AsI write the nation is excitedly anticipating the coronation of King Charles III. Whether you’re a royalist, or merely delighted at the prospect of an extra bank holiday, there’ll be something to celebrate. At least for the foreseeable future, May will be the month we commemorate the King’s jubilees, so we’re ready to party. Although you may be royaled-out by the time you read this, I always think of our readers as queens and kings, princesses and princes, and believe you all deserve the royal treatment on your big day, so why not consider adding a regal edge to your nuptials?

Jewel-toned colour palettes are certainly seeing a surge in popularity, thanks to their opulent, rich hues; and shades such as purple and red have long been associated with royalty. When it comes to dining, think banqueting tables bedecked in gold cutlery and crystal, with tall candelabra and centrepieces. Of course, add this styling to a stately home wedding venue and you’re there!

When it comes to your attire, what could be more royal than a ballgown? Pair a full, extravagant skirt with a dramatic train and veil, and you’ll have guests gasping as you make your grand entrance. If you like this idea, but fear the volume will impede you on the dancefloor, opt for a detachable skirt, allowing you to transform your look into a sleek silhouette for the evening. Finally, your very own crown is a must-have for this theme, whether it’s a flower version for a Queen Titania twist or a bejewelled tiara.

TOP UP YOUR TAN

The UK’s largest sunbed chain, Indigo Sun, has noticed the increasing demand for healthy tanning in Merseyside and opened its seventh outlet in the region and first in the Wirral. Part of the recently launched retail development on Woodchurch Road in Birkenhead, the new high-tech facility benefits from a £350,000 investment and is the second salon to open following the brand’s refresh.

Indigo Sun is a supporter of responsible tanning with extensively trained staff able to offer guidance for all skin types. As well as premium beds and vertical units the salon will also be offering collagen red light therapy beds, which aid muscle recovery and help with ageing skin, stretch marks, scars, circulation, pigmentation and psoriasis. What’s more, modern sunbeds now boast features such as bluetooth, allowing customers to connect their phones and play their own music. They also have sophisticated aircon systems and sensitivity settings for specific skin types.

Frank Taylor, founder and CEO of the family-run company says, “We know a large number of our customers have been making the trip into Liverpool and will be delighted to have an outlet on their doorstep. Likewise, we realised we may have been out of reach for many who’d like to be able to visit regularly.”

The salon will be open 9am to 9pm on weekdays, and 10am to 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Find out more at www.indigosun.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES

With the cost of living crisis in full swing, we had a chat with local wedding consultant Jennifer Walker, The Wedding Wellness Woman, for her thoughts on how this might affect you as you plan your wedding. “A wedding day will be one of the biggest expenditures of a couple’s life,” Jennifer says. “With the financial crisis well and truly here, those wanting to wed are having to be extra careful with how they spend their pennies. But if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that life’s too short to compromise.” Read on as she tells us more...

“There are so many ways to save money, if you can make your peace with throwing out the obligatory, traditional to-do list and start making your own rules! This doesn’t mean scrimping, it means investing money on what’s going to generate as many good feels as possible. If you concentrate on spending your money on things that are important to you, your money will be well spent.

“Working with a wedding consultant can definitely help. It may seem like a nice-to-have that a budget can’t stretch to, but speaking to someone who can help uncover what’s truly important in order to spend your money wisely could be the best investment you ever make!

“My approach is: if you’ve always dreamed of wearing an expensive designer wedding dress, but it means your guests will be eating pizza for tea... do it! If you both love festivals and you want one in honour of your happiness... do it! One thing you can’t afford is to look back on your big day and experience regret, and no one ever regretted spending their money on memories!”

For keeps

The stunning Liverpool skyline was an extra and most welcome guest at Abi and Jason’s city-centre wedding Images courtesy of Jessica Lang Photography

Abi and Jason met while working at Game. They hit it off immediately thanks to a wealth of common interests and quickly became fast friends, texting each other every day and spending time together outside of work. “A few months later, those friendship feelings turned into a romance, and as plenty of mutual friends told me Jason fancied me, I took the plunge and kissed him on a night out,” Abi shares. The risk paid off as they’ve been inseparable ever since!

Jason planned to propose the night before Abi’s 30th birthday. The couple had gone into the city centre for a meal and a few drinks. “The issue was, that I had zero idea of when I was going to propose,” Jason remembers. “I was properly nervous and kept subconsciously checking the ring in my pocket.” He was waiting for the perfect moment, but with the city centre getting more and more packed and raucus around him, that moment never came. “It got late and I was ready to go home,” Abi says. No sooner had she got into her pyjamas back at the flat, she heard Jason calling her into the living room. It was there he got down on one knee and proposed, with their song, Most Beautiful Girl In The World playing in the background. “As soon as I realised what was happening, I was so nervous and surprised that I couldn’t answer at first! Of course, eventually I did say, ‘Yes,’” Abi shares.

By the time Abi and Jason decided to check out a wedding fair at Hope Street Hotel, they’d already dismissed a whole host of venues that hadn’t felt right for them. Abi loved the style of the place with its bare white brick walls, wooden floors and contemporary furniture: “It’s laid back and simple, yet luxurious,” she explains. What appealed to Jason on the other hand were the wedding packages and how much they included. However, what clinched it for the pair of them was seeing the fifth floor venue spaces. “The view from each room was astonishing and once we saw it, it became an immediate, ‘Yes.’ Other venues we’d seen were nice, but just didn’t compare, our minds were made up,” Jason explains.

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple decided on a relaxed, simple and fun vibe for their wedding, enjoyed with their family and close friends. Having picked a palette of purple, plum, gold and champagne, Abi set to work creating the favours. These were little pouches containing chocolates and tied with gold ribbon. Each had a wooden Welsh love spoon charm attached to reflect Abi’s Welsh heritage.

Abi’s vision for the flowers was a wild, natural, swept-up style in her favourite colours. Her bouquet featured soft, natural foliages, mauve roses, purple lisianthus, nude roses, lilac freesias, and gypsophila. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were smaller versions of the same with overall lighter shades to contrast with their dresses. The gents meanwhile wore buttonholes of plum lisianthus with gypsophila and foliage, except Jason whose buttonhole also included a champagne rose.

The centrepieces were kept simple in the form of vases filled with flowers, mirroring the bouquets, with tea lights scattered around the tables. The top table also had a wreath of eucalyptus running along it.

The big-day bake was a three-tier semi-naked cake with gold leaf detail, decorated with fresh flowers to match the bouquets. The top tier was vanilla and raspberry, the middle was vanilla and white chocolate, and the bottom tier was chocolate oreo flavour – delicious! It was completed with a topper bearing the newlyweds’ initials made from gold wire. They also had a wonderful Kransekake, a Norwegian celebration cake made by Jason’s mum to reflect his Norwegian heritage. The wedding tradition goes that when the bride and groom hold the top ring of this stacked wreath cake, the number of rings that break off are the number of children they’ll have.

Further styling included a flower walll and super-cool neon light, which read: “Happily Ever After.” There was also a memory table in honour of absent friends and family. Abi made little hearts with their names on from white clay and surrounded them with candles. They gave these tokens to their family members to keep afterwards.

LOOKING THE PART

Abi looked breathtaking in a Mark Lesley gown. She accessorised it with a veil that was her something borrowed, as both of Jason’s sisters had worn it at their weddings. Her something old and blue was a Norwegian krone coin that once belonged to Jason’s grandfather, with a blue ribbon tied through the hole in the middle.

Jason wore a charcoal grey suit with a white shirt. To stand apart from his groomsmen, he paired this with a more detailed tie in a different purple shade with a paisley design. He also wore personalised cufflinks, a gift from Abi, engraved with the wedding date and the words, “For keeps,” which is something Jason has always said about their partnership since the start.

The three bridesmaids wore plum dresses with a tiered ruffle hem and metallic gold heeled sandals. Each had a different hairstyle accessorised with gold slides and pearl pins.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Loved ones were treated to a sweet table fully stocked with sweeties and cookies, which needless to say went down a storm! The couple also hired a magic mirror, which was similarly popular. “Our guests loved taking pictures on it, especially with the props provided. Everyone got a copy of the photo to take home and Jason and I got copies in a presentation box, as well as a USB stick with everything on.

For the evening, a fabulous DJ entertained all assembled and kept the dancefloor full. One of Abi’s highlights was their first dance to Taylor Swift’s Lover. Then, when twilight fell the couple headed out onto the balcony for sparklers. Jason remembers, “Only the bridesmaids were asked to join us for this moment as we assumed the groomsmen wouldn’t be interested. But I thought it best to go ask them and went inside to find out. They practically ran past me without saying a word. I’ve never seen three grown men so excited to get their hands on sparklers!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

One of the bride’s standout moments was during the ceremony. She tells us, “I didn’t feel nervous until right before I went to walk down the aisle, then it hit me that this was it! I set off to How Long Will I Love You by Ellie Goulding, and the moment I saw Jason and he smiled at me, I instantly relaxed. I don’t think I stopped smiling from there on in, it really was the happiest day.”

The newlyweds will always remember the spectacular sunset that evening. Jason says, “I was the last to enter Fifth One after the wedding breakfast, and seeing my new wife, friends and family out on the balcony with the sunset behind them, smiling and having a great time, was unreal. The venue could have cost twice as much and that moment would’ve still made it worth every penny!”

THE NEWLYWEDS’ TOP TIPS

Abi says, “Your wedding is about you and your partner, don’t get sucked in to thinking what you should and shouldn’t have. Just do what feels right for you and it will be perfect.” Jason adds, “A lot of people take the week of the wedding off in order to get details sorted. By all means, book the time off work, but do everything you can to get as much organised as you can at least two weeks before the big day. I didn’t, and I think I aged 50 years in that week, trying to get everything done at the last second. Instead, use that time to relax, practice your speech, see family and friends, and to be with your partner.”

WHITE WEDDING Nice day for a

Lydia and Alexander chose a classic, traditional and sophisticated look for their big day

Lydia and Alexander met on a night out in Formby with mutual friends. By the end of the evening they’d already arranged their first date, having quickly discovered how much they had in common.

Alexander proposed in one of their favourite weekend break destinations, the Lake District. “We spend a lot of time here, so it’s a very special place for us with a lot of great memories, this topping them all,” Lydia says. When they entered their hotel room, Lydia found it full of balloons with a bottle of champagne and strawberries on the table. It was here that Alexander asked the all-important question, much to Lydia’s surprise. The couple had been together for three years at this point and it was an easy, “Yes,” for the bride-to-be.

Lydia and Alexander were quickly drawn to the intimate feeling of the grand estate, Dorfold Hall. “We viewed others, but they all seemed as though you could easily feel lost if there weren’t enough guests to fill the place. Dorfold didn’t have that,” Lydia explains. What sealed the deal for them though were the plans for a new event space, Le Curie. “It was only a building site when we booked, but we had trust in the venue that this would become a wonderful reality just in time,” Lydia says. So, the date was set for 27th August, 2022.

27 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore a simple and elegant A-line gown by Essense of Australia, with a diamanté belt and lace embroidered veil.

Alexander was dressed in a black tuxedo and bow tie, which matched the groomsmen. The only difference was that the groom’s shirt had black buttons, while the other gents’ were white.

The bridesmaids looked beautiful in baby blue satin gowns with a slight A-line and a split down one side. They wore their hair up in a low ponytail with a crystal hair piece.

A harpist played as I walked down the aisle. We then had Craig Owen perform on the piano and violin at the drinks reception and during the wedding breakfast.

We had personalised candles made scented with Jo Malone Peony and Suede, which is the perfume I wore on the day. We also had a box of two macarons for each guest tied with a white ribbon and topped with a white rose.

28

My dad owns a white Bentley V8S Continental, which he bought along for the day. We used it for some photos and a short drive, just the two of us, after the ceremony.

I found an ornate mirror and painted it white to create the table plan. I then printed off the guest list for each table to stick to it, topped with diamantés to accent it. It stood on an easel supplied by the venue.

Our bouquets too were themed in white and green and featured roses and peonies, which are my favourite flowers. The groom’s party wore white rose buttonholes with foliage, and we chose the same as corsages for our grandmothers.

The Cheshire Dining Experience were great, and the food was amazing. During our drinks reception we had canapés of arancini, satay chicken skewers and duck pancakes –some of our favourite foods. We wanted our wedding breakfast to be light and summery. For starter we had leek and potato soup, followed by a main course of chicken ballotine wrapped in Parma ham, and finished with white chocolate cheesecake for dessert.

Escapade Bars provided all the drinks and we chose a personalised cocktail called a Mr and Mrs Martini, which was our favourite, along with a lychee Martini and Pimms for the garden drinks reception.

We also had flower garlands on the top table with a flower arch behind the two of us. We wanted traditional white-wedding style blooms for our classy summer nuptials.

29 REAL WEDDINGS

We wanted a large but simple cake. So, we went for a four-tier bake with each tier separated by clear acrylic stands, allowing each one to stand out. It was flavoured chocolate, vanilla and red velvet.

We had amazing suppliers who all made our day perfect, especially the Tall Toastmaster. He was there for every need and really looked after us.

Make sure all the small details are planned beforehand as they really stand out. That way you don’t have to worry about them on the day.

Our centrepieces consisted of white flowers, mainly roses with foliage. They sat on acrylic stands surrounded by floating candles.

During the evening six-piece band Motown Gold, including a DJ and sax player, entertained us all. We finished the night with a firework display set to one of our favourite songs, A Sky Full Of Stars by Coldplay, this was the highlight of the night.

Ashley and Craig’s love for Everton FC brought them together

Ashley and Craig are both avid Everton FC supporters and followed one another on Twitter. They’d also bumped into each other a few times at away day matches and became good friends. Football started the conversation between them but it wasn’t long before this turned into exchanged numbers and texting. They went on their first date late in 2014, and the rest as they say is history! “Everything just clicked into place, we were good friends, had similar personalities and enjoyed being around one another,” Craig says.

Craig proposed after four-and-a-half years together, in front of the Magic Kingdom Castle, Florida. He’d planned to pop the question before the fireworks, which didn’t quite turn out as he’d hoped when they got stuck on a broken-down monorail and missed the photographers. Ashley didn’t suspect a thing, while Craig frantically tried to think of a plan B. Luckily, the photographers returned after the display and the couple got in line to have their picture taken, which Ashley expected would be just like any other. When they reached the front though, Craig was down on one knee. “The crowd cheered and celebrated with us, which made it so magical, especially as it was at Disney,” Ashley remembers.

From the moment they started planning, they both knew they wanted a UK winter wedding. Peckforton Castle has always been a wedding venue Ashley dreamed of, but following their engagement at the Disney Castle, it seemed even more appropriate. “Everything about the venue from the grounds to the low-lighting and original features were exactly what we wanted. We decided to have a three-year engagement, so when we looked at dates for 2022, 30th December fell perfectly,” Ashley explains.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore Farrah by Pronovias. I found the dress online shortly after we got engaged and took a screenshot, thinking that something similar would be perfect. After trying on a few gowns at My Funny Valentine, which stocked Pronovias, I decided to try Farrah to find out what elements suited me. But as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one. It was a definite say-yes-to-the-dress moment!

My dress was so big, wide and long – I hadn’t anticipated how I was going to get down the aisle with all the candles! As I was walking I could hear everyone gasping. I soon came to realise that this wasn’t because of my dress, but because I was so close to the flames and my veil was hovering above them at all times!

I chose a longer length veil than cathedral, as the train of Farrah is so long. It was plain with a hint of sparkle so that it twinkled in the candlelight.

Craig says, “The minute I saw Ash walking down the aisle, she took my breath away! She looked amazing, and although I didn’t think I’d cry, the tears were instant.” The aisle walk and ceremony were the standouts for me too. Walking with my dad and seeing the everybody and Craig for the first time was amazing. All of my planning had come to life.

I knew I wanted a traditional white wedding and chose an aisle laced with candles and blossom trees to create a winter wonderland.

“A receiving line after our ceremony was the best thing we did, as we’d then seen everybody at least once meaning the pressure is off.”
The groom wore a black tuxedo to match his party and the father-of-the-bride.

My flowers were white roses, with my bridesmaids having the same. The buttonholes and mothers’ corsages too contained the same blooms.

Our centrepieces were cream blossom trees. Each table was covered with a mirror before being set to really give it the wow factor. Every cabinet in the room was filled with white roses and candles creating the perfect setting.

For our favours we had custom-made Christmas crackers filled with a Molton Brown shower gel, Yankee Candle Snow In Love, Ferrero Rocher and a Bailey’s miniature. The table names were based on a happily ever after fairy tale, so Chapter One, Chapter Two and so on. The signs were handmade books to match the rest of our stationery.

Our cake was classic, simple and featured our favourite flavours – lemon drizzle, Lotus Biscoff, Nutella and Ferrero Rocher. We wanted it to represent us, so we went away from traditional flavours and chose something we love. We cut it with a sword during the evening.

The bridesmaids were all dressed in black dresses from Jarlo London, which were simple and elegant with a small train.

During the ceremony and drinks reception Craig Owen played a variety of old and new songs on the violin and piano.
35 REAL WEDDINGS

In the evening, we also had a cheese cake, which was a huge hit with guests. It featured 14 different cheeses and who doesn’t love a cheeseboard at Christmas? This was beautifully dressed with a choice of chutneys and crackers.

The groomsmen’s tuxes had a satin stripe and each gent wore personalised cufflinks bearing their initials.

In the evening, DJ Lee Morrison kept the dancefloor full. He played a fantastic mix of music, gradually turning into more of a dance vibe, which is the music Craig and I enjoy. He was also joined by Jesus Martin, an incredible saxophonist.

We had confetti cannons for our first dance and throughout the night.

THE W-DAY TEAM

We can’t thank our suppliers enough, they were all incredible. Particularly, Rainbows Party Shop and photographer Laura. She was lovely to be around all day and kept everybody calm. Rainbows too were fantastic, they stayed the entire time and switched the rooms around three times.

HERE COMES

Louise and Heather met at work in 2014, and soon became friends. Before long, Louise found herself attracted to Heather thanks to her quirky fashion sense, brilliant sense of humour and fierce sense of loyalty. Heather in turn found herself attracted not only to Louise’s personality, but also her “randomness!”

lunch was late. The couple fell in love with The Chester Fields for a few reasons. “It’s so natural and rustic looking, you don’t have to do anything to make it look amazing as it already is,” Louise says. Plus, they were both impressed by the venue’s approach to weddings. There were no standard packages and the team were happy to leave all decisions on how the day would be run to the happy couple. “We told them our ideas and they made them come to life,” Louise remembers. So, the date was set for 25th August, 2022, and here Louise continues the story... REAL WEDDINGS

Heather proposed on Christmas Day, while still in their pyjamas opening their presents. She’d prepared a box for Louise containing notes telling the story of their journey together as a couple, which ended with Heather asking Louise to marry her. There was a beautiful ring in the box too! Louise was so shocked that Christmas 39

Sunflowers and bright gerberas were the feature of our floral arrangements. The centrepieces were log slices topped with jam jars and floating candles. The jars were decorated with raffia, lace and small sunflowers.

Heather wore black and gold and the most quirky shoes! She chose this outfit as she’s not a dress person, but wanted to feel special and stand out on the day.

We had a rolling barbecue all day, so the atmosphere was really free and easy. People mingled and sat with whoever they wanted. In the evening we enjoyed wood fired pizzas.

I chose my dress because it was light and floaty. I paired it with sandals and a diamanté hair piece.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake we opted for a stack of chocolate chip Welsh cakes.

40

We had a photo booth in the back of a VW Campervan, and live band, The Electric. We also had a quiz in the afternoon. It was such good fun and even included modelling balloons!

Nothing about our day was traditional, and that’s what we loved about it. Heather’s speech was even made up of bullet point notes on her phone!

We mini-mooned in York and will be going on a big family holiday this year.

perfect PICTURE

Fearof the unknown can become overwhelming when planning a wedding. After all, it’s not something you do every day! So, we’ve decided to remove that for you when it comes to one of the most important elements of your day – the photography. Here, some of the region’s finest wedding photographers, tell us what to expect from the moment you set out on your planning journey to the time you spend putting your album together.

BEFORE THE BIG DAY FINDING THE ONE

“Back in the early 90s, there were several wedding photographers in most towns, now there can be hundreds in a local area,” says Kevin from Kevin Brown Photography. Indeed, the sheer range of choice is a daunting prospect – where do you start with such an important decision? Kevin suggests, “Try recommendations first, check out Google reviews and find a style you like.”

Photographer Jaine-Briscoe Price says, “Recommendations from your chosen venue will help, as they’ll know who’s worked there before, however fresh eyes produce imagery that’s different too.”

So, what’s vital to look out for when searching for a wedding photographer? Jessica Lang from Jessica Lang Photography tells us, “Being photographed when you aren’t used to it can make you feel super-vulnerable, so it’s vital that you feel comfortable and safe with your

photographer. Before booking, be sure to have a meeting with the person behind the camera, even if it’s just a chat over the phone. Professionalism, portfolio and skill-set are important aspects of choosing the one, but so is getting along with them. Having a good rapport with each other will not only make being photographed a lot more easy and fun, those vibes will come across in your final images too.”

STYLE IT OUT

From documentary to traditional, relaxed to formal, there’s a wide range of photographic styles to look out for, so you’ll need to settle on your vibe as a couple to narrow down your search. Jaine has some advice: “I don’t think you have to be exact in the style you like. You might appreciate a more relaxed, candid approach, but still want some family shots and a few more fashion-led, dramatic images. Delve deeper into the photographer’s website and look at whole weddings, not just

their chosen images on Instagram. Look at weddings at venues similar to your own that were captured at the same time of year as your big day to get the clearest idea of style.”

Still confused? Jessica gives us some clues on identifying your perfect match: “If photos not just of you both but of those celebrating with you are important, consider a photographer with a laid back, fun, documentary approach; or if you want to feel like movie stars for the day, consider a photographer with a romantic, posed, stylish, editorial portfolio. Alternatively, if you’re super-traditional, then perhaps look for a photographer who’ll capture your day very formally. Editing style will vary too, so think about what you like. You will come across very colourful, fun portfolios, bright and beautiful, cinematic and urban, romantic and rustic, even a few combined.”

Similarly, Jessica says, “If your photographer is prepared and aware of who you’d like in your formals, it makes everything so much less stressful on the day. For any moments unique to your wedding or of significant importance to you, keep your photographer in the loop and communicate this to them. A little heads up can make everyone’s life easier.”

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

In preparation for the big day, you’ll need to discuss with your photographer detailed timings of how your day will unfold. Jaine explains, “We run through a timetable together and agree a plan two months prior, before sending it on to the necessary suppliers: venue, make-up artist, hair stylist etc. This ensures that on the day, everything runs smoothly and you can relax and enjoy it.”

Jessica is of the same mind: “Your venue will likely discuss an allocated time slot that your photographer will be given to get their key images, typically during the drinks reception before you all sit down to eat. Be sure to check this works with your photographer as you don’t want to feel rushed and clash with your caterers.”

ON THE BIG DAY SEEING DOUBLE

JUST THE TWO OF US

If you’re not a fan of being in front of the camera, the idea of an engagement shoot, if offered it by your wedding photographer, may be something you’d rather run away from. But we’d highly recommend taking them up on their offer, and here’s why.

Jessica explains, “I love engagement or pre-wedding shoots, they truly take away any awkwardness that you may feel about being photographed. It also gives you some quality time with your photographer allowing you to experience first hand how they work and they can get an idea of how the two of you are in front of the camera. And as a bonus, you get some fabulous images to cherish.”

Jaine shares: “Some make an additional charge, while others (like myself) include engagement shoots as part of the service. Bear in mind that if you book a photographer from miles away it’s going to be difficult to arrange this confidence building shoot.” We agree, keep it local!

IN THE PICTURE

While any photographer worth their salt will be more than adept at capturing your big day to perfection, they’re not mind readers. So, providing them with short list of must-have subjects is advisable. Kevin says, “We always ask our couples for their must-have shots, as there are usually relatives or friends who’ve travelled a long way to be there.”

Some photographers will offer you the opportunity of booking a second shooter, and now you’ve arrived at the big day, you’ll see just how invaluable they can be. Kevin, who nearly always works together with his wife Carole, explains, “It’s great to have certain aspects of the day shot from different angles at the same time. Carole is not only a great photographer in her own right, but very in tune with our couples.”

Jaine too is an advocate for this approach: “I feel a second photographer is vital. They cover such different angles and at different times. Plus, if the day is running late, they can shoot detail imagery or

“A wedding day is like a relay. We all have our part to play and getting it right from the start allows the day to flow in a relaxed manner.”

candid socialising while the main photographer is capturing the key elements of the day.”

Jessica says, “Two photographers can bounce off each other and have more space covered, meaning they’re less likely to miss anything, and are particularly good if you want your prep covered. If you decided to book a second, your photographer will thank you and you’ll receive more wonderful pictures in your final gallery!”

SAY CHEESE

Believe it or not the post-ceremony drinks reception can be a make or break situation depending on what you’ve decided to do with your group shots. The key is balance. On one hand, as Kevin says, “Wedding photographs are part of your family history, one day they’ll be seen by loved ones who haven’t even been born yet! We do around 85 per cent documentary and 15 per cent posed group shots, all done unobtrusively and without keeping guests hanging around endlessly.”

Jessica agrees that being selective and concise is the secret: “Group shots are lovely, but the truth is, having too many can have a negative impact on your day. Your cheeks will hurt, all you’ll be thinking about

is that prosecco waiting for you at the bar and you’ll curse your family members when they don’t listen or run off to the toilet when they’re needed for a photo! A good rule of thumb when considering who to have an arranged group shot with is to ask yourself whether you’d hang that photo on the wall. If the answer is ‘no,’ take it off your list. I advise my couples to have no more than 10 formal photos, I don’t want to spend any longer than 15 minutes on these, and trust me, you don’t either. Documentary shots from your day will tell much more of a story and you’ll treasure them more as they’re so natural.”

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

“There’s a great saying about the conditions here in the UK,” says Kevin. “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.” He continues, “No one can do anything about it and can just as likely have blue skies in December as we might endless rain in July. We always check the weather a few days before the wedding and devise the best back up plan. If it clears later in the day, there can be some fabulous, dramatic skies and puddles for reflection shots.” Make the most of it and look on the bright side!

Jaine has some reassuring words, “Don’t worry. A good photographer will always have a plan B for wet weather, including knowledge of their kit to transfer certain shots inside. It’s all down to experience, planning and understanding how to get the best from any situation.”

“Going outside in the rain might not be so bad, fun even! Get creative and embrace the uniqueness of your day, take a big brolly with you and kiss in the rain. If you wake up the next morning with a pristine wedding dress or suit, you haven’t had a good enough time!” – Jessica Lang

AFTER THE BIG DAY

When the last of the confetti has been swept away and you’re headed off on honeymoon, your photographer will set to work on your images. You’ll find that each professional will work slightly differently, so your expectations should be based on exactly what you’ve discussed with them at time of booking. Here, Jaine, Jessica and Kevin tell us how they prefer to work to give you an idea of the range available.

JAINE BRISCOE-PRICE PHOTOGRAPHY

“Many photographers shoot and hand over a gallery of imagery for their couples and guests to download. This can be an agreed set of 400 images, or the whole gallery shot (I’ve heard of some giving up to 3,000). Personally, I feel that a finished album to last through future generations is the best option. Each of my couples select their chosen images from 25 to 200, these are then colour-balanced and prepared for album design. I view these as storybooks: they’re designed to live on the coffee table and be enjoyed week on week, year after year. I actually shoot with the album in mind, using layout and balance to create certain shots, which are then crafted together with the more candid images to tell the story of the day.

“I’ve always felt that handing over a disc or gallery simply gives the newlyweds another task. So, I spend a dedicated few hours with each of my couples immediately after their honeymoon to ensure their memories will be beautifully immortalised in their final album, which they receive from Italy three months later. Plus, they’ll still have access to the online gallery for friends and family to view and purchase prints in the meantime.”

JESSICA LANG PHOTOGRAPHY

“When I come to edit images, I’ll choose the final selection as I can

be objective. I know how to get the balance right between variety and over-compensating. Can you imagine looking through your final set and being bored because there’s too many?

“Copyright of the images remains with the creator – me. However, I give written permission to my couples for them to be reproduced for personal use. Basically, anything goes as long as you aren’t using them for financial gain. I love to share the photographs I take as much as I can, building my portfolio helps me carry on doing what I love. However, if you have reason or preference for your images to be kept completely private, then I’m more than happy to cover that in our initial agreement at time of booking.

“The delivery of final sets to my couples usually comes in various formats including online galleries, USBs and prints. After this, I’ll leave options open for albums or further prints to be ordered should couples or their loved ones wish.”

KEVIN BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

“After the wedding our turnaround time for images to be ready for the couple is two to three weeks, even during the summer. Our couples then receive either a bespoke USB or a digital download of their images, although we retain copyright of the images they’re free to make copies.

“An album can be added to our all-day package at any time, occasionally couples order for their first anniversary, which happens to be paper.”

PALETTE PICKS

Local wedding florists offer oodles of floral inspiration based on popular colour schemes

Surely, it’s the gentle, romantic nature of flowers as well as their long-standing association with love that make them such a key feature at weddings. There are so many ways to incorporate them in your venue styling as well as your attire that you can choose to go all out or keep it minimal. Not only the style of your floral displays but also their palette can bring the overall look and vibe together. Some couples have even taken inspiration for their entire colour theme from inspiring Pinterest pics of beautiful wedding blooms.

Here, the county’s incredible floral designers have helped us to put together a swoon-worthy moodboard based on the most enduringly popular modern wedding palettes. Look out for Pantone colour of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, which makes an appearance. We hope you’ll find something here to fall in love with.

HOT TOPIC: SUSTAINABILITY

This issue we asked our experts to tell us how to plan a wedding sustainably RECYCLE AND REUSE

Hannah Mayo-Caligari from Event In A Tent (www.event-in-a-tent.co.uk) says: Sustainability has quickly become a huge consideration when planning a wedding in 2023, as there are so many aspects of such a celebration that can be a burden on the environment. Here are a few tips to help.

When choosing your tent hire company, look at their products and sustainability initiatives. Event In A Tent’s tipi and stretch tents are of the highest quality, and we have a skilled seamstress who completes repairs to them so that our tents can last as long as possible. When they reach the end of their event life, we donate them to charities or use them for patching healthy tents. Our matting is also sustainable as it’s washed and reused, so no temporary flooring goes into landfill.

A big factor in the wedding world is confetti – it often contains plastics damaging to our planet. However, there are a lot of companies that offer

a dried flower alternative. Not only is it environmentally friendly, it looks beautiful too.

Consider the number of deliveries coming to your venue to serve your big day. Event In A Tent can provide the tents, furniture, lighting and extras such as heating and dancefloors, so we save on vehicle journeys, cutting down on emissions. Also, on the theme of transport, put on a coach or bus for your guests. This gets your loved ones in the wedding mood while reducing your carbon footprint.

When it comes to your attire, think preloved fashion. We understand that wedding dress shopping is one of the highlights of the planning process, but buying preloved cuts down on single-use items heading for landfill. If you decide you can’t compromise on your dream dress, even the smaller items such as gloves, dried flower crowns, handkerchiefs and bridesmaids’ dresses all make a big difference to our planet.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Rachel Leon, weddings and events manager at The Manor at Greasby (https://themanorgreasby.co.uk) says: We’re glad to see more and more couples approaching their big days with sustainability in mind. Incorporating waste-reducing aspects in your wedding is a great place to start. From hiring key décor elements to utilising eco-friendly dried flowers, there are some fantastic ways to minimise on-the-day waste.

What’s more, sourcing a venue and wedding suppliers close to home can also help to support the environment. Not only does this assist in reducing carbon emissions from travel for large wedding parties and suppliers, but it gives your big day its own local character.

www.wearebomber.com 53 EXPERT ADVICE

IT CAN BE DONE!

Celebrant Gill Collins of Gill Collins Ceremonies (www.gillcollinsceremonies.co.uk) says: A couple of years ago, I was fortunate enough to attend a wedding where the bride and groom had put every effort into making their big day as sustainable as possible. All of the food was locally-sourced and the chefs prepared and cooked the whole menu onsite, so the fuel cost of transporting any produce was kept to a minimum, while the carbon footprint was reduced. The same principle was applied to the hire of any equipment, such as table cloths and chair covers. The plates and cutlery were all reusable, and no plastic was used at all.

The centrepieces featured plant arrangements that the guests could take home and plant in their own gardens. The candles were made from soy wax, and again, loved ones were encouraged to take them home and reuse the jars. The favours were handmade soaps, created using natural ingredients and wrapped in reusable muslin bags.

The reception was held in a local village hall, which was completely transformed into the most beautiful venue using fabrics and hundreds of fairylights, however I know that these elements have since been passed on and used at another four weddings and one birthday party!

All of the guests were booked into local hotels and ferried to and from the venue in minibuses to reduce the number of vehicles required. So, everything was sourced within a radius of a few miles of the venue and all elements were either reusable or recycled keeping waste to an absolute minimum. This can all be achieved with reasonable ease, all that’s required is a slightly different way of thinking.

A NEW LEASE OF LIFE

Rachael Whitwam from O’Hares Jewellers (www.oharesjewellers.co.uk) says: A simple way to make a step towards a more sustainable choice is to look for retailers that use minimal and/or recycled packaging. In addition, instead of buying new wedding rings, look for vintage or family pieces. We offer a service to remake items that couples already have. We can reuse the metal and stones from most pieces of jewellery. This is a lovely option as not only is it sustainable, it allows you to bring new life to a piece that’s already been loved and worn by a treasured family member, while tailoring it to suit your own style and taste.

CAKE TO BE KIND

Clare Deary from Cake on the Lake (www.cakeonthelake.com) says: All of the ingredients for my wedding cakes are sourced responsibly, minimising any negative impact on the environment. Where relevant and possible, I purchase ingredients with recyclable packaging. I’m also reducing my food miles by using locally-sourced, British seasonal ingredients. Some of these include British flour; Fairtrade sugar; truly organic free-range, locallysourced eggs; British milk and cream with high animal welfare standards and a fair price for farmers; unrefined icing sugar; and much more.

Another way wedding cake makers such as myself can ensure your bigday bake is sustainable is to use a recipe like Madeira sponge, which will last longer and prevent waste. If you do have some left over though, it’s usually still tasty to eat two to three days afterwards. My cakes are never frozen, so you can always pop left over slices in the freezer and enjoy them over the following months. A further way to minimise waste is to serve your showstopping bake as a dessert.

Using natural decorations to adorn your cake means there are fewer materials left for landfill once it’s been eaten and the boards recycled. Why not try edible sugar flowers, which can be displayed in your home afterwards, or fresh flowers that can be pressed? Alternatively, opting for a naked bake uses less ingredients and is also cheaper for you.

So many processes in baking involve the use of plastic – piping bags, baking paper, spatulas. Then there’s the transportation of the final product to think about. Many boxes created for storing and moving cakes will also use plastic in one way or another. Trying to reduce this will make a difference. Some may be unavoidable, but as awareness of plastic use rises, many more ethical options have become available.

Q&A Fashion and beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

TRIED AND TESTED

I’m really nervous about having my hair done for my wedding day as I’m normally quite fussy about my look. What can I expect from a trial?

Bridal hair specialist Nicky Agnew at The Hair Lounge (www.instagram.com/nickys_bridal_lounge) says: It’s quite normal to have some brides feel a little uneasy and unsure of what to expect from a hair trial. They’re unsure of how to wear their hair or what best suits them. This is why having a trial is super-important for both you and your chosen stylist. It gives you both the time to get to know each other, which I feel is the most important part, but it also gives you the opportunity to try out a few hair styles. This way, you get to visualise your final look and see what style you feel most comfortable with.

I really want my brides to leave the trial comfortable, confident and a little more relaxed. So, I like to ask plenty of important questions about your hair, how you usually wear it on a day-to-day basis, your likes and dislikes, and more.

During the appointment you’ll also get the chance together to work out the timings for the big day and discuss any further important details your stylist will need to know.

RING THE CHANGES

With so many different materials available for our wedding bands, how do we know the difference and benefits between them all to make the right choice for our wedding day?

Natasha House, marketing manager at F.Hinds (www.fhinds.co.uk) says: Since the bride’s wedding ring metal should be the same as her engagement ring metal, choosing a wedding ring can sometimes be easier than expected! However, the groom has a little bit more to choose from. The most popular wedding ring metals are:

• 9ct or 18ct white gold. White gold is a modern twist on traditional yellow gold. It’s made up of lighter alloys and is plated in rhodium, which is what gives it its bright ‘white’ and chrome-like shine. It’s chosen as a cheaper alternative to platinum or palladium, but it does need plating every couple of years or so (depending on the wearer).

• 9ct or 18ct gold. A shiny, bright yellow metal that symbolises the light of the sun. Also known as yellow gold, this metal is very traditional. 18ct gold costs more than 9ct because it contains double the amount of pure gold.

• 9ct rose gold. Rose gold was popular for lavish jewellery pieces in the 1920s, and this blush metal is coming back in fashion. Rose gold

looks beautiful on those who have olive skin because of the pink, rosy tones and it matches other rose gold and yellow gold jewellery pieces very well.

• Platinum. Arguably one of the most luxurious wedding ring metals, platinum is a very sought-after, strong and precious metal. It has antitarnish properties so it keeps its beautiful bright shine without needing to be replated (unlike white gold).

• Palladium. Palladium is a strong, light and durable metal and is often chosen for its hypo-allergenic properties. Part of the platinum family but a cheaper alternative, it’s more precious than gold or titanium.

• Titanium. Discovered in Cornwall in the 18th century, titanium has a slight natural grey colour to it. It’s a wedding ring option if you want something that’s light, strong and hard wearing. Titanium is a lot cheaper than other metals like palladium and platinum, so works well if you’re on a budget. If you do a lot of hands-on tasks or work in a manual labour environment, then it could be the ideal wedding ring for you!

Tip: When choosing your ring’s metal, keep your lifestyle in mind. If you work with your hands, then a stronger one like titanium, palladium or platinum might be best for you. 68

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

WhenI met with celebrity hairstylist and OGX ambassador, Michael Douglas to mark the launch of OGX’s new Colour Retention range, I can say with confidence that I was definitely having colour retention problems. I’d recently taken the plunge with my dream pastel violet hair colour, but my beloved shade was quickly running away from me. Michael very kindly offered to top my colour up, and while he mixed together a stunning new violet for me, I asked him about OGX’s new range. “All of the brand’s products are PH-balanced with sulphate-free surfactants, which don’t bind to anything you don’t want them to meaning they’re all very gentle on colour,” he told me.

I’m sure we can all agree that there’s not much better than that fresh-from-the-salon feeling, which is why OGX created the new collection, to extend salon or at home colour for up to four weeks. The new products also contain a colour bond plex technology, which helps to protect and strengthen strands for healthylooking, vibrant hair.

With the gorgeous colour applied, Michael began to style my short crop and I was curious whether he had any advice for brides-to-be thinking about colouring their locks pre-

wedding. He said, “It’s so high risk isn’t it? Do not do anything experimental, that’s the main thing! A lot of people seem to want to look like someone else on their wedding day, but I always think it’s better to look like the best, sexiest version of you – make you look great that day!

“Unless you wear your hair up a lot though, I never think it’s such a good idea. Remember, photos are forever. My favourite look was when Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt. She had great hair, everyone knew her for her that. So, actually she just had it down with some little diamonds sewn into it on a thin thread, which pinned it really nicely. I’ve tried the technique myself with a thin fishing wire woven through the hair before a blow dry and it just supports the style beautifully.”

Michael continued, “I also like the idea of doing something for the day and changing it up for the evening.” I was totally on board with this, having noticed an increasing trend in brides pulling off an outfit switch-up between the ‘I dos’ and celebrations. Michael suggested: “There‘s something nice about having the hair scraped back for the morning and then something a wavy in the evening or vice versa.”

By now, I was delighted with my own hair and wanted to know more about achieving the same look at home. After all, we can’t all have a celebrity hair stylist on call! He said, “A lot of people want frizz-free shiny hair and ask me on Instagram what shampoo and conditioner they need to buy, but it’s actually down to styling technique. Use a decent bristle brush with a metal barrel, hold the dryer at a particular angle for a long time, about four seconds longer than you think you need to, and keep the brush moving. So, how did you come to work with OGX as it’s brand ambassador? I asked. “During lockdown when all the hairdressers shut down, I decided to go on social media and talk about the best consumer products to use at home. I was getting around 4,000 people a day watching the lives, so a lot of brands got in touch asking me to talk about their products and OGX offered to send me some of its range. When I realised that most of my audience aren’t going to be spending £20 on a bottle of shampoo, yet were the very people asking for help, I agreed to try them. When I saw the huge range of products all PH balanced and with sulphate-free surfactants, at £6.99-£7.99 a bottle, it peaked my interest. I was able to send hundreds of OGX goodies out to my followers, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who came back to me saying how much they loved them. We shot 45 one-minute videos for OGX looking at common hair problems with the products to solve them. It’s a great match!”

I left the studio with a spring in my step confirming that indeed, it is difficult to beat the feeling of a fresh new do!

BEAUTY FEATURE 77

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON

Professional nutritionists from Wedding Wellness share their stress-beating tips

Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.

Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...

PRIORITISE SLEEP

One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.

MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT

Exercise is great for physical health but

movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.

EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION

The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking

proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.

EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS

It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.

HONEYMOON NEWS 85

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
86

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 87

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

Kelly Andrews headed to

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.
