BAR BUOY LAUNCHES BOTTLED ESPRESSO MARTINI
The team behind Bar Buoy premium bottled cocktails has teamed up with fellow Devon businesses, Owens Coffee and TORS vodka to reveal its deliciously decadent Espresso Martini (15% ABV). Bar Buoy’s Espresso Martini is expertly crafted with Dartmoor-based TORS vodka, coffee liqueur, Owens organic cold brew espresso and sugar syrup. The tasty rich aroma captures the heady scent of freshly roasted coffee.
To serve, chill the Bar Buoy Espresso Martini in the fridge, give it a good shake in a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice to achieve a thick foam, strain into a martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans –which are said to represent health, wealth and happiness.
Ria Ball, co-founder of Bar Buoy Cocktails, said: “All of our cocktails are made with premium spirits and high-quality ingredients. We have carefully chosen the businesses we’ve partnered with to create our range. They are all local producers from our home county of Devon as we believe their products are some of the best available anywhere, and we all share the same important values around sustainability.”
CREATE BESPOKE WEDDING DAY SPIRITS WITH SALCOMBE DISTILLING CO.
Salcombe Distilling Co., through their award-winning Salcombe Gin School and newly launched Salcombe Rum School, offer the opportunity for engaged couples to craft their very own unique spirit during a Salcombe Gin or Rum School lesson. From seasonal flavours to clever naming conventions, the chosen drink adds personalisation to the wedding day.
Guests to Salcombe Gin School or Salcombe Rum School take charge of a mini copper pot to develop and distil their very own 70cl bottle of gin or rum at Salcombe Distilling Co.’s award-winning waterside distillery in Salcombe. They can create their own recipe by choosing from an extensive range of botanicals supplied, or get imaginative and experiment by bringing their own. During distillation, visitors will sample and name their creations before bottling their chosen drink and placing it in a presentation box with a personalised bottle label.
A Gin School lesson is three hours long and is available from Tuesday to Saturday afternoons at 2 pm and Saturday mornings at 10 am. Salcombe Rum School runs every Thursday from 2 pm until 5 pm. A Gin or Rum School lesson for two people sharing a still is £160.
Salcombe Distilling Co. offers a service to distil more of the couple’s bespoke gin or rum. They visit www.salcombegin.com and fill out an online form listing their chosen botanicals and quantities noted from their previous Salcombe School visit. Salcombe Distilling Co.’s team of expert distillers then re-create two 70cl bottles of gin or rum (from £95). Higher quantities are available upon request.
Owens’ Roastery is based in South Devon in Ivybridge where customers can visit for a takeaway coffee or shop its range of whole bean or ground coffee, along with home brewing equipment.
Liz Orgill, marketing director of Owens Coffee, said: “We have been roasting Owens 100% Fairtrade and organic coffee since 2010. We are constantly looking for new opportunities to partner with local producers. We met Tim and Ria last summer whilst accepting our Muddy Stilettos Devon Sustainable Business Award and started to talk about how we could work together. We are delighted that Bar Buoy’s Espresso Martini now includes Owens Coffee’s fabulous cold brew, which you can make at home.”
Liz adds, “For this particular cold brew we’ve used our Baya blend, a darker roasted blend of our Arabica organic and Fairtrade coffee beans from Indonesia and Central America.”
Bar Buoy has a range of 12 delicious cocktails available in four different bottle sizes and with 100% plastic-free and recyclable packaging. The cocktails are Bramble, Cosmopolitan, Devon Stormy, Espresso Martini, Mai Tai, Margarita, Mojito, Negroni, Old Fashioned, Passion Fruit Martini, Raspberry Daiquiri and Seabird.
The bottles are priced at £4.95 for a 10cl single serve; £7.95 for a 20cl bottle (serves two), £18.95 for a 50cl bottle (serves five) and £32.95 for a one-litre bottle (serves 10). The cocktails are available from www.barbuoy.co.uk with free delivery over £40. Established in 2017, the Boardmasters Foundation was born out of the festival team’s desire to give back and support the culture and surrounding communities that are at the heart of the festival which takes place at Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay each year.
The recipients of the 2022 funds include the Schools Consent Project, Wave Women, Black Voices Cornwall, Cornwall Food Action, Newquay Train Station toilets, WGB Lifesaving Club, Newquay Boardriders, The Wave Project, Newquay Junior Academy and Watergate Bay Hotel. Many more recipients will be announced in the coming weeks and months.
CEO of Vision Nine and Boardmasters founder, Andrew Topham, said: “We’re proud of the £105,000 we’ve been able to raise across 2022 and hugely grateful to everyone who has contributed to the Foundation as a supporter of Boardmasters itself. Collectively, through this, we all give back to local organisations across Newquay, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth and across Cornwall and beyond. Since we established the Foundation in 2017, we have raised over
£310,000 and we continue to be ambitious in our objective of building on and growing the annual fundraising and charitable donations that the festival has already made year-on-year.”
Funds for the Boardmasters Foundation are raised each year at the Boardmasters festival. Applications are reviewed against the Foundation’s key pillars of focus - Community, Force for Good and Culture. Groups and organisations who are interested in applying to The Boardmasters Foundation should visit https://boardmasters.com where 2023 applications will open soon.

GREAT WESTERN GRILL AT BOVEY CASTLE REOPENS
After three years, the Great Western Grill at Bovey Castle is welcoming guests once again. The restaurant pays homage to the hotel’s history, having first opened as a hotel in 1930 by the Great Western Railway.
With roots planted in classical cookery, the award-winning 3 AA Rosette Great Western Grill, headed up by executive chef Mark Budd, features refined modern British comfort cooking and incorporates forgotten classics. The menu will consist of an á la carte option offering traditional favourites, meats, grills, steaks, house specials, fish and shellfish. From dressed Brixham crab salad to red wine braised oxtail cottage pie and poached native lobster with truffle macaroni cheese, this menu is sure to impress the guests. The popular Afternoon Tea is offered in the Lounge and Terrace areas and a Sunday Lunch menu will also be relaunched.
The grand opening of the grill wouldn’t be complete without a new Champagne Bar, offering an exclusive drinks list plus caviar and oysters.
The restaurant respects the glamour of the Art Deco origins and echoes of a bygone era. Bovey Castle offers rooms from £239 per night, based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis, www.boveycastle.com

DEVONIA WATER IS NOW AVAILABLE AT THE LUXURIOUS BOVEY CASTLE
Sustainable Devon spring water company Devonia is now available at Bovey Castle and will be served in the hotel bedrooms, restaurants and the bar, as well as in conference rooms for events. Set in 275 acres of countryside, Bovey Castle – which is the flagship of the Eden Hotel Collection – has 60 bedrooms, 22 lodges, an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts and an Elan Spa, complete with art deco swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and a dedicated Gentlemen’s Quarter.
The hotel’s Great Western restaurant, which holds 3 AA Rosettes for its culinary excellence, is overseen by talented head chef Mark Budd, who also manages the hotel’s casual dining option, Smith’s Brasserie.
Devonia water owner Neil Graham said, “We are delighted to be working with the stunning Bovey Castle to fulfil all their bottled water needs. It’s great to see yet another Devon business working to improve its sustainability. There’s never been a more important time to be considerate and mindful of the environment.”
Lorenzo Fassio, Bovey Castle’s deputy general manager, said, “Bovey Castle, and the entire Eden Hotel Collection, are taking great strides forward in sustainability. We understand the importance of businesses to be more environmentally responsible. We already ensure we source local produce and recycle wherever possible. Stocking Devonia Water allows us to take our efforts another step further and introduce ‘reuse’, and we’re delighted to be able to work with Neil.”
Devonia is the only spring water company in the South of England with a business model centred around continuously reusing glass bottles. Over the 18 years that the company has been up and running, it has saved a staggering 163 tonnes of glass from going to landfill, by collecting and reusing its water bottles from hotels, pubs, cafes, restaurants, special events and private customers across Devon.
Since the start of 2022, Devonia has sold 336,000 bottles of water and reused an impressive 285,000, which is a re-use rate of 90%. Washing and refilling the bottles uses just 6% of the energy required to recycle glass, reducing CO2 by 94%. It doesn’t generate any plastic pollution that would ultimately go into the world’s oceans.
Devonia’s water is bottled at source from a spring that bubbles up on the edge of a meadow near the villages of Beeson and Beesands, less than a mile from the sea. Available in both still and sparkling and in 330ml or 750ml bottles, the water has a natural soft taste that’s proven to be incredibly popular with customers.
As well as being a sustainable business, Devonia supports the Dartmoor Rescue Group’s Ashburton team, of which Neil Graham has been a full member for years. By purchasing and enjoying Devonia water, customers are also supporting the incredible work of the mountain rescue team.
This year, Devonia Water is also sponsoring the South West Coast Path Association Trailblazer Walk during its 50th anniversary year. Neil Graham has a deep-rooted passion and commitment to sustainability and the environment and a love for the coast path. Plus, Devonia’s bottling plant is in very close proximity to the Beesands stretch of the path. Neil said, “The coastal path has been impacted hugely over the years by climate change and it is one of the many reasons why I choose to run my business sustainably.”

ADAM HANDLING’S UGLY BUTTERFLY WINS
THE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AWARD AND CELEBRATES WITH A NEW COCKTAIL MENU
Chef Adam Handling’s bar in St. Ives recently won the Sustainable Practices Award at the CLASS Bar Awards 2023, solidifying Ugly Butterfly as one of the UK’s leading sustainable bars. The prestigious award recognises the bar’s commitment to sustainable and zerowaste practices and its efforts to help others to do the same.
Demonstrating their commitment to quality local produce and sustainable practices, Ugly Butterfly has recently launched a new cocktail menu that’s available now. Illustrated by bar manager, Connor Rainsford, and headed up by the newly promoted bar director of the Adam Handling Group, Josh Linfitt, the menu has been crafted with seasonal ingredients from local growers such as the Eden Project and Pasha’s Patch, bringing together local products, food waste and foraged ingredients to create unique and delicious concoctions.
Each of the cocktails is beautifully presented, with 80% of the list available free from alcohol, alongside an entire page dedicated to alcohol-free options which the team have paired with mixers. The new cocktails include ‘Drop sails, knot nets’, which unlock the flavours from ordinarily discarded banana skins by turning them into a banana cordial. This is stirred down with an in-house made pandan liqueur, utilising pandan harvested from The Eden Project to provide flavours that would usually need to be imported but, growing in the microclimate at The Eden Project, can be described as ‘local’. The vodka-based ‘Modern Dandy’ is another new drink, which utilises waste popcorn syrup and spent coffee, and served with a Cornish tartan bow tie. The Modern Dandy is sprayed with tobacco air, to enhance the rich scent of the beverage.
It’s not just the drinks themselves that reduce waste but even the vessels in which the drinks are served. For the Overhead cocktail, the team worked with talented local artist, Gemma Lessinger, and the incredible surfboard shaper, Brad Rochfort, to create a cup from waste surfboard material to protect glassware and ultimately reduce the energy required to recycle any broken glass.
Josh Linfitt, the bar director for the Adam Handling Group, commented: “We’re over the moon to have won. Knowing all the hard work, effort and time that was put into this bar and its menus means it feels pretty amazing! Connor and the team have taken the mission of Sustainable, Local, and Luxury and run with it.”
Delicious local and sustainable ingredients sourced from growers, farmers and fishermen across Cornwall have also been packed into the restaurant’s seven-course tasting menu with dishes including scallops, squash and chilli; asparagus, anchovies and nasturtium; and Guinea fowl, wild garlic and lemon thyme. There’s also a smaller five-course tasting menu available, with a new dish of Hogget, jersey royal and peas, as well as delicious new snacks including cauliflower and seaweed tart and mackerel tartare. The Food Fight dessert is currently on both menus, as seen in Adam’s recent appearance on BBC’s Great British Menu, which won him the title of ‘Champion of Champions 2023’.
Every part of the Adam Handling Group is deeply rooted in sustainability and Ugly Butterfly is no exception, serving zero-waste dishes and drinks, following its core ethos, ‘Sustainable. Local. Luxury’. With breathtaking views of the Carbis Bay shoreline, the luxury St. Ives bar plays host to an ever-growing list of creative solutions to minimise food waste without compromising on quality, using a multitude of innovative techniques to preserve ingredients so that they can be used beyond their season, utilising anything unused in the kitchen in the bar, and vice versa.
Adam Handling, chef and owner of the Adam Handling Restaurant Group, commented: ‘I’m honoured and proud of my Ugly Butterfly legends for winning this award. It’s something we’re all passionate about and I’m so excited to showcase the creativity and talent of Josh, Connor and the entire Ugly Butterfly team in their creation of an experience as close to zero waste as possible.’
The new five-course tasting menu is priced at £100 per person, with an optional wine pairing at £95 per person, or £135 per person for the premium wine pairing, and £1250 for opulence pairing (six people plus). The seven-course tasting menu is priced at £135 per person, with an added £120 per person for matching wine, £185 per person for matching premium wine, and £1550 for opulence pairing (six people plus).
To book, visit www.uglybutterfly.co.uk
The Ugly Butterfly is located at the Carbis Bay Estate where couples can get married on the beach. Twelve separate areas of the estate are licensed for ceremonies, including the wedding hut perched on the white sand; an outdoor spa garden pavilion; beautiful function suites located inside the main house, and the cosy coastal inn located on-site called the Gannet. From classic to quirky, small and intimate to grand and lavish, weddings are bespoke.

GREEN MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF JEFFREY ROBINSON’S NEW HYPER-SUSTAINABILITY PUB OPENS IN CORNWALL
Jeffrey Robinson, one of the UK’s first chefs to have attained a green Michelin star, has announced the opening of his new Cornish outpost – Harbour House.
Set on the waterfront in the historic village of Flushing, on the South Cornish coast, Harbour House, scheduled to open this summer will be a pub that’s dedicated to creating and achieving new levels of hyper-sustainability in the hospitality industry.
For the past few years, Jeffrey, along with his wife Caroline has helmed the New Yard Restaurant located on the Lizard Peninsula in rural southwest Cornwall. The new pub establishment in Flushing marks a distinct evolution for the historic waterfront property, formerly known as The Seven Stars.
The village of Flushing is set on the Penryn River, directly across from Falmouth, offering the perfect place where a hospitality business can thrive but be underpinned with not only environmental but social accountability, a foundation Jeffrey believes is essential if you wish to market yourself as ‘sustainable’.
The establishment’s new name: Harbour House honours the long history of marine trading in Flushing, its seafaring traditions and the building’s former use as board and lodging for Dutch shipping crews. The free house property is currently being stripped and reshaped, releasing previously unmet potential space and storytelling layers as they go.
Jeffrey and the team will be serving pub snacks and small plates, with an array of dishes that showcase the freshest produce from the surrounding sea, rivers, fields and gardens. Daily producers and suppliers will include New Dawn Traders, Sailor’s Creek Shellfish and Soul Food Farm, an organic, regeneratively led market garden. All cooking at Harbour House will be over coals from Tom Kemp of Working Woodlands Cornwall, the only eco-sustainable supplier in the entire country, who use local coppice sourced from surrounding woods.
Harbour House will also pour the very best of hyper-local beers from Penryn’s Verdant Brewer, Lacuna, who is making headways with the local sourcing of their hops. Cornish-made gins and spirits will be supplied from Loveday, Pocket Full of Stones and other local producers. Jeffrey has a key relationship with David Berwick from St Ives Cider who made their cider for New Yard, one that was up for the World Cider Awards and will now be doing the same for Harbour House.
The wine list has been carefully curated using minimal intervention, biodynamic and organic wines with Ben Mudditt from Wanderlust Wines. Ben has been working with Jeffrey for many years and understands his food style and what wines pair impeccably with this cuisine.
Pub rooms, all with charming sea views, will be added upstairs in the coming months with these expected to open in winter 2023, making this an ideal place for a mini-moon.
Cornish-born Jeffrey was one of the first chefs in the world to achieve a Green Michelin Star, one of the most sought-after and forward-thinking awards to be recognised for. In addition, Jeffrey has received three rosettes and numerous other awards for creativity, innovation and sustainable practices. Jeffrey led the philosophy, the standards and the team at New Yard, finding and training a talented team just as dedicated as he was to serving food from their walled garden, food grown using permaculture and no dig methods, alongside truly local line-caught fish and pasture fed Cornish meats.
Changing the restaurant’s approach to how they sold their experience was a bold move. As they grew a significant amount of the food themselves, they worked with small, independent,
hyper-local producers who provided them with what was abundant on that particular day. This meant that they were unable to give advance notice of what the New Yard dining room would be enjoying, until 7 pm when everyone was already seated.
But by putting their faith in the local fisherman and farmers, and in the soil they grew from, the New Yard team brought their customers on the journey with them. With the help of wonderful talks and explanations from the people who created what they were eating, New Yard gained renown as a passionate, educational dining experience.
Jeffrey Robinson reflects, “At New Yard, it was not only the organic, regenerative farming methods used by ourselves and our suppliers, but it was also the move of taking away the menus in 2020 that made the difference. This forced creativity into my team and me every single day. We had to come in ready to re-create an experience that was not available yesterday, that wouldn’t be available tomorrow – but that was created for this very one lunch and dinner service.”
Jeffrey says, “I can’t wait to throw open the doors of Harbour House and to bring all of our learnings with us to this utterly idyllic, shoreline pub setting. We’ll be using produce from the top of the hill in Flushing, seafood harvested right outside the front door and imports delivered by sailboat. By allowing forward-thinking farmers from Cornwall to dictate my menus, I will be honouring how previous generations sourced and traded ingredients from this very location. We’ll be offering a dining experience that is my signature but in an affordable way. This means we can continue to support the local community, and local producers and also means we can create year-round positions for my invaluable and dedicated team.”
Jeffrey continues, “’Sustainable’ is an umbrella term that perhaps isn’t policed as much as it should be. But for me and my team, true sustainability is our daily graft and craft, and it’s evident in every ingredient, and every single decision we make as a business. We will be deeply applying ourselves from the minute we open the doors, ensuring Harbour House is at the forefront of the industry for years to come.”

OGO AT BEDRUTHAN HOTEL & SPA OPENS
The Scandi-inspired retreat Bedruthan Hotel & Spa is thrilled to announce its new restaurant concept, Ogo (translating to ‘Cave’ in Cornish) which is inspired by the coastline’s natural bounty. Menus emphasise a commitment to delivering high-quality seasonal ingredients. From beach foraging for edible seaweeds and berries from the clifftops to working with local fishermen for their daily catch, Ogo showcases the best hyper-local produce in the region.
Located within Bedruthan, a hotel and spa in Mawgan Porth, Ogo takes the place of the former restaurant The Herring. Head chef George Richardson’s passion for showcasing the best of Cornish produce is reflected through partnerships with handpicked local suppliers and farms who share his commitment to sustainable practices. Focussing on in-season produce, the daily changing menu will vary according to the season and retain a focus on provenance: from what the boats bring in each day along the South coast, to foraged ingredients from the surrounding countryside.
George Richardson tells us, “We are pleased to bring Bedruthan’s principles of sustainability and provenance to life on the plate at Ogo, and delight diners’ palates with authentic flavours
that represent the spirit of the community.”
Highlights from the dinner menu include steamed Cornish brill with champagne, mussels and sea herbs; and Mora Farm confit courgette with basil, olive oil and tempura flower. With the choice of dining outside on the dune-side terrace, diners can share smaller dishes combining ingredients from Cornwall’s coast, gardens, and fields, such as native oyster with house-fermented hot sauce and pickled green chilli; grilled hand-dived scallop with wild garlic butter and crispy sourdough; and pickled Cornish mackerel with Mora Farm rhubarb and elderflower. All dishes are perfectly paired with a selection of organic wines, including locally produced Polgoon Pinot Noir Rosé and Trevibban Mill Harlyn.
For an indulgent afternoon tea experience, the restaurant’s chefs have created their own take on the much-loved traditional Cornish afternoon tea, offering savoury options such as smoked salmon and crème fraîche on a beetroot tin loaf and cucumber on white pain de mie. This is followed by a tempting sweet course of blueberry, lemon and white chocolate macaron and local strawberry and elderflower choux buns, with a choice of local fizz and teas.

Jenna and David’s big day at Matthews Hall in Topsham enjoyed a bright blue and green colourful theme

Jenna and David Spelman married on 20th August 2022 at St Margaret’s Church Topsham, followed by a reception at Matthews Hall, also in Topsham.
Jenna and David met through an online dating app during lockdown. “ I lived in Devon and David lived in Hampshire, so meeting up meant finding creative ways of dating whilst obeying the rules at the time,” Jenna tells us. “This involved outdoor walks along the Dorset coast! Thankfully, we enjoyed our first dates during late summer, so the nice weather made things much easier. We both have a similar silly sense of humour and share a love of music, so we had so much to talk about and the hours spent together were filled with plenty of laughter.”
David proposed on the 27th of February 2022. “We had been dating since September 2021 and our first date was David visiting Devon and us enjoying a walk in Topsham,” Jenna says. “On the day that David proposed, I had just recovered from covid so he decided to keep things simple and romantic by replicating our first date. We headed out for a walk in Topsham and he took me to our favourite spot before getting down on one knee and popping the question. There were plenty of happy tears, phone calls to our family and some cheering and shrieking from my sisters! David had arranged for us to have dinner out in Topsham that evening.”
SETTING THE SCENE
Jenna and David wanted a relaxed, rustic and fun feel to their special day, so chose local venues that reflected their personalities. “A church wedding was important to us both, as well as meeting the vicar beforehand which made us feel well supported by the church in the lead-up to the wedding ceremony,” Jenna tells us. “Our vicar was Reverend Tony Raven who crafted and curated our ceremony with such kindness. We added in things that were important to us, like having a live band playing during it, and David playing the guitar and leading the congregation in one of the songs with the band. The confetti throw coming out of the church was my favourite moment - I don’t remember a time when I felt so happy, and seeing so many beaming faces of the people that we both love gathered around us!”
The couple’s reception was at the local village hall, Matthews Hall in Topsham, which their wedding coordinators transformed in just a few hours. They suspended lanterns and lights across the hall and had set up the glasses of prosecco ready for when their guests arrived ahead of them. “My sister-in-law has a white BMW convertible which we travelled to our reception in,” Jenna tells us. “It was fun to be announced as the new Mr and Mrs!”
Jenna and David chose to have a barbecue. “We looked at many catering options but decided that a barbecue would suit the informal vibe that we wanted to achieve, and allowed our guests to choose from plenty of food options. We used a company called Spitting Pig Devon and their mac and cheese was particularly delicious.” they tell us. “This was followed by the speeches which involved plenty of laughter and stories!”
The couple also enjoyed a four-tiered wedding cake with

a fruit cake layer, a chocolate tier, a lemon drizzle one and a Victoria sponge layer. “My friend Jo and her daughter Grace made it and decorated it with delicious vanilla butter icing, adding a rustic personalised sign on the top and some real flowers from our florist that cascaded down the side. It looked, and tasted, fantastic!”
Jenna and David’s table plan was laid out in a U-shape which suited the hall. Their handwritten place names fitted in with their rusitc-inspired theme and their table names were after beaches in Hampshire, Devon and Cornwall reflecting the three counties that the couple have lived in, all presented on a wooden easel.
“For our centrepieces, we chose jars of wildflowers put together by our wedding coordinators with flowers that our florist provided,” Jenna tells us. “We chose a mix of vandela roses, hydrangea, carnations, chrysanthemums, gerberas, gladioli, tiny daisies, crocosmia, craspedia, fountain grass, sierra setaria and hypericum which all looked great gathered together.”
LOOKING THE PART
“The wedding plans came together so quickly, and not having much lead time to order a wedding dress in the normal way, and being plus size as well, meant that some research was needed,” Jenna tells us, “But again, our plans fell in to place easily and I purchased an off-the-peg dress and took it home that same day. It was a champagne colour with a boho feel and I loved it.”
David wore a tailored blue suit with a grey checked waistcoat and a pair of brown Dr Marten boots. “Our groomsmen wore matching blue suits with red ties (or bow ties for our nephews) and blue waistcoats,” he tells us.
The couple’s bridesmaids wore green dresses and carried pretty posies of brightly coloured flowers. “My eldest nieces and sisters were my bridesmaids, so getting ready with them on the wedding morning was so special,” Jenna tells us. “My three nephews wore matching waistcoats, bow ties and trousers, and all looked adorable! The star of the show was my little niece who was two years old and loved the chance to dress up for the day!”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
Jenna and David booked a ceilidh band to entertain their guests during the evening. “This was so much fun, it was a way for everybody to get involved and enjoy themselves,” they tell us. Even those who weren’t interested in dancing were still able to watch and laugh at the rest of us attempting to keep up!”
“I got my best man to join me in performing some songs on the guitar during our reception which resulted in a late-night acoustic set,” David says. “I also played a song during the ceremony too, which was a special moment and Jenna was very proud!”

TOP TIP: “Everybody says it, but during the day and night before, make sure that you let go of all of the planning and tension that may have built up during it. Thankfully, our amazing wedding coordinators ensured that we could do this because we knew that things were in safe hands with them. This made the day so much more enjoyable, and we both truly feel like we can remember so much of the day because of this – we have such amazing memories.” – Jenna and David

Cornwall
Georgia and Jack’s coastal wedding enjoyed Polurrian on the Lizard as the stunning backdrop
Images courtesy of Jake Timms
and Jack started their love story via the online dating app Bumble in September 2022. “I sent the first message and two days later, we were on our first date in a restaurant in Falmouth,” Georgia tells us. “It was a dinner date that lasted six hours which was the start of our romance - Jack and I have been inseparable since! From the moment we met, we both knew that it was the beginning of our lives together. After our second date, we both deleted the dating app because we knew that we wouldn’t need it again. After a few weeks, Jack met my entire extended family and I’d visited his parents with him in Devon.”
The couple became engaged after having gone ring shopping together. “Jack wanted to know that I would love the ring because I would be wearing it for the rest of my life,” Georgia tells us. “He was planning on waiting a while after we had purchased it to propose, but he got down on one knee after
dinner one evening while I was staying with him at his base at RNAS Culdrose (he is in the Royal Navy). It wasn’t what he had originally planned but it was perfect – it was very romantic and spontaneous!”
Here, Georgia tells us all about their wedding at the Cornish coastal hotel Polurrian on the Lizard which was decorated with a cream and green colour theme. She says “We started planning our wedding just eight weeks before the big day itself. We became engaged on 26th June 2022, and we agreed that we’d like to get married in 2023 because we were in the process of buying a house first. However, with Jack qualifying as an Observer the following summer, we were never going to be sure if he would be home or away on the ship, so we both decided that rather than planning a wedding and not knowing, in August 2023, we decided to get married that October!”
Georgia and Jack Leakey married on 29th October 2022 at Polurrian on the Lizard in Cornwall.
33 REAL WEDDINGS
With Jack being based at RNAS Culdrose, we had spent plenty of time walking along the cliffs nearby and having picnics not far from the Polurrian on the Lizard hotel. We chose the hotel as our wedding venue because it’s in a beautiful location and is a fantastic representation of how wonderful Cornwall is!
With just eight weeks to book a venue, we were pushed for time and choices, but when we discovered that the team at Polurrian on the Lizard had availability on a date that worked for us, we were delighted!
For the wedding, we wanted to keep everything simple and natural and let the beautiful setting of the hotel and location do the talking.
We had rustic wood décor, glass candle lanterns and a beautiful wooden archway draped with fabric that was used in the ceremony and also framed the entrance to the wedding breakfast.

“During our wedding breakfast, in typical Royal Navy style, the best man was handed place names that had writing on the back of them. This is typical for a military dinner so Jack and I knew to take our place names before anyone could get them. At the end of the speeches, they were read out to everyone. We had one officer perform an Irish dance, another singing a sea shanty song and my dad singing a hymn.” — Georgia and Jack
Keeping with the simple, timeless theme, we chose a lightly-iced white cake decorated with real flowers in white and green. Jenna, the cake designer and owner of Jenna’s Signature Bakes did such an amazing job. I already knew about her beautiful cakes because she lived in the house opposite my parents.
Jack’s cousin baked us plenty of goodies for our wedding which included cupcakes decorated with green marbled fondant and our initials and wedding date. They were amazing and tasted delicious
“We were both so excited and nervous at the same time. We were looking forward to enjoying eight weeks worth of hard work and planning!”
We made our own pick ‘n’ mix sweetie bags for our favours which were personalised with our names and the wedding date.

I chose two different styles of dresses for the bridesmaids because they were varied in age, height, shape and size. The dresses were sage green to match our theme. They also wore diamanté sashes to match mine.
We hired a DJ for our evening entertainment because we both knew that we wanted to party and dance the night away! It was such a great success, the dancefloor was never empty and the party went on until the DJ finished just after midnight.
Our photographer, Jake, and his assistant made the day run so smoothly! His assistant helped me into my dress when all of my bridesmaids were frantically getting ready. Later in the day, we were taken out on to the cliffs for our couple portraits just as the sun was setting which was perfectly timed. Jack and I were able to be together and take in the day before getting back to get the party started!

TOP TIP: “Don’t panic – weddings can take years to plan but they can also only take a week. What matters on the day is that you’re marrying the one person that you love. Relax, let the day pan out and don’t forget to enjoy it all because it won’t happen again!” — Georgia and Jack

Felicity and Henry Munns married on 9th April 2022 at Fowey Harbour Hotel in Cornwall.
Felicity
and Henry met online in early June 2015. “I had been on two other dates and wasn’t holding out much hope for the next one,” Felicity tells us. “I met Henry after being impressed by the fact that he was a chef (I hate cooking), and he liked how I was up for doing fun activities - it turned out to be third time lucky for me! We had a great first date, chatting over drinks at Lockyers Quay in Plymouth and agreed to meet two days later for breakfast because Henry was about to start working away in Dawlish. The next couple of months were spent enjoying longdistance dating and meeting up on days off before settling into being a proper couple once Henry was back at university in September.”
Henry proposed in August 2020 by creating a fantastic pirate-themed treasure hunt. “It started with a letter from a real-life pirate queen ancestor and included clues that had me running all over the house and garden,” Felicity says. “He had a life-like treasure map made of sand and a set of coordinates that led us to Par Sands Beach near St. Austell. He had me looking around the beach for treasure before going down on one knee in a secluded spot in the dunes whilst I was distracted looking through my engraved brass telescope from a previous clue! The answer was yes, once I had recovered the power of speech and got over the initial surprise - I had no idea it was coming!”
SETTING THE SCENE
Felicity and Henry had their hearts set on a coastal venue in Cornwall because enjoying Cornish day trips by the sea is one of their favourite things to do. “We wanted a sea view and décor that tied in with our tropical theme,” Felicity tells us. “Once we walked into the ceremony room at Fowey Harbour Hotel, we both smiled at each other because we knew it was perfect! It was light and airy, the view over the estuary was stunning and there was plenty of space outside for gorgeous photos and for the children to play.”
Henry made the couple’s table plan using a driftwood frame filled with white sand and Felicity wrote the guest names on fake monstera leaves to match the tropical theme.” It also doubled up as our welcome sign and the bridesmaids helped to switch the leaves around after the ceremony and before the wedding breakfast,” she tells us. “Our tables were named after Latin names and presented on large tropical shells that were placed on each table. I wrote each place name on a mussel shell and attached them to the ribbons on the wedding favours.”
As their centrepieces, Felicity and Henry chose a white cake stand for each table with the top covered in monstera leaves and finished with a large tropical shell. A variety of coloured orchid and lily heads were scattered across the table which coordinated with their choice of flowers. “We had a tropical selection of artificial orchids, calla lilies and peonies in shades of purple, pale green, white and pink,” Felicity says. “We chose faux flowers so that we could keep my bouquet and Henry’s buttonhole after the wedding and I also had a sixpence from my mum in a charm holder gifted from Henry attached to a white ribbon wrapped around the handle of my cascading bouquet. Our beautiful bridesmaids carried smaller round versions and both of our mums had a corsage each which included a white calla lily and a purple orchid with a ribbon.”
The couple’s favours were scallop shells (dived for by Henry’s brother), spray-painted rose gold on the outside, and filled with a tiny bottle of rum with a personalised label and sealed in gold wax. “These were in addition to a tiny treasure chest filled with white and blue personalised M&Ms, all tied up with white organza ribbon,” Felicity tells us. “We also had a treasure chest gift table decorated with white petals, empty rum bottles with lights inside and a globe guestbook. The gift table also had a

driftwood tree on it with a fishing net that was threaded with fairylights and decorated with paper parrots,” Felicity says. “The aisle was flanked by white petals, glass vases painted blue with scallop shells attached and driftwood logs (collected by us), both with artificial candles in. The driftwood frame on the gift table was also made by Henry as a mini version of the seating plan.”
Felicity and Henry’s guests were given a Luna Colada cocktail as their welcome drink along with canapés. “The wedding breakfast was afternoon tea, the drink to toast was white sangria and our guests were treated to a selection of Cornish pasties for the evening catering,” Felicity says. “The afternoon tea included a slice of wedding cake which we cut on entering the room before we had the speeches. It was a three-tier pineapple and coconut sponge cake with passionfruit; mango curd and buttercream, decorated in plain white icing with artificial tropical flowers to match those in my bouquet.”
LOOKING THE PART
Felicity wore a strapless fishtail gown with a sweetheart neckline by Mori Lee. “Henry and I had both worked hard to lose weight and get fit in the run-up to our wedding so I knew that I wanted a fitted style to show off my figure,” she tells us. “Originally, I wasn’t keen on having a lace dress or any sleeves, but Lauren at Abella Bridal Boutique in Plymouth where I purchased the dress from suggested my chosen style as one to try on. I asked her if we could style it with the sleeves tucked in and as soon as I saw it without them, I got emotional as I told my maid-of-honour and my mum that I’d found my dress! I wore it with a floral-edged veil, again that Lauren suggested, with a pair of pale blue stilettos, silver drop orchid earrings and white orchid hair pins.”
Henry wore a white shirt and powder-blue suit. “He chose a bespoke silk waistcoat instead of having the original matching waistcoat to the suit along with an ivory floral tie,” Felicity says. “Our groomsmen had the same suits as Henrys with blue waistcoats and ties. My father wore the same but with a floral tie and they all wore a pair of tan shoes. “Henry’s buttonhole included a purple orchid and white calla lily, whereas the groomsmen just had the white calla lily.”
The couple’s bridesmaids wore chiffon, empire-line dresses in pale blue with embellished mesh detailing at the top and a matching pale blue chiffon shawl. “They were each given a starfish hairpin for their half-up, half-down hairstyles and carried a smaller round version of my bouquet,” Felicity says.
The couple’s two miniature dachshunds were walked down the aisle by their maid-of-honour. “My mum had made the dogs their own little bridesmaids’ dresses which were white satin on the top half with a white chiffon skirt and a pale blue organza ribbon and bow around the middle,” Felicity says. “She also made them a matching white ribbon lead each decorated with blue bows.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
Felicity and Henry had a steel band playing for their guests during the wedding breakfast which they had kept as a surprise for everyone - even Felicity’s parents who helped organise and pay for the wedding. “They were a fantastic addition and brought the tropical theme to life,” Felicity says. “We also hired a magic mirror which our guests had great fun with, dressing up and using the props and taking photos to go in the photo guestbook that the company provided. The team from West Country Photobooths where we hired it from were very friendly and helpful which encouraged people to relax and enjoy it.”

INTRODUCING PINK LEMONS
Pink Lemons is a family business based in Cornwall, run by Leah and her husband Paul. The brand started as a small store in Bristol and from there it has evolved over the years. The couple decided to relocate their stores to Fowey and Padstow in Cornwall for a healthier and more natural way of life.
The Pink Lemons brand is inspired by the Cornish lifestyle and a love of India. It started with drawings on the kitchen table, creating sustainable collections. Now the brand is based in a garden studio overlooking the forest, which helps it to be as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. The brand’s ethos is all about femininity, colour, organic fabrics and being kind to nature.

51 SUSTAINABILITY
Eco-friendly wedding venues
At Mount Pleasant Eco Park, the team re-thinks how weddings can be sustainable and affordable. They do not allow single-use decorations and they encourage couples to reuse items where possible. This can be done in many ways; through hiring from the numerous decor and wedding stylists based locally, or by purchasing pieces that are then re-purposed for use after the big day. Flowers are often sourced from local growers rather than abroad which eliminates milage. Roots Press is the on-site designer and printer that uses eco-friendly soy inks to print stationery allowing couples to make sustainable choices.
Canteen was welcomed on-site last year as the new cafe. The team have extensive wedding catering experience and showcase colourful and vibrant plant-based dishes. They have a strong ethos of sourcing local ingredients, with one of their main suppliers being from the on-site garden, Community Roots who deliver produce by wheelbarrow from their freshly picked harvest for Canteen to create seasonal menus.
The Mount Pleasant Eco Park wedding venue is forever striving to lessen its impact on the earth, collecting rainwater for flushing toilets to running much of the site from solar and wind power. All food and plant waste is used as compost to feed the indigenous plants and wildflower meadows and couples have the option to compost any floral arrangements after their wedding.
Many of the handmade Shepherd Huts and Eco Pods on-site are solely powered by solar panels with compost toilets which also are used to feed the plants. They have living roofs to nestle the buildings into the coastal landscape within this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty while supporting insects and many other animals.
Mount Pleasant Eco park offers outdoor ceremonies in the Amphitheatre created from recycled tyres and surplus earth. The cob courtyard has become the perfect setting for canapés and reception drinks, with views stretching across to an old Cornish engine house. This area is embraced by a hand-built earth wall with curves to match the rolling hills in the distance of St Agnes.

Located down a private lane in Tiverton, Devon is Middle Coombe Farm, set against a picturesque backdrop of the rolling Devon countryside with hedgerows frothing with colour.
Sustainable weddings come naturally here. Founded more than 40 years ago when owners Angela and her husband Tim took over the family estate, they established the ecological philosophy that still runs through every inch of the 400-acre estate and every wedding today.
Just a handful of weddings are held on the estate each year to ensure the minimum impact on the landscape and nature has time to rest and recover. These exclusive weddings have full use of the woodlands, organic meadows, traditional cider barn and Grade II listed farmhouse that provide unlimited inspiration whether couples choose a barn, farm or woodland wedding – or a bit of everything!
At the heart of the woods is the ancient oak tree, standing for centuries this tree makes a perfect setting for a unique ceremony site under the branches. The wedding aisle is one of the woodland glades dappled with sunlight, music birds, bees and breeze. With the changing seasons, couples will be delighted with native plants and flowers – from the wood anemones and bluebells of spring through the blaze of autumn colours dancing in the woods to the winter wonderland of a crisp winter’s day.
In addition to the land, the licensed traditional cider barn is characterful and full of charm and is complete with a cider press over which nuptials can be made. The barn can be filled with vintage furnishings, wildflowers and bunting for a simple rustic-chic theme. During the summer months, there is also a beautiful marquee for couples to put their stamp on and bring the outdoors inside. There’s also a private glamping hut nestled into the meadow providing the perfect accommodation for the first night of married life.
Accommodation is provided in the Grade II-listed classic 17th-century farmhouse. Cited in Pevsner’s Buildings of England as a spectacular survivor of the era, the farmhouse still retains many of its original features including thatch, mullioned windows and Jacobean panelling fronted by the late medieval gatehouse that can only hint at the farmstead that once sat on the site. There’s also a sensitively converted barn to holf more wedding guests. A highlight is the solar-heated pool and hot tub.

THE SUSTAINABLE WEDDING PLANNER
Wedding planner Jenny Dell from Anomaly Weddings designs, plans and manages beautiful weddings that are also imperfectly eco. “What I mean by imperfectly eco is simply doing the best that couples can do with the tools they have at that precise moment whilst thinking about how things can improve going forward,” Jenny tells us.
Jenny has woven this ethos into her business in several ways, such as ensuring that the majority of her meetings are over the phone or online rather than travelling. She buys pre-loved items where possible that can be fixed, maintained and upcycle to look new, and ensures that any new items are perfect for multiple use or recyclable, using no single-use plastic items. Jenny has also purposefully aligned herself with other imperfectly eco-conscious suppliers and those that choose to do the right thing over the easy thing. She supports local suppliers in Devon and the South where possible, reducing her carbon footprint.
Jenny expertly styled our Festival of Love shoot in this issue at Hawke
Barn, pictured here and also seen on page 47, collaborating with a selection of hand-picked local businesses that also have the imperfectly eco-philosophy and photographed by www.freeformimages.co.uk. The macrame props were homemade and the tableware was all preloved.
Jenny believes in creating weddings that support the environment and are kind to the planet by using local farms that don’t use chemicals that harm nature. She also supports sustainable farming practices, encouraging plant-based eating and reducing meat intake.
Anomaly Weddings loves supporting charities, reducing waste, and donating items after weddings and events along with the best working practices, including handmade items that last a lifetime. Finally, Jenny is also an advocate for natural health, utilising the earth’s resources and using diet and lifestyle choices where possible for healing.

She has created these invitation sets using 100% recycled and beautifully textured seed paper which is tree-free and can be enjoyed and then planted. It’s handmade using traditional techniques, from 100% pre-consumer waste cotton which is biodegradable and then embedded with seeds and air-dried to give the seeds the best chance to germinate. The paper includes a mix of Sweet Alyssum, Common Poppy and Black Eyed Susan – these varieties have all been named by the RHS as ‘Plants for Pollinators’, because they are rich in nectar –attracting butterflies, bumble bees and other insects - and they do!
The signage is printed digitally and then mounted on to 4mm eco board - unlike other stationers, Laura doesn’t work with a Foamex inner,
but those made entirely of corrugated card and which is recyclable.
Except for signage, Laura’s beautiful, intricate wedding stationery is printed in-house and she uses a mix of three different eco-friendly papers. For printing, there’s a choice of premium white recycled card stock or plantable seed paper and recycled Kraft envelopes as standard (FSC-coloured envelopes are also available).
Within the production of her wedding stationery, every effort has been made to keep wastage to a minimum. Any offcuts or waste printed paper is in turn recycled, or shredded to create packaging and she also recycles all Canon ink cartridges for the benefit of a local charity where 97% of each ink cartridge is recycled into other products.
When you receive an order from Laura Likes, the packaging is 100% recyclable with no bubble wrap, plastic mailbags or polystyrene. Everything in and on the box can either be popped in the recycling or if the order has been packed in shredded seed paper, Laura encourages couples to plant it in their garden and support our pollinators!

Anna Briggs is the founder of award-winning The Cheeky Cake Company based in Plymouth, Devon. She’s seeing a trend for simple white iced cakes with a clean, sharp finish decorated with stunning sugar flowers, which take centre stage and are based on the bride’s bouquet. “These sugar flowers make a lovely keepsake after the wedding,” she tells us.

FLAVOURED CHEESES
Debbie and Nick Priestly are the owners of The West Country Cheese Co, an online shop based on the North Devon and Cornwall borders selling British and European cheese varieties. Debbie tells us that textured cheese wedding cakes are a feature this year. “Couples are looking for interesting cakes with differing textures and our Angel Cake is a great example, I love the tasty layers, rustic cheddar rind and wrinkled Wensleydale that this cake offers,” she says.
Debbie continues, “We’re also noticing an uplift in flavoured cheeses so we’ve created some half-and-half cakes, pictured below, combining two halves (and four
quarters on our larger cakes) of cheese together giving more choice.”
The varieties are all British cheeses, and the quarters on the bottom layer and halves on top provide 10 different kinds of cheese in one cake. The base layer offers four quarters of Quickes Cheddar; Vintage Cheddar; Devonshire Red and Quickes Oak-Smoked varieties.
The second tier provides half a Cornish Yarg and half a Quickes Mature; the third tier comprises 1kg of Cornish brie; the fourth is 1kg of Colston Bassett Stilton; the fifth tier is 250g of Tunworth Camembert and the top layer is a delicious small goats cheese.

Our wedding cakes of cheese can have two tasty halves at the base – one cheddar and one smoked.
Customers can mix and match halves, for example choosing a Caramelised Onion Cheddar and a White Stilton and Apricot variety, or a Wensleydale and Cranberry cheese and then build up different varieties from there.
THE WEDDING FEAST
Nicky and Greg are the co-owners of the Sharpham Dairy based in a beautiful valley overlooking the River Dart in South Devon offering artisan cheese made using milk from their own herd and local family farms. Nicky and Greg reveal how the perfect starting point for an evening wedding reception is delicious sharing feasts and grazing tables which are becoming increasingly popular. The Sharpham cheesemakers enjoy creating the tower of cheese as the table centrepiece, and with a range of ten kinds of cheese to choose from, all made in their South Devon-based dairy, plus guest cheddars and local blues available, there’s a wide variety of choice.
The expert team can also supply individual cheeses to form a modern buffet. Couples can add some variety with seaweed cheese – the Rustic with Dulse & Sea Lettuce is sure to be a talking point, and so is the deeply savoury Rustic with Chive & Garlic. The decadent triple-cream Elmhirst or a Cremet soft goat’s cheese are other ideal choices.
No table is complete without accompaniments. Sharpham has partnered with local Devon suppliers to create a range of delicious sourdough crackers and award-winning chutneys and jams which perfectly complement their cheese range - a brand-new Scotch Bonnet Chilli Jam is just about to launch this summer.
To create a gourmet grazing table assembly, always start with the cheeses and then add in charcuterie, lots of tasty fruit and colourful veg, a medley of crackers, plenty of chutneys and dips, and a range of bread varieties for a table bursting with flavour. Repeat down the table in a super-stylish display. Let’s eat cheese | 01803 732 600 | https://sharphamcheese.co.uk

KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE
How do I safely store my wedding dress for a long period after the big day?
Meet the expert: Giselle Hulme is the director of The Empty Box Company based in Tavistock, Devon, who has been creating handmade wedding dress boxes for 35 years.
Giselle says: With everyone feeling the pinch at the moment, couples are well aware of any extra costs for their wedding. But keeping their treasured memories alive is a priority, so storing the bridal gown, and other expensive accessories in handmade wedding boxes to preserve them and keep them in perfect condition for years to come is essential.
We often hear about clients who stored their wedding dresses in a wedding dress box many years ago and the gowns are now being worn by the daughter of the bride - with a few modern style alterations!
Our latest designs include a William Morris print (pictured) that was used in the latest series of the television series Bridgerton
Whether you’re thinking of keeping your dress or selling it, it’s an investment to keep it well-protected and prevent discolouration in a wedding dress box, and to prevent it from moth damage. We also sell all kinds of matching accessory boxes for your keepsakes, from shoes to headpieces, plus travel boxes if you’re getting married abroad with prices starting from just £45.

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
76
© James Rudland
a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

HONEYMOON NEWS 83
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. HONEYMOON REVIEW 85
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. Do not disturb
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
