Brought to you by the team at Community News, we are proud to showcase and highlight what this special town has to offer both residents and visitors to Saxmundham. An historic and charming market town, Saxmundham is perfectly located just off the A12 and only a few miles for the stunning Suffolk Heritage Coast and all the sights and attractions that has to offer. The town also benefits from fantastic rail links with Lowestoft to the north and Ipswich (and all that lies beyond) to the south.We are fortunate to be served by a fabulous High Street where you will find plenty of quirky independent shops,

Referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Saxmondeham, Samundeham, Sasmundeham and Sasmundesham, it fell within the Plomesgate hundred and was included in the lands of Roger Bigod (or Bigot). It records that before 1066, it was held as a manor by Algar, a thane of King Edward’s, with two carucates of land and 40 acres, five villagers, 10 smallholders and three slaves. Seven free men were added under the patronage of Algar. Another manor of 140 acres was held by Northmann, with
three acres of meadow, a church and a further 15 acres and other land, the value of which was in total 30 shillings (£1.50).

There is a market on Wednesdays, continuing the custom granted in the royal charter by Henry III in 1272. A further charter was granted in 1310 by King
Set in the valley of the river Fromus, the rural market town of Saxmundham (with a population of over 4,500) lies just off the A12 and is about six miles from the Suffolk Heritage Coastline. It has a good range of shops on its High Street alongside the Waitrose and Tesco supermarkets.Saxmundham has many amenities including two schools, a library, doctors’ and dentists’ surgeries and fire and ambulance stations. The railway station provides hourly weekday services to Ipswich and Lowestoft.
There are also many local activities and societies providing a diverse range of sports and leisure opportunities.Thefirstsettlement here is thought to have be made by Saxon raiders who sailed up the Fromus and stayed to exploit the surrounding fertile land.

On the main route between London and Yarmouth, until the coming of the railway in 1859 Saxmundham was an important stop on the turnpike, with several coaching inns servicing the stage and mail coach journeys through the town. The coming of the railway in 1859 caused the decline of the coaching trade.
Edward II to Thomas de Verlay, lord of the manor, ‘for good service which he has bestowed and continues to bestow on us’. It was made at Berwick-upon-Tweed on December 18th 1310. The market was to be held weekly on Thursdays and the fair was to be held annually on the Feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist (to whom the Parish Church is dedicated) and was to be of three days’ duration on the vigil, the day and the morrow of the feast. The market day changed to a Wednesday due to competition from nearby towns.

There was an annual lamb fair on August 18th on the land known as Lambsale Meadow, the site of the current doctors’ surgery.Theparish church of St. John the Baptist stands on the Eastern side of the town. Little of the original Saxon/Norman church mentioned in the Domesday Book remains following extensive restoration in the 19th century. The Western tower includes a clock and is home to a peal of six bells. The church has many fine stained glass windows. One unusual feature of the graveyard is a tombstone which has a working sundial carved into it.
Saxmundham originally had two manors: Swanns and Hurts. The Parish Church includes the Swann Chapel which was endowed by Robert Swann in I369 as a chantry.HurtsHall, the seat of the Long family until the 1950’s, was originally built around 1650 and Charles Long, the first of the family to settle here, was Member of Parliament for Dunwich in 1716. The Hall was replaced early in the 19th century and in 1893 was rebuilt after a disastrous fire.
The present Bell Hotel was built in 1842 on a site which had been occupied by an inn for centuries. The inn once had stabling for 40 horses, six acres of pasture and a bowling green. Perhaps the Bell’s most prestigious visitor was King George II who came to Saxmundham in January 1737. Having landed at Lowestoft at
Saxmundham was bypassed in 1987 when the route of the A12 was moved over to the west of the town. Most of the buildings in the High Street and Market Place are a great deal older than their present shop fronts portray, many of the buildings are timber framed with brick facades. A notable building is Monks Cottages, South Entrance, dating back to 1580 and was the subject of a BBC House Detective programme.

Saxmundham Museum is an independent local museum, managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. It was founded in 2004 by members of Saxmundham and District Local History Society and is dedicated to the preservation of local artefacts and documents from the area’s past.It’s exhibition rooms are packed with local history and fascinating artefacts, including details of notable local residents that date from Roman times right up to the present day. There is a dedicated children’s area where younger visitors can enjoy games and puzzles from bygone times.

Beginning in the same place there is a scenic route following (very roughly) the train line to Yoxford which is a pretty village and well worth a visit.

Fancy a trip to the beach? The Suffolk Heritage Coast has plenty of lovely beaches for you to visit. The closest are the beaches at Sizewell, Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Each offer something a little different and there is plenty to see and do. The main stretch of the beaches at Aldeburgh and Thorpeness are out of bounds for our furry friends from 1st May to 30th September but Sizewell is open all year round so they can run, swim and play for as long as you can keep up!

Walks: Starting in Saxmundham where the railway bridge goes over the High Street, there’s a circular walk heading north towards Kelsale. Roughly a four-mile route with lovely countryside views.

Whether you live in Saxmundham, are visiting for the day or have a longer trip planned, if you are a dog owner, you will know how important it is to involve your four-legged friend in your plans. Aldeburgh, one of the most desirable places to live in the whole country. Again, lots to see and do. Only a stones throw from Aldeburgh is Thorpeness where you’ll find the lovely boating lake and famous House in the Clouds. Next on the list is Snape. The refurbished and regenerated Maltings buildings now offer luxury housing, a famous concert hall and plenty of shopping and eating opportunities. Further down the coast, you come to Orford which ticks all the same boxes of being a pretty coastal village that seems to have changed very little over the last century. Move inland to discover the stunning 12th century castle at Framlingham and the lovely town of Woodbridge slightly further down the A12. There really is lots to keep you busy in this quiet corner of Suffolk.

But wherever you go, you will always want to return, as Saxmundham has so much to offer. As well as the museum, interesting church and traditional weekly market, Saxmundham has a busy, bustling high street with lots of independent retailers offering superb shopping. You can always be assured a warm welcome whether a visitor or resident, which makes Saxmundham a great place to visit and a great place to live.

People have travelled to our beautiful stretch of the east coast to enjoy a holiday for many years. This trend has increased significantly in recent years with the ‘staycation’ becoming more and more popular as we have had the option of travelling abroad limited during the Covid pandemic. Being right at the centre of the Suffolk Heritage Coast (albeit a few miles inland), Saxmundham is the perfect base from which to explore our corner of the world. In fact, Suffolk Coast and Heaths are now a designated area of outstanding naturalIdeallybeauty.located on the A12, access from Ipswich, Colchester and London to the south and Great Yarmouth and Norwich to the north is easy by car. And for those who prefer to travel by train, the station in Saxmundham is right in the centre of the town so affords easy access for shoppers and day Holidayvisitors.makers who chose to make Saxmundham their destination have chosen well, there’s no shortage of exploring to be done. Today, Dunwich is a small village with a handful of houses and ruins of an ancient abbey. However, in the 13th century it was an international port of a similar size to London. Sadly, in the late 13th century, three successive storms pretty much washed away the bulk of the town leaving only what is there now. Allegedly if you listen hard enough, you can still hear the bells of one on the many churches that were lost to the sea. Saxmundham Sports FC is a volunteer-run England Football Accredited club home to two adult teams playing in the Suffolk & Ipswich League, as well as an U18 team, and three girls’ teams. In recent times, we’ve seen the club produce league and tournament winning youth teams, with players progressing through to adult football at the club; many of whom have remained involved with the club through various volunteer positions.
Saxmundham Sports Cricket Club is a friendly but competitive team located Carlton Park on the outskirts of the town. The club aims to encourage people to get involved, participate but most of all, enjoy their cricket. The club play in the Two Counties League – Division 9 East (following a tough year and relegation from Division 8 in 2022). There are also friendly matches when they can be arranged.Being part of Saxmundham Sports & Recreational Club, the team has the benefit of excellent facilities including an artificial pitch, mobile net, bowling machine alongside changing rooms, showers, kitchen facilities etc.

Leiston Film Theatre...
Leiston Film Theatre (or Leiston Picture House as it was originally named) opened in October 1914 and has traded continuously for 107 years. Following a decline in cinema attendances in the 1970’s, the venue was saved from closure in 1976 by Leiston Town Council, who have invested in carefully updating the building to meet the expectations of today’s cinema audiences.
Most recently, larger toilets have been introduced and the foyer has been significantly enlarged and refurbished, to enable a separate area for the collection of pre-booked tickets and the introduction of a Visitor Information Point.
