Thisyear is flying by, and if you’re courting down the days until your wedding, don’t worry, it will be here before you know it! I love this time of year, partly because I adore spring nuptials but mainly because of the new wedding dress collections. I got married last year and so I know how stressful finding your dream dress can be. I’m short, curvy and very self-conscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns. I had no idea of what style I wanted, a fishtail made me feel like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it and a ballgown swamped me, but luckily my bridal consultant suggested an A-line silhouette, which suited my figure. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available, make sure you listen to your consultant. They have years of experience and have helped brides of every shape and size find their dream gown, so they will know what looks good on you even if you don’t yourself. Lastly, don’t panic if you don’t have that overwhelming this is the one feeling, as I didn’t myself, just trust your gut and go for something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident. For inspiration, head over to our fashion pages, which are full of stunning on-trend styles, including ruffled tulle, satin layers, lace and subtle pleats.

If you’ve recently tied the knot or organised a shoot, you can submit it via email at melissa.cullen@county.wedding or www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

FASHION FORWARD

BRIDHA, a bridal boutique in Bolton, Greater Manchester, has officially reopened its doors. “We’ve been trading for more than 30 years; the last 17 years of which were run by my late father-in-law, who sadly passed away in November 2021 during the Covid 19 pandemic,” says Mez. “The store was previous known as Bliss Bridal Bolton, and as a family we decided to renovate the store and rebrand in honour of my late father-in-law. We wanted the new name to reflect this and therefore we incorporated his initials into the name (DHA). We came up with BRIDHA (pronounced BRIDE-UH), which combines the word bride and his initials. We had a launch evening in February, and courtesy of Maggie Sottero, we held a raffle and gave away a free dress to one very lucky bride.

“We are the UK’s first experience-led bridal store,” adds Mez. “We offer four different experiences for our brides: a luxury experience, an afternoon tea experience, a photography experience and a limousine experience. Our brides can expect nothing but the best from the moment they arrive into our store. We have our very own treats bar for our brides and bride tribe to enjoy with complimentary treats and drinks. All our brides are given exclusive membership to Club BRIDHA, an online hub which features a custom wedding manager, status updates on their dress, a section showcasing recommended vendors from the wedding industry who offer our brides a discount on their products and much more. Our brides are also given a luxury Jo Malone gift with the purchase of their dream dress.”

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

Emma Jane Events has a new home called The Lakes Wedding Hub. This hub is for storage but also acts as a showroom, office, and workshop, all under one roof.

“The workshop is where we design and make bespoke props for our couples,” says owner Emma Farrell. “We have also started holding our wedding consultations here as couples can see our décor in the showroom to help them with the vision for their special day. Couples can come here to learn all about recommended suppliers and venues in the Lake District all in one visit.

“We understand how lonely and overwhelming it can be to work from home on your own,” adds Emma. “So, we have opened our doors to other wedding suppliers to provide them with a friendly industry-specific hub to hot desk, hold consultations, and even host workshops. We’re excited for the hub to be part of the local community and a hive of activity for wedding suppliers.”

BEAUTIFULLY BOHO

Daughters of Bohème is a new bridal boutique in Carlisle, Cumbria. “My daughter, Georgina, was planning her wedding and had a strong vision of her perfect wedding dress,” says owner Kathreen Burns. “We could see similar styles in magazines and online but struggled to find a bridal shop in North Cumbria that offered boho, glamour wedding gowns. Her dad and I were already involved in the Lake District wedding sector through his generator business and local marquee suppliers. We had space at Flanders to create a bridalwear business that we knew would fill a niche gap in the market, and so Daughters of Bohème was born.

“Our emphasis at Daughters of Bohème is on great service with a private appointment approach, a relaxed setting and a wide range of wedding dresses in stock to try,” adds Kathreen. “Wedding gowns from Rembo Styling, Dando London, Marylise, Nicole Milano and RISH mean that there’s an emphasis on boho style but a variety of designs for the modern bride. Daughters of Bohème operates as an appointment-only bridal studio to give you the best experience possible. By booking ahead, we’ll make sure that you have a bridal stylist on hand and access to our beautiful designer gowns. You can try on as many as you like, as often as you like – we understand that it’s a big decision and could be hard to choose, so we want you to be able to relax and take your time.”

“After photographing a few styled shoots, I have decided to offer a new elopement package,” adds Sarah. “This includes a pre-consultation, two hours in the Lake District and all images on a wooden USB stick priced at £360. THE BEAUTY OF NATURE

The Yan in the Lake District is launching The Smithy – an idyllic lakeland cottage for two that’s perfect for a minimoon or a pre-wedding getaway.

This detached lakeland stone cottage on The Yan’s beautiful former 17th century farm site at the foot of the fells, is just outside the picture-perfect Grasmere village. A peaceful retreat for two, it can be fully serviced with breakfasts and dinners from The Yan, either in the chic bistro or delivered via ‘room service’ to the cottage door.

The Smithy has been lovingly converted and offers high ceilings, an open-plan living, kitchen and dining space with a wood-burning stove, a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a contemporary bathroom furnished with local goodies. The former blacksmith’s residence is all on one level, with stunning views towards Helm Crag and Steel Fell on one side, plus French doors which open out onto a private seating area overlooking Grasmere Village, Loughrigg and Silver Howe. It has its own enclosed south-facing garden too, complete with a barbeque.

The Yan opened in July 2019 and has fast gained a reputation as one of the best places to eat in the Lakes, with everything pickled, preserved, smoked, cooked and baked in-house by executive chef Will Manley and his team. Named after the word for ‘one’ in Cumbrian dialect, The Yan has a rustic bistro, seven en suite bedrooms, four Lakeland cottages and two glamping pods, providing guests with a wholesome welcome, hearty food and stylish interiors, all at the foot of the fells.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

Big Bear’s BBQ, a mobile catering company, has recently invested in a second custom-built trailer allowing the team to offer a mixture of British and American barbecue foods.

“We’ve been building our business for the past three years,” says owners Jill and Hugh. “We started in our custom-built wood-fired pizza trailer and soon found ourselves being asked to provide catering for private events and weddings. This soon became an area we enjoyed exploring, and have since made many long-lasting customers, friends and contacts. We have built our business by trying to provide high-quality food at an affordable level by making each event we cater for bespoke and as personalised as we can. We have recently found our enquiries have come from much further afield, and as we are mobile, we have enjoyed visiting many locations all over the North West. The second trailer has always been part of our expansion plan from the very start, and after a few small test events, our feedback has only encouraged us to believe we made the right decision! We have several packages available to those who might be looking to find the right caterer for their special day, and we look forward to receiving any enquiries and working alongside those who are planning ahead; we still have dates available for this year and welcome any more for the future.”

THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

April from Wed in the Wilderness is a wedding photographer based in Greater Manchester. “I’m an adventurer at heart and love to visit and experience new places,” says April. “I shoot intimate weddings and elopements in the Peak District as well as Cheshire, the Lake District, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and beyond. My love for photography was sparked at an early age when I used to have a 35mm Teletubbies camera to take photos of all my family members; I’ve never been without a camera since. I think of photography as a story with each picture being the pages of your own book. This is why I love photographing weddings and elopements as each story is unique. I’m constantly inspired by each couples stories and personalities. For me, it’s

so important for you to be as comfortable as possible and capture those natural and fun moments. For many of you the idea of a whole day’s worth of photographs may seem daunting, but I want you to know that I will be with you every step of the way, cheering you on and celebrating with you.”

Wed in the Wilderness is offering Your North West Wedding readers a personalised, rustic wooden photo print and a USB box as a complimentary keepsake worth £150 with every wedding package booked before the end of May 2023. To claim this wonderful offer, email april@wedinthewilderness.com and mention the magazine.

MOVE THE

right

Steve and Rob hit it off right away, and years later, they tied the knot at Broadoaks Country House

Images courtesy of Jaye-Peg Photography

Steve

and Rob met in 2001 when Steve’s tenancy was coming to an end, and he was looking for another house to rent. “I had a house that I had just moved out of and was looking to rent out,” says Rob. “Steve’s viewing lasted longer than I expected, as it turned into quite a long conversation. It just seemed to be a natural fit, as we had lots of common ground. A couple of hours after the house viewing, I messaged Steve and asked him to go for a drink. He ended up taking the house, and it wasn’t long after that that I ended up moving back in.”

The happy couple had been engaged a few times but never officially announced it. “Over the years, one or other of us has proposed on a few occasions,” shares Rob. “It had always been something that we had spoken about and agreed to do, but we had never followed through on any of the arrangements. When

we were younger, we used to have lots of clubbing nights out around the UK, and one of the places we used to go back to was Blackpool. We were taking a trip there in April 2022, and as the alcohol flowed, we spoke about getting married and regretting that we’d never actually done it. We said that we should and follow through on it this time. We told our families the next day, and by lunchtime we had agreed that we wouldn’t wait too long before getting married. We talked about places that we’d visited and thought it would be nice to get married somewhere that meant a lot to us, that we could make memorable due to the wedding, and always keep as a special place that we could return to and continue to visit, and so we settled on the Lake District.”

Here Rob shares some of his favourite moments from their big day...

25 REAL WEDDINGS

I’m a qualified pilot and wanted to fly in by helicopter, so we were looking for a venue that had space to land. There were several possibilities that met our wider criteria. We wanted to be close to Lake Windermere, but not on the lake itself, as we wanted somewhere a little more exclusive that was not going to be overlooked. We also wanted somewhere that had space for family to stay, and it had to be dog friendly. We narrowed it down to three venues, but it was our visit to Broadoaks Country House, and our conversation with the team that persuaded us that it was the right venue for us. Sadly, the weather was not good enough to be able to fly in on the day, but that meant that there were no limits on how much alcohol could be drunk!

Steve and I chose a three-tiered cake made with locally-sourced ingredients. We had to cater for lots of dietary requirements, so we decided to go for three different flavours. Kelly from Wren Cake Design worked the flowers into the design and came up with a wonderful icing pattern, leaving the cake mainly white, but incorporating our chosen colours.

We decided early on that we didn’t want anything too heavily themed. We wanted to keep things simple, and show that there is little difference between same sex and ‘traditional’ weddings. We have both lost our fathers and people close to us, so we wanted to make sure that those who were no longer with us were represented on the day through the decorations, colours and flowers.

We chose a blossom arch from Allure Venue Styling that we used at the front of the ceremony and later behind the top table for the wedding breakfast.

Our centrepieces were glass bowls filled with orange blooms. We opted for dahlias and birds of paradise, which were our fathers’ favourite flowers.

Broadoaks Country House did all the catering on the day. The four-course wedding breakfast was a local twist on French cuisine, and for those guests that still wanted more, there was pizza and chips in the evening, plus wedding cake. Allure Venue Styling put together a sweet cart, which was made up of blue and orange sweets from our childhood.

26

I wanted us to wear matching suits; we looked at traditional options and ‘standard’ suits in various colours, but nothing jumped out. We wanted something special that would be unique and was not something that would be worn every day, or that anyone else was likely to turn up in. Eventually, we found Aristocracy London Ltd, who produce limited edition pieces, and we managed to get something special. We chose an angel blue three-piece Nehru suit with a textured jacket and waistcoat, fastened with a chain.

As we had such a wide circle of close friends, we didn’t want to choose one over another for the purposes of a wedding party. We also wanted it to be inclusive without it being thought that we were prioritising some guests over others, so in the end, we chose Steve’s two nephews to be the ring bearers, and they also wore navy suits with burnt orange satin ties.

We decided that we didn’t want some guests to only be invited for part of the day, so all invitations were for the whole day. We were also aware that people would have to travel to the Lake District, so we made sure that there was time for people to check into hotels, walk dogs, and have a little time to themselves. Our focus was to keep them fed and watered and to make sure that they felt involved.

After 20 years together, there were no nerves. It felt natural and something long overdue. When we started planning, we were going to have a small wedding and considered eloping but decided that we should just invite immediate family. Over the course of a few weeks, the numbers grew until it reached 100. We still wanted the closeness of immediate family, so we arranged for mothers and siblings to come to the Lake District a day earlier to have dinner, drinks and spa treatments.

We hired a DJ for the evening, as well as a selfie frame and photo booth. We also used the lawn at Broadoaks Country House for games for the children. We each bought a pocket watch for the other as a gift, and had cufflinks specially engraved.
27 REAL WEDDINGS

As Steve’s nephews had been ring bearers, we asked my nephew to give a reading taken from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin during the ceremony.

Obviously being in the Lake District, Lake Windermere was chosen as a backdrop for some of the photos, but Jaye, our photographer, also came up with some locations that were not so typical to make things special. After having so many people around at the ceremony, it was nice to have some time just the two of us.

At the wedding breakfast, we both made speeches and toasts to other people, and so there was no one to make a toast to the grooms. Steve’s brother stood up and did that to ensure there was a toast for us as well.

The wedding had been planned to be ethical, as we wanted to show that it could be done without affecting the environment. We focused on being carbon neutral and offsetting the carbon generated by arranging for trees to be planted in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.

We provided wildflower seeds as part of our favours so that people could plant them to remember our day, but to also help with attracting butterflies and bees. We have already received lots of comments about how lovely they look and how people have enjoyed planting them as a family activity. We also wanted to offset the amount of meat that was consumed at the wedding breakfast, so we arranged to rescue 20 battery chickens and a cow that had been destined for slaughter to be sent to a city farm.

For our honeymoon, went to the Seychelles and stayed in Beau Vallon. We had always had the Seychelles on our bucket list, so it seemed the perfect time to visit. We had a suite right next to Mare Anglaise beach and got to enjoy the Indian ocean every day, with jet skiing, parasailing and island hopping.

NIGHT AWAY Rock the

Kate and Stuart opted for an alternative-themed wedding at Salford Lads Club and Buile Hill Park Hall

Kateand Stuart met through a mutual friend who organised charity gigs. “We had both recently become single, so our friend suggested that we meet for a coffee,” says Kate. “Our first date was in August 2015 in Manchester. We had similar interests and hit it off right away. Stuart lived in Nottingham at the time and moved to Manchester six months into our relationship to live with me.”

Stuart proposed during lockdown. “We had talked about getting married at some point, but the proposal came as a total surprise,” shares the bride. “He proposed with a Haribo ring, as no jewellery shops were open because of the pandemic.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The happy couple chose to have their ceremony at Salford Lads Club. “We’re both fans of The Smiths and loved the iconic venue because of its rich history,” explains Kate. “For our reception, we booked Buile Hill Park Hall as it isn’t too far from Salford Lads Club, and it has a stage and a lovely outdoor space.”

Kate and Stuart gave their guests Haribo sweets as favours to represent Stuart’s proposal during lockdown.

“We want to keep the wedding quite casual, so instead of a traditional seating plan, we asked our guests to sit where they liked,” recalls the bride. “We decorated the tables with sugar skull luminaries from Craft Harmony. For the flowers, we opted for red roses as they’re my favourites and pale white and blue blooms for my nieces; the eldest is a Manchester City Women’s fan and would only carry flowers if they were the club’s colours.

“Our cake was made by our good friend Amy,” adds Kate. “We opted for a leopard print and black design with white chocolate sugar skulls on top and fondant icing roses. It was three-tiered with Victoria sponge on the bottom, chocolate in the middle and carrot cake on the top.”

For their food, the couple opted for a pizza van from Fratelli’s and an ice cream van provided by Lucia’s Ice Cream in the evening.

“We hired a vintage Fiat 500 to take me from our house to Salford Lads Club,” reveals Kate. “The car also took us from the ceremony to the reception venue. Our guests were picked up by a red, vintage double-decker bus from RM Buses Limited and transported to Buile Hill Park Hall.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I wore an ivory 1950s-style dress from The Pretty Dress Company,” says the bride. “I chose it because I loved the style. I accessorised with leopard print shoes, red roses and rockabilly-style jewellery from Dolly Cool. I also had a leopard print pashmina in case it got cold and I used a vintage, ivory jewelled bag that I have had for years.”

Stuart opted for a red mod suit, Dr. Martens, a black and yellow striped tie, yellow tartan socks and a yellow pocket square from Mod Clothin Crown Jester.

“My bridesmaids chose navy blue gowns,” shares Kate. “My sisters wore cocktail-style dresses that they picked themselves and my nieces chose outfits that reflected their personalities. Ruby is very sporty and doesn’t like wearing dresses, so she opted for a navy jumpsuit and white trainers and Scarlett likes frilly dresses and accessories so she wanted a navy blue dress, silver sparkly shoes and a matching handbag.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We hired a rockabilly band called El-camino,” explains Kate. “They are friends of ours and Glenn, the double bass player is also my tattoo artist. They went down well with guests of all ages and did covers. Stuart also created a Spotify playlist of all of our favourite songs, which we played using our tablet and through the PA system.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“The day was perfect,” recalls the bride. “It reflected who we are as people and all of our suppliers were brilliant. Our pizza van stepped in at the last minute, as our original pizza van cancelled. We loved the fact that several of our suppliers were friends – the band, photographer, the person who made the cake. The staff at both venues were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. The wedding planner at Salford Lads Club was brilliant. Some lads got on our vintage bus when it arrived and she soon told them to get off! There is a boxing gym at the venue which was a great place for photos, and one of our friends got rope burn on her hands after doing a somersault out of the boxing ring!

“Stuart and I have both been married before, so we wanted a chilled out day that reflected who we are as people and we felt that we had that,” adds Kate. “After I had had my hair and make-up done and got in my dress, Verna, my next-door neighbour brought me some chips round and there is a great photo of me eating chips in my wedding dress.”

HONEYMOON

“We had a mini-moon straight after the wedding to Naples, which was amazing,” reveals the bride. “We went straight to the airport from Kimpton Clocktower Hotel where we stayed for two nights after the wedding.”

sweethearts

Jenna and Rob first met when they were just 14, and after 18 years together, they tied the knot at Browsholme Hall and The Tithe Barn

Images courtesy of Glimmering Sparkle Weddings

Jenna and Rob met 20 years ago when they were just 14. “We were at a social club and got chatting about a bracelet he had on that I really liked,” says Jenna. “He said I could borrow it, and I had it for two years until we met again at his cousin’s 18th birthday party. As soon as I saw him, I knew straight away I wanted to be with him. I rung him several times that night asking to meet up again. Rob took me out on our first date, and almost 18 years and two children later, we’re still together.” Rob popped the question on Christmas Day. “He hung my engagement ring on the Christmas tree at home,” shares the bride. “I took it off the tree, and our daughters asked: ‘will you marry dad?’, to which I, of course, said yes!”

Here Jenna shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

37 REAL WEDDINGS

Rob used to go shooting at Browsholme Hall and The Tithe Barn many years ago, so when he mentioned the venue, I looked it up and we decided to go to an open day they were having. As soon as I saw it, I knew straight away that it was the place I was going to get married, and we booked it practically the same day. It’s a stunning venue, and it suited our style perfectly.

We opted for a grey colour scheme and decorated the space with light-up letters from Invite & Light.

Our favours were bottles of home-brewed sloe gin, which we also used as place names.

The table plan display created a lot of attention from our guests; it included feathers, a flat cap and shot gun cartridges.

We know Alex from Flowers & Feathers well as she makes our Christmas wreaths, so we asked her to use feathers and shotgun cartridges in her flowers to go with our theme. We also had lots of greenery, gypsophila and roses.

Jo from Cake Occasions made our brilliant cake; the bottom tier was chocolate, the middle was vanilla sponge and the top was sticky toffee pudding. It looked like a log slice at the bottom and the top two tiers were a naked, white effect. It had a heart carved into the design to represent when Rob carved ‘R Heart J Forever’ when we first met.

38

I knew I wanted to get my dress from Ava Rose Hamilton as I used to watch Say Yes To The Dress all the time with Gok Wan. I had an image in my head of the style that I wanted and Zoe at Ava Rose Hamilton found my perfect dress. I accessorised with a necklace, bracelet and earring set that Rob bought me.

We had a saxophone player from Dancefloor Couture LTD perform as I walked down the aisle and during the drinks reception, which our guests loved. The company also provided a DJ for the evening entertainment.

I was calm all morning until I was ready to walk down the aisle then I got the shakes; I was so excited but a nervous wreck. As soon as we were married, we both felt amazing.

Rob and I hired a photo booth from Reflections Entertainment, which was a huge hit with our friends and family as they got instant prints and copies sent straight to their phones. My six bridesmaids wore Little Mistress grey gowns, and the two flowergirls chose beautiful dresses from Debenhams.
REAL WEDDINGS 39
Rob and the groomsmen wore House of Cavani suits with personalised pocket watches.

I remember being stood just outside the room where our ceremony was taking place and the venue looked surreal; it was out of this world and even more amazing than I had ever imagined. As I walked in, I saw Rob and couldn’t take my eyes off him, I didn’t really look at any of our guests at that moment.

The best man’s speech was very funny and had our guests in stiches; he managed to tell our whole 18 years of being together in a poem. Some very drunk guests made it hilarious; the atmosphere of the whole day was just perfect, nothing but laughs and happy people.

All our suppliers went above and beyond; I’m so pleased with our photos, the flowers were fantastic, and the cake and decorations couldn’t have been more perfect. The saxophone made it extra special for me, and getting to marry my best friend was the most unreal feeling.

For our honeymoon, we went to Paphos in Cyprus in a beautiful adult-only hotel for five days. Rob had planned this as a surprise and told me during his speech; I had no idea as he only booked it on the morning of our wedding. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed being together.

Local photographers showcase their favourite images

Nowthat weddings are back in full swing, we wanted to celebrate with a feature full of wonderful images from some of the area’s best photographers.

“During the bridal preparations, the bride peeped through the curtains of her dressing room to see the guests greeting the groom just before the wedding ceremony. I love this image because she was so excited to see everyone outside and what they were wearing, and nobody from outside noticed her looking. It was such a memorable moment.” – Marina from Marina Walker Photo.

“This image of Amy and Rob makes me smile; they had a bit of a joke and a laugh together while we were taking photos, and it just sums up their wedding day for me.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

“This is one of my favourite because the smile between them is so genuine due to the fun we were having whilst trying to get creative with the veil – capturing a wonderfully aesthetic image which is also genuine.” – Tom from Tom Benson Photography.

“I captured this shot of Kellie and Brian as the sun was setting. We always study the area with hopes that the couple might wish to disappear for a short while, which was the case here, as they went with us on a short drive to a nearby spot for a romantic sunset shoot.”

– Kat and Greg from Glimmering Sparkle Weddings.

“The confetti shot has to be one of my favourites to capture at any wedding, and the joy here in the bride’s face and the way her new husband is looking at her with so much pride just makes it a perfect wedding photograph.” – Helen from Honey Bee Photography.

Sometimes I find the men’s group photographs can get a bit awkward, so if you have ideas or just want to have a good natter and see what happens, go for it. This particular photo ended up being so much fun to shoot, and I had tears in my eyes from laughing so much!” – Helen from Honey Bee Photography.

“The ring wouldn’t go on properly as the groom was a bit warm which could make for an awkward situation or in Tom and Pippa’s case lots of laughs from everyone.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

“This couple had a winter wedding and would have loved for it to snow for some photos, but they had a back-up plan and hired a snow machine. This ended up being very useful as it didn’t snow, but we turned it on during the couple shots and were absolutely blasted with wet, fake snow, but it was definitely worth it!” – Marina from Marina Walker Photo.

Lancashire-based photographer Laura Duggleby organised this styled shoot at The Wellbeing Farm. She tells us: “I have wanted to be part of a winter wonderland shoot for a while, and as wedding season was coming to a close, I started thinking about creating a moodboard for this shoot. I loved the snow and ice theme with just a hint of baby blue to lift the other tones. The team worked together on a previous shoot and so I contacted them again, adding in Tinglz Event Decoration Hire, Bridgewater Menswear and The Wellbeing Farm. I shared the moodboard with everyone and let them use their creativity to bring it together.”

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

PICTURE PERFECT

I’m nervous in front of the camera and was wondering if booking a pre-wedding shoot would help, what are the benefits?

A pre-wedding shoot is a great idea, especially if you’re feeling nervous about being photographed. It will give you an idea of how your shoot will go on your wedding day, but as it’s usually an hour-long session you can

take your time, relax and hopefully have fun.

The other advantage is you’ll have photos to use on your invitations, around your venue and on social media.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS

We’re having a relaxed wedding; how can we reflect this in our flowers?

Flowers are a great way to reflect how you want your wedding day to feel. If you want a relaxed and natural day, you can do this by using seasonal and wild flowers in simple, organic arrangements for a more free-flowing and natural appearance rather than the traditional structured look.

Use the venue’s features to create a natural flow with the flowers. For example, if you’re having a barn wedding, a milk churn filled with wild flowers wouldn’t look out of place. Likewise if your venue is a country house, placing flowers on the fireplace will give a I’ve always been here look.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your flowers, speak to your florist. They have lots of experience and will be able to make suggestions and help with decisions.

www.mickcookson.com EXPERT ADVICE 55

WOW THE CROWDS

My wife-to-be and I are thinking of hiring a band, but we’re a bit worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. How can we make the right decision?

Finding the perfect wedding entertainment can be a daunting task, especially as a professional band will be booked up for private events so it will be unlikely you’ll get to go to watch them live. However, lots of bands now have social media profiles. A high-quality band will always have videos and photos on their Instagram, Facebook or TikTok profiles from recent weddings, so you can instantly see if the band is the right fit for you.

For our couples, we always like to arrange a chat over Zoom, on the phone or in person. This way, we can discuss your ideas on a more personal level. Ask your band if this is something they can provide to put your mind at ease.

Recommendations from venues, friends, suppliers and family members are always a great place to start. It’s also worth reading through reviews before making a decision.

THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

What should we take into consideration before booking a photographer?

When planning the wedding of your dreams, one of the most important aspects to get right is the photography. Having confidence in your photographer and building a rapport with them is important. Before booking consider the following:

Do your homework – just as with any other vendor, you need to do your research and find a photographer whose style aligns with yours. Check out their portfolio, read the reviews, and schedule a meeting to ensure you two are a perfect match. After all, your photographer will be with you all day, so you want to make sure you trust and get along with them.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

My wife-to-be and I are looking for entertainment that will keep our guests happy throughout the day, do you have any suggestions?

A wedding reception will undoubtedly have slower moments such as while people are waiting for food, between the toasts, the room turn around or while the wedding party head off for photos. You need to think of a blend of activities that complement each other to keep your guests entertained. There are lots of ideas to choose from, but a magician really takes the cake. A magical host/compère can make a big impact on your guests and goes a long way to make the big day even more magical.

On the wedding day, a lot of different social groups, families and friends with different dynamics are being brought together, sometimes for the first time. While this is a great opportunity to get to know people, it can often lead to some lull moments. The great thing about a wedding magician is that they’ll mingle with your guests, help break the ice and alleviate some of that tension and distract from awkward moments.

www.paulswiftphotography.com

Set a budget and stick to it – photography can be one of the most expensive aspects of a wedding, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. Be clear on the packages and what they include so you know exactly what you’re getting for your money.

Don’t let a single moment slip away – your wedding day will fly by, so make sure to plan for enough photography time. Work with your photographer to create a timeline that allows for all the important moments to be captured, from getting ready to the first dance. Don’t forget to allocate some time for portraits, group shots, and candid moments.

Why two is sometimes better than one – a second shooter

can provide a different perspective and capture moments you might miss. This is especially important if you have a large wedding party or are getting married in a big venue. Having a second shooter can also ensure that all the important moments are captured, even if one photographer is occupied with something else.

Expertise – your experienced photographer will know what works best in terms of lighting, angles and poses. So, be open to their suggestions and trust their expertise. After all, they want you to have the best possible photos, just as much as you do.

A MOMENT in time

Planning an intimate celebration? We’ve put together a how-to guide with all the latest advice and trends

AS PRETTY AS A FLOWER

A smaller wedding with fewer guests can be a great way to reduce expenditure and free up money to spend exactly where you want too. Here are some top tips to consider when planning your wedding flowers: How do I choose a florist? Look at the work of florists local to your venue. By staying local, you’ll keep delivery costs to a minimum.

When do I book my florist? Ideally you should book 12 months before your wedding date. As with any wedding vendor, once you’ve found a company you like, a booking fee will usually save your date. If your wedding isn’t for another year or two, you can still secure your chosen florist; just don’t expect a full quote as soon as you book.

Should I have a Pinterest board? Yes, absolutely. A selection of pictures of flowers that you like is very informative; it can help you and your florist pick out styles, colours, and flower varieties.

I don’t want to spend lots, is that okay? If you want to keep everything on budget, then be honest with your supplier from the start. Your florist can help guide you and if you’re flexible on designs and flower varieties, they can suggest the best flowers for your budget.

Do I have to meet with my florist? Personally, I feel everyone should experience a bespoke design service. I like to get to know my clients, and face-to-face meetings are an excellent way to do this. In a meeting, I can learn so much more about a couple and sketch as we chat, showing how your bouquet will best accentuate your chosen dress or outfit; it’s a chance to offer ideas you may never have considered.

What price will my bouquet be? Many professional florists cannot give exact quotes years in advance. At the moment predicting price changes within the next six month is tricky! So, it’s important to select a florist who’s style you like and trust.

What designs should I have? If you’ve chosen to get married in a smaller venue, speak to your venue coordinator and florist about what will fit in the space. If it’s already a very ornate room, you possibly won’t need lots of flowers and extra accessories. Your florist will be able to advise the colours and designs to complement the features of your beautiful setting. Can I move all the designs from the ceremony area to the wedding breakfast? I see this being promoted a lot, and it’s an

DREAMY DÉCOR

Your nuptials should be all about you, and that should be reflected in every aspect of your design, no matter the size of your wedding. Every choice should encompass your personality and style, and it’s even easier to achieve this with an intimate wedding. Read my top tips for creating a space where your guests will feel comfortable and want to take photos with you in your beautifully decorated venue:

Start with deciding on your décor budget. This will help you and your stylist choose pieces and designs that fit within your budget, no matter if it’s big or small, you just need to have a number in mind when you start planning your wedding.

To create an impression on your guests you’ll need clever use of décor pieces, arrangements, styling and lighting. You want your venue to be an immersive and visually appealing space that transports your guests into your wedding world.

Creating a cohesive wedding theme and design that reflects you and your partner’s personalities is the key to creating a unique wedding. Let your wedding stylist guide you through the process of selecting a theme

excellent way to save money. For instance, a design for your ceremony table can easily become your top-table design. However, some designs are not meant to be moved! If they must be moved, then expect to pay extra as they may have to be redesigned or re-engineered in some way to ensure stability whilst moving and repositioning. Speak to your florist to be clear about who is moving it and when. You don’t want the ushers ending up with vases full of water tipped down their suits!

or vibe and creating a space that is truly reflective of who you are and how you want to celebrate your marriage. With a smaller space and fewer guests, you can personalise every detail in your venue; from hand-embroidered napkins and designer candles to statement floral centrepieces, these details will make your wedding stand out.

To ensure you work with a stylist that understands your vision, you’re going to need to book early. Book your wedding stylist anywhere from 12 to 18 months before your wedding date. This will allow time for venue visits together, to order bespoke décor and have design meetings.

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

Planning a wedding can be a daunting task, but hiring a wedding planner can alleviate the stress and ensure that your special day runs smoothly. If you’re considering hiring a wedding planner, there are several factors to keep in mind:

To start, it’s important to research and find someone who matches your style and budget. Look for a company with experience planning weddings similar to yours and positive reviews from previous clients.

Before booking, consider your vision, budget, and timeline. Having a clear idea of what you want for your big day, including the style, theme, and overall atmosphere, is crucial. Establishing a budget and communicating it to your planner will help you stay on track financially. Finally, make sure you have a timeline for your wedding and share it with your planner to ensure that everything is completed on time.

As you narrow down your list of potential planners, ask questions to determine if they’re the right fit for you. Ask about their availability on your date, their credentials and experience, and how they handle unforeseen issues on the day of the wedding.

Ideally, you should reach out to a wedding planner at least a year in

advance of your wedding to allow enough time for planning. However, if you have a shorter timeline, don’t worry – many wedding planners can manage shorter planning schedules.

By hiring a wedding planner, you can ensure that your dream intimate wedding becomes a reality.

WOW YOUR GUESTS

As a full-time, award-winning, professional wedding magician, I regularly meet with couples anxious about their wedding day entertainment, and I know how they feel, I felt the same way myself over the years helping to plan weddings and other events. At intimate weddings, it’s vital to ensure that the entertainment matches the intimacy. A professional wedding magician can deliver exactly that, breaking the ice and getting people to integrate, smile and laugh.

When is the best time to book? Once you have your date, venue and an estimate of people attending.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

A benefit of lower guest numbers is having the potential to create a personal experience for everyone. Take the opportunity to create special touches such as:

Welcome bags or notes in the bedrooms.

Messages or memories on the reverse of place cards or at each place setting.

Video interviews/moments with each guest.

Full weekend plans such as having a meal together.

Organise group activities like challenges, walks or workshops. Be careful not to create stress and keep everything manageable and worthwhile. Pass on specific tasks to key people, so you can share the workload.

You will have the chance to chat with each guest in a small-scale event, and having personal touches may help people mingle and keep the flow going even if they don’t know each other that well.

Annabel from Weddings by Annabel

www.weddingsbyannabel.co.uk

Is the magician suitable, friendly and on your wavelength? Will they fit in with your guests? Have they taken the trouble to talk with you about what you want and shown a genuine interest, or have they just given a price based on time and venue?

What are their contingencies if there’s a delay? For instance, I book by the event, not the hour.

Can they offer something more than walkabout and table magic? To most couples with a smaller, intimate wedding, the cost of a professional may seem high, but think of the benefits: the enjoyment of their guests, the laughter, smiles, the awesome photographs and of course the longterm memories.

YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY

A wedding should be about celebrating with your nearest and dearest; for some that number is a lot, and others not so much. Either way, an intimate wedding can still be epic. Here are some of the things you can expect when planning a smaller wedding:

Your budget: The price per head may be the same, but the number will likely make a difference to the overall cost – depending on your choices, of course. If you have a set budget, you may find that it goes further or that you can splurge on some of things if the number was tripled that you simply couldn’t.

Your venue: If you have fallen in love with a venue which can host more guests than on your list, speak to the venue to see how they can help you create that intimate feeling. You may be able to get married in one area and have your reception in another or partition some of the room off.

Your reception: Worried the atmosphere maybe a bit flat as there are less guests? Looking for something more casual to entertain everyone in the evening? You could create pockets of entertainment throughout the day for you and your guests to enjoy whilst you all spend quality time together. You may feel a DJ is a bit overbearing for your numbers, but just because there are less of you doesn’t mean that the party goes out the window.

Your seating plan: Smaller numbers may mean that you can sit everyone together on one continuous table. You could sit in the middle and create the effect of the top table should you wish to still incorporate some of the traditional seating arrangements. Alternatively, you could still go for round tables, just not with as many people per table.

Your décor: Always enhance what beauty the venue offers, you chose the space for various reasons, and one of those is probably what it looks like! Maximise what features are on offer to you. Do you need chair décor? What style of centrepieces do you need? If you are sat on one table, a long and low arrangement with lots of detail through the middle will work well; perhaps throw in some tall centrepieces for added drama. If you have any décor from your ceremony, reposition it throughout the venue, so nothing goes to waste. Having a focal point at any wedding is a good idea, so think about where that would work.

Your day your way: Ultimately, your wedding should reflect you as a couple and be 24 hours of celebrating two sides coming together. It’s easy to get caught in wedding drama and feel overwhelmed; but plenty of research is key to a happy wedding.

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE

Here are some top tips from a luxury wedding planner to make sure you have the most magical wedding day:

Consider your guests’ experience: Your wedding day is an opportunity for your guests to enjoy themselves and be part of something special, so you want to make sure they are entertained throughout the day, offered plenty of comfortable seating, and their glasses are always full.

Choose a venue you love: Choosing the right venue is arguably more important when planning an intimate wedding, as you will be in that space for most of the day. You want to find the right size venue that will look full even with a smaller guest list.

Keep your guest list small: If you want to keep your wedding intimate, then you need to be ruthless when it comes to choosing who is invited. You need to decide which family members and friends mean the most to you and who you want to share your special day with. Consider not inviting children or partners if they aren’t married.

Splurge on the menu: If you’re like me, food is an important part of the wedding experience for you as a couple as well as your guests. If you have a particular cuisine that you both enjoy, hire a specialist to cater for your wedding.

Booking a good photographer: The photographer is one of the most important things you can invest in for your wedding. Memories are wonderful, but it’s hard to share them sometimes, whereas a photo is worth a thousand words. Getting to show your extended family photos from your wedding is precious, so investing in a professional photographer that you can trust is a must-have for your intimate wedding.

Personalise your décor: Use your décor to transform your wedding venue into a space that represents you as a couple. Include monogrammed details, handcrafted menus and bespoke wedding favours. Every detail is seen more clearly with fewer guests in the space, so be as creative as you like with your wedding design.

Book a planner: Although it is an intimate wedding, enlisting a wedding planner will be a great benefit to you. The earlier you can hire a planner for your wedding the better.

Intimate weddings are just as fun and memorable as larger weddings; there’s no right or wrong way to plan your wedding, but hopefully these top tips have offered some advice when it comes to deciding where to allocate your wedding budget to ensure you get your dream wedding day.

Q&AFashion & Beauty

Experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best JEWEL OF THE AISLE

I’m worried my dress is too plain for my colourful wedding; how can I add some fun through my accessories?

You can inject some colour into your wedding style in a fun and modern way with a fabulous pair of bright heels; there are some amazing styles and shades available that will give your look that extra pop. You could pair them with a belt or sash in the same colour or add a wrap or shawl.

Hair accessories are another simple way of introducing colour into your day. These can be paired with stunning jewellery to add fun in a classy way. Veils are now also available in a multitude of hues, so if you’re brave enough, go for it!

Those of you looking for something a little more subtle can introduce colour through your jewellery. Not all bridal jewellery has to be plain diamantes or pearls; opt for a striking sapphire blue or maybe some pink and green contrasting statement earrings to create that wow factor.

A PASSION FOR FASHION

I’m looking for an elegant dress that’s easy to dance the night away in. Do you have any suggestions?

A lightweight A-line or fit-and-flare dress would be the perfect way to achieve an elegant look whilst allowing you to feel unrestricted during the evening.

Minimalist trains are also key, and avoid long, restrictive sleeves unless they are detachable.

A slit is a timeless classic and will make your dress more breathable. Remember, being elegant doesn’t mean you can’t also be a fun bride. Whatever you choose, you will look beautiful.

PURE ELEGANCE

What’s a classic bridal look that I’ll love in my photos for years to come?

The best piece of advice I can give is to stay true to yourself when it comes to choosing a dress, your hair and make-up. If you’re a minimal type of girl, you may regret going for a full on glam look and vice versa. Your artist will create a style using shades to suit your eye colour and skintone to make your features pop.

The same goes with your hair, do what feels right for you. If you usually wear your hair down or up, go for a more enhanced version so when you look back at your images you won’t feel like you’re staring at a stranger.

It’s easy to jump on fashion trends, but a classic bridal look is blended and seamless without harsh lines; you want to see your beautiful face before you see the make-up, complemented with a hairstyle that suits your face shape.

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS

This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.

The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:

“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.

This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

92

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Located on the banks of the picture-perfect River Thames in Surrey, just 10 minutes from Windsor, The

on Thames is a modern fourstar hotel with an award-winning spa offering.

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
