ell, it hardly seems a short time since I was wishing you season’s greetings for Christmas and New Year and now many of you will have enjoyed a Burns Night celebration rally and be looking forwards to a Valentine’s weekend. Also, to look further ahead, don’t forget the National Rally in June, 60 years on plus two. This is a celebration of our Diamond Jubilee two years on that we were unable to celebrate due to the Covid. As a part of this rally we are asking Groups if they would volunteer to suggest and/or run some activities during the time. Please contact the National Rally Chair, Anne Taylor or secretary, Sue Pilkiw, if you can help. Warners are starting bookings for their trade shows. Don’t forget if you attend you should mark your application that you wish to camp with the Club. You will also get a discount for being a member. Here’s looking forward to a full and enjoyable year’s rallying ahead.

Marketing our Club
T
he Club has a stand at all of the Warner’s outdoor shows which is run by the Exhibition team. They are the ‘Face’ of the Club and market the Club and it’s virtues to the best of their ability. As we are now in the digital age you may have seen mentions of the MCC on YouTube and on our own Instagram page as we are well aware that not everyone uses Facebook and we try and keep all of our media platforms up to date. This year we hope to get to
Dealers around the country with new posters and application forms to help in getting our name out there. If you visit a dealer large or small and you don’t see anything of ours please get in touch with our Dealer Liaison Officer at peterj@ themotorcaravannersclub.co.uk who will be glad of the information and will contact them. Lastly, if you have any ideas on how to further market your Motor Caravanners Club then please get in touch. Graham Durkee
BOOKING FOR MCC RALLY AREA AT WARNERS SHOWS You need to book through Warners if you wish to have a pitch in the MCC area at Warners’ Shows, please make sure you put Motor Caravanners’ Club on your booking form. This will entitle you to a discount for parking with the Club. Please be aware that Club Marshals cannot alter your booking, so unless you do this, you will not be allowed to park with us and won’t receive the Club discount. 6 MOTOR CARAVANNER February 2022
Our Club’s policy is to treat all members with compassion and our Head Marshals and their team will do their utmost to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. The Marshals keep a few preferential spaces near to the toilets and access routes for members with wheelchairs. Mick and Sue Pilkiw, Head Marshals and their team look forward to welcoming you to the 2022 season of outdoor shows.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Andrew (Andy) Thompson in December. Andy and Pauline were frequent ralliers and made numerous friends throughout the country since joining the Club in 1986.During this time they moved from Kent to S&W Wales Group, before returning to Kent. Andy was always willing to offer advice and will be remembered by all as a real gentleman. Our thoughts are with Pauline and family at this extremely sad time. Kent Group

The National Committee are busy planning what we hope will be a National Rally over the weekend 9th June-14th June 2022, when we will at last be able to meet up and celebrate our Diamond Jubilee. Three nights of professional entertainment have been booked, together with an evening when members can show off their talents. Have you stockpiled unwanted items during lockdown? If so, as usual, there will be a chance to sell them at the popular Silent Auction. For those Groups or members who raise funds for their chosen charity,

a garden type fete will be held for table top, tombolas, raffles etc. The Homecraft competition will again take place; as some of you will have already started items in 2019, the list for individual entries will stay the same. Our Party Night theme will be ‘The Sixties’ a chance to wear your fancy dress. Groups are encouraged to decorate their Group table, with a prize being awarded to the best one. NEW MODEL NEWS | SWIFT MONZA
S
wift are well-known and highly-regarded as a builder of high-top and coachbuilt motorcaravans, though not having a campervan in their line-up was an obvious omission, especially considering the revival of the genre. Many years ago, most members had such vehicles and then their popularity waned within the club. Now there has been a reversal and we are seeing more of them on the rally fields. They had always appealed to financially-challenged young families who only want to (or can only afford to) run one vehicle.
This is likely to be something that is equally suitable for ‘the schoolrun’ as it is for a fortnight’s family holiday. Recently, members have told me that they are thinking of replacing their elderly coachbuilt or high-top motorcaravan and ‘run-around’ car with a ‘multi-storey car park friendly’ campervan. In addition, the pandemic has seen a reduction in folk indulging in extended stays away and an increase in days out and weekend trips. Motor Caravanner magazine has not (yet) seen the Monza in
the flesh…though a careful study of the pre-launch images and videos suggests that it’s going to be a worthy candidate for prospective purchasers’ shortlists. We were hoping that members could examine this significant new model at the February NEC show, though we’ve just heard that Swift will not be exhibiting this year. Shame…let’s hope that either (a) they change their mind, or (b) an enterprising dealer chooses to display one or more Monza models on their stand. >>

CARAVAN, CAMPING & MOTORHOME SHOW PREVIEW
Showtime Will it or won’t it go ahead, and if it does, what is it that is there for us all to see? Frances and Michael Howorth report.
W
ith fingers crossed and bated breath, motorcaravanners across the UK are watching and waiting to see if February’s much anticipated Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show will take place. The Covid pandemic has played havoc with exhibition calendars, and while some shows have gone ahead at the National Exhibition
Centre in Birmingham over the last two years, many have been cancelled. If it does go ahead from the 2227 February, Halls 1-5 at the NEC will offer us a great opportunity to witness the largest showcase of campervans and motorhomes in the country. With potentially over 350 exhibitors showcasing their latest and greatest creations, it is also the place to discover a whole host of new, desirable, and essential gadgets and accessories that make our outdoor adventures even more special. The growth of the motorcaravan market is reflected with a 50% increase on models on display from manufacturers. Baileys of Bristol will display their Adamo and Autograph
models while the French-based Chausson will present two brand new vans for 2022 including the new 660. Adria will have a selection from each of their five motorhome range including their Compact, a low profile, slimline van designed specifically for couples. Coral is their 3 berth model range featuring a large panoramic window, while their Coral XL motorhome is an over cab model designed for large groups and families. Those who want a crossover, with an electrically managed over cab bed, should check out the Matrix, and for those who prefer an A class van, >> Pictured above: the show in February 2020, before the Covid pandemic shook the world

SHOW PREVIEW >> Adria will display their Sonic. The Edwin Hymer Group, whose brands include Elddis and Compass, will have models capable of sleeping up to six on board including their all new Pop-Top CV80. Marquis will display their all new Mobilvetta range. Swift will stomp up a good display of motorhomes and will use the show to launch Monza, their first campervan with seating for 5 and sleeping for 4. Bilbo’s have a selection which includes their Space, with its removable pods, and Nexa, whose layout includes an unusual kitchen in the rear. Murvi will have Fiat Ducato and Ford Transit versions of their Pimento and Morocco range on their stand while Rolling Homes will feature T6s with a host of different floorplans. Known mostly for building caravans, Coachman will use the show to launch their first ever motorhome as they enter what we all consider

to be the better of all incarnations within the leisure vehicle genre. Find time to check out displays from Vantage, Auto Campers and Auto Sleepers, each of whom will mount comprehensive presentations of motorcaravan models. Compass's CV80
While the big boys with their well advertised brands often get headline billing at top exhibitions like this, the show also offers the little guys the opportunity to play in the big pond and show their capabilities. Often, it is the innovative small output >>
The all new Expedition 68 The Expedition 68 is Auto-Trail’s first foray into the world of dedicated sports campers. With over 38 years of experience in designing and building motorhomes of all shapes and sizes, this is the only campervan they have created specifically for cyclists to travel and transport their bikes, equipment, and themselves. SHOW PREVIEW >> van builder that steals the limelight and, for us at least, they are one of the more important reasons to visit the show. Typically started up by motorcaravan enthusiasts who see a gap in the market, these entrepreneurs can, by building more bespoke vans, come up with some ingenious concepts that years down the line are adopted by the big brands themselves. Do not forget that it is not only consumers like us who visit the likes of the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show. Sometimes the person feigning interest in the 6.4 metres custom van built on the Fiat Ducato platform is engaged in what we might fancifully describe as commercial espionage – a real life spy!
Much more than 'vans
For us however the show is much more than 'vans and ideas! It offers us the chance to learn about accessories that we might want or simply cannot live without. Seeing and touching rather than simply buying online is so important. Outdoor seating, and furniture manufacturers often have wonderful displays and areas for testing. This year there will be BBQs, cooking equipment, clothing, and sleeping bags on display. Bikes,
cycle racks and bike covers will be there to view along with van covers, towbars, toilet accessories, satellite TVs, WiFi boosters, torches, lanterns, leisure batteries and much more. And don’t forget the bonus often on offer – special prices valid only for the duration of the show! If, like us, you’re looking for a new awning, then the show is the place to be. It will host a variety of awning solutions from many different manufacturers, many of which will have their new product pitched up ready for you to compare and inspect. Product experts will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. The Discovery Air Klimatex from Dorema is the latest addition to their Star Camp collection for motorhomes. Made from lightweight polyester fabric this versatile motorhome awning can be erected in minutes using the Easy Air Frame System (EAF). Better still it can also be used as a freestanding awning, leaving you free to drive off site while marking your spot for return. It attaches and detaches to a motorhome using a zipper in the tunnel and fits most motorcaravans with connection heights up to 270cm. PJ Outdoors is an independent retailer of camping and outdoor
equipment who plan a significant presence at the show selling outdoor brands, including Outwell, Vango, Zempire, Kampa, Outdoor Revolution, Coleman, Royal, Easy Camp, Regatta and Robens. Quest Leisure are suppliers to the caravan, camping, garden centre, leisure and outdoor pursuits trade sectors. They only supply to the trade direct and not the general public but will nevertheless have a substantial presence at the show. As a British company based in the midlands, they have been in business for over 25 years supplying the entire United Kingdom and Eire and if you see something you like on their stand, they will be able to put you in touch with your local retailer or point you in the direction of a website that can fulfil your needs.
Test drive
Among the other offerings at this year’s show will be the opportunity to test drive some campervans and sign up for motorhome manoeuvring courses. And if, like us, you have a strong desire to add an inflatable kayak to your onboard equipment, there is going to be the opportunity to test these boats on the show organisers' very own indoor pool, where you can also try out stand up paddleboards.
Uncertain times
While there is a lot to be positive and upbeat about, at the time of going to press many companies are unsure if they will be able to attend because of staff shortages caused by the pandemic. As is the nature of these uncertain times, we will just have to wait and see what happens!

28 vans came in the end to our New Year’s Party at Terrington St. Clements. We had visitors from East Midlands, Essex and the Vice Chair of Severn Valley who got in at the last minute. The urn was on for arrivals on Thursday afternoon and in the evening we had mulled wine with cheese and biscuits which was appreciated. A game of bingo followed profitable as usual by some. On Friday, committee members prepared the food for the evening buffet. Everyone assisted and a great spread was put on. The turkeys were cooked on site and sliced by Derek, assisted by Betty. The kitchen was very busy but well run. After the meal, we were entertained by Dale Diamond who kept us going until very late. A very versatile singer. On New Years Day at 11:30, Anglia put on ‘The Great Anglia Breakfast or Brunch’. There were eggs, scrambled or fried, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, beans, hash browns, black pudding and a production line of toasters manned by Betty, Carol and Derek. Upcoming rallies: 11-13 February. Risby Village Hall, IP28 6RT Start: 1pm. BOOKABLE 25 VANS. 24-27 February. Hoveton Village Hall, NR12 8DU Start: 1pm. HOVETON NOW BOOKABLE WITH TERESA OWING TO SPACE LIMITATION. DON’T FORGET TO CHECK THE PROGRAMME IF RALLIES ARE GOING AHEAD BEFORE LEAVING HOME.
AVON On behalf of Avon Group Committee, I extend best wishes to all for a very happy and healthy 2022 during which we’ll be able to resume our motorhome hobby safely. Many of us were disappointed that we were unable to proceed with the New Year rally, but with the venue being mostly in a confined indoor environment and the rapidly increasing rate of infection of the Omicron variant, being especially serious for the 50+ age group, we could not take such risk with a large gathering of members health and safety. The considerable effort and preparation that was put in for this event will not however be wasted as much can be applied to the fantastic rallies during the coming year ahead as detailed in the new programme. This provides you with a varied choice of interesting venues, several new sites and many with plenty of outdoor space. An additional rally to Brean Leisure Park has recently been booked from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 March 2022, which includes hard standing, EHU and shared freshwater facility at a cost of £15 pupn. Brean Leisure’s Country Club will be available to us for lunches and dinners plus any entertainment is to be advised. The following rally also will provide enjoyable outdoor space at the new venue of Hare Farm, in Twyford near Winchester. Here you’ll be sited on part of a working farm with a short walk to the bus stop for the village of Twyford or stay on the bus to the beautiful city of Winchester. Alternatively, catch the bus in the opposite direction to Fareham, so much choice! We are however >> February 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 29
GROUP NEWS still in need of volunteers to step in as hosts for these plus other rallies for which two vans will receive a fee free rally in appreciation. No hosts means no rallies and it would be a great shame to cancel events that have taken our rally officers considerable effort and time to arrange. If required, advice and assistance can be given by experienced hosts and guidance notes are available. So please, come forward by contacting Rally Officer Rowena on 07966 398518 or email: georgeisnow@ hotmail.com. Unfortunately, nightly rally costs were omitted from our new rally books but they can be found on our website www.avongroup.org.uk. Rally start times remain the same 12 noon unless otherwise stated. Rallies need to be prebooked through our secretary Karen on 07866 804141 or email: avonmcc@markandkaren. co.uk. Should you subsequently find you’re unable to attend, please advise Karen so your place can be offered to someone else. Some rallies have restricted numbers so don’t leave it too late to book and be disappointed, bookings are already coming in for events throughout the year. You can be assured of a warm friendly welcome at Avon rallies and the committee will endeavour to make your stay enjoyable. Sue Turl, Avon Chair
CHILTERN Here’s hoping that 2022 is a better year for rallying than last year, especially as it’s our 60th anniversary year. At the time of writing, things do look more hopeful. The Chiltern Committee have decided not to make all rallies bookable this year (unless the rules change) but quite a number need to be booked due to space constraints. These are noted in our rally programme and should be booked via a text to Julie as previously. Please do not use any other forms of communication. The first rally of the year is at Old Warden Village Hall (bookable) and at the time of writing spaces were available. The next is at Old Windsor - again, this one is bookable. It’s a very popular venue and early booking is advised. Hope to see lots Members in the very near future - let’s make 2022 a year to remember. Upcoming rallies: 18-20 February, Old Warden Village Hall, Bedford Road, Old Warden, SG18 9HB. Booking required. 11-13 March, St Peter’s Middle School, Crimp Hill, Old Windsor, SL4 2QY. Booking required.

Christmas Party Rally at Waddington. 26 vans were welcomed to the rally by the committee on a cold and misty afternoon. Friday evening the chair welcomed the members and then the evening started with a game of bingo. Anne organised a Dingbats table quiz. Brian organised a game of Pass-the-Dice, which was won by Walter and then Brian did a quiz which included what had happened in 2021. There was also a best Christmas jumper competition. After attending the coffee morning on Saturday, some members went into Lincoln. Sue provided a Christmas art activity for the children who made lovely Christmas decorations. In the evening, the committee welcomed the members with a glass of Bucks Fizz and served the members with a ploughman’s tea. Well done the committee! Evening entertainment was a disco by Peekays Roadshow plus other Christmas traditional activities. Santa could not come this year because of Covid, but he sent his brother who read a letter from Santa and gave the children their presents. On Sunday, coffee morning members minced pies were served before the raffle was drawn. During Chair’s Chat Anne wished everyone a merry Christmas and hoped to see them at the New Year Rally. Yvonne. New Year rally at Ingoldmells was attended by 27 East Midlands and 1 Yorkshire Van, 3 of which were first timers. Members came and decorated their tables ready for the New Year Celebrations. The rally was opened by a welcome chat from the Chairperson and then followed by bingo and a game of Scattergories. The evening was concluded by karaoke. Well done to all the singers! On New Year’s Eve, after the coffee morning, members enjoyed the delights of Ingoldmells or went into Skegness. The theme for New Year’s Eve party was the fifties. It was wonderful to see that the majority joined in, and they all looked fantastic in their teddy boys and girls outfits. We were entertained by Carlson and Bailey who got us all dancing the night away. On New Year’s Day, the members were treated to a coffee and cake afternoon. Thanks to everyone who provided homemade cakes - they were very tasty. In the evening, it was Dave Geall 70th birthday and Carol, assisted by Champa and Dot, provided everyone with a superb buffet. Silly games and party music were played. After a brilliant weekend provided by the stewards Brian, Ron, Anne and Yvonne, everyone met in the hall
for a coffee morning and Anne wished them all a safe journey home. EAST WESSEX Apologies to anyone unable to find our website. The transfer process was far from smooth but finally we have a new group website: eastwessex.uk. 18 vans came to our Christmas rally at Easebourne School including visitors from Chiltern (1), Kent (4), Surrey (1) and West Wessex (2). Friday was a cold day (toasty in the warm hall) but Cowboy Pete soon got the party mood going with his disco, which he so kindly puts on free of charge. Larry put up a Christmas tree and tables were decorated. On Saturday, many wandered down to Midhurst, returning in time for afternoon tea with mince pies. In the evening, we were entertained by Ken Weaver, a new singer for us, with a good range of music, and something for everyone. There was much dancing, to the obvious delight of our party loving visitors. Christmas jumpers abounded and Tony enjoyed himself flashing at everyone. The buffet and Yvonne's raffle both went down very well indeed, and Charlie's table did a roaring trade with Christmas decorations, proceeds going to group funds. The next rally was our New Year rally at Tadley, near Basingstoke and until the last minute we were not sure whether Boris would ban gatherings altogether. Luckily most decided to come along as planned. The 13 vans included visitors from Essex and West Wessex and how they enjoyed themselves. We had use of the hall and kitchen for the whole rally so could make coffee and sit in the warm whenever we wanted. Some ventured into Tadley whilst others caught the bus into Basingstoke. Over the course of the rally, we played skittles (won by Larry), deck shuffle, (won by Mitch, snatching victory from Roger), horse racing (Diane's horse won the owner's race), a Chinese raffle organised by Sheila plus a couple of quizzes and the ever-popular card bingo. New Year's Eve party was an elegant affair with some ladies in sparkle and men in evening suits. We started off with an excellent buffet, followed by Larry's mulled wine. The Simpsons came to entertain us and succeeded in getting us all on the dance floor at some time; Ed's twirls were truly amazing. Val's lovely raffle was drawn during the break, and unusually, everyone went away with something. A big thank you to all who worked so hard to make
these rallies a great success and to everyone for coming along and enjoying themselves. Hope to see you all again soon. Diane Upcoming TCs: 1-13 February, Ringwood Junior School, Hightown Road, Ringwood, BH24 1NH. Valentine's meet, smart casual dress (optional), homemade soup, Cowboy Pete's music on Saturday night. EGM: 10:30am, Sun 13 February. Cost £12.50 pupn (£10.50 pupn singles). Arrivals from 5pm (not before, please). 4-6 March, Easebourne School, Wheelbarrow Castle, Easebourne, GU29 9AG. Hardstanding and heated hall, nearby buses to Midhurst and Haslemere, first aid demonstration. Cost £15 pupn (£13 pupn singles). Arrivals from 5pm.
ESSEX Our New Year rally was allowed to go ahead, with Boris not changing any rules so it was a last-minute rush to get everything in place. We arrived on site at 1pm, opening up the hall to start getting tables/chairs in place and sanitized. Members started to arrive at 2pm, a few members cancelled at last minute due to various reasons, therefore this was a small gathering, but very enjoyable. Unfortunately, Linda Graham had to cancel as she fell down the stairs a couple days before cracking a couple of ribs, ouch painful. Get well soon Linda. We would like to welcome back Keith B after his hip op, hope all going well. We had in place in the hall, an area with a puzzle for member to put together, tea and Coffee urn was on for whole weekend, mince pies and biscuits were available also. Friday, we had our usual game of bingo, with a music bingo also, encouraging members to sing along. We welcome two brand new members from Anglia Group James and Marie, this was also their first ever rally. On Saturday, the local pub was taken over by our members who booked meals, this being New Year’s Eve, they also booked for New Year’s Day, which pleased the landlord and staff. We then went back to hall to decorate hall for evening party, our theme was red/white/blue, we were honoured by a cardboard cut-out off our Queen to embellish the hall. The evening went very well with many members dancing and singing to DJ Ronnie and Robert entertaining us. Some members must have enjoyed themselves as they forgot the next day that they had sung Auld Lang Syne. New Year’s Day: Quite a few members went for a brisk walk to the Marina, whilst others stayed in the warmth of the hall watching videos on a big screen, thanks to our Christopher. In the evening, our usual standard chair game, with members winning a bottle of alcohol, they were Keith, >> February 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 31
GROUP NEWS Tina, Brian, Rita P and Rita B, (hopefully when this mag is out, you’d have all received your bottles, which were in a locked compound). We then drew the raffle. Sunday morning tea/coffee and Chairman’s chat, with the first time rallyers then transferring to our Group (Sorry Keith) from the Anglia Group. PLEASE CHECK WEBSITE OR FB PAGES in case of any new restrictions. Bob Thorne. Upcoming rallies: Westcliff Boys School, 11-13 February, SS0 0BP, start time 5pm. KENT 10-12 December 2021, Christmas T/C, Greatstone Primary School. 24 Vans, 20 Kent, 3 Essex and 1 from Sussex. The weekend started Friday evening in the school hall, and I have to say, full marks to the school and their cleaning team. It was immaculate, thank you. We had a few games and background music and a good opportunity to chat with friends old and new. Welcome to four new Kent members: Tracey, Robert, Martin and Joan. Hope you enjoyed your first rally. Saturday during the day, the Hall was used for coffee/ tea on an as-and-when basis. Saturday afternoon, the festivities began with mulled wine, mince pies and Bucks Fizz (kindly supplied by Michael and Sue). Christmas Carols were sung with Jenny and Andye providing the music and words, thank you. The evening commenced with a bottle roll for whisky and Baileys with the proceeds going to the groups nominated charity. Bob Thorne, Chairman of Essex, kindly donated a bottle of whisky which was auctioned and the proceeds of the three events totalled £100, which will be donated to the KSSAA. A very big thank you to Vanessa for her music (offered on the day) and lovely Christmas cake and to Tony for the Disco. Sunday morning Coffee was commenced with a minute’s silence to remember those members, recently passed. Our thoughts are with their families. A great weekend, thank you to everyone who came and to the committee for your hard work. 30 December – 2 January, New Year T/C, Oasis Academy Sheerness. Regrettably, this TC was cancelled. The Committee came to the decision after seeing the Covid numbers starting to spike again and we wanted to ensure the safety of our members. LANCASHIRE The TC held from 10-12 December was our Christmas meet. It had a damp start again but Christmas spirit shone when people came with smiles and Christmas jumpers galore. Friday evening there were lots of tickets on sale followed by Mags’ Christmas quiz. It wasn’t easy. We also had bingo presented by Allan. Saturday morning, Val assisted by Barbara and Christine, helped lots of us to make a table decoration in the form of a traditional wreath. Lisa’s first attempt at a Crafty Crew session made such a cute example it was used for Lancashire’s Facebook header over the Christmas period. They were all used on our tables in the evening. After lunch, many congregated to play games; Kurling, Triominoes or others. The Kurling was progressing as expected with Brian and David winning when they were challenged by Bob, a crown green

bowler, the challenge was accepted although he had no partner and he beat them and won the prize! A sherry reception at 6pm followed by a beautiful, served buffet supplied by our usual caterers at this time of year. A pleasant change from the usual fare. Next, we had a mother and daughter act, Maternal Instinct, to entertain us with a good variety of songs and many danced the night away and a super evening finished with best of friends. Coffee morning had us munching on Joyce’s birthday cake for her 75th or mince pies or both! Don, our Chairman, told us that we had 32 Lancs. Plus 1 NWM&NWs vans. There were many thanks for the work of the committee, all other the helpers and contributors for making this weekend so successful. We finished with Bonus Ball winner’s prize and two raffles, the usual group Christmas raffle plus a raffle for our charity. Don wished us a safe journey home and Happy Christmas. bought a Yamaha Fazer 600. This was ok for me, but Jackie decided she wanted to try pillion riding. Thus, the Yamaha was changed for a Honda Transalp XL700, which was better for two up, using it for runs to the coast and even a bit of light off-roading across Salisbury Plain. In 2013, we got into motor homing and needed transport to explore our local camping area. We found a 1989 Honda AX1 250cc 4 stroke grey import, which is low weight for our rack, with plenty of power and just big enough for two up riding. This has been with us for 7 years, being transported on two motorhomes for our adventures in the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium and Spain. We love it, it has done us proud and must be the best £500 we have ever spent on two wheels. We have used it for several MCC MCG rallies over the past 3 years. The Transalp, which was stolen, has since been replaced by a Triumph Tiger 800 which we sometimes bring along to rallies on a trailer. Itching to start riding again this year!
MOTORCYCLE Our first Motorcycle review for 2022 is from Simon Harrison. I started my motorcycle career in my early teens riding old Villiers/Dot/Greeves in the gravel pits. My age group were the first to be caught with the new moped law which forced us to use 50cc mopeds when 16 years old. My first moped was an NSU Quickly (not quick at all!) with a rigid back end, which was soon replaced by an NSU Quickly with rear suspension - luxury! A 175cc BSA Bantam followed as soon as I was 17. The Bantam was written off a few months later when a 72-year-old gent did a classic, ‘sorry mate I didn’t see you’, turning right in front of me! The insurance money for the bike and a few cuts allowed me to buy my first Japanese bike, a Yamaha CS3E 200cc twin two stroke, which seemed a quantum leap forward from the Bantam. I swapped the Yamaha for a Bultaco Sherpa 325cc trials bike, after I was inspired by watching Sammy Miller at a local trial. I competed in trials for the next 5 years, trailing various Bultaco and Montesa trials bikes around the South of England and Wales. I rode in quite a few national level events with the likes of Sammy Miller, Malcolm Rathmell and Martin Lampkin (World Champion). Then for 20 years, wife, home and kids stalled my biking until in 2008 I took up green laning with a Honda XL250R which was great fun. I then decided to try a bigger road bike as I never had one when younger and
NENE VALLEY The cold wind blew and then the rain joined in, but that didn't deter the 21 vans that joined us for our four-night Christmas rally this weekend. We had plenty of Nene Valley members, visitors from Kent, East Mids and East Wessex, plus Nene Valley members who joined us on Saturday for the evening in their car. It was lovely to see them again and catch up with their news. With no hall on the Thursday night and all on electric hook-up, we all stayed in our nice warm vans and tried to ignore the weather outside. On Friday evening, we all trooped over the road to the new hall for an evening of a Christmas themed singalong with Martin, followed by Tony's "easy" quiz. Outside caterers served up a delicious meal on Saturday evening and Billy De Laine rounded off the evening with his amazing stand-up comedy and singing routine. GROUP NEWS entertain us, he managed to make us all laugh as well as getting most of us on the floor for a dance - something we've not been able to do for ages. Paul organised a game on Sunday evening in the hall which kept everyone amused. A big thank you goes to Pat and Jane for organising the raffle, to Sue for making the place names and especially to our committee who put in such a lot of hard work to ensure that members enjoyed their four-night rally. For our first rally of the year at Cardington, we now have the use of the Village Hall for the Saturday evening. Barnstones Rally 21-24 April: The Saturday of this rally is 23 April - Saint George's Day. We therefore invite you to join us in the evening in the Village Hall as we celebrate the patron saint of England and everything English. If possible, we’d like everyone to dress in red and white. Find out a little bit more about George and then celebrate with us some historic English men and women - songwriters, rulers, politicians, performers, poets, artists, military heroes and more. We'll have singing and entertainment and an ‘England and the English’ quiz. Upcoming rallies: 18-20 February, Home Farm, Cople Road, Cardington, Beds, MK44 3SN, Start: 1pm. Cost: £12 pupn. 18-20 March, Geddington Youth Club, Grafton Road, Geddington, NN14 1AJ, Start: 1pm. Cost: £12 pupn. 21-24 April, Barnstones C&C Park, Main Street, Great Bourton, OX17 1QU, Start: 1pm. NORTHERN COUNTIES Hi everyone. We had our Christmas TS at Barnard Castle auction mart. There were 28 motorhomes from Northern Counties, 2 from Lanc. On the first evening, we had a Christmas jumper competition that most of our members participated in but after much deliberation, it was won by Eddie Elliott, a long-standing member of Northern Counties. Well done Eddie, a worthy winner! Thanks to everyone who took part. We also had games and raffles. The following evening, we had a threecourse meal which was held in the cricket club. A great weekend had by all. We had our New Year celebrations at Prior Pursglove College, Guisbrough. This TS was hosted by the committee. There were 29 motorhomes from Northern Counties, 4 from York, 2 from Lancs, 1 from East Mids. The entertainment was by Mark Thomas who was a brilliant singer and guitarist which was enjoyed by all who attended. For New Year’s Eve, we had a buffet supplied by a local catering company and also a disco leading up to the New Year’s toast and a piece of Christmas cake, homemade by Jan Havert, which was delicious. Mark Lang brought in 2022 by counting 36 MOTOR CARAVANNER February 2022
down the minutes to the New Year. Thanks Mark, a job well done. We’d also like to thank our Vice Chairman Graeme Havert and his wife Jan for finding the entertainment and disco for our New Year celebrations at very short notice. We had a raffle with the first prize of a Kindle was won by Owen Lang and Amy Johnson. There were various other prizes of bottles of spirits. We played stand up bingo and play your cards right. A lot of our members enjoyed Guisborough town centre, especially Wetherspoons, as always. There was a walk arranged by Martin Phillips with 6 trusting souls of just under 4 miles. Their reward was stunning views of Guisborough Priory and the North Sea. We also introduced a card reader for members to pay by card or cash on arrival. Our suggestion box made its debut. We have put this in place for our members to put forward ideas for new venues/places of interest they would like to visit etc. We had a good response. We’ll be following them up in due course. To finish a great 4 day rally, we were awoken by the sound of the local church bells ringing. Upcoming TCs: Houghall East Durham College Campus, 11-14 February. Blucher Social Club Newcastle, 4-7 March. All rallies are on our website. Thanks, Nora.
NORTHERN IRELAND Cookstown Primary School 10-12 December: This was to be a special Christmas Rally and it proved to be exactly that. We all started to arrive at 5pm and as a curtain opener, we were greeted with a tremendous round of applause by the resident group of rooks high up in their balcony seats. They in fact continued the standing ovation over the weekend (I love them). 40 vans arrived on Friday night with a further 3 on Saturday giving a total of 43 vans. Mary and Joseph were part of the welcoming team (I told you it was a special Christmas rally), together with Irene, Robbie and Bill. We were quickly signed in and parked up. An Angel, yes, Angela the school bursar, had opened the doors and allowed us shelter on this cold and wet night. The wise men and women from all over the Provence were guided to the assembly hall for meet and greet. Great to be indoors again. A very enjoyable session of bingo compared by Florence and assisted by Irene Hewitt soon had everyone settled down. It was now birthday time for no less than 7 (Joe McClune, Evie Pirie, Anne Grant, Bailey Stewart, Tom Adair, Harry Aston and Ellie's granddaughter Hannah). Both chocolate and coffee cakes were cut and were delicious. This was followed by a wonderfully seasonal selection of music played by Gary Little. The hall glowed and sparkled with lights, tinsel and beautiful Christmas trees.
Saturday proved to be still wet which actually suited, as Selma and Agnes set up a workshop in the creation of table decorations. This proved to be both educational and very interesting. Well-done ladies! Evie displayed her skills to the children in the creation of tea lights and decorations. The Cookstown street market and shops attracted many happy campers despite the dismal weather. Saturday evening arrived and everyone arrived in Christmas jumpers to what rapidly became a packed hall. Mulled wine, mince pies and Yvonne Little’s shortbread was both warming and delicious. Enter that old favourite DJ. Joe. Yes, his choice of music soon had those dancing feet in action. It was reassuring to know the hosts had the defibrillator at the ready. During the ballot break, we learned the best outfit was Davy and Evie Pirie. Best table decoration deservedly went to Iris McEwan. Hannah and Phoebe received selection boxes. (Possibly our future Chair and Secretary). Sunday morning Coffee Morning: An address by our Chairman, Joe McClune which was well received. Quiz: Only one single correct answer Mary Cameron, well done Mary. Number plate Draws: Billy Little and William McLester. Two new vans: Eddie and Margaret O'Donnell and Tom and Julie Lowry. We also had the pleasure of welcoming a new member, Patricia Craig. I hope Patricia has had a good initiating weekend and please remember, new members make great hosts. As previously stated, a very special weekend thanks to our extremely active hosts, a very big thank you to you all. Looking forward to seeing you all at New Year’s Eve at Portadown. The rooks still cheered as we left. See photos by Roy Smith and Irene Hewitt in Gallery. Enda and Flo. Portadown Rally for New Year and La Mon House Dinner Dance in the middle of January was cancelled due to the Covid 19 regulations. Thankfully, all who attended the Christmas rally in Cookstown had a great time. The previous rally report was beautifully articulated and certainly Enda and Flo have a way with words. By the time you are reading this, Christmas and New Year will seem a long way behind us. And so, we hope are restrictions that prevent us from having live music and dancing again. The committee are trying their best in very difficult times. We hope all our members will be safe whilst we ask for your support at any of the rallies we can organise. We are sorry if changes have to be made due to circumstances beyond our control. The web page still remains the main centre of information. The text messenger service will still send updates. If anyone is not receiving these, please let me know. But also, the Facebook page which, on writing this, has 169 members, is sharing information to our members who like this form of communication. Again, please get in touch if you wish to be included. And finally, we'd ask that members come forward to
do hosting duties. You'll be given whatever support you need. Selma McMullan has very kindly taken up the mantle of Rally Officer again, thank you. Hope to see you all soon. Stay Safe. Irene Hewitt.
NWM&NW Our Festive Meet (a change of format and name due to Covid) in December 2021 at Minsterley Parish Hall went really well. It was all arranged very quickly as we weren't sure what restrictions would be in place. The hall only confirmed late in September and our usual caterer was fully booked, so a decision was made to try the hog roast idea. Many things were quickly sorted and some of our usual traditions were kept. Friday evening began with mulled wine and mince pies and was followed by bingo. There were some lucky winners. Shirley and Darren and Tom Gallimore won a line and a house. We welcomed visitors: Lyn and Charlie Linay, from Yorkshire group and new members, Mel and Pearl Smith. The village church was open all day to enable anyone to visit to view the different nativity scenes on display and enjoy tea/coffee and cake. Many of our members took advantage of the hospitality as the day was a little gloomy and damp, though some may have travelled to Shrewsbury by bus. A small group played dominoes in the hall while Dave Hulme entertained with carols on his keyboard. The evening started with our usual sherry reception and, then progressed to a wonderful hog roast served with a selection of salads followed by a choice of cake. There was plenty for everyone with some having seconds or even thirds. The singer, Irena in her shiny silver dress, entertained throughout the evening with a wide range of music (Beatles, Abba, 60's and 70's), as she tried to encourage us all to dance. We were a little too full of roast pork, but as time went by, more and more began to fill the floor with some very interesting styles of dance. A good night was had by all! Sunday morning coffee was raffle time when even the visitors’ won prizes and Linda pulled out her own ticket. The best decorated table was won by Shirley, Darren Glenys and Len as judged by the caterer. The whole weekend went very well. A big thank you to everyone who worked, helped and came to make the rally a resounding success. Unfortunately, the New Year Rally at Cockshutt Millennium Hall was cancelled due to the rising numbers of cases of corona virus. Let's hope 2022 is a better year and we see you at a venue. Stay safe. SCOTTISH Hello fellow members. I hope you had a good festive period. By the time you read this, a new rally season will only be a month away. At this time of year, there’s very little to report upon. I’m thinking ahead to the rally season having bought a polar screen and a pop-up awning. I’m sure other members will also be preparing ahead, having the motorhome serviced for example. A final decision has been made to replace the John Brown Trophy. This trophy is now full and has been unused for years. It will be replaced with a new trophy in memory of Gordon Thickett. The trophy will be awarded to the member(s) that attends most rallies in a season. The winner being announced at the AGM each year. Our first rally will be held at Cairnsmill near St Andrews from 10-14 March. Cost of the rally is £14 pupn. This is a very good site, being there myself two years ago. We all have EHU and hardstanding and the site allows use of the pool at an extra cost. There’s a room adjoining the bar area which we are given exclusive use for social gatherings. From there, we move onto Larick Caravan Park Tayport. This rally will run from 14-18 March inclusive. Cost of the rally will be £17 pupn. With EHU. There is a café next to site, room for socialising and site on a bus route as is Cairnsmill. All rallies still remain by booking in advance. Regards, Squeezebox.
SEVERN VALLEY The Severn Valley Group have not had a rally since the last publication following the cancellation of the New Year Rally due to the increased impact of Covid at the time. We are however working hard on finalising the 2022 programme and look forward to welcoming you to the 2022 rallies. All our rallies will be published on our website and they will state whether they are bookable or turn up on the day. Bookings can be made via the website severnvalleymcc.co.uk by clicking on the “Get in touch” icon on the home page. We are currently trying to secure a site for a valentines rally which will be confirmed on our website.

Having checked with the site, our Group was fortunate to be able to hold its New Year rally at Trevarrian Holiday Park. We were a small number of 7 vans, 5 SWPG, 1 East Midlands and 1 NW&NM, including their 38 MOTOR CARAVANNER February 2022
Newfoundland dog, Betty. The weather was wet and windy for the first 3 days making walking the Southwest Coast path almost impossible. There is a good local bus service and a ‘Coast to Coast’ partially open top double decker (I can imagine you all shivering at the thought!) passing by the site. Caroline and Richard from East Midlands took advantage of both services, enjoying touring Cornwall. Nikki and Paul from NW&NM braved walks with Betty. Paul keeps himself fit and joined everyone for the New Year Day swim at Newquay! The swimming pool was open and SWP member Sylvia, had a dip each day. The site-planned live entertainment on the 29th with Arthur (who entertained us at our AGM) could not go ahead because he tested positive. It was Bingo on 30th and I had a first-time win. Then, it was Jamie’s disco time on the 31st and optional fancy dress. Nikki and Paul did us proud being the only ones in their Bavarian Fancy dress. There are photos of them on the SWPG Facebook page. Jamie had many up dancing with his great selection of music and so we said goodbye to 2021 and welcome to 2022. Those on our rally, together with other campers, got together for the Trevarrian Bowling & Meal deal late New Year’s afternoon. Pleased to report that the winner was MCC member Richard. It was a good ending to the rally and we were all hopeful of more to enjoy this coming year. One comment is that a few MCC members who were booked on the New Year rally did not turn up, without letting SWP know. It was lucky there was plenty of pitches available for those who did so. Writing this at the beginning of January it is looking positive for 2022 rallies to go ahead, which is good news… just need hosts so that we can run a full programme. Barbara, Secretary. Upcoming rallies: Watergate Bay, TR8 4AD, 25-28 March, £14.00 pupn inc ehu, hosts required - no hosts, no rally!
S&W WALES Hello again on a very frosty but sunny winter’s day which is just what is needed to cheer us up as the Covid situation remains bleak. I’m delighted to be able to report on a very successful December event - Many thanks to Muriel for her help in reporting this event. Baskerville Hall Christmas Dinner Dance Weekend 10-12 December 2021: As we arrived at Baskerville Hall, the weather was typical for the Brecon area in December but, once we were parked up, we were able to stroll around the grounds. Located in Clyro, Baskerville Hall Hotel is a very imposing building situated about a mile from Hay on Wye. It’s set in 130 acres of the picturesque Wye Valley with views of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park.
The property provides accommodation with a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, restaurant and bar. Built in 1839 by Thomas Baskerville and featured in a famous Sherlock Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, the property is now a hotel offering individually designed guest rooms but with a camp site just thirty metres from the hotel across the lawns. The weekend was fully booked and there were 29 vans with visitors from Severn Valley, South West Peninsula, West Wessex and regular guests from Nene Valley Pat and Paul Betts. The hotel served dinner on Friday night, and we were not disappointed as it was excellent with a good selection on the menu. After dinner, we had a few games of bingo and music until late as the friendly staff kept the bar open until midnight. Quite a lot of the members had booked a cooked breakfast in the hotel which was very good and piping hot with plenty of orange juice and hot drinks. With the hotel serving food throughout the weekend, it meant we could have a proper break from cooking and washing up. Some members also enjoyed the facilities of the swimming pool and the sauna during Saturday. Saturday evening gave everybody the opportunity to get their glad rags on ready to enjoy the dinner dance. The evening started with a super three-course meal
which, again, was very good. The entertainment for the evening was Bethany Jones, a Whitney Houston tribute act from Pontypool. She had a lovely voice, and it was hard to believe she was only eighteen years old. The second half of her act was a variety of musical styles with plenty of music for dancing. Sunday started with another lovely breakfast and later, at the coffee morning, it was agreed that the weekend had been one of the best the club had ever organised. Many thanks to Pam and Dave Couldrick for finding this fabulous venue and organising the weekend, and guess what, the venue is booked again for next year. Unfortunately, due to the increase in Covid restrictions, our New Year rally at Kidwelly had to be cancelled. Please note that future rallies will all depend on the Covid restrictions in place at the time so we recommend that you check the S&WW website for any amendments. As the days get longer and there is a promise of better to come, I hope that your new year continues to be healthy and happy and look forward to seeing you soon. Upcoming rallies: 11-13 February, Pencoed School, Bridgend, CF35 5LZ, Valentine Weekend - CANCELLED BY THE SCHOOL DUE TO CURRENT RESTRICTIONS. 4-6 March, Princess Gwenllian Centre, Kidwelly, SA17 4UL, St.David’s Day weekend, starts 5pm. 1-3 April, Dan-yrOgof Caves, Abercraf, SA0 1GJ, Amazing venue, starts 2pm. 14-19 April, Buttyland Manor, Manorbier, SA70 7SN, Easter weekend, starts 2pm.

Welcome to the start of a brand-new year and season with your motorhome, club and friends. A big thank you to all those who made our Xmas party at Bexhill so successful. Members from six different areas were present, with Sussex leading the way. The weekend began with the regular Friday night chitchat including the Christmas jumper fashion show followed by games such as ‘roll the coin’ (spectacularly won by John the Jacket) and ‘guess the number of Lego bricks’ (bottle of champagne claimed by Chris Pope). A total of £65 was raised for charity. The following day was cold but dry, enabling many to visit Bexhill town centre. During the afternoon, several members attended a craft session, making festive trees by book folding. For the evening entertainment, DJ Tom provided the music from various decades, ensuring a good turn out on the dance floor. Just after 9pm, we had a visit from a mystery man, all dressed in red, crying out “Ho, ho, ho!” and dishing out presents which were enthusiastically received. Obviously, we’d all been good boys and girls! The weekend ended with the usual coffee morning, >> February 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 39

We will, of course, continue to follow all guidelines to ensure the safety of our members. Our next TCS is at South Lytchett Manor at Lytchett Minister, BH16 6JB from 17-20 March. This is a full facilities site with bus stops at the gate to Wareham, Dorchester, Poole and beyond. There are two pubs within easy walking distance, both serving very good food. There is also a craft centre with cafe, again within easy walking distance. The meet is bookable, in advance, with Carole on 07586 292985. If at the last minute, you are unable to attend, please ring Carole to cancel. STOP PRESS - Provided hosts have been found, there will be TCSs at Eype, near Bridport in February and in Swanage at the beginning of March. Both are full facilities sites with electric hookups. Please see website for full details.
YORKSHIRE What a brilliant weekend had at Driffield showground to celebrate Tony Shaw's 81st birthday (delayed 80th from last year) and our Christmas party rally. Friday was party night which was all donated by Tony, including buffet, free drinks, disco and karaoke. Quite a few members got up and sang, some good and some not so good, but a good night had by all. Saturday night, we had Nigel Heap singing for us, most members in there Christmas jumpers, dancing the night away. Upcoming rally's: 11-13 February, Wetherby Racecourse, LS22 5EJ. 11-13 March, March Hawes Auction Mart, DL8 3NP. 25-27 March, Marsden Cricket Club, HD7 6NN.

Gorgeous natural landscapes, rich culture and history, delicious local fayre and the warmest welcome – Ireland and Northern Ireland have it all.
Dublin Castle
Dublin Castle
Set in the heart of Dublin, this is an important building to visit if you find yourself in Ireland’s vibrant capital – especially as the Black Pool (Dunh Linn) in the castle’s grounds is where the city gets its name. Erected in the early thirteenth century on the site of a Viking settlement, Dublin Castle served for centuries as the headquarters of English, and later British, administration in Ireland before the country’s independence. Take a guided tour of the magnificent State Apartments, which are still used for state events, and are filled with artwork and artefacts from the 17th century to the present day. The Medieval Undercroft excavations and Chapel Royal are also available to visit on 42 MOTOR CARAVANNER February 2022
Glendalough
Glendalough
This spellbinding settlement is one of the most picturesque areas of east Ireland, and is only a stone’s throw from Dublin. Here you’ll find an ancient monastic city set amongst rolling hills and two scenic lakes that offer a variety of walks. One of the lakes, Lough Tay, has dark waters and is shaped like a pint, so is of course known as ‘Guinness Lake’. Head to the viewing point to see it for yourself. Also in the area is Powerscourt House, a beautiful country estate with exquisite gardens to explore – complete with its own waterfall, the highest in Ireland. Killarney National Park

Temple Bar Pub
There are countless fabulous watering holes in Ireland, but a trip to this renowned pub has become a rite of passage whilst you’re in Dublin. The whole area of Temple Bar is great to stroll through of an evening after a day of exploring,
with endless pubs, restaurants and plenty of craic to be found. The quirky Temple Bar Pub itself is home to one of Ireland’s largest collections of rare whiskies, and hosts traditional live music every day. Come early to ensure a table, grab a pint of the black stuff, then sit back and soak in the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Florence Court
Killarney National Park
Ireland is home to six national parks, all unique in their own right and well worth a visit to appreciate some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Killarney National Park, in County Kerry, is spread over 26,000 acres and encompasses several lakes, the country’s largest area of ancient oak woodland, its highest mountains and its only wild herd of native red deer. At the hub of the national park is the Muckross Estate, a 19th century Victorian mansion with formal gardens and traditional working farms, showing what farming life was like in the 30s and 40s.

SECURITY
As Covid-19 changes the way we travel and enjoy our leisure time, there has been a significant rise in the theft of motorcaravans. Frances & Michael Howorth investigate ways to make your van safe in this first part of their two-part security feature
T
hieves are targeting motorhomes and campervans because, in times when quality stock at dealerships is low, motorcaravans are commanding high prices on the black market and many leisure vehicles are being stolen to order. Campervans and motorhomes are being shipped abroad shortly after they have been stolen or in some cases broken down into component parts and sold off piecemeal. Figures show that the average recovery rate after a vehicle has been stolen is around 30%, giving a 3 in 10 chance of getting the vehicle recovered after theft.
Most people do not realise that even if the vehicle is found after being stolen, there are still costs involved for recovery, storage and/ or repair. These costs will likely affect future insurance premiums.
Protect your asset
The question is how best to protect your asset? There are several tried and tested gadgets that act as visible deterrents, chief among these being steering wheel bars and wheel clamps. But short arm steering wheel locks can still allow the steering wheel to rotate. Such aftermarket security solutions can be both cumbersome and bulky and need to be fitted or removed every

Keeping your motorhome safe from thieves
time you enter or leave a vehicle. Then they should be safely stored when not in use, so that they do not become a potential hazard should the campervan become involved in a collision. Wheel clamps, while ideal for home and campsite parking, are rather heavy to travel with, and like steering wheel locks can be cut off by the determined thief. GPS trackers, theft recovery systems, vehicle entry alarms and even electronic keys have their limitations and offer little in the way of security. True they do benefit the recovering of a vehicle after it has been stolen, but most do little if anything to prevent the initial theft. All of these devices do nothing to prevent someone accessing any personal information or valuables that may be stored in the vehicle, nor do they prevent theft without keys. Stealing without keys is one of the most common methods used by thieves to get hold of campervans and motorhomes. Search the internet and it will not take long for the would-be thief to find computerised gizmos that bypass ignition systems. These cheap, quick and easy to use devices can easily unlock the doors of most of the vans on the market today. Once in the vehicle, all the thief has to do is compromise the ECU, start the >>

Never leave keys with a stranger
A recent survey suggested 4 out of 10 of us never think twice about handing over keys to a stranger when we take our vans in for service at the garage. Organised criminal gangs are exploiting this by placing people in these garages to get access to campervans and motorhomes. It can take them less than 10 seconds to program a new key from yours using their own hidden equipment. Personal details such as your address are then copied from paperwork and if this information is not available, they may ask you when you collect the vehicle and get the information they need. Once they have a key and a location, it takes just seconds to steal the vehicle at a time of their choosing. There is also little suspicion with this type of theft as it is just someone walking up to a
vehicle, with a key, getting in and driving away. Never leave your morcaravan unlocked even when paying for fuel at petrol stations. It can take less than 20 seconds for thieves to enter, start and drive away your mobile home. They do this by using electronic devices pre-programmed so that when it plugs into a vehicle, the alarm is turned off during the ‘hacking’ process. It is then used to program a new key or to otherwise trick the vehicle into thinking the key is already present. The equipment to carry out this type of theft is not illegal to buy, own or sell and is widely available across the internet. Many of the websites selling this will even include tutorials and videos showing the effectiveness of their systems.
Our solutions
So what did we do to protect Voyager? We asked Celtic Motorhomes who custom built our van to fit a Global Telemetrics GPS Tracker Model in addition to the Thatcham 2 approved alarm that was fitted to the van by Fiat during its construction. To that we have added an Autowatch Ghost immobiliser. It is a clever product from a South African company at the forefront of vehicle security technology. It will protect us from key-cloning, hacking, and even key theft. The only way a thief will be able to take Voyager away is by
As motorhome thefts continue to rise it is prudent for owners to improve security fitted to their vehicles, says motorhome insurer Caravan Guard. Not just electronic devices such as Thatcham approved tracking devices and alarm systems but also mechanical devices such as steering wheel locks, wheel clamps and also driveposts if storing at home. A visible mechanical device such a steering wheel lock might just make that thief move on to an easier target. Caravan Guard rewards careful motorhome owners with big insurance discounts for fitting security devices, for instance they offer 19% discount for installation of a Thatcham Category 1 approved alarm system and a 25% discount for installation of a Thatcham S5 or S7 approved tracking device system. A list of approved devices can be found at www.caravanguard.co.uk/ tracking Security isn’t infallible of course and that’s why it’s vital to purchase a specialist insurance policy to pay out for your motorhome and all your motorhoming equipment in the event of theft. physically towing it away, and even then, they will never be able to drive it! The immobiliser has no key-fobs or LED indications to give away its location. It uses the buttons such as those on the steering wheel, door panels or centre console, to allow you to make a unique, changeable PIN code sequence that must first be entered before we can drive Voyager. Without that unique code the Ghost will prevent the engine starting. No, we will not be printing >> February 2022 MOTOR CARAVANNER 57

On-board diagnostics
Another way to protect against the modern van thief is to consider protecting the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port. In recent years thieves have been able to override vehicle security systems by hacking the OBD port. The OBD allows the vehicle owner or repair technician access to the status of the various vehicle sub-systems. This on-board vehicle computer technology has been around since the 1980s and it is likely that today most motorhomes and campervans have one fitted somewhere.
Early versions of OBD would simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light or "idiot light" if a problem was detected but would not provide any information as to the nature of the problem. Modern OBD implementations use a standardised digital communications port to provide real-time data in addition to diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allow technicians to rapidly identify and remedy malfunctions within the vehicle. By adding an OBD protector, information travelling to the OBD port is stopped and therefore prevents a thief from accessing it, effectively closing the OBD port whilst locked. Portector make such a system that is permanently integrated into the vehicle without the need to cut into the wiring and designed specifically to protect a vehicles' OBD port. Think of it as an electronic safe securely fitted on the end of the port. When armed the safe is closed
and locked, retaining all of the valuable information in the vehicle. When unlocked and open everything is available. To turn off the system or ‘open the safe’ all you need is an OBD Port Activation Card. These cards are required to temporarily switch the device off and allows full access to the vehicle. It does not prevent any regular servicing/maintenance or other work being carried out on the vehicle providing the owner authorises such work by presenting their card. In part two next month we look into immobilisers in more depth. Freelance travel journalists Frances and Michael Howorth, Club members since 2020, tour in their own custom built campervan. Converted from a LWB Fiat Ductao Maxi, Voyager is their pride and joy, come mobile office and home from home.

SITE REVIEW
Derbyshire in Dece I
f I say that, despite the very wet weather (hardly surprising during mid-December), we had a whale of a time whilst staying with friends at this small-butperfectly-formed site adjacent to the River Derwent, you will deduce that it is a great place to stay. Its most obvious advantage is ‘location’, i.e. in the grounds of the Grouse & Claret, which offers a pet and child-friendly garden and courtyard, quality ales, as well as value-for-money breakfasts, lunches and dinners, plus overnight accommodation for any nonmotorcaravanners in your party. The village of Rowsley is home to a Post Office and shop, Caudwell’s Mill and Craft Centre, plus other galleries and businesses. The area is surrounded by designated paths and bridleways. Don’t plan on dieting during TELL T U S A B OU S THE SITE YOU LOVE!
your visit as there’s too much temptation within five minutes' stroll from the site. In addition to the Grouse and Claret, vegetarians
and vegans are particularly well catered-for at the café within the Mill complex, and/or fine dining is available at the Peacock Hotel.
Caudwell’s Mill is a beautifully-kept four-storey water mill. Admission is free, but a donation towards its upkeep will be welcomed. Next to the mill race is a craft shop (inset). There is also a vegetarian and vegan café.

Heritage locomotive enthusiasts plus ‘children of all ages’ will enjoy a trip on the Peak Railway. We boarded a ‘Santa Special’, experiencing steam-hauled travel on a relaxed return trip from Rowsley to Matlock. Before you ask, we did see Santa and his helpers, plus we enjoyed light refreshments on our journey. My request for a Tesla for Christmas was neatly fielded by the ‘white bearded one’ when he responded that I hadn’t been good enough and so was on the ‘naughty list’.
