Mabel the Whippet’s favourite walks...

The Commute

Mabel loves this walk from Reydon into Southwold. It’s a quiet walk, approximately 2 miles long and takes about 40 minutes. It can be quite muddy in the winter so wellies or good walking boots needed! A nice walk across the marshes giving the opportunity to spot a wide variety of migratory seabirds, and looking across to the foot of the town nestling along North Road.

Start point: On the Lowestoft Road in Reydon at the foot of the hill just after the village hall, and exactly where the road forks (left to Covert Road, right to Lowestoft Road), take the unmade track to your right (marked footpath), proceeding in an easterly direction across the marshes for about a mile, known locally as “The Butts”. Keeping to the footpath, (please be mindful if you have dogs, there are livestock kept on the adjacent fields), you will eventually come to Easton Bavents and the seawall. Turning right in a southerly direction, walk down towards Southwold Pier. Following the promenade along (dogs need to be kept on a lead at all times on the prom) takes you into the heart of lovely Southwold.

Mabel the Happy Whippet loves beautiful Southwold and it’s surrounding areas and says please be considerate of other walkers, the environment, taking your rubbish home and pick up your poo after you!

Harbour Walk

From Southwold town centre, this circular walk is also approximately 2 miles long and can take anything from 40 minutes to as long as you like, depending on whether Mabel wants to stop for some delicious harbour fish and chips at Mrs T’s or cold refreshments at The Harbour Inn!

Start point: From Southwold Market Place, head in a southerly direction along Queen Street and then down to Ferry Road. The length of Ferry Road can either be taken on the footpath or along the adjacent beach and sand dunes. On reaching either the Harbour Pier or the Lifeboat Station, depending on if you have taken the beach or road route, turn right at the campsite in a westerly direction along Blackshore Harbour. Please be aware that it is safer to keep your dog on a lead near the harbour due to fast moving tidal currents in the river (many dogs and their owners have had to be rescued by our lovely RNLI crew), and please also be mindful that Blackshore is still a busy working harbour. On reaching the Harbour Inn, you can either cut across the footpath in a northerly direction (signposted) over the saltmarshes towards Southwold common (may be flooded in the winter), or take the road uphill towards the water tower bringing you into York Road, heading in the right direction for the High Street again.
