Transition Woodbridge

School Crossing Patrol service celebrates its Platinum Jubilee

Harvest Fair serves up a Suffolk feast! A colourful display of winter squash welcomed visitors to Transition Woodbridge's Harvest Fair on October 7th. The warm autumn sun shone down on Whisstocks Place as local food producers, environmental groups, musicians and artists gathered to celebrate this traditionally significant time of year. Heritage apples, freshly baked bread, locally made honey, jams and preserves, organic vegetables, Tide Mill flour, a delicious taste of Suffolk's food landscape. As complex global supply chains become ever more stressed and uncertain, so the importance of a resilient regional food economy grows. By shopping and eating locally, we can improve our food security, create jobs in our area,

reduce food transport miles and use of protective packaging, and support British farmers and growers. We were excited to team up with Woodbridge Festival of Art & Music for the first time at this event. Live music from the likes of: East of the Sun, JS and the Lockerbillies and Maella created a lively atmosphere and energy in the square, whilst The Longshed hosted a very popular electricityfree pop-up art studio. It was wonderful to see children and adults alike building bug hotels, birdwatching over the Deben, experimenting with loom weaving and chatting to stallholders. At a time when food shopping has largely lost any kind of personal touch, the Fair allowed visitors to engage

with not just where but who their food comes from. Jane Healey (Transition Woodbridge Co-secretary) says: "It was a fantastic event. All the stallholders were very pleased to get up close and personal with local customers." Ben Osborne (Woodbridge Festival founder and DJ) adds: "The event highlighted local food producers, and the music and arts programme kept the crowds engaged - with the positive vibes spreading across the town well into the evening." As we approach Christmas, perhaps you can take some time to reflect on where your festive food and drink is coming from. Could you serve up a locally-sourced Christmas dinner, or wow your foodie friends and family with

gifts of Suffolk goodies? If you're stuck for ideas, take a look at our Local Food & Drink Project 2023 leaflet on: www. transitionwoodbridge.org.uk or pick one up in person at the Woodbridge Christmas Street Market on December 3rd. We are grateful to Woodbridge Town Council, East Suffolk Council and Arts Council England for supporting the Harvest Fair event.

was at its worst. They went on to employ 'active retired gentlemen' as 'traffic wardens', who wore white coats and peaked hats, as worn by park keepers at the time. The idea proved very popular and soon spread to other London boroughs. The SCP service was born when the Government recognised the value of having a service nationally that crossed children at busy and difficult locations. The service was officially created by the SCP Act in 1953. Many communities in Suffolk rely on their patrol, with our newest patrol site opening in Leiston in December 2022. Suffolk County Council are celebrating and marking the 70th anniversary of the School Crossing Patrol (SCP) service. The idea for the SCP came in the late 1940s when two road safety officers in the London boroughs of Dagenham and Barking recognised a growing problem with the safety of child pedestrians given the increasing volume of traffic on roads. At that time, around 90% of children walked to school unaccompanied, and also played out on the streets. Children were advised to ask an adult to see them across busy roads, but the road safety officers had the idea of 'official' adults to help children on their way to school at points where traffic

Common Ground Theatre Company

Common Ground are touring the region once again this Christmas and New Year, with another of their hilarious genrespoof panto alternatives. This year, they are mashing up amateur sleuthing, gangsters and werewolves. Renowned amateur sleuth and part-time dog trainer Miss. Jean Mimple takes a hiking tour of the Italian alps. In a remote hostelry, she meets Dr. Bridges,

assistant to the mysterious Professor Ramekin, who lives in nearby Castle Pandoro. One of the servants at the castle has been found torn into fettuccine. So, ignoring the locals' warnings of "The Ice Wolf", or "Bestia Gelato" (half man, half wolf, half frozen dessert) which has terrorised the region for several months, the plucky Miss Mimple sets off to investigate.

Audience members said of last year's show 'A Murder at St. Muttley's': "What a fabulous, funny show!" "A brilliant and entertaining evening" "Brilliant script and impeccable timing" "The mad cap style is an absolute winner! The schtick and 'business' actually gave me belly laughs, and I'm old enough to know better!" Common Ground has been touring East Anglia for the last 16 years, building up a loyal following for their "wonderfully whacky... terrifically original" (Libby Purves) style of music theatre. They've been doing a grand job of keeping small-scale theatre alive and well in East Anglia, presenting shows that are entertaining, first and foremost. The genre spoof Christmas shows they produce each year have become the go-to alternative to panto, described by Andrew Clarke in the EADT as: "A glorious piece of Christmas fun." Directors Pat Whymark and Julian Harries cut their teeth creating many Christmas productions for Eastern Angles

Theatre Co. They were the creative team behind 'Stoat Hall', 'The Mystery of St. Finnigan's Elbow' and many more, and it's that sense of playfulness that runs through all their work. As an actor, Julian will soon be seen on TV in the major new Sky historical drama 'Mary & George' (starring Julianne Moore) and in the next series of Father Brown (playing a mad novelist). He has performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal National Theatre and in the West End. The tour takes in: • Harkstead, Dec 13th. • Woodbridge, Dec 15th-16th. • Laxfield, Dec 19th. • Stowmarket, Dec 20th-23rd. • Felixstowe, Dec 27th-29th. • Gt. A plug-in diffuser (such as Feliway) can create a calming effect on anxious cats. It has been a particularly hectic year for all in the branch and as we approach the colder months, we are still taking in kittens! The so-called 'kitten season' has, in fact, extended a lot longer this year. Our branch phone and email boxes have been inundated with messages asking us to take in cats and kittens. Hopefully, Cats Protection's new subsidised neutering campaign will help alleviate future unwanted litters. If you're looking for help with the cost of neutering your cat, you might be able to use CPs reduced-cost neutering scheme. This service offers neutering and microchipping for those on benefits or low incomes for a contribution by the owner of just £10. You can find out more about this and participating vets at: www.cats.org.uk/what-we-do/ neutering/financial-assistance. It's firework time! Here's five ways to help your cat stay calm during fireworks season: • Keep your cat indoors after dark. It'll reduce the risk of them being spooked! • Create a safe space for your cat. A cardboard box lined with blankets is perfect. Cats feel safer higher up, placing the box on a sturdy shelf is even better. • Play music. Cats and loud noises don't necessarily mix and keeping a radio or TV can help if your cat gets scared from

Sae Wylfing is back home

Thanks to repair work by Woodbridge Boatyard, 'Sae Wylfing' (pictured above) is back home with the Riverside Trust. The half-length model of the famous burial ship was built 30 years ago and was in need of some TLC. Among other things, the boatyard has replaced eight long lengths of plank from her mid-section, so she's ready to go back on the water at Whisstocks Quay for a short time before winter sets in. Follow the Ship Planning for the Autumn term, presentation of this extremely popular education programme is being offered to schools across the region and elsewhere. Confirmed dates are November 6th-7th and November 13th in the Longshed. Six sessions will be spread over the morning and afternoon. These events are a collaborative effort from Woodbridge Riverside Trust and the Sutton Hoo Ship's Company. More Talks The next talk in the Collection

is on November 25th at 3pm in the John Gibbins Gallery, the Longshed. In a talk entitled 'Whisstocks Boatyard'. Sue Cox (née Whisstock) will talk about the boatyard which was her family's business from 1926 to 1990. She will be telling the story of how it all began and talking about some of the famous yachts built on the site. Tickets are £7 per person. For this fascinating trip down memory lane, book your tickets at: www. shorturl.at/ehry1. On December 17th at 11am, Dr. Sam Newton will be talking about the Anglo-Saxon calendar and the Yuletide Festival. More details next month. Looking ahead into next year the programme of talks continues with a wide range of interesting topics. See: www. woodbridgeriversidetrust.org/ wrt-talks-collection/ for details. Save the date! A Christmas family event is being planned in and around the Longshed on December 17th. More details to follow...

East Suffolk U3A Walking Netball Group has spaces for new players. We meet fortnightly on a Thursday morning at Ipswich School Sports Centre in Rushmere. A team of choreographers and Musical Director Jo King have crafted the huge range of musical styles into a seamless show. Jo said: "We have everything from swing to tap, jazz to ballet, carols and special medleys from hit musicals West Side Story and Disney's Newsies. There's truly something for everyone." After struggling for several years with insufficient accommodation space at Kelsale CEVC Primary School, for individual pupil and small groups interventions, to support children's academic and wellbeing needs, the school has just opened a two-room 'intervention' cabin in the school grounds to provide a safe, secure and inviting space for children and their teachers. Before that, school corridors were often used to teach these pupils, some needing one-toone care. The school dug deep into their own financial reserves to finance this cabin (£30,000) and is currently fundraising to provide the specialist resources required to improve the lives of children with special education needs and/or pastoral needs. Kelsale CEVC School has 159 pupils on roll, aged four to 11, with seven classes.

The head teacher, Mrs. Clare Wells, said: "We are indebted to our school bursar, Mrs. Nikki Lee, who has overseen this project from the start. Her brilliant financial planning and management has enabled us to provide this much needed facility. The cabin will provide a safe space for our pastoral team who offer drawing for talking, sandplay, specialist literacy support and other bespoke sessions to any of our children who require extra wellbeing support. The cabin will also be used for our new daily afterschool sessions (offering wrap-around care) which have been introduced to support the needs of our families since the beginning of the new autumn term". The official opening of the cabin by Kelsale and Yoxford District Councillor Mrs. Julia Ewart, coincided with World Mental Health Day, when children from the school also

participated in other sponsored events, including a day-long sponsored cycle marathon on static exercise bikes. Mrs. Ewart said: "I was delighted to launch The Cabin, when the children are celebrating World Mental Health Day. The space is going to be invaluable to give privacy and comfort when it's needed. I look to support the children by bringing together the donation of larger items and funds that will help develop The Cabin to its full potential." The school community are very much looking forward to using the new space. Mrs. Erin Morling, the pastoral support lead, said: "We're delighted by the support from parents and other members of the school community today and are excited to continue to find ways to raise money and awareness to continue the development of our pastoral service in an effort to reach and support as many children as possible."

Badminton in Kesgrave Woodbridge Badminton Club is back at Kesgrave High School for the winter season (September-April). Adult club night is 7:30pm to 10pm on Wednesday evenings, but please note that the sessions on November 15th and 22nd will NOT run and will be replaced by a session at 7:30pm on November 17th in the Kesgrave Community Hall (due to unavailability of the school sports hall). Juniors takes place 7pm to 8:30pm on Mondays, but is currently full, with a waiting

list. Adults can come along for a guest session for £6 to try us out, refundable if you join as a member. We welcome a range of abilities but unfortunately not complete beginners at the adult club. A current snapshot of items waiting to go back to their owners ranges from a Georgian door lock to a 1990's CD player, via a card table, barometer and a cuddly toy. We have more stuff to mend than people to mend it, and though it's not a bad problem to have, you can see we need all kinds of people to help out. So whatever your expertise or skill level, there's bound to be a role for you. Just as important as repair work is the admin side of things. As the Shed develops, there will be more sessions in the week, so people can help out at a time which suits them best. On a personal level, it's a chance to acquire and

develop skills, and work with like-minded individuals. The purposeful work makes for fun and fulfilling sessions. But it's also part of a wider movement towards sustainability and reducing waste. We can all play a part in that. Get in touch. For more information, visit our website: www.suffolkrepairshed.org or email: hello@suffolkrepairshed.org. Tax benefits and the festive spirit

Charity Christmas Card Shop opens in Woodbridge The traditional Charity Christmas Card Shop in Woodbridge opens at HSBC, 37 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, IP12 1AH, on October 23rd. The shop is organised by Woodbridge 41 Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The 41 Club organiser, Roger Parker commented: "We're looking forward to a great season selling cards and supporting many very worthwhile causes. Sending a Christmas card is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. I am very grateful to all the volunteers and customers who

support the shop." The shop stocks the largest selection of charity cards in Suffolk from over 20 different charities. This includes favourites such as: RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer, Barnardos, Blue Cross and Amnesty. Additional local charities include: St. Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Children's Hospices, Somersham Ward, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Suffolk Wildlife Trust. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, (9:30am to 5pm on Saturdays). Please do visit, you won't find a better selection!

As the holiday season approaches, many businesses are preparing to celebrate the festive period with their employees. From decorating the office to hosting memorable end of year parties, these seasonal festivities can also bring about some tax benefits that you may or may not be aware of. Trivial tax benefits are small perks that employers can provide to their employees without them incurring additional tax liabilities. These benefits are often seen to boost morale, improve workplace culture, and show appreciation to the workforce. Whilst these perks may not seem significant individually, they can add up and provide savings for both employers and employees. For businesses, hosting an annual party can be a taxdeductible expense if the 'annual function exemption' criteria are met. To qualify for this generous tax benefit, the event must be available to all employees and the cost per head must not exceed £150 (including VAT). This includes travel, accommodation and other associated costs that contribute to the fun! Employees will also benefit

from this as it will allow them to attend a festive celebration without worrying about additional tax liabilities. It's a brilliant way for employers to express gratitude to their hardworking teams. Annual parties aren't the only way to enjoy trivial tax benefits. Other common perks include small gifts, such as a hamper, a bottle of wine or a non-cash voucher, that can be given to employees. These gifts are exempt from Income Tax and National Insurance contributions if the cost of the benefit does not exceed £50 per employee (including VAT) and is not cash or a cash voucher. It is also important that the benefit is not provided as part of any contractual obligation or, in recognition of the employee's good performance in the workplace. In most instances, an employee can receive multiple trivial benefits throughout the year, as long as each one does not exceed the limit individually. However, where the employer is a close company, the exemption is capped at a total cost of £300 per tax year where the benefit is provided to an individual who is a director or other office holder

of the company (or a member of their family/household). You must take care not to go over the limits mentioned above, as even doing so by just a nominal amount, will mean you can no longer claim the tax exemptions. If you do overspend, the entire cost will be taxable rather than just the excess or the limits specified. By understanding HMRC's allowance and leveraging trivial tax benefits, you can save money, and enhance your employee satisfaction. Maintenance on the Green with White Bridge closed Since the 1770s when the New Reach waterway was dug for wherry traffic, there has always been a bridge at White Bridge. Was the bridge just for foot traffic? No... It's always been wide enough to accommodate passage by whoever owned the land on either side to cross with a cart, horse and other land management equipment. The current bridge is the latest in that long 250-year line of "accommodation" bridges. The landowner on both sides is now Halesworth Millennium Green Trust, which is the charity that holds the land for the local community. The volunteers who maintain the Green for you need to be able to get across the New Reach with mowers and other tools to keep maintaining the paths so that you can use them. We also need to keep the habitats in good heart for wildlife by haymaking and other conservation work. No need for horses and carts nowadays, just mowers and fully laden wheelbarrows, but these are

wider than simple foot traffic. So, the community needs White Bridge replaced like-for-like and we know that Suffolk County Council, who are responsible for the bridge, has embraced that need. Meanwhile, with the bridge closed, and after such a warm and wet growing season, the volunteers know that everywhere on the Green is a bit more wildand-woolly than usual. We'll keep on doing what we can within the restrictions of not being able to cross the bridge with equipment and we look forward to the day when the closure of White Bridge is a distant memory. Do keep letting us know of any exciting sightings. Have a look at the website (millenniumgreen. halesworth.net) which carries news and information, photos, wildlife records, history and geology. You can contact the Green directly on: thegreen@ halesworth.net and, please only in an emergency, on: 07743 772029.

Report from the Climate and Ecological Emergency Committee

There were 15 Woodbridge Shufflers in a field of over 2,000 runners who took part in the Ipswich Half Marathon in September. The annual race (which starts and finishes at Portman Road) is a challenging 13.1 mile run including a very long stretch up Freston hill around the 10 mile mark. All the Shufflers completed the race and it included two first timers; Ed Abbott and Matt Cawdron, with notable achievements from Ross McGill

finishing 26th overall and Ruth Acworth finishing first in her age category. Woodbridge Shufflers Running Club is not all about running half marathons. It offers social runs around Woodbridge and the local area for all ages and abilities on Tuesday evenings, Thursday afternoons and Sunday mornings. There are also junior sessions on Wednesdays, coaching sessions on Tuesdays and regular social events. www.woodbridge shufflers.org.uk

Did you know that all surgeries must have a patient participation group (PPG)? At Framfield House Surgery in Woodbridge, the PPG has an important relationship with the patients, the surgery and the professionals. We try to reflect the needs of patients by offering feedback and improving communications with the practice. We are a forum voicing concern and offer suggestions

about key health matters. We aim to be a critical friend. Our patients live in an area from Martlesham to Melton and surrounding villages. We particularly want to recruit new members in their 20's and young parents. They would be invited to attend our five midday face-to-face meetings each year, or to just be virtual members available for occasional email consultation on specific topics

door leafleting and we received sufficient interest to suggest a go ahead for Edwin and Warwick Avenue later in the autumn. And the CEEC committee were asked recently by the Planning committee to look into the process of applying for tree preservation orders (TPO's), to protect certain trees of interest. Given that a tree, any tree - but bigger / older the better - is the most efficient carbon capture device known to humankind (and it's organic), we wondered whether the process needs to be reversed, applications should be made, not to protect a specific tree, but as a one-off exception from a universal tree protection. It could take a while for this idea to filter upwards to the appropriate level of government!

Hello people of Woodbridge and beyond, people of the Deben estuary. Locally, our last CEEC meeting proposed to WTC a one-year ban of the use of glyphosate weed killer on the town council estate. We propose to review after a year to see how we managed without using such a controversial substance. And nationally, in October a quite comprehensive ban on first use plastic disposables came in to regulate an excessive 'plastic to landfill' route - you will begin to see the consequences locally in your takeaway meals' packaging. The "bring back trees to the avenues" project went out to consultation via door to

Woodbridge Flower Club We were delighted to welcome almost 70 members to our October meeting when the demonstrator was Brenda Tubb from Norfolk. Our competition was titled Halloween and this was well supported, although it's hoped that more beginners will take part next time. Brenda produced many beautiful arrangements while sharing with us some amusing stories about her family and friends. She also showed us two arrangements which did not need oasis and so were more environmentally friendly.

Her first arrangement was in a container but instead of foam, Brenda had made a grid at the top to support the flowers using Sellotape. This idea could be used easily and would work for a variety of pots and containers. Her second arrangement used glass tubes but to give it more colour, Brenda had covered the tubes with light fabric to blend in with the flowers. Next month will be our AGM, but on December 6th, we will meet again at Martlesham Village Hall where our demonstrator will be David White and his theme will be 'Christmas Cheer'.

An update from Framlingham Fellowship Our August meeting was a little different, a Punch and Judy show and ice creams. Our very grateful thanks to Pat Plant for entertaining us so well with a traditional Punch and Judy Show, which we enjoyed whilst eating our ice creams. The September meeting was a fascinating talk by Steve Everett on RSBP Minsmere. His presentation included video clips he had filmed of various insects which were included in the BBC Springwatch etc.

Steve explained the various insects to be found in Insect Alley, the water voles, badgers, deer and of course the birds to be found there. How lucky we are to have such a place nearby, managing and protecting different habitats for the benefit of wildlife. Our November 16th meeting will be Sheila from Callendar's Florist with a demonstration. Our meetings are open to all include refreshments and we look forward to seeing new

faces, meetings start at 2:30pm in The Westbury Centre, Fairfield Road, Framlingham. For further information, please email: framlingham-suffolk@ sja.org.uk. We look forward to welcoming our speakers to our meetings in 2024. On November 18th, we will be holding a coffee morning and sale from 10am to 12pm at The Westbury Centre, all very welcome. The Deben Estuary Management Plan 2023

Woodbridge School proud supporters of Suffolk Libraries' PAWSitivity campaign Last week, Woodbridge School had the pleasure of attending Suffolk Libraries' much anticipated PAWS-itivity auction at Trinity Park, where over 40 Library Labradors were auctioned, including 'Atticus' (pictured below), who had been sponsored by the School. The auction raised around £25,000 for Suffolk Libraries. As part of Suffolk Libraries' largest ever fundraising campaign, these sculptures were created to remind us how much positivity a library can b r i n g , raising

awareness of Suffolk Libraries as a charity that nurtures and supports communities. 'Atticus' is one of over 40 Labrador dog sculptures individually created by local artists, revealed for the first time at the Suffolk Show and exhibited in libraries across Suffolk throughout the summer. Woodbridge School's Labrador was designed and created by Sharon Teague, a local graphic designer and artist, and is based on the Anthony Horowitz book 'Magpie Murders' in which Woodbridge School features. Shona Norman ((Head of School) said: "Reading starts at a young age. Indeed, one of my earliest memories is going with my grandad to return some library books and being immersed in what he called his 'place of wonder'. From the very first days at our Prep School, children are introduced to

our delightful library in town, spending time there reading, simply enjoying the 'feel' of books and supporting our local community whenever we can. The decision to become a sponsor of one the PAWS-itivity Library Labradors was therefore an easy one, particularly given that the sculptures would not only highlight the libraries, but the work they do for people of all ages and the support they offer to communities across Suffolk." M o n e y raised through the auction will be used to help fund the continued delivery of a range of support, including nurturing literacy and providing warm spaces for people as well as improving health and wellbeing. Suffolk Libraries not only provides a place to meet, read, learn and relax, but also offers a place for those struggling with isolation, the cost of living and many other issues associated with the difficulties

many people face every day. With 42 buildings throughout Suffolk these libraries are a vital part of the communities they serve and work with, and the funds raised through PAWSitivity mean they can continue to provide the wonderful range of services on offer, as well as beautiful books to enjoy and share. You can read more about the campaign at www. suffolklibraries.co.uk/whats-on/ annual-events/paws-itivity. 'Atticus' was designed by local graphic designer and artist Sharon Teague

is very apt in my case. I struggle with doing anything slow and have zero coordination. No hope whatsoever. Lynn, Bronwyn and Geraldine performed wonderfully well and recommended the benefits to improve strength and balance. Members were encouraged to give it a try, but I will stick to watching, I think. We then enjoyed the huge selection of nibbles with coffee and time to chat. This was followed by the presentation of prizes for our Practice Piece Competition for the past year. First prize went to Jan Richardson, second prize to Sue Cotton and third prize to Mandy Pryke. The novice class winner was Jane Addison. Congratulations to all our winners! The presentation of Long Service Badges by our President Elsie Leeding went to: Joy Andrews for 25 years as well as Val Green, Beryl Leech and Bronwyn Lummis for 40 years. A terrific achievement ladies. Be very proud of yourselves as we are of you. Chairman June then gave her report. Members and committee were all thanked for their work in making our club the successful one it is. Members were asked to put forward ideas of activities, visits, speakers and demonstrations they'd like. She also asked for everyone to consider joining us on the committee. Firstly to come and see what goes on. There will be no arms bent at this club.

Our Treasurer Sue has done a sterling job throughout the year, keeping us on the straight and narrow. Luckily, we managed to make a small gain of £166.91 with her careful planning. Thank you Sue, we know it's not an easy position. It was proposed by Sue that we increase the yearly subscriptions to £29 per year to cover the increased costs of running the club. Members were asked if this was acceptable, and Val Green spoke from the floor to propose it be increased to £30 a year. This was unanimously agreed by all present. It was also proposed that visitors be charged £5 per meeting but be encouraged to join. common purpose of the DEP which is to "Safeguard, Enhance and Promote the special qualities of the estuary for the benefit of all." While our first Estuary Plan in 2015 demonstrated the importance of integrated planning across the entire estuary, the new Plan will focus on 'Change - climate, community, and culture'. Beyond the obvious challenges of dealing with climate change, more people now live in and visit the area and what they want from and how they use the river are different. Local

land ownership has changed, with less land devoted to agriculture and more to leisure/nature. The focus areas and draft outline are already shown on the website with teams being formed based upon the interests, experience and expertise of our members. We will be asking many of you to help develop and refine the updated Plan. Contact us with your thoughts or comments via the website. Thomas Yeung, Chair of DEP www.debenestuary partnership.org

"Big enough to cope, small enough to care"

Wickham Market Flower Club Report on AGM meeting dated September 28th, 2023. Our lovely Chairman June welcomed all present to the meeting. It was brilliant to see so many members and guests at an AGM along with all the tasty plates of nibbles. After the usual health and safety notices we got on with the meeting. The committee had come to a decision that we would not decide on a Chairmans Charity until the AGM next year when we would have a better idea of the state of our accounts. Unfortunately, with everything increasing in price we will have to be more aware of how we use our available funds. Tickets were available from Sue for our Open Meeting on November 23rd. Please contact her on 07786 942450 or 01394 460560 to book. These must be booked and paid for before the event please. It is £5 for members and £10 for guests. The demonstrator is Jacqui Arnold and it is our last meeting for 2023 so do come and bring a couple of friends. Members were encouraged to look online at the "Spotlight East" magazine which is jam packed full of interesting activities and ideas. Our speaker for the evening was Lyn Eatwell, who gave us a beautiful relaxing demonstration of Tai Chi. However for people like me, the accompanying music was easier to listen too than learning the movements myself. The saying "The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing"

A lot has happened at the Deben Estuary Partnership over the past few months. At our General Meeting in September, the updated Constitution was approved. I was confirmed as Chair with Colin Nicholson as Vice Chair. We have a new website, logo and newsletter. Not everything is new... We still have an excellent group of partners, strong support from the Environment Agency and other institutional agencies and councils, and a beautiful estuary to enjoy and protect. The Management Structure indicates how we are operating with no single organisation having the right to hold sway over another, a true "Partnership of Equals". It is important for organisations and groups to unite around the

Would you like to receive our activity sheets for preschool aged children?

)

At the moment, we are sending out free activity sheets by email/post on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month during term time, for the children to enjoy doing with their family/ carers, instead of meeting in St. Michael's Church Centre, Martlesham Heath. The last two activity sheets were about psalms. The first was a joyful one, Psalm 150, which praises God and says we can talk to Him about anything and praise him by singing and playing instruments. There was a trumpet to colour and cut out to make into a trumpet shape, blow into it and make a sound. There was also a song with actions praising God. The second was Psalm 139 which was about how God knows

The summer cruising season is officially over, although hardy members are still enjoying day sails and voyaging further afield before the boats are laid up for winter. The on-shore activities are now taking precedence, with the first convivial Wednesday supper enjoyed by one and all. Members had the chance to socialise and relish the delicious chicken cobbler and roasted vegetables in the club house overlooking the River Deben, which is the focus of the winter social scene. The laying up supper was a more formal occasion, under the auspices of Rosemary and her team, with a scrumptious three course meal, and an array of delectable puddings. The Thursday walks are enjoyed by members and their

dogs, being a pleasant stroll around the verdant Suffolk countryside, with a welcome meal at a local pub. The first walk of the season was around the coast and heaths of Thorpeness lead by Neil, and the second walk started at Campsea Ashe exploring the area led by William. The annual Boat Jumble was a chance for members to sell all and sundry boat gear, and was very popular. The first of the autumn talks was by Andy Beharrell from the Woolverstone Project (a worthwhile charity ensuring those with disabilities can enjoy sailing), on shipwrecks of East Anglia, a fascinating history of the numerous wrecks on our coasts, from Roman times to the WWII submarines. The November talk was an intriguing

glimpse of a cruise around Scapa Flow. On shore training courses such as the Day Skipper and DSC VHF radio are run from the club house, and offer an excellent introduction to the theory side. The AGM is in November and the new Commodore and committee members are elected and reports given as to the year's activities. Although the official cruising season is over this year, the club still has a thriving winter social scene. If you have an interest in all things nautical, and are the past or present owner of a motor boat or yacht, please do look at the Woodbridge Cruising Club website: www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org. New members are always welcome.
