Small and intimate or exclusive use weddings in the heart of the Lake District.

Before I tied the knot, several of my friends warned me about the wedding blues – the feeling of sadness once the big day is over. It’s a strange feeling when something you’ve been planning for months or sometimes even years is over in the blink of an eye. To help avoid this, my hubby and I jetted off on our honeymoon to Greece a few days after the wedding. It was wonderful getting to spend quality time with each other, relaxing on the beach and exploring the sights. Having this time together meant we didn’t really feel a sense of sadness that the day was over and it extended our wedding bubble a little bit longer.

If you’re stuck for travel ideas, we have a must-see honeymoon section focusing on gorgeous properties in the UK and abroad. Also in this issue, we reveal the latest flower trends, showcase work from local photographers and some of the best venues in Greater Manchester. What’s more, we have lots of real weddings and styled shoots to inspire you.

If you’d like your wedding featured or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it at www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

ECO-FRIENDLY PLANNING

Wedding planners, Your Forever After has become a part of the Chamber of Commerce in Lancashire. The owner, Deanna Melia, tells us: “We have attended events about reducing carbon footprint in our business and are continuously taking steps to do just that. We’ve taken part in training and business events, which can help with staying green and networking with other companies. It’s amazing to be part of such a fantastic organisation.

“We’ve also launched a new blog on our website. Not only do we show you our magazine features, but we also discuss sustainability within the wedding industry. We think it’s important to remain conscious about your carbon footprint and make ecofriendly decisions, especially with how big the wedding industry is. We want to ensure that everything we do in our business is sustainable, and that’s why we want to bring awareness to how unsustainable the wedding industry is at the moment.”

ARRIVE IN STYLE

Something Cool Wedding Cars is a new transport company based in Rossendale.

Owner Andy Buttery has spent months searching for the perfect car to bring his vision to life.

Andy is a former graphic designer and now a digital artist with many years of customer service experience. He tells us: “I was looking for a real head-turner, but something attractive that retained a classic appeal. Weddings are all about happiness and laughter, and a cool car can certainly bring lots of fun. I also like to think that we are providing the photographer with a fantastic prop to shoot with, inspiring them to get some great photos. Here at Something Cool Wedding Cars, we have found our niche, creating something different and unique for our couples. We are always available for an informal chat and happy to answer any questions on how we can use our creative side to weave your theme and ambition for the day into the look and feel of the car.

“The first car in our fleet is a 1974 VW Beetle ‘Wizard Roadster’ soft top conversion. Featuring lowered suspension, minimalistic body styling, a leather interior and lowered front screen, the appearance combined with the sound of the air-cooled engine is something spectacular. There’s also a Bluetooth subwoofer to blast out your playlist. For most couples, the preferred option of a soft-top Beetle is to fold the roof down, however, the Wizard remains stunning with the roof fastened if rain is forecast.

“As Something Cool Wedding Cars grows, so will its fleet with the ambition to add another custom VW Beetle or Camper Bus soon.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

H. Samuel, on Manchester’s Market Street, is celebrating 160 years of business. First opening in 1862, it introduced on-trend pieces that were designed with style and price in mind.

In a time when women could not vote or get an education, the owner, Harriet Samuel, beat all odds to follow her dreams and turned the family watchmakers into a mail-order business right in the heart of Manchester, with one goal: to make quality jewellery and watches accessible to everyone.

RING-A-DING-DING

Based in Manchester, Lily Arkwright is a sustainable and ethical luxury online jeweller offering lab-grown moissanite, diamonds, coloured gemstone engagement rings, wedding bands and jewellery in a variety of 18K white, yellow, rose gold and platinum. With weddings back in full swing this year, Lily Arkwright has put together a guide revealing the most popular times to propose.

Festive proposals are the most popular with many rings purchased in the Black Friday sales. Just like weddings, proposals are immensely popular as the sun begins to shine in the UK and as more people prepare for romantic holidays. Lily Arkwright sees sales rise by 38 per cent in April as couples prepare for springtime proposals. This continues into the summer months as July proves to be a favoured month for engagement ring shopping.

Surprisingly millennials no longer see Valentine’s Day, the day of love, as an ideal time to propose. With no spike in engagement ring sales in February in recent years, Valentine’s Day has quickly become an unpopular time of year for engagements, according to Lily Arkwright. Since launching in 2015, Lily Arkwright shares that sales of engagement rings typically rise in October. The retailer regularly has customers proposing on festive pre-Christmas holidays with popular destinations, including New York and European Christmas markets.

Naomi and Dan celebrated their minimalist-themed nuptials at the beautiful West Tower Images courtesy of Michael Townsend Photography

Naomi and Dan have known each other since they were 16. “We reconnected when we were 21 and had both finished university,” says Naomi. “There was an instant spark, and we haven’t been apart since.”

Dan asked Naomi to marry him at the top of Malham Cove in Yorkshire while they were on a walk with some friends. “It’s one of my favourite places with great views,” shares the bride. “We were in the middle of lockdown when lots of indoor activities were restricted, so it was completely unexpected. Despite being with a group of friends, they somehow managed to miss the proposal completely!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 23

West Tower is such a bright, fresh-looking venue which brought in lots of natural light. The reception space had incredible views overlooking the fields with eye-catching sunsets. The cellar bar and cosy leather lounge paired perfectly with our January wedding as it had warming fires to keep our guests cosy and relaxed.

I created our table plan using an old picture frame and painted it sage green to tie in with our colour theme. Our place names were made by a family friend and were elegant and timeless. We used the same shade of green throughout to tie in with our natural theme.

I love candles, in fact, our house is filled with them, so obviously we had to have them lining the aisle and around the ceremony room. We also had candles as favours, which we personalised with the date of the wedding and our favourite scents.

Our centrepieces were a mixture of high and low floral arrangements. We used plenty of green and white flowers, plus a few natural branches to tie in with the trees outside. The flowers were created by Eden Of Chorley, who included large white roses and gypsophila with lots of leafy greens. They smelt amazing and lasted for weeks after the wedding!

The cake was a four-tied design with chocolate and sponge layers. It was created by a family member who did the most amazing job.

We really liked the minimalist aesthetic, and had white layers with handmade roses and a gold ribbon around it. It was perfect and matched our personalities to a tee.

All food was created by the West Tower’s in-house chef. We were able to sample the menu six months before the wedding, and West Tower were so flexible and accommodating. They provided the bridal party with a breakfast platter to kick start the day, and we had a selection of welcome canapés for our guests following the ceremony whilst the photos took place. We also had a three-course meal, which the guests had self-selected before the wedding. To finish, we had late-night nibbles of fish and chip cones, mini-burgers and mini-pizzas to give us the fuel for dancing the night away! Every part of the food was spot on and tasted incredible.

24

My dress was a Maggie Sottero design called Alice. It was a floorlength gown with a one-metre-long train, pearl buttons along the seam and a beautiful lace pattern on the train. It was elegant and timeless and fit my personality perfectly. The fabric was so soft and very comfortable to wear. It was supplied by Susan Craig Bridalwear, the best boutique in the North West. She was so friendly and listened to exactly what I wanted! I accessorised with a long veil, which had lace detailing at the end to match the train.

Dan wore a French Connection grey fitted suit with a green pocket square and tie. All the groomsmen had matching ties and pocket squares, but they all opted for similar, yet slightly different outfits. They wore shades of grey to match their skin tones and body shapes.

We had pianist Craig Smith Music perform for the guests as they arrived and throughout the ceremony. He played instrumental versions of songs we had selected for walking down the aisle and for key moments of the ceremony. He stayed with us throughout the changeover period and the meal. He took lots of requests from the guests and was a huge hit! One of the flowergirls even got to try the keys herself, which was a lovely moment.

For the evening entertainment, we hired Steve Mitchell DJ. He was hilarious! He told funny stories from both the hen do, and the stag do, funny moments from our relationship, and made the whole evening so personal to our story. When we had been looking for a DJ, I had been keen not to find someone cheesy, and Steve was the perfect match for us!

Susan Craig Bridalwear supplied the dresses for my flowergirls. These were floor-length, white and green, with a large bow on the back.
REAL WEDDINGS 25

One of the main stories that people talk about from our wedding was when one of the groomsmen was having so much fun on the dancefloor that he managed to spill his red wine all over the side of my white dress! Fortunately, my mum is a wonder-woman and has since managed to get the whole stain out of the dress, thank goodness!

The best man’s speech was extra special. Ant had been so nervous before the wedding and had been dreading the speech, so much so that he actually took drama lessons beforehand to grow his confidence. On the day, he was hilarious. He was spot on with how he spoke about the two of us both individually and as a couple, he really showed how well he knew us and had the guests in tears of laughter and pride.

FOR METhe one

Karen and Danny opted for a burgundy, blue and gold colour scheme at Chadkirk Chapel Images courtesy of Ian John Cook Photography

Karen and Danny met in the waiting room of a car garage. “Danny was waiting for a tyre to be changed, and I was there having a puncture repaired,” says Karen. “Our eyes met across the room, and I gave Danny a cheeky grin, and it was fireworks from there. It was his unshaven, rugged look and the glint in his eyes that attracted me to him. For Danny, it was the cheeky but innocent look that I gave him.”

Danny proposed during dinner at one of Karen’s favourite restaurants. “One of the first things he did before asking me to marry him was visit my parents and ask for their permission,” shares the bride. “He then booked a table at an Italian restaurant, and once we’d had our meal, he got down on one knee and popped the question. I was blown away and must admit there were one or two tears.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Chadkirk Chapel is surrounded by rose gardens and lawns that create a relaxing atmosphere,” explains Karen. “The chapel itself, is a wonderful Grade II listed building that has been fully restored to its original look and is steeped in history. It gave us the perfect setting to dedicate our lives to each other.”

The happy couple gave their guests chocolates in boxes that looked like Cinderella’s carriage as favours.

“For the centrepieces, we had small goldfish bowls placed on mirror plates,” recalls the bride. “We placed weights in the bowls for the burgundy, blue and gold balloons, and we wrapped the strings in lights. We finished the look with burgundy and white roses and royal blue flowers from Grestys Florist.”

Karen and Danny purchased a three-tiered white-iced sponge bake from Precious Cakes. “It was made up of red velvet, chocolate and Victoria sponge,” reveals Karen. “The decorations were silver pearl drops, blue ribbons and a diamanté broach. This was topped with a bride and groom silhouette with our surname on.

“To transport the bridesmaids and ring bearer to the venue, we hired an Imperial Landaulette from Horgans Wedding Cars,” adds the bride. “We also booked a Regent Tourer for Danny and I.” Walker’s Retreat provided the couple with homemade cakes and coffee for their drinks reception, and Karen and Danny organised a selfcatered buffet at Burnage Rugby Club for later in the day.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I wore a Morilee design called Kaitlyn from Dream Dress Bridal,” says Karen. “It wasn’t what I would have originally chosen, but as soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one. I accessorised with handmade diamond earrings and a matching necklace from Andrew Lever Goldsmith. They made all my jewellery and our wedding rings, which were faultless.”

Danny chose a blue three-piece suit with tails from Freedmans. “The groomsmen had blue ties, the ring bearers gold and Danny opted for a burgundy version,” shares the bride. “My bridesmaids wore dark red chiffon dresses from The Prom Shop & Bridal Boutique.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“The house DJ played a variety of music which all of our guests loved,” explains Karen. “Everyone also had great fun with the green screen that our photographer, Ian John Cook Photography, provided. Our friends and family played with the different props and backgrounds and got to let their hair down.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“I felt very calm and relaxed on the morning of the wedding,” recalls

REAL WEDDINGS 29

the bride. “The day ran perfectly without any glitches. One of my favourite moments was walking into the chapel and seeing all our friends and family ready to celebrate our big day. There were so many tears of happiness from our guests which made the year’s delay due to COVID-19 worth the wait. The chapel was beautiful, and having everyone there on the day made it perfect. Our son, Theo, has complex special needs, and the fact he was able to be a part of the wedding ceremony was so perfect. All of our kids had a role in the wedding, Jessica our eldest was a bridesmaid, Michael and Eathan were the best men, Charlie and Joe were ring bearers, and Theo walked up the aisle at the start and gave Danny a cushion with a lucky sixpence on it. We were able to have family photographs with Theo included, and then he carried on his day with his carers.”

The couple hired a minibus for people that didn’t drive. “The first group that were dropped off got lost,” reveals Karen. “The driver took them past the chapel and ended up down a dead end. He then got all the passengers to get off the bus and said they would have to carry on by foot! They ended up in a field with a farmer chasing them in a tractor asking where they were going and sending them back down the road in the right direction! Fortunately, the guests on that trip saw the funny side of it, and it certainly gave them something to remember from the day.

“Ian John Cook Photography had some great ideas that we wouldn’t have thought of in a million years,” adds the bride. “The wedding coordinator from Stockport Events, Heidi, made sure that everything at the chapel was perfect and ran like clockwork. She had a wealth of knowledge and experience in coordinating everything. Dawn, the owner of Walker’s Retreat, provided delicate touches in the tea room, which made the setting perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for her, and our guests didn’t want for anything. We enjoyed the amazing variety of homemade cakes that she made, and she was honoured to host that part of our wedding. We knew that she would bend over backwards to help make the day perfect before we even met in person.”

ELEGANT

Daisy and Thomas had a monochromestyled wedding at King Street Townhouse Images courtesy of Emily Robinson Photography

Daisy and Thomas worked next door to each other, and as both companies were small, they often met at social gatherings. “We liked each other right away,” says Daisy. “I told my colleague that I was interested, and they told him straight away!”

The proposal was a huge surprise for Daisy. “We had been renovating our house and had just finished for the day,” shares the bride. “We ordered a pizza and sat on the sofa when he asked me to marry him. It was exactly how I wanted it to be.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 33

We loved the view from King Street Townhouse, and the size was perfect as we wanted somewhere everyone could be together and not spread over different rooms. We always wanted something a bit different that wasn’t too traditional, and the fact our families could stay over was a must. The staff were so lovely and put us at ease straight away.

Lauren from Fleuressence was amazing and helped to decorate all the tables. Kate and team from Florence & Vera Events were fabulous too, as they re-arranged everything throughout the ceremony and reception to ensure we got the most for our money.

All of the stationery, including the table plan and entrance sign, was designed by our friend. Our cake was created by Abby at The Northern Cakery Co. The top tier was chocolate fudge, and the bottom was lemon and blueberry. Abby was so helpful throughout the process, all while opening her new shop!

Thomas and I hired giant disco balls from Stockyard North.

We wanted the day to be all our favourite things, such as music, style, atmosphere and food. Indian is our favourite cuisine, so we had to go with this. Payal were fantastic, and we couldn’t recommend them enough.

34

All of my dress appointments were cancelled due to COVID-19, which forced me to get more creative. When we came out of lockdown, it was too short notice for many of the traditional wedding dress shops to get anything in time. I had seen things online that I liked and found LebrideAtelier through Etsy. Anastasia was fantastic, and she has some beautiful dresses available to purchase that were all made to measure, so I was able to personalise them. I thought if there was ever a time to risk buying a dress online, it was now. I changed the skirt to be moredramatic, which is where Deborah Bayan came in to help. She finished it off perfectly with a huge bow.

Thomas and the groomsmen all wore the same. They didn’t want to be too formal, so they chose navy casual suits and wool polos with white trainers.

After being together for such a long time, we felt really excited on the morning of the wedding.

I stayed at King Street Townhouse the night before the wedding with mybridesmaids and mum. Chloe and the team were amazing! They set up aprivate dinner in the wine cellar and a pamper party afterwards in thecinema room. They were honestly the best team, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

We got married on a Thursday and stayed over at the King Street Townhouse until the Sunday. This was the best decision, and we would highly recommend it. There was no rushing around in the morning as the venue had everything organised. We were able to enjoy the pool and relax. We booked some exhibits and restaurants, and it was nice being tourists in Manchester again for the weekend, which is something we no longer do as locals.

My bridesmaids wore formal white suits from Mango.
REAL WEDDINGS 35

Our friends run a DJ night in Manchester called Howling Rhythm, which is a mixture of Northern soul, Motown, and funk. They were great, and the music got all generations dancing together. It wouldn’t have been the same without them.

We hired casino tables from Andy Smith Presents, which was really funand got everyone mingling.

Heather and Daniella from The Collective were amazing! They werefunny and professional and were just the team we wanted with us in themorning while we were getting ready.

Emily Robinson, our photographer, was great. She captured all the moments we wanted and helped to wrangle the guests. It wouldn’t have been the same day without her, and I can’t recommend her enough.

FLOWER power

The latest wedding trends

We love flowers here at Your North West Wedding, but with so many gorgeous blooms to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming. There are many ways to incorporate flowers into your décor, such as bouquets, buttonholes, flower walls, table runners, corsages, centrepieces, arches and pew ends, to name but a few. To help inspire you, we’ve asked local suppliers for their 2023 trend predictions.

“As a florist it’s important to see changes in trends and colours. Our inspiration does not solely come from the world of weddings. Fashion, interior design, culture and world politics all play an important part in informing our predictions of what will happen next. At my flower studio in the Lake District I’ve already started to see some new and exciting changes emerging, which I think will develop over the year ahead. One key trend is the return of the waterfall bouquet. This has a subtle difference to the shower bouquet (which is also making a comeback) in that it cascades forward in a full flurry of flowers and foliage, rather than coming to a point. It also has a softer and fuller finish at the bottom, think the splash pool at the bottom of the waterfall, hence the name.” – Valerie Edgar from Flowers by Valerie Jayne.

“My predictions for flowers in particular bouquets can be summed up in three words: sustainability, colour and texture. Everyone is trying to save money as well as help the environment, so couples will be looking for more sustainable displays moving into 2023. Think about what will you do with your flowers after the big day. Can you use them as gifts after the wedding or keep them on display in your home for years to come?”

– Jo Walls from The Alternative Florist.

“Front-facing bridal bouquets show off blooms to maximum effect and can be held in a variety of ways.” – Lynne Godfrey Symonds from élégance en fleurs.

“I’m so excited for 2023 – I think it’s going to be the year of unconventional and doing things exactly how you want to! There’s going to be gorgeous, romantic and blousy pastels with natural styling at one end of the spectrum, and disco-style sparkle and pops of colour at the other. There’s also a more earthy colour palette using natural and rust hues created using a mix of fresh and dried flowers and foliage for a boho look.” – Abbey James from Fleurs&Ink.

FLOWERS 43

“In contrast to the spacious, foliage-dominated bouquets that we’ve seen developing over the past few years, designs are becoming more ‘flower–filled’. The large and country-looking bouquets are becoming a bit tighter along with sleeker and simpler lines, and the ever-present classic hand-tied bouquet has tightened up too. Foliage is still present to create movement and rhythm but it’s starting to dominate less. Your florist should be able to guide you on shapes that will suit your overall style and will best fit your bridal gown and enhance its silhouette.” – Valerie from Flowers by Valerie Jayne.

“Modern pedestals and statement designs create focal points, a great atmosphere and beautiful backdrops for your venue and photographs.” – Lynne from élégance en fleurs.

“All flower trends have sustainability and styling in common. You’ll see couples asking for advice about seasonal and sustainable flowers and opting for reusable vessels for table arrangements to create a more minimal look.

Contrasting this with large statement pieces like free-flowing broken arches, meadow-style floor arrangements and hanging installations will create an impact for the ceremony and photo opportunities later in the evening.” – Abbey from Fleurs&Ink.

“Couples will become more environmentally conscious. I predict the current rise of stylish dried florals will continue into 2023 and work alongside other alternatives like handmade felt florals. A lot of my clients have commented on how they liked the texture of dried flowers combined with felt florals. This creates a relaxed and soft feel to the bouquets whilst still adding a pop of colour to match the overall theme.” – Jo from The Alternative Florist.

“I specialise in flower preservation, and my most popular item by far is the hexagon blocks. These fit a wide range of flowers and create some beautiful reflections given their shape. Just as popular are the heart keyrings, which look so pretty with petals in them, and are a lovely little keepsake to give to friends and family. Neutral hues seem to have been more popular over summer, and I’m seeing a lot with added pampas grass which I love. I’d love to work with some colourful autumnal bouquets this season.” – Stephanie Peat from Forever Flowers by Steph.

“Bouquets in 2023 won’t be a big as they have been to help keep costs down and to tie in with the idea of sustainability. Couples will add pops of colour using a variety of florals from that season. Sunflowers are always a big hit but I predict purples and blues will start to infiltrate floral designs in 2023. However, with all that said, your wedding day is yours and you should be creative with it. Don’t try and fit in a box, do what you want to do and celebrate your style!” – Jo from The Alternative Florist.

“Colour wise there has been a lot of violet around this year thanks to Pantone’s colour of the year for 2022, but as we head into autumn and begin chatting to couples for next year, there’s an emergence of more earthy and rich, berry colours. Hunter Green is coming out a firm favourite, which I love. When it comes to venues, we’re seeing an investment in key pieces that will feature more heavily in photos.” – Valerie from Flowers by Valerie Jayne.

ROMANCE

Heavy rain meant this styled shoot was nearly cancelled, but The Barn at Morleys Hall saved the day Images courtesy of Jo Bishop Photography

This shoot began as a branding opportunity for Because I Love You Bridal Centre,” says photographer and coordinator Jo Bishop. “We began discussing a low key shoot with a focus on small businesses. I had already worked with Lancashire Floristry and knew her work is the best in the business, in my opinion, so I knew she had to be a part of it.

“The shoot was originally supposed to be outdoors, however we awoke to rain and desperately needed a venue. I put a plea out on my Facebook page asking for people to tag local wedding properties, and The Barn at Morleys Hall was tagged by so many. The owner called me immediately and was extremely accommodating! It’s a stunning location and was exactly what we wanted.”

Local photographers share their favourite images

Your wedding album should be a treasured memento of your big day, so you want it to be packed with fab photos that reflect all the magical moments. Although fashions may change and hairstyles come and go, the memories are timeless and will be captured forever if you find the right photographer to suit you as a couple and the style of your wedding. To help get you started, we asked some of the North West’s professionals to share their favourite photos from throughout the day.

THE VOWS

“The minute Richard and Lynda saw each other, the nerves went away, and they laughed when they couldn’t get his ring on properly midceremony.” – Christina Davies from Fish 2 Photography.

“The connection between these three subjects is so strong and intimate. The bride’s smile is genuine and beautiful, while the groom looks at her with such admiration, and the little boy brings sweetness and happiness to the scene. It was a really lovely moment.” – Alin Turcanu from Alin Turcanu Photography.

“I love this photograph as I feel I have captured the children’s happiness, and I adore how relaxed they look.” – Francesca Atkinson from Frans Fotos.

“The ceremony is always the most intense part of the day; nerves are high, and the room can get quite serious! It’s always lovely when a guest or family member breaks that tension by doing or saying something light-hearted or funny. This was one of those moments and I just love their expressions!” – Joanne Bishop from Jo Bishop Photography.

“This photo of the bride and groom captures the happiness and laughter of becoming husband and wife. There were lots of backstage comments from their family and friends, which made the ceremony very memorable!” – Rowena Livsey from Weddings by Rowena.

“I love this picture because it captures the true essence of the couple on their wedding day. They look so natural and happy together, and the setting is just stunning. They are surrounded by the beautiful grounds of Falcon Manor, and they look so in love. It’s a wonderful reminder of their special day.” – Alin from Alin Turcanu Photography.

HOLD ME CLOSE

“Here I captured the moment before the bride and groom had their first kiss as a married couple. I can feel the love shining through the image.” – Francesca from Frans Fotos.

“Alice and Niall had a small ceremony, and when I took them to the front of the Stockport Registry Office, I saw this moment coming and captured it. I love the busyness of the city contrasted with the quiet moment as a couple all in one photo.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

“I was a few metres from the couple in this shot, but even if I’d have been a foot away, it wouldn’t have mattered – they were in their own bubble like nobody else was in the room. I think the amount of love between them is palpable.” – Joanne from Jo Bishop Photography.

“I look back at this picture and see how relaxed and happy they are in the moment together as he is pushing his new wife on the swing!” – Rowena from Weddings by Rowena.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

“The joy and happiness in this photo are palpable, and it’s a great candid moment that truly captures the spirit of the day. Plus, who doesn’t love sparklers? They always make for such fun photos!” – Alin from Alin Turcanu Photography.

“I loved capturing the bride with her mother, as I feel it’s such an important image to look back on in years to come.” – Francesca from Frans Fotos.

“The best man’s speech is usually anticipated by many, but when it makes the groom laugh this much, you know it’s a winning speech! The laughter was definitely infectious.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

“This makes my heart happy. The first dance with all eyes on them, as it should be. That room was filled with happiness, and I was so lucky to be chosen to capture it.” – Joanne from Jo Bishop Photography.

Sian from OAH Hair and Makeup, and Samantha, the wedding coordinator at Wyrebank, worked together to create this wonderful set of images. Samantha tells us: “Sian and I have a lot of experience planning photo shoots, however this is the first time we have worked together. We brought lots of new, local suppliers into the mix and created something very special. Our model was so accommodating, and we all had a lovely time creating these photos taken by Victoria Franks Photography.”

STRINGS OF LOVE

My wife-to-be and I love modern songs and were wondering if these would work with a string quartet?

From Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran to Lizzo and Dua Lipa, you’ll want a supplier who can do it all and more. Start by looking for a company with an extensive modern repertoire list.

Choosing songs for your wedding can be a daunting task, especially

FLY AWAY WITH ME

I want to incorporate our love of travelling into our wedding cake. Do you have any ideas of how we can do this?

It can be very evocative incorporating memories from a special trip into your wedding cake. This can come from certain flavours, aromas, textures or colours that have appealed to you on your travels. For instance, one of my brides was proposed to in Sicily, so we put Sicilian lemons into the cake.

A destination may remind you of a specific flavour or taste, so there is a lot you can do using flavours. It’s also possible to include small trinkets on the bake, such as little airline tickets, or memorable photographs.

Why not make the wedding cake shaped like a stack of suitcases? You could also put a little globe on top with bride and groom figurines holding their passports. The use of toppers is a great way to incorporate little aeroplanes or special messages.

If you were going with a gold theme, you could use gold leaf to paint a map onto the side of the cake, this could also be done with wafer paper shaped like certain landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower or London Bridge. These could also be cut out of black icing and templated on a white base for a striking effect.

when you’re not sure if your music tastes are what all of your loved ones would like too. A string quartet will add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your special day and can be a beautiful way for you and your guests to enjoy the music you love.

www.terripashleyphotography.co.uk EXPERT ADVICE 59

READY, STEADY, PLAN!

My fiancé recently proposed, and I don’t know where to start with the planning. What’s the first thing I need to book and the best things to think about after that?

Start by thinking about your guest list, as this will determine what size venue you need. This list can have definites and maybes to suit the size of the property that you pick.

Look at your budget to help narrow down the venue hunt. The first big ticket item is the venue, and everything else will revolve around this decision, so make it wisely! Think about your style, flexibility, wet weather options, restrictions, included items and staff personalities before making a decision.

Once this is picked you need the other big elements such as food, photos, videos and entertainment. If you’re struggling with any of these, ask a wedding planner for some advice. Remember, this is a huge investment of time, money and emotions, so it’s important that you get it right!

DELECTABLE DELIGHTS

Many of our guests have dietary requirements, so we wanted something a bit different for our wedding cake. Do you have any suggestions?

When it comes to the cake, you might struggle to find something that is a little bit out of the ordinary while satisfying your guests at the same time. Here are five wedding cake alternatives: Cheese wheels – Who’s to say that the cake has to be sweet? For some, a savoury treat might be more up their street. In this case, a cheesecake is a perfect alternative. For your tiers, use different types of cheese wheels. Think brie, gouda, and swiss: combine all of your favourites and stack them up to create the ultimate cheesecake. Don’t forget to add some extra touches –decorate tiers with bunches of grapes, olives, and of course, some walnuts.

Macaroon tower– Not keeping with tradition doesn’t mean that your wedding has to be anything short of elegant. A macaroon tower still includes the sugary goodness and sophistication of a wedding cake if you want to satisfy your sugar cravings. Consider your wedding theme and colours to make the most of your macaroon tower. Perhaps each tier will be a different pastel hue to maintain a minimalistic look or if your style is more bold, vivid and bright colours like fuchsia and violet are certain to capture your character.

Crêpe stack – This French delicacy is bound to be something your guests have never seen before at a wedding, so you can be confident that your day will go down in history. Your crêpe stack can still follow the style of a wedding cake by using small, medium, and large sizes to create tiers. Instead of cutting the cake, you can pour the golden syrup over the stack together as a couple.

Croquembouche – This fabulous dessert of choux puff pastry filled with cream and coated in caramel is too delightful to ignore, and it looks simply stunning as the coating glistens in the light.

Biscuit stand – Incorporate some of the classics, like shortbread, chocolate fingers, and chocolate digestives, which takes the crown for the most popular biscuit in the UK. Alternatively, you could add some personalised touches by opting for biscuits topped with illustrations of the happy couple.

AN EXPLOSION OF FLAVOUR

We love strong flavours and want something unusual for our cake. What do you suggest?

My most popular flavour is chocolate orange. The orange can be subtle or quite intense if you prefer. The flavour runs through both the sponge and the buttercream filling.

Another popular and fairly strong flavour is red velvet cake filled with a cream cheese frosting.

An option probably not thought of as strong, although I personally think it is when using the freshest fruits, is luscious lemon.

Coffee is obviously strong and a personal favourite of mine.

I provide my couples with a taster box which can include up to six flavours to try at their leisure, so they’ll know exactly how it tastes before committing.

outdoorsTHE GREAT

Fall in love with this intimate, boho shoot at The Olde England Kiosk Images courtesy of Olivia Morgan

Inspired by the great outdoors, Abbey James from Fleurs&Ink worked with a group of local suppliers to create this shoot, which highlights the region’s beauty. “I put together a moodboard of a woodland picnic with soft, natural tones and a pop of colour,” says Abbey. “I then reached out to suppliers on Facebook to see who would be interested in getting involved. It all came together pretty seamlessly until the stylist had to drop out! Since we didn’t have a replacement I took on the challenge myself – which was slightly out of my comfort zones, but I really enjoyed it! The pressure eased when Donna at The Olde England Kiosk suggested Warrens Vintage VW Campers get involved. We set up the relaxed ‘picnic’ area in front of the camper, which worked perfectly and tied in well with the theme. Olivia Morgan captured lots of amazing images, which showed all of the supplier’s work and talents.”

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

66

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

Q&A Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

THE PERFECT FIT

How do I find the perfect make-up artist for my big day?

There are so many artists out there which means you have plenty of choices. Think about what look you like and see what artists have portfolios showcasing this style.

Make sure your supplier lives near your venue, so that mileage and travel charges will be less.

Reading reviews will help you find a supplier. Make sure you get in touch as soon as possible so you have time to get to know your artist and book a trial so you can get a taste of their skill and personality.

A SMOOTH COMPLEXION

I have patches of dry skin along my jawline and forehead, and the rest is quite oily. Nothing I’ve tried works, and I’m worried about my big day make-up. Can you help?

This is a very common issue with female skin that’s referred to as combination skin. Before applying any make-up, always exfoliate, cleanse, tone and moisture. For most of my brides I use two different types of moisturiser, one on the dry part of the skin and the other on the oily areas.

If you want full coverage, find a good primer. I would always suggest a powder foundation for the oily areas and a liquid foundation for the dry areas. For best results use a sponge on the oily areas.

Grooms editor Melissa Cullen reveals the latest best buys and product launches

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!

The ultimate

destination

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

86

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
