec check: Both are 6.36m/20’ 10.5” long. Adria Twin Sports 640SG: from £65,495; as exhibited: £71,550. Huge payload – 1,070kg – but Group C1 driving licence required. Dreamer Living Van: from £58,800; as exhibited: £68,954. MORE MAN CAVES FOR ALL
The use of the MAN TGE base vehicle (VW Crafter doppelgänger) is increasing among converters. Essentially, it is the same at the Crafter, built at the same (Polish) factory and is available in front wheel drive, single/twin rear wheel drive and all wheel drive. However, we assume that a major plus is that the MAN service network has technicians that are used to working on heavy and big commercial vehicles and that their workshops can accommodate the largest motorhome, which is not always the case with VW agents. First to catch our eye in this section is the snappily-named (not!) Tribal Special Edition of the Knaus Van TI Plus Platinum Selection [23&24]. It is what ‘Saloon Bar Sages’ refer to as a ‘stealth vehicle’, though really that is only down to the matt black paint finish, and not because it will slip-under the radar! The basic 6.99m/22’ 11.25” Van TI is a two-berth, but with four-travelling seats and will set you back £74,840. Upgrading the drive-train to 177bhp AWD, the chassis to 3,860kg, the heating system and so on, adds another £4,368. So far…so good. However, the (global explorer) Tribal Limited Edition Pack will set you back a

further (not-insignificant) £32,789. Gulp! That said, the author has carefully examined and evaluated the pack’s contents and concluded that the benefits are worth the extra, providing it really is going to be used extensively off-road, or on
unmade roads. Price as exhibited: £112,000. ‘Last MAN standing’ (sorry!) is the LWB (6.8m/22’ 3.75”) Trek [25-28] by Three Bridge Campers of Milton Keynes. ‘Sophisticated elegance’ was our verdict. Note the sculptured and ergonomicallycorrect (adjustable) travel seats and the contemporary high-gloss radiused cabinetwork. Classy carriage, and built to order, thus the cost is dependent on length of base vehicle and spec. Guide price for next build slots: £105,000£135,000

23 vans came to Norton Village Hall which was a new venue for us. The hall is very good with a kitchen to die for but unfortunately, there is not a large car park which restricted the number of vans that could attend. On Friday evening there was the usual game of Bingo profitable for the Dobbs Thackers and one or two others. We were entertained by Pat and Dave Hills singing to us whilst Raffle tickets were being sold etc. On Saturday morning one or two went up to the local pub, just 50 yards up the road for breakfast, while others actually found a bus to Bury St. Edmunds that hadn’t been attacked by the local Apaches. The service in was erratic and only three buses a day. However, it was a pleasant village to stroll around and many landed up in the “Norton Dog” yet again. On Saturday evening, we were in the hall for Brian and Jenny Wood’s Irish Stew with soda bread. There was also a sweet with cream or custard. They did well and all enjoyed the meal. This was followed by the Anglia Irish Derby put on with a large course laid out on the floor on wallpaper which Keith had marked up. Carol worked out the odds and every race was won by the Green horse called Paddy. Well, what else would you have called a green horse in an Irish Derby? It was a great deal of fun, and it was enjoyed by all, especially those who backed Paddy! We then had background music by Paul Cook when we drew the raffle and dodgy dip since the hall was needed by 12 on Sunday morning. Sunday was tea, coffee and thanks by the Chairman for a good weekend. Thanks are due to Brian and Jenny for the meal, Keith for making the Derby course up, the jockeys for moving the horses and all who helped in any way. Scribe Derek

AVON Holiday Resort Unity, Brean Sands Rally: 17-20 March 2022: Thanks go to our hosts Sue, Pete, John and Shirley, who welcomed 31 vans in total including 21 from the Avon group. The weather was sunny and breezy but did stay dry throughout the rally. Over the three days, people ventured to Burnham on sea or Weston-super-Mare on the bus from the entrance to the site. Others walked along the vast expanse of Brean and Berrow sands. For most of our group, it was their first get-away of the year and it was so nice to catch up for a chat and perhaps a drink or two. During Sunday’s coffee morning, Sue welcomed the new and first-time members to Avon group and passed on the attendance numbers and info for forthcoming rallies. Thanks to Marilyn who sold tickets for the raffle and hosted the draw. In the Tavern, on site, they cooked a delicious Sunday carvery which some of us stayed on for, before a pleasant drive home in the sunshine. Take care, Allan. CHILTERN Our first rally of 2022 was held at St. Peter’s School, Old Windsor. We had 16 vans, six of them visitors from other groups. This is a lovely venue with easy access into Windsor and into the Great Park. On the Friday evening, we met in the Hall armed with our drinks and nibbles and were entertained by Paul’s ‘Royalty-Related Quiz’. During Saturday, most members took the opportunity to go into Windsor - either by bus, taxi or on foot via the long walk in the park. Several had booked tickets to visit the castle, which I understand was very interesting. In the evening, our Stewards, Angela and Paul and their little helpers, put our crafting skills to the test! We were given various materials and were tasked with making something associated with royalty. Most members made either a crown or coach and there were some spectacular offerings. Sunday morning, we had our Chairman’s Chat and the raffle. Many thanks to the Stewards for a very enjoyable weekend. Upcoming rallies: 29 April-3 May, Hoar Park Farm, Ansley, Nuneaton, CV10 0QU. 12-16 May, St Peter’s Campsite, North Moreton, OX11 9AS. 20-23 May, White Mark Farm, Watlington, OX49 5AF. 2-5 June, Hurst Community College, Baughurst, RG26 5NL (our 60th Anniversary Celebration). 24-27 June, Padworth Village Hall, Padworth, RG7 4HY.

It will now be held earlier in the year from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June, 2022 and NOT July 8-10 as listed in our rally booklet. Due to the space available to us, this rally in June is now bookable. Have you booked for the National Rally at Stafford? Closing date for booking is Thursday 26 May, 2022. You can order your t-shirts at the same time. Sizes are given in the April magazine on page 16. If you’re unable to book, you can still come along and pay at the gate – though we can’t guarantee that you’ll be parked with East Midlands, you will be on-site and still able to join us for all the entertainment. Are you going to enter the Homecraft Competition? The details are in your 2022 Handbook on pages 73-76. Don’t forget the closing date for entries is May 10. Champa is our Homecraft co-ordinator and is happy to
answer any questions you may have. Sue. On a bright and windy Thursday afternoon, we welcomed 33 vans to our yearly Country and Western weekend at Ingoldmells. There were two first-time East Midland vans, and we had a visit from an Anglia van who had not been on an East Midland Rally before who were welcomed by the stewards Brian, Ian, Jean and Yvonne. On Thursday evening, the Chairperson opened the rally, and we played our usual games of bingo followed by a table quiz. Some of the members joined in and played the dice game which was won by Mandy who donated her winnings to our charity of the year. Well done, Mandy! On Friday morning, we had coffee and cakes. Friday evening, we all got into our fancy dress (leaving our guns at the door) ready to be entertained by Darren Busby. What a brilliant night was had by all, jiving and line dancing the night away. Saturday some members went into “Skeg Vegas” and some just walked to see the sea. Saturday evening was St. Patrick’s night. Fancy dress was worn by some members. A quiz relating to St. Patrick was won by Steve and then a table quiz was won by Val’s table followed by a karaoke. Thanks to the brilliant singers who took part. On Sunday morning, our Chairperson Anne closed the rally and said she hoped we had all had a good time and hoped we had a safe journey home. Yvonne. The sun shone for the whole weekend at Seagrave. The stewards welcomed 14 vans; one was a first-time East Midlands, and one was from Yorkshire Group. Friday evening, we met in the hall played our usual game of bingo and chatted. We were then entertained by Rob and Eddie and an impromptu karaoke session. Saturday was again a beautiful sunny day and after coffee morning members went off to spend time in Loughborough or Leicester whilst others decided to walk round the village then spend some time in the sun. Saturday evening saw members coming to the hall in all kinds of headwear for ‘Wear a Hat Day’. A buffet of cheeses and various accompaniments had been prepared and laid out by the stewards who served members with wine which was very generously donated by Nancy and Tony. This was followed by a Mother’s Day quiz and a game of Scattergories and much laughter. After Sunday morning coffee, our Treasurer Joyce thanked the stewards and the members for coming and joining in. While it was a relatively small rally, everyone had a great weekend. Thanks once again to Nancy and Tony for the wine. Yvonne. Upcoming rallies: 29 April-2 May, Anglia invite to Sheringham High School, Sheringham, NR26 8ND. 13-15 May, Tattershall Village Hall, Lodge Road, Tattershall, Lincoln, LN4 4LL. 27-31 May, Cattle Market, Salford Road, Melton Mowbray, Leics, LE13 1JY. 9-14 June, National Rally, Stafford Showground, Weston Road, Stafford, ST18 0BD. 24-28 June, Cromford RFU, Cromford Meadows, Derbyshire, DE4 3RQ. >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 33
GROUP NEWS EAST WESSEX Ten vans including visitors from West Wessex and Sussex came to our rally at Easebourne. On Friday, several ladies offered to help with enveloping and addressing the group's rally programme and a production line was soon in full swing; much to Diane's delight. Saturday was a cold day and we appreciated the warm hall. Following afternoon tea, we had a demonstration of CPR and how to use a defibrillator which more venues have these days. Everyone agreed that this excellent talk was a very worthwhile exercise and made us feel more confident if ever called upon to use it. In the evening, Lynn compered ‘Play Your Cards Right’, the rules of which completely baffled some of us, but good fun all the same. Bean bag boules and a raffle rounded off the evening. The attraction of a new venue at Weeke in Winchester brought 19 vans to our next rally including new East Wessex members Hilary and Geoffrey and five visitors from West Wessex, Chiltern and Sussex groups. What a gem this site is with a cluster of cafes, supermarkets, shops and a park virtually on the doorstep and a bus stop just around the corner. Those who sampled the local Chinese restaurant all said how good the food was, and the discount negotiated by Tony made it even better. The late risers had a rude awakening on Saturday morning as resurfacing outside the school began with a vengeance on the dot of 8am. Fortunately, a cooked breakfast down the road beckoned and others took the bus into town, and all was soon quiet again. The unusually warm sunshine led to no one being in a hurry to return for afternoon tea which was almost deserted. The relaxed theme continued into the evening as members brought out games from their vans to amuse themselves. Even the local Facebook group was happy once they realised, we were not trespassing, but actually paying into school funds. A good PR win for us. Upcoming TCs: Please let the host know if you're intending to come so we can plan how to park the vans. The rally page on our website www.eastwessex.uk has driving directions. 29 April-3 May, Winchester Rugby Club, Russell Road, Winchester, SO23 7EF, DO NOT USE POSTCODE TO SITE, four-night bank holiday field rally with pods, outdoor games, quiz, easy walk to town, Wetherspoons, cost £14 pupn, £13 pupn singles, arrivals after 1pm. ESSEX We arrived at Chelmer Valley High School which is a favourite for Essex on Friday night after a very good journey, considering it was Friday. We had a large turnout for this rally which was good. The parking was done very quickly and efficiently by members of the committee and with the help of Malcolm. It was over to the hall to pay your dues and for a full evening with bingo and again, I was not lucky enough to win a very good amount of money. Raffle tickets were sold earlier, and the raffle was drawn with numerous amounts of prizes. We were honoured this weekend with two members of COMMS namely Keith Poole, who is also Anglia Chairman and Maurice Brooks. Thank you both for coming. We had members from Anglia, Kent, Sussex, and Chiltern again thank you for coming hope you all enjoyed the weekend. Lastly, we had three new members attend their first rally, sorry I forgot to take down all your names, but the Essex Group hope you all enjoyed the weekend, and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Saturday saw members off to the local town for some retail therapy or off to one of the local pubs for a spot of lunch. It was a lovely day and we thought spring is on its way. In the evening it was over to the hall again for our entertainment which was Clayton. He was very good and soon had Essex members up dancing. There was also a very big surprise for Chrissy whose 70th birthday is this month. Her friends and family arranged for beer, wine, food, and a large cake. To say she was surprised is an understatement especially as some of her family was also there. Thank you to John, Chrissy's husband for all his generosity, you can relax now. It was a great evening and Clayton certainly entertained everyone especially dancing with the birthday girl. After an excellent evening it was off to the motorhome. Sunday was a bit overcast, and we were off to the hall for tea or coffee and biscuits and of course the Chairman's Waffle. After goodbyes it was off home. John Not a good start to the week: Had a Zoom meeting with all Group Chairs and unfortunately got logged out halfway through. Then on the Wednesday, had sore throat and cough, so did a Covid test which came up positive, fully vaccinated with a booster, always wear a mask, but still caught it. Therefore, had to miss this rally. Thanks Chris/John for write up. Yes, the sun came out for members as we met up Friday at the Mayflower school, Billericay. We met in the hall at 7pm for a meet and greet, Bingo and our fabulous raffle, also throw a £1 coin at a bottle of Whisky £30 was collected for Essex Air Ambulance. Thank you. The winner of the bottle of whisky was Steve Lambell. Saturday evening started at 7pm and was hosted by Nick, Pauline, John, Chrisy, Peter and Tina. Everyone joined into a ‘Mr and Mrs Challenge’ with a difference. Not one question, but all funny little games. Played against a different husband or wife. Sewing on buttons pumping
GROUP NEWS up a bike inner tube, wiring a plug, doing a jigsaw, and sucking Maltesers with a straw and lots more. Well done ladies who won the evening, and as it was Mother's Day Sunday, our Club gave all the ladies a flowering pot plant. And Pete the hat finished the evening off with playing some great tunes. On Sunday morning, we met out in the playground to say our goodbyes. KENT 1-3 April, Oasis Academy, Sheerness: Well after a week of beautiful temperatures and when we thought Summer had arrived, along came the reminder that it was still only early April and winter is far from over. Through the cold wind and snow showers, we drove, and all arrived in sunny and windy Sheerness, but it remained amazingly dry for the Eighties weekend. Twelve Kent vans. Excellent quiz by Murray brought back a lot of memories from the 1980’s. Thank you to the Hosts, Sheena, Ty, Liz and Murray for the great music, Raffle. The committee were very disappointed but had no choice in cancelling the Overshore rally. Please help by stepping up and hosting a rally, the Rally Officer is working incredibly hard to find venues. It was also suggested that perhaps a member or two would like to sit in and join the committee meetings for an insight to our roles. One member found this very useful this weekend and also offered some useful suggestions. Welcome to two new members Julie and William, we look forward to meeting you in due course. LANCASHIRE The first t/c in March was at Park High School, Colne. The weather was dry, and we had lovely clear views over to Pendle Hill and the surrounding countryside. Our Chairman, Don, opened the evening to remind us of the domestics and welcomed 24 vans which included three from N.W. Mids and N.Wales, one from East Mids and the rest from Lancashire. New members Sharon and Darrell Appleby were introduced and welcomed. Dean gave us music all evening, but people were content to chat. Allan called the bingo and Mags gave us an easy quiz. It caused much banter but our team, which included the new members, were eventually given the prize, chocolates! Saturday dawned cold and sunny. Val did a craft session for us Crafty Crew members and we learned to do Iris Folding Cards. They make lovely decoration for greetings cards or boxes. Being such a lovely afternoon, many walked down into the town to shop till they dropped while others walked to the pub for a sizzler meal. The evening progressed much like Friday but was interrupted by Allan and Brian presenting ‘Play Your Cards Right’ with a very new Dolly Dealer, Sharon, who took no nonsense from the pair and soon had the measure of them! The night continued with a couple of dances and ended with Best Of Friends. Sunday Coffee Morning was where the raffle was drawn and Bonus Ball winners given their dues. Then Don wished us a safe journey home and thanked all who had helped. Our second t/c was at Hoghton Village Hall, our Chairman, Don was supposed to be one of the hosts for this t/c but his motorhome developed brake problems. He visited and left us with a special competition and other ideas plus sunshine warm enough to sit outside. Mel opened the evening welcoming 22 Lancashire vans and reminded us of the domestics. We were also visited both evenings by Jack (President) and Marie who live locally. The evening was mainly our usual format with bingo, line >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 35

NENE VALLEY There are two rallies to report on this month. We had a very enjoyable rally at Geddington Youth Club. There were 12 motorhomes including one from S W Wales and two from Anglia. Everyone managed to avoid the ford and arrived safely. We had the use of the Youth Club Hall for the duration of the rally and this included use of the pool table, ping pong and the table-top football. We were lucky with the weather, as it was warm enough to sit outside in the sun. On Friday evening, quiz sheets of anagrams of the names of British Prime Ministers and American Presidents were handed out to be completed at leisure. In the evenings, we had a Trivia Quiz. We played the dice game and we had several games of Card Bingo. Both nights still left plenty of time for chatting with old and new friends. On Saturday, several members ventured into Kettering whilst others stayed in Geddington, an old village with two pubs and an Eleanor cross (I’m not sure which got the most attention!) On Sunday, we had the coffee morning, and our rally co-ordinator thanked us for being hosts. Jane gave out result of the weekend dip (not going say who won) also the answers to the quiz were given by me, Denis gave information about forthcoming rallies. Margaret and John thank you for attending their first t/c stewarding. Following on from Geddington, we had the previously cancelled meet at Cardington. We didn’t have many turn out - eight vans in total, but what a great weekend we had. Two vans from Anglia, two from Chiltern, one from Essex and the other three from Nene Valley. The sun came out and stayed for the time we were on the rally field, we sat around chatting until we opened up the hall for 18:30pm. Jane gave us a quiz that really got the grey matter going with a TV soap quiz, not many points given for that one! The quiz about Britain was better with a good number being answered. The winning team was Nene Valley with help from Essex. On Saturday, we had the coffee morning outside in the lovely sunshine talking about the places to see/visit. We said that there was a game of smite being played at 15:30pm if anyone would like to take part, most did. The winner of the smite game was Terry from Anglia. A few caught the bus into Bedford and had a walk along the river. The weather had changed Sunday morning, but we had already made up our minds to leave early as it was Mother’s Day. Jane and Denis thanked all for supporting us and hope you enjoyed our company. EXCITING NEW RALLY (15 van limit): Denis has managed to secure the following rally: 13-15 May Quorn Station on the Great Central Railway, LE12 8AG. NORTHERN COUNTIES Hi everyone. We had a rally at Leyburn Auction Mart, a first for us in a long time. It’s a short stroll to the Main Street which is lined with pretty shops, pubs and coffee shops, which a lot of our members enjoyed. The market was on Friday we also rented a room on site. The caterer Claire supplied us with a very enjoyable meal of curry, rice, chips and naan bread and homemade steak, pie and vegetables. John Cottrell entrained with a quiz. Our next rally was at the beautiful town of Amble in Northumberland which has a stunning harbour. The weather was exceptionally kind to us. On Saturday morning, we enjoyed a car boot sale. Sunday, there was a market which sold a variation of food, clothing hardware etc. A few of us enjoyed fish and chips on the beach. We also hired the local church hall on Friday and Saturday night for a get together for bingo games and raffles. We all had a fantastic time. A lot of our members look forward to spending time together in the gorgeous town of Amble. Nora Upcoming rallies: 8-11 April Stokesley Show Field. Follow on rallies to Ambleside Rugby Club 29 March-4 April. 4-8 May Braithwaite Memorial Hall. 8-13 May Spital Farm, Kendal. All our rallies are on the club website.
NORTHERN IRELAND Sperrin Integrated College Magherafelt Rally: 11-13 March, 2022: This was to be a Saint Patrick’s Day themed rally and, as is well documented, Saint Patrick spent time tending sheep on the Sperrin’s so where better place to hold this rally than Sperrin Integrated School. Our Rally Officer never misses a beat. Good one Selma. 42 vans arrived on Friday evening and another one on Saturday morning, total 43 vans. We were greeted by our hosts Irene and Florence very resplendent in their green outfits in keeping with the occasion who together with our welcome sheets gave everyone very beautiful, knitted coasters, complete with shamrocks of course. A big effort Irene and Mary. Robbie and Joe parked everyone up. The Cavalry were called upon and soon had the hall furnished for the evening and at 7:30pm. Hayley and Brian provided a tutorial in the art of dancing which was well attended and proved to be both
entertaining and informative. (The evidence of this was clearly apparent on Saturday night). Friday continued with a few drinks, a bit of craic, banter and a generally setting the world to rights. Games were played, including bingo all adding up to a full and enjoyable evening. Magherafelt is a fairly large, bustling, market town, with loads of trendy shops, bars and restaurants, giving a wide variety to the many members wishing to walk into town. Now there was a very special treat in store for the ladies (not that any of them really needed it) as Alex Mellon demonstrated and assisted in the preparation and application of a range of beauty products. (Enda you are way out of your depth here. Stop whilst ahead). In any case, the ladies loved it. Please come back Alex. The Saturday night dance in a nice warm hall, music by Dave Kane, dancers fresh from their tutorial with Hayley and Brian, the ladies aglow thanks to Alex. Wow, you reap what you sow, very well done to our committee. Could I at this point welcome new members Albert and Oliva Everett, now I am a little confused, did they learn to jive like professionals before meeting Hayley and Brian or after? In any case, they were brilliant and welcome to the club. The ballot was held, plenty of prizes, thanks to all who donated. Sunday Coffee Morning: Our Chairman Joe addressed the floor and much to our shame had the unpleasant task of remonstrating that unknown few who clearly don't read the rules in the Handbook. Enough said on this matter. Number plate draw. David McFadden and Liz McKenna (This woman must have a direct line to the Blarney Stone). Quiz. This one was somewhat different to the usual being impossible to either know nor Google, so well done Robert and Joy Coulter for coming the closest. It was fabulous to see Roy Smith back behind the camera and the results can be seen in Gallery. Mobile phone cameras are great but Roy's camera and expertise are hard to beat, thanks Roy. Those green shoots of normality I spoke of in an earlier report have definitely grown and matured into strong young stalks and are looking great. Enda and Flo. Cookstown rally report (25-27 March): This was not a themed rally, but it turned out to be a sunshine rally. We arrived on Friday evening to be welcomed by our hosts: Harry, Arlene, Ernie and Sue, with help from their friends as well. After parking up and getting organised, we all went to the hall and bingo was played. There were quite a few prizes given out as well. People met up with friends old and new had a few drinks and listened to music. Saturday morning and yes, it was wall-to-wall sunshine yet again. Well done to the Marshalls for organising that. Some people walked into town for some retail therapy and others stayed and enjoyed the sunshine. Music was supplied on Saturday night by Robert Swann who played really well. We had 42 vans at the rally and I think everyone was in the hall that night. We also had a 50th wedding anniversary. Harold and Frances Heron and their >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 39
GROUP NEWS table was suitably decorated for the event. It was also one of our Marshalls birthdays as well (Harry). He wouldn't tell us how old he was! Sunday morning, our hosts welcomed new members Michael McManus and Deborah Walker. Our Chairman Joe also said a few words and thanked everyone for attending the rally. Prizes were then drawn out. The quiz was won by David Morrison and number plate draw Selma McMullan and Jennifer Smith. There were two other prizes drawn out as it was Mother's Day. The winners were Olena McFadden and Una Morrison. When we finished our coffee morning, everyone helped to put away all the chairs, tables etc. This helps our rally Marshalls a lot and makes life that little bit easier for them. Just to finish off, I would like to say again a big thank you to everyone who helped make this weekend the big success that it was! Vic and Sandra Lennox, Lily, Annie and Grace.
NWM&NW The rally at Offley Hey Village Hall (a new venue) was blessed with lovely sunny weather and we had quite a good turnout of vans with visitors from Avon, Bill and Sue Ginger and Severn Valley, Fred and Chris Allen. On Friday, we had the usual bingo, when most of the prize money was won by the visitors. Elaine and Jon Beck did manage to continue with their good fortune taking away a house and half line. Some went exploring the local area on Saturday. Jon and Elaine walked to Eccleshall and back. Unfortunately, some were slightly disappointed to discover the little pub was not serving meals yet, since closure for Covid-19. In the afternoon, there were games and cake with tea or coffee. This went well with lots of laughter and chat. The evening was spent playing indoor boules with teams of four. Following a couple of rounds and a semi-final, we had a nail-biting final between two Daves, Doris and Annemarie against Jon, Elaine, Bill and Sue. Game one was a draw after Mike spent some time on his knees carefully measuring. The two Daves, Doris and Annemarie, finally, took the decisive second game. A big thank you to everyone for taking part. A very successful meet hosted by Mike and Linda, thank you. Our visit to Fulford Village Hall (another new venue) had wonderful weather, though the nights were a little chilly. Quite a few problems struck the rally as some had to cancel because of illness and Mike and Linda had to go early on Saturday as Linda wasn't well. Friday evening there was no bingo (no equipment). So instead, we had an Irish Themed quiz as St Patrick's was only the day before. This was won by Martin, Roger and John who were in direct competition with their wives. The Jelly Babies were shared with everyone. Saturday was glorious, so some went walking around the village while others took the more leisurely approach and wandered to the Shoulder of Mutton pub. 40 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022
Unfortunately, it didn't open till 1pm, so they sat on the wall till opening time watching the world go by. A dice game was the entertainment for the evening when Dave Hall won all the twenty pences and tipped them into Liz's handbag. We then had ‘I can't remember the 80s quiz’ (not quite what was intended). It appears the 80s disappeared in most memories, or so they claimed. I wonder what they were doing! Darren and Shirley drew with Elaine and Jon. Well done. Many thanks to Peter for his support and to everyone for helping and attending. Upcoming rallies: 12-15 May, Belmont Camping, Warrington Road, Northwich, CW9 6HN, buses to Northwich, short walk to pub, £10 pupn. 27-30 May, The Hollies, CW5 7QX, a new venue, near Dagfields Antique Centre and the Boar's Head pub, £10 pupn.
SCOTTISH Hello to everyone. Hope you are keeping well. Our two meets in March were a great success at St. Andrews and Tayport. 20 vans attended Cairnsmill, St. Andrews, 15 Scottish and five visitors. Our visitors, three from N. Counties Neil and Jo Huggon, Bill and Ellen Handby, Ian and Sandra Simon. A special thanks to Neil for his work on and passing over control of the Scottish Group website. Also attending were Gary and Susan Skyba from S.W Peninsula, Glynn and Helen Carr from Severn Valley, haste you all back. Five new Scottish members attended David and Tracey Turner, Rob and Liz Napier, Valerie and Simon Morris, Steve and Karen Morrison, and Sandy and Dorothy Stephen. Thanks to our hosts Keith and Mary Smith Dutton. They handed out a quiz on entry to the site. An interactive brain teaser at the social evening which went down very well, some being very competitive. Our follow-on meet was at Larick C.P. Tayport. All 14 available sites were taken. This was a new site never used before by the Scottish Group which is still a work in progress. It had two H.S which were full others were grass but firm. It was situated alongside a community centre and café, used for our social evening and visits to the café were delightful with a variety of tempting cakes to sample. Ten Scottish members including Richard and Irene on their first rally. Four visitors moved on from Cairnsmill, two from Northern Counties, one from Severn Valley and one from S.W Peninsula. A great time was had by all at our social evening. Bill Christie ran a quiz on ‘name the company emblems’. 12 ladies had a visit to the local gin, vodka distillery coming back rather merry via the coffee shop. Hope to see you soon, Squeezebox. Upcoming rallies: 5-9 May Rosehearty, 9-13 May Alford, 23-26 May Lochgelly (amended rally charge 12pupn on grass and £16 on HS with EHU – Due to increased charges at Country Park).
GROUP NEWS SEVERN VALLEY Hello everyone, Unfortunately our rally at Avon Bank Meadow was cancelled due to the ground conditions caused by all the wet weather throughout the beginning of March. On a brighter note, 36 vans attended the next rally at Yew Tree Farm ,Bewdley. Of the 36 in attendance, 27 were Severn Valley, two from East Mids, one from NWM and NW, one from Anglia and five from Avon. Thank you to all the groups who joined us for this rally. The weekend weather was sunny if a little breezy, but at least it was dry, taking full advantage of the weather conditions some choose to walk or cycle in the Wyre Forest, or just to wander round the woodland walk and fishing lake on the site. On the Friday evening, Shaun kept us entertained with a game of bingo, followed by a general knowledge quiz from Kirstie, with prizes given out to the winners. Saturday, most members went to Bewdley using the bus service or local taxis. Bewdley is a busy market town, with independent shops,it also has a micro brewery serving traditional ales. On the Saturday evening, we were entertained by Shooting Stars, a singing duo. During the interval, Shaun and Jo hosted a game of 'Play your Cards Right' with prizes given out to Tony and Jeremy. The weekend ended with tea, coffee and biscuits followed by the raffle. Looking forward to future rallies. Hopefully, Severn Valley members should have received the 2022 rally programme in the post. The date for the Ledbury rally isn’t correct: Ledbury Rugby Club is 29 April-2 May with live music on the Saturday night and a table top sale on the Sunday selling motorhome related items. On the subject of rallies: Rally hosts are needed for the following rallies: 27-29 May, Holding Stables. 16-19 June, Bourton-on-the-Water. 1-3 July, Raphaels, Evesham. 15-18 July, Upton-on-Severn, Blues Festival. 15-18 August, Newlands Meadow, Malvern. 30 September-2 October, Avon Bank Meadow. 20-23 October, Riverside, Bridgnorth. If you can help, please contact Allen Warren (rally officer) or any committee member. Remember, no hosts/ no rallies. Please visit the website for full details of all our rallies throughout the year. Severn Valley look forward to seeing you in the upcoming weeks.

It’s a varied newsletter this month, starting with a report on Watergate Bay rally, which was held during that lovely warm spell back in March, from hosts Jackie and Stuart Mosley, who write: “Thank you to all who attended our rally at Watergate Bay. We had 27 vans, 16 SWPG and 11 West Country. The weather was very good to us with blue skies and lots of sunshine. Some people took the bus to Padstow and Newquay, some made use of the onsite swimming
pool, and some walked on the stunning Southwest Coast path. We were expertly entertained Friday and Saturday evenings by Ken from West Country, with Bingo, Play Your Cards Right, Mothers’ Day Quiz, Karaoke, singing and music, a really successful weekend enjoyed by all. Thank you to all who helped and supported us, on hosting our first rally. Jackie and Stuart.” As you will see in upcoming rallies, the start date for Higher Harlyn Park is drawing closer. This site is just over three miles outside of Padstow and offers a bar, restaurant, shop, and swimming pool all onsite. The area is great for walking and cycling plus the local buses service the surrounding towns including St. Austell, Padstow and Truro. A reminder that hosts get a free pitch and can choose whether to put on entertainment or not. Our group has not been able to secure a booking at Bude for this year and the RFC is looking at what dates are available for 2023. Please remember, there is an invitation for two of our Group’s members to attend an open meeting on June 10th at 4pm on our behalf at this year’s National AGM. Could you please let Barbara Noble know, this is also an opportunity to submit any questions which need to be submitted by May 16th. Upcoming rallies: 5-9 May: Carlyon Bay Holiday Park, PL25 3RE, £19 pupn inc ehu. 1-6 June: Home Farm, Blue Anchor, TA24 6JS, £12 pupn (NO EHU), bookings start May 1st. 21-27 June, Lady’s Mile Holiday Park, EX7 0LX, £15 pupn inc ehu, bookings start May 21. 1-4 July, Higher Harlyn Park, PL28 8SG, £19 pupn inc ehu, bookings start June 1.
S&W WALES Hello again, spring is certainly here now with the blossom just beginning to bloom but it was very cold at our Danyrogof Caves rally from the 1-3 April with nighttime temperatures well below freezing. However, the days were sunny and we had a warm welcome from our hosts Pam and Dave with Angela and Glyn. Special thanks to Angela and Glyn who stepped in to host at the last minute. There were 23 vans including first timer Cheryl James. The Danyrogof site is in a stunning location with spectacular views wherever you look; the facilities are excellent, and each pitch has its own power, water and grey water facility. Many took the opportunity to visit the impressive caves and the dinosaur park which is rated one of the best in the world. There are so many lifesize models, some animated, in a natural environment with informative information boards for them all, interesting for adults and children alike. The entrance fee includes entrance to the Shire Horse Centre where there are many rare breed animals as well as the beautiful horses and many child-friendly activities. Many took the short walk to the Gwyn Arms to enjoy their delicious meals at a very reasonable price and, perhaps, down a pint or two! >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41

Our forthcoming Aberystwyth ‘Platinum Rally’ should not be missed. There will be something going on every day including a 50’s Theme ‘Street Party’ on Sunday and fun competitions. There will be breakfast available in the Rugby Club, a Wetherspoons five minutes away and a short walk to town and the beach – what more could you want for a very special weekend. Hope to see you there as it is not bookable and there is no restriction on numbers. SUSSEX Not loads to report for Sussex as our last Rally was back in March! As reported, our Easter Rally has been fully booked since we publicised it with a large reserve list. Thanks all for your support. We've all been busy behind the scenes, preparing Easter and forthcoming rallies and checking for National attendance etc. Please let Carole know if you (Sussex members and anyone else parking with us) are going to attend the National so that we can make everyone aware of our Party Night theme. Also, if you are putting anything into the Homecraft, we'd all like to support you so please let me know. We wish Kent all the best hosting the Rally at Rye Rugby Club, a super venue. SRB Moorings (30 June) are still taking bookings (details in the Group Programme and Facebook page or phone Carole or Marilyn). Promises to be a good get together. At the Esher Rugby Club (14-19 July) Chiltern are invited and so are all you other MCC members. It's a large field and it'll be a weekend of soul music put on by the Rugby Club and we're hoping for a brilliant sunny weekend. Local trains to London and other parts of Surrey. A plug here for our Annual Village and Craft Show at South Harting on 19 August. Always a Sussex favourite and where life changing amounts of money have been won by our members at the Craft and Veg Show - I think the highest value was about 80p (yes pence!) Carole has the order of events and forms for entering the context. Looking forward to Jo's return for the next Magazine. Carole 42 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022
WEST COUNTRY Our meeting in April was held at The Hidden Valley CP, Nr IIfracombe, EX34 8NU. The weather was sunny all day but cold at night. Some brave people braved the chilly wind in the day and in sheltered spots began to top up their tans for the summer to come. A total of 31 motor homes, 20 from West Country, two from SWP, four from Avon, one from Anglian, two from West Wessex, one from S&SWW and one from the Channel Islands, all enjoyed a four night stay in a beautiful location with excellent amenities including a restaurant and bar. The bus stopped right outside the gate and a lot of members took advantage to visit other locations. A buffet was provided by the owners of the park on Friday night at a very reasonable price for a superb feast, followed by bingo and background music for everyone to chat, and on Saturday evening with games and Ken doing the music for people to get up and have a dance. On Sunday, the coffee morning was held at 10:30am with knitted dogs being sold and a raffle to win a mystery prize for the Chairman's Charity which was a two night stay camping at The Fox & Hounds Hotel in Okehampton. Ticket 147 was the lucky winner and is looking forward to enjoying a visit. The main raffle was then held and several people won great prizes as well. Our thanks to the hosts Jim and Jenny and Angela and Ian for a great weekend. Upcoming rally: 5-8 May, Bundu CP, Sourton Cross, Oakhampton, EX20 4HT. Please check with the Rally Officers before booking as the site is almost full.
WEST WESSEX With the March weather ranging from snow and sleet, strong winds and gales to brilliant sunshine, we have still managed to have three successful and much enjoyed TCS. Following on from our meet at Herston Farm, Swanage, we welcomed 20 motorhomes to Lytchett Manor on 17 March, 12 from West Wessex, three from East Wessex, two from West Country, one from Avon, one from Nene Valley and one from South West Wales. Many visited Poole to shop, admire the boats moored at the Quay or play crazy golf in the park. A few had their cars, some caught the bus, but one intrepid family walked the ten mile round trip (twice!) The Saturday market in Wareham was also a good day out. 32 members met at the nearby pub for a meal on Saturday evening, which was an ideal way to socialise and meet new friends. Many thanks to hosts Laurie and Sandra, ably assisted by Robert and Ann, who ensured that everyone had a good weekend. Numbers at Henstridge Golf Club on 31 March were reduced by illness but five West Wessex, two Avon and one West Country motorhomes enjoyed a friendly and social weekend. There was lots of walking, cycling and golf. The Club provided a ‘basket’ meal on Saturday evening, and we thank Roger
GROUP NEWS Clark who entertained with a quiz, music and singing. Thank you, Valerie and Tom, for hosting a grand weekend. The May Bank Holiday TCS 28 April-3 May is at Wareham Rugby Club, BH20 4EY (£9 pn). Book with Andy by texting only to 07746 058602. It’s an easy, flat walk into this little market town to look around the shops, sit with a drink or ice cream on the Quay or take a river boat trip to Poole. On Saturday, there is a Market on the Quay. There are lovely strolls around the SSI, through the reed beds and along the old town walls. A regular bus service runs to Poole and Swanage from town. There were a few places left at Three Magpies, Devizes, SN12 6RN, 19-22 May (£17 inc elec) at the time of writing. Please check availability and book with Mike and Bett on 07938 966035. The Platinum Jubilee Holiday meet on 1-6 June is at Weymouth RFC, DT3 5HZ. There will be celebrations and events in the town, which is a pleasant flat walk from the site. There will be activities in the Club, including a BBQ and we will have our own street party picnic. Please ring/text your details to Maria on 07887 393137. The National at Stafford Show Ground is 9-14 June, see MCC Handbook for details. Our sevennight TCS at Britt Valley Campground, West Bay, DT6 4EH runs from 25 June-2 July. Please book with Terry and Irene on 07905 704223. There is a £1 per person rally fee at each TCS. We hope to see you soon.
YORKSHIRE What a great weekend! The weather was beautiful and sunny. We had 21 vans turn up for our rally at Marsden Cricket Club. Friday night saw most of the members enjoying the club house with quizzes from Gillian, made a change to join in. On Saturday most of the members were out and about, going into Marsden, visiting the museum, and a dew member waking across the hill tops and round the reservoir. On Saturday night, we had more quizzes from Gillian, enjoyed by all who attended. Sunday was another lovely sunny day to travel home and look forward to our next rally. We had members from Northern Counties, Lancashire, East Midlands, Seven Valley and Yorkshire. Thank you to Steve, Gillian, Carol and Malcolm for hosting. Upcoming rallies: 1-5 June, Malton & Norton, YO17 7EY. 24-26 June, Burn Gliding Club, YO8 8LW. 30 June4 July, Duncombe Park, YO60 5EB.

A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE... LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay! LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are
welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £18 per night all in.

F
or Sassenachs like us, Scotland is the most delightful destination. Every time we cross the borders, we feel we have been magically transported through time into an astonishingly ancient landscape. For many, landscapes are simply visual concepts but for us, scenery also has a noticeably aromatic aspect. Scotland has a distinct and welcoming fragrance. Somehow, the bouquet of Scots pine, the smoky whisky distilled using local streams, and the evocative smell of wood-fire smoke fires burning, all
conspire to give us the feeling we have arrived somewhere special. The beauty of Scotland lies in its varied landscapes, with shifting mists that swirl around sharp mountain peaks, and the constant interaction with fast-moving and sometimes unpredictable weather patterns. That perhaps explains why we drive Voyager to Scotland at least twice every year. True, Scotland is not perfect, everything seems to happen just that little bit more slowly there. Try making a call on your cell phone, or downloading a daily newspaper on your tablet, and you will no >>

OUT & ABOUT | SCOTLAND >> doubt sigh in exasperation. And yes, the post can run a day or so late, the shops are frequently closed on Sundays, the ferries seem to run only when they want to, and the Scottish boozer does not always have the quaint charm of an English village pub beside the cricket green. But contrast that with the warm, welcoming friendliness of local folk who, mostly, seem to go out of their way to make we Sassenachs welcome, and you will quickly forgive Scotland its faults. As with travel anywhere in a motorcaravan, exploring Scotland requires careful planning, common sense, and an awareness of risk. You will need to factor in time delays when ferries do not run to time, or farmers using roads you are driving on to herd sheep. You will need to enjoy the change in pace. Don’t try and take too much on in a day, let landscapes lead you to your happy place. Scotland is full of them. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland provide the perfect antidote to our bustling existence. And knowing how full of inspiration they are to lovers of sea food, we were careful when planning our trip.
Hebrides and back
Our plan was to leave the mainland at Oban and ferry across to Castlebay on Barra. From there, we planned to drive north through the islands to Stornaway on Harris and leave by ferry to Ullapool. Not wanting to miss our ferry we stayed overnight close by Oban, overlooking Loch Creran with wonderful views towards the mountains. Oban is an important ferry port, the ‘Gateway to The Isles’ with ferries serving all the Small Isles, together with the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Our ferry, Lord of the Isles sailed at 1300 for its five and half hour trip to Castlebay on Barra. This meant we had just enough time to sample lunch at the Green Shack on the pier, tasting their famous, freshly landed fish. What 46 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022

a treat, and clearly a good omen for the start of our trip through the Gourmet Isles.
Vatersay and Barra
Driving off ferry on Barra, we headed for the tiny island of Vatersay. We camped overlooking Castlebay in a community van parking space. The £5 fee was collected by Donald MacNeil who was a mine of local information and campervan advice. What a stunning place to wake up in. Anywhere else in the world, these beautiful white, sandy beaches would be covered in human bodies tanning themselves, lazing on sun loungers, and sheltering from the heat under palm-thatched umbrellas. But here on Vatersay, the community café sells coffee and homemade cakes. And they are delicious. The ladies who bake and sell them, swear Vatersay cakes contain no calories... and of course we believed them. The next island northwards is Barra, famous for its airstrip on the beach. We watched in awe as the Logan Air flight flew in from Glasgow, landed on the
impacted sand, and its passengers disembarked into the tiny beachside terminal. Barra is also useful to motorhomers for its community shop and launderette in Castlebay. It is equally fascinating to visitors seeking the church graveyard where the author Compton Mackenzie was buried. For us, the island highlight is the seafood wholesaler, Barra Atlantic. It was there that we bought freshly-harvested scallops and later ate them for supper with a lemon-butter sauce. The campsite at Borve is small but brilliant and that means it is frequently over-booked. Do not expect to arrive and find a pitch
DON’T MISS Edinburgh Scotland’s capital city
The Scottish capital is the UK’s second most popular place for international visitors after London. As a city break destination, it offers the chance to appreciate centuries of passionate Scottish heritage.
The Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness
The Scottish Highlands are undoubtedly one of the grand scenic regions of Europe. They offer majestic mountains, with Ben Nevis Britain's highest, and a North Sea coastline scattered with remote fishing villages. Lock Ness is the UK's largest lake and home to the myth of a monster.
The Cairngorms
The Cairngorms are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands dominated by Cairn Gorm. Much of the area lies within the Cairngorms National Park, offering landscapes from the high windswept mountains and heather moorlands and peatlands to forests, wetlands and rivers.
Oban Sheep on Vatersay
available without booking well in advance.
Eriskay South Uist, Benbecular and Grimsay
The ferry to Eriskay leaves from Ardmhor at the north end of Barra. After disembarking, we drove across Eriskay stopping only at the community centre and shop just before the causeway that leads to South Uist. Our destination is Kilbride’s Campsite on South Uist where we parked up. It depends on which period of time you learned your history, but for most of us when you mention Eriskay, those who have studied the 18th century, will immediately recall that Charles (as in Bonnie Prince) Stewart landed here from France having crossed in his sloop Du Teillay stepping ashore in an attempt to rally his troops. If you studied the 2nd World War era, you would immediately remember that it was on Eriskay that SS Politican, a cargo ship carrying 20,000 cases of whisky foundered, and became the inspiration for a novel by Compton Mackenzie which later was released as a film called Whisky Galore.
Oban distillery, nestling beneath the steep cliffs overlooking the town, is one of Scotland’s oldest sources of single malt scotch whisky and is but a stone’s throw from the sea. The climb up to reach McCaig’s Tower built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCaig is well worth the effort.
North Coast 500
Often called NC500 this is Scotland’s answer to America’s iconic Route 66. It starts in Inverness and winds through 516 miles of incredible Scottish landscapes offering motorcaravan stops along the way in many little villages loaded with plenty of things to see and do.
Dundee
Home to the first V&A museum to be built outside of London, the city of Dundee offers so many things for visitors to see and do. The museum is a standout piece of architecture.
Driving north, be sure to stop at the Salar smokehouse on South Uist and buy hot-smoked salmon. Vacuum packed in pouches, it is the perfect meal for campervan galleys. Causeways link South Uist to Benbecular and from there onto Grimsay. There, we diverted to Kallin, a tiny fishing port in search of the Namara Seafood Café. We parked up on the harbour wall and organised a seafood platter with extras, as a takeaway for that night’s supper. Olga, the café manager, was happy to feed us and allowed us to park overnight on the dockside. What a place to spend the night if you love boats, and it cost nothing. It even had water and
we were able to empty our cassette.
North Uist and Bernaray
The Balarald campsite next door to the RSPB bird sanctuary is a popular spot to overnight in. Less than a quarter of a mile further along the beach is Manish Point, a smaller quieter field that has just three pitches without electricity or cassette emptying. It did have water and rubbish disposal and campers are asked to leave cash in an honesty box attached to the fence. It was on that site we set out to cook our own gourmet meal in a motorcaravan. Creating the most delicious creamy smoked haddock chowder and serving it with bacon, >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 47
OUT & ABOUT | SCOTLAND >> we added freshly baked corn scones from the oven. We had picked the haddock up on Barra and it had kept well in the fridge. Finishing off our meal with a glass of single malt, we looked out over the most wondrous of seascapes in the long evening light and considered how lucky we were to have our van here. From the north of Bernaray, the ferry sails to Leverburgh on South Harris. The ferry terminal is basic to say the least. The promised cafe and showers no longer exist but there are public toilets and, as is so often the case, a cassette emptying point. We made use of both.
comes well recommended. Sam Cressey came to Harris three years ago with his artist partner. Before that he lived on the Isle of Wight. His smoked mussels in beer batter are to die for, as are his roasted potatoes with seaweed. We also had scampi and fish goujons. Finding his clifftop shack was a little tricky, but the parked cars and long queue of hungry punters

Our 50-minute sea passage was uneventful, and we docked at Leverburgh on time and to be truthful, were a little hungry for lunch. Our chosen eatery was Sam’s Seafood Shack because it

provided the final clues. Don’t be put off by the long wait. Sam cooks everything to order and every mouthful is a winner. Lorna’s Larder is another well reviewed roadside takeaway food cabin. What makes Lorna different is that she also sells a selection of ready to go meals that can be reheated later. The beaches on Harris are the island's signature attraction and justifiably so. Lustkentyre, the most famous, is just two miles off the main road. Motorcaravans can stay here overnight but numbers are limited to three and require a donation be left in the honesty box. Tarbert is a tiny town that marks the point where South Harris becomes North Harris. Stop here to buy Harris Tweed and taste a Harris Gin distilled right next to the ferry terminal. OUT & ABOUT | SCOTLAND >> another stunning spot. The community of North Harris has thoughtfully set up motorhome stopover points across the island. Just leave a donation in the money box and enjoy a peaceful night undisturbed by anyone. Our view over Loch Maraig was stunning. The islands of North Harris and Lewis are, in fact, one (no matter what the locals say) but once over the border they seem very different. North Harris is hilly, rocky, and barren in places. Lewis, by contrast, is lush, green, and undulating. When you get to Stornaway and have time to spare, head for Lews Castle. There are some lovely walks in the extensive grounds. Consider driving on further to visit the standing stone circle at Callanash or the Blackhouses at Carloway. We used our time in Stornaway for some food shopping. We visited McClouds the Butchers to buy black
pudding, white pudding and even fruit pudding and Island Seafoods on the quayside for its wonderful selection of freshly landed fish. The Hebridean Smokehouse close by the ferry terminal is another essential stop – for kippers this time. If you need laundry done, visit the Bridge Community Centre. Try and time your visit over lunchtime and enjoy the excellent looking Thai food the cafe sells while your wash gets tumbled dry. The Laxdale Holiday Park – close to the ferry terminal – is the perfect last night stop. It is a compact, well laid out site with full facilities, beautifully clean and tidy. Next day it was time for us to leave and head for the mainland. Catching the early morning departure, we set off home with a fridge full of goodies to enjoy later, recalling all the gastronomic delights the islands have to offer.

What is it that you carry in your van that makes living outdoors more enjoyable? Frances and Michael Howorth open up their under the bed storage space and reveal all
L
ike many motor caravan owners, we enjoyed our visit to the Caravan Camping and Motorhome show a few months back. We joined the queues to get in, clutching our shopping list like children lining up to see Santa Claus at the local department store before Christmas. After months of Covid lockdowns and limited face to face shopping opportunities, we were hoping to put all our research into action and buy outdoor accessories
for our campervan. Buying on-line is, without a doubt a wonderful concept, but when you want to feel the fabric and assess the quality, nothing beats a hands-on encounter with the real product. High on our list, was the need to extend our outdoor living space. Voyager was designed for just the
two of us and that would be just fine and dandy had the grandchildren not fallen in love with the idea of going away with us for the weekend. The pop-up, pup-tent we bought from Decathlon was, and still is, effective, but given their age, we were reluctant to have them sleeping so remotely from the van. Clearly, a drive away >> May 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 53
ACCESSORIES awning was what was wanted. Or so we thought! Vango based in Glasgow had an impressive, well laid out stand staffed with a knowledgeable sales team, and we quickly learned the differences between drive away awnings with poles and those with self-inflating tubes. The former can scratch paintwork when assembled by those who are not well practised, and the latter can be heavier and take longer to set up. But it was the team at Hill View Awnings that set us on the path that we eventually followed. They were displaying a Panorama Room from Thule and the space, robustness and design seemed to suit us best, even if the price tag did not, when compared with the cost of a drive away unit! Let’s face it, most of us spend as much time outside our vans as we do inside them, if you subtract the time sleeping and driving! So, it is important that you get it right when you choose accessories that you use outside the van. Not everything we use is as large or heavy as the awning. In fact, we spend a great deal of effort choosing accessories that fold way for space savings and do not endanger our payload figure. Products need to be lightweight, yet strong and robust but not bulky. Getting it right can be tricky! So where have we scored well and where have we failed when it comes to buying outdoor accessories? Yes,
most of us have folding tables and chairs for outside use, but how do they pack away and how easy are they to assemble. Our first set of folding armchairs ticked every box, but on a trip to the South of France, we discovered they were too hot to sit in and after a while, they were simply not comfortable enough to stay put on! They had to go. They were replaced by CK Chairs,
similar in size, colour and weight but crucially, the fabric is held onto the chair frame with bungee elastic, meaning the seat moves as body weight shifts, making for a much more comfortable sitting position. Sitting outside on a summer evening, as the sun goes down frequently sounds the signal for small biting insects to fly in and spoil the fun. We started using >>

ACCESSORIES citronella candles to ward them off, and mostly we were successful, but we did find a portable electronic lantern that has a zapper feature is equally effective. Given the rechargeable Lepro unit doubles as a torch, it beats the single functioning citronella candle into a cocked hat! Many campsites ban the use of BBQ fires. For those that don’t, we carry our latest toy - a foldable, and therefore portable, fire pit. Sold under the Spear and Jackson brand, this made in China accessory, is great to sit round to enjoy an extended time in the evening air. And, at less than £25, we think it is an absolute bargain! For those sites that do not allow BBQ use, we find the self-contained, fan
assisted, Lotus Grill a perfect substitute. Stoke it up with small pieces of charcoal, add a little liquid ignitor fluid, and switch on the fan as the match is struck. Less than 5 minutes later, you have a very useable cooking heat source that is not only easy to control, but smokeless to boot. Not cheap at £200, we grant you, but well worth the money in our book. ‘Cleanliness is next to godliness,’ was a phrase often used by mothers when we were young, and it seems to have stuck in our psyche! Perhaps it is the reason why another of our favourite outdoor accessories is our portable shower tent. It pops up,
tardis like, from inside its container, to become a cubicle the size of a police phone box. Purchased from Decathlon, this clever unit can also be used to stow away the chairs and tables when they are not wanted and can be left up on site if we need to drive the van away for a short while. Add black, Quechua solar, shower bags (also from Decathlon), filled with cold water and left in the sun to heat up, and we find we stay sweet smelling and fresh. Taking enough clothes on a trip to avoid wasting holiday time using a launderette, is always a fine line between carrying too much and not having enough. Cupboard space on board is often the limiting factor. So, to go with the EasyCamp washing line, pegs and the Vango clothes drying rack, which are, after all, outdoor accessories in their own right, we have added the Scrubba >> travel washing machine stealth

ACCESSORIES >> pack. This clever 4 in 1 device is a portable clothes washer, waterproof backpack, dry bag, and camping shower all rolled into one handy and highly versatile package. Widely available, including from that mail order firm named after a South American river, the Scrubba is good value at £75. Being outdoors is half the fun of owning and enjoying a motor caravan. Enhancing the fun is the function of every outdoor accessory you consider buying. Or at least, it should be. One of our more successful purchases, using that philosophy, is our tow bar mounted, bike rack. Ours is made by Thule, but there are many similar brands to consider, each with their own merits and distractions. When buying one however, remember to consider where you will stow it when it is with you on the road, but not attached to the campervan. In our case, leaving it fixed to the tow bar, prohibits our use of the rear doors, but it is too expensive to just leave lying around. Our solution to this problem, is to employ the use of an OnGuard bicycle lock with a heavy-duty wire. Threaded through both the towing eye on the van chassis, and the
accessory is not in fact an accessory at all and is best described as a fitting. That be as it may, but the fact is; our automatic E&P selflevelling system is top choice when it comes to writing this feature. We arrive on site, pick up the handheld controlling device and press the button. Hey presto, the van is straight and level in just two minutes without the fuss and hassle of having to use ramps or blocks. That in turn, saves space and allows us to carry yet more outdoor accessories! Now let us see, when is the next show? OUTDOOR MUST HAVES Hitch up right Fitting a tow hook to your van adds flexibility to the way you use it. It allows you to easily add storage space or a bike rack. It can also aid reducing your onboard payload if you tow a trailer. Suns Up Motor caravans tend to need serious charging power for extended touring away from mains hook ups. If you want to avoid using a generator, you'll probably need a solar panel kit rated from 60W to 130W permanently installed on your roof. Leisure battery replacement advice
U
nless hooked-up to a mains supply, the electrical equipment in your motorhome relies on the power from a 12-volt leisure battery, which differs from a standard car battery, because it must provide a steady flow of current over a prolonged period between relatively infrequent charging, rather than a big draw of current on engine turnover and constant charging. However, if the battery is left in a discharged state for a long time or is left connected to a load that forces it into an over discharged state, it will not be able to regain its former level of power storage capacity, so will ultimately have to be replaced. Choosing the correct leisure battery for your needs, starts with understanding your power usage, combined with the size of the space available to house it and the extent to which it is hooked up to a mains supply. So, if your need is primarily for less demanding lighting functions, or you tend to spend almost all the time hooked up to a supply, you’ll probably consider a less durable battery in comparison to an owner who spends most of their time off grid, using high power consuming equipment. Leisure battery performance is measured in cycles, which refer to the number of discharge/recharge cycles the battery is capable of when
60 MOTOR CARAVANNER May 2022
discharged by up to 50% between recharging. Whilst a NCC (National Caravan Council) rating can be a useful guide as to the performance of a battery, it can mask the real value of a higher performing/ greater cycling battery, which is why, once its key attributes have been determined, battery cycles can also
be a great means of establishing the long-term value of a battery. For example, rather than simply comparing the prices of two NCC ‘C’ rated, 75AH leisure batteries from different suppliers, consider the number of cycles each battery can offer. So, if one battery is £72 and provides 70 cycles, but the other is £82 and provides 230 cycles, the respective cost per cycle is £1.03 for the first battery and just £0.36 for the second, which makes a big difference when it comes to the return on your investment. For further details, please visit Ecobat Battery at: www.ecobatbattery.co.uk
THE SOLAR SOLUTION
To prolong the life of your batteries and ensure they remain in peak condition when off grid, you should consider the use of a solar panel to benefit from the sun’s environmentally friendly and free energy. However, it must be used in conjunction with a suitable controller to manage and regulate the charging process. Products, such as the BlueSolar Panel Kits from Victron Energy, provide an excellent solution and
contain the panels, controller, cabling and mounting system, in one package. Naturally you’ll have to work out the appropriate wattage for your battery combination, but with single and twin panel kits ranging from 60 to 175 watts, there’s sure to be one that suits your requirements.
