Searching for the one

Ican’t believe this is our April/May issue already, time is flying by, and if you’re courting down the days until your wedding, don’t worry, it will be here before you know it!

This is one of my favourite issues as I love seeing the new wedding dress collections be revealed. I got married last year and so I know how stressful finding your dream dress can be. I’m short, curvy and very self-conscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns. I had no idea of what style I wanted, a fishtail made me feel like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it and a ballgown swamped me, but luckily my bridal consultant suggested an A-line silhouette, which suited my figure. If you’re looking for your dress and feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available, make sure you listen to your consultant. They have years of experience and have helped brides of every shape and size find their dream gown, so they will know what looks good on you even if you don’t yourself.

Lastly, don’t panic if you don’t have that overwhelming this is the one feeling, as I didn’t myself, just trust your gut and go for something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident. For more inspiration, head over to our fashion pages, which are full of stunning on-trend styles, including ruffled tulle, satin layers, lace and subtle pleats.

CHEYLESMORE MANOR HOUSE, CV1 2HL

02476 833 141 | www.ceremoniesinsidecoventry.co.uk/ cheylesmoremanorceremonysuite

Cheylesmore Manor House is the remnants of a Medieval royal palace in Coventry city centre. The magnificent timber building is a key piece of Coventry’s rich and important heritage. Previously the only unfortified royal palace outside of London, Cheylesmore Manor House is now used as a stunning ceremony venue.

The manor is believed to have been built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237. By 1320 it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her grandson Edward, the Black Prince, took possession of it after her. The building we know today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings of the original manor house.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

The property houses three ceremony rooms: The Queen Isabella Room, The Black Prince Room and the Library Room. The Black Prince Room

ASHTON LODGE COUNTRY HOUSE, CV23 0PJ 01788 460 112 | www.ashtonlodgecountryhouse.com

retains a wealth of original features, including a magnificent vaulted beamed ceiling with an impressive stone fireplace and is furnished to a high standard with Medieval chandeliers. Once the ceremony is over, guests will exit from the room via a winding staircase down to a huge oak door leading into a large stone flagged courtyard, where a section of the city wall still remains. A small wooden bridge within the courtyard provides delightful opportunities for photographs and memories of the special day. This is the largest of the manor’s ceremony rooms accommodating 50 people.

The Queen Isabella Room, with its beautiful beams, is tastefully furnished to a high standard. The room accommodates up to 20 people, including the couple and their witnesses; with direct access into the room from the archway outside.

Alternatively, The Library Room can hold up to 10 people, including the couple and their witnesses. The room is on the ground floor of the manor house making it accessible for wheelchair users.

There’s magic in the air

Karina and Ed tied the knot at The Fairlawns Hotel & Spa surrounded by their friends and family Images courtesy of Lee Hawley Photography

Like most modern couples, Karina and Ed met online. “It took me two days to message back as I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go through with the subscription service, and funny enough Ed was just about to cancel his,” says Karina. “Luckily, he received my message just in time! Our mutual love of animals and hobbies sparked our initial conversations and we became inseparable. Ed proposed in 2021 during a holiday to Centre Parcs, when we were visited by a stag at our lodge; it was magical.”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 23

We wanted a venue that meant something to us but also had really good food. Ed fell in love with The Fairlawns Hotel & Spa when he visited and we loved that we could spend the whole day with our family and friends; nowhere else compared. We had a spa day the day before our wedding and enjoyed a meal with friends and family that had travelled to celebrate with us.

Ed and I wanted to incorporate our personalities and interests into our décor. We both love Star Wars, Disney, Marvel and Harry Potter, so wanted to include these without it seeming cartoon-like or tacky.

The cake was four tiers and each tier resembled a flavour and symbols from Harry Potter, Marvel, Disney and Star Wars. We chose double chocolate, red velvet, cherry bakewell and lemon meringue, which went down very well with everyone.

I chose a paper bouquet made from the pages of our favourite stories. Ed and the groomsmen had paper buttonholes containing a Star Wars charm, and the women of the family had ivory paper corsages with a Disney charm. The bridesmaids carried small matching bouquets, and our dogs wore floral collars and dresses.

We chose glass bowls as our centrepieces with a gold candle in the centre surrounded by flowers.

24
Our favours were gold paper roses with the guest’s name on and a Ferrero Rocher with gold wings to resemble golden snitches from Harry Potter.

My dress was called Elevated Belle by Allure Bridals in the Disney Collection at Ava May Bridal. I chose to add Tinkerbelle-style straps in the same material and a tiara and veil to complete the look. I felt like a Disney princess every time I wore the dress, and Ava May Bridal was fantastic in helping with my vision. I accessorised with heart earrings from Ed and a Disney charm from my mum.

The Fairlawns Hotel & Spa provided the DJ for the evening reception, and we arranged for Booth Factor to set up a magic mirror photo booth for a few hours. It was a hit with our guests and meant we have a great selection of highly amusing photos.

My four bridesmaids chose flutter sleeve gowns from David’s Bridal. They accessorised with their own jewellery, silver shoes and matching hair clips. We added simple diamante belts to the waists and a more elaborate belt to the maid-of-honour’s dress.

Ed wore a navy-blue suit with a matching tie from Tuxedo Junction. His waistcoat complemented his suit which was made from his favourite Star Wars fabric by Sam at Ava May Bridal. He accessorised with Star Wars cufflinks and a watch. The groomsmen wore the same suit with plain waistcoats and different cufflinks.

It was lovely using the wedding garden at The Fairlawns Hotel & Spa. The children especially enjoyed the wooden seesaws, which kept them occupied while the photos were being taken.

We were both excited and nervous for 2pm to come around. The bridal prep suite was busy with hair and make-up while the groomsmen were a little more serine. It’s true that the day just flies by.

REAL WEDDINGS 25

Having our photos taken with our lightsabers after getting married was one of our favourite moments.

The dogs walking down the aisle with the bridesmaids had a great response from our guests.

We booked the team at Michelle G Makeup Artistry to do makeup for myself and the bridal party, however, two days before the wedding our hairdresser became sick with covid. Michelle stepped in straight away, and her team helped keep everyone calm on the morning too.

Our top tip for any couple would be to go with the flow, as not everything is going to go to plan on the day.

We chose to go to a resort in Barbados for our honeymoon as we wanted to relax and do something that we never had before. It was two weeks of sheer luxury, and we loved every minute and would go back in a heartbeat.

Enchanted romance

Emily and Martin opted for earthy hues for their big day at Keele Hall Images courtesy of GingerJam Photography

28

and Martin met in 2018 when Martin stopped by the pub where Emily was working. “Martin has always said he was attracted to me as soon as he saw me, so much so that when he came to order his drink, he wanted to say ‘hi’ and ‘how are you?’ but instead, he fumbled his words, and all that he said was ‘how?’,” laughs Emily. “This made me laugh, so we started to chat, and things grew from there. Martin proposed in June 2021 whilst we were having cocktails at The Shard in London. We’ve always loved weekends away in London, but this was a complete surprise. It was a really hot day, and Martin was wearing a suit and sweating a lot which I thought was because of the high temperature, but it turned out it was actually down to nerves.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“We wanted a venue that was local and felt like us,” says Emily. “We browsed several properties which were beautiful but didn’t feel right. As a couple, we have always enjoyed walks around the grounds at Keele Hall, and it’s somewhere that we knew we would visit plenty of times in the future. We were shown around the venue and instantly fell in love with it; it was large and grand but also somehow still felt cosy and welcoming. The wedding packages that they offered were brilliant in terms of cost and choice, and it was also expressed many times that no request was too big or small.

“We didn’t want a specific theme exactly, however autumnal and earthy tones felt suited to the décor of Keele Hall, so we were drawn to these colours,” adds the bride. “We focussed a lot on having a day that included the guests and made it memorable for them as much as it would be for us. Martin and I love reading books of any kind, so Keele Hall having an old library was perfect. We made our table numbers by framing pages from an old book. Each table was a different chapter and we decorated these with dried flowers from our garden. Our table plan was a board created to look like a large open book with the different chapters as the table numbers and the name cards were handmade resin bookmarks with dried flowers and foliage.”

The happy couple gave their guests heart-shaped lollies with a small tag attached thanking them for sharing their first meal as husband and wife. “We also added disposable cameras to the table for guests to enjoy getting their own shots,” shares Emily. “The centrepieces matched the autumnal theme with different sized vases with flowers and foliage mixed in. My mum helped create a lot of the flower arrangements as she is friends with our florist, LET Designs, so arriving at the venue in the morning and taking in everything that they had created was a lovely surprise.”

Martin’s mum created the couple’s cake which was a lovely surprise for them on the day. “Martin’s side of the family is Ukrainian, so we wanted to add Ukrainian traditions into our wedding day; during the ceremony, we stood on a Rushnyk (an embroidered cloth), the first person to step on the cloth symbolises who would make all the important decisions and lead the marriage, so we stepped on this together to symbolise being a team through life and marriage,” explains Emily. “The Ukrainian touches also carried on to our wedding breakfast as the chef at Keele Hall created a three-course Ukrainian meal based on old family recipes which we had provided. We also changed into traditional Ukrainian dress for the evening, Martin in a Vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt) and myself in a Vinok (floral headdress handmade by my mum).“

Anthony James Wedding Cars provided the transport on the day. “The package we chose offered a car for me and also for Martin, and as the ceremony and reception were at the same venue, they suggested a short private car journey with fizz after the ceremony to allow everything to sink in,” recalls Emily. “We thought this was a wonderful touch, and our guests were too busy enjoying the games and ice cream to even notice we had gone!”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Emily chose a beautiful wedding dress called Bianca from Roberta’s Bridal. “I originally wanted it to be cut down to above the knee and have a short wedding dress, but I completely changed my mind the second I tried it on,” says Emily. “It was satin, corseted at the top, which was very flattering, and it had pockets! I finished my look by adding a crystal belt and a choppy veil. ”

Martin and the groomsmen wore suits by Marc Darcy. The groomsmen opted for brown shoes and navy ties, while Martin wore a different tie, waistcoat and shoes in order to stand out. The couple’s bridesmaid chose a burgundy dress that matched Martin’s waistcoat.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We wanted to keep the guests and kids entertained,” shares the bride. “We had Karen Daniels play the piano throughout the ceremony, the drinks reception and the breakfast. She played a range of songs that added a romantic and tranquil atmosphere to the day. All the guests commented on how lovely she played, and she brought her own portable piano, so she was able to follow us around the venue. We also had a vintage ice cream van from Dotty About Ice Cream arrive just after the ceremony, which added a lovely touch for the guests whilst Martin and I were whisked away for a private moment.

“We handmade all of our lawn games, which the kids loved and kept them entertained for hours,” shares Emily. “Along with the games, we made a large photo frame containing the wedding photos of each of our married guests, labelled ‘generations of love’.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“We felt nervous and excited on the morning of the wedding, but were blissfully happy,” remembers Emily. “I remember standing looking at Martin during the ceremony with all our family and closest friends behind us, I can’t remember a single word that we said to each other as I was so nervous, but the moment I looked at Martin, and he looked back I felt so happy and in love. Martin sat at the top table after he had finished his speech and took a moment to look at all the guests enjoying themselves, holding my hand and feeling on top of the world. These are two moments we both talk about regularly when reminiscing about our wedding day.

“As Martin has family and friends in Ukraine, one of the most special moments of the day was having a FaceTime call from one of Martin’s friends, Viktor, who couldn’t make it to the wedding day,” adds the bride. “Viktor found the time to FaceTime Martin just before I walked down the aisle to wish him good luck and again in the evening to say congratulations. This was an amazing thing which we both loved. Viktor has since been killed in the war, so this moment is even more special to us both now.”

Chris from GingerJam Photography captured the couple’s stunning day. “Chris really did go above and beyond and deserves so much recognition,” explains Emily. “From the moment we sent an email enquiring about the packages he offered he was nothing but helpful and friendly, and on the day, Chris was more like a wedding planner, organiser, coordinator, drink holder and therapist all in one! He was such a calming influence on the morning whilst I was getting ready, chatted away with the guests and making people laugh, there was never any pressure to pose too much or have our photos taken at a certain time. Chris’ style meant he captured even the smallest of moments whilst we were all busy enjoying ourselves. I’ve tried multiple times to sum up how brilliant Chris was as our photographer, but nothing seems to come close to how truly amazing he is! Each time we look at our wedding photos, it’s like living the whole day again.”

HONEYMOON

“We went to Praiano in Italy for two weeks for our honeymoon,” says Emily. “We both planned the trip as we wanted something luxurious and nothing gets more luxurious than drinking cocktails along the Amalfi Coast. It was a little slice of paradise and the perfect spot to start life as newlyweds.”

Fall in love

Summer and Samuel celebrated their autumnal-themed wedding at Ansty Hall

Images courtesy of Russell Whitehead Photography

Summer and Samuel met during a night out in a pub. Their relationship blossomed and in May 2021, Samuel popped the question. “I was pregnant with our first child, and we had just been to our first scan,” says Summer. “Once we got home, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL
35
WEDDINGS

Every time we drove past Ansty Hall, we always said that we wanted to tie the knot there. It’s so beautiful and overlooks a lovely view. We decided to stay there one night after we got engaged and knew instantly that it was the place we were going to get married.

For our favours, we gave our guests jam made from the plums in our garden. We also created jars filled with the dry ingredients needed to create apple cinnamon muffins. As the theme was autumnal, we liked the idea of harvesting and giving our guests food.

I created our table plan from a pallet that I painted to look rustic and wrote everyone’s names on tags.

Our centrepieces were different coloured pumpkins, which we picked at our local farm. They were placed on log slices along with flowers from The Village Flower Shop.

The Cake Shop Bedworth Ltd provided our three-tiered cake, which was covered in white fondant and autumnal flowers. Ansty Hall provided our five-course wedding breakfast and evening buffet.
36

My dress was from The Bridal Gallery in Brinklow. Sarah, who works at the boutique, made a cape that popped on and off my dress. I wanted something extra but was not keen on having a veil, so when Sarah suggested the cape, I fell in love with the idea instantly. She also added some puffy sleeves, and as the whole gown was shimmery it was perfect for Bonfire Night!

On the morning of the wedding, we were both terrified! I was so scared and just felt sick constantly. Samuel said he was nervous once everyone started to come into the ceremony room.

One of my favourite moments was seeing Samuel well up when I walked down the aisle. I also loved telling my dad that I was pregnant with our second child, just before we walked down the aisle. We told Sam’s parents that we were expecting later that day, and the photographer captured the moment and their reactions.

The bridesmaids opted for blue dresses with long sleeves, as I knew it would be chilly in November! Ansty Hall provided a DJ who kept our guests entertained during the reception.
REAL WEDDINGS 37
Samuel and the groomsman chose teal-coloured suits with neutral waistcoats and burnt orange ties from The Wedding Barn.

Years before we got engaged, my brother asked if we ever got married, could he be the ring bearer? I responded with a flat-out no, as he has a habit of losing things. Then I picked up two stones from the floor and said, if at any point between now and the moment we get engaged, you can retrieve these stones whenever I ask, we will let you be the ring bearer. Well, he was true to his word and over the years, I would randomly ask if he could go and get the stones, and every single time he was able to get them and show them to me, so he ended up being our ring bearer.

Lucy, the master of ceremonies, was just incredible and made the day run so smoothly. We were so nervous, but she kept us both calm. She was also amazing at helping keep my pregnancy a secret by filling my glass with nozeco so that no one would notice I wasn’t drinking alcohol.

We had a family moon in Yorkshire. We stayed in a converted barn for a week and shut off from the world, which was much needed after a chaotic few months in the run-up to the wedding. It was lovely to spend quality time as a family with our little boy.

Our top tip is whatever happens on the day, just go with it! Take some time together between the end of the wedding breakfast and the start of the evening reception; we had about half-an-hour to go up to our room, kick off our shoes off and lie on the bed. It gave us a bit of time to recharge and also a break from the madness of the day.

THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

Local photographers showcase some of their favourite images

Nowthat weddings are back in full swing, we wanted to celebrate with a fabulous photography feature full of wonderful images from some of the area’s best photographers.

“This particular couple had been through some real hardships in the build-up to their special day, and it was a close call as to if the wedding would go forward or not. This photo, for me, symbolises them looking at each other as if to say, ‘we did it’. They were so in love with one another, and it was a pleasure to capture their special day.” – Meg Quick from Meg Quick Photography.

“Our job is to observe and capture real moments that will stay with our couples for the rest of their lives.” – Karolina and Mario from Bluebell Photo Studio.

“This image is from a wedding I did last year. It's one of my absolute favourites because I know the journey this couple went through to get their beautiful twins, and this image shows mum and daughter sharing a very special moment before the ceremony. Every girl dreams of their wedding day, and a cheeky moment under her mother’s veil is sure to have made her feel like a princess.” – Georgina Ford from Georgina Mai Photography.

“I take a bottle of bubbly to all my weddings, so I can create a relaxed image, which is great fun and gives the couples a beautiful photo to look back on.” – Darren Powell from Everybody Smile Photography.

“This image from Vicki and Steven’s ceremony is one of my favourites.” – Leon Heynes from Leon Heynes Videography & Photography.

“Our favourite images are authentic and not staged.” – Karolina and Mario from Bluebell Photo Studio.

“In this photo, the couple had just completed the confetti tunnel and the bride’s expression is of pure happiness.” – Darren from Everybody Smile Photography.

“This wedding was so breathtaking; I remember listening to the pianist playing Clair De Lune and thinking this wedding is like a movie; it’s still a favourite of mine.” – Meg from Meg Quick Photography.

“This shot shows the bride, her mother and grandmother’s wedding rings. I love it because it shows three generations of happy marriages.” –Georgina from Georgina Mai Photography.

“This is Jess and Gary rocking each other’s world.” – Leon from Leon Heynes Videography & Photography.

“Your wedding day can be very emotional, and at times stressful, however this couple got it just right and enjoyed every minute. All day they were laughing and having fun, which showed how perfect they are for each other. At the end of all the group shots, I love doing a champagne shot where the groom pops a bottle and the rest of the wedding party cheers. It’s one of my absolute favourite moments of the day and was perfect for this couple who were already having so much fun.” –

“Lots of couples feel uncomfortable about having a posed photo taken; here I wanted to create a cool shot that the couple would love and could show off on social media.” – Darren from Everybody Smile Photography.

“For me, this photo shows pure happiness. Kaiye and Ben were from two completely different parts of the world, and their families had travelled from all over to be with them.” – Meg from Meg Quick Photography.

Ethereal romance

A team of local suppliers worked together to create this autumnal styled shoot

Images courtesy of Elizabeth Brown Photographer

Beth Martin from Wildlings & Aster and photographer Elizabeth Brown worked together to create this ethereal set of images. “The shoot was initially planned to have an outdoor, boho vibe,” says Beth. “As the shoot came

together, Elizabeth’s editorial edge and experience steered the shoot to utilise the natural autumn light at sunset, which would prove integral to the vibe of the entire shoot. We were extremely lucky and excited to be able to include Libby, the beautiful pony, which made the shoot feel even more special.”

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

We’re thinking of hiring a celebrant for our upcoming wedding, is there anything we should take into consideration before booking?

The first thing you need to know is that celebrants are currently only able to offer symbolic ceremonies. This means to make your ceremony ‘legal’ you will need to arrange to give notice and a legal signing of documents at your local registry office. Some people prefer to arrange for a registrar to come to their venue in addition to the celebrant, but this is more expensive and reduces the possibilities of what time and place the service can take place.

There are lots of celebrants to choose from, and they all offer different things. A good celebrant will be interested in listening to your ideas and finding out what you’re all about. They will take their lead from you and create a ceremony that is special and unique. Whatever, you choose the price is often reflected in the experience, quality, customer care, creativity and professionalism of the celebrant you choose.

Make sure you know what you’re getting before booking. Ask for a no-obligation video call and speak to a few suppliers. Ask what their working and booking process is, and their contingency for unforeseen circumstances. Check out their Instagram and website, and don’t be

PUT A RING ON IT

What are the latest wedding ring trends?

We have seen wedding ring trends change a lot over the years. People are putting a lot more thought into what their perfect wedding ring will look like. Gone are the traditional wide matching rings and instead couples are choosing what they love and are excited to wear for the rest of their lives.

Yellow gold has come back in a big way, and we’re seeing more feminine styles with small diamond accents that are encase around the engagement ring, often shaped with fans or floral designs.

For men, we’re seeing dark metals, often black with a hint of gold or silver running through. Metal trends are titanium, palladium and tungsten, with hard wearing and practical being the way forward for men choosing the perfect ring.

Selecting your ring can be overwhelming, so it’s always best to go into a store and try on as many as you can. Your jeweller will advise what looks best and help you find the perfect style that you will cherish for life.

afraid to ask for references.

Above all, budget is important but never forget that cheapest isn’t always best. You’re spending a lot of time, effort and money on your wedding day and your ceremony is the most important part, so take your time, do your research and get a marvellous celebrant to help make your day magical.

FLORAL DREAMS

I love flowers and want to incorporate them in both our venues; how can we save money by re-using them?

Re-purposing your ceremony flowers is a great way to stretch your budget. This is easier if your ceremony and reception are at the same venue, but if not, check with your florist to see what items can be moved. The most common and easiest way is to have a long and low arrangement on the signing table and then place this on the top table after the ceremony.

Another popular design choice is florals that line the aisle, which can easily be moved to the reception space, either in front of the top table or perhaps in front of a sign or backdrop.

You could also untie any pew ends and place them in small vases around your reception venue.

If you’re struggling to find a way to move items, I recommend prioritising your reception flowers. You spend much longer at your reception venue, so save your budget for where your guests will be wowed all day.

A TIMELESS WEDDING

How can we add a personal touch to our wedding ceremony?

Personalised ceremonies are gaining in popularity, with couples seeking alternatives to a traditional church or registrar service. The ceremony is the pinnacle of the day, yet can be the least thought about in terms of making it reflect your identities. I suggest you choose a celebrant who you can relate to and will develop something just for you.

A celebrant-led service weaves parts of your love story into the ceremony, which can contain humour as well as romance and bring relevance to the pieces of music you have chosen as the backtrack to the service.

Current trends include the use of rituals such as ring warming or candle ceremonies to honour relatives and friends that cannot be present. Little details like involving family and friends in rituals will make the day memorable for everyone who attends.

If you’re a couple who have a beloved pet that is part of your family, then involve them in the ceremony either as a spectator or as a ring bearer. If your beliefs are leaning more towards the mystic, then vows said within a crystal circle might be perfect for you.

A PIECE OF CAKE

My wife-to-be and I would love to incorporate our flowers into our sweet treats; do you have any ideas?

There are plenty of ways to decorate your sweet treats with flowers; here are a few to consider:

THE WRITE STUFF

How can we add a personal touch to our stationery?

Using handwritten calligraphy will add a personal touch for you and those attending your special day. Calligraphy is a traditional art form that offers elegance and individuality that is difficult to replicate via printing.

Begin by researching and looking at your stationer’s previous work, and have conversations with them to discuss what you want for your day, such as your theme or colours and any styles of writing that you like.

The on-the-day stationery can include name cards, table plans, table numbers, menus, thank you cards, a welcome board and much more. All of these can be made personal, from the type of paper used to the background and ink colour, the style of writing and decorative flourishes.

Fresh flowers – great if you want a more realistic and fancier look; this option is affordable but can be pricy depending on how many you need. Petals and whole flowers can be edible and vary in flavour, ranging from sweet or sour to spicy. You can also decorate most, if not every sweet treat with edible flowers, from small nibbles to drinks. However, be mindful of the flowers you choose as some are poisonous and not food safe!

Artificial flowers – if you want a keepsake from your cake after your wedding, artificial flowers may be your way to go.

Sugar paste flowers – these are edible, delicate and detailed decorations, however its more for show rather than taste and can be pricey depending on the size, quantity and detail required.

Fondant flowers – fondant icing can be sculpted into flowers, however the detail may be limited.

Buttercream flowers – finally, my personal favourite is buttercream. It tastes good and looks great, and you can apply as much or as little detail as you wish.

At the age of 13, her talent was recognised, and she was invited to attend and audition for a ballet company in London. April studied and danced for the Chou Chou Dance Company and whilst at the company, she performed in Coppélia, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker at acclaimed venues such as the Hackney Empire, National Theatre Covent Garden to name but a few. We offer brides and grooms great advice and services that seamlessly complement each other, from DJs to our new ‘catch the confetti machines’ and ‘360 Photo Booth’ with everything else in between.

“We can provide music and lighting for a small intimate wedding or TVs, dry ice, and confetti cannons for a large celebration. We offer a one-stop bespoke service that gives you as much or as little as your

HELEN BARLEY 01384 877 572 | www.helenbarley.co.uk

Helen Barley is an experienced harpist in Kinver who specialises in weddings. “I’m passionate about providing enchanting music to make a couple’s wedding day really special,” says Helen. “I love playing at weddings, and perform covers in many different genres of music, offering a wide range of styles. I have several harps of different sizes, but my favourite to play is my ultra-modern, black carbonfibre harp. It has an amazing sound, which carries well without amplification, even outside. It also has the advantage of being extremely lightweight and doesn’t need a cover or a trolley, so I can easily carry it in one hand to wherever you need it. I love playing it for garden or woodland weddings and am happy to play outdoors in any condition, including wind, rain, snow or sun. My amplification system is totally wireless, so it can be used anywhere, in or out, without the need for electrical sockets. My transmitters are also wireless, so there are no safety issues with trailing wires.

“For couples who need help with music choices, or would simply like to meet, see the harps, and hear me play before their wedding, I offer a free consultation at my home. I give my full commitment to providing the perfect atmosphere for your special day.

“My charges depend on the date, location and part of the wedding you wish me to play for. I don’t charge by the hour but by the event, as weddings often run late. I will continue until the end of the ceremony/drinks/meal. I work alone and only play one wedding a day, so it’s essential to book as soon as you have secured your date and venue to avoid disappointment.”

LUMOS STRING QUARTET

“Imagine your favourite movie without the soundtrack or road trips without the singalongs, those moments are still special however the inclusion of music elevates ‘special’ to ‘magical’, imbedding those events in our memories for life,” says Nick from Lumos String Quartet. “After having dated my now wife for a little over six months, it was a particular song that played on the radio that pushed me to the realisation that I loved this person. The song was Home by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and it has held a special place in my heart because it fully encapsulates how I feel about my wife even to this day. It was one of my very few non-negotiable that it be played at our wedding, and I will never forget how overcome with emotion I was when she walked down the aisle to a string quartet playing that song. I recount that personal story to illustrate how I came to realise the importance of that special touch when it comes to the inclusion of music on you special day. I don’t remember the flowers, what we had for dinner, the colour of my shoes, or the table

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

BAN THE BLOAT

Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day

One of the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding. There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.

CHEW PROPERLY

Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30

times to allow the gut to digest with ease.

EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS

Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.

START WITH SOMETHING BITTER

Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.

AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS

It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.

LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS

If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

SELF-CARE Soothing

Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day

74

It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.

That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.

Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.

The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.

For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.

There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.

“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”

After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.

Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.

Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.

I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.

For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.

At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.

“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”

Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.

I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.

As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”

Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.

Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.

As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”

Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best SUMMER ROMANCE

I need some ideas for a bridal hairstyle that can be worn up for my summer wedding – what do you suggest?

When it comes to selecting a bridal up do for a summer wedding, there are plenty of beautiful options to choose from. Here are some suggestions to help you find the perfect style:

Classic bun – a timeless and elegant choice that can be styled in a sleek, polished look or a more relaxed, messy style.

Braided up do – a romantic and feminine look that can be tailored to your personal style. A fishtail braid or a Dutch braid would be perfect for a summer wedding.

Twisted up do with flowers or hair accessories – a chic and sophisticated choice that can incorporate natural elements such as flowers or other hair accessories to add a whimsy touch.

Loose waves or curls – a soft and romantic option that can be styled as a half-up, half-down look or a full up do.

Remember to consult with a professional hairstylist who can recommend styles that will flatter your hair type, face shape and dress. Be sure to bring along pictures of styles that you love to help your hairstylist get an idea of what you’re looking for. Finally, don’t forget to schedule a trial run to ensure that you’re happy with the final result.

PURE ELEGANCE

What wedding dress styles and fabrics would you suggest for a May celebration?

Your wedding dress is the most self-expressive garment you will ever buy, so there are no rules regardless of the time of year that you’re get married. For a May wedding, like any other month, wearing something that you feel comfortable in and know that you could wear all day is the most important thing.

There are so many styles, shapes and materials, which allow brides to show off their individuality. An A-line skirt naturally allows more movement, as tthe gown is fitted at the waistline and has a flared skirt.

There is a variety of materials available, however, chiffon is a beautiful lightweight fabric which will allow you to move without any restrictions. This is one of my personal favourites, as it’s fun, playful and super romantic. It’s a lovely choice for a spring wedding as it adds a fairylike weightlessness but still allows you to have the traditional feel, without the weight like other materials such as Mikado.

Rebecca and the team at TDR Bridal www.tdr-bridal.co.uk

What style of dress will give me a timeless look for my manor house wedding?

A sophisticated A-line silhouette is elegant and flatters almost every body type. Look for a dress made from plain fabrics, like satin or Mikado, to create a fuller and more dramatic look.

Lace and tulle will create a softer and more feminine look, perfect if you envision tying the knot in a magical garden or by the tranquil river outside a manor house.

If your venue has a grand feature staircase, opting for a gown with a cathedral-length train will help you get some stunning, timeless wedding photos.

Avoid overly sexy bodice details and opt for more understated ones instead. For example, a semi-sheer bodice covered in lace appliqué is preferable to a plunging neckline that reveals lots of cleavage.

Last but not least, look for an ivory or white gown and keep certain colour accents to a minimum in order to achieve a sophisticated palette to work alongside your venue.

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

84

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

CITY ESCAPES 87

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Located on the banks of the picture-perfect River Thames in Surrey, just 10 minutes from Windsor, The

on Thames is a modern fourstar hotel with an award-winning spa offering.

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
