Autumn glory

Ilove this time of year, perfect for taking time out from the wedding planning to relax and enjoy the great outdoors — with the first extra layer of clothing post-summer!

There’s plenty of wedding inspiration to be found all around us. East Anglia is blessed with glorious countryside, coastline, woods and forests, so why not grab your partner, pull on your wellies and head out for a good forage? The falling leaves and rich, berry shades of seasonal fruits are great for your big-day palette. Conkers, acorns, twigs, brambles and other finds can provide a wealth of natural decorative material too.

As well as seasonal inspiration, this issue is packed with all the latest trends and top tips for all things wedding related from bridal fashion and fabulous local venues to showstopping cakes created by some of the region’s finest from page 49. With the nation now in the grip of baking fever once again, here at County Weddings HQ we’re keeping Tuesday nights free for our weekly fix of cake triumphs and catastrophes courtesy of The Great British Bake Off #GBBO.

Now that Strictly Come Dancing is also back on the box, we know we’re on the countdown to Christmas.

Sadly, this is my last issue of Your East Anglian Wedding, but I will be leaving you in the good hands of our managing editor Danielle Harvey.

Keeeep dancing!

NEW WOODLAND CEREMONY SPACE

If you love the idea of walking up a tree-lined aisle under dappled sunshine to say ‘I do’, with birds singing in the trees overhead, this could be your dream come true. The new woodland ceremony glade at Alpheton Hall Barns in Suffolk is an idyllic spot for romantic al fresco weddings and you don’t need to worry if the weather’s bad as there’s always the beautiful Ceremony Barn as backup. The woodland glade includes a hand-crafted oak ceremony feature, completed in spring this year by owner Nic Willcocks, providing cover for the registrars, the happy couple and witnesses. There’s rustic, wooden bench seating too for 200 or more people, a ceremony table, power and sound system. Hundreds of native woodland bulbs and plants including anemones, bluebells and primroses have also been planted to create a carpet of colour in the years to come. For more information on weddings at Alpheton Hall Barns visit https://alpheton-hall-barns.co.uk and turn to our local venues feature on page 25.

Decorated with flowing silk drapes, twinkling fairylights, vintage ladders and hanging hoop lights it’s a magical setting for a celebration with up to 250 loved ones. The barn courtyard is ideal for the evening food and chill-out area, complete with covered cart-lodge bench seating and outdoor kitchen with woodfired pizza oven. There are two ‘quiet rooms’ too, including one for the little ones.

We love... the romantic wooded area surrounded by long grasses and wildflowers and a mown grass ‘heart’ perfect for the confetti run, drone shots and golden hour photographs.

Autumn GLORY

Becky and Ben’s big day was full of rustic, seasonal flare

Images courtesy of Hello Romance Photography

Becky and Ben met as teenagers while working at a bar together and were good friends until their lives took them in different directions and they lost touch. They got back in contact seven years ago and the relationship was rekindled. “After Ben ‘grafted’ for two years, as he would say, we both realised we wanted to be together, so we ended up giving things a go,” says Becky.

Ben proposed while they were on holiday in Mexico. He booked a romantic private dinner on the beach with their own personal waiter. Becky didn’t suspect a thing at the time, not even when Ben suggested they should dress up for the occasion. It was only after their delicious

three-course meal, when Ben asked the waiter to take a photo of them, that the penny dropped. Becky recalls, “As we stood up and he passed him his phone, he took my hand and got down on one knee. I immediately started crying and missed most of what he said but luckily we have a lovely video of the whole thing that the waiter captured for us that we’ll treasure forever.”

They tied the knot on 16th October 2021 at The Tudor Barn Belstead in Suffolk and opted for an autumnal theme with seasonal burgundy, cream and burnt orange accents. Read on for Becky’s account of the big day…

REAL WEDDINGS 31

“I knew I wanted an autumn-themed wedding as it’s my favourite season. I love the colours, crisp mornings and crunching of leaves and I was excited to bring that to life.”

The Tudor Barn was the first venue we looked at and from the moment wearrived, it started ticking boxes. It suited our numbers perfectly, the staff werereally helpful and the grounds were beautiful, so when we left, we cancelled allour other viewings!

When the bridal consultant Emma-Lee brought out the Nora by Ronald Joyce, I absolutely fell in love. It’s true what they say – when you know, you know! I said ‘yes’ to the dress and it was ordered that day!

We had a classic 1938 Rolls Royce 25/30 limousine to take me and my dad to the wedding and a limousine to transport the groomsmen and then the bridal party.

“I wasn’t the easiest bride-to-be as I had no idea what dress I wanted! I spent an hour trying on several styles, but although they were beautiful they just weren’t ‘me’ so I went back for a second appointment.”

I had my late nan’s and great uncle’s names stitched into my dress and mybridesmaids gave me a beautiful charm with pictures of them on to attach to my bouquet.

Ben and his groomsmen looked smart in navy blue morning suits with wool and cashmere waistcoats in a tweed check style to complement the rustic setting and wedding theme. Ben’s was double-breasted to stand out from the rest and he had a contrasting ivory cravat.

32

The bridesmaids’ burgundy dresses complemented the bouquets andmatched the groomsmen’s cravats and pockets squares, pulling all thecolours together beautifully.

We kept the décor simple to complement the rustic feel of the barn, leaving the original beams and features uncovered and draping ivy along the balcony and bannisters to tie in with the natural feel.

I sent a picture of our personalised stationery to the cake maker and florist who incorporated the same colours and styles in their designs to tie the whole look together.

Singer Lucy Duffield, a classmate of Becky’s from her drama collegedays. performed before, during and after the ceremony and at thedrinks reception.
“As soon as Becky showed me a video of Lucy singing, I knew she was perfect. Her version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow as Becky walked down the aisle will stay with me forever.” – Ben
33 REAL WEDDINGS

Our cake took pride of place on a log slice stand personalised with our names and the wedding date.

The table plan complemented the rest of our stationery and we arranged the seating to make sure everyone was with someone they knew.

Our wedding was postponed due to Covid and the drinks tokens we gave our guests as favours had the original date on. It was nice to be able to acknowledge the day we should have got married though and also reassure everyone that the tokens were still valid!

We had gold stands for the floral centrepieces and the laser-cut wooden place names made great keepsakes for our family and friends.

We toasted marshmallows around the firepit in the evening which really added to the atmosphere and was a big hit with our guests! It also made for beautiful photos!

For the evening décor, we had a rustic wooden Mr & Mrs sign on the dancefloor with festoon lighting draped down the walls to create a lovely glow.

“We arranged for the bride and groom’s party to stay at The Salthouse Hotel in Ipswich and had a coach to take people back there at the end of the night. It was lovely to finish our day the way we started –surrounded by our loved ones!” – Becky

Flower power

Beautiful blooms added to the romantic ‘Bridgerton’ vibes on Ella and Ben’s long-awaited big day Images courtesy of Tom Halliday Photography 36

Childhood sweethearts Ella and Ben met at school and became best friends, hanging out together and chatting online most evenings. By the age of 14, they were boyfriend and girlfriend and have been together ever since. “Ben has always made me laugh and I adore him for that,” says Ella.

POPPING THE QUESTION

Ben proposed on Ella’s graduation day in October 2018. “After the formal part we had a small family celebration and as my dad raised a glass to toast my success, Ben came back from the car with a large bouquet of red roses and the ring box which he had sneakily hidden. He then proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him, surrounded by our loved ones with a Michael Bublé song playing in the background. It was a complete surprise and my cousin videoed the moment so I can relive it time and time again,” reveals Ella.

THE TIME AND PLACE

When it came to choosing where to wed, there was only ever one place in the running – The Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket. Ella was already familiar with the venue from working with her mum in their family floristry business Langton Flowers in Mildenhall. “We are a recommended supplier and provide the flowers for all their horse racing events,” she explains. “From my first visit there, before our engagement was even on the cards, I knew it was the one! The history and grandeur of the place, combined with the warm, homely feel and the staff and service provided, would make anyone feel like royalty!”

LOOKING THE PART

Ella also bagged her dream dress early on but wasn’t able to wear it until three years and three postponements later due to the pandemic! Thankfully, she chose a classic, timeless style – an ivory, mikado satin ballgown by Stella York (style number 6758) with a plunging V neckline. She says, “When I finally knew we were getting married, I looked for accessories to personalise it and discovered a statement belt with beautiful floral details and beadwork which was the perfect finishing touch,” Ella explains. She also wore a cathedral-length veil for the

REAL WEDDING 37

ceremony and glitter heels, which she later swapped for a pair of white high top Converse. “Best decision I ever made!” she laughs. “I was comfortable all day, it was easy moving about the grounds for photos and I got to dance all night long.”

Ben and his groomsmen wore smart, dark navy morning suits with dark green ties and pocket squares. To stand out from the rest of the gang, Ben had a grey tweed waistcoat and horseprint braces in a nod to them getting married in Newmarket – the home of horse racing. The two bridesmaids completed the elegant look in hunter green satin, fit-and-flare gowns.

“For our first-look moment we stood either side of an archway, and on the count of three peered round to see each other. It was the best feeling to be able to take in how we both looked, have a cuddle, and reassure one another before the ceremony. It also gave me time to fix the hair sticking up on the back of Ben’s head!”

ROMANTIC FLORALS

Rather than having a specific theme or colour scheme they concentrated on the things they love combining a mix of beautiful hues to complement the setting and season with dark hunter green, the venue’s signature shade, as the main focus. With their floristry roots, flowers were always going to be one of the big wow-factor features of the day. From the entrance to the ceremony and all three reception rooms, they were blooming everywhere! Ella explains, “We wanted to channel Bridgerton vibes through the floral arrangements. Each room at the venue has a slightly different colour palette and we wanted to reflect that through our choice of blooms. For the wedding breakfast we used peach, creams and ivory shades to sit alongside the pale wood-panelled walls. In the silver-lilac wallpapered ceremony room we had two statement pedestal arrangements and swathed the mantles in shades of lilac, pale pink, cerise and blue. For the bar and lounge area we used jewel tones of red, purple, plum and coral to stand out against the burnt red and mustard furnishings. We also ventured outside, using the existing columns at the grand entrance to create a feature archway with large urns filled with summer blooms on the terrace.”

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

For the wedding breakfast, they adorned the tables with wonderfully loose and romantic floral designs combining large displays on silver plinths with pillar candles in glass cylinders underneath and low-level arrangements in pearlised ceramic bowls.

Their statement four-tier cake was a stunning showpiece featuring dark green to white ombre icing and gold-leaf detailing with a small floral posy on top and a large circlet of matching blooms below. The laser-cut caketopper featured the title of the Etta James hit At Last. “It was the song I walked down the aisle to in recognition of our long-awaited wedding day,” adds Ella.

Instead of traditional favours they gave their guests cards printed with a watercolour painting of their pet pooch adopted from the Dogs Trust, with a commemorative pin in aid of the charity. “Inside we had a poem explaining the reasons behind them, and what it meant to us,” adds Ella.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The food was another standout feature of the day with tasty nibbles for the post-vows drinks reception and an elegant threecourse wedding breakfast provided by the in-house catering team. Ella and Ben also laid on a selection of goodies, including a sweet table and cheese tower for family and friends to dive in and help themselves and a mobile food truck – one of the biggest hits of the evening! “We’re lovers of the Norfolk coast, and it was in Cromer where we fell in love with The Bucket List’s chips. They travelled to our venue to serve up their delicious fries loaded with a variety of toppings and our guests couldn’t get enough of them!” raves Ella.

FUN, FUN, FUN

Loved ones were entertained throughout the day with garden games during the drinks reception, while talented magician Matthew Le Mottée mixed and mingled, causing plenty of chat and amazement with his amazing magic. During the evening a caricaturist kept the atmosphere buzzing with his comic sketches. “The drawings not only made our guests giggle but provided a unique keepsake of our special day to take home with them,” adds Ella. It was a gorgeous evening and while the disco got the party vibes going, loved ones were also able to take time out from the dancefloor to chill out on the terrace.

“I think I almost used up all my stress through planning and reorganising the wedding, so on the day I just felt relieved it was finally here and almost in disbelief. Although there were still some butterflies, once those initial jitters had gone, we relaxed and had the best time ever!’ - Ella.

SWEET MEMORIES

Charlotte and Jack’s family friendly wedding was a joyous celebration of the past and present Images courtesy of Jeremy James Weddings

Charlotte and Jack hit it off from the moment they first met on Halloween night at their local pub. The relationship blossomed and after spending 18 months renovating their first house together, Jack popped the question. “We had all our family over to celebrate finally making the house liveable and he proposed later that evening after everyone had left. He had the ring for a few months and said he couldn’t think of a better way to start our future together than by getting engaged,” says Charlotte. They tied the knot on 2nd August this year at Woodhall Manor in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Here Charlotte shares just some of the magical memories …

REAL WEDDINGS 43

We knew Woodhall Manor was the one from the moment we arrived down the long driveway. We loved having everything together with a choice of spaces for different parts of the day.

I always wanted a fitted dress and I fell in love with Françoise by Elysse. It had every little detail I wanted and more – lace, sparkle and a scalloped train which just blew me away!

“I accessorised with celestial pearl earrings and bracelet from Thomas Sabo. The stars were to remember my late grandfather as he always called me his little star.”

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of getting married outside in the sunshine surrounded by beautiful flowers and my dream came true on one of the hottest days of the year at the Dovecote, Woodhall Manor.

La Belle Angéle had an amazing array of bridesmaid dresses which could all be made in the same colour so the girls went to town. They chose their favourite style and they all looked stunning.

Ben and his groomsmen looked sharp in black tuxedos and bow ties.

The string quartet was absolutely amazing! They played Beauty and the Beast from my favourite Disney film as I arrived down the aisle and Stevie Wonder’s Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours when we walked back as husband and wife. They also performed a whole range of current songs during the drinks reception.

“I’m like a magpie, I love a bit of sparkle and my George Unicorn shoes from Charlotte Mills were full-on glitter.”
44

From our reception drinks near the fountains to the wedding breakfast in the ballroom everything flowed from one beautiful backdrop to another.

“My bridesmaid Jessica wrote the most emotional reading, which included not only our feelings for each other but also the love she has for us both. She was there when we first met and has watched our love grow from day one!”

We used family wedding photos of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents for the table plan and named the tables after them with the date they were married going back as far as 1924. It was lovely to see and very meaningful for us to think they were all there with us in some way.

Instead of favours we had a photo booth and selfie frame to capture fun photos for our guests to take home with them.

The centrepieces included gypsophila to match the bridesmaids’ bouquets, displayed on mirror placemats with Polaroid snaps of the table plan photos and wedding dates.

The venue decorated all the chairs with ivory sashes and provided a sweet cart, doughnut wall and traditional outdoor games.

We had huge pedestal flower arrangements at the end of the aisle which looked like something from a movie! They were then moved to either side of the top table for the reception and the fragrance was delicious!

“I gave the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses to our florist and she got to work. I already knew she was amazing and our flowers were absolutely beautiful.”

45 REAL WEDDINGS

As a surprise for Jack, I printed all the selfies we’d had together to hang up under the walkway to the ballroom. As we walked through, he was amazed to see all the different pictures we’d taken over the last six years.

Our semi-naked cake was made by one of our favourite local bakers and instead of traditional flavours we went for tiers of vanilla, Biscoff and caramel Oreo, which were absolutely to die for!

After Sean Goodman performed a trick for us at a wedding fair we were gobsmacked and Jack instantly wanted him at our wedding. He was fab and was with us from the drinks reception all the way through until the cutting of the cake.

Heather Keen of Cambridgeshire-based Keen For Cakes says:

“Using seasonal flowers and foliage is an excellent way for your cake to reflect the time of year. Tie it in with your bridal blooms and colours such as soft pastels in the spring and summer and more dramatic darker colours and metallics for winter weddings.”

www.lizgreenhalgh.co.uk

Classic summer wedding flowers adorn this four-tier stunner including blousy peonies, frilly lisianthus, hydrangea florets and rose heads for a classic English cottage-garden feel – fitting for a classic, stately home setting or a beautiful marquee too.

How’s this for a modern, sophisticated look? The almost black, dark navy blue colour, combined with striking Icelandic poppies, silver leaf foliage decorations and on-trend ruffles are ideal for a romantic, candlelit winter wedding.

www.lizgreenhalgh.co.uk

Inspired by local rustic, barn-style venues, natural foliage and stephanotis give this two-tier creation a fresh spring vibe.

Award-winning Suffolk-based cake supremo Terri Newman says, “Summer this year has been all about blush pink like these beautiful handmade sugar roses with blush pink centres. The white on ivory stencilling is proving popular for our couples booked in for next summer too. We also love the flavours of the season with the focus tending to be on citrus and fresh summer berries.”

“I love this autumnal wedding cake decorated with sugar pumpkins, autumn leaves, berries and twigs as well as deep red sugar roses. For seasonal flavour our apple and cinnamon cake filled with a rich, vanilla bean butter cream and our own spiced plum jam is very popular at this time of year.” – Terri

Harvest Moon

Celebrate the season with a cornucopia of autumn wedding inspiration Images courtesy of Vicky Plum Photography

SHOOT 55

Norfolk’s Wellington Wood provided the ideal natural, sustainable setting for this stunning autumnal photo shoot. Brimming with beautiful bespoke, recycled and eco-friendly details, local suppliers pooled their talents to show just how magical a wedding can be at this time of year. The outdoor wedding venue offered a wealth of stunning backdrops, from the ancient woodland ceremony area to the rustic larch cabin and beyond. Inspired by the Harvest Moon, marking the start of autumn and harvest time, the rich palette of soft orange, copper, brown and warm earthy tones echoed the theme.

The scene was set with a giant golden crescent moon ceremony backdrop and naturally coloured cheesecloth drapes in rich autumnal shades. Decorative details included rustic wooden props, copper and stoneware vessels with everlasting dried flower arrangements, easy to move from ceremony to celebration – even the artisan chocolates, macarons and cocktails reflected the colours of the season!

The embroidered sleeves and details of the Naomi ivory dress from Pure Brides’ new collection complemented the theme. Brown and orange silk flowers and pheasant feather details adorned the bold autumnal headpiece.

To create the bridal look, hair and make-up specialist Karla Tina combined an autumnal brown palette and whimsical boho hairstyle.

FUN, FUN, FUN

Celebrating with your best girls and boys before the big day is one of the really fun parts of getting married – especially as you don’t have to do all the planning! Leave it to the gang to sort out the arrangements instead, so you can just sit back, relax and enjoy yourself. You’re the star of the show and whether you’re the full-on party type or more of a chilled, laid-back soul, there’s plenty of activities available in the region to suit a whole range of tastes. Although a night on the town remains a popular choice, nowadays the celebrations often extend across a whole day, weekend or even a week away at home or abroad, the options are as a big as your imagination and budget!

TOP TIPS

If you’re not used to being the centre of attraction, make sure your besties are aware of anything that might really make you squirm! So if it’s a no to full-on bridal veil, L-plates and willy straws, make your feelings known from the get-go.

If you want the itinerary to be kept secret, drop a few subtle hints along the way to avoid any nasty surprises!

Play to your friends’ strengths, so if there’s a born leader in the pack, delegate the organising, bookings, money-chasing and other admin stuff to them – it’s a tough job but someone has to do it.

Set a budget, it’s hard to find a one-size-fits-all solution, but if you’re looking to push the boat out, it pays to let everyone know the costs involved well in advance so they can save up or politely decline.

Try to find a little something for everyone to enjoy, from the adrenalin junkies and active sorts to the laid-back wine lovers and crafty types.

Check out what’s on offer in your local area to cut down on transport costs and it’s greener too!

At the end of the session everyone can try on their designs, admire each other’s handiwork and take photos. Hair and make-up tips for autumn brides

CROWNING GLORY

What hairstyles and accessories would you suggest to complement our autumn wedding and how can I keep my locks looking great if the weather’s damp and misty?

Kerry says: Undone, natural looks are popular, think textured chignons and buns, half-up half-down styles. Soft bridal styles and vintage waves are favourites too along with boho vibes with chunky, pulled-out fishtail plaits and twists.

Add a seasonal touch with a beautiful flower crown of dried blooms, fir cones and warm autumnal tones. Gold or copper metallic accessories work well too or leaf-shaped, acorn or dried flower clips.

To help protect your hair from autumn mists, I recommend:

 For soft hair, blow-dry some mousse into it after washing – my favourite prep products are Wella’s Extra-Volume Mousse and Perfect Setting Spray.

 To help combat the dreaded frizz, Color Wow Dream Coat Spray is amazing for protecting hair from moisture. Just spray it in after your mousse prep and it will act as a weatherproof shield!

 Don’t curl or straighten your hair after washing. Leave heat styling to your hairdresser as otherwise it won’t work as well or last as long.

Once your look is complete, set with a strong-hold spray.

TOP TIP

Make sure you or a member of your bridal party has a mini hairspray handy throughout the day.

SEASONAL GLOW

We’re getting married in late October and I’d like my make-up to be on-trend and reflect the time of year. What would you suggest?

Victoria says: I love autumn weddings, the vibrant colours of the leaves, the deep floral tones and the fact that you can take your bridal make-up to a more sultry level with rich tones – think warm candlelight rather than bright summer sunshine.

This year there’s been a change in the air. Gone are the heavy coverage foundations and extreme contouring, instead it’s all about a timeless classic look and glowing complexion rather than transformation. Matte is out, bright natural dewy skin is in, spending time on prepping the skin before applying make-up. Blushed rosy cheeks, bronzer and a pop of colour on the lips brings this look together. Brows are going nowhere, the sculpted look will still be around, with smoky eyes in earth tones rather than black and grey, and a peachy nude or a rose lip if you prefer a different take on the classic. Lashes are toned down, more natural and effortless than a full-on, strip lash look. As a nod to autumnal colours, opt for a shimmery lid with a strong bold lip in deep red or plum. Creating beautiful autumn wedding looks is a make-up artist’s playground, so get out your MAC Viva Glam 1 lipstick and swipe that colour on to brighten your day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub

£13, 100ml, www.glossybox.co.uk

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial Cream

£24, 75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, 15ml, www.lookfantastic.com

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology!

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors.

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body.

£18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it looked!

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Local experts on autumn weddings

SEASONAL STYLE

We’re getting married in the autumn and want to reflect the season in the look and feel of our wedding – what would you suggest?

Valerie says: Following the long hot summer, we’ve been looking forward to the bright clear skies and beautiful vibrant, rich earthy tones of autumn. It’s a great season for weddings providing a wealth of natural material for the big-day styling. Here’s a few ideas to help inspire you:

 For your colour palette choose tones which reflect the natural seasonal changes, with accents of golden yellow, terracotta, burnt orange, bronze, deep red, russet brown and warm green.

 As the evenings draw in, create ambience with glowing candlelight and fairylights throughout your venue. Using brass or copper lanterns and candleholders works beautifully with a warm colour palette and weaving fairylights through trees is a fabulous way to illuminate the changing colours of the autumn leaves.

 For your ceremony décor use bold backdrops with autumnal floral installations and coloured muslin or cheesecloth drapes. Decorate the aisle with lanterns and vintage rugs in red and orange tones and include some beautiful handwritten signage on reclaimed wood as a lovely personal touch to welcome your guests.

 Fill copper and brass urns with seasonal or dried flowers in warm tones with vibrant pops of colour. For a harvest theme, wheat sheaves, dried oats, poppy heads, dried ferns, and grasses will add extra texture to your floral arrangements. Make the most of the displays by reusing them after the ceremony to decorate the reception.

 For the table styling incorporating brown glass apothecary vases

or stoneware ones to display vibrant autumn florals provides a striking contrast. Dinner candles in warm accent colours such as orange, ochre and rich red, look incredible paired with cheesecloth or linen table runners and napkins in complementary tones.

 Bring the outdoors in by adding natural elements from your surroundings. Forage and gather dried leaves, pine cones, acorns and seasonal fruit to add a natural warm hue to the table décor and place settings.

Add a textured element to your table plans and place cards by using paper made from recycled material and eco-friendly fibres or seeds with the addition of beautiful handwritten calligraphy to impress your guests.

Include rustic elements like hay bales, baskets and vintage crates filled with apples and pears and a variety of pumpkins and squashes to add depth of colour and texture to your venue styling.

 Create a cosy and inviting chill-out area for your guests using vintage cane furniture or velvet sofas with warm throws, vintage rugs and cushions in orange, russet, red and yellow tones.

It’s the season for fires, hot punch and toasting marshmallows, so to keep your guests cosy while they’re outside, provide baskets filled with blankets to snuggle up in.

SEASONAL STYLE

What wedding dress styles are great for autumn to look and feel great?

Anna says: Our autumn and winter brides love a little something over their shoulders and often opt for a sleeve. They are really on trend right now and whether it be simple and fitted, blousy with a button cuff or short and sweet, there are a huge variety of gowns with a sleeve option, some of which are detachable to give you a different look for the evening.

Capes are another must-have accessory for autumn and winter weddings that will be hot for 2023 brides. They come in all manner of styles and designs to suit you and your dream gown. From full-length embellished sparkle to dramatic shoulder pads and elegant silhouettes, there is a cape for every bride, so don’t be afraid to experiment and really up your bridal game!

Phoebe, a gorgeously simple sparkle crepe gown matched with an incredible statement cape from Milla Nova.

UNDER CANVAS

We’re getting married in October as it’s our favourite time of year and we want to create a cosy atmosphere. We love the idea of having tipis for the reception but are worried about the weather. What happens if it’s wet and chilly?

Rob says: The tipis can be set up in a sheltered part of the grounds and rather than raise the sides to make the most of the views, one or two can be opened for a few hours in the afternoon if it’s warm and sunny. It’s then simple to close the tipis up again and make them snug and cosy. They can also be positioned with solid access underfoot, to avoid wet or muddy feet and to minimise draughts. The internal firepit creates a cosy look and with an external, thermostatically controlled heating system too, warm air can be ducted into the tipis if needed. Surrounded by countryside with plenty of trees, the autumn colours complement the natural tones of the tipis beautifully and the large, central overhead rings can be decorated with seasonal foliage throughout the year. The catering is versatile too, with plenty of options to theme meals to the season.

A TASTE OF AUTUMN

We haven’t decided on the menu for our autumn wedding yet. What would you advise?

Emma and Lucy say: When it comes to weddings, we definitely notice a difference when it comes to the changing seasons. Over the summer months the focus is more on fine dining and the intricate details, while coming into autumn, we’re seeing demand for more wholesome sharing platters. We always use fresh local produce and try to adapt our menus to what is in season such as local lamb racks with asparagus in the spring compared to a rustic vegetable tagine main course for this time of year. We find that our dinner party menus also change from things like Cley Smokehouse seafood platters to winter squash soups and berry crumbles. We love catering for all seasons, but we have to admit we love the rustic, wholesome vibes of autumnal weddings the most. We have also noticed a huge increase in demand for vegetarian and vegan dishes too and have now added a couple more options to our 2023 menu to adapt to the current global change on how we look at food as a society.

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

88

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

The ultimate

destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination
92

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
