harlotte Bailey and Joe Atkinson met in Egypt of all places and instantly felt a connection, clearly love at first sight! “Joe was there as a ‘friend’ on a ‘family and friends’ trip to Egypt for New Years Eve,” recalls Charlotte. “We got on straight away with similar interests, and found ourselves laughing at the same things, the relationship grew from there.” Joe proposed to Charlotte in romantic fashion while on holiday in New York, on September 18th 2019. “We had done a day of sight-seeing, and had just rode over the Brooklyn Bridge,” shares Charlotte. “We stopped at a viewing point where you could see the entire view of New York City, and Joe surprised me by asking me to marry him. We used the places we had visited on this day as table names at our wedding!” Here, Charlotte tells us more about their day...

ordan and Adam met in old-school fashion on a night out at Faces Nightclub, Essex. “I was a regular there and spotted Adam one night and, after a few vodkas, was the one to approach him!” recalls Jordan. “However, nothing developed from this particular night. Fast-forward a few months and we was both in the same venue once again, this time we exchanged numbers and the rest is history.” Luxury holiday destination Barbados set the scene for Adam’s proposal, “This is a very special place to me and my family, we visited the island every year from when I was 14,” shares Jordan. “We was on holiday, with my parents, and one night Adam planned a surprise overnight stay at the House Hotel on the south coast and claimed it was just to spend time together.” Dinner was booked at one of Jordan’s favourite restaurants, however, Adam had arranged for the evening to be spent al fresco on the restaurant’s veranda where he had lit the pathway leading to it with candles. “I led the way, and as I got to the table I turned around to Adam on one knee popping the question!” recalls Jordan. “The waiter was even ready with a camera to capture a photo of the exact moment!” The big date was set, 6th March 2020, with St Andrews Church Hatfield Peveral and Hatfield Place setting the scene.

FINDING THE LOCATION

When searching for the big-day venue, nothing had stood out to Jordan and Adam. As fate would have it, they were pushed in the direction of Hatfield Place, a new wedding venue due to open, and after hearing about it at a wedding fair they drove straight there on the way home. “When we arrived, it was still partly undergoing building works, however Michelle who runs the venue was on-site and let us have a look around,” shares Jordan. “As soon as we walked into the venue we knew it was the one. We just loved the feel of the place, the entrance hall was beautiful and we felt a connection. It was really exciting seeing the plans of what it was going to be like and knowing we would be one of the first weddings there.” Always wanting a classic, simple and elegant theme for the wedding, Jordan decided on all of the finishing touches ‒ Adam is laid-back and was happy to go with the flow. “For the flowers it was always going to be soft pinks and whites, and our florist Karen came up with some ideas and we decided on various types of style and sizes of roses with a little hydrangea here and there,” adds Jordan. The floral displays were in a mix of high tall vases and low vases, with a display of flowers on the top table and around the table plan, which was displayed on cards pegged onto a six-foot hoop. The cake was a simple four-tier design with pearls covering the top tier and some blush roses down the side, boasting a mixture of flavours: classic jam and buttercream sponge, lemon and even champagne fillings. “One of our favorite things were our table numbers,” says Jordan. “On each one we put photos of ourselves at that particular age, it was such a great idea we spotted online and made a great keepsake too. We decided to donate the money we would of spent on favours to Cancer Research UK. Each guest had a placecard at their dinner setting which included a beautiful little brooch of the Cancer Research symbol. 39

“We loved our wedding meal, we went for a ham hock starter, chicken main and trio of desserts ‒ as well as vegetarian options of course! One thing that I wanted to do was have a cocktail bar at our drinks reception for guests while we were off having our photos. Being a cocktail lover myself, I thought how amazing it would be to have a little pop up bar offering a selection of cocktails ‒ something a little different to the usual fizz and beer. We included a choice of our favourites: passionfruit martini, a gin fizz, an aperol spritz and a raspberry mojito. They went down a treat with our guests.” The couple also considered their guests’ transport needs on the day, and booked a coach to pick up any guests that were staying in the local hotel to take them to the church and wait outside whilst the ceremony took place and then take them from the church to the venue.

LOOKING THE PART Jordan’s Suzanne Neville gown was from local boutique The Bespoke Wardrobe. “I always imagined I would wear a fitted dress with sleeves but as soon as I started dress shopping I knew I needed an A-line dress, it suited my body shape so much more,” shares Jordan. “I spotted an off-the-shoulder neckline which I thought looked stunning and I then had a thought of turning this into a collar style with a turnover that made the look really classic and elegant. I then added a fuller skirt and decided to accessorise with a simple ivory belt with a touch of sparkle in the centre. I also wore a hairpiece and veil with some pearl detailing that caught the light perfectly. The ladies at the boutique were happy to help me design exactly what I wanted. I think we ended up putting together a few styles from around three different dresses that were in the store – I couldn’t of been happier with the end result.” The bridesmaids looked beautiful in blush pink, fitted dresses with flutter sleeves, low backs and a small train to complement the elegant theme. The groom wore a made-to-measure three-piece dinner suit in dark navy with the groomsmen and father-of-the-bride in a similar style. 40

However, Adam styled his with a black waistcoat and bow tie instead of navy like the rest of the groomsmen. He also added a couple of extra details like a pocket watch with chain, and had his suit made out of a slightly different material so he stood out in the photos. “It all came together so well and looked great on the day!” finishes Jordan.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Guests were entertained by a DJ, Brad James, and a saxophonist, the couple’s good friend CJ Sax. “We also had a soul singer to get the night started and everyone in the mood to party,” shares Jordan. “Something a little different that we also booked was a caricaturist. He walked around the venue and people ended up queuing to sit with him he was that popular! It was great because he stamped his work with our wedding date and details, and the drawings made great keepsakes for the guests. “We’re so glad that when planning our wedding we tried to plan it as if we were the guests and what would make our day the best day ever. Because of this, we ended up focusing on food and drink and music and entertainment; we’re so glad we did because that really is what made the atmosphere something to remember forever.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Having the best day of their lives, it’s hard to pick one standout moment but for the couple – after the ceremony of course – it was later in the evening when the DJ was playing Wonderwall by Oasis. “All of our friends had us both on their shoulders and we all just danced and sung at the top our voices, it still makes us emotional now thinking about it!” highlights Jordan. Additionally, the speeches were all memorable with the groom, best man and father-of-the bride all having such funny and sentimental things to say. “Every single one of our guests stated they had the most wonderful day and that means everything to us,” ends Jordan.

icola and Daniel met as teenagers when working at Arundel House Hotel in Cambridge; with Nicola liking Dan’s bum and Dan thinking she was cute and pretty! “Our first date was a trip to the cinema to watch Hancock and then we played pool (Dan won!).” recalls Nicola. “We called ourselves ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’ on 12th July 2008.” Exactly ten years later, Dan proposed to Nicola on 12th July 2018 at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. “It was a surprise, although I was certain he was going to ask! Afterwards we bought a small ornament of the Eiffel Tower and had dinner on the river Seine.” The big date was set, 29th May 2021, with Whittlesford Parish Church and Parklands, Quendon Hall setting the scene.

We started the drinks reception in the gardens, moved to the Tabor Room for the wedding breakfast, and then through to the Pavilion for the evening reception – the surprises for your guests just keep coming! I had always wanted a church wedding and a stately home-style venue for the reception. At Parklands, Quendon Hall the house and grounds are stunningly beautiful with period features within the building. The long drive up to the house adjacent to the deer park makes it all the more magical. The friendly team made us feel relaxed and welcomed.

Our favours were small, travelsized corked bottles containing toffee vodka (which we love) with a bespoke sticker.

For our evening reception in the Pavilion, the tables were decorated with large towering silk floral centrepieces and a large green tree, with Chiavari chairs and floral sashes. 46

We went for a travel theme, naming our tables after destinations we’d visited together – of course the top table was Paris!

I had an oversized bouquet and the bridesmaids had smaller versions, while the flowergirls each had a basket of rose petals to scatter down the aisle. The flowers used were: miss piggy rose (coral colour), coral peony, ivory lisianthus, and sweet avalanche roses.

I wore a floral A-line dress in ivory by Essence of Australia with a long train ‒ an essential criteria, that didn’t disappoint!

I arrived in a Bentley S1 and Dan in an Aston Martin DB9 Coupe while the bridesmaids were transported in a Mercedes V Class.

Dan wore a blue tailored three-piece suit with a white shirt, ivory tie, tan brown leather shoes and matching belt. His buttonhole matched the bridal bouquet and he finished the look with personalised cufflinks I bought as a wedding gift. The groomsmen wore the same attire but had a coral tie which matched the bridesmaids’ dresses.

The bridesmaids wore a coral, fitted, floor-length dress, with their own choice of heels. They wore a white and gold hairpiece which was smaller but similar in style to mine and pearl earrings.

Our cake was cheese to go with our favours! The cheese layers were: Black Bomber, Quickes Devon Red, Colston Bassett Stilton, Aged Manchego, Cornish Camembert and Capricorn. We bought mini Tiptree chutneys and biscuits to serve with it. Laura, my sister, also made Victoria sponge fingers for a sweet treat!

A harpist played Disney songs at the drinks reception which gave a relaxing ambiance and kept our guests entertained whilst they had their canapés overlooking the deer park. 47

We felt elated on the day, we’d been planning our wedding for more than two years and had been on a rollercoaster ride over the last year due to the changing restrictions. We had a caricaturist at the evening reception and he was a big hit with our guests as he brought an air of comedy to the evening. We had a photo booth, DJ, a shot bar, some cocktails and rounded the night off with sparklers!

The ‘dad’s first look’ moment before we got married, seeing each other at the end of the aisle and having confetti thrown over us, were memorable moments.

Olivia (our Reverend) and the Parklands, Quendon Hall team, gave us the wedding day we’d wished and prayed for ‒ we are eternally grateful!

With the help of Natalie, our Parklands, Quendon Hall wedding planner, we came up with the idea to do our first dance outside in the bandstand, to enable everyone to socially distance around us. Even though in the end we didn’t need to, it made for a magical first dance and we were the first couple to do this! The team are now recommending this to their couples to consider as an alternative to the normal dancefloor!

Dan driving us to Parklands, Quendon Hall in the Aston, the speeches, our first dance in the bandstand and throwing my bouquet are memories we will cherish.

hoot coordinator, florist Gillian Fautley of Courts of Rayleigh, was inspired by all the businesses that faced adversity due to the pandemic which heavily affected the wedding industry. “For many in the industry, it wasn’t just about the inability to open our shops, but the wider impact on the industry itself and especially for those independent speciality businesses such as make-up, hair, cake makers, DJs and entertainment companies that literally had nothing, no bookings and no income.” shares Gillian. Gillian was determined to find a way to work together with other affected businesses to promote their services and help to build confidence in the wedding industry again, particularly within Essex itself. Having exhibited at many wedding fayres, and armed with previous photo shoot experience, Gillian pooled together a number of local contacts, several of whom she had previously worked with, and booked a photo shoot at The Lawn, a beautiful Georgian wedding venue situated in Rochford. “All the businesses taking part agreed that the day had the feel of a proper wedding. More importantly, the shoot enabled us to reconnect with each other face-to-face, something we had all missed along with the opportunity to make new industry contacts and to share how we had each adapted to overcome the lockdown experience.’’ adds Gillian. 51

Lynsey Beard says... Floral Folly encompasses my knowledge and passions into one: colour, innovation and design. My style is very different, I do it my way and have always been a bit of a rebel. I decided when I was very young, aged about six, that I wanted to be a designer, to many people this would appear odd or unusual, but to me it was and still is my everything. Sara Anthony says... The birth of By Cindy & Viola came at a time that was, and still is, difficult for the UK and the World and was established in August 2020. With the concept of high quality, every day, standout jewellery, my design vision was to make the customer feel that they are wearing a luxury piece that feels unique to them in their day-to-day life. It’s been challenging to launch a new venture, however with a lot of patience and perseverance I got there. I’ve always had a passion and keen interest in fashion and particularly accessories, but what sparked the interest in all things jewellery was when I got engaged. I became fascinated with the world of gold and semi-precious/precious stones. I attended jewellery classes in London (pre-Covid) which helped gain a further insight, giving me the confidence to create By Cindy & Viola. I began thinking of what I would want to wear day to day, what size of jewellery, how would I want it to be seen; not too small that you feel you are not wearing anything but then not so big that it’s overwhelming. It was about creating that right balance, and to be able to incorporate designs that make women feel they are wearing affordable luxury. I decided that gold plated with semi-precious stones was the direction I wanted to take the designs. The design process began on a few pieces to start a collection. This evolved into the Stars & Stones collection, to build a brand I want to be known for a particular piece. I believe women like their jewellery to be personal and therefore I made the decision that this collection would be a great start. So, to begin this journey the double pendant constellation and birthstone necklace was launched in February 2021. After making the design decisions back in August 2020 the next step was to begin research into studios to create my designs. Top of the list, and the most important, was sustainable materials and fair trade. I was excited to find the right studio in Jaipur, India; so a relationship began and By Cindy & Viola came to life. What does the future hold? I see the Stars & Stones collection growing with the addition of a bracelet, and I intend to branch out with different collections adding new design pieces and working closely with the studio in India.

What’s your most popular product? As previously mentioned this is a double pendant necklace that has your personal zodiac and birthstone. We will be launching the bracelets by the end of 2021. What are the key trends in 2022 for jewellery/accessories? The key trends for 2022 are going to be much like they are today, personal jewellery whether that be initials, name plate, a star sign or a birthstone, they seem to be very high in consumer demand. The 1970s styles are having a come back with charm bracelets and key materials such as shells and pearls. The bigger the better also! With fashion having quite a casual feel to it with people working from home, you can dress a boring t-shirt with a nice chunky necklace to look lovely on that zoom call. What top tip do you have for choosing how to accessorise your big-day look? To go personal with your jewellery is the only way. COVER GIRL Q: Although I’m experimental with my make-up choices, I want a classic bridal look that I’ll love in my photos for years to come; what do you suggest? If you are unsure of what bridal look is for you, I’d start off by asking yourself a couple of key questions: • How do I look when I feel my most beautiful? This will help you to build the vision of what you want to look like on the day ‒ or at least elements of it. • What feature do I want to be my focal point: eyes, lips, complexion? This is also a great place to start because you can easily shift your focus and research into the specifics of building and tailoring your look. Ultimately you want to choose a look that’s going to make you feel incredible on your big day but most importantly something that still feels 78

like you. Having a moodboard will help, considering things like the venue, floral arrangements and your style of dress, these will also help to influence your look. You might consider a non-traditional but classic style, like a bold or red lip paired with a simple eye effect which is both timeless yet makes a statement. If you’re going to experiment with colours on the eye, go for shades that will complement your eye colour so they emphasise your facial features and framework. For example, if you have blue eyes and wanted something non-traditional you may choose tones of copper and peach, or if you have green eyes, a beautiful burgundy statement eyeliner will add an experimental feel but still look classic and clean for photographs. What’s involved in the process and what do I need to do? The bespoke process is a wonderful experience that will allow you to bring to life your dream gown while also seeing each step in its creation. The journey to create a bespoke gown starts with an initial consultation where you can sit with our designer to discuss your vision, look at fabrics, try on sample gowns etc. From this initial consultation, we will create bespoke sketches of your dream gown. During the process we will take your personal measurements to create a sample cotton version of your gown for you to wear as part of the first fitting session with our designer. Once you are completely happy with the fit of your dress, we can then craft the first version of your wedding gown in your selected fabrics; we offer various fitting appointments until you are completely satisfied that your dress is perfect. TURNING HEADS Q: I wanted a cohesive look with myself and my bridesmaids when it comes to our wedding hair; what style could work across a variety of face shapes and hair-lengths so we look unified in our appearance? When it comes to choosing a bridesmaid hairstyle remember these three things: the overall look of your wedding, the dress style, and everyone’s hair types, colours, lengths and thickness. The best way to unify bridesmaid hair is to add a main theme into the style such as twists or braids of which there are many variations. For your hair, maybe you could have it down and theirs up or vice versa, but if you really want the same style, bear in mind that with different length, thickness and colour, it will never look the same on everyone. Another way to unify the look is to add matching accessories, flowers, flower crown or a pretty hair pin. As much as you want a cohesive look you also want happy bridesmaids, each bridesmaid is different so I always ask if they would like hair around their face or away, and ears showing or not showing, as these are the most common things I get asked when styling. Q: I want my bridal look to be as natural as possible; I don’t want to feel ‘caked’ in make-up. What can I do to achieve this? There are several things you could do to achieve a natural look. Start with having an eyelash lift, this enhances and curls the lash making them look longer. You could follow the lash lift with tinting which makes them look fuller and darker. What’s more, you can also tint your eyebrows to enhance the shape and make them look more defined! If you don’t want to feel ‘caked’ in make-up, maybe try a CC cream which evens out skintone and enhances it leaving you with a radiant bridal-ready glow. Q: I’ve found the dress of my dreams, but I have two years before I get married! What do I do? I’m worried I’ll either fall out of love with it, or that it won’t be available nearer the time ‒ help! If you’re a decisive person then go for it! However, if you are a little unsure then wait another six months and revisit the boutique and retry the dress. Dresses do get discontinued, and with very little notice, but I wouldn’t let that rush you into a decision as that’s when mistakes can happen. I would rather a bride take her time and be sure on their choice than panic buy. The last 18 months have probably been the hardest the industry has ever seen. The restrictions we’ve had to face have meant that not only the way people are booking weddings have changed, but also what people are booking. Regardless of restrictions lifting, we’ve seen that a lot of people are still keeping their weddings relatively small and people are choosing to spend their budget which would have gone on more guests, on added luxuries like entertainment. We’ve seen an increase in people booking more immersive experiences and musicians, which provides a more intimate experience allowing guests to feel more involved. We’ve had a lot of free standing aerialists which have been booked, meaning people can be in and amongst the action. Couples are also looking for more versatile acts which will allow them to still perform with any restrictions in place, as we have still felt a lot of uncertainty around big events. Needless to say, people have got a lot of catching up to do and thankfully, we’ve seen bookings being made into the next couple of years, even into 2025! What most people do need now, is trust and flexibility. They need to be able to trust their suppliers and know that whatever the future may hold, Covid-19 restrictions or not, that their suppliers and event organisers will stand by them and they’ll do the same. The post-Covid period is a challenge for many in the wedding industry, but more especially for couples in love, waiting to make their commitment ‒ many of us have shared the journey and the frustrations. I’ve always loved painting people and trying to convey their personality in a likeness. After gaining a BA(Hons) degree in Fine Art and selling my paintings through London-based galleries and at art fairs, I taught art to all ages, from three to 83, which enabled me to share my passion with others. A while ago I ran into an old friend who, since I’d last seen her, had been painting at weddings and seemed very happy! After chatting to her about it and accompanying her to a wedding, I knew this was the job for me. It amalgamates my interests in people and painting, plus I get to live vicariously through others, celebrating love! Describe your wedding services: I offer a bespoke wedding portrait service, including a full consultation to learn what you would like to include in your painting, in terms of colour palette, people, poses, background, etc – though I’m also happy to use my own creative vision if you are unsure. I’ll travel to your venue to paint you and your guests in the setting you have created and I’m always happy to chat to your guests and entertain any questions or interest. To meet the needs of my clients (be they the happy couple or a generous guest) I offer a range of different packages. Options include a choice of canvas size and whether you would like a personal couple portrait or to also include guests in the composition. I use top quality art materials for longevity, as this personalised work of art will be something to keep forever and pass down to future generations. Has there been a favourite wedding you’ve worked? I usually have a video consultation with the couple to get to know them – everyone always seems so excited about their wedding – I couldn’t possibly choose favourites between these lovely, happy people. The best thing about what I do is that no two weddings are the same, every wedding is unique and amazing in its own way. And the way I will interpret it into paint will depend on many other variables too, namely the personalities of the bride and groom. If you look at my paintings, you couldn’t compare two, even if they were both based at the same old church in Rayleigh. What song will get you up on the dancefloor? If I wasn’t busy working, I’d be on that dancefloor! (Probably for the best that I remain professional, as I doubt my dance moves would be gratefully received). I really love listening to music while I’m painting at weddings, especially if it’s live. Have you got a top tip for couples? Yes, get a wedding painter! A painting can illustrate the magic at a celebration. It may be high-end but a unique work of art is something that can be enjoyed forever and by future generations. 86

As students of music, studio regulars, and touring sound engineers for high profile bands, we started performing together in 2012. These gigs quickly turned into requests to perform at private events and festivals. We loved seeing the joy and full dancefloors that we could bring to these events. We perfected our event planning, expanded our repertoire, added members to the band – and the rest is history! Describe your wedding services? The Blue Lion Band is a premium, customisable three- to 14-piece band specialising in high-energy music (at a sensible price). As live music experts, wedding enthusiasts and party starters, we infuse every event with energy and fun and pride ourselves on filling dancefloors. What song will get you up on the dancefloor? We always recommend a variety of songs and genres to get your guests on the dancefloor. Your grandfather loves Sinatra while your niece may love Taylor Swift. It’s important to include a bit of everything! Some personal favourites are Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa, Let’s Dance by David Bowie, No Diggity by Blackstreet, and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. Have you got a top tip for couples? Our top tip is to have fun with planning! There is so much that goes into wedding planning but when the big day comes, so many of the little details won’t matter as much as it seemed they would. As long as you’re surrounded by your loved ones and dancing the night away, the event will be incredible.

Chris says... How did you get in to your profession? I started working in entertainment at quite a young age. I loved playing with puppets and magic with my brother, and I guess I never really grew up. At 17 I went abroad for my first summer season entertaining visitors, and then spent eight years travelling Europe performing, before settling down in Essex and meeting the girl of my dreams! Describe your wedding services? I offer a few different things. I’m a magician ‒ a proud member of the Magic Circle ‒ so can entertain you and your guests with some jaw-dropping magic, and I also offer a children’s show to give the kids something to do during the speeches (and give parents a little rest too). Over lockdown, my wife and I designed and created a nine-hole crazy golf course, so we now offer this as well! I even have a fantastic Father Christmas to accompany my Elf character, which is popular at Christmas weddings, and I’m currently branching out to include candyfloss – with candyfloss faeries as the vendors! What song will get you up on the dancefloor? I’m a grown-up emo kid, so anything a bit scene. I love Bowling For Soup, Blink 182 anything I can bounce around to and rock out to. Have you got a top tip for couples? My top tip for couples planning their wedding is to enjoy it. Planning your wedding can be as fun as the day itself. There’s so much cool stuff to choose from, and it really is a celebration, because you’ve found someone you love and want to be with – so have fun! 89
