This issue’s cover has been sponsored by Hotel du Vin, Brighton (www.hotelduvin.com/locations/brighton), an elegant sanctuary nestled in the heart of Brighton’s enchanting former fishing village, The Lanes. The boutique hotel is housed in a breathtakingly restored 19th-century edifice, and offers an experience steeped in unique character. WOLFIN’ AROUND
Wolves at your wedding is a big secret to keep! But that’s what happened when the Watermill Wolves took part in Don’t Tell The Bride recently. The groom was desperate to have Bond, the local business’ top wolfie star, as ring bearer. But how to pull it off? The team came up with a cunning plan. Head trainer Natalie Lagstrom tells us more: “We met the groom for a sneaky swap; the rings for a silver whistle. When the ceremony began the groom cheekily handed his bride the whistle, much to her surprise. She nevertheless took it from him and sounded the call. Bond immediately answered, running towards her with the rings attached to a neck ribbon, hurtling up the aisle to gasps from assembled guests. As practised, he jumped up, matching the groom’s full height and allowing the ribbon to be undone as the bride laughed, delighted by her wild surprise. Bond, with his huge toothy grin, then left to the crowd’s cheers.” Find out how to have one of Watermill Wolves’ stunning animals be a part of your big day at www.watermillwolves.co.uk 9
AFFAIRS OF THE ART Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens and the Surrey Sculpture Society have launched a new collaboration for 2024, showcasing local artists. The Society has designed and curated a new Art Walk featuring over 100 sculptures. The exhibition will run year-round in the Grade I Listed gardens, with admission included in the entrance price to Leonardslee. The design of the Art Walk and the artful location of each sculpture take advantage of the setting with its diverse range of trees and shrubs, often rare and threatened in the wild. The trail winds down to the estate’s seven lakes and conveniently ends with a return shuttle service. Visitors are treated to an extensive exhibition of affordable sculptures, starting from just £175, in a range of styles and sizes, suitable for almost any garden or home. Something to add to your wedding list or treat each other to perhaps? The works are by both established and emerging artists and are made in a wide range of materials including bronze, resin, glass, metal, wood, stone, ceramic and found objects. As well as an outdoor trail, there is a new indoor sculpture exhibition situated within Leonardslee House. Find out more at www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk

Here, you’re invited to switch off from the everyday and engage your senses, as you recharge and reconnect in the Sussex countryside with forest-bathing expert Helena Skoog. It sounds to us like the perfect remedy to wedding-planning stress! Led by Helena, who has lived off-grid for five years among ancient forestry, you’ll embark on a simple nature walk, where you’ll experience the forest's languages of renewal, growth and change. You’ll also take part in a wellbeing session of Qigong and breath work, to balance parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, calming the mind and reducing the stress of everyday life. Tie the knot in a local hotspot
The Cedar Roof Barn is a rustic wedding venue tucked away among rolling fields just outside the picturesque town of Lewes near Uckfield, East Sussex. Built with love in 2018, this beautiful barn facility sits on acres of green land in the heart of the countryside. Chickens, sheep and horses graze on the flourishing pastures, creating an authentic farmland atmosphere. If you’ve always wanted to celebrate your big day in the country, you’ll adore this charming venue. Here, you can mark your milestone occasion with up to 120 loved ones. The custom-built oak and cedar barn is available for exclusive use, allowing you and your guests to relax in peace. With large windows and timber beams, this indoor space is made for both dining and dancing. While outdoors you’ll find plenty of lovely spots to take photos, chat with
your nearest and dearest, and inhale the clean country air. You can also make the most of the space by playing outdoor games such as table tennis and giant Jenga. If you want to go all out, you can even use hay bales as an alternative to traditional seating. The venue doesn’t currently hold a civil ceremony licence, but blessings can take plan on the lawn outside the barn, or inside it if the weather isn’t favourable. Various services are available at The Cedar Roof Barn, including sound and lighting equipment, tables and chairs, delivery and set up, and much more. As a DIY venue, you’re free to choose your caterers and suppliers for the day without corkage fees or any other tie-ins. Should you need help finding suppliers, the staff here will be happy to share a list of approved businesses from the local area. Overnight accommodation can be found nearby and parking facilities are also available if you want to stay over.

HENDALL MANOR BARNS 01825 732 561 | www.hendall.co.uk Hendall Manor Barns is discreetly positioned in the heart of the East Sussex countryside with far-reaching views of the Sussex Downs. Within the grounds there’s a picturesque pond complete with its own walkway, an orchard, fields, private lawns, and gardens. The main house has a striking arched loggia and a stone gazebo within the garden; an idyllic backdrop for photos. The venue consists of three interconnecting buildings surrounding a large central courtyard with a lawn and raised terrace. These historical and beautiful structures sit below Hendall Manor and its adjacent 17thcentury sandstone barns where you’ll find accommodation for up to eight guests along with a newly converted wedding suite. Ceremonies for up to 150 guests are held in the Stone Barn. An
impressive building, it’s almost 100ft in length and is arranged on two distinct levels. The upper half provides a large reception area in addition to the entrance and access to the raised south-facing terrace and lawn. The lower level has in-filled mullion windows and doorways set into its lovely rough sandstone walls, a tall, vaulted roof and oak flooring. All weddings have exclusive use of the buildings, terrace, and lawn for the duration of the day. The venue offers complete privacy and the opportunity to create your own special day, and you’re encouraged to make imaginative use of the spaces available. There have been an extraordinary variety of reception layouts, flowers, and themes here. So, whether you’re looking for a relaxed yet sophisticated barbecue, vintage-style tea party or formal seated wedding breakfast, the spaces can be easily adapted and decorated to bring your vision to life.
HORSTED PLACE 01825 750 581 | www.horstedplace.co.uk/weddings Horsted Place Hotel is located two miles south of Uckfield and is as well a connected destination as you could wish for when loved ones are travelling from all over to be with you. Steeped in history, with a stunning Victorian Gothic backdrop, it offers an idyllic setting throughout the seasons. Step beyond the redbrick facade and you enter a world of giltframed paintings and roaring fires. Converted into a hotel in the 1980s it still bears the hallmarks of its auspicious past, yet has one foot firmly in the future. It’s available for the exclusive use of your wedding party, which means you get your own fully-staffed country house and garden for the day, including the bedrooms. Built in 1850 for Francis Barchard, Horsted Place is one of the finest examples of Gothic revivalist architecture you’ll find in Britain today, 20
thanks to its architect Samuel Daukes, a keen follower of the movement. In structure it remains little changed to this day. Indeed, if Mr Barchard were able to see it now, he’d surely be able to instantly recognise his beautiful home. Take your pick from three areas licensed for ceremonies: the intimate Library, the larger, newly refurbished Garden Room with French doors leading out onto the formal gardens and the Victorian-style summerhouse, in front of which the “I dos” can take place outside on the lawn. The team love to offer you flexibility to create the wedding of your dreams and appreciate that a large celebration isn’t for everyone. Therefore, they’re careful to cater for guest numbers from 80 to 120. For a private, more intimate wedding, the gorgeous, wood-panelled library is the perfect place. Or on a glorious summer’s day, why not consider the croquet lawn for al fresco celebrations?

REAL WEDDING
L
ydia and Damien met at university and quickly became great friends, bonding over laughter, silliness and a shared love of festivals and animals. It wasn’t until six years later though that their loyal friendship turned into something more and they began dating. Damien proposed in Zakopane, Poland, the couple’s favourite place. He spent hours looking at maps to find the exact magical woodland path that had stunned Lydia so much the first time they’d visited in order to pop the question there. The pair started looking for wedding venues and both fell in love with the views of the South Downs and abundant green space that Slindon House offered. “We were blown away by the Great Hall with its high ceilings, beautiful décor and the amount of natural light,” Lydia explains. “We were also delighted to meet the resident donkeys and alpacas!” So, the date was set for 29th July, 2023. Read on to discover more about it from the bride herself...
SETTING THE SCENE Lydia and Damien were both keen to have as little waste or single-use elements as possible on the day, which fed into most of their planning decisions, including décor and flowers. Also keen to let the beauty of the Great Hall shine through, they dressed it simply with greens, cream and gold. The fireplace’s mantelpiece was dressed with eucalyptus joined by the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets after the ceremony. The couple hired a moongate too, adorned in foliage and faux florals. This offered a grand focal point for the ceremony as well as for the rest of the day. As a further accent, they hired a super-cool neon sign reading: “Together is a beautiful place to be.” “This really summarised the feeling of the whole day,” Lydia says. The duo opted for banqueting tables for their wedding breakfast layout as they wanted it to feel like a party with their loved ones nearby. These were dressed elegantly with green and cream napkins, gold cutlery and green glassware. Lydia’s best friend’s mother, Diana, made 20 beautiful wreath centrepieces with foliage from her garden, along with roses, chrysanthemums and lisianthus with a pillar candle in the centre. She also created the posies that were tied to the ceremony aisle ends, in keeping with the couple’s palette. “These looked gorgeous on the chairs during the reception too,” Lydia remembers. The bride made the place names herself in the months leading up to the big day using a eucalyptus design card and gold ink to stamp guests’ names onto it. The table plan and welcome sign were designed to reflect the greenery and roses in the centrepieces. In the interests of avoiding single-use elements, the couple sourced silk bouquets from a talented local florist for the bride and bridesmaids. “It’s so special to have my bouquet in our living room in all its glory still and the bridesmaids loved keeping theirs too,” Lydia tells us. They chose buttonholes for the groomsmen and fathers to match the bouquets, which also made special keepsakes for the gentlemen.
“Focus on each other and why you’re doing this at all times.” Scan to view video
FOOD FOR THOUGHT Lydia and Damien are big foodies and get immense joy from cooking and eating together. So, they knew that food would be an important element of their day. The bride shares: “We really enjoyed meeting with Susan from Quinn’s Events to decide on our menu, and loved the stylish presentation of the canapés for the drinks reception. Susan’s passion for food and using 31

locally-sourced produce really excited us and the menu on the day was divine!” The wedding breakfast began with Burrata and Nutbourne tomatoes, followed by the main course where a cannon of lamb took centre stage (the vegetarian alternative was Romesco aubergine). The meal was finished with a sharing platter of desserts served in the Blue Room overlooking the Downs. “We’re obsessed with ice cream and plan most our holidays around where the next helping is coming from!” Lydia says. “So, we chose to have ice cream served at our evening reception. Delicious Dreams decorated their tricycle beautifully to match our colour palette, and we had great fun choosing the flavours.”
REAL WEDDING
LOOKING THE PART The bride wore Elcira by Pronovias in champagne. It was completely different in style to what she’d imagined but tried it after choosing Slindon House and imagined the trailing skirt on the Downs – she knew it was the one. Damien looked dapper in a custom-made suit from Beggar’s Run in bottle green and accessorised with a blush pink tie to complement the pink in the bouquets. His groomsmen wore stone-coloured suits with bottle green ties and pocket squares to match Damien’s. Lydia’s bridesmaids wore beautiful silky green dresses – Brooklyn. Some were in forest green with the others in sage. The adorable flower girls meanwhile wore white dresses embellished with a white silky bow.
“The time alone together that we’d intentionally carved out during the day formed some of our most precious memories.” CELEBRATE IN STYLE South Downs Strings played for guests before the ceremony, during it and also for the drinks reception, and Lydia received plenty of compliments on how beautiful the music was. “Their rendition of Hoppipola by Sigur Ros for the entrance of the bridal party was so magical,” Lydia remembers. After the main course the Secret Singers surprised guests with a fantastic set list, which got everyone up dancing and singing along. “This was one of our favourite parts of the day,” says Lydia.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We both felt over the moon to be married and surrounded by our loved ones; the joy and support in the room was palpable. It really was the best day of our lives,” Lydia shares. “The ceremony was so special. The readings from my mum and our best friend Emily were wonderful, and it was special to share our personal vows with one another in the presence of our loved ones. “We both found that walking into the wedding breakfast was a highlight. Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac was playing and our loved ones were jumping, dancing and waving their napkins in the air. It felt so joyful and magical. Our best friends Reece and Ethan were our masters of ceremony and did a fantastic job introducing us. “Catherine and Andy from White Stag Photography, and Amber our videographer were the loveliest people, we couldn’t have chosen better to document our day. It really felt like we were spending time with good friends and that put us at ease throughout. Catherine in particular was a lovely presence for me in the morning, soothing last-minute nerves and sharing stories.” 33

Rustic
ROMANCE Katie and Kieron opted for a rustic-themed wedding day with a gorgeous dark green palette Images courtesy of Anita K Photography
37
S
oon after they met online Katie and Kieron set up their first date. When they met at a local pub there was an instant attraction, neither could stop smiling and both knew this felt different. Kieron proposed on a steam train travelling through Snowdonia. The two had just taken a selfie when Kieron got down on one knee. He’d been pretty quiet all morning, so Katie had force fed him a Freddo thinking he was hungry, but it turned out he was just nervous. He’d had the the ring made bespoke in The Lanes to the exact design Katie had showed him in hopes he’d ask one day. When the couple viewed The Sussex Barn Hellingly they fell in love with its relaxed nature. They’d pictured a rustic barn feel for their day and the venue was exactly what they had in mind. “It felt intimate but big enough for our 120 guests including the evening reception,” Katie explains. “It’s also close to where we live, which was ideal.” So, the date was set for 16th September, 2023. Read on as we find out more...
Kieron wore a navy suit with black trim, white shirt and bow tie. The groomsmen had dark green bow ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses and their buttonholes were a little different to Kieron’s.
I found my perfect dress at Fross Wedding Collections in Uckfield. It was an ex-sample so it needed altering, but I loved the dainty straps and floral appliqués. It was A-line but still fairly fitted. I bought some dried grass hair clips that matched Kieron’s buttonhole, and had Hollywood waves in my hair. I loved what my hair stylist did, so I didn’t want to hide it with a veil.
My bridesmaids were dressed in dark green wrap gowns and each wore it off the shoulder giving them a beautiful Grecian vibe.
My dad and I travelled to the venue in a beautiful old Beauford. It was then that suddenly everything felt real. 38
REAL WEDDINGS
After the ceremony we both went into the barn alone and had a glass of champagne to toast the fact that we’d just got married. It was amazing to see how the barn had come to life and to steal a quiet moment together.
My favourite drink is Diet Coke and Kieron loves spiced rum so we got miniature ones as wedding favours and tied labels to them saying ‘Katie’s choice,’ and ‘Kieron’s choice.’
I made the table plan using a hoop with mini pegs attached along with everyone’s names for each table. We also got some Polaroid prints to go alongside our table numbers.
I used old Hendricks gin bottles as centrepieces and filled them with bunny tails and eucalyptus with a faux flower wreath surrounding them. We had a two-course wedding breakfast plus canapés after the ceremony. We opted for prawn, smoked salmon and avocado for starter; and pulled beef, mini roast potatoes and veg for main (with veggie pie vegetarian option). During the evening reception,we had pulled pork baps with apple sauce and all the trimmings.
I made the bridesmaids’ bouquets myself but our florist made mine using fresh flowers. I wanted timeless white roses and green foliage. 39
We enjoyed our cake for dessert – lemon, chocolate and sated caramel. It was decorated in a neutrally-coloured icing and I’d bought a dried grass topper for it from Etsy featuring our married surname.
We created a crisp wall as we both love them. It was made from a wooden pallet and we bought a neon sign to add to it. It said ‘love’ and we added ‘at first bite’ with our favourite crisps. We also had a basket of flip flops for the dancefloor and another full of throws for anyone who got chilly in the evening.
We had a sparkler archway reception leading into the first dance, which was a wonderful moment to have and allowed our photographer to capture some lovely photos.
We bought an old guitar and asked everyone to sign it, which we now have up in our home. We’re both musical and thought this was a fun idea.
Kieron and two of his groomsmen are in a band, so they played for the first half-anhour of our evening reception, which everyone loved. We then had a playlist we’d put together including everything from Motown to musicals, and Ibiza dance music.
All of our suppliers were amazing but both our videographer and photographer took us away during the wedding breakfast to get some sunset photos and it was lovely to take some time away again. Plus, we woke up in the morning with a teaser trailer of our video to share.

ROMANCE Gemma and Matthew planned a day that was truly them featuring their beloved converted camper Images courtesy of Elizabeth Ruby Photography
“
G
em and Matt met at university and soon discovered a lot in common both in terms of interests and values. They became friends, and even now, after their relationship blossomed into something much more, Matt still says that Gem is his best mate. During lockdown the couple converted an old school mini bus into a campervan and planned a four-week trip around the UK for when it was completed in the summer of ‘21, taking them from Durdle Door to the NC 500 in Scotland. When they arrived at the campsite at their first stop and finished setting up, they headed down to the beach at Durdle Door for a sunset walk. It was at this romantic spot right on the shoreline, that Matt proposed. “I was completely shocked and so happy,” Gem tells us. “We’d literally worked full time and spent all of our spare time working on the van, so I have no idea when Matt had a moment to plan it all. He smashed it!” The couple were in love with Southend Barns from the moment they laid eyes on the venue during their first visit. “We wanted somewhere with relaxed, festival, outdoor vibes but still had a touch of class and elegance – Southend Barns has all of this and more,” Gem explains. “The team were so flexible and allowed us to make the venue our own. They were attentive, helpful, kind and understanding, and always fun to talk to. They took our ideas to the next level and displayed a real love and energy for what they do.” So, the pair wasted no time in setting the date for 5th August 2023. Read on as the bride gives us the lowdown...

REAL WEDDINGS
I had a beautiful wildflower bouquet in soft mixed pastels. The bridesmaids had smaller versions. We also wore small bunches of gypsophila in our hair. My dress reveal to my bridesmaids and dad was a standout moment for me. My dress, Marci, was bespoke from Lyn Ashworth. Sarah from the boutique was amazing from start to finish and made the most beautiful dress. I always wanted something with sleeves so when I saw Marci I knew I’d found something special – I felt relaxed and beautiful.
Our ceremony was emotional with wobbly lips, tears in our eyes and plenty of pauses for deep breaths! Having personal vows, which we kept a secret until the day is something I’d recommend. It makes the ceremony so much more genuine. We loved it and our guests loved witnessing them.
The ceremony space was decorated with a white moon gate, which had wild flowers and foliage woven around it. The aisle was lined with eight meadow arrangements where close fami ly and the wedding party sat.
The groomsmen wore a grey Marc Darcy suit jackets, with matching waistcoat, trousers, belt and shoes. The style inspiration was a summer’s day at the races as we’re big fans of attending Goodwood racecourse.
Matt wore a three-piece suit in colours and fabrics that he wouldn’t normally wear on a day-to-day basis. His tan Marc Darcy jacket from Astares was paired with a stone Donegal waistcoat from Moss and black skinny-fit trousers from Boohoo Man . He also wore a skinny black paisley patterned tie as opposed to the groomsmen’s plain black versions as a point of difference allowing him to stand out.

The bridesmaids looked incredible in their mixed pink dresses. They chose these from a wide selection picked out by me. They tried them on, gave their feedback and were then allocated one of their top two. This process was really fun and allowed for everyone to try different styles to find something that suited them as an individual.
gin Our favours were rhubarb and ginger g alon , shots with lemonade, my favourite said with Swizzels’ Love Hear t sweets that ‘just marr ied.’
Our table plan was presented on a rustic ladder with each table detailed on simple white labels on dark-glass wine bottles filled with wild flowers. It was beautiful and got so many compliments.
Our centrepieces featured bud vases, whic h my mum collected from various char ity shops. These were filled with wild flowers, and accompanied by candles in two shades of pink to complement the bridesmaids dresses. 44
We had a three-tier cake (Victoria spon ge, lemon drizzle and carrot cake), with white butte rcream, decorated with fresh, edible wild flowe rs. It was stunning! There was also a beautiful wood en frame holding 10 flower threads, which was placed behind it.
Also as part of our centrepieces we had lyrics from our favourite songs printed on A5 white textured card and placed on small white wooden easels. We had our summer barbecue menu and place names displayed on the same type of card too. The latter featured a sprig of lavender supplied by our florist, held in place by a small wooden peg.
REAL WEDDINGS
h was decorated with disco balls, We had a gorgeous wooden wagon, whic added polaroid pictures of us, foliage and polaroid cameras. We then wedding date on them, a guest white sunglasses with our last name and ouple message in a bottle. the-c book, and a favourite-memory-from-
We had canapés as our starter to keep guests going as they mingled and enjoyed the venue during the drinks reception; followed by a summer barbecue for our main wedding breakfast. This included sausages, katsu chicken, and rump of lamb, plus vegetarian options of katsu halloumi, onion bhaji burger and not-so pulled pork ragu. We finished with a deconstructed berry Pavlova for our pudding.
Steel drum player Marlon performed current music at the drinks reception. He suited the vibe of our festival-style wedding perfectly. In the evening we had the most incredible four-piece band, Duchess. Their vibe was Ibiza dance music, which reflected our taste to a tee! They had three powerhouse female singers and a sax player. To say our guests loved them would be an understatement!
Our van was parked at the entrance to the venue with our welcome sign. It’s such a big part of our lives and our engagement story, it needed to be front and centre. We then drove off in it the morning after the wedding.
Matt’s speech had the room in tears, it was so heartfelt, honest, personal and genuine – everywhere I looked I saw tears!
Whatever planning style suits you, do that! I had a folder that I used to put all of our paperwork in such as emai l conversations, booking forms, deposit payments, vision boards and more . Something I wish I had done was to create a separate email account for anything wedding related, it would have helped massively. I’d also recommend allocating one day a week where you sit down and dedicate time to wedmin.

HISTORY
We love the elegant, muted colour palette of this local shoot, paired with its soft natural light aesthetic Images courtesy of Scarlett Cook Photos
O
ozing history thanks to its impressive Gothic architecture, The Guildhall in Chichester was chosen for this stunning styled shoot as the perfect contrast to the project’s romantic, elegant vibe. With only around 15 weddings held there each year, the venue has an exclusive air and can be tailored to each couple’s requirements making their big day the personal celebration of their dreams. In keeping with this notion the gowns, veils, floral decorations and floral hair accessories were created especially for the day.

ONCE AND F
FLOWERS
Meet the county’s incredible wedding florists
lowers and weddings have gone hand in hand since the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians carried posies of fragrant herbs and wore floral garlands at their nuptials to ward off bad luck as well as to symbolise new beginnings, fidelity and fertility. Today, it’s difficult to imagine a wedding without them. Since those early days, they’ve become a staple of venue styling, bringing themes and palettes together and creating an atmosphere of joy and romance. So, if your own big-day blooms have now reached the top of your to-do list, read on as we introduce you to some of the county’s finest floral designers.
MEET BELINDA CAMPOPIANO, CHEZ FLEUR @chezfleur
I set up Chez Fleur over 12 years ago, and since then I’ve provided wedding flowers for hundreds of happy couples! Every wedding is unique and the designs for the flowers are always bespoke, which is what I love about wedding floristry. The bridal bouquet in particular is such an important part of the day and I love all stages of the process from the planning meeting when we discuss the design through to the big day when I deliver the bouquet and enjoy a wonderfully special moment when the bride sees it for the first time! What’s your top tip for couples when it comes to planning wedding flowers? Have a good look at bouquets and flowers online but be open to allowing your florist to create something special and bespoke for you. It’s helpful to have a budget to work with as it’s easy to get carried away with all the fabulous flowers and venue designs. Having said that, your florals will be in a great many of the photos so it’s worth investing in a florist who’s experienced and really knows what they’re doing.

What’s your favourite flower and why? I’d struggle to make a bouquet without roses. To me they’re the quintessential wedding flower and come in such a huge variety of colours, sizes and textures, they’re just perfect for every wedding! And of course, peonies are gorgeous but their season is very short (May to June), which is a relief as they can be notoriously difficult to work with!
MEET ANDREA BEACH, THE ART BUNCH www.theartbunch.co.uk |
@theartbunch
I’ve been a full time florist for three years now after a career in theatrical costume. I have a small florist shop in Ticehurst and do wedding flowers across East Sussex. I’ve always been very artistic and creative, which is something that really comes through in my floristry. I love nature and being outdoors and all my designs are inspired by the seasons celebrating the best nature has to offer. What are your 2024 wedding flower trend predictions? I think 2024 will be full of colour! Clashing hues and neon designs with
disco balls seem very popular, as well as more dramatic palettes – bolder ideas really make an impact. What’s your favourite flower and why? Mine really varies depending on the season... as we’re heading into spring I’d have to say ranunculus. They’re available in so many stunning colours and can be used as focal flowers but also really complement other blooms within a design. They can be tricky to work with but when they behave they look incredible and open out beautifully. They’re great for adding depth and a vibrant pop of colour. 51
MEET PENNY EVISON, HELLEBORE & ROSE www.helleboreandrose.co.uk |
@helleboreandrose
As the floral designer behind Hellebore & Rose it’s really important to me that your wedding flowers are all you imagine them to be and more. This is your chance to dream, and we’ll carefully tailor our designs to meet your vision. We create romantic, bespoke floral arrangements that are inspired by the beauty of nature.

What’s your top tip for couples when it comes to planning wedding flowers? Let your venue influence your florals. Whether a barn venue, a stately home or on top of a mountain, be influenced by what’s around you. Being aware of trends is great, but your flowers may also capture what you’re saying through your choice of venue. If you trust your florist they’ll guide you, helping you to remain conscious of your budget and above all, educate you on the art of what’s possible.
MEET CLARE DAVIES, PETAL & BIRD www.petalandbird.co.uk |
@petalandbird
I’m the paper florist behind Petal & Bird and everything I create is bespoke made from paper so that your wedding flowers are longlasting for you to treasure well after your special day. I create everything from my Chichester-based home studio and when I’m not making flowers I’m mum to my three-year-old daughter. What’s your top tip for couples when it comes to planning wedding flowers? Think about what flowers hold a special meaning to you or loved ones as these can be featured within your wedding florals in your favourite colours and any size, with no need to worry about whether they’re in season. What’s your favourite flower and why? My favourites to look at are dahlias as there’re so many beautiful varieties and colours that have such amazing petal structure. My favourite flowers to create though are multi-stemmed blooms like stocks, sweet peas and freesias as I just love seeing all the elements come together to make the flower come to life. 52

www.katierogersphotography.com
What’s your favourite flower and why? I love so many! However, I couldn’t be Hellebore and Rose without hellebores being my absolute favourite! Plus, the winter rose provides floral beauty against a frosty landscape, leading the way for spring bulbs to come forth. The winter rose and the summer rose – simply perfect and perfectly matched.
MEET LEANNE BUTCHER, THE VILLAGE FLORIST https://the-village-florist.co.uk |
@the.village.florist
We’re a family-run business with a combined floristry experience of more than 60 years. Our shop is situated in North Road, Lancing. We’re specialists in wedding flowers from bouquets, reception and church decoration, to buttonholes and corsages; catering for all budgets from small intimate celebrations to the larger more lavish ceremonies. We like our designs to be a true reflection of the person they’re for, so we’ll use our extensive knowledge of flowers to design that unique finishing floral touch that will enhance and complement your special day. What are your 2024 wedding flower trend predictions? The classic crisp white palette is definitely proving to be a popular choice with our 2024 couples. Some are opting to add a touch of colour with nudes, blushes or baby blue splashes. We love seeing new colour themes coming through though. What’s your favourite flower and why? It has to be a Peony, especially a white one. They’re just a statement piece on their own and show up beautifully in arrangements. The only downside to them is they have a fairly small window of availability in May/June and just into July, but this does, of course, fall during the peak wedding season.
MEET RACHEL GRIMES, THE MIRROR & THE VEIL www.themirrorandtheveil.co.uk |
@themirrorandtheveil
I’ve been fortunate to work with many clients over the past 10 years across the South East. My focus is often on weddings, where clients ask for designs that stun their guests and really elevate their day. I love designing in harmony with the venue, the client’s brief, and using the best of the flowers available to us from the local cutting gardens.
subject to them. This suits my clients who also tend to be fairly adventurous and open to ideas. Clients often want a style of design that integrates their venue, outfits, and overall aesthetic for their day. The trend that never goes out of fashion is the timelessness that comes from creating designs that reflect the couple’s own tastes and choices. What’s your favourite flower and why? The one I always come back to, as both the star attraction and a useful all-rounder, is the rose. Modern, classic, and often scented, the variety of tones now available through today’s growers is incredible and they often provide an unusual colour that can unite or highlight a palette.

onto a suit. Simple long-stemmed bouquets of all one flower have also been requested a lot. Colours are still very personal and we’re getting requests for a wide variety of tones but the apricot, coral, and the Pantone colour of the year for 2024, Peach Fuzz, do seem to be popular already.
What are your 2024 wedding flower trend predictions? I’ve definitely seen an increase in couples asking for pocket boutonnieres where the flowers are attached to a piece of card and inserted into the suit pocket rather than having to pin a buttonhole
What’s your favourite flower and why? A very tricky question! I’d always have to say whatever's in its true season – tulips in spring, peonies in summer, dahlias in autumn and amaryllis in winter. I love all flowers really!

ASK THE EXPERTS
HOT TOPIC
This issue we asked our experts to offer those of you just starting out on your wedding planning journey some advice as you take those first tentative steps SWEET DREAMS
Carrie Raymond from Caritas Cake Design (www.caritascakedesign.co.uk) says: Once you’ve got your venue and a date all booked in, one of the next steps is to book in your wedding cake. When looking at ideas for your big-day bake, your first point of call is to have a look at some of the design options available. Think about what’s most important to you in terms of style and overall vision, decide on an approximate budget, and have a look at some of the cake makers able to deliver to your venue. You may click with a particular supplier during your search, or know you want to work with someone specifically if you’ve followed them for a while. Do ensure they have insurance and a good hygiene rating from the local council before booking in. Each cake designer will have a unique set of skills and styles, and not every one offers every type of cake, so have a look at their previous work, check their reviews and talk to them openly about what you’d like. Most designers will be able to give you starting prices for the size and style cake you’re looking at, and if it isn’t in budget, or not a practical choice for your wedding, they may be able to offer alternative suggestions.
Jackie Levers from Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club (www.cottesmoregolf.co.uk) says: The first thing to do is decide what type of wedding you’d like and what date you prefer. There are so many beautiful times of the year to get married. This will all have a great influence on your palette, choice of flowers and décor to create the look you may already have in mind. Imagine where you see yourself exchanging your vows. This could be in a traditional church with hymns, readings and perhaps that white Rolls Royce you’ve always dreamed of. You’d then book a venue to go on to for your wedding reception. Or do you see yourselves having everything in one place? It can make things a little easier but it is all down to personal taste. Here at Cottesmore, we offer a romantic outdoor ceremony out on our lawn or a stunning indoor barn room for a stylish backdrop to the “I dos.” We then have a stunning reception room for your wedding breakfast and party. We wish you all the best.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
© Leigh Tarrant
Vocalist Vanessa Sergeant (https://vanessasergeantvocals.co.uk) says: Your wedding will be one of the most important days in your life so it needs to be perfect in every way! The music you choose will include songs close to your heart and ones that when listening back in years to come, will remind you of the day you said “I do.” So, have a think about the melodies most meaningful to you both and at what point of the day you want each one to be played to elevate the atmosphere. Having a singer to deliver these just makes the experience that much better and more personal to you.
THE A-TEAM
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED...
Florrie de Havilland from de Havilland Memories (www.dehavillandmemories.com) says: As someone who has recently planned their own big day, I have to say that the most important first step to attaining your dream wedding is finding a venue and getting a date locked in. As soon as you have a date, you can relax a little and find the suppliers you can relate to and would like to work with. I recommend your next supplier to be your stationer as you can’t have a wedding without inviting any guests! Then, you should think about what you’d like and what your priorities are so that you can allocate your budget accordingly. From here, you can decide if you’d like to go down the bespoke route and have a tailored experience, or to use templates for your invitations. Your wedding stationery is the first impression that your guests will have of your big day, so that’s the time to make a statement. I recommend using a personal stationer and creating bespoke invitations if you want to wow your loved ones and have a beautiful memento of your wedding day. Usually, they’ll work with you from your invitations, all the way through to W-day and later, your thank-you letters, meaning you can create something really special and cohesive throughout. 56
Jacquie Keeley from Fab Food For You (https://fabfoodforyou.co.uk) says: Once you’ve chosen a date and place, you’ll have the foundation to start with the all-important details. This will take many people to deliver to perfection within a seamless, flowing process on the day, so you’ll need a timetable and a collective co-operation of your suppliers. But who are they and how do you find them? Enlist the help of local businesses. Weddings are their livelihood, they understand the processes and problems like no one else. They know how to get licences, can arrange safe delivery for such things as flowers and untold other issues. This is their job and they’re passionate about the detail and the timing knowing just how important this very special day is. Using a local business means you’re getting a local expert. A recent piece of research showed that 95 per cent of couples planning a wedding found it stressful and the majority related experiencing real stress-related symptoms. You have to remember that you’re not just planning a wedding, you’re also planning for your life together and blending two families. You don’t need to spend your engagement in a stressful manner. But with a curated team of local professionals in your corner you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the nicer things in the planning process (food tasting, trial days with hair and makeup artists, dress fittings). Enjoy and treasure the good memories of this entire period. There are many suppliers out there to choose from, whether you decide on one firm to handle it all or talk to several providers, it’s your choice and you call the shots. The aim is to find people you can trust and work well with, there’s no right or wrong approach. Find out what works for you.

SKIN DEEP
Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones reveals his skincare tips for grooms-to-be
O
ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones, to discuss male skincare. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their skin in the run-up to the big day? Research potential products and test them on a small part of your skin a few weeks before the wedding. If everything is good, work out a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising, and try to add in a weekly mask to help get your skin in shape for the big day. Keep to a routine that works for you, and drink plenty of water, as it will help massively. On the big day, use a face spray to refresh the skin in case you get a bit hot and nervous. It’s also good at taking away any oiliness or shine. Do you have a skincare routine you would recommend? I always use a face wash, followed by a clarifying toner, serum and moisturiser. My routine is pretty straightforward, and it suits my skin and its needs. I use the Shakeup Face 4Ward Multi-Action Facial Wash, the brilliant Face 4Ward Pro-Youth Serum, and the trusty Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick. I’m also obsessed with the Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. With a new baby and a Strictly schedule, it’s certainly helping me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep when I haven’t. Throughout the day, I use a moisturiser or
face spray to keep my skin soft and hydrated, and then in the evening, I follow the same process. A couple of nights a week, I like to use the You Do the Mask Purifying Clay Mask from Shakeup to help banish any buildup and blemishes. Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? Well, honestly, this is something I struggled with in the past, as you just want to rest and recover. But now I’m finding that the best way to recover is with active recovery, which means I continue in the gym but with strength and mobility because my body needs to be able to move. I’m a big ice and cold-water therapy fan, as I find it helps with my blood flow, and mental state, so I take regular ice baths and daily cold showers. I’ve also decided to reduce sugar in my life, but I’ll still have the occasional cake or dessert but no soft drinks. I now drink a lot of tea, black and herbal, plus matcha and as much water as I can, but I’ve never really indulged in alcohol or coffee. Eating the right foods gives our body the vital fuel it needs, and knowing what ingredients are in them and asking where they came from is just as important. You can still have a hamburger, but it’s about the quality. People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our skin? Great question, and one I am excited and passionate about. I truly feel that if we eat and
shop more locally, it will have a massive positive impact. I know this is not always possible, but I try to search for a local farm or farmer’s shop, butcher or baker. I’m also looking into how I use my garden because we can grow so much of the food that we use to cook. It’s all about using what we have. Nature provides food in its own protective packaging, so don’t buy it if it’s in extra cellophane. Just one step at a time, day by day, small changes can help. What products couldn’t you live without? Without a doubt, it’s the Shakeup Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick – it’s an essential, and I also can’t live without my Murdock Beard Moisturiser. The new Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream is also a must. It’s helping tackle those eye bags and dark circles I have right now! How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? It’s really hard, but it’s all about discipline, preparation and balance. Plan your meals and prepare them because you can’t make decisions when you’re hungry or tired. Get enough good-quality sleep and spend as much time as you can being happy with loved ones. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? A cold shower! It helps you feel less stressed and brings your blood pressure down. Shakeup products are available from www.shakeupcosmetics.com and www.amazon.co.uk 75

Q&A JUST IN TIME
THE MANE EVENT
When should I start thinking about booking my make-up artist, and do you have any tips for finding the perfect fit?
How should I look after my hair to make sure it’s looking healthy enough to wear down on my big day?
Danielle from Makeover Box (www.makeover-box.co.uk) says: I’d recommend booking your bridal MUA of choice around 18 months prior to the big day, or as soon as you’ve booked your date and venue. We get booked up quicker than people might think! The best way to find your dream make-up artist is to go through the social media and websites of potential candidates to find out more about them and if their style aligns with the look you envision for yourself on your big day. For example, if you’re looking for a soft, natural look, but the artist showcases mainly full glam, then they may not be the right fit for you. I’d suggest finding someone who has posted the make-up styles you love. Then, take a look through their reviews and testimonials to see what past brides have said about their experience to ensure they’re the right match for you. 76
Chloe from Chloe Campbell Hair and Makeup (www.chloecampbellmua.com) says: Wearing your hair down on your wedding day is a great option as the look can be so versatile. So, if you want it to look its best there are some simple and affordable steps you can take. A lot of brides are often concerned about length and volume and so avoid going to the hairdresser, however regular trims are vital to make sure your tresses are looking thick and healthy. Trimming dead ends won’t help your hair grow faster but it will help it grow healthier. A proper haircare routine is equally vital to luscious locks. Massaging oils such as rosemary or coconut into your scalp before washing helps to exfoliate the skin and promotes growth as well as reducing hair loss. Regular masks are also a great step towards avoiding split and damaged ends, which will help keep your regular trims on the shorter side. To keep your hair healthy, avoid using too much heat on it, and when you do you should use a heat protector spray as well as a finishing oil to rehydrate your lengths. With these few easy steps you can make sure your hair is looking its best on your big day.

SKINCARE 101 with Adele O ’Donoghue
Holistic therapist and SBC Skincare’s head of education shares her ultimate guide to wedding-prep skincare
A
dele O’Donoghue has gained more than 20 years’ experience working in the skincare industry, which for her all began when she trained as a holistic therapist. During her time practising the valuable techniques she learned, she felt a passion to share her practical, relatable and affordable beauty tips, which is just what she gets to do as a regular guest presenter at QVC and TVSN. Plus, as head of education for SBC Skincare she strives to ensure the brand brings relatable conversations to the forefront, ensuring everyone feels understood
and included. So, who better to turn to for advice on handling wedding stress and the toll that can take on your body, as well as on achieving that flawless complexion in time for the big day? Beauty and wellness editor Kelly Andrews quizzed Adele in search of answers. What do you love about SBC, what makes it different? SBC is a small independent British skincare brand that has an exceptional reputation within the industry. We’ve been supplying skincare solutions to the professionals for over 30 years. The trust and reputation we’ve built over that time makes me extremely proud. Every formula is made in small batches in the UK, which gives us complete ingredient traceability and quality control. SBC Skincare remains an affordable, luxurious brand with exceptional customer loyalty built upon results. What are your top skincare tips for our brides-to-be? Wherever possible, begin to take care of your skin and wellbeing sooner rather than later. Don’t make dramatic last-minute changes a few weeks before your wedding that may cause a reaction. Great results don’t rely on one facial the week before your wedding but on consistent care over a longer period until you’re glowing on your day. Try to cut out overly processed foods too. Eat a diet rich in colourful vegetables and fruits, as well as protein, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Great skincare starts from within so eat your skin beautiful. How can holistic therapy help with wedding planning fatigue and stress? Holistic therapy doesn’t have to be complex or reserved for expensive retreats. Simply having an awareness that our everyday rituals including the small habits and thought patterns could have an impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing can improve our stress levels. Taking the time to understand your own personal stress triggers and circumstances can help you to adjust to a demanding lifestyle. Changes to diet and sleep habits will improve energy levels and by prioritising yourself in these ways, your self-worth, mental clarity, and confidence will improve. 80
Breakouts are a common side effect of stress. How can we prevent and treat these so as not to jeopardise the look of wedding make-up? Try to prevent stress by introducing some self-care practices. Ensure that some of your daily exercise includes mindful stretching and meditation, yoga is always a great choice. If you have time before your wedding, try introducing a retinol into your regime. Considered the gold standard of skin care, retinols accelerate cell turnover to reveal fresher, younger skin cells and decrease congestion. Always apply in the evening followed by a broad-spectrum SPF the following day. Regular facials aren’t always within budget. Can you recommend a daily at-home self-care/skincare regime to perfect the complexion in time for the big day? You can most definitely achieve great results at home, make sure your basic regime is consistent. Always cleanse thoroughly morning and night, apply broad-spectrum SPF during the day and a daily moisturiser regardless of your skin type. Protecting your natural barrier is key to achieving healthy strong skin so look for ceremides, lipids and antioxidants within your skincare formulas. You can upgrade to salon-worthy skin care by introducing a weekly mask. I’d recommend SBC Hydra-Collagen Clay Mask to purify the skin, while combatting fine lines. To quench thirsty skin, apply one of SBC’s Moisturising Gels: Hydra-Collagen, Hyaluronic, or Propolis & White Willow for example. Use a thick layer to tackle specific concerns while hydrating thirsty skin. What are the biggest trends in skincare at the moment and what’s your favourite? I prefer proven results rather than trends, but I’m delighted to see a return to the clean skin aesthetic. I would, however, urge you not to feel under pressure to achieve flawless skin. Remember that your skin is the most incredible vital organ and feeling comfortable within it and learning to love your own is the real success. Enjoying the process of massaging your skin helps to energise and uplift you before your day begins, and think about just how therapeutic a deep cleanse can be at the end of the day. It all helps us to clear our minds and decompress.
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
Can effective skincare have an impact on mood and stress reduction? Feeling comfortable within your skin will affect your mood and stress levels, particularly if you’re suffering with a skin concern such as sensitivity or irritation. Finding a regime that not only suits your skin but brings back radiance and health is essential for your confidence. As we’re in the midst of winter, how can we protect and treat skin for the ravages of the season? Winter brings different challenges to our skin. The most important thing you can do to protect it is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF regardless of the weather. UV rays are around us 365 days a year and UVA rays that are present in light penetrate deeper into the epidermis where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin.Look for skin care containing nourishing and repairing ingredients, such as propolis, rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid to protect and maintain the skin’s natural barrier that may be compromised by harsh winter stresses. Dry and stressed skin can really benefit from the addition of a balm, such as the Propolis & Honey Rescue Balm. Finally, indulge in some winter habits you’ll love! Our Arnica & Sandalwood Muscle Soak creates a warming cocoon to soak cold, tired muscles with a beautifully comforting aromatic.
unsettled, but a well-established sleep regime will really help. SBC’s Night Rituals range is formulated with a luxurious sleep-inducing fragrance and enriched with magnesium and silk proteins. Wedding gowns with plunging necklines and open backs are on trend at the moment. What can brides do to make sure skin shown off looks its best. Exfoliation is the skincare key to that vital glow! SBC’s Glycolic Serum is a lightweight body moisturiser that contains a carefully balanced blend of AHA’s to gently remove the dry, dull skin cells on the surface of the skin to reveal fresh, young, and plump skin cells. It also helps to prep before any hair removal, preventing in growing hairs, and of course, if your thing is using self-tan, it will ensure a radiant finish. What product can’t you live without in your beauty kit? SBC Hydra-Collagen Replenishing Cream Cleanser. Nothing else in your regime will work to optimum levels without an effective, respectful cleanser. I love the texture of the nourishing cream that leaves my skin soft and hydrated. Everything else works far better with a great base. CHECK OUT... https://sbcskincare.co.uk www.instagram.com/adeleodskincare
Dry, oily or combination skin. Complexions don’t always fit into one of these tidy boxes. Is it possible to tailor a regime to suit the specific needs of an individual’s skin? While it’d be great if life were that simple, we know it rarely is. Don’t feel the need to commit to one whole skincare range but choose your serum to tackle and visibly change your main concern such as pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. Look for textures that suit your skin type with specific actives that relate to your skin’s needs and finally, find formulas you can afford to change according to the season and hormonal fluctuations. How can we achieve that sought after bridal glow on the morning of? Try to set a healthy sleeping pattern at least a couple of months before your wedding, it really is one of the most important factors to ensure you’re caring for both your emotional and physical wellbeing. We understand that sleep the night before your wedding may be a little 81

y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...
THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,
which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.
A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW
and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!
on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.
OUT AND ABOUT
TAKE IN THE VIEW
Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant
For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

A song of sun AND SEA
County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination
W
hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.
ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.
A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.
you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.
REST AND RELAXATION
FUN IN THE SUN
One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that
Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.
A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.
HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and
introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

Parisian elegance
Part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, Le Bristol Paris is everything you could dream of from a once in a lifetime visit to La Ville-Lumière, The City of Light. Rachel Westall checks it out...
I
f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON
PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.
WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!
THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.
HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.
