I was greeted with a glass of wine as I checked into this boutique hotel offering laid-back luxury in a stunning selection of 55 rooms and suites, from the elegantly furnished Classic and Culture Rooms to the three signature suites. A highlight for honeymooners, and my home-from-home for the night, was the Sutton Suite decorated with plush furnishings and boasting a super kingsize bed that guaranteed my beauty sleep! I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the vintage-inspired copper freestanding bathtub that takes centre stage, perched on a platform under the large sash window showcasing far-flung views of the North Wessex Downs.
DINE IN STYLE
A highlight for me was the mouth-watering Highclere Afternoon Tea served in the opulent Orangery, flanked by the stunning grounds. I tucked into finger sandwiches, scones and sweet treats washed down with a glass of champagne and a personal touch was meeting the chef who prepared some vegan and gluten-free alternatives. At the heart of the hotel is the 1772 Brasserie where great food is paired with fine wine from the wine cellar, chosen by the sommelier and enjoyed against the backdrop of a live pianist on certain nights (wine tasting and vineyard tours are also available). Delicious dishes on the supper menu include the market fish of the day while avocado, eggs and hummus on sourdough provides fuel for the day at breakfast. Diners can also enjoy fine dining at Yu, the pan-Asian restaurant and takeaway.

MADE FOR ROMANCE REST AND REJUVENATE I was excited to check into the Signet Spa (partnered with GAIA Skincare) to experience their new Spa Day package where the wellness journey starts from the moment guests arrive. After taking the plunge in the heated outdoor pool, I was treated to a head, neck and shoulder massage that my talented therapist, Joanna expertly performed. Other beauty must-tries on the bespoke treatment menu are the personalised Made for You and Mother to Be massages, the indulgent Renewed Recovery Face Therapy and an Ananda Face Therapy, fab for brides. After a soak in the indoor hydrotherapy pool, it was time to chill out in the aroma steam room and Himalayan salt sauna, perfect for a pre-wedding pamper. There’s also a salt flotation pod that guests can try. Fitness lovers can book a yoga, pilates or dance class (or borrow racquets to test their tennis skills) and there are also electric bikes for hire.

Lucy Musselwhite and Harvey Bradley married on the 4th of March 2023 at Lillibrooke Manor in Maidenhead. 34

ucy and Harvey met at a friend’s wedding in 2016 when Lucy was a bridesmaid and Harvey was a groomsman. “We met the day before the wedding and immediately hit it off,” Lucy tells us. Harvey adds, “I spent the morning of the wedding wondering if it was ok to ask the groom if Lucy was single! She looked stunning as a bridesmaid and it soon became clear that there was something special between us.”
REAL WEDDINGS
POPPING THE QUESTION Harvey proposed to Lucy in December 2021. “He had chosen to ask me to marry him in Hampstead Heath, close to where we first lived together in London which is a special place for us,” Lucy says. “We walked for two hours before Harvey popped the question against the backdrop of the spectacular view. Our dog, Indy, was also in attendance - although he did run off at the exact moment to go and play with another dog!”
SETTING THE SCENE The aesthetic of Lillibrooke Manor in Berkshire was exactly what the couple wanted for their English country wedding. “It’s a classic country manor with an attractive barn which allowed us to host the majority of our celebration,” Lucy tells us. “The reputation of the venue in organising a wedding and the quality of the service and food also helped to seal the deal. Plus, because our spring wedding date was in early March, it was the perfect choice for combining indoor and outdoor spaces as the weather dictated. We both wanted to get married close to where we live together rather than closer to where one of us had grown up.” Lucy and Harvey loved their ceremony which was made even more special because Harvey surprised her by standing at the front of the

“Our wedding party and family made our day extra special. My best man, Henry, is quite the performer - his 20-minute ensemble certainly left an impression!” - Harvey aisle with their golden retriever. “Indy is such a big part of our lives and Lucy thought that dogs weren’t allowed in the venue,” Harvey tells us. “The look on her face when she spotted him was priceless.” Lucy and Harvey styled their special day with a navy, white and peach theme. “The venue looked so beautiful that it didn’t need too much decorating,” Lucy tells us. “There was a canopy decorated with fairylights suspended above the dining tables in the great barn and also a backdrop lit with fairylights behind where the wedding band performed. We also had the manor house, which we stayed in on the night of the wedding with some of our wedding party, lit up in blue to fit in with the colour theme of our wedding.” The couple chose a long top table positioned in the middle of the barn where they sat with their parents and siblings. “We had ten round tables surrounding this seating 100 guests in total,” Lucy explains. Each table was named after places special to us that we had visited together, lived in or are planning to go together.” Lucy and Harvey chose floral arrangements provided by Sonning Flowers for their centrepieces mixing simple white varieties with green foliage. “Our other flowers were peach, orange, white and navy blooms that complemented the outfits of our wedding party,” Lucy says. “We chose a simple cake with a custom-made golden retriever bride and groom topper!” The catering was provided by the talented team at Lillibrooke Manor. “For starters, our guests chose butternut squash soup or a duo of duck,” Lucy explains. “The main course consisted of beef bourguignon or spinach, ricotta and basil pie and dessert was a tasty raspberry tart or vegan chocolate cake.”
LOOKING THE PART Lucy’s wedding dress was called Hopkins by Pronovias. “It was the opposite of what I thought I would wear because it was so sparkly,” she tells us. “I accessorised it with a pair of silver earrings and my wedding ring. My bridesmaid looked stunning in her navy dress and Harvey wore a blue Holland and Sherry tweed suit that was a slightly different shade of blue to the groomsmen’s suits that he teamed with a brown waistcoat, rather than a blue one (like the groomsmen). He also wore a peach tie with a white floral buttonhole.” Harvey’s mum makes jewellery so she created his wedding ring and he also wore a gold pocket watch with the couple’s wedding date engraved on it. “Harvey also gifted Henry, his brother who was his best man, a pocket watch,” Lucy tells us.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Lucy and Harvey booked a harpist to play during their ceremony and reception which provided a wonderful acoustic backdrop. “Later in the evening, we had an indie folk band called Foxland perform for our first dance song which was Dancing in the Moonlight,” Lucy says. “Everyone was on the dancefloor and thought the band was fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed partying with everyone and loved the speeches given by our family members and friends. We did a joint speech at the start of the wedding breakfast, telling our own story in our own words which was fun.” The couple also set up games in the engine room at the barn to entertain their guests during the evening reception they both love games so this was essential! 36

Joanna and Daniel (Dan) Hanton married on the 17th of September 2021 at White Pond Farm in Henley.
J
oanna and Dan met at school. “I went to his sixth form and we were best friends and started dating after we finished school,” Joanna tells us. “We went travelling around South America before moving to London from Reading. To propose, Dan took me to Hampstead Heath one Sunday and asked me to marry him. We enjoyed a pub dinner afterwards and as a surprise, he had pre-arranged for my friends and family to be there!”
Having attended a fair few weddings in the past, the couple were eager to host their entire wedding at one place, making the day as seamless as possible. “We had a marquee set up in the tree-lined valley within the grounds of White Pond Farm for our reception so it was the perfect choice of venue,” Joanna says. Here, Joanna tells us all about their laid-back, outdoor wedding filled with flowers. 41

We hired the chairs and the central round bar which was a must-have! We had birch trees tied to the poles in the centre of the marquee that looked incredible and we hired tables, cabinets and bookshelves to give the wedding a rustic and charming feel, and to match the earthy tones of the flowers.

Every speech was per fect, with plenty of tears, laughter and prosecco being poured! They were mixed and not conventional. rances and Tom met when they both worked for Jack Wills in Marlow. “A few years later, I liked Tom’s new profile picture on Facebook and we reconnected instantly and it was the start of our love story!” Frances tells us. “We went on our first date later that week and for our second date, Tom took me for drinks at Aqua in The Shard - he was trying to impress me! We didn’t stop talking and laughing all night - I knew he was someone very special.” In March 2022, Tom asked Frances to marry him. “We were in New York City enjoying an incredible holiday, when Tom got down on one knee to propose, overlooking Brooklyn Bridge,” Frances tells us. “We had just been talking about our favourite memories made together so far and stopped to watch the incredible sunset when Tom proposed. We celebrated with a bottle of champagne, which he had hidden in his bag, and as we toasted our engagement, we got a cheer from those who had seen it happen! Behind us, a passer-by had caught our special moment on his camera so he sent us the photos and we used them for our save-the-dates. Tom had booked for us to go to The River Café next to Brooklyn Bridge (somewhere I had spotted when we visited four years earlier) for a special meal to celebrate.”
SETTING THE SCENE Frances and Tom always knew that they wanted to get married in Marlow because it was where they first met. “We are also the fourth generation from my family to get married in All Saints Marlow which was something very sentimental to us,” Frances explains. “When we were looking for a reception venue, we both fell in love with Danesfield House. The décor is romantic, with elegant mirrors and sparkling chandeliers. This was also where we had celebrated our first Valentine’s Day together, and it provides a special place that we can visit for future celebrations and anniversaries to come.” From the moment Frances and Tom saw each other down the

end of the aisle, it was emotional and they couldn’t stop chatting to each other! “It felt incredible making our promises and vows during the service and marrying my best friend,” Frances says. “The magical feeling of walking out of the church as husband and wife with the bells ringing was something I’ll never forget! We then travelled to Danesfield House in a white Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud for our wedding reception.” The couple chose timeless pieces to style their day with, from beautiful gold-mirrored bookmarks, personalised with their guests’ names on, which doubled up as place names, to a table plan designed by Tom. “He is very creative and it was special how involved he was in creating our big day,” Frances tells us. “When our guests peeled their names off the table plan, it revealed their table number, and once all were removed it displayed our engagement photo in New York City.” For their table numbers, Frances and Tom designed and printed Polaroid-style photos of them over the years to place alongside the gold-foiled table numbers presented in gold frames.” For their invitations, Tom used Canva to design a beautiful watercolour gatefold invite of the clocktower at Danesfield House. The finishing touches included gold wax seals with their initials, and stunning gold calligraphy was added for the guest’s names. Frances carried an elegant bridal bouquet of pink and white roses, white lisianthus, gypsophila and eucalyptus, and the bridesmaids held a similar, smaller design. “We chose a mix of tall and shorter floral centrepieces for the guest tables, with the addition of floating candles on the top table,” Frances tells us. “Extra touches included adding a Grecian-style drape for the chairs complete with rose décor, and a light-up bar for the evening reception for a bit of added sparkle!” The happy couple had a four-tier round buttercream sponge cake and each layer was a different flavour. “There was lemon and elderflower, chocolate, toffee and salted caramel plus a vanilla sponge tier with raspberry jam,” Frances says. “It was decorated with pink roses to match those in my bouquet and our colour scheme. Tom says the cake tasting was one of his favourite wedding planning activities!”

LOOKING THE PART “My dress was by Willowby by Watters from Ellie Sanderson in Beaconsfield and I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it,” Frances tells us. “When I tried it on, I knew it was the style for me! I loved the tulle which had a romantic feel and reminded me of my school days doing ballet. It also had beautiful detailing, including embroidered flowers. I teamed it with a long veil with pearl and petal embellishments, and changed into a pearl hairband for the evening.” Tom adds, “When Frances walked down the aisle, I couldn’t hold back my tears, she looked completely breathtaking. Before the wedding, I didn’t know any details about her dress which was very hard for her to keep a secret! Looking back, I’m glad that I didn’t know anything because I loved that she saw how moved I was when seeing her for the first time, it was magical.” Tom chose a traditional morning suit with a navy jacket to modernise the look. “To stand out, I wore a double-breasted waistcoat and a white rose buttonhole with gypsophila,” he says. “The groomsmen, including our fathers wore morning suits with navy jackets and single-breasted waistcoats and they had pink rose buttonholes to match the bridesmaids’ bouquets.” Frances adds, “The bridesmaids wore blue satin dresses in a style that they felt best in – they looked beautiful and got plenty of compliments from our guests!”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We both love music so this was a big part of our day, taking time to curate what would be played throughout it, from our chosen hymns to the background music played during the wedding breakfast,” Frances 49
Top tip: “We are so glad that we prioritised a few small moments alone together throughout the day to cherish this incredible just-married feeling. This included taking a moment to practice our first dance on the dancefloor, as well as a small walk around the grounds during the evening reception. We also both chose new perfume and aftershave, especially for our wedding day, now we can wear it for special occasions and it reminds us of it.” - Frances and Tom says. “At the church, the soloist Lara Harvey led the hymns and sang When We Fall in Love and Pie Jesu beautifully. At our drinks reception, we had a fabulous string quartet, Halo Strings, who performed a mixture of classical and Bridgerton-style music – they were a huge hit! For the evening reception, we hired an incredible band by Boujee Music – we loved that they performed September by Earth, Wind and Fire, for our wedding month, and the dancefloor was always full!” Frances and Tom had always dreamt of having fireworks. “This was the last addition we made to our wedding and it was a really exciting moment in the evening for everyone,” they said. “We also had a choreographed first dance which was special and a good way of spending some time learning to dance together in the month before the wedding. We treated it as our date night, amidst all the planning, and had so much fun together.”

Caroline says: Don’t forget to make as much of the grounds at your chosen venue as possible for your portrait couple shots.

The confetti shot is achieved by always making the best facial expressions and having fun! Tonja says: I love a themed wedding and here, both the bridal party and guests were styled with a 1920s-inspired Peaky Blinders theme. Hook Norton Brewery provided the excellent setting!
A mix of black and white and colour photography can be such a perfect match.
I welcome pooches at a wedding, as they are integral parts of our lives and I love photographing them. My top tip is to have fun when taking your wedding photographs. Nature can provide us with the most fantastic settings and I love winter weddings.

W
hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.
ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.
A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.
you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.
A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.
HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and
introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.
