Are you driving illegally?

When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded! Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!

When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up-to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these figures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg). This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.

Need to uprate to carry more payload?

If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models. Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.

Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?

SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg. For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free-to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload. Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.

For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk

From the Chair

While these members quite rightly receive lots of praise I must also mention those who volunteer in other ways such as recruiting and marshalling at the Trade Shows, running our website and last but not least our Office and supporting staff. It seems strange that when you read this Halloween will be a memory, Bonfire night will be upon us and then it will soon be Christmas – hasn’t the year passed quickly! Most groups have next year's rally programme planned so we can already start to look forward to 2024. I will finish by saying enjoy your Motor caravan in the month to come.

Maurice and Alice celebrating the New Year in 2016

MAURICE MERCHANT Ex-President & past Group Chairman, East Midlands Group It was with great sadness that we received the news that Maurice died in August. The family had requested privacy, hence this belated testimony to Maurice. Past positions held by Maurice as an Army Officer and Town Crier ensured that when he spoke, he was heard – an attribute that served us well at meetings and coffee mornings. He became everybody’s friend in the Club during his 20 or so years with us and he and his wife Alice became well known across many other Groups. Aside from his term of duties as President and Group

Chairman, he was a lovely man to be with at any time; an absolute gentleman, with time for anybody of any age. Many people will have memories of him and his antics at social evenings and his rendition of Danny Boy was his party piece. Maurice and Alice moved to Cheddar a few years ago and several members visited them to continue their valued friendship. His loss is particularly hard for these close friends to bear. Our thoughts and prayers are now for his wife Alice who has been in care for some time. RIP Maurice

SHOWROOM SHORTLIST Auto-Trail is the only volume British convertor of ‘A-Class’ motorcaravans

THE

LONG GOOD BUY W

ith a nod to Raymond Chandler’s seminal ‘The Long Goodbye’, the featured four this month really are a ‘long good buy’. Further, they are all built in the UK. Three are low-profile/Luton overcab coachbuilts, one is an ‘A-Class’ (integral) coachbuilt. A fellow rallier once observed that, “the bigger the `van, the fewer people are in it”. There may be a grain of truth in that, but we’ve noticed that the traditional quoted users of multiberth `vans i.e. Mum, Dad and their children, are being joined by two

Buying advice from Gentleman Jack. Part 1: UK coachbuilts over 26ft (7.925m)

different groups of mob-handed motorcaravanners. The first may be related, but are not the ‘traditional family-unit’, instead formed from wider multi-generational family members or perhaps the families of two siblings. The other ‘new’ group concluding that a multi-berth motorcaravan is their ideal leisure vehicle, are friends, sometimes united by an interest (photography, birding, motorsports, whatever), or who are just amiable travelling companions. The latter groups in particular – and all purchasers in general – should ensure that not only there are sufficient travelling seats and berths for their current

and envisaged usage patterns, but – crucially – the berths are of the right type. For example, highlevel overcab beds are unlikely to be accessible to all, and for some, sharing a double-bed might not be appropriate. Throughout their rapid rise in the motorhome sales league table, Bailey has only offered the (Al-Ko) Peugeot Boxer derivative of the SEVEL chassis for its Autograph range. The author’s own coachbuilt is on a Boxer and he feels that their built-in-house engine is one of the best on offer. However, this is offset by Pug’s refusal – so far anyway – to offer an automatic transmission >>

>> option. Just about understandable when it would have been Fiat’s ComfortMatic…because Fiat paid all the development costs, but now that a torque-converter gearbox from a third-party specialist transmission manufacturer is used in the Ducato; not to offer it on the Boxer and Relay beggars belief. The featured motorcaravans are all powered by Euro 6D (final) turbo-diesel engines. At the time

of writing, none offered any sort of hybrid alternative. Euro 6 is said to be fine currently for those living or travelling in London’s ULEZ, but… firstly politicians have a habit of shifting the goalposts, and secondly where London has led, other cities

AUTO-SLEEPER BURFORD DUO Two highly regarded marques (Mercedes-Benz and AutoSleepers) come together to form not one but two Burfords. Burford Duo replaces the standard Burford’s permanent double-bed ahead of the full-width changing area, with two permanent easyaccess longitudinal single-beds. and towns are likely to follow. Also be aware that all drivers will require Group C1 on their driving licence. Points to ponder Motorcaravans cost a lot of money new, buying a nearly-new example can offer a considerable saving. If buying pre-owned, check that any remaining warranties are transferable. Finally, these motorcaravans are long (the clue is

4

in the title); double-check that your choice will fit on your driveway. Some overlook this in the ‘heat of the (purchasing) moment’ with disastrous consequences! We recommend you take a close look at the following inspected and evaluated motorcaravans and suggest you add them to your shortlist! Note that OTR prices are for guidance only and subject to change.

Double-check travel seats and berths are sufficient and suitable. Pictured: [1] Fixed travel seats in the Bailey Autograph 81-6. [2] Foldaway Aguti travel seats in the Swift Kon-Tiki 894. [3] Auto-Trail’s Grande Frontier 88 offers the option of an ‘L’-shaped offside settee which converts into twotravel seats. As always, the devil is in the detail. Pull-out additional worktop in the Auto-Sleeper Burford adds work surface (4), but unlike many, doesn’t compromise adjacent seating.

Bear in mind Inset rear wheels, long rear overhang.

review’s pricing, because (a) we think the pack is good VFM and (b) can’t envisage anyone buying a Burford without auto transmission, air-con, awning, and so on. Burford has a lengthy rear overhang with a shallow departure angle (See Tech Talk, September’s Motor Caravanner magazine) and may not be suitable for those with steep driveways or frequent users of ferries to remote islands. Go for it • Quality habitation vibe • Follow the three-pointed star • Direct-to-customer A-S spares service • Twin permanent easy-access single-beds. • Level floor throughout.

SHOWROOM SHORTLIST

BAILEY AUTOGRAPH 81-6 Bailey’s Autograph 81-6 has by far the most flexible interior layout of our featured four, and is unique in that it offers six sleeping berths and six travel seats as standard. Bailey remains the only volume UK manufacturer to crash test a fitted-out motorhome body, thus passengers should feel reassured that every precaution to avoid ‘flying furniture’ has been taken. This interior design is frequently inaccurately described as a ‘threeroom layout’. These are lounge/ diner upfront, kitchen amidships and a triple-aspect sitting-room at the rear. Obviously, adherents to the terminology have failed to count the washroom, which by my arithmetic

OTR pr

ice fr

£88,9 om: 99

makes it four rooms! There aren’t any permanent beds, though the front drop-down high-level transverse bed can be left made-up. Couples or smaller families with the 81-6 sometimes leave the rear sitting-room made-up as two single beds or as a gigantic over-all double. Of course, unlike permanent beds, these quickly revert to seating as and when required.

The standard level of specification includes independentlysprung galvanised chassis extensions, wet ‘radiator’ central heating system, solar panel, windout canopy awning, plus much more. Perhaps expected among the opposition here, but not at the Bailey’s (relatively) modest price tag. Go for it • 6-berths + 6-travel seats • Flexible ‘family favourite’ layout • Fabulous VFM • Alu-Tech construction • Smooth, economical engine. Bear in mind No automatic transmission option. Spec check Length: 8.12m (26’ 8”) Travel Seats: 6 Sleeps: 6 Power Train: Peugeot Boxer 165bhp turbo-diesel, front wheel drive Max payload: 850kg. In a nutshell An Autograph that’s worth ‘collecting’.

AUTO-TRAIL GRANDE FRONTIER 88 A-Class motorcaravans (‘integrals’ in Europe) are frequently seen as the most desirable of all coachbuilts. That said, only AutoTrail currently builds them in any number in the UK. Early Grande Frontiers were underpinned by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the current range are all on the Fiat Ducato/ Ducato Al-Ko chassis-cowl. Layout in the 88 is the same as that in A-T’s hugely popular and long-running Commanche overcab coachbuilt. So why pay the extra dosh for the Grande Frontier then? Quite simply, to enjoy the spaciousness of a fully integrated cab in their leisure vehicle. The wider cab makes it a better place to relax in on-site, and the bigger windscreen offers a regal ‘driving environment’. Forward of the entrance vestibule is the lounge consisting of two long inwardfacing settees and swivelling cab seats…as standard. A cost option is an L-shaped settee on the offside

which can be converted to a double travel seat in a jiffy. Opposite the entrance vestibule is the offside kitchen, although the fridge-freezer and microwave are on the nearside. The bedroom containing ‘en-suite’ facilities, a permanent peninsula double-bed and two wardrobes, is situated at the rear of the vehicle. Go for It • British-built ‘A’-Class • Entrance and cab doors on the correct side for the UK • Choice of lounge layouts. • Chassis upgrade offering a mega payload • Tandem rear axles Bear in mind Our advice for purchasers of any motorcaravan, but particularly ‘A’Class models is not to commit to purchase until you have driven one. The wider cab and huge windscreen gives some drivers palpitations

initially, but most will quickly adjust. Spec check Length: 8.8m (28’ 10.5”) Travel Seats: 2 (4 optional) Sleeps: 4 Power Train: Fiat Ducato 180bhp turbo-diesel, automatic transmission, front wheel drive Max payload: 817kg standard (see ‘Go for it’) In a nutshell ‘A’- class act…without an Achilles heel

SWIFT KON-TIKI 894 Apart from a brief interlude featuring their Bel-Air ‘A’-Class, Kon-Tiki has been Hull-based Swift’s flagship coachbuilt range since the 1980’s. It is one of the most recognisable marques. Over

time, all manufacturers’ entry-level ranges have become better and better equipped, more luxurious and less spartan – a phenomenon known as ‘market drift’. This has made it difficult for converters to make their mid-market and flagship ranges identifiably ‘different’, ‘better’, and worth the extra dosh! That Swift has achieved this with the Kon-Tiki throughout its long production run, is testament to their design team’s ability, plus (presumably) a result of taking notice of consumer research and changes in purchasers’ preferences. The Kon-Tiki 884 and 894 (featured) share the same layout ahead of the bedroom, i.e. a forward lounge and central kitchen. Both also feature en-suite facilities in the bedroom, The bedroom in the 884 has twin longitudinal single-beds, whereas in the 894 an adjustable-height permanent peninsula double-bed is featured. At first glance the 894 doesn’t appear to have any travel seats in the rear. This is because they use

top-tackle Aguti travel seats that fold-away under the settees when not required. Go for it • Contemporary interior • Large exterior-access garage • Aguti travel seats • Top engine and automatic transmission standard • Smart™ construction.

Part 2: European coachbuilts over 26ft (7.925) will be in January 2024’s edition of the Motor Caravanner

Bear in mind Might be worth looking at the shorter (7.84m/25’ 9”) Kon-Tiki 794. Same layout, but with a smaller lounge. Spec check Length: 8.96m (29’ 5”) Travel Seats: 4 Sleeps: 4 Power Train: Fiat Ducato 160 bhp turbo-diesel, front wheel drive Max payload: 1,105kg. In a nutshell Classy carriage from Cottingham.

P

for outdoor adventures begins to increase. Just because the sun has lurched off towards the southern hemisphere, does not mean we cannot have fun. As autumn becomes winter, we enjoy rediscovering that festive spark! We enjoy frosty walks under clear skies, hot chocolate around a campfire, Christmas markets and that all important winter barbecue. For us that’s what the lead up to Christmas is all about. But, if all that sounds far too energetic, then we have some less active pursuits you might engage in during to the lead up to Christmas.

ack away the swimming costume, your factor 50, and the Ray-Ban shades, the summer sun is heading south. Instead, motorcaravanners should dig out hiking boots, chunky-knit jumpers and waxed jackets and get ready to enjoy the lead up to Christmas. Somehow, summer seems to steal the limelight when it comes to exploring the great outdoors, but as the evenings draw in and days become cooler, our appetite

Christmas illuminations Illuminated Christmas trails, in gardens around the country, are now firmly positioned as one of the highlights of the UK festive calendar. A great way to kick off the festive season is to wander through pictureperfect gardens filled with Christmas cheer, as more than a million lights and seasonal sounds fill the air.

20 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2023

There are plenty of opportunities to do so all over the land, and here are a few suggestions as to where to go. Stourhead in Wiltshire, is a Palladian house with a Christmas garden that has been described as a 'living work of art'. The curated trail features the stunning Christmas Cathedral, in which more than a thousand pea lights are woven into the forest landscape. Marvel at the 'Sea of Light', neon stars wrapping trees and a brilliant nova, providing plenty of selfie moments along the way. In Grantham, Lincolnshire, the National Trust's Belton House is getting ready to welcome back its glittering Illuminated Trail. Get

your Christmas sparkle on and be surrounded by over a million twinkling lights, colourful trees, and amazing illuminated installations. The lights are choreographed to a soundtrack of much-loved seasonal music, transforming the majestic gardens into a winter wonderland. There are colour-changing spheres, a Sea of Light, a sparkling rose garden and stars leading to larger than life mistletoe, all of which provide plenty of Kodak moments along the twokilometre trail. The Christmas trail on the Wimpole Estate in Arrington, returns each year to see the grounds transformed into a magical spectacle. Filled with sparkling tunnels of light, giant baubles and trees are illuminated in Christmas colours. Curated installations include a green laser garden, the romantic Heart Arch, Snowflake Park and an Instagram favourite; the Christmas Cathedral. Pause at the mesmerising flickering flames in the fire garden and don't forget to glimpse Father Christmas along the way. The Christmas trail at the National Trust's Gibside Estate, near Gateshead, features larger than life illuminations choreographed to favourite Christmas tunes. The family-friendly trail returns to the Georgian garden this winter. Installations include; artist works such as The Pealit Tree, Sea of Light and Snowflake Park, which shimmers and takes on different colours. Perhaps our favourite is the one closest to our home in East Sussex. Bedgebury National Pinetum and >>

They portray the pinetum in a majestic light; the unique canopies are drenched in colours inspired by the landscape to create a festive adventure for all the family. Near Oxford, the Kingdom of The Snow Queen is re-imagined each year within the Palace at Blenheim.

Explore the Palace rooms, each one exquisitely transformed and filled with hidden surprises. Discover the glistening Land of Snowflakes filled with a silvery frost-covered forest and venture into the wintry Kingdom of Ice, adorned with large shimmering crystals. Christmas markets Christmas markets are a tradition in Germany, Belgium and Holland. France also has some real stunners, but the UK is catching on fast. Here at home, Christmas markets rival those of Europe. The Newcastle and Gateshead Christmas Markets stand out and have an international appeal. Enjoy a Christmassy day out and take the opportunity to explore the city and its neighbourhoods Enjoy delicious food and drinks along with live entertainment from local musicians, all supporting independent businesses and trade. The market is held next to the iconic Grey’s Monument, named after the 2nd Earl Grey, Charles, who hailed from here in the North East and was British Prime Minister in the 1830s. The tea blend, Earl Grey, was named after him too! The Steam Dreams Rail Company provide magical steam train journeys and are fully embracing the Christmas spirit with festive day trips to some of the UK's much beloved Christmas Markets. >>

NOVEMBER 2023

ANGLIA Twenty-one vans came to Witnesham for our traditional bangers and mash rally. This year the stewards and cooks were Keith, Teresa, Caz, and Ben assisted by Paul our general factotum. The weather was hot to say the least and shade was sought wherever it could be found! Thursday evening tea , coffee and chat in the hall. Friday evening there was a fish and chip run by the stewards five miles each way, then in hall for bingo and music. Saturday evening we had our bangers and mash with a sweet, the two crumbles were made on site with apples and blackberries picked the same day so they didn’t come any fresher. Paul then put on Call My Bluff which went down well followed by a quiz. Don’t know where he finds the questions from but we had to work our brains. Sunday morning tea, etc. Bonus Ball, & a raffle. In the evening Jenga and general chat. Well done to the stewards. (Unfortunately we have just heard before this went to press that the owners cannot take any more rallies due to the hall fabric needing work done and Brian after his illness cannot do the work required. ) Thirty-three vans came to Whittlesey College for a 1940 themed weekend. There was building work going on which reduced the parking available but we all fitted in somehow. Friday night was bingo which as usual was beneficial to some members. The local charity shops and Wetherspoons did well on Saturday. However Saturday night there was a buffet of 1940s themed sandwiches including corned beef, SPAM, bread & dripping, egg, cheese, meat paste and not forgetting my favourite brawn (or pork cheese as it is also called). Jam tarts for sweet. The stewards and many members dressed up to the part and we had pilots, land girls, flowery flowing dresses with bows, and the music to match as well as the Home Guard and the USAAF! The raffle Saturday evening was a twist on the usual since all the prizes

were wrapped. There was a lot of deception in the wrapping and a big parcel didn't mean a big prize. Sunday morning Ken's Dodgy Dip was won by Tracey. A very good weekend with thanks to the stewards Ken and Rose Dowle, Chris and Rose Bramley who looked after us so well. On a serious note if you have booked for Xmas party or new year and find you will be unable to come please let Carol know as there is a large waiting list for both events. Advance information re 2024 bookable rallies. Booking for these will open at noon on Sunday 7th January 2024. Full details will be in your programmes when they are sent out late Nov or early Dec. Scribe Derek Upcoming rallies: 10-12 November at Terrington St. Clements Village Hall PE34 4LZ. Start: 5pm. Entertainer: Mark Steele. Bookable to teresa.poole50@virginmedia.com or 07739 463321. Any member who has not paid for Xmas party could they please pay at the Terrington rally if possible.

AVON Manor Farm at Burton Bradstock was enjoyed by 16 vans. Good weather enabled members to sit out in the evenings for a quiz, card bingo, music and singing. A newly enrolled member had a rally to remember, he won the bottle of whisky! Well done. At Burton Hill, Malmesbury, Pimms, nibbles, cake, buses to Swindon and Cirencester, quiz, rolls, sandwiches, sausages, sausage rolls, tomatoes, crisps, etc, plus walks into Malmesbury, to have a saunter round and visit the famous Abbey, more cake and Pimms and a raffle. Something to please everyone according to the messages of thanks received. Thank you to both sets of hosts. Events to look forward to: 8-11 December our Christmas celebrations. Booking for this rally is in two parts. We will be staying at Holiday Park Unity, Coast Road, Burnham on Sea, TA8 2RB. Book this with Jacky Travis, Avon Sec on 07881 558995. £14.25pupn. A festive buffet and dancing to a great group, Six Machine will be in the nearby Tavern on 9 December, 7pm to 1am, £29.95 per person and must be >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29

GROUP NEWS booked with the venue, online https://bookwhen.com/blp/e/ ev-s8ub-20231209190000 (mention MCC). Dress is smart casual and MCC members will be seated together. Buses pass the site to Burnham and Weston super Mare. 29 December-1 January we are returning to Whitstone School at Shepton Mallet, BA4 5PF. There are plenty of charity shops, supermarkets and independent traders and eating establishments within an easy walk, but we have plenty planned to keep you occupied during the days and evenings alike. Jigsaws, games, tea/coffee, cakes and quizzes in a well heated room. The theme throughout will be ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’, so thinking caps on to decorate your tables and yourselves. The scope is endless. £18pupn (couple), £12pupn (singles). Music will be by Pete and on 30th we will have “your very own end of the pier review”. Sing, dance, recite, act, it’s time to get rehearsing. Fancy dress on New Year’s Eve and we will serve a light supper. A text on 07881 558995 will help with catering but otherwise bookings will not be necessary nor taken. Unusually we have to leave on 1 January but we will give you chance to recover from the celebrations by not closing the site until mid-afternoon. Upcoming rallies: 8-11 December our christmas celebrations at Holiday Park Unity, Coast Rd, Burnham-onSea TA8 2RB. 29 December-1 January is New Year rally at Whitstone School, Charlton Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 5PF.

CHILTERN Cottesloe School on 1-3 September was hosted by Sue and Paul ably assisted by Pete and Hazel. 11 vans attended this rally in the middle of our area and were blessed with excellent weather. The comments on social media were all in praise of the hosts and attendees. Another cracking Chiltern Rally. Pete entertained us on Friday with a music quiz and Paul and Sue challenged us with quizzes on Saturday. We enjoyed cakes and good company on Saturday afternoon in the sunshine. Thanks very much to the excellent hosts. Good weather, good company and an enjoyable time. Lovely venue, well organised, great company and some fiendish quizzes. I’ll have to mug up on my trivia? Thank you all, for a lovely relaxing weekend. Hope to see you all soon. Valley Farm on 14-17 September hosted by Chrissie, Mike, Carole and Roy. Chiltern’s three-night rally at Farmoor (some four miles from Oxford) saw 13 vans attending: 12 Chiltern and one visitor from Sussex, Morris and Marion. One Chiltern attendee were first-timers David and Francis Collins from Hermitage, and also returning after a long spell Linda and Michael Bennet from Bedford. Despite the traffic nightmare (four hours plus delays) on the A420 most chose alternate routes to arrive in good time on Thursday. Thursday evening saw a fine turnout in the shelters for a little quiz and a glass or two of Christine’s legendary punch. Due to the convenient proximity of the bus stops, many 30 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2023

chose to visit Witney on Friday while a hardy few took a walk to the nearby reservoir. Friday night Christine’s punch was back by popular demand and a very entertaining Chinese raffle. Saturday afternoon we met again for a chinwag, and our hosts provided gratefully received scones. The main quiz was undertaken in the evening, with the raffle drawn, the competition results announced and a 10p cube game played. Sunday morning Carol advised forthcoming events, the next rally being the AGM at Windsor. It was time for farewells to what was a very relaxing and enjoyable break. Many thanks to our hosts Christine and Mike ably assisted by Carole and Roy. Upcoming rallies: 29 December-2 January at Cottesloe School LU7 0NY. Bookable.

EAST MIDLANDS Bookable rallies: Contact Anne Taylor by text or email anneeastmidlands@gmail.com. Springfields Dinner/Dance and Ingoldmells New Year. Bookings now being taken. Our Christmas Party at Waddington is fully booked, to go on the waiting list please contact Anne Taylor. For the Springfield Dinner/Dance and New Year rallies, use the specific form for each rally. Both these rallies require full payment at the time of booking. Sue Wainfleet Rally: 26 vans attended the rally with visitors from Yorkshire and Anglia on a sunny afternoon. The rally was opened by the chairman who welcomed the visitors and hoped the weather kept fine for the weekend (unfortunately it didn’t with occasional downpours). Bingo was played and then Paul had prepared a quiz and raffle tickets were on sale. Saturday was a free day to venture into Skegness or visit the local pubs in Wainfleet. Robin organised a game of boules for members. In the evening there was a quiz and then music was provided by Kelly which got a few dancing. Sunday there was a coffee morning and chat and due to rain being forecast the American Supper was bought forward. It was a super spread and everyone joined in. The American Supper raised £48 for the East Midlands Charity. In the evening after the downpour lawn darts was played and the winner “Nanna” Pauline was presented with a magnificent trophy (all of 2 inches high) by the chairman. Monday members had a coffee get together then a free day. In the evening Barbara did a music quiz . The chairman thanked everyone for coming to the rally and hoped they had had a lovely time. He also thanked Barbara, Robin, Anne and Paul for delivering a fantastic rally. Yvonne Welbourn Rally: 16 vans attended this rally in the lovely little village of Welbourn. Members were welcomed by the stewards Gordon, Linda, Dave and Mandy and were blessed with good weather. Friday evening bingo played then a cheese and cracker supper followed by cornflake cakes. Gordon and Linda then entertained members with quizzes which took about 10 tie

GROUP NEWS to find a winner which was Sue’s team. On Saturday some members caught the buses into Lincoln or Newark and some found the pub to have lunch. In the afternoon Dave and Mandy arranged an axe throwing competition (not as dangerous as it sounds – plastic axes), which was won by Steve and Kev. Very entertaining, lots of laughs. Saturday evening Kath celebrated her birthday and brought everyone cake. Happy birthday Kath. We then played a few games of Last Man Standing hosted by Paul won by Graham and Jane. Dave and Mandy then organised a game of Snatch. DJ Dave then played music to dance to. Sunday at coffee morning the raffle drawn by Jane then the chairman thanked the stewards for a fantastic rally. Jane informed members that Teddy had returned safe and sound from a night out in Lincoln. Yvonne Upcoming rallies: 3-5 November at Collingham Cricket Club, Dale Lane, Collingham, Notts. EAST WESSEX Ringwood carnival was the main attraction of our rally at Ringwood. Many seemed to think that the carnival was even better than previous years, with some returning in the evening for a second viewing, whilst others tried their luck with deck shuffle organised by Mitch. Pete provided the background music; Sandra organised cakes and tea; Val and Lyn did the raffle. Many thanks to all who helped out with running the rally when hosts Diane and Roger unexpectedly had to return home on Saturday morning. St Cross Cricket ground in Winchester was a new venue for our group and 14 East Wessex vans plus 12 visitors decided to try it out. The weather was good and once again, Mick, king of cupcakes, had been busy baking, to everyone’s great delight. During the day quite a few wandered over to the Michaelmas fair held in St Cross hospital. Alan and Mary entertained the group with singing which all enjoyed and Mary hosted another of her fiendish quizzes, which soon got heads scratching. A cream tea, a few rounds of the ever popular card bingo and a raffle rounded off the activities at the rally. Our secretary sends her apologies to any new East Wessex member for the delay in sending out a welcome letter and rally programme. Our rally programme for the rest of the year can be found on our website and you will be very welcome to join us. ESSEX 1-3 September at Pleshey Village Hall was hosted by Pam and Malcolm Filmer and co-hosted by Nick and Sue Rogers. This was a themed rally: A Tramps Ball. We had a good turn out, Friday afternoon we sat out in the sun and had a chat and a drink. At 4pm Friday there was a pizza van in the pub car park which was very nice. Friday evening we had a catch up with friends with background music, we had a game of bingo, and sold raffle tickets. Saturday daytime people sat out in the sun and some of us went down the pub for a sit in the garden and had a pint. Saturday evening was our Tramps Ball, we had a tramps parade, there was some really funny outfits, people put a lot of thought into their outfits, especially one lady, our Rita, she went one stage further and in the evening made a bed underneath one of the tables, it was hilarious. We also had a disco with the music supplied by myself. Sunday morning we had a get together at 10am in the hall for tea and coffee and a chat about our next rally. Another very successful rally. Grange Farm, 15-18 September was hosted by Nigel and Barbara and co-hosts Nick and Sue. Rally started at 1pm Friday, we sat out in the sun and had a catch up with friends. Some of us went up the Thorpe sports and social club for a drink as there was a pizza van in the carpark. We then went back to the rally for background music by Nigel and Barbara took the rally fees. Saturday some people ventured out to Clacton, Frinton and Walton for a walk and something to eat. The weather was beautiful for our get together at 4pm which included hot dogs for everyone washed down by a refreshing glass of pimms. This was all kindly supplied and paid for by Nigel and Barbara. We sold raffle tickets and played a game of bingo then another fun game of music bingo which led the evening onto dancing and chatting until late. Sunday morning we drew the raffle and had coffee, biscuits and chat. As there is a good choice of pubs nearby most people went out for Sunday lunch then we all met up again for chat and drinks into the evening. Monday morning people made their journeys home. A good time was had by all. Nick Rogers Upcoming rallies: 3-5 November at Venture 2000 Centre CO11 2JE. Starts: 2pm. >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 31

GROUP NEWS ISLE OF WIGHT Thankfully we have had some good weather for our recent rallies. Members enjoyed fine weather and good views at South Thorness Farm. Cheryl and Andrew were our hosts for this rally and provided some quizzes to entertain us. The men won the boules game this time but only by one point. We were a small select group but this did not detract from the enjoyment of the rally. The rally at Fakenham Farm was a new venue for us which was organised at short notice by our rally officer after our proposed venue was cancelled due to a wet field. The weather was kind to us again. Ann and Phil were our hosts for the weekend and kept us entertained with her usual interesting and varied activities.

KENT 14-18 September – Kent group welcomed 13 vans to Sandwich Lakes, seven from Kent and six from Sussex. Thursday was a casual day setting up and relaxing whilst on Friday some went to Ramsgate and Canterbury, others made good use of the weather and went fishing. John Beeke from Sussex managed to catch a 26lb+ fish but had to deploy a bit of help to get it out! Late Friday afternoon we met up for a Pimms and a chat watching the sun go down. Saturday afternoon we had the Cornhole Challenge with couples trying to get as many points within three rounds. Winners were Doug and Dave under the direction of Shiela! The obligatory Sunday morning coffee was shared with those who stayed with the weekend quiz being won by Mark and Jackie! This was Dave and Angie’s first hosting adventure and wanted to say a special thanks to everyone for making it a great weekend. Well done Dave and Angie! Unfortunately, our rally at the Blackbird and Thrush Public House, East Peckham, on 22-24 September was cancelled due to the low numbers that had booked. LANCASHIRE Forty ‘vans met at Victoria Park, Southport on a very hot Thursday in readiness for the Airshows on Saturday and Sunday. We met in the event tents for Carole’s quiz and Dean’s music, which he played each evening. Friday we had a free day. Lots went into the town which was very busy. At 6pm we met by the Lifeboat Station to present a cheque for £3,000 which we had collected for our nominated charity, The Southport Offshore Rescue Trust. Then several of their volunteers took us in groups around the new building, explaining everything. Then back to our camp for bingo and Bobby’s quiz, which always causes ructions and laughter. Ending the night with music. Of course, airshow day dawns cloudy and although still warm the cloud hadn’t cleared enough for The Red Arrows performance. They did manage a fly past around 2pm. Most of the show continued as listed on the programme with some spectacular performances. The evening started with music, then Take Your Pick and Carole’s quiz. As some were leaving on Sunday, we all joined hands for Best of Friends. >>

GROUP NEWS Sunday was still warm but a little cloudy. We met in the event tents for coffee morning where Lisa welcomed two pairs of new members with a welcome plaque. Winners of the bonus ball were paid, as well as those who won the raffle. Lisa thanked all the helpers as well as the hosts and wished everyone a safe onward journey. The rally continued with a second airshow, the Red Arrows not on the programme otherwise similar to Saturday’s content. The second rally of September was at Warton CC. Friday evening Lisa opened the rally with domestics. Then bingo with presenter Allan. The room was divided in half so that the two teams earned points over the weekend the teams being named The Best Team and The Very Best Team! Lisa then presented her Country & Western quiz and points given to both teams. Dean played music to the end of the night. Saturday dawned with an early committee meeting. This was followed with some shopping for food for a surprise buffet (compliments of her husband) to celebrate Sue Johnson’s birthday. At 2pm there was line dancing in the hall. Those who participated scored points for their team. Then the room was cleared so that the buffet could be prepared. 6.30 and most were already in the hall in readiness to shout ‘surprise’ on Sue’s appearance. There were some tears! She had no idea that hubby Don had arranged the party for her. Everyone was dressed Country & Western style. After the buffet two new sheriffs (Bobby & Rob) who happened to be in town paid a visit. Sherriff Bobby delivered a group quiz whilst Rob kept order, especially with Mark Powell and friends who were also celebrating his birthday! Line dancing followed then a break for Take Your Pick, jackpot was won by Sue. The night was danced away Warton style! Sunday coffee morning and Lisa closed the rally with thanks to the hosts, Mel, Sandra, Dean and herself! She bid all a safe journey home. The raffle was paid out and the winner of the bonus ball was Sue! Oh! The winner of the team competition? A draw! Scribe Alma Upcoming rallies: 10-12 November at Hoghton Village Hall PR5 0SG. Bookable. 17-19 November at Park High School BB8 7DP. 5pm start.

MOTORCYCLE 16-21 September at Trigon Farm, near Wareham. Hosts Martin and Noreen parked up 15 vans on this lush green field surrounded by trees. We were all given a polystyrene aeroplane and told that we could modify them so as to win a prize for the furthest distance flown later that evening. The hosts shared bunches of grapes from their garden with us all. What a delight! We all gathered in the early evening for the Flight Competition. We had a lot of fun launching our planes and trying to beat each other. But Simon beat everyone ‘hands down’. We went for our first ride out on Monday to Poole for lunch. Our route took us past Corfe Castle, through Swanage and Studland. Then ending up at the Swanage ferry crossing, to Sandbanks. Tuesday’s rain kept us all in our vans

until the evening when six bikes braved the drizzle and rode to bike night at Poole Quay. A very popular event in the area generally but the weather kept most away. Not the best weather to ride in and after refreshments we headed back to site. Wednesday was another wet day but we managed to have a quiz in our vans via WhatsApp. Joint winners were Pam/Dave and Lynn/Nick. We left site the next day for Burley in the New Forest. 2128 September, 20 vans attended this rally which was hosted by Jane/Sean and Steve/Suzie B. Jane welcomed us all to site dressed as a witch. She even had a broomstick and a cat. The fun continued in the evening with a team game. Girls versus boys of course and was declared a draw. The next day we had a ride out to the Sammy Miller Museum. We were allowed to park our bikes together in the courtyard at the front of the museum. Photos were taken of bikes and our group (see photo). We spent the next few hours checking out the museum and petting Farm. There were a lot of bikes to look at. That night we each gave away 3 x10p pieces in a dice game until one person (Cathy) was left in the game and she won them all! On Saturday we all did our own thing and in the evening we all went to the local pub to see a band. Suzie B arranged a visit to the Burley Inn for a Sunday roast the next day. On Monday 17 bikes had a Ride Out to Mudiford Quay. We stopped at Keyhaven for look see, then Milford on Sea ‘Cliff Top’ for photos ending at Mudiford Quay for lunch. Then back to site to pack up ready to move on to our AGM rally.

NENE VALLEY For those attending the AGM at Cogenhoe Bowls Club, please do not forget your membership cards – no cards, no admittance to the AGM! The September rally at Stoke Bruerne took place in the heatwave. There were 27 vans, with Nene Valley joined by visitors from Chiltern, Anglia and East Midlands. It was a difficult journey, as the roads hereabouts are closed for the building of a new bypass around Roade. Most of the traffic seemed to be re-routed along the narrow road by our site, so wherever else they went, the vans did eventually finish up finding our field. >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 37

GROUP NEWS The highlight of Friday evening was the arrival of the fish and chip van, local people obviously track the van's progress, and arrived in the field tucked behind the van, to join in the fight to be first in the queue. The food was worth it. On Saturday Paul from Anglia booked a narrowboat trip up to and through the Blisworth Tunnel, the second longest in the country. 20 members enjoyed the voyage on the Indian Chief, finishing back at the Boat Inn, a good reason for cold refreshment. We also had cake in the afternoon. On Sunday morning the raffle was drawn. This was organised by Pat, thanks to her and to those who donated prizes. There was a quiz on knowledge of Stoke Bruerne, picked up as we wandered about, and the answers to Tonys' quiz. After that a lot of us went back to the village for Sunday lunch and didn't do much for the rest of the day, due to full tummies. It was home time on Monday, members said they had enjoyed the rally, despite the unusual heat. Thanks to stewards Mick, Tony and Kathleen, to Pat and Paul and everyone else that pitched in to help. After a very doubtful start if we would go ahead, due to the recent heavy rain, and despite numerous vans cancelling, we were able to welcome 28 vans to our Cranford Steam Fayre Meet. Members came from as far afield as Northern Counties, S&WW, Kent, Essex, Chiltern, East Mids and of course our regular friends from Anglia. Nene Valley just managed to repel boarders with one extra van from Nene Valley – thanks to new members Maggie and Ian arriving. However we weren't able to prevent Micks' Money-Maker (dip) prize money escaping North with Yasmin and Tommy, and yet again to Anglia, to Adrian and Gill. At least Yasmin's money was invested wisely in a locally distilled gin! The weather held off generally with brisk winds, and members were seen returning with all sorts of goodies supplied by the local stalls. This is now the major show in the area, with over 120 trucks alone to view, funfair, steamers, tractors galore, cars, motorcycles, numerous food stalls and the always visited Steam Up Bar, in fact something for everyone. The weekend was dampened somewhat with the sudden and sad passing of Scampi, a very much loved doggy of Tony and Carol and the NV group. Safe travels Scampi. I would like to thank Alan, Peggy and Pat for their cheery welcome and help in parking up the vans, at times a little challenging. Also for the organising and supplying of copious amounts of biscuits for the coffee afternoon and morning. Wheeltapper Upcoming rallies: 10-12 November at The Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth Airfield, Sibbertoft Road, Husbands Bosworth, Leics., LE17 6JJ. Cost £12 pupn. We are hoping to provide hookup, for which there will be a charge if taken (approx £10 per w/end). 1-4 December at Barnstones Christmas Weekend, Great Bourton, OX17 1QU. Cost £14 pupn + rally fee. Electric £4 per night if required. Cost of dinner etc. TBC. Limited number of vans.

NORTHERN COUNTIES Hello everyone. Following on from our successful Bents Park rally, some of the members moved directly on to another 5 night rally at Alnwick Rugby Club from 6-10 September, which was hosted by George Jobson and John Ternent. We had 34 vans with 13 visitors from various groups. The weather was fair and on the Saturday morning George organised a walk to Alnmouth and back, with the obligatory stop at a pub for refreshments. In the evening everyone got their windbreaks together and had an enjoyable gettogether. 22-25 September we were at Annstead Farm, Beadnell, and was hosted by Mark and Sue Lang with 19 vans attending; we welcomed new first time visitors Kevin and Margaret Marsden from Lancs, Northern Counties new members James and Margaret Martin. This location is right on the coast ideal for walks along the beach to Seahouses and Bamburgh (for the more energetic members!). The weather was good although the windbreaks were once again in use for the Saturday evening and Mark and Sue entertained with a pass the parcel game. Finally, our AGM has now taken place, 29 September to 1 October, at Redcar Racecourse, hosted by the Committee. We had 41 vans, with two visitors from Lancashire and four from Yorkshire. The Friday evening was just a meet and greet in the room. Unfortunately when Mark and Sue Lang arrived, Mark realised he had left the new microphones at home and had to turn around to go back and get them, sadly for Mark, the A19 was then closed on his way back so took him longer than it should have! The AGM was held on the Saturday morning. The current Committee all stood down but were re-elected, together with four new members. The AGM was followed by the members' meeting. Our Committee is now: Chairman Dave Hird; Secretary Tony Edwards; Treasurer Carole Brown, Rally Officer Susan Lang; Vice Chairman Paula Edwards; and the following new Committee members: Peter and Linda Ridgers, Pam Brack and George Jobson. Susan Collingwood has kindly agreed to be our Independent Accounts Auditor – thanks ever so much Sue, and John Ternent will carry on with the role of Safety Officer. On Saturday evening there was a complimentary buffet and live entertainment from the duo Chapperz! and they were very entertaining. Sunday morning we had coffee and the raffle was drawn and dues were paid. We hope to see you at a rally soon. Don’t forget to check our website for rally information and important updates: www.northerncounties.co.uk. Paula & Tony Edwards Upcoming rallies: 3-6 November at Blucher Social Club – this rally has limited space (max 25 vans) therefore is bookable. 24-26 November is Christmas Party Weekend – this is now at Tynedale Rugby Club, Corbridge (on hard standing). This will be a bookable rally and will include a meal. Please watch the website for further details and booking information.

GROUP NEWS NORTHERN IRELAND The Fermanagh lakes lured some 60 motorhomes to Enniskillen. Thursday evening was an opportune time for members to meet, re-acquaint and “chew the fat”. Friday amid the showers many took the short walk to Enniskillen town centre for lunch, a few bevvies or window shopping. Late evening of Friday despite incessant rain, Erne Vintage Car Club and friends amassed some 300 vehicles to parade through town, many of great vintage, all beautifully restored and presented. As they wound their way through town I spotted some of our group members taking part; there was Robbie Coalter with his impressive BLMC Maxi of circa 1978 being expertly driven by daughter Lindsey, then a short time later Raymond and Ida Elliott made their way past with the obligatory toot of the horn of their 1987 black Ford Capri 2.8i. There was a short delay before someone announced “here’s the Mayor coming”. It wasn’t the Mayor but I could understand the mistake – out of the twilight and rain emerged a handsome Rover 2000, white and as opulent as when it left the factory in 1968. The vehicle was superb but when I noted the regal and chauffeured occupants my eyes stood out on stalks, it was none other than our very own Roy and Barbara Smith; we haven’t had the pleasure of their company for some time due to illness which is thankfully being overcome; we look forward to their return to our group. Thanks to Victor for calling the bingo on Friday evening and the raffle on Saturday night. Then we danced the night away to music ably provided by David Kane. Sunday morning we assembled for refreshments, Chairman's address etc. during which we learned Irene and Robbie Hewitt had achieved 26 years of wedded bliss, congratulations. We had new members to welcome: Victor and Florence Wilson collected their forms on Friday and joined us next day. William Lynas and Jacqueline McDowell also returned to “the fold”. Valerie and Martin Whitesmith also warmly welcomed as was Sheila Spiers whom, although a longstanding member, we rarely see as she now resides in Spain, haste ye back Sheila. Birthdays: Selma McMullan had quietly celebrated another birthday, it was pointless being so secretive Selma, there’s always someone who knows. John McClune and Joyce McMillen were two others who’ve attained another year. Denise Waddell received the quiz prize whilst Christine McCullough and Pauline Grant got lucky with the entry number draw. In closing David (Chairman) extended best wishes to Cynthia Willis who became unwell at this rally, also to Betty Stewart with her impending operation, we wish you well ladies and hope for speedy recovery. Thus ended another memorable rally, our thanks to all who worked hard on our behalf, it was very enjoyable. Dessie Ross Omagh, 1-3 September. A brilliant sunny weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by members from 45 vans. Experienced hosts Thelma and David Kyle-Ewing, ably assisted by Iris and Bobby McEwan, welcomed members on Friday afternoon. Several helpers had the vans expertly parked in the spacious

grounds of the Gibson Primary School. After members were welcomed by the Chairman, bingo caller Victor McFadden got hearts pumping with his inimitable style. Members had a very enjoyable social evening and several went back to their vans with prizes. On Saturday afternoon some went to Omagh town for retail therapy while others relaxed in the glorious sunshine. A few members went exploring on their bicycles, while others fired up their barbecues. There was an exhausting night of non-stop dancing to the versatile and talented musician Paul Ralph. With songs to suit all musical tastes the dancefloor was always full. Later on in the evening the raffle provided a break from the dancing. With generous donations £225 was raised for the Club. On Sunday morning members met up for tea and coffee. New members Nicky and Kevin Murray were given a hearty welcome, while Jeanette and Rachel Tomlin, Mildred and Kenneth Dickson were warmly welcomed back after an absence. Birthday wishes were extended to Marissa Robinson and Isaac Grant and congratulations to Claire and Seamus Cushenan who arrived in their new van and were celebrating 51 years of marriage. A special golden decorated cake was presented to Chairman David Kyle-Ewing and his wife Thelma by Ruth Ross in recognition of their 50 years of marriage. Tom and Agnes Adair were also congratulated on their 54th wedding anniversary, sharing the same date as the Kyle-Ewings. Arlene Campbell was the lucky person to win the number plate draw. The popular quiz which was based on interesting facts about Tyrone attracted a huge entry. Six correct entries were placed in a draw and Sam Arlow’s winning entry was pulled from the pile. After the presentations the Chairman reminded members that committee nomination forms were available and he encouraged members to consider being nominated. Albert Coulter

NWM&NW There was a total of 27 units for our visit to Lady Heyes Holiday Park with all facilities. Vans were situated mainly in three groups but there was nowherw to gather socially. The weather was somewhat changeable though that didn't stop members from exploring the local area, on foot, by bike or even taxi for additional retail therapy. The various emporiums onsite selling antiques, sweets, textiles etc, were popular too. Darren and Shirley set off for a walk and discovered a pub with no beer, just a tad disappointing though Darren had a bottle of beer or two. I guess that's not quite the same! The onsite bar and cafe did a good trade with many members dropping in for lunch, evening meals, oh and watching the football. Some went to play bingo but failed to win any of the cash prizes. Elaine was a good samaritan, while dog walking in the early hours when she assisted a couple who were locked out of their "pod". She made sure they were warm in the laundry room with seats, blankets and hot drinks until reception opened. I think they were most grateful. Well done Elaine. >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 39

SCOTTISH Greetings to all. Our first rally in September was 8-11 at Railway Farm, Logierait, a peaceful site in a very picturesque setting. We welcomed new members Mark and Jackie Jameson and hope to meet up again on future rallies. Most people went to Pitlochry by bus to visit the Highland Games, town was certainly packed. Saturday evening Simon and Valerie put on a quiz, much of it by torchlight as the days are getting shorter. Sunday three Quest rooms were erected and joined together as the heavens opened. Keith and Mary put on a good spread of cheese and wine to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Spirits were high and laughter in large measure playing a truth and lie games. Unfortunately Sandy and Dorothy had to watch their van leave on a breakdown truck on Monday morning as it had broken down as they parked in the field on Friday. The second rally was 22-25 September at the car park for the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine. Had an advantage of being behind the Puffer Cafe, a good place for coffee and cakes or light lunches. We had a coffee afternoon on Saturday in very pleasant sunshine, welcome after many of us had been for long walks along the coastal path. Most attendees went for lunch Sunday afternoon at the The Ship restaurant along the shore. Think we all agreed that the food was very good. By the time you read this we will have had the Scottish group AGM and elected our new committee. An extra rally has been arranged at Foresterseat campsite near Forfar for nights of 10-11 November so that we can have a high tea meal on the 10th in the on site restaurant. Bookings need to by made via the Rally Officer as the site is officially closed and they have kindly agreed to allow us in 40 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2023

those nights. Cost will be £17 pupn including electric hookup and shower block. Have a good winter folks. JanB

SEVERN VALLEY We held our Group Holiday Rally on 23-30 September at Park Dean Resort in Westbay, Dorset. In total 25 vans attended with 21 Severn Valley members along with two from NWM&NW, one from East Midlands along with one from S&W Wales attending. Luckily we missed the worst of storm Agnes and everything remained standing. We would like to thank Jeremy for putting on the cocktails and party to celebrate Rose’s birthday. Sadly we lost Roger Cutler in September. Roger was a long term supporter of the Severn Valley Group and will be missed. Upcoming rallies: Christmas Rally at Orleton Village Hall on 24-26 November. This is a bookable event and there are limited spaces left. New Years Rally at Ledbury Rugby Club details to follow.

SWP This year's AGM is nearly here; venue is Wooda Farm Holiday Park, Bude, EX23 9HU, from 10-13 November (3 nights). The AGM will take place on Friday at 8pm – please remember to have your current membership card to show on entry, together with your emailed AGM pack. The committee have arranged live entertainment for Saturday evening. We have use of the barn throughout the rally and do please remember it is not well heated, so bring blankets and warm clothes along. Don’t forget the Christmas party rally at Cofton Holiday Park, EX6 8RP, £19 pupn (EHU to be purchased direct with the site) is now a 4 night rally commencing Thursday 7th December and our Christmas party night is Friday 8th December, Christmas raffle on Sunday 10th December. Bookings by email only to: swpeninsula@ themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk. There are a couple of September rallies to report on. The first was at Carlyon Bay where Margaret & Bob Phillimore hosted from 8-13 September. 23 units attended (one Yorkshire; one Sussex; one South & West Wales; one West Country; one Kent; five Severn Valley and 13 SWP). Activities were meet & greet, Molki (Severn Valley won both games), 13 card game, cream tea at the beach, boys v girls quiz (team captains were from Severn Valley, two coffee mornings, as there arrivals and departures over several days. Ralliers displayed pictures of TV programmes and the standard was very good. Many ralliers made use of the regular bus service and others walked to various places. It was a successful rally with lots of laughter and banter and good interaction. Everyone praised the site and its location. The second rally was a long-awaited return to Porth Beach, hosted by Jackie and Stuart Mosley who report that despite Storm Agnes's visit to Cornwall 23 vans attended: 15 SWP; five West Country; one Chiltern and two Yorkshire.

GROUP NEWS The weather was kind to us over our stay. Friday's meet and greet along with the wine and cheese was enjoyed by everyone. Some campers joined the quiz on Friday night at the Mermaid pub across the road from the site. Saturday some walked into Newquay or caught the bus to Padstow. We had a couple games of Molki thanks to Bob and Margaret for organising it. Sunday we had a coffee morning with results of the film competition and cake quiz, then some enjoyed the Sunday roast in the Mermaid. A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped us during this rally. Upcoming rallies: 10-13 November at Wooda Farm, Bude, EX23 9HU – AGM. 7-11 December at Cofton Holiday Park, Dawlish, EX6 8RP – Christmas Party. 30 December-2 January at Trevarrian Holiday Park, Newquay, TR8 4AQ – New Year Bash.

S&W WALES Hi everyone, autumn is well and truly here and the colours on the trees are really beautiful but the leaf sweeping seems a daily task here. I hope you are all keeping warm now that the weather is getting colder. Pembrey Country Park – 22-25 September. The annual visit to Pembrey Country Park was hosted by Jeff, Heulwen, Barrie and John the Pipe. They welcomed 37 vans including four from Severn Valley and first timers Martin & Doretta, Chris & Mike, David & Ros, Derek & Leanne and Phil & Sally. The weather was not too good on Friday but had improved by Saturday so that everyone could enjoy the Pembrey Steam Fair which is well worth a visit. As the weather forecast for Sunday was poor we had our coffee get-together on Saturday evening. Sue won the lucky van and our Chair, Betty, won four of the raffle prizes! Well done Betty. The entertainment, a visit to the Horse Races, was organised by Barrie. The jockeys were Betty, Michaela, Martin, Keith, Sue, and Jeff with the winner being Betty – Well done again Betty. The weather on Sunday was not too good but many revisited the show before making their way home. Listed below are the excellent forthcoming rallies – several are bookable so make sure you book early by contacting

SUSSEX Hopefully you are all well and eager following our AGM at Willingdon where the new committee will have successfully been formed. We wish them well and with everyone’s support, look forward to the next year. September had two very pleasurable rallies. The first was at Isfield, hosted by Peter and Anne Baker, longtime Sussex members and also volunteers for the Lavender Line Railway, which made our visit even more memorable. We had the opportunity for rides on the old trains, quizzes in the Station Buffet room as well as pizzas, cream teas, pub meals and trips to Lewes and Uckfield. Many thanks to Peter and Anne for providing such a lovely time for us. Also thanks to the visitors from Anglia, Chiltern, West Wessex, NWM&NW and Kent as well as our own group, making this an enjoyable and fun filled weekend. Our second rally was at one of our favourite sites, The Barn at Lancing. Weather was a bit patchy, with rain showers, sometimes heavy, at the beginning of the five day rally. Our hosts were Jeane and Mick Boyce, who coped magnificently with the steady stream of vans arriving throughout and providing quiz sheets to tax our brains. Jim and Jackie Spring helped with the raffle. Alan and Mary Campbell gave us an early evening musical performance, which got everyone toe tapping, singing along and helping with percussion instruments. Three more Sussex Loyalty Scheme vouchers were presented, making a total so far of 10. Upcoming rallies: Seal (Bunn) Leisure site at Selsey on 9-14 November, pre booked, payments direct to the site. Contact Carole Bennett or Marilyn Harris if you have any queries or check Sussex MCC Facebook page. Christmas rally at Thomas a Becket School, Worthing, BN14 7PR on 15-17 December, bookings taken by Marilyn Harris, Rally Officer, with a deposit of £20, professional DJ and festive activities. New Year’s Rally at St Richards, Bexhill on 29 December-1 January (closing time 4pm due to school reopening on the 2nd). Bookings to be taken again by Marilyn, with a deposit; Rocking Robins to entertain us on the Saturday, with the ever popular Mandy providing activities and music to see us into the New Year. Please check the MCC website or our Facebook page for more details. >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 41

GROUP NEWS WEST COUNTRY Lady’s Mile 12-17 September . We had 56 vans attend this rally : 25 West Country, 7 Avon, 5 SWP, 2 Nene Valley, 1 Yorkshire, 1 Sussex, 2 East Wessex, 2 West Wessex, 4 Severn Valley, 7 S&W Wales. On Tuesday the weather was great when most arrived for setting up. We then all met up in the clubhouse in the afternoon for our welcome meeting where we were introduced to our hosts Jan, Derek, Sam and Tim and we were told what we could expect on the rally. We also enjoyed cheese and crackers and old friends met up and new friendships were made. On Wednesday we had a few more arrive. Every evening in the club house Lady’s Mile had their own bingo so a few of us joined in with others at the site to play and even a few were lucky enough to even win as well. We also had access to their gym and indoor swimming pool and some also used the hairdressers. The weather had been really kind to us this week apart from Sunday when it rained while we packed away but we can’t have it all now can we. During the days people either went out for the day into Dawlish Warren or Dawlish or even further afield or stayed on site and went for a swim or just stayed at their vans and had a relaxing time. We hope that everyone enjoyed their stay with us and we hope to see you all again at a next rally. Upcoming rallies: 30 November-3 December is our Christmas rally at Riverside.

WEST WESSEX The Parley Glade Rally, hosted by Sue and Chum and assisted by Bet and Mike, was attended by ten motorhomes, nine from West Wessex and one from Nene Valley. On the Friday afternoon, Sue and Bet provided home-made cakes and everyone gathered together to celebrate Sue and Chum's wedding anniversary. Saturday was a fine day and ideal for the games day with boules, horseshoes, lawn darts and putting. Most people played whilst the others spectated (and offered lots of helpful advice I’m sure!) This was followed by a fish and chip supper and some games of card bingo in the hall. Sunday was a quiet day to complete a lovely, friendly and relaxed weekend. Thank you to Sue for this information and the photos. The very popular Christmas party weekend will again be at Herston Yard Farm Caravan and Camping Park, Swanage, BH19 3DJ from 30 November-3 December. The cost is £90 or £75 for single occupancy. There is also the option to stay for a fourth night at an extra cost of £20. This is a full facilities site and includes electric hook up, water and waste drain on each hardstanding pitch. The clubhouse will be open every evening. There will be quizzes, bingo, karaoke and disco. The Christmas party, on the Saturday evening, is our opportunity to dress up, enjoy a hot and cold buffet and then dance until late. It’s rumoured Father Christmas may be in attendance again this year. Sunday carvery is also available and bookable and payable to this site on arrival. Please see the West Wessex MCC page or Herston Yard Farm website for detailed directions to this site. Your host, Maria, is taking bookings on 07887 393137. Numbers are limited and early booking is advised . Bookings are also being taken for the New Year celebrations at Saint Michaels Middle School, Wimborne 217AB by your hosts Gill and Andy on 07746 058606. Number are again limited so book early to avoid disappointment. The cost is £75 and £55 for single occupancy to include all food and entertainment, on each night of the rally.

GROUP NEWS Saturday morning the sun was out again, Neil Huggon from NC organised a nice walk around the area followed by a “compulsory” drink stop on the way back! Others walked into Leyburn or caught the little train or bus. Saturday evening everyone gathered around the host’s van again. Pat and Malcolm Collins won the Bird Quiz that had been given everyone to do on the day of arriving. Followed by another general knowledge quiz which Jo and Neil Huggon from NC won. Sunday, another hot day, there was a classic car gathering across the road at the Auction House so a few went across to reminisce on which car they used to have. There was a good thunderstorm in the afternoon but it was still very warm. A few sat around the van in the evening for a good natter. Monday was pack up and leave day. Good time was had by all. 14-19 September at Bridlington Royal Yacht Club. 30 vans in total over the 5 days. 17 Yorkshire with three first timers, one Nene Valley, two Severn Valley, three Anglia, one West Wessex, three East Mids, one NW Mids, one Northern Counties, one Lancs. Thursday’s weather started cloudy then the sun came out for a lovely afternoon, ready for Malcolm and Carol to greet the ralliers with the help of Mike and Elaine. Friday was another sunny day with most members walking into Bridlington or catching the park ‘n’ ride. Everyone gathered around the host’s van early evening and Paul our Chairman welcomed everyone and gave a run-down of vans. Carol gave a general knowledge quiz to keep the grey cells working before the darkness closed in and everyone retired for the night. Saturday was another good day again, members went into town, went off exploring or just sat in the sunshine. A couple of our members even had a go with their paddle boards on a local lake. It was too cold to sit out in the evening so most of the ralliers just relaxed in their own vans. Sunday saw half the members leave, the dreaded 4 letter word loomed (work). Monday was very mixed weatherwise and Tuesday the weather turned very wet and windy so most members were away fairly early. A good long relaxing weekend.

29 September-1 October at Riverside Campsite, Cononley. Despite the weather forecast we had a good attendance of 12 vans this weekend. Friday turned out to be a pleasant day enabling host Chris to book everyone in without getting wet. Saturday started off fine in the morning but the rain came late afternoon. This didn’t stop the ralliers venturing out into Skipton or for a ramble around the area and exploring the local hostelries where they were made to feel very welcome. Sadly we have been informed of the recent death of Dave Boric (3 Dog Dave). Our condolences and thoughts are with Carol and family at this sad time. RIP. Past member June Finkill also recently passed away. Our condolences to Malcolm and family at this sad time. RIP. It is with regret we have just been notified by Annette of the passing of Tommy Morton, also known as Tattoo Tommy. Our condolences go to Annette and family at this sad time RIP. THE

ULTIMATE

TO

GUIDE winter touring

Frances and Michael Howorth brave frosty mornings and foggy days taking their motorcaravan winter touring in the UK.

M

otorcaravan insurance companies, vehicle storage specialists, and data released by the DLVA, all point to one thing – we are using our motorhomes and campervans more than ever before during the winter months. In times before Covid, there was a tendency for motorcaravans to be laid up over the colder months, but now, clearly that trend is reversing. More of us are staying mobile in the winter. Our view is, we have paid for 12

months road tax, and year's worth of insurance, so we may as well use it and enjoy many advantages winter camping has to offer. Not everyone agrees. The nay-sayers suggest that with so many attractions and campsites closed for winter, it is not worth keeping a van on the road. They argue that with fewer daylight hours to enjoy and difficult road conditions, safety can be an issue. Others cite damp and condensation inside their vehicle as a problem,

46 MOTOR CARAVANNER November 2023

suggesting that it makes it hard to dry wet clothes. Now we know, from our early experiences, that it can be cold in a campervan, especially if you don’t have an electrical hook up, or on board self-fuelled heating system. We also know that in very cold weather, water tanks will need to be insulated and that with shorter days, our solar panels will not supply as much power in the winter as they do in summer. The trick is to find a work-around for those potential

THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE TOURING IN WINTER If you are planning on going on tour in the colder months, then these are some of the best things for you to keep in mind: If your campervan is prone to condensation, then you should ensure you wipe your windows frequently. Also, move your bedding and seating away from the walls and raise them as this lets warm air circulate beneath them. Ensure that your mobile phone is fully charged at all times and keep your emergency numbers handy. Since you will be spending lots of time in your camper, take along a car charger with you. Make sure there is antifreeze in the engine. Also, purchase a high-grade window wash antifreeze to prevent ice formation in the window-washer nozzles and hoses and unit tank. Test your car battery and ensure you have a leisure battery in case of emergencies. Ensure you drive carefully when you are in the snow. Monitor your speed and accelerate and decelerate slowly to prevent skids. Top tips courtesy of Oaktree Motorhomes. www.omcmotorhomes.co.uk problems. So here are some of our top tips to keep you, warm, cosy and safe, while enjoying your wintertime wanderings. Before we leave home, we carry out a few extra pre-departure checks, to make sure the nasty winter weather-witch does not cast a spell on us. Tyres are first! Check

the pressure and if you need to, change over to winter tyres. We always top up windscreen wash solution and ensure we use a winter strength to ensure the bottle and pipes do not freeze and split. We check the windscreen scraper and de-icing spray is close at hand. We recommend you check gas bottles

or in our case underslung LPG tanks. Wintertime is when you are more likely to call upon gas for heating and with auto gas getting harder to find, we don’t want to run out. We also pack our externally mountable insulated windscreen cover. We find they are much better at keeping down overnight condensation, than when we use our internal blinds. Inside the van we check our winter wardrobe, adding extra layers of clothing so we can always throw on another jumper. Make sure to also pack pyjamas and bed socks and throw in warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves for lovely walks when it is crispy cold outside. When it comes to bedding, keeping additional blankets in your van is important when temperatures drop. Consider flannel or fleece sheets, heated blankets and mattress pads, down comforters, and warm sleepwear including fleece or tech fabric base layers. They are all helpful when it comes to staying warm and snuggly overnight! On occasions you can even resort to wearing beanie caps to help keep our body heat up. When driving to your winter campsite, allow extra time for the journey. Cold conditions call for slower speeds. In poor weather we tend to keep to main roads making the assumption that they are more likely to be gritted more quickly than secondary roads. When we get to the site we always choose hard standing over grass in wet weather. Yes, we too have been stuck and needed a tractor to tow us out of a field! In freezing weather, we find >> November 2023 MOTOR CARAVANNER 47

that it is best to drain away grey wastewater, rather than have it go into a tank that can freeze and split. We use a collapsible bucket, under the waste outlet, figuring it’s easier to empty a frozen bucket, then deal with a frozen tank. One aspect of keeping comfortable when cold weather camping, is the creation of heat. The second part is retaining that warmth and not letting it wick away. Some vans are better insulated than others. But anything you can do to avoid heat waste and keep it inside the unit will help keep a comfortable temperature. Insulation is key in this regard. Pay attention to windows, skylights and vents. Poorly insulated, they can the biggest cause of heat loss. Insulated curtains can help, but covering windows with insulating material is extremely helpful and somewhat better at regulating heat. There are special foam inserts that fit windows and rooftop vents on the market. But a cheaper option maybe to use homemade foam pads or even, a tight-fitting cushion to help heat escaping upward through the vents. If you plan to stay parked up for a while, consider skirting around the vehicle. By insulating and keeping the wind and cold air out from underneath the van floor, you will enjoy a warmer interior. This action also helps protect vulnerable pipes from freezing. Hopefully, we have convinced you that it is possible to enjoy winter

As the days get shorter and nights get colder here are four simple recipes perfect for your winter travels

Winter

Warmers

LAMB HOTPOT

The perfect comfort dish for a cosy day in your 'van. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 1 hour Ingredients (Serves 3) 700g large potatoes, peeled 1 tbsp sunflower oil (extra for brushing) 1 large white onion, sliced 4 carrots, chopped into small pieces 12 lamb meatballs 450ml chicken gravy 2 bay leaves 2 thyme sprigs Method In a saucepan, boil the potatoes for 15 mins until par-boiled, then drain and leave to steam dry and cool.

CHICKEN & CHICKPEA CURRY

In a measuring jug, crumble the stock cube, add the ginger, paprika, coriander, medium curry powder and chilli powder and 400ml of boiling water. Stir until well mixed.

Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 25 minutes

Heat a little oil in a pan, stir in the onions and garlic and saute until slightly soft and browned. Pour in the spice mixture and bring to a boil.

What's more warming than a classic curry? This delicious and easy recipe will get your tastebuds tingling. Ingredients (Serves 4) 500g chicken 400g canned chickpeas 1 onion 3 garlic cloves 1 chicken stock cube 1 tsp ginger 2 tsp paprika 1 tsp coriander 2 tbsp medium curry powder ½ tsp chilli powder 400g basmati rice Method Dice the onion and finely chop the garlic. Chop the chicken into chunks.

Once boiling, add the chicken, stir and then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until cooked through. While the curry is cooking, add the basmati rice to a pan, cover with water and cook for 20 minutes or until soft. Drain as soon as the curry is cooked. Drain the chickpeas and add to the curry. Once everything is cooked through serve with the basmati rice.

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the onion until starting to soften. Add the carrot and cook for around 5 mins until tender. Tip the carrot and onions into a large oven-proof dish. Put the pan back over high heat. Fry the lamb meatballs until golden on the outside. Put the meatballs into the ovenproof dish, pour over the gravy and tuck in the bay leaves and thyme sprigs. Thinly slice the cooled potatoes and arrange over the top of the meatballs. Brush the potato with 1-2 tsp oil and add a good grinding of black pepper. Bake in the oven for 20-25 mins until the potatoes are tender and starting to become crisp at the edges.

Ingredients 4 tbsp plain flour 2 tbsp sugar 2 tbsp cocoa powder 3 tbsp milk 3 tbsp sunflower oil 1 tbsp chocolate chips ¼ tsp vanilla extract 1 egg

CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

While not one of the healthiest recipes, it is one of the quickest! Mug cakes are a special treat that’s perfect for that sweet craving – perhaps after a long day of walking or cycling. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 5 minutes

Method Add the flour, sugar and cocoa powder to a mug and stir well. Crack the egg into the mug and mix well, eliminating any lumps. Add the milk, sunflower oil, chocolate chips and vanilla extract and stir. Place the mug in the microwave for 3-4 minutes until the cake has risen. Remove and let the cake set for 1-2 minutes. Top with ice cream and cherries for added luxury, grab a spoon and eat!

LEEK & POTATO SOUP

This is always a favourite as it takes less than an hour to make and goes great with warm bread and butter. The key to this soup is to make sure it's seasoned properly, so make sure you taste as you go along. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 30 minutes Ingredients (Serves 4) 4 potatoes 2 leeks 1 onion 2 pints vegetable stock 150ml crème fraiche Salt Pepper Method Chop the onion, leeks and potatoes into small chunks. Heat some oil in a pan and add the onions, leeks and potatoes. Cook for 5 minutes until starting to soften. Add the vegetable stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Season with salt and pepper, then simmer the mixture for about 20 minutes until the vegetables are cooked all the way through. Using a hand blender, whizz the mixture until smooth (if you don't have a blender you can always serve your soup chunky!). Stir in the crème fraiche and heat through. Serve immediately with bread and butter.

A

ustralian Ashleigh Butler been travelling in campervans for over 15 years and lived fulltime in them for five years with her partner Jared, and later travelled with her two daughters. This book is based on those experiences. It is divided into four sections; the main body consists of over 65 recipes divided between the four seasons. These are ‘bookended’ (sorry!) by important info, tips and hints on designing a small campervan kitchen, essential equipment, pantry essentials, saving space

and reducing waste, plus some home-made essentials from natural ingredients such as mosquito repellent. The Small Kitchen Cook is richly-illustrated, and features clear, concise, user-friendly text. No recipe requires anything more than a twoburner hob and a surprising number of appealing dishes only requiring one source of heat…and some… none! Each dish is featured on a double-page spread, with a colour photograph of the completed dish on one page, and the ingredients and methodology on the other. Ash reinforces our own personal beliefs that food should healthy, wholesome, easy to prepare, have

a low ecological impact - and above all - be tasty and nutritious. Recipes are included for carnivores, pescatarians, vegetarians, vegans, and for those who ‘mix and match’. The only slight gap in coverage is a lack of recipes containing beef. However, beef can be used as a swap-out for other meats in many dishes, thus it’s not going to be a problem for those inspired by the dietary preferences of Desperate Dan. The fact that when asked to review this useful book, I read it from the beginning to the end – as one would a novel – rather than dipping ‘in-and-out’ as is the norm for cookbooks, indicates how engaging it really is. It is available from publishers Imray (similar books including Fire

welcome whether you’re a club member or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.
