Training to combat excessive drinking
As many as 36% of people increased their alcohol consumption during lockdown, according to a recent report. In a safety-critical industry such as fleet management, a drug and alcohol-free workplace remains an important factor in safe vehicle operation. Drinking alcohol impairs judgement, damages physical coordination and increases the likelihood of an accident.
While fleet managers are not required by law to screen employees for drugs and alcohol, employers are legally required to ensure the safety of their workers. Random drug or alcohol testing is a reliable way to ensure a business is compliant with the law, sending a powerful stay safe message to employees.
According to AlcoDigital, breathalysers and other testing devices have become increasingly cost effective and user friendly over the years. The company says that in the long term, screening policies present an investment well worth making.
“Setting up a testing programme is an important measure in supporting your workforce. But with so many screening methods available, it can be hard to know where to start, especially when Covid safety remains a primary concern,” said Suzannah Robin, alcohol and drug safety expert at AlcoDigital.
“A good first step is to book an accredited training course that will offer all the knowledge and practical skills necessary to implement screening to suit the specific requirements of individual businesses and workplaces.”
While face to face training has now resumed at AlcoDigital, the company also offers online ‘live’ training, providing comprehensive guidance, while remaining Covid-safe. Its Zoom webinars also allow remote staff to join the session from any location.
