There’s so much to love about London, from the rich history, electrifying energy, evolving spaces, iconic buildings and lush parks. As someone raised just outside the city, going into London was always a magical experience with various locations to discover. So, I can’t wait to dive in and work with some of the most talented wedding suppliers and newlyweds.

Summer has entered the chat, and I couldn’t be more excited! The time of year is so popular for weddings with more consistent weather, summer nights, various blooms in season and extra daylight for celebrations. Newlyweds can utilise the outdoor spaces with garden games, barbecues, food trucks, chill-out zones, fire pits, and more.

RING OF CHANGES

Hatton Garden-based fine jeweller Ruth Tomlinson has created WondeRings Marine, a new collection of bridal jewellery that’s sure to add the wow factor to events.

Ruth wanted to represent the journey of the marine diamonds and the water movement in her jewellery designs using Mitsuro Hikime, a lesser-known wax of Japanese origin. The wax has a beautiful sticky yet stretchy quality, which allowed Ruth to create flowing lines and textures to resemble the waters that carry the diamonds into the ocean. She shares, “We’re committed to sourcing our materials ethically and sustainably, exclusively using 100 per cent recycled gold and individually sourced gemstones that are mostly antique or old cut that we can upcycle. I’m delighted to source through Ocean Diamonds with this collection, as it means we can offer our clients another solution regarding provenance.”

The new collection evokes this sense of discovery, with each piece designed intentionally to draw focus onto these precious stones just as they were revealed on the ocean bed among crystals of sand. When creating this design, Ruth felt enthralled by the sense of delight the divers must have felt when discovering the hidden treasures.

FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS

The Prince Akatoki London, an exclusive hotel in the heart of the city, is extending its five-star welcome to furry friends.

The pet-friendly team will ensure that visiting dogs enjoy their stay as much as their owners by greeting them with new luxury hampers, which can be requested when guests make reservations. Filled with luxury treats, grooming products and an exclusive natural rope bone toy, it will be a hit with humans and dogs alike.

The welcome gifts are bespoke creations designed to the hotel’s specifications by Pet Hamper, a company specialising in luxury gifts for animals and their owners. The hamper is decorated in neutral tones to match the hotel’s tranquil décor, and each hamper features a three-ply luggage label style tag, which is personalised for the pet.

NEW LOCATION

Introducing Ruby Zoe Hotel & Bar, the new carnival-themed hotel set to open in Summer 2023 in the heart of Notting Hill.

Inspired by the annual Notting Hill Carnival, British-Trinidadian visual artist Zak Ové designed the property to celebrate the district’s diverse culture and history. St Pancras International is less than 20 minutes away while Heathrow Airport is around half an hour’s journey, making it an ideal location for business or leisure travellers. Room rates start at £180

per night, offering visitors a perfect base to explore the lively streets, colourful houses, local businesses and cultural landmarks of Notting Hill. It’s the perfect pre-wedding getaway to spend quality time together before the vows.

The new site is part of the growing Ruby Hotels brand in London, with Ruby Lucy in Waterloo and more hotels planned.

For more information, visit: www.ruby-hotels.com

THE ULTIMATE LOCATION

The Dorchester unveils the first glimpse of its newly transformed guest rooms and suites, marking another milestone in the acclaimed hotel’s renovation. With its commitment to reinventing traditions for a new era, The Dorchester’s renowned interior design firm Pierre-Yves Rochon seamlessly blends the 1930s glamour deep in its DNA with a contemporary edge. The design draws inspiration from the hotel’s prized position in Mayfair with Hyde Park on its doorstep, and the hotel’s charming eccentricities are reflected through a fresh elixir of colours to enhance the property’s heritage.

The newly renovated rooms and suites feature state-of-the-art updates that enhance comfort and functionality. These updates include improvements to the hotel’s soundproofing, air-conditioning and plumbing systems. With new soundabsorbing materials, guests can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil stay without any disturbance from outside noise.

The venue’s 241 elegant rooms and suites represent a decrease from the original 250 keys, which was to account for more spacious accommodation. Guests can now choose from 19 grand rooms ranging from Superior, Deluxe and Executive Park View Rooms to Executive Junior Suites, Signature Dorchester Suites, Hyde Park Suites and more. These are in addition to the Oliver Messel Terrace Suite, which is protected by the hotel and retains its 1953 stylish origins.

DAY OUR perfect

Morden Hall provided the perfect location for Tara and Arzhang’s wedding Images courtesy of Jessy Papasavva Photography

These lovebirds met in San Francisco at a wedding, and both felt a spark from the beginning! Arzhang visited Tara in London a month later before they started a longdistance relationship for three years during the pandemic until Tara could relocate to the US. She says, “Arzhang proposed when I visited California to visit him. I had to quit my job to get into the country as I had to quarantine in Mexico for 15 days before staying in San Francisco for four months, resulting in a proposal!”

Here the bride shares details about their special day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS

It felt like an out-of-body experience when I first saw myself on the day – I felt really good but numb simultaneously!

We had a string trio for the ceremony and drinks reception, which added a nice touch to the day. The team was terrific to work with and so responsive.

Our number one goal when planning our wedding was to ensure everyone would have a good time.

All my mum’s ornaments were on display as part of the decorations, which added sentimental touches.

We loved Morden Hall as the location felt out of Central London and was a romantic meeting point for families worldwide.

Our florist Nicola was amazing! She helped design the wedding and was patient as we made many chances up until the last month of the wedding. She also made our Iranian Sofreh Aghd using beautiful florals.

28

Baker Elle Gerrish created our beautiful cake, she’s so talented and her cakes are delicious! We went with rich Belgium chocolate, white Belgium chocolate and lemon – all the guests were crazy about the flavours.

My dress was called Arya, from the Enzoani Love collection, and knew this was the one as soon as I tried it. The team at The Wedding Dress Shop were all so lovely and altered the gown.

The bridesmaids wore dusty pink dresses, and all looked absolutely gorgeous!

Three of our guests performed the Iranian knife dance for the cake cutting, which led to dancing and got us ready for partying all night.

We were nervous and overwhelmed, but our wedding coordinator Akilah helped us so much.

We went upstairs to compose ourselves and chill for 20 minutes before dinner, which was special.

29 REAL WEDDINGS

With Arzhang being in America, I mostly planned the wedding with help from my parents – I seriously couldn’t have done the last few months prior without help from With Akilah and Co.

My dad’s speech was special to me! We had quite a journey the past few months before the wedding, and he worked so hard for us. He made all the guests laugh, cry and feel our special bond – I’m so proud to be his daughter.

For Arzhang, he loved partying! It was great to see all our guests having fun, dancing, laughing and being silly.

We wanted to give candles to guests for favours because they’re not only great gifts, but I wanted to add a little touch to the presentation. We picked out the gauze and tied it together with pearl strings.

We had a mini-moon on a farm and a highlight was feeding a two-weekold calf!

Making memories

Sam and Laura ‘s minimalistic and modern wedding featured a neutral colour scheme Images courtesy of Lynn Shapiro Photography

32

Theselovebirds first met at work in 2017, and it was definitely love at first sight.

Sam proposed to Laura at the Cotswold Wildlife Park & Garden back in 2018 before Laura left to start work as an art consultant on a cruise ship. She says, “We got engaged quite quickly as we really wanted to get married, although it was difficult as it meant we had to spend the next few months apart.”

The couple set the wedding for August 2022 and created the perfect day surrounded by loved ones.

SETTING THE SCENE

The pair spent a long time planning their wedding and initially wanted to marry on a beach in Barbados. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they decided to plan a citychic wedding with their closest family and friends instead.

The weather was beautiful, which allowed the pair to have a first look in Regents Park, followed by a ceremony at The Old Marylebone Town Hall. As the pair had a very intimate London wedding with only their closest family present, they had a beautiful table in the Winter Garden Restaurant in The Landmark London Hotel surrounded by palm trees and under the impressive eight-storey glass ceiling. The team’s attention to detail and setting was beautiful – plus the food was delicious! White roses made up the centrepieces to keep with the elegant and minimalistic theme. The bride says, “Incredibly, a flash of lightning lit up the sky as we sat down to eat and the rain started pouring onto the roof. We both felt so grateful and blessed at that moment.”

For favours, guests received personalised handwritten letters to read individually on the day. The personal touch made their day extra special and thanked their loved ones.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride looked stunning in a bespoke wedding gown made by Ellie Lowe Wedding Dresses, a beautiful studio in the Cotswolds. Laura comments, “Me and Ellie designed the dress to have a back slit to show off my Christian Louboutin shoes and a sparkly detachable train.” The bride finished her look with her late grandmother’s golden broach pinned onto her wedding bouquet ribbon as her something old

Sam wore a tailored navy merino wool suit, accessorised with a Christopher Ward Tide Watch that was a wedding present from Laura due to their mutual love of the ocean and marine conservation. He finished his look with his late grandfather’s gold chain. Sam’s brother was the best man, and he wore a navy suit to complement the groom’s attire. Laura’s sister was the maid-of-honour and wore a champagne-coloured slip-style dress.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple were so emotional on their wedding day. They really wanted to spend as much time together as possible, so they organised the day accordingly. The bride says, “We started with a beautiful first look in Regents Park and then hopped in a London black cab to Bond Street, where we had some chic photos outside Cartier and Tiffany & Co. The day felt like a dream and ran so smoothly, thanks to the professionalism of Lynn Shapiro, Lauren Irwin and the teams at both venues. Our photographer was incredible on the day, and she made us both feel completely at ease as she completely understood our vision.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

“As well as handwriting letters for our family, we also wrote personalised wedding vows to each other. Our main focus for the day was connection and being present in the moment.”

HONEYMOON

The day after the wedding, the couple flew to Paris for a romantic trip to the beautiful city. The bride says, “We work on board a cruise ship as fine jewellery specialists and have just completed a three-month world voyage travelling through America, Australia, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. We both love to travel and wildlife conservation – this is something we want to make our main focus moving forward.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Laura’s mum Sarah organised a beautiful rustic garden celebration with all their friends and family to celebrate the marriage the week after the wedding back home in the Cotswolds. The attention to detail was beautiful, and the event was complete with string bulb lights, sparklers and a bonfire for toasting marshmallows. Laura says, “We will both forever be eternally grateful for this as it allowed us to have our first dance and cut our wedding cake.”

CITY

Sabrina and Dimitri had an elegant wedding at Corinthia London

Images courtesy of Andrew Prod Photography

These lovebirds started their love story after meeting through mutual friends, which led to Dimitri proposing with help from their beloved pet.

Sabrina says, "He had attached the engagement ring around my precious cat Jinxy. Once I investigated what the cat had around its neck, I turned around to find Dimitri on one knee – it was a complete surprise!"

Here Sabrina shares details about their special day…

37 REAL WEDDINGS

We wanted to tie the knot in London as we both absolutely adore the city.

Corinthia London is our favourite location with the most amazing ballroom impeccably presented – we knew it would be our first choice!

My parents made the day extra special! My mum put so much time and effort into the day, while my dad shared a very emotional speech.

My mum has her own flower and wedding décor company in London, Aria Flowers, and was heavily involved in the planning process. She picked out the best suppliers in the industry and put together the most striking touches for the day.

My bridal bouquet was gorgeous, with the most amazing pure white peonies!

I gave my mum a brief and she guided me through the process. Everything was beyond my high expectations, and the team created my dream décor for our special day.

38

I had my eye on the Rocio dress at Pronovias for a while and knew it was my dream gown as soon as we were engaged.

Due to my heritage, I had two musicians playing Italian folk songs around the dinner tables with an acoustic guitar and accordion, which got the crowd singing along and dancing.

We had a fantastic entertainment that kept everyone on the dancefloor!

We also included some classic traditional tunes for our guests, who did not stop dancing to Greek and Italian music. We were elated with everything on the day; there was such a good vibe!

39 REAL WEDDINGS

We had the most fantastic honeymoon in the Maldives for 10 days. To be on a paradise island with beautiful beaches and sunshine was the best trip of our lives!

The whole wedding was beyond fabulous from start to finish! We enjoyed every minute in the most incredible location. The minute we entered the ballroom, we were in awe of the fantastic décor, beautiful flowers and the most stunning aisle.

This dream-worthy shoot is bursting full of inspiration

Images courtesy of Desirée A. North Photography

Orleans House Gallery provided a stunning backdrop to this showstopping shoot coordinated by Grace Banks at By Grace Weddings. She says, “I was inspired to create the shoot after my former clients had a destination wedding. I was saddened to hear that their older relatives couldn’t attend the wedding as they can’t travel long distances anymore. That’s why the ultimate goal was to create the ambience of an old-world European destination wedding but in London. Elegance, timelessness and joy were all bywords I sought to capture. French blue tones, sparkling glassware and a gold-trimmed table added levity and festivity to this wedding scene. I hope this editorial inspires local London couples to bring the look and feel of a beloved destination to their hometown wedding.”

GIFT KENRICK, FOUNDER OF LOVE LANE LONDON LTD

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I noticed how most bridalwear looked the same when I got married, designed to be worn on the wedding day and left in the wardrobe to be forgotten afterwards. That’s when I had the idea to start a collection of sustainable bridalwear and accessories made to last and be worn again after the big day for eco-conscious brides after delicate and elegant designs. Love Lane London is part of the 1% for the Planet network and is a carbon-negative business through an offsetting scheme.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love helping brides look and feel beautiful on their wedding day by offering unique pieces that express their personalities, all with the comfort of knowing they haven’t caused any harm to the planet or exploited workers.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

Let go of traditional expectations and be yourself! Your wedding celebrates your love, and every story is unique. So, ensure you both look and feel like yourselves on the big day.

MICHELLE KRAUSZ, FOUNDER OF KRAUSZ JEWELLERY

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I grew up surrounded by electric art, jewellery and vintage treasures. With a fashion designer dad and an artist mum who collected gemstones on their travels, studying fine jewellery seemed a natural choice. So, Krausz Jewellery was founded in 2002.

I create one-of-a-kind bespoke jewellery, sourcing beautiful gemstones for clients to choose from. I bring clients’ visions to life for their wedding jewellery and can re-model heirloom pieces. The other part of my business expresses my passion for vintage jewellery. I make one-of-a-kind headbands, hair combs and earrings lovingly handmade using only the most exquisite original vintage materials from 1930 to 1980.

Here at Krausz Jewellery, we always listen to what the client wants and focus on the smaller details to ensure they’re pleased with the finished piece.

What’s your favourite part of the job? Working with clients to bring their jewellery ideas to life is the highlight of my job.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

When commissioning or buying long-term jewellery, it’s best not to be influenced too much by fashion trends. They are great for ideas, but will you still love your rings in 10 years time?

EMILY BENDELL, CEO AT BLUEBELLA BRIDAL

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I’ve always loved lingerie, but the industry presented it to me in a binary way as either boring and functional or sexy to be dressed up in for someone else. If the thing we wear closest to our skin is for someone else and not ourselves – what does that tell us about our bodies? To me, lingerie is a personal selfexpression of individual style and spirit. I wanted to create an empowering, contemporary and fashion-focused brand. We offer contemporary fashion-focused lingerie for the modern bride, and our mission is to redefine sensuality. The bra should be just like a T-Shirt – a layering piece, a fashion item, a comfort piece or a provocative showstopper – whatever its wearer chooses it to be that day. We try to be as inclusive as possible, offering our designs in a 30A to a 40F and striving to extend our size range every season. Bluebella is also well known in the industry for breaking boundaries, and I’m very proud of everything we have achieved – from being the first brand to use a trans woman to front a lingerie campaign, Munroe Bergdorf, to being the first brand to introduce a plus size model into the windows of Victoria’s Secrets.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

Never try to change yourself or your style for your partner. Always choose lingerie that makes you feel your most fabulous self. When gifting lingerie, think hard about what she would like in shape, colour and style rather than what you would like. There’s no excuse for buying the wrong size, always peek in her lingerie drawer to check you’re buying the correct size.

ALICE HOWARTH, CO-FOUNDER AND BRAND DIRECTOR AT KINSHIP PRESS

What do you offer nearlyweds?

The company was started in 2018 by myself and my sister, Naomi. We were living together in London, and I was working as a luxury lifestyle journalist while she was an illustrator. I was looking to move from my job, and she found that requests for illustrated wedding work were becoming increasingly popular. Eventually, we put our experience together to start a company that creates dream stationery suites for nearlyweds.

We always aim to create unique stationery for couples that reflects their love story, tastes and personalities. We were adamant about working with British suppliers to produce pieces using artisan, specialist printing techniques and the highest quality of paper and print finishes.

Couples can choose every element of their stationery design, from artwork to paper colour, font and print finishes. We offer Zoom consultations with couples who would like to talk through their design and get advice if needed.

Our semi-custom range, The Illustrated Florist, allows clients to choose their flowers for their stationery, a concept unique to Kinship Press. Each stem has been hand-painted, and there are more than 60 to choose from.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love hearing from clients about their hopes for the day and how they want our stationery to reflect their love stories. From initial conversations to seeing their vision come to life, choosing beautiful finishing touches is a highlight. It’s wonderful to bring something special to our clients that represents the first taste of their wedding day to loved ones.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

Always go for the heaviest paper weight and design a stationery set you’d be thrilled to have framed in your house.

CHARLOTTE DONNELLEY-DAVIDS, HAND LETTERING ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR AT ITCHY & SKETCHY

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I needed a creative outlet from my corporate job back in 2017, so I picked up a chalkboard and began lettering motivational quotes. From that year, I started working on personalised projects for my store and turned my ever-developing skill to the wedding industry. I work closely with pairs to develop full-on-the-day signage, from welcome signs to place cards and everything in between. I create every sign by hand with no vinyl or print, making every item completely bespoke and unique to weddings.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of this business is being a small part in my clients’ weddings. I love having the chance to create signs that can be used on the big day and in their new life as a married couple.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

When working out what signage needed, picture the wedding venue and guests’ journey. Once I have this information, I can help guide and advise on what signs work best in each room.

KATY OSTRO, FOUNDER OF SOMETHING BLUE BY OSTRO

What do you offer nearlyweds?

For three generations, my husband’s family have been the leading supplier in the gemstone industry of blue topaz. While the company has a wealth of experience with this gemstone, it never embarked on a jewellery brand, focusing more on production and wholesale. But whenever I travelled with my husband to trade shows, I always looked for jewellery that I felt would do justice to our enchanting Ostro blue topaz but never found anything I loved. So, it was my dream to create a brand of jewellery dedicated to our stunning gemstone while simultaneously encompassing the something blue part of the old English rhyme associated with weddings. Hence, I decided to leave my career in law and HR to create Something Blue by Ostro, which launched last year. In general, jewellery brands will have little knowledge of their gemstones, but we have an in-depth understanding of our blue topaz that are each handselect and can be traced through their journey from source to the setting.

We offer bright, modern and affordable jewellery for both the bride and groom as well as the bridal party. Each piece in our Out of the Blue collection features a signature Ostro blue topaz set within sterling silver and white enamel. We have one exceptional piece for the bride, a handmade English lace garter that can be worn with a detachable Ostro gem charm.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Whether envisaging new pieces, writing the copy, doing photo shoots or working on social media – I love the creative process.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with lovebirds?

Think of the hidden gems of love! As you grow in love, there are many secret joys to discover. With this in mind, we have designed our Hidden Gem collection for him and her.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

66

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

Q&A Beauty

Look the best version of you with our expert advice

ALL

ABOUT THAT BASE

I want to get my skin big-day ready, what advice can you share for glowing and youthful skin?

Many believe you need an eight-step skincare routine to see results and spend thousands on monthly treatments. However, consistency is critical, and simplicity is the easiest way to remain consistent. Fads and trends come and go, but it’s easy to get swept up in them – what works for your friend’s skin won’t necessarily work for yours. Keeping your routine simple makes it much easier to determine which products work for you and which do not.

Cleansing your skin is so important, particularly in the evening. Cleaning off makeup, debris and dirt at the end of the day means your skin can breathe through the night and regulate oil production. You don’t need to wait for bedtime to cleanse your skin, so why not do it as soon as you get home? It will feel like much less of a chore. You don’t have to cleanse in the morning unless you have incredibly oily skin and would benefit from a morning cleanse.

Hyaluronic acid is perfect for deep hydration for all skin types, particularly if a moisturiser is too heavy for your skin. Remember, slugging isn’t hydrating – its breakout inducing.

An exfoliating acid or retinol is perfect for brightening and smoothing while increasing cellular turnover. A salicylic acid usually works well if retinol is too strong for your skin. Be sure not to use more than one exfoliator in your routine, as you don’t want to break down your skin’s barrier.

UVA/UVB protection is essential all year round. It will protect you against harmful UV rays that penetrate through your skin, even on a cloudy/rainy day. It also protects against various weather extremes, such as harsh winds. Most people find their skin is better in the summer. However, it’s a short-term fix with long-term consequences such as pigmentation, rosacea/extreme sensitivity and dryness.

A monthly facial is ideal for a deeper exfoliation, a chance to de-clog the pores and add intense hydration. My Glow Facial will treat all skin concerns and provide long-lasting results.

BRIDAL BEAUTY

What’s a classic bridal look I’ll love in my photos for years? Everyone is different; some brides want full glam, while others opt for natural looks as they don’t usually wear make-up. A classic bridal look would be a soft neutral smoky eye with a subtle shimmer on the lid paired with a nude lip. But you have to find what’s right for you as I’ve also had many brides wanting a 1950s look with bright red lips. Don’t try anything new on your wedding day; it’s not the time to take risks, as those photos will last forever – you’ll want to look and feel amazing.

Your make-up artist will do a trial before the big day, so this is the time to try that smoky eye or red lip if desired, as your MUA can remove it and try something more neutral if you don’t feel comfortable. Also, arrange your hair trial on the same day to see the finished look fully before you decide. Remember to take photos at the trial for visual reference.

On the big day, don’t forget a translucent powder compact in your bridal purse to use throughout the day and keep shine at bay!

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

PLANNING SOS

We’ve just started planning our honeymoon; what advice can you share to help the process?

The honeymoon is when you kick back and focus on the two of you while thoughts of seating charts, wedding favours and centrepieces become a distant memory.

With a literal world of destinations, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. At Tailored Retreats, it helps to consider some fundamental questions starting with those centred around you as a couple. What do you enjoy doing together, and are there destinations or experiences you both have on your bucket lists? Weddings often reflect the happy couple; the perfect honeymoon should follow suit!

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL

I’m set to tie the knot next summer, and I’d love to include some of the season’s most beautiful flowers in my bouquet and venue décor. Do you have any suggestions for what I should look for?

Summer brides usually have their pick of lovely weather and a wide option of simply stunning blooms. Roses are a bridal staple available year-round in various shades and sizes to embellish bouquets, buttonholes and wedding venues. Choose high-grade flowers for your bouquets, and either colour-block them with filler florals or go for a graduated effect using one to three shades. Pick your favourite colours as there’s no written rule that it has to be white or ivory for brides.

Large head dahlias, lilies and peonies are in season only until early June, while hydrangeas, larkspur, lisianthus and astilbe are your other go-to large statement flowers and fillers.

For greenery, choose to go with one shade of green with a variety of leaves or use about three to five different types with varying shades to add texture and colour to your displays. Greenery is available yearround, so source plenty to fill up the venue displays and use your large and filler flowers as focal pieces to keep costs down.

Have a budget for your flowers, as florals are expensive. Careful

Next, think about whether you have set travel dates and departure points or if you have flexibility. Many hotels offer honeymoon benefits for couples travelling within a year of their wedding, and flexibility can mean cost savings as well as a greater choice of destinations, hotels and flights. Finally, agree on your budget. Without an idea of what you want to spend, planning a honeymoon can be exhaustive to no avail. Off the back of these initial questions, a good travel agent can narrow down destinations before working with you to design a tailor-made itinerary for your dream honeymoon.

planning with your florist will help keep within your budget. Here at Becca Blooms, we tell all our brides to start speaking to us as soon as they have a date and venue booked. That way, we can source and create the most appropriate, cost-effective and impactful floral displays.

DREAM-WORTHY SETTINGS

We’re just starting our big-day journey, and neither knows what to look for when booking a venue. What advice can you share? Choosing the venue for your big day is a big decision. View as many different properties as possible to decide your must-haves and any compromises you’re happy to make.

Some couples don’t want to worry about the British weather, so look for somewhere with plenty of inside spaces. Some lovebirds never want their special day to end, so ask about a late licence too!

The Bedford in Balham is perfect if you want a venue where everything can happen in one place, from getting ready, the ceremony, wedding breakfast, evening reception and accommodation.

Becky Stevenson | The Bedford | www.thebedford.co.uk

AL FRESCO CELEBRATIONS

What advice can you share when planning an al fresco wedding?

Probably the biggest challenge you’ll face when planning an al fresco wedding is – all together now – the weather! But if you plan, you’ll find ways around it while still having the best open-air celebration you could wish for.

Make sure everyone’s adequately informed. When you send out your invitations, ensure you’re clear about what parts of your day will be celebrated outside, or indeed all of it, so that guests know to make their arrangements for attire and protection. Keep an open line of communication with your suppliers too, and collaborate with them on wet-weather backup plans. For example, at which point will you be prepared to take it all inside? Who is going to be responsible for moving the whole shebang?

Check on the access to your venue. If you’re tying the knot in a field, is there parking nearby? Are there accessible roads and paths to get to you? If not, think about overcoming these challenges for your guests. Perhaps you must lay on extra transport from a local car park, for example. Also, think about accessibility from the point of view of any less able-bodied guests you may have coming.

Sound tends to drift away in the open air, so ensure you have all the tech in place to ensure everyone can hear you say, “I do.” You’ll also need to check with the venue whether there are any restrictions on late-night music, as you don’t want to disturb the local wildlife or residents! Also, do you have all the

#TRENDING

We’re looking for the perfect florals for our wedding; what are the latest flower trends?

Summer is in full swing, and we couldn’t be more excited! The latest flower trends look towards colour and decadence with fragrant peonies, ranunculus and sweet peas. Taller stems of delphinium and lilac are fast becoming a firm favourite in the flower world, not to mention the year’s colour, Viva Magenta, a shade rooted in nature that exuberantly promotes joy and optimism to brighten any bouquet this summer.

Flowers like alstroemeria, amaryllis, anemone, cymbidium and gerbera embody this stunning colour tone and pair flawlessly with neutral-tone flowers – think hydrangea, white roses and cream delphiniums. Whether you’re refreshing your home to fit the season, exploring ideas for a wedding or looking for seasonal trending flowers for an upcoming occasion, Bloomsbury Flowers are here to satisfy all your floral needs. Anoma Radkevitch | Bloomsbury Flowers www.bloomsburyflowers.co.uk

creature comforts in place on the tech front, such as loos and generators?

Think of what cover you want to provide for you and your guests; this is crucial for the comfort of all in terms of wet weather protection and the sun – we’ve had some scorchers in recent years. Once you’ve settled on a vibe for your nuptials, this should all become clear. An elegant, lined marquee is ideal for a classic wedding, whereas a tipi is the perfect choice for a boho or rustic vibe.

When it comes to styling, take a look at your setting and plan ways to complement it with your theme. Nature can do incredible heavy lifting on this front if you strive to work with it rather than against it.

Dressed TO IMPRESS

The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:

CHOOSING A STYLE

There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.

Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.

Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.

Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.

Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.

Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.

HIRING

Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance

and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.

Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.

ACCESSORIES

The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.

Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.

Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.

Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.

Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.

A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.

If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!

Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.

Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.   Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.

Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.

GROOMING

Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!

There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com

HONEYMOON REVIEW 85

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

Do not disturb

Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.

I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.

REST YOUR HEAD

With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.

All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.

When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.

THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION

Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to

snuggle up.

The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.

I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.

Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
