History of Thetford...
Situated on the banks of the River Little Ouse, Thetford has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. In this article, we will delve into the fascinating history of Thetford and learn about the town's key events, landmarks and people.
Thetford was originally known as "Theodford" and was established by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century AD. It was an important settlement during the early Middle Ages and was mentioned in the Domesday Book, a record of the survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086. The town's location on the River Little Ouse made it an important trading centre for merchants, and it became a significant market town
in the medieval period.
One of the most significant events in Thetford's history occurred in the late 14th century when the town was ravaged by the Black Death, a deadly pandemic that killed millions of people across Europe. Thetford was hit particularly hard, and the population of the town was greatly reduced. However, the town gradually recovered and continued to flourish in the centuries that followed.
During the Tudor period, Thetford became an important centre of religious and political power. It was home to a number of influential figures, including the Duke of Norfolk, who was one of the most powerful nobles in the country. The town was also the site of a number of important religious buildings, including the Priory of St. Mary and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. These buildings played a significant role in the history of Thetford and helped to shape the town's character and culture.

as the town grew and modernized. The Industrial Revolution brought new technologies and industries to the area, including cotton mills, ironworks and breweries. The town's population also grew rapidly, and new houses and buildings were constructed to accommodate the growing number of residents.
One of the most famous figures associated with Thetford is the writer Thomas Paine, who was born in the town in 1737. Paine was an influential political thinker and activist who played a significant role in the American Revolution and the French Revolution. He is best known for his books "Common Sense" and "The Rights of Man", which advocated for democratic government and human rights. Paine's legacy is still celebrated in Thetford today, and there is a museum dedicated to his life and work in the town.
Another notable figure from Thetford's history is Maharajah Duleep Singh, who
lived in the town during the late 19th century. Singh was the last ruler of the Sikh Empire in India and was exiled to England after the British annexation of his kingdom. He settled in Thetford and became a prominent member of the local community, building a magnificent estate called Elveden Hall. Singh's story is a fascinating example of the international connections and diverse cultures that have shaped the history of Thetford. You can see a magnificent bronze memorial statue on Butten Island.
Today, Thetford is a thriving market town that is home to a rich array of historic landmarks and cultural attractions. Visitors to the town can explore the ruins of the medieval priory, visit the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulchre, or take a stroll through the Thetford Forest, one of the largest lowland forests in the UK. The town also boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, with regular concerts, festivals and exhibitions held throughout the year.
Thetford's history is a fascinating tale of triumphs and tragedies, of cultural diversity and political power, and of enduring legacies that continue to shape the town's identity today.
