Ayesha and Fernando’s relationship withstood the tribulations of Covid

yesha and Fernando met in Peru while she was on a holiday travelling around the country and he was working as an international tour guide at the time. “Despite how cliché it sounds, there was an instant connection,” shares Ayesha. “Despite all of the odds, including travel restrictions for two years during Covid, we never once looked back.” Fernando asked Ayesha to marry him several times a day a year after they met, “Just to check I would definitely say yes!” she laughs. The pandemic meant Fernando became stuck in South America (with the ring!), so the official proposal came when he was back in the UK and they were having dinner in Amazonica London where he got down on one knee. “It was the closest he could make it to being back in Peru – one of our favourite memories together!” shares Ayesha. The big date was set, 25th October 2021 with Fennes, in Braintree, setting the scene and the finer details encompassing a blush, cream and gold colour scheme. Here, Ayesha tells us more about their day...

The place names were little wooden keepsakes lasered individually for our guests.

The bridesmaids wore dresses in a blush/taupe shade in different styles. One was long-sleeved, another was a knee-length wrap dress in all-over sequin, there was a maternity version and two v-neck cap-sleeved versions. Everyone commented on how stunning the bridesmaids’ dresses were – they were perfect for October and beautifully reflected the Autumn sun on the day!

Our celebrant wrote a very unique cere mony for us that incorporated some funny and special moments as part of a unity candle ceremony. We were also enco uraged and supported to say our own vows, and we’re so happy we did this. Having been in a long-distance relationship for two year s with someone from a red zone country isn’t for the faint-hearted . I think neither us of us could believe we were actually getting mar ried.

We had the classic Fennes menu: roasted butternut squash and red pepper soup, roast breast of chicken with sage and onion stuffing, baconwrapped chipolatas and crispy herb roasted potatoes and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Our canapés were halloumi, wedges and sausage topped with mash for autumnal warmth.

REAL WEDDING

ianne and James met in modern fashion online through a dating app. “I originally ‘friend zoned’ him for seven months,” recalls Lianne. “Never meeting in person but chatting over social media in that time. After a conversation with him online one day, I realised we had a lot in common and I couldn’t believe I had left it so long to actually meet him!” Arranging their first date, a meet up in Chelmsford, they hit it off immediately. A walk around a park turned in to shopping and lunch, with conversation still flowing they headed to the cinema and went for dinner – nine whole hours later the date ended and, as they say, the rest is history! James proposed to Lianne in her parents’ garden, in front of a big tree which she used to love to play around as a kid. “It was August 9th 2020 and a baking hot day,” shares Lianne. “We drove to my parents’ house and I thought it was just going to be a chilled afternoon. We got there and my dad said ‘Lianne come and take a walk down the garden, I want to show you what I’ve been growing in the polytunnel’. He’s a keen gardener and always likes to show me his latest vegetable/fruit that he has grown. So, dad, James and I walked down the garden, dad then said ‘Oh I’ve forgot something! You two keep walking and I’ll be right back’. As James and I walked down the garden he turned to me in front of the big tree and there it was decorated in flowers, a bottle of champagne, choccies and music playing. He bent down on one knee and asked me to marry him! “It was a complete surprise, I was so overwhelmed and when we walked back up to the house James’ parents were there plus my nan, grandad and brother. Little did I know my dad had set up a secret camera and recorded the whole thing!” The big date was set, 10th June 2021, with a ceremony at St. Peters Church Coggeshall and reception at Markshall Estate, Coggeshall, Essex. “Due to the pandemic, I had to shut my business for four months over the winter so I turned all my attention to my wedding and planned it like full time job. I absolutely loved it!” shares Lianne.

SETTING THE SCENE Having always dreamed of getting married in Coggeshall Church, it was Lianne’s first choice of ceremony venue, “It’s just so beautiful and magical,” adds Lianne. Wanting the day to be classy and romantic, their chosen reception venue also had to have plenty of outdoor space they could utilise for their June wedding. “Markshall is absolutely stunning, the grounds are gorgeous and it has a very welcoming, cosy vibe inside. Even though we were only allowed 30 guests at the time it still didn’t feel too big with the way I laid it out.” Absolutely adoring flowers, the bride opted for a mix of real and faux blooms. Each table had a centrepiece and was named after a country garden flower: peony, lavender, sweet pea and so on. “The top table had a huge runner of real flowers,” shares Lianne, “and at the side of the top table we had faux cherry trees in ivory. We utilised this by also using them in the church for the ceremony. Above the top table we had two rings of flowers, this was to symbolise the wedding rings. We had real flowers around the little outdoor sun shelter, which is where we let our harpist play during the reception drinks. Finally, we decide to use a company to cover the ceiling in ivory drapes and the florist then attached faux ivory and lilac wisteria inbetween to give a romantic closed-in look.” Due to the pandemic, meaning they had less guests on the same budget, the couple opted to treat their guests with lots of little extras. In keeping with the theme, each guest received a favour which was a little succulent plant and a gift bag full of little goodies. “We kept with the rustic theme and all the table plans, menus, invites, place names etc, all had the same wood-effect design with fairylights and flowers on them in ivory,” adds Lianne. “As a last-minute thing I decided to set up a prosecco bar with sweets, edible flowers and different flavour liquors. Also, I can’t not mention the cake which was amazing.” The

couple’s cake was a four-tier design, the bottom tier was ‘death by chocolate’ and coconut, the middle was luxury lemon (with Limoncello in it), and the top was Baileys Irish cream. “One tier was a hollow heart made out of polystyrene, covered in icing with our initials hanging down in the centre,” adds Lianne. “We also had a cake topper made out of clay which looked like us.”

LOOKING THE PART Lianne wore a slim-fit ivory-toned dress featuring lots of lace, sparkle and a big train. “I wore a pearl necklace and earrings, with ivory-hued shoes with delicate bits of sparkle on them too,” shares Lianne. “In addition, I had a chapel-length veil handmade by a lady in Colchester and she embroidered the words ‘From this moment on, life has begun’, with little flowers either side. These were the same words in the song for our first dance (and also what was playing when James proposed).” Wanting to feel relaxed and comfortable in the evening, Lianne changed into a shorter dress for her father-daughter dance and the first dance ‒ for which they performed a waltz so needed to be able to move! James chose a classic top hat and tails combo, while the best man, usher and groomsmen all looked very dapper in their suits. The father-of-the-bride and the father-of-the-groom also wore a morning suit, minus the hat, to keep the look formal. “My bridesmaids wore a silvery/lavender-coloured dress,” adds Lianne. “Which I did have a little panic they wouldn’t fit but they did! I also bought silver jewellery to go with their outfits.”

LET’S PARTY With plenty of time on her hands during lockdown, Lianne kept busy making lots of items for their wedding day to entertain the guests. From outdoor games, matching the colour scheme of course, such as hearts and kisses, hook the duck and ring toss, to a painted wooden frame which she hung white flowers from to be used as a backdrop for the guests to take photos with a polaroid camera. Lianne also bought a load of inflatables and put them in a crate for guests to have fun with on the dancefloor. For evening entertainment, the couple opted for a DJ, “It was the early stages of things easing with lockdown ending so everyone was actually so happy to see each other and we all danced, drank and was merry the whole evening,” remembers Lianne. “The day for me went by in a daze! I remember sitting in the car with my dad and I asked him how he felt and he said he felt like he wasn’t there, it was all happening so quickly and in all honestly that’s how I felt too!” shares Lianne. “I wish I could do it all again, I loved every minute!” “The parts that stood out to me the most were sitting in the car with my dad, seeing James at the end of the aisle smiling at me and seeing all of our family and close friends together for the first time in what felt like a decade! It was amazing!”

harlie and Sam met when they were just children in Year Seven at secondary school when they ended up in the same tutor group. “I was attracted to Charlie’s kind ways and handsome looks,” shares Sam. “Charlie says it was my personality and good looks that he found attractive too, and we finally got together in Year 11 in 2001!” Charlie spontaneously proposed in low-key fashion on the 4th October 2009; it was one evening just before the couple went to bed. Enjoying a long engagement, the big date was finally set for 12th August 2022, with Tuffon Hall in Sible Hedingham, Essex setting the scene. Here, Sam tells us more about their day... 47

We had only 12 guests including our parents, step parents and our children.

The centrepiece was mixed foilage with brass candlesticks, while my bouquet was spray roses, peonies, dahlias, hydrangeas and eucalyptus.

“Our favours were personalised wine stoppers and the guest place settings were names on an agate coaster.”

Tuffon Hall had the whole package, the Wine Cellar Barn’s atmosphere was mesmerising but also the vineyard itself is just amazing – you’d never believe on a sunny day it was Essex! I wore a Mori Lee A-line dress called Katie. The front and back of the dress were just stunning, no matter what way you looked at the dress it was just perfect.

Charlie wore a navy linen Moss Bros Suit with a pink blush tie and Paul Smith Tan shoes. The father-of-the-bride wore the same suit as Charlie with no waistcoat so the groom stood out.

I wore a Donna Crain diamanté vine headdress, along with a cathedral-length veil. To finish off I wore Jenny Packham wedges. We had cascading flower plinths for the ceremony, aisle runners of meadow flowers and trailing eucalyptus beam with hanging tealight glass baubles. 48

“Before the ceremony, during and for a short while after, we had a harpist play and had lawn games for the boys.”

I was very excited, emotional and nervous on the day. Charlie felt excited, nervous and amazed it was finally happening.

Our two boys wore white grandad collar shirts with navy trousers and tan shoes.

Our first dance stood out to us as it wasn’t something we was going to do as there was only a small group of us. Also, a memorable moment for Charlie was seeing me at the end of the aisle.

Our eldest son’s speech was so special there was not a dry eye in the barn! 49

“We had canapés of pheasant sliders, bang bang chicken satays and scallops with pancetta. The wedding breakfast was beef carpaccio to start, West Mersea shoulder of lamb with seasonal vegetables and a giant profiterole for dessert.”

Chloe, our florist from Lady Green Leaves, created amazing arrangements! That moment when I walked down the aisle arm in arm with my dad the décor took my breath away. Sarah the wedding planner was also brilliant always there to help and went above and beyond.

Don’t organise a wedding during a world pandemic! I should be a pro at organising, as this was our third wedding venue and third destination but my tip would be: always be opened minded!

hoot coordinators Sam Easter and Marina Moore, of Beautiful You and Bridal Hair by Marina respectively, wanted to create a styled shoot that looked luxurious, frosty, yet accessible. Set at Crondon Park’s The Baronial Hall, a fine example of a Tudor/Jacobean barn with a truly special atmosphere, Sam shares more about her inspiration. “We focused on a white and green colour scheme which was reflected in the highquality silk flowers, supplied and designed by the florist, boasting a mixture of crisp white flowers including hydrangea, contrasted with frosted green foliage still staying true to the warmth that many brides love for their wedding day. “With an incredible supplier team on board, we aimed to create a world that blended fashionforward elements with a luxurious twist, while still retaining little details that couples could recreate for their wedding. “The ice-white palette, complete with lighted candles in glass jars, frosted green foliage snow and little touches of sparkle, interspersed throughout the scheme giving a gentle feel of winter. The incredible table setting was placed below a frosted willow tree, the perfect scene for a romantic banquet! The styling creates a magical feel with glassware and silver place settings, shortbread biscuit snowflakes and mini meringues, not forgetting the decorative crisp white menu cards and frosted glass table plan. Of course, no banquet is complete without a stunning cake and the simplicity and elegance here was just beautiful. “The hair and make-up for our model, Emily, was achieved with outstanding Hollywood waves and elegant timeless make-up that complemented the beautiful dresses supplied from Martels Bridal Boutique – all encompassed the spirit of our ice queen! “We wanted to gather a group of creative wedding suppliers to bring the ideas to life, and every business involved in our shoot contributed with their own ideas making it a success! Looking back at our photos, captured perfectly by Hannah Victoria our very talented photographer, we certainly turned the dream in to reality.”

fter a very tough 2020 we wanted to start 2021 with a very bright and uplifting shoot, opting for a colour palette of lemon, pink, orange and green,” shares shoot coordinator and photographer Whitney Lloyd. “We wanted to focus on a happy summer ahead, with Braxted Park’s gorgeous outside space providing the perfect backdrop for our al fresco-themed shoot.” With many couples in 2020 and 2021 cancelling their abroad weddings, this editorial is the perfect example of how you can have a stylish Mediterranean-feel wedding in Essex. “We were also very keen to include all local suppliers, in order to support local businesses and fellow wedding professionals in recovering from the pandemic. We speak to some of Essex’s finest photographers about their passions, the last year and find out what they think 2022 will hold....

MATT WING OF MATT WING PHOTOGRAPHY Matt’s background: I grew up in Truro, Cornwall with a huge passion for football. I used to be fascinated by old black/white football books and loved the photos. I used to cut the pages out and stick them on my wall! I guess my love of photography started there! I went to Plymouth University and got a degree in Action Photography before moving to Essex with my wife and family. I’ve now been photographing weddings for 12 years. Photography style: Because of my sports photography background, I tend to shoot differently from most other wedding photographers. I like to shoot on longer, faster lenses for most of the day and allow the action to take place with minimal interruption and posing. I’m very much of the opinion that I’m not there to conduct or direct your day. Standout moment of 2021: It’s been so full-on with weddings this year I’ve hardly had time to stop and think. There was a random moment in August, when I remember just stopping and looking at everyone enjoying

themselves during a drinks reception and thinking how everything seems fine in the world suddenly. This year has certainly been one for partying and letting your hair down and you can sense this when the dancefloors open. Favourite snap: It’s so hard to pick a ‘favourite’ image. I tend to favour images that test my technical skillset whilst also giving a real moment. This chosen image was even more difficult by doing it in almost pitch black! Shooting this on a long lens, some 20 yards away to give the lovely dropoff in focus behind the couple whilst they’re walking towards you through 80 sparklers is a tough shot to take. I love this one. Looking ahead to 2022: Lots more of the party spirit. People have really embraced the freedom of weddings after the lockdowns and I pray we see more of it next year. SOPHIE OLDHAMSTEAD OF SOPHIE OLDHAMSTEAD PHOTOGRAPHY Sophie’s background: I’ve always been fascinated by photography. Looking through photo albums and boxes full of old photos that belonged to my parents and grandparents is one of my favourite memories as a child; when I became a mother myself those photos held even more meaning. It was having my daughter that really pushed me to photograph other people too. I gave it a go and never looked back since. I can’t imagine doing anything else, knowing I’m taking photos that will be treasured for generations to come means the world to me! Photography style: I’m a super-relaxed and hands-off type of wedding photographer. I’m fast, detail orientated and I think my job is way more than just taking your photos. I want your memory of the day to be the absolute best it can be so I’m happy to help however needed (I’ve sewed a bridesmaid into a dress more than once just as an example!). I feel very strongly that having beautiful photos do not need to take forever. Candid moments of you with your family and friends are just as important, so I like to make sure you have as much of that time together as possible! Standout moment of 2021: This sounds so cliché I know, but honestly every single moment has been incredible. I always knew I loved what I did but to have it taken away so suddenly last year really hit home. I’m so invested in my couples and to see them all have to deal with so much upset and disappointment in 2020 meant that this year I was even more attached than I usually am! I breathed a huge sigh of relief with every first kiss as a married couple that another one had finally got married. The focus really shifted I think this year to those moments we missed so much, the hugs, kisses and celebrations this year were just off the charts. Those hugs were a long time coming!

HANNAH VICTORIA OF HANNAH VICTORIA PHOTOGRAPHY Hannah’s background: I first found my passion for wedding photography whilst working in Mallorca in 2011. I had previously studied Art and Design at University but had no idea what I really wanted to do. Whilst I was in Mallorca I met a guy who needed some assistance at a wedding, so I nervously (and a little reluctantly) went along to help as best I could! To my delight, I was completely and utterly hooked on capturing the whole magic and beauty of the day from start to finish.

Favourite snap: Picking a favourite image is like picking a favourite child! It’s so hard as I could give you 100 images I absolutely love from this year, and it changes often, but this is one of my favourites. My first ‘unrestricted’ wedding since 2019 plus, after a few postponements, I think the complete joy across all their faces really sums up the whole season for me. It was full of joy! Looking ahead to 2022: I think we’ll see the focus being shifted more onto the sentimental element of weddings. Not that I think it was ever really lost but I’ve really noticed the little touches this year more than ever to family traditions, family who can’t be with us and those who’ve done so much for the couple. Finally I had found my passion. Fast forward a few years, that guy is now my husband and over the past ten years we have built up two successful photography business working at many prestigious venues with high profile clients between the UK and Mallorca. Photography style: I have a fly on the wall approach! I try to be as discreet as possible on the day itself, with as little interference as possible. Natural unposed photos are my favourite, using the natural light. I like to listen to my clients’ requirements as every couple is different. The amount of time we spend on traditional photos is completely up to the couple, I like to be flexible. Standout moment of 2021: After losing a lot of international work due to the pandemic I decided to connect with other local photographers in Essex. It’s been so valuable to work with so many talented photographers in the area and to learn from each other. Connecting with other suppliers has been amazing and has reminded me to never stop learning your craft, there is always something new to learn. Favourite snap: Lucy and Ben’s big day, originally was going to be abroad but it got postponed three times, they decided to tie the knot at Crondon Park. I love the ‘we finally did it’ look on their happy faces! Looking ahead to 2022: More glitz, more glamour, more dancing, more laughter, more guests and more wonderful memories to be captured. Andy’s background: I’m a loving father and husband who’s a sucker for romance, meaning wedding photography is the perfect job for me. It all started many moons ago when I would assist my late grandfather – this is where the passion started. Since then I have surrounded myself with the best of the best from the photography world who I strive to be amongst. Meaning the training and competition entries strive me to get better and better. Photography style: Relaxed, fun and honest. I’m delighted that a common comment in our reviews is ‘Andy made us feel so relaxed!’. I understand the importance of it feeling natural, and why should it not be fun too? Once couples are relaxed its very easy to get those ‘wow’ photos, where they often can’t believe it’s them, but if it’s real and honest, it’s simply perfect.

Standout moment of 2021: The pure love and joy within people has been amazing to see this year. The importance of family as been the standout moment at most weddings; I have witnessed the first meeting or reuniting of family members since the pandemic started in March 2020. Favourite snap: My favourite moment this year was when a dinosaur appeared on the dancefloor dancing, everyone was enjoying the moment but with no clue as to whom it was or where they had come from. There was pure delight when the bride appeared from inside the costume still in her wedding dress! The noise and cheer will stick with me forever, this is why I have the best job in the world. Looking ahead to 2022: What’s been noticeable is entertainment, it’s gone up a gear and I expect this to continue in 2022. I think couples are showing this area a lot more attention and using the wedding budget wisely. Favourite snap of 2021: It was a pleasure going back over a year’s worth of issues of An Essex Wedding, it’s no easy task to pick a favourite image – I now know how our photographers feel ‒ as we love each and every one of our real wedding couples. However, I have selected this beauty from issue 100. Not only was the September/ October issue 100 a massive milestone for us here at An Essex Wedding, but it had some gorgeous real life weddings in it. This shot was from Caroline and Gary Williams’s wedding at Hutton Poplars Hall and Hutton Hall. It encompasses everything for me in a wedding picture; a true moment in time that should be private between the couple yet as viewers we get to peek in from a distance. Beautiful.

Standout moment of 2021: After such a difficult 18 months for the wedding industry, a standout moment for me was at one of our first County Wedding Events in 2021. It was in July, after the government announcement that all restrictions were lifted and it took place at stunning Essex wedding venue Braxted Park. It was so nice to see all of the suppliers on the day, to socialise and talk business and everyone was in great spirits pleased to be all back doing what we love.

ALL WHITE NOW I’m overwhelmed with the variations of white and ivory wedding dresses; with so many shades, how do I know which one will complement my skin tone? When you walk into a wedding boutique and are confronted by a sea of white and cream it can seem overwhelming. However, once you look closely there is quite a difference in the tone of colour used. Up close they could be crisp white, ivory, oyster, cream, antique white or soft white. Each colour will have a different effect when worn against the skin, depending on whether your underlying skin tone is warm or cool. When selecting the colour, look closely at what happens to your eyes and your pallor. Compare a crisp white with a warm cream for instance and you might notice that one makes your eyes pop and your complexion look bright and fresh. The wrong colour against the face can make us look older and pallor — obviously, something to avoid on your special day! It’s a good idea to think about the make-up colours that you will be using too. If your make-up and dress colour are in your best tones that are complementary to your skin tone, that’s the surest way to look radiant and glowing. The only true way to discover your underlying skin tone is to have a colour analysis session with a reputable consultant. What’s hot in the world of wedding décor in 2022? REGENCY SPLENDOUR

What started out as a quiet guilty pleasure, Netflix’s Bridgerton soon catapulted in to the mainstream and became an overnight obsession – all thanks to lockdown too when we were all looking for some escapism! Viewers fell in love with, and became fascinated by, the regency period of Bridgerton; the Duke of Hastings fast-becoming the modern day Mr Darcy. Bridgerton-inspired weddings are set to be huge in 2022 think venues, table settings, stationery, menu choices and cake designs to name but a few of the elements that can reflect the pomp and splendour Georgian elegance of the era. The standout feel of the Netflix drama is its countryside charm and popular aesthetically pleasing garden spaces, creating at its core reveries of ‘Britishness’ which viewers find appealing and even dreamlike. Couples planning their wedding days can encompass the theme by focusing on beautiful floral decorations of English country roses and trailing wisteria, velvet elements for the tables and draping, gold embellishments and splashes of regal colours such as blues and purples ‒ these hues can be teamed with the ever so-popular pastel palettes that are still reigning supreme. The on-the-day stationery elements, the menus, place names and welcome signs and so on, can be in a handwritten font on vintage papers with pretty hand-painted detailing – all perfectly displayed on the tables set up for an afternoon tea with vintage china tablescapes.

BACK TO NATURE Although weddings in 2020 and 2021 were forced outside due to the pandemic, this trend of al fresco entertaining is set stay with couples now willingly embracing their new-found appreciation of nature and outdoor events. Selecting a venue with walled gardens means you can use the space yet the enclosed proximity gives an exclusive feel to the wedding party. Al fresco settings can be complemented by simple nature-inspired décor, plenty of luscious greenery reflective of the English countryside or the garden setting ‒ embrace the season with your choices. Use English ivy and vines for greenery across all styling elements such as lining the aisle indoor or out. Dried flowers are also experiencing a bit of a revival, not only are they cost-effective and eco-friendly, but dried blooms incorporate earthy tones in a way that’s really quite beautiful.

INTIMATE/MICRO Yes the pandemic meant couples had to get ruthless with a figurative pair of scissors and chop their guest numbers in half (or less!), however, many witnesses to this, and soon-to-be weds themselves, actually realised how beautiful smaller weddings can be: quality over quantity! Luxury flowers, indulgent food choices, extra décor and awesome entertainment were all a result of smaller numbers but the same budget. Couples are wanting to spend more on the things they love and the people they love most. With intimate weddings on the increase, couples will look for extra ways to impress and spoil their guests with great food and drink, extra gifts, luxury table settings and favours, and enjoy the wedding over multiple days. Similarly, with smaller guest lists in luxury venue means you can get creative with your table layouts, 10 round tables of 10 – how boring! MINDFUL WEDDINGS Did you know, an average wedding produces hundreds of pounds of waste and tons (literally!) of C02 emissions! In these ecoconscious times we live in, couples are looking at how they can reduce the waste and carbon footprint of their wedding day. This means cutting back on unnecessary waste and trying to be as ecofriendly as possible; especially after multiple lockdowns also showed us how the world benefitted – clear skies in Tokyo and clear canals in Italy remember? Wedding venues are being greener and becoming more sustainable, couples can choose local and upcycle items. Pre- or post-wedding day, why not offer wedding flowers away to good causes or give to a local care home? Going plastic-free on your big day is an easy swap, and why not offer to ‘replant trees’ as a wedding favour?

For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.

WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay.
