5 simple ways to shop better for our environment .......................22

If you need a supermarket shop, choose the local Tesco’s or Co-Op as they employ local people and support local charities. As for the food, check its location; if it’s UK grown, buy that over something from aboard.

4. Choose food with no packaging

Do you ever see bananas wrapped in plastic and think, “if only they had a protective skin that keeps the banana safe? Oh, hang on, they do!” Bananas don’t need to be wrapped in anything so choose not to buy them if they are - the same goes for avocados, oranges, lemons, and onions. The same goes for products with excessive packaging. It’s not necessary. And if it is packaged, make sure the item can be recycled or is biodegradable. Even better if recycled materials make the packaging itself. Most of Southwold’s coffee shops and restaurants use compostable packaging, such as ninedeli, Café 51 and Squires.

5. Recycle & waste less

In recent months, food waste has been a point of focus in Southwold, the question being how best to recycle rather than send it to a landfill. Unlike other countries, the UK remains without the option to separate food waste for consumers, meaning uneaten or unwanted food gets thrown away and tipped at landfill sites across the country. Food waste at landfills decomposes and produces methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and is a significant contributor to global warming. Southwold’s local businesses are actively reducing their food waste. After separating it into designated bins, all food waste is transported to an Anaerobic Digestor (AD) Facility and used as a resource to produce biogas and natural fertilisers for the benefit of our society’s energy and agricultural needs. To give you an idea of how great this new initiative is, over 7 tonnes of food waste from local businesses has been diverted from landfills every two weeks. That is the equivalent weight of seven 1979 Volkswagen Beetles piled on top of each other! Here’s a list of Southwold businesses part of the local food waste scheme run by Sole Bay Waste & Recycling:

• Café 51 • Harbour Café • Harris & James • Ninedeli • Old Hall Farm Cafe/Maize Maze • Pitstop Cafe • The Randolph Hotel • Two Magpies Bakery • Sail Loft • Southwold Golf Club • Southwold Pier • Sutherland House
