Cliffs Pavilion is the largest performing arts venue in Essex – and also one of the most iconic buildings in Southend. Work began on the original Cliffs Pavilion during the 1930s, when it was intended to be a 500-seat theatre incorporating the Art Deco style of the time. With the outbreak of World War II, however, the building work halted, with it eventually opening in 1964.

Set in the most picturesque location on Southend’s famous cliff top, Cliffs is a fantastic space to hold your wedding day. With panoramic

As the sun starts to set, why not head into the whimsical woodland to discover the fire-pit, where you can toast marshmallows and sip hot chocolate and liqueurs while you share old stories – and create new memories under the stars?

At the heart of a vast walled estate you’ll find Braxted Park’s magnificent country house and its stunning gardens. Combing elegance and romance throughout its interior, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to saying, ‘I do’. The Orangery exudes romance, with Roman-inspired murals and arched windows that look out over the grounds. Alternatively, during the warmer months, tie the knot outdoors at the heart of the walled garden as your guests soak up the sun. Lauren and Russ went all-out for their incredible wedding after finding each other online

Lauren met Russ on dating app Bumble. “We had our first date on the 1st October, 2016 – and had already booked two holidays together six weeks later!” laughs the bride. “I loved how Russ made me laugh without even meaning to. He’s kind and thoughtful, and we have similar ambitions. Life just feels exciting being with him. Russ says he fell for my kindness, positive attitude towards life, and the way I can light up any room I’m in with my personality.”

Fast forward two and a half years and the couple were enjoying an all-inclusive holiday to Mexico. “It was our last night and we went to the hotel’s premium restaurant which you had to pay extra for,” continues Lauren. “Russ conveniently forgot his card, so I paid, and we went back to the bar to meet friends. At the end of the night, we walked back to our room only to hear music playing from inside – which Russ seemed equally confused by. I walked in to Spanish music and rose petals over the floor and on the bed, along with a bottle of Champagne. Even then I had no idea, especially when Russ said he simply wanted to thank me for our holiday! He went to the safe to take his watch off and came back with his hands behind his back, before producing a ring. I can’t remember a word he said – but it was still the happiest moment of my life.”

The couple chose the 15th October, 2021 for their wedding, saying ‘I do’ at Braxted Park. Here, Lauren tells us all about their incredible day…

After cancelling our wedding abroad thanks to COVID, wewanted to choose somewhere close to home. Braxted Park isonly five minutes from my parents’ house and when growingup I always said I’d get married there!

Each table was somewhere we’d been on holiday together. Mexico was the top table where we got engaged – and we even had Mallorca, which was the location of our original wedding venue.

I wanted to include an orchid and some pampas in my bouquet for texture. Our florist went one step further and added a dried pink feather, which blew me away when I saw it for the first time.

The centrepieces were designed around the flowerdecorations on the top table. All our candles were LED, sowe didn’t have to worry about accidents, plus we wantedsomething simple in keeping with the rest of the décor.

Have a celebrant instead of a registrar. You don’t need to follow any rules and the ceremony is personal to you as a couple. All our guests loved it – Olivia had people laughing and crying throughout.

We had gold and white lanterns above the dance floor to fit inwith the theme, and a gold shimmer wall with light up lettersand a beautiful balloon garland.

We included decorations in the style of our chihuahua, Rio,and Russ’ family dog, Buttons for our cake toppers. The toplayer was chocolate, and the bottom Victoria sponge, whichwent down a treat!

For the wedding breakfast we enjoyed mini cheese toasties with soup, a sharing platter of lamb, and mini pavlovas and sticky toffee pudding. We also had bacon baps and cheesy chips later on that night.

My dress was the Enzoani Odelia design. When wemoved our wedding from Spain to the UK, I wasinstantly excited as it meant I could wear sleeves! Iteamed it with a veil and Victoria Percival headband.

After the ceremony and group shots I took my sleeves off to create a second look, and had my hair styled into a low pony. I also changed to a different headband, which was handmade during lockdown by my seamstress.

At 10pm I then changed into a bespoke jumpsuit! I was so excited to put it on, and I loved how our guests said they’d never seen anything like it before. It had a detachable bow with a train, which added to the bridal look – and made for some great photos.

Russ wore a black velvet suit along with a Hermès bow tie,which I bought as a gift to open on the morning. It turns outhe’d never worn a proper bow tie before, so it caused a littlestress for him and his friends on the morning!

As it was black tie dress code, Russ asked his groomsmen to wear their own tuxes. We’ve been to many black tie weddings with them, so he knew everyone had one and there’d be no stress with fittings or expense.

I wanted my bridesmaids to wear long sage green dresses,however, I let them choose their own styles. My maid ofhonour was my sister, so we designed her dress differently soshe’d stand out from the others.

After entering the pavilion we went straight into dancing the Hora, which is tradition at a Jewish wedding. It was the first time many of my friends had experienced this, and everyone had so much fun.

During dinner a string quartet created a nice, relaxing atmosphere. I saw them perform on an open day at Braxted Park and it immediately reminded me of Bridgerton! I knew we had to have them at our wedding.

Melissa and David met in the summer of 2018. “We matched on a dating website,” says Melissa. “We clicked right away, and after a few weeks of talking, we decided to meet for our first date. We went to a local restaurant and talked so much that every time our waitress came over, we still hadn’t looked at the menu. Neither of us had much experience with online dating, so we weren’t really sure what to expect, but the transition from talking online to meeting in person was easy, and we quickly became inseparable.”

After a couple of years together and numerous proposal plans spoiled by lockdown restrictions, David finally popped the question.

“I’d planned to propose in France on holiday with my family, but the trip was cancelled due to COVID-19,” shares David. “Several of my back-up plans were also disrupted, so I asked Melissa to marry me in front of her family on Christmas Day.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Once David had proposed, we started wedding planning right away,” explains Melissa. “We were in the middle of one of the many lockdowns, so searching for a wedding venue was difficult. We arranged video calls with several properties and relied on virtual tours to help make our decision. We knew we wanted a rustic venue, so when we came across Houchins in Coggeshall, it immediately grabbed our interest. The team took the time to show us around the site, and we fell in love with it within minutes. From our first enquiry to our wedding day, the staff were wonderful, and nothing was too muchMelissatrouble.”and

David opted for wooden place names from Personalise365, which also doubled up as favours. “We’ve been to several weddings where the favours were left at the end of the night, so we wanted something personal that our guests could keep,” recalls the bride. “These tied in well with our theme, and our friends and family loved“Ourthem.centrepieces

were concrete planters from CraftyLittleCactus,” continues Melissa. “We wanted something that represented our relationship and mutual interests, so we opted for a variety of designs from various films and games. We placed these on log slices and our florist, Miss Fleur Floral Design, added a trio of vases full of pink and white blooms. We loved the final look, and several of our guests asked to take home the planters.”

The happy couple planned their colour scheme around their flowers. “I came across some of Miss Fleur Floral Design’s work on Instagram and instantly fell in love with her style,” adds the bride. “I contacted Kelly and chose options from her ready-made wedding package. David and I opted for oversized bouquets, buttonholes, centrepieces, pew ends and a large arrangement, which we used for the ceremony and top table.

“For the cake, we chose a three-tiered semi-naked design from The Gourmet Cake Company,” says Melissa. “The bottom tier was chocolate, the middle was lemon and the top Victoria sponge. We decorated the cake with flowers provided by our florist and a personalised cake topper from Artlocke Designs. We were sad that our beloved cat, Kiki, couldn’t be a part of our day, so we felt the topper was a fun way of incorporating her. We adored the final design, and it’s now proudly on display in our home.”

For their food, the couple opted for a sit-down barbecue provided by Limeberry Events Catering. “I’m a fussy eater, so the idea of a threecourse meal didn’t really appeal to me,” shares the bride. “We discussed our options with our caterer and decided on a barbecue made up of burgers, salmon and halloumi followed by a chocolate brownie for dessert. The food was delicious! When it came to our evening catering, we wanted something quite relaxed. We booked Lot 33 Pizza, who provided wood-fired pizzas that our guests loved. We chose four different flavours, and there was none left at the end of the night.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“Initially, I wasn’t sure what style of dress I wanted,” recalls Melissa. “I knew I didn’t want anything too big as I’m only 5ft 3in but at the same time, a tight-fitted gown was too far out of my comfort zone. I’d looked through a number of different dresses online, and asked David for his opinion. He picked out a handful of gowns that he liked, and when I visited the store the next day, I made sure to include two of those in my selection. The second dress I tried on was David’s favourite, and it turned out to be the one. It was an A-line gown with three-quarter-length sleeves, lace detailing and a deep V neckline. Once my seamstress, Alter & Drape, had finished the alterations, I fell in love with the dress even more. I accessorised with a pearl necklace that my bridesmaids bought me, earrings, a bracelet from my mum and a gorgeous hair piece from Lace & Favour. My hair was curled and pinned up by Peri Orrin Bridal Hair Stylist, and Leanne Perilly Make Up Artist worked her magic to create a very soft and natural look.”

David chose a blue three-piece suit from Anthony Formal Wear. The groomsmen opted for blue waistcoats, while David had a chequered grey version to help him stand out.

“My lovely bridesmaids wore sage green gowns from David’s Bridal,” explains the bride. “I wanted the girls to feel comfortable on the day, so I asked them to choose their own dresses. Olivia and Kelly happened to fall in love with the same gown, while Nolwenn opted for a slightly different design. They all looked stunning and I was extremely proud to have them by my side.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

David and Melissa booked a band to keep their guests entertained during the reception. “We looked at several different options before coming across Tropic,” reveals Melissa. “This three-piece band was fantastic. They kept everyone on the dancefloor and learned our first dance song for us, which I actually preferred over the original! We also hired a photo booth from KMS Hire. This was great fun, and our friends and family loved it. Copies of each photo were stuck in a book for us to

keep, and we loved looking back at it the next day.”

“One of our favourite moments was Kelly’s song that she performed with David after the meal,” adds the bride. “David and Kelly had spent months secretly practising together in preparation for the big day. They performed one of my favourite songs, A Thousand Years by Christina Perri, and it was beautiful! David was quite nervous about playing guitar for the first time in front of an audience, but they sounded amazing, and it’s a moment that I’ll always treasure.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“Seeing all our friends and family together in one place was an amazing feeling,” adds the bride. “I thought I’d be nervous on the morning of the wedding, but I was incredibly calm. Knowing I was about to marry the love of my life made all those nerves I had in the run up to the wedding just disappear. I also loved walking down the aisle with my dad and was incredibly proud to have him with me for support. The rest of the day passed by in a blur, but it truly was one of the best moments of our lives.”

“Every person I’d spoken to before the wedding said how quickly the day goes, and they weren’t wrong,” shares David. “The morning felt like a lifetime in anticipation, but when I saw Melissa it was so worth it. She was stunning, and I’ll never forget the sight of her walking down the aisle, beaming from ear to ear. After the ceremony, I was surprised by how relaxed I felt for the remainder of the day but I was still a bit apprehensive about the speech. I’d spent hours writing what I thought was the perfect speech only to have a change of heart the night before and decided to ad-lib 90 per cent of what I’d come up with!”

Melissa and David were over the moon with how the day went.

“Every single one of our suppliers was brilliant,” says Melissa. “We would highly recommend them to anyone. Our photographer and videographer helped us stay calm and made us feel like we were hanging out with two friends rather than posing for our pictures. Our friends and family were also there to help us every step of the way and I don’t think we could have planned such a wonderful day without them.”

Disney fans Aidan and Ellen enjoyed an amazing celebration at Parklands Quendon Hall

Ellen met Aidan on dating site Plenty of Fish. “I liked the fact we both had smiley photos as profile pictures, and not pouty or moody ones,” says Ellen. “When we first met Aidan was a proper gentleman, choosing the location and travelling the furthest to meet. From then on in we always ended up having the most amazing time, and were often kicked out of places because they were closing, and we’d lost track of time.”

Aidan proposed to Ellen in Scotland – in a car park! “It wasn’t what he’d originally planned,” continues the bride. “After landing at Glasgow airport, one of Aidan’s friends met us with a Mini Cooper Convertible – my favourite car – and we drove for 100 miles through

the Scottish Highlands. I presumed we were driving to our hotel, but it was only when Aidan let slip that we weren’t staying where we were driving that I got the hint he might propose. We eventually got to the car park closest to the Harry Potter Glenfinnan viaduct, only to discover it was an hour’s trek to get there – and it was nearly pitch black!

Aidan got down on one knee there and then in the car park and proposed. We vowed to go back one day and actually see the viaduct, but it’s been three years now and we still haven’t managed it!”

The couple married on Saturday 5th February 2022, choosing Parklands Quendon Hall as their venue. Here, Ellen tells us more about their day…

We knew we had to be sensible with a February wedding – no outdoor marquees or barns! Aidan loves big country houses, so Parklands was perfect. It gave us the inside space we needed, and had a natural flow through the movement of the rooms.

We’re both Disney fans, so chose a subtle theme of Minnie and MickeyMouse, along with blue and silver colours. We incorporated this into ourguest book and even our wedding favours, with key bottle openers with aMickey head on the top.

Our florist was amazing at fitting our flowers around our colour scheme. We wanted the top table to be blue, but not too different from the rest. I also had my bouquet wrapped in a polka ribbon like Minnie Mouse’s hair bow, choosing blue instead of red.

For our centrepieces we opted for blossom trees, placed on boxes made by my grandad to give it a rustic feel. They even had little fairy lights intertwined between the branches to add to the romance.

Each table was named after a location we visited on holiday to New York. The table plan was designed as a map of the city, with arrows to the locations, and each place name was designed as a mini plane ticket.

We went to Costco for our cake, as the flavour was more important to us than the decorations! We chose three cakes in Victoria sponge, chocolate and red velvet, and my grandad made boxes for us to display them on in a tiered manner.

I chose the Delancey dress from Web2B, a sweetheart strapless satin design with a long train and statement bow at the back. I also added their Kensington lace top over the dress, as well as a small tiara and silver glitter high heels.

My bridesmaids wore dusty blue Haven dresses from Wed2B, accessorising with grey scarves over their shoulders to keep them warm outside. The groomsmen wore the same waistcoat as Aidan, along with a royal blue two-piece suit.

Our ceremony was a real stand-out moment for me. Aidan and I held hands so tightly, and didn’t let go. It really calmed us both but showed how much this moment meant to both of us.

For the evening we booked a DJ and arcade games. It wasn’t a massiveparty, as our friends aren’t really big dancers – but everyone loved thearcade games!

Aidan is very extravagant, so his grey check three-piece suit with blue pin stripe was perfect. He also loves bow ties, wearing a navy-blue design with pocket square to complete the look.

Aidan works in the car industry and loves his cars, so we had an Aston Martin DBS V12 Super Leggera to pose with on the day. We drove off in it the morning after, for a much-needed spa day.

My maid of honour had a sickness bug, so wasn’t up to reading her speech. She gave it to her husband instead, who started by saying, “I’m the maid of honour, the bride’s best friend,” which got a fair few laughs!

While we waited for our evening guests, Aidan and I went to the venue’s Honeymoon Cottage with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. We spent some quiet time revelling in the day, and relaxing as husband and wife.

My dad and I danced to MyGirl by The Temptations… but what my dad didn’t know is it would end with The Muppets’ Mahna Mahna, which was what we sang to each other over the phone while I was at uni. His reaction was amazing – as you can see by the photo!.

The small details are important, but they aren’t the be all and end all. They might matter to you, but not everyone will notice them.

There are a lot of wedding shoots out there that focus on boho styling or even rock ’n’ roll, but I wanted to capture the fun of a couple’s big day,” explains Zhana. “I’m a music and festival lover and envisaged a collection of looks that channelled those vibes into a celebration – as well as incorporating a lot of glitter. I love glitter – and doing this shoot was my dream come true!

“Shot during Pride month, with the bright colours it felt right to work with a same sex couple to bring our vision to life. Working with a real couple always feels so much more genuine, and Michele and Graz have been brilliant on previous shoots. They

also told me how they struggled to find suppliers for their own wedding that were LGBTQ+ friendly, and it was important to create a collective that were completely inclusive, living by the manta ‘love is love’.

“Using private land gave us the versatility to set everything up exactly how we wanted – space for an outdoor ceremony, glamping tents, tipi marquee, dressing room tents and lots of beautiful land to play with. Given the past few years, outdoor weddings are on the rise, and it felt great to show the art of the possible.”

My mum is going on about us getting a chimney sweep to attend our wedding as she’s adamant it’s tradition. What’s she going on about?

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon). There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover.
