Well, hasn’t 2022 just flown by? I can hardly believe it, here we are, fast approaching Christmas. It’s only natural as you reach the end of a year to reflect on all that’s happened as well as what’s to come. For me, the highlight has been CWM senior editor Melissa’s nuptials. Celebrating that amazing wedding day really brought home to me how far we’ve come this year from the dark days of 2020 and 2021 with their lockdowns and restrictions. It felt like the normality we’d been praying for, when many of us had been left plagued with doubt over whether our wonderful world of weddings would ever be back in quite the same way.

There’s even been the usual flurry of celebrity weddings this year, leading the way as ever with trends we expect to see featuring in your weddings very soon, notably on the veil front. There was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck with the bride dressed in that oh-so elegant Ralph Lauren turtleneck column ceremony dress and a sleek silhouette with removable veil hood for the evening. Personally, I’m hoping we see more bridal hoods on wedding dresses next year, following on from the amazing capes that made inroads in 2022. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian made pairing a short dress with a long veil a thing when she married Travis Barker. The showstopping cathedral-length veil was personalised with hand-embroidered flowers and a large image of the Virgin Mary inspired by her new husband’s tattoo. If you love the idea of going bespoke have a look out for Kent-based suppliers such as www.storyofmydress.com who can embroider your veil with your initials, wedding date, some special words and even meaningful song lyrics.

In September, when we sadly lost Her Majesty the Queen and TV channels were airing wall-to-wall documentaries looking back over her incredible life and service, we were reminded of her wedding day in 1947, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Seeing these images brought me back full circle. Sure, J-Lo’s veil was new and edgy, Kourtney K’s was modern and oh-so personal, but looking at these 70-something-year-old images of our beloved Queen made me realise: Her Majesty did it best! Her breathtaking 13-foot tulle veil attached at the shoulders was symbolic of rebirth and growth after the Second World War and was said to be inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Primavera. Incidentally, the silk for the appliqués was produced at Lullington Castle in Kent!

So, enough musings from me! I hope you enjoy this, the last issue of the year. The county’s photographers have shared their 2022 highlights and we talk to Kent’s make-up artists and hair stylists about creating a bridal look to complement your vibe.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Rochester Corn Exchange has been named a finalist in the Heritage Venue of the Year category at the prestigious Kent Wedding Awards. Built in 1706 by the rather fabulously named Sir Cloudesley Shovell, this 18th-century gem is located a stone’s throw from Rochester’s Castle and Cathedral, and in 2024 it will be celebrating 100 years as one of Medway’s premier venues for weddings and events.

RAISE YOUR GLASS

Kent’s newest toastmaster David Mote has had a busy year. Since qualifying as a Fellow of the Guild of International Professional Toastmasters just 12 months ago, former Mayor of Dartford David has acted as master of ceremonies at an average of three weddings or civic ceremonies per month, and is now looking forward to a hectic festive season.

Based in Dartford, David’s proximity to the M25 and A2 has meant he’s been able to support events on both sides of the Thames and throughout Kent. Speaking of his early success David explains, “I’ve been very lucky and think my clients appreciate my light-hearted and flexible approach to making their event both successful and memorable for all the right reasons.”

Check out www.toastmastermote.co.uk

The venue is one of a collection of historical buildings in Medway, available for wedding hire. Other showstopping locations include Upnor Castle, a 16th-century riverside fort built to protect the Royal Dockyard from attack; The Guildhall, built in 1687; and Eastgate House, mentioned in two of Charles Dickens’ works.

Dee O’Rourke, Medway Council’s assistant director of culture and community says, “Rochester Corn Exchange with its fine facade, grand staircase, high ceilings and chandeliers has provided a stunning backdrop for wedding days and events for almost a century. The venue team do everything possible to ensure couples enjoy their big days in our historical settings so being named a finalist at the Kent Wedding Awards is a wonderful recognition of the dedication they put into creating the perfect day.”

The winners will be announced soon at a black tie, Oscar-themed award evening at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel, so watch this space. We’re sure you’ll join us in wishing the team the very best of luck!

AHEAD OF THE CURVE

New to Kent is Beautiful in Curves, the county’s dedicated boutique for curvy brides. Owner Zoe Dowle tells us, “With many years of experience in the bridal industry, you can be assured that we’ve done our homework in order to offer you the greatest choice of fashionable and affordable gowns in sizes 16 to 34, all available to try on in the boutique.” From the ever-popular A-line or princess silhouettes and ontrend boho styles, to super-elegant Bardot necklines, lace, satin or sleeves – you name it Beautiful in Curves has it!

The new boutique stocks gowns by a wide variety of incredible bridal designers including White Rose, Millie May, Victoria Kay, Lou Lou and British Bridal. These exciting collections have all been selected by Zoe specifically for the care and attention they put into their dresses, particularly in terms of internal support, which means you have all the comfort you could wish for without the need to worry about a bra. Beautiful in Curves offers a full alteration service too, ensuring you get the perfect fit.

Even if what you see in store doesn’t exactly fit your vision, it’s no problem as tweaks are welcome if they’ll make your dreams a reality! As long as you book your bridal appointment ideally nine to 10 months in advance, you’ll have plenty of time for design changes, such as adding sleeves, extra lace or buttons. After all, it’s never too early to go wedding dress shopping! Alternatively, the team are always happy to offer you a dress from the boutique’s rails. As Zoe says, “If it’s love at first sight, then why not?”

A CELEBRATED SPACE

The winners of the UK Jewellery Awards 2022 were revealed recently at the Hilton London Metropole, and Kent’s Fitzgerald Jewellers in Canterbury scooped up the win for Store Design of the Year. The store was praised by the expert judging panel for its imaginative design, which creates a space applauded for being completely unique.

COUNTRY HAVEN

Ruth Leigh and Oliver Brown are now welcoming guests to dine at Updown, their newly opened restaurant with rooms set in a former farm near Deal. Over the last few years, the couple have been carefully restoring the farmhouse and grounds to house seven rooms including two cottages. Set among seven-and-a-half acres of rolling Kent countryside, the 17th-century Grade II listed farmhouse, hidden in its own magical woodland and mature wildflower gardens has been conscientiously restored to celebrate its working history and rural setting.

In the main house, you can stay in one of four beautifully appointed rooms, all overlooking the grounds. Each one has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the character of the location. Alongside these, Ruth and Oli have transformed the farm’s outbuildings including its stables to house three new guest rooms. A hidden garden lies behind a wrought iron gate and forms a quad between house, barn and pergola, housing the outdoor dining area. The pergola is shaded by hanging vines and wisteria and surrounded by herbs, olives and lavenders with open fires to keep you warm as the sun sets. What’s more, the central seating area provides a perfect space for cocktails or a glass of wine overlooking the central lawn and farmhouse.

The couple have created a simple, Italian-leaning, hyper-seasonal menu using carefully-sourced, local ingredients. The equally seasonal drinks menu features cocktails made with produce from the garden and local wines sitting side by side with bottles from high quality producers in France and Italy.

So, if you’re tying the knot in the area and are looking for a stunning place to stay pre- or post- wedding, or indeed for a foodie’s mini-moon heaven we suggest you don’t delay in heading over to www.updownfarmhouse.com

With a twist

A true taste of Italy in the heart of the

Kent countryside

Hever Castle is a gem in the heart of the Garden of England. The doublemoated Castle is shrouded in a glorious creeping Boston ivy, which turns a rich, deep red during late Autumn, and the Medieval gatehouse still retains a working drawbridge and portcullis making for iconic photographs.

Three areas are available for your “I dos.” The Castle Inner Hall can accommodate 60 nearest and dearest. The ornate panelled walls, antiques and open log fire lend themselves beautifully to a winter

itself. The award-winning Italian Gardens showcase original statues from Rome and a Trevi-inspired fountain, and are located alongside the stunning Loggia outside ceremony space, overlooking the 38-acre boating lake. The Loggia can play host to anywhere from 70 to 180 guests.

The Guthrie Pavilion can accommodate 180 guests for the reception and is situated next to the rose garden, which is illuminated into the evening. For more intimate celebrations, The Astor Wing can host up to 60, who can enjoy evening entertainment here and perhaps take a night cap into the Billiards or Music Room. The Winter Garden Lawn is available for marquee hire allowing you and your guests to enjoy the gardens during your afternoon reception.

Walk in the footsteps of the Normans’ at this Medieval marvel

A beautiful Norman church looking almost exactly as it did 900 years ago, straw covers the floor and candles light the scene. Indeed, the interior of this building would have witnessed similar ceremonies right from its beginnings and the atmosphere and silence here is palpable.

Standing on an ancient prehistoric mound, this simple two-cell Norman church looks exactly as it did when it was built in 1100. Surrounded by meadows and woodland, its walls are comprised of local flint with its roof of Kentish peg tiles partly cloaked in a mantle of ivy.

Overlooking the valley of Dode, the church’s two acres of naturalistic meadow with small village pond and stunning stone circle mean the grounds evoke memories of times past. Tucked away below the building are two retreat cottages constructed in English oak in the style of 16th century buildings.

Civil ceremonies take place in the ancient church building itself, accommodating up to 40 nearest and dearest along with the two of you. Blessings are also permitted either within the building or amongst the grounds, notably within the stone circle.

Dressed to impressed as a Medieval chapel with open flames, dried flowers and hops setting the scene, this ancient structure is also home to wedding receptions, which are laid out banqueting style, seating up to 42 guests. The minstrel’s gallery offers an element of dramatic theatre, with space for musicians and photographers.

Go your own way

This beautiful Georgian farmhouse is surrounded by apple and pear orchards, hop gardens and vineyards. Indeed, you couldn’t ask for a more serene venue. Outside on the lawn, just by the duck pond and barn with the picturesque farmhouse as its backdrop, you’ll find a beautiful traditional gazebo, complete with Kent peg roof and timber posts. Here, you can seat 80 of your nearest and dearest on hay bales or chairs,

which can be hired at an extra cost as they witness your vows. If the weather isn’t favourable though, the beautiful converted Grain Store is an option and it too can seat 80.

The venue is blessed with a picture-perfect field just opposite the duck pond. Set in the glorious Kent countryside on this working arable farm, it can host up to 150 guests and comes complete with water and electricity. It really does offer the ideal blank canvas allowing you to design your day to suit your budget and vision. You can choose your own suppliers or use those from the venue’s list of recommendations – the choice is yours. There’s also accommodation on site for 30 people, plus space for campers.

Chloe and Jamie said “I do” at Cooling Castle in April, 2022 Images courtesy of Noteworthy Photography and Film

Chloe and Jamie were 16 and 17 respectively when they met, having been introduced by a mutual friend. Chloe found Jamie funny despite his shyness and the fact he only managed to give her one-word answers during the entirety of their first conversation. However, by their second meeting he’d come out of his shell and that’s when they really hit it off. “Even to this day, almost nine years later, no one makes me laugh like he does,” Chloe shares.

Jamie booked a holiday to Iceland as part of his Christmas present to Chloe. It was going to be their last for a while as they were saving up for their first home. Whilst there they went on a tour of the Gold Circle including the Pingvellir National Park, the Geysers and Gullfoss Waterfall. Admiring the waterfall, Chloe was so engrossed in telling Jamie everything she’d learnt about its history on the journey, that it took her a few moments to notice that he’d been calling her name repeatedly. As she turned around there he was, down on one knee surrounded by American tourists encouraging her to say, “Yes.” With that she pulled her glove off so enthusiastically that it nearly went over the edge, but an onlooker rescued it and she held out her hand for Jamie to put the ring on.

When the couple viewed Cooling Castle, they knew this was the place they wanted to host their special day. “The venue flows so nicely from the ceremony room to both barns, which ensured that as the bride, I could manoeuvre around the grounds without risk of being seen beforehand. We wanted a small, intimate wedding with a larger evening reception and Cooling Castle was perfect for this,” Chloe explains. The team were also able to cater for the bride’s dietary needs as a coeliac, ensuring she didn’t feel concerned or stressed on the day.

So, the date was set for 14th April, 2022. Read on as Chloe tells us more about the big day...

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple opted for a rustic yet elegant theme with a palette of dusky blue and cream. The table plan was designed to fit in with this and featured vinyl writing, twine and blue and white flowers, along with various types of foliage. Chloe tells us, “The table names were based on places abroad that Jamie and I have visited over the years, which made our seating plan a lot more personal to us.” The wooden place names tied in with the rustic barn theme and doubled as favours since guests were able to take them home. The main favours however, were little jars of mints wittily labelled: “mint to be.”

The centrepieces took the form of tall geo stands balanced on log slices. The floral arrangements they held were rugged in style with plenty of gorgeous green foliage, blue hydrangeas and roses. The bridal bouquet was hand-tied in a loose, natural style and included roses, blue hydrangeas and soft ruscus foliage. The bridesmaids carried gypsophila bouquets, while the groom’s party wore gypsophila buttonholes.

Further florals featured in the ceremony room where foliage was draped down the stage. There was also a flower love heart designed to fit the couple’s palette. After moving through to the barn guests were met with LOVE letters, and when they made their grand entrance into the reception space, the newlyweds stood alongside them. The barn was also decorated with string lights running beam to beam creating a soft, romantic atmosphere.

The three-tier gluten-free cake was flavoured with one tier of salted caramel, one with white chocolate and raspberry and the other as a cherry Bakewell. It was adorned in flowers to match the bride’s bouquet and a wooden cake topper. A crocheted bride and groom made by Jamie’s nan also sat on the cake table.

The wedding breakfast was supplied by the venue and the couple opted for soup and anti pasti for starter, followed by a main course of chicken, beef or vegetarian ravioli. The delicious meal was finished with chocolate brownie or cheesecake.

LOOKING THE PART

Chloe’s stunning dress was a low-cut, A-line silhouette, with a champagne undertone and ivory overlay. Lace flowed down the skirt and train, and a button had been added allowing her to bustle it up in the evening, ensuring she could be dancefloor ready. “Kiss The Bride was the second shop I’d been to. I explained my taste to the consultant and told her exactly what I was looking for, and this was the first dress she put me in. All of my guests commented on how amazing and different my gown was,” Chloe remembers.

Jamie wore a grey three-piece suit with a blue, paisley tie and his groomsmen were dressed to match.

Chloe’s bridesmaids were dressed in dusky blue floor-length dresses, while the maid-of-honour wore a different style allowing her to stand out. Hers was draped at the top with a sparkly belt, whereas the other ladies wore an off-the-shoulder silhouette.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

“We decided to go with a photo booth for the evening, which was a huge hit, with many using it multiple times,” Chloe says. “The DJ also took our recommendations into consideration when asking what type of music we like and was able to create a fantastic atmosphere on the dancefloor.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Chloe felt extremely happy and excited as she was getting ready. “After all, this was a day I’d been picturing since I was four-years-old with a pillowcase over my hair,” she says. Jamie started getting nervous the day before, once they’d said their goodbyes and dropped everything off at the venue. So, by the time the ceremony arrived the nerves caused him to make a few mistakes during the vows. He had to repeat them for legal reasons, but all was well and no doubt he felt better with Chloe by his side.

For Chloe, the couple portraits were a true highlight. “Not once were we staged and we had time to enjoy each other’s company while laughing about how nervous we were,” she remembers. “All of our suppliers were fantastic, but Noteworthy Photography was amazing. We felt so relaxed the entire day. Our only regret is that we didn’t book them for the evening reception, as it would have been funny to see the drunk photos! My hair and make-up lady, Chloe, was also wonderful. Never have I felt so beautiful and I’ll always be grateful for that.”

THE GETAWAY

The newlyweds set off on their Lincoln mini-moon straight after the wedding and a couple of months later went on their main honeymoon in the U.S, spending two nights in New York, four in Las Vegas and seven in Florida. “We booked the bulk of the trip via Virgin Holidays and simply booked the internal flights ourselves. It was by far and away the best holiday we’ve had,” Chloe concludes.

DOWN AT

the barn

Sarah and Lee met on a night out and after becoming fast friends, it didn’t take them long to realise they were meant to be together. “We both love a fun day out, a lovely holiday, a quiet night in and just laughing all day long,” Sarah tells us.

Lee proposed while the pair were on a family break in Devon. He selected a pictureperfect spot to get down on one knee, beneath a beautiful willow tree alongside a babbling brook. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Sarah remembers. Lee had been carrying the ring with him and was waiting for the right moment.

With their hearts set on a barn wedding, they quickly found The Old Kent Barn and knew it was the venue for them. Sarah explains, “The Old Kent Barn has been designed to make your wedding day perfect, and wow, did it exceed our expectations! The venue and staff are beyond incredible, they make sure every detail is tended to and communicate with ease. Even with some lastminute changes nothing was too much trouble. We loved that the ceremony and reception could be at the same venue. The whole place, including its gardens, is simply stunning.

“We loved the fact that we could get married inside or out, both looked incredible. We hoped to say our ‘I dos’ al fresco in the gorgeous gazebo and the guests seating area is beautiful too. It has weatherproof glass canopies overhead. All of the little details were so impressive and we knew the staff had thought of absolutely everything.”

35 REAL WEDDINGS

Lee wore a navy suit with dogtooth pattern. It was exactly what he’d been looking for. The groomsmen wore the same, but the groom was the only one to wear a waistcoat with it. I had Lee’s embroidered with his late mother’s handwriting and a message wishing him a wonderful day. He also wore a pin with this mother’s picture on his breast pocket.

I was surprised by the dress that I felt great in. I thought it would be a slim-fit fishtail, but in the end I opted for a beautiful floral lace A-line silhouette... with sequins, of course! I accessorised with a veil for the ceremony and a stunning sparkling hair comb. I also had a charm attached to my bouquet with a picture of my late father.

The bridesmaids wore multiway dresses in mint. I wanted them to have the option to wear it however they felt comfortable, and three of them opted for the strapless style, while my maid-of-honour chose to make hers halterneck.

Our table plan was written in white on a large mirror with florals decorating the top and lanterns to adorn the bottom.

The Old Kent Barn’s old white London cab drove us from one barn to the next allowing us to make a grand entrance.
36
“We felt so grateful to be able to have our wedding after all the worries over Covid and everyone being apart for so long.”

The centrepieces featured lanterns, flowers and candles, and on the three middle tables there were large, white blossom trees.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake we opted for Krispy Kreme glazed ring doughnuts with a top tier of white-frosted lemon cake.

Guests’ names were laser cut from wood and finished with a bronze effect, and our mirrored table numbers were supplied by Chic Weddings.

Our wedding favours were chocolate-covered honeycomb pieces in acrylic boxes with white organza ribbon and personalised frosted stickers.

The venue was covered in blush pink, green and white blooms including a flower wall, floral arch for the gazebo, on the top table and registrar desk.

Canapés were served during our drinks reception and we opted for a barbecue for the wedding breakfast. We selected five different salads, chicken, jerk chicken, steak and burgers. The evening food included pulled pork burgers on brioche rolls or sausages and chips. There were also vegan options.

37 REAL WEDDINGS

Special thanks go to Lauren Deeley, our wedding coordinator at The Old Kent Barn. She was a magician and just made the day run perfectly. And also to Chris Deller, our photographer, he was the best. He made sure we got all the shots we wanted, rounded everyone up for the group pictures and made us feel relaxed and comfortable.

Simon Dorey played inside the barn on a white baby grand piano and sang a variety of songs. He was wonderful and brought the perfect ambience to the room for our wedding breakfast. He also sang our first dance song, which was special. Tim Cullen from Mint DJs performed in the evening, so we could party the night away. He didn’t disappoint!

We loved the small moments we could share with our children especially when they joined us for our first dance. It was then that we both cried.

“We bought our son a little backpack with a few new toys in it to keep him entertained throughout the day, one of them being a child’s camera. We loved looking back at all the pictures he’d taken of people’s knees and up their noses! He got a few good ones too!”

NOTHING CAN

keep us apart

Chloe and Charlie met while working for a pharmaceutical company, manufacturing medication. Rather fetchingly dressed in white boiler suits, safety shoes and hair nets, each caught the other’s eye. The pair worked in different production rooms and would play charades through the big window that separated them. Eventually, after many games of charades, Charlie plucked up the courage to give Chloe his phone number and she didn’t hesitate in texting him as soon as she got home. However, she was confused when she received no reply, he’d seemed so keen. The next day everything continued as normal with games through the window and little looks. “In the end, I asked him why he hadn’t replied, and he too had been wondering why I didn’t message him. Turns out, he’d given me the wrong phone number,” Chloe laughs. All’s well that ends well.

Charlie proposed in Disneyland Paris. “We were watching the firework display in the snow outside the pink Disney castle and as the last one exploded in the sky, Charlie got down on one knee in front of thousands of people and asked me to marry him with a beautiful blingy engagement ring,” Chloe tells us.

When googling dog-friendly wedding venues they found Preston Court. The couple’s two Pomeranians are their children, so it was important that they were part of the day. “We viewed it straight away and fell in love. It has so much character with a carousel and the barn has two beautiful Dutch dance hall organs as a backdrop,” Chloe explains.

The date was set for 26th May, 2022. Join us as the bride shares her treasured memories of the big day...

REAL WEDDING 41

Charlie surprised me on the morning of the wedding with a wife-to-be box. He put Mexican-related things in there, and when I opened the card it said that we’re booked to go to Cancun in January. I

I found my dress on Instagram and contacted the boutique to make an appointment straight away. As this was during the pandemic I went on my own and it was the first and only dress I tried on. It was perfect.

The groomsmen wore the same neutral-coloured suits with mix and match paisley ties and pocket squares in pink, blue and green to complement the bridesmaids.

All the bridesmaids’ dresses and the flowergirl’s dress were from Maya Deluxe. They were a mixture of taupe, dusky blue and sage green. My maid-of-honour wore the halter-neck version, while the rest were dressed in the V-neck, short-sleeve ones.

Charlie wore a neutral French Connection three-piece suit, lined with rose gold satin and embroidered with our wedding date. He designed his outfit and Moss Bros in Chatham Dockside made it. He accessorised with an ivory paisley tie and pocket square.
42
accessorised with a tiara I’d bought for my mum as a child with my pocket money when she got married. It was my something old and borrowed.

Our cake was a three-tier, semi-naked rustic bake with vanilla, carrot and chocolate layers. It was decorated with blue, pink and green flowers to complement our palette. The topper featured both of our Pomeranians along with the two of us. It was made from wood for a rustic feel.

The catering was amazing and everyone is still talking about it.

My friend made a dress for my little girl Pomeranian from a Maya Deluxe dress, so she matched perfectly with the bridesmaids as she walked down the aisle with them.

I felt very happy and emotional too, but Charlie did most of the crying! His speech made the whole room emotional, himself included. Even the groomsmen cried.

The Silver Service Singers performed at the wedding breakfast. They were serving guests disguised as waiters, then after the speeches they staged a big scene where they fell over with an ice bucket and cutlery, getting everyone’s attention. They then burst into song and got the whole room dancing and singing along. SNOW THAT glitters

In February this year when we all got together to create this shoot, we were expecting grey skies. We thought we’d find ourselves in the midst of winter, perfect for our all-that-glitters theme. Instead we had brilliant blue skies, warm sunshine and there wasn’t a snowflake in sight,” remembers shoot coordinator Laurie Edwards, from Chic Weddings and Events.

With a frosty vibe in mind, the colour palette was built around white and steel blue, with a hint of silver. “I didn’t want the look to be over the top and glitzy, more frozen and icy,” Laurie explains. The ceremony area’s existing curtains were draped in white chiffon and Chic’s gorgeous winter trees lined the aisle. These were hung with glass globes holding tea light candles and crystal strands creating a frosty glow.

The styling of the reception area echoed that of the ceremony. Hundreds of cut-glass candle votives and cylinders with floating candles, charger plates with silver beading around the edge, ice-blue napkins with a silver cuff, and white sequin cloths all brought just enough subtle sparkle and glamour to the space. Meanwhile, draping again softened the room and ushered in the romance.

The stunning floral displays featured a mix of early grey roses, white lisianthus, white anemone, white genista, off-white spray roses, silver grey brunia berries, eucalyptus and silver asparagus fern, with white hydrangea. Meanwhile, handmade sugar paste versions of these glorious fresh florals were used to decorate the showstopping bake.

GOALS Squad

The morning preparations with your best gals are a memorable time, so why not enjoy it in style in a purposely-designed space?

LOCAL SHOOT 51

With the opening of Bridal Prep Studios in Ashford, owner Samantha Beeny decided to organise a styled shoot complete with girl-gang vibe. “After all, the morning of your wedding is the time to gather the tribe and get ready together. It’s the perfect start to the day,” she explains.

The inspiration for the pink and blue palette came from the male model’s suit. “The colours were perfect, they complemented the environment and weren’t at all overpowering,” Samantha explains. However, the model tested positive for Covid the day before the shoot and couldn’t make it. So, one brave team member, celebrant Katherine Luxford, headed to the local Suit Direct to enquire whether any staff members had any modelling experience and if there were any suits available to borrow. “The world is a magical place sometimes and occasionally everything works out, as it did for us. The lovely Ben stepped in at a moment’s notice and he was great,” Samantha shares.

Gemma from Mia Rose Bridal brought along no fewer than six dresses on the day, enough for all the models to try one on. Even Samantha had the opportunity to wear one! “They fit each of us perfectly. It reminded us of the Friends episode: Wedding Dresses,” she laughs.

Samantha continues, “It was the best day of my professional life! We had a fantastic mix of start-up and experienced suppliers, and as each one arrived and started their work, I was growing giddy to see the studio being used for its intended purpose. The shoot may have been styled, but the buzz was real. I’m grateful to everyone who took part.”

THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

A look back at 2022 through the lenses of the county’s wedding photographers

What a wedding-packed year it’s been – 2022: our first full year of restriction-free celebrations since the start of the pandemic. Surely it’s one for this history books. Our local wedding suppliers have never been so busy turning their couples’ wedding dreams into a longawaited reality. “Finally” is certainly a word we’ve heard a lot this year!

Before we bid farewell to 2022 we asked the region’s wedding photographers to guide us on a look back at their year’s highlights. They’ve been rushed off their feet and are no doubt ready to put them up in front of the fire and enjoy some Christmas telly, but we reckon they wouldn’t have it any other way!

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

Balloons look like they’re making a comeback in venue styling. How can we use them at our wedding to complement our chic theme?

For a creative and stylish addition to a chic wedding theme balloons can be perfect. They’re available in countless different shades, which means you can find the perfect ones to match virtually any component of your day. Just how many balloons are needed depends entirely on you.

From small displays dotted around your venue highlighting spaces such as a guestbook, gifts and cards table, room signage or centrepieces; to larger displays making a feature of a welcome sign, seating plan, or sweet cart. Arches or balloon walls make a huge statement and offer an affordable addition your venue styling. You could even opt to have flowers and foliage added to your balloon display, which lends it a softer and warmer appearance.

Bear in mind these all take time, effort and an artistic eye. There’s a fine line between tacky and elegant, so you’re best left in the hands of the experts who specialise in such displays.

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

CALORIES DON’T COUNT AT CHRISTMAS! How can we put a Christmas spin on our wedding cake?

Christmas weddings offer so much inspiration for your wedding cake. Whether you want to go for the full Christmas spirit in red, gold and green or something more subtle there are so many ways to bring the festive spirit to your big-day bake. As with any bespoke cake design, I always draw inspiration from all aspects of your wedding and venue as well as the surroundings your cake will sit in. If your reception room is going to be dressed in a specific way for the Christmas period, drawing on this inspiration further is a great way to ensure your cake seamlessly fits in.

Christmas is a time of joy so don’t be scared to embrace the feelings of the period and the season. How about a full gingerbread house wedding cake? These make for a real show-piece. Alternatively, if you prefer a less-is-more approach, a frosting of snow on your cake in the form of edible glitter, or incorporating fairy lights into the design brings a subtle festive nod while keeping your bake timeless.

You can also incorporate additional elements and treats for your guests to enjoy. How about some Christmas cookies, which work beautifully as favours, or some sweet treats to sit with your cake? The sky really is the limit, no matter the time of year.

https://rebeccacarpenterphotography.com 67 EXPERT ADVICE

FESTIVE ROMANCE

How can we incorporate our love of Christmas into our ceremony?

What could be more fun than a Christmas wedding and there are so many ways to incorporate the season into your ceremony. Here are a few ideas:

Use hand-fasting ribbons in Christmas colours. Hand-fasting is so romantic as you loop the cords around both your wrists and tie an unbreakable knot – it’s the origin of the phrase ‘tying the knot.’ You can use ribbons or cords, and for an extra Christmassy touch, why not add some small tokens to the ends such as baubles or decorations?

Great colours to consider when choosing your Christmas-themed wedding palette are red, green, purple and gold, as well as snowy white for your hand-tying.

Christmas unity candles. Use festively-themed candles for your ceremony. As the warm light of your individual candles reaches your joint one, you’re united forever. Use Christmas-themed colours infused with the scent of Christmas.

Fill your quaich (loving cup) with your favourite Christmas tipple. After you exchange your vows, take it in turns to hold the quaich to each others’ lips, taking your first drink as a newly-married couple –Christmas bliss!

SLICE AS NICE

How do we decide what size our wedding cake should be and is there a way to make sure it gets eaten?

Knowing how much cake is enough can sometimes be a little tricky for couples to decide. The number of guests you have attending may not be the ideal planning indicator for the size of your cake, as not all of them will want a slice.

The average portion size for a wedding cake is a one inch by one inch finger, not the usual wedge-shaped slice you enjoy at home. There are lots of lovely cake slice boxes on the market for those guests who would rather take a piece home than eat it at the reception. Another option is to offer cupcakes as an alternative. This is a great solution for those who require gluten-free, eggless and so on. Your cake maker would ask if there are any dietary requirements at time of booking, preventing you from over (or under) ordering.

If you’re worried that there’ll be extra cake left over, make sure you ask your cake maker to leave a box. This way, any spare can be wrapped up at the end of the night and easily enjoyed another day.

ON YOUR MARKS...

We’re recently engaged and want to start getting out to local wedding shows. How can we make the most of them?

A face-to-face meeting with a potential supplier gives you the chance not only to discuss your vision for your wedding, but also to get a feel for the person. You may well end up spending a significant sum of money on their services, as well as a significant amount of time with them. So, it’s important to feel comfortable with this new partnership.

I’d recommend looking through the list of suppliers exhibiting at the fair on the organiser’s website. If a particular one interests you, you can investigate them further online to asses their suitability before coming along. It could save you a lot of unnecessary questions and will help you prioritise your time at the fair.

Many suppliers offer special on-the-day deals at wedding fairs. With all the things that need to be arranged and booked for your wedding, getting along to a show can help you get what you want for less. That means your budget stretches further to cover more of the nice-to-haves.

Don’t be afraid to ask for testimonials from previous couples. Any professional worth their salt values their reputation and would be happy to supply these. And finally, take a notepad and pen. You don’t want to forget details of your conversations by the time you reach home. That’s why, at The Kent Wedding Fair, we supply them in our goody bags!

Vicky says: I’m so pleased a December bride has opted for a strapless dress as the majority of your day will be spent inside and the venue will be nice and warm! But when you do want to head outside, there are so many options to cover your shoulders without hiding your dress.

The obvious choice would be a bolero and these can be fur, feathered, satin or lace. You could ask your seamstress to custom make a bolero with lace or beading that matches your dress if budget allows, but bridal shops have lots of choices too.

For something more fashion forward, we’re loving capes! Whether long, short tulle or velvet, they’ll add some warmth and plenty of drama to your bridal style.

SOMETHING BLUE

I’d like to have a bespoke piece of jewellery to wear on my wedding day that can be handed down as an heirloom. Can you make any suggestions as to how it could incorporate our winter theme, and do you have any advice?

Natalie says: Creating a special piece of jewellery for your wedding ensures all the romance and beauty of your day is captured within, and in the future you could fulfil the old adage of something borrowed and something blue, by lending or gifting it to the next generation. This way, you’ve created an heirloom that continues your family’s tale.

Express a magical winter theme through your jewellery by incorporating tones of pale blue, such as aquamarines and pale blue sapphires with white tones of pearls. You could also capture the frosty icicle look with rock crystals or cascading diamonds.

Consider elogated shapes with beautiful hanging faceted briolette gemstones that can create a wonderful chandelier-style earring and necklace set, imitating beautiful ice crystal formations. Inspiration can also be taken from nature’s stunning snowflakes.

KICK UP YOUR HEELS

I’m obsessed with shoes! How can I make sure my bridal footwear makes a statement and is my key accessory?

Sonja and Jo say: For many people, shoes are the essential accessory to any outfit and you have undoubtedly spent many an hour looking for the most comfortable pair to match the perfect attire. Why should your wedding day be any different? Here at I Do Shoes, we believe that anyone getting married should be both comfortable and stylish on their big day, especially as you’re spending hours on your feet before dancing the night away.

Why not get yourself a customised pair of Converse or Doc Martins and have them match your personality, dress, suit or whatever you choose to wear on your big day? If you love a bit of bling, then Swarovski crystals will definitely draw attention to your dancing feet –you can even add your new name, your wedding date or anything else that takes your fancy. Members of your bridal party can even have their own pair. They’ll set you apart and make a brilliant statement on your “I-do” day. Affordable, stylish, comfortable, unique and personalised – what’s not to love?

The look of love

Find the perfect bridal make-up and hair look to suit your style

CLASSIC ELEGANCE

“Contouring gives shape to the face where you want it. Without it features can look flat,” MUA Ruth Ashcroft explains. “Use either a contour stick or cream in a greyish brown shade as you’re trying to mimic shadow on the face. I use Face Trace Contour Stick in Biscuit by Westerman Atelier. Ensure you can’t see any harsh lines, you want a seamless transition.”

VINTAGE VIBES

Claire Aunger from Kent Professional Makeup says, “This look has been popular this year, with striking red lips and dramatic eyeliner with a defined flick. I go quite natural for the foundation, with a more dewy finish compared to the naturally-flawless look.”

Alex Bird at Alex Anthony Hair and Beauty Salon tells us about lockdown bride Katy, “She’d had lots of time to think about her overall styling and wanted understated glamour, so we went for a chic wave with height on top paired with a diamanté clip.”

TOP TIP

https://johnknightphotography.co.uk

Here, make-up artist Laetitia Rix from Makeup Angel has kept her bride’s eyes well defined yet softly blended with gold and warm brown tones. Meanwhile, her brows are perfectly groomed to frame the eye. We’re obsessed with the flawless and even skin and her cheeks are subtly enhanced with bronzer to shape and peach to warm. Laetitia says, “A soft peach lip colour complements this look perfectly, it’s a neutral hue that suits everyone. I recommend Delilah Colour Intense Cream Lipstick in Flirt.”

“When I think of vintage, I think of a classic red lip,” says Emma Tedman at Beautification Station. “Make sure lips are well prepped before application by using a scrub and balm, which helps with staying power and flawlessness. I use MAC Ruby Woo Matte Lipstick along with Morphe Scarlett Lip Pencil to make it look super sharp.”

OH THE DRAMA!

“It’s not for everyone but a dramatic look is actually timeless,” Laetitia tells us. “There’s nothing like a bold lip to make an impact, but there are many different shades so do experiment with a few to find the most flattering.

https://johnknightphotography.co.uk

“When you team this lip with a winged black eyeliner and lashes you’ll ooze confidence and glamour! A gel-pot eyeliner is the best option for a bride as it’s waterproof, and consider too semipermanent eyelash extensions instead of false eyelashes if you think you may shed a tear – it’s an emotional day! Gel Line in Ebony by Delilah is always in my kit.”

“Think about your whole look including dress, make-up, hair and hair accessories. This will bring everything together.”

LOOKING YOUR BEST 81

“If your complexion is in tiptop condition use a tinted moisturiser to give a light coverage to the skin and rock the ‘no make-up’ make-up look,” Ruth Ashcroft says. “Lips should be well hydrated and if you’re using a lipstick choose one nearest to your natural lip colour. If you’re not a fan of lippy though, use a small amount of tinted balm instead, to keep lips hydrated.”

https://florenceberry.com

Claire from Kent Professional Makeup says, “Strip lashes are key to this look, as they’ll create a natural pop, which opens the eyes and makes them look amazing in photos. Mascara alone doesn’t have the same effect in pictures. I’m always keen to mention that this make-up, although flawless, will need to be heavier than usual to avoid a washed-out appearance against your light dress. The key is to build the layers gradually, to maintain that elegance.”

“Skin, skin, skin! The secret to a flawless look is all in the skin prep,” Emma from Beautification Station tells us. “If you’re fortunate enough to have beautiful skin you’re halfway there but if you need some help with that, then regular facials (suitable for your skin type) should start at least four to six months prior to your big day.”

www.billfarnhamphotography.com

Alex’s top styling tip for achieving that flawless look is to always pay attention to the detail. Bride Claire wanted to look the very best version of herself, so he set about creating a swept-back, neat low bun with a simple hairpiece, leaving her chic dress with thigh-high split to do the talking. When it came to the make-up Alex opted for soft eyes and lips to bring the look together.

Laetitica, Makeup Angel tells us, “To achieve this look, focus on the skin, and use soft, neutral eyeshadows to enhance your eye colour, along with natural lip in a pink or peach tone. A glowing skin can be achieved using a radiance primer underneath your foundation or mixed in before application. Areas of the face such as the top of the cheekbones, centre of the nose and Cupid’s bow can be highlighted too by using a liquid or powder highlighter. A combination of bronzer and blush is vital for a lovely healthy glow.”

BOHEMIAN DREAM

Emma from Beautification Station loves to use nudes and soft pinks for a boho look. “Think sunkissed glowy skin, only using bronzer where the sun would naturally catch it,” she explains. “My favourite bronzer is MAC Give Me Sun.”

TOP TIP

“Braided hair and loose curls often go well with the on-trend boho look.”

– Emma Tedman, Beautification Station

“Make-up for a boho bride usually has a pink or peach base, which is defined but not dramatic,” shares Claire from Kent Professional Makeup. “This style of wedding tends to be relaxed with photos taken in fields, so the make-up has to be right for this to work. Anything too dramatic will be overbearing, but too light and pale will make you disappear into the background.”

ALTERNATIVE

Ruth Ashcroft shares her how-to guide when it comes to applying a bold lip...

 Take your time with the application. It has to be perfect, so don’t rush.

 Use a lip liner in the shade of your lipstick to define the shape and fill in the lip area.

 Applying a lip stain also helps with longevity, as lipstick alone may wear off while you’re eating and drinking.

If you make a mistake use a cotton bud to remove the product, then use a flat-edged lip brush with a touch of concealer in a similar shade to your foundation and apply to the outline of the lips. Don’t forget to blend the concealer out and into the foundation.

 Keep your lipstick handy to top up throughout the day.

“I love a boho wedding, I think it’s great how brides are using accessories to achieve that undone look.” Alex of Alex Anthony Hair and Beauty Salon says. Bride Megan had an amazing head dress, so Alex decided to give her hair a relaxed and understated vibe allowing it to work in harmony with the accessory.

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. Greece is

Athens

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen.

It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those wanting to enjoy some fine dining in Oia can do so at the Black Rock Restaurant. Katina Fish Tavern at Ammoudi Beach, as featured in the television show Gordon, Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

HONEYMOONS 99

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.
