Ring-a-ding-ding
After a busy festive break celebrating with friends and family, it’s finally time to say hello to 2023. I hope you all had a lovely time and for those of you who received a ring underneath the Christmas tree – congratulations! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we know that many more of you will be getting engaged soon and we can’t wait to help you plan your special day. In every issue, we focus on the latest trends, get advice from local experts, see must-have bridal fashion and showcase exciting news from across South Wales.
If you’re unsure where to start planning, I found the best thing to do when I got engaged was to make a list of everything that you’d like to include in your day. From the big things like the venue and photographer down to the smaller details such as the cake topper and jewellery, write it all down. Now don’t panic if the list is a couple of pages long, not everything needs to be done right away and you can always change your mind. The list is there so you can see what items are important to you and to help you focus on one thing at a time. For some couples, the photographer may be the most essential supplier and for others, it may be the entertainment, however you envision your day is absolutely fine, just make sure you focus on what’s meaningful to you.
Once you have your list, you can begin planning. Always start with your venue, as this will dictate the day and time that you’re getting married. Once you have that set in stone, you can begin researching and booking the rest of your suppliers. If you’re looking for finishing touches, ideas for dressing the bridal party or venues in Cardiff, then you’re in luck, as this issue is full of inspiration.
If you’d like to have your wedding or a shoot featured, you can submit it at melissa.cullen@kdeventsandpublishing.com or www.yoursouthwales.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

A NEW LOOK
Tall John’s House in Brecon is undergoing a refurbishment. “It has become increasingly obvious to us that one of the great attractions of Tall John’s Weddings is that we have on-site accommodation for up to 25 people across the Manor House, Stables and Saddlers,” says owner Liza Watson. “This is in addition to our two self-catering cottages, which are included in the wedding package and sleep 10 in total. Bearing this in mind, we are in the process of a big refurbishment of the reception areas of the Manor House. We have moved our snooker table into a newly-formed Games Room which is adjoining our Granary. This makes the room dual purpose as we have a top for the table, and it magically turns into a serving area for drinks and canapés. We have made our smallest sitting-room into an informal bar area and have extended our drawing-room through the secret bookcase into the lounge area where the snooker table used to be.
“Of course our bedrooms are of great importance, so we have installed tea trays with coffee, teas, chocolate and milk so everyone can enjoy a cup of tea in bed,” adds Liza. “We are also committed to being as green as we can, so we use toilet paper and tissues which is produced sustainably and also resource soaps that are environmentally friendly and made locally.”

Mia and Callan
Mia and Callan met through social media in 2020. “We instantly connected,” says Mia. “We chatted for a week or so before we met, but we felt as if we already knew each other. We connected on every level, shared the same interests, passions, and visions in life and, on top of all of that, we shared a cultural background. We were meant to be and it couldn’t have been clearer from the second we laid eyes on each other.” Callan proposed in July 2021 during a trip to Wales. “We were visiting family, and all of us went down to Saundersfoot,” shares the bride. “One morning, he told me he wanted to take me on a walk to where Saint Govan’s Chapel is located. When we got there, Callan proposed to me on the cliffside. It was the biggest surprise, and I had no idea! It was the most beautiful setting, and I screamed yes!”
Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

For the ceremony and reception, we wanted venues that made a statement. Our ceremony venue, Cardiff Castle, had architectural details, elegance and class, which tied in perfectly with our vision. For the reception, The Dead Canary made the ideal transition for a more relaxed evening celebration. It’s a speakeasy-themed cocktail bar, and we loved its vintage elegance.

blooms we chose from Flowers, I do, were a mixture of white roses, eucalyptus, gypsophila and greenery.
Seeing all our loved ones in one room, with people coming from so many different places, was amazing. It was lovely to see them all joined together and left us with an immense feeling of how incredibly loved we are by our families and friends. We are so grateful to them.
I wore an ivory-draped
bridal gown called Esmee from House of CB. I chose this dress as it was fitted, elegant and classy. It was made of smooth satin that draped around the fully-corseted bodice, with a beautifully draped skirt that fell away to a sweep train for an added statement. I accessorised with square-toed sandals, a cathedral-length veil, a statement necklace and matching bracelet, my aunt’s diamond earrings and grandmother’s wedding ring.
We planned our entire wedding all the way from the USA! It made me realize how important wedding suppliers are and the relationships you have with them.
The bridesmaids opted for luxury champagne multiway formal dresses from Jacqueline Louise Bridal Ltd. They wore them in the style of a halter dress, with the back straps intertwined beautifully to suit everyone’s personalities.
Callan chose a burgundy velvet dinner jacket, white tuxedo dress shirt, black bow tie, black trousers and Valentino patent leather shoes from Hawkes Bespoke Outfitters. He took great pride in choosing the details for the day. He stood out with his burgundy velvet dinner jacket, as the groomsmen were dressed in traditional tuxedos from Slater Menswear.

My gorgeous bridesmaid, Ffion, handmade all our confetti for guests to throw after the ceremony. It was stunning and one of our most memorable and favourite moments of the day.
There was so much love put into our day by every person that was there. We couldn’t be more grateful to all those that came to celebrate our love.
For our honeymoon, we went to Santorini. It was a beautiful place that we would recommend to anyone looking for a magical destination.
We have to say special thanks to our wedding photographer, Amy Maynard from A.J Photography, and florist, Lucy Price from Flowers, I do. I gave them both five stars and recommend them to all those planning their special day. They made our day unforgettable!

Heidi and Lloyd chose a white and gold colour palette for their fairytale celebration at Hensol Castle

For Heidi and Lloyd, it was love at first sight. “We met in a night club 10 years ago and have been inseparable ever since,” says Heidi. “Over the years, we grew closer and in 2018, Lloyd popped the question during a holiday to Rome. He gave me some preserved roses with the ring at the centre of the bouquet. It was a complete surprise, and although we’d been together for six years, we’d only just bought our first home together, so I wasn’t expecting an engagement. Lloyd booked the trip for us as a small getaway, and he didn’t disappoint with his choice of hotel. We stayed at Aleph Rome Hotel, and it was so special and beautiful. I was completely shocked but over the moon.”
SETTING THE SCENE
“As soon as we saw Hensol Castle, we knew it was the one,” shares the bride. “We fell in love with every aspect of it, from the stunning grounds to the picturesque views of the castle. Not forgetting the gorgeous private lake, which we knew would look great in pictures. It had so much character and was perfect for the fairytale wedding that I’d always dreamt of.
“To decorate the space, we used gold chairs and charger plates from Be Our Guest Events,” adds Heidi. “We also used a gold frame to display an LED sign behind the top table, which lit up the room.”
For their favours, the couple gave their guests miniature bottles of flavoured gin and Jack Daniels. These were put next to the place names, which were cut out of gold acrylic. This tied in well with the couple’s table plan, which was clear acrylic with gold table numbers.
“The centrepieces grabbed everyone’s attention,” explains the bride. “We had gold stands in the centre of each table with artificial white flower balls on top supplied by Be Our Guest Events. The flowers played a massive part in our wedding theme. Hilary’s Floral Design made my bouquet which was filled with white and ivory flowers with a small amount of greenery. We had a bespoke flower arch, which made the beautiful castle entrance even more stunning. We also had a fresh flower garland draping down the amazing staircase, and a spray of flowers on the fireplace and ceremony table. We later used the ceremony table display as the top table centrepiece.”
The couple’s big-day bake was made by Ponty Carlo Cakes. “It was breathtaking,” recalls Heidi. “It was made up of four tiers, all of which were decorated slightly differently to suit our theme. The bottom tier was vanilla and raspberry sponge covered with sugarpaste and paper ruffles, which sat in a hydrangea skirt made by Hilary’s Floral Design. The second was strawberry and champagne, with the third being a chocolate and salted caramel sponge covered in light gold icing. The top tier was white chocolate and passionfruit, with our initials in acrylic gold. We also had a seven-tier chocolate-covered strawberry tower from Fruity Bouquets and a Welshcake tower from Calon Lân Cakes.”
To transport Heidi and her bridal party to the venue, the couple hired a white and black vintage car from Prices Wedding Cars.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
Heidi wore a Martina Liana gown called 1078 from Laura May Bridal. “The detailing was out of this world, and the ivory lace and sequins showed off my figure perfectly,” remembers Heidi. “It had a V neckline with the most magical beaded train. I accessorised with a floor-length veil, a silver comb and Christian Louboutin shoes, which had small diamond rhinestones covering the toes that could be seen as I walked.”
Lloyd chose a bespoke tux handmade by Nathan Palmer. The suit was black with a velvet jacket, making him stand out from the groomsmen who all wore black tuxedos. “The suit was second to none with velvet detailing going down the side of the trousers,” says the bride. “All the

groomsmen wore patent black shoes, and Lloyd chose designer Christian Louboutin shoes.
“The bridesmaids opted for champagne-coloured halter neck dresses from Yasmin Rose Bridal,” continues Heidi. “The style and open back complemented their figures, and my maid-of-honour stood out by wearing a gold sequined gown.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
“We booked James, an outstanding solo artist from the band Trilogy, to entertain our guests during the drinks reception,” shares the bride. “We then had the rest of the Trilogy band perform in the evening. They had our guests up on their feet and entertained all night long and provided DJ coverage and a disco during the breaks. We also had a photo booth from Ultra Booth, which captured our guests enjoying themselves.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“Our day was magical and out of this world,” recalls Heidi. “It could not
have been any better, and we felt like we were in a dream. It was the best day of our lives. We felt overwhelmed with just how perfect the day was and so proud that our plan came together.
“Every supplier we used went above and beyond and provided more than we ever imagined they would,” adds Heidi. “From the venue décor and flowers to the cake, photographer, and videographer, everything was perfect! The speeches were also memorable, and we were so grateful to be able to share our amazing day with those closest to us.”
HONEYMOON
Heidi and Lloyd went to Bali and Dubai for their honeymoon. “It was outstanding,” explains the bride. “We went for three weeks and easily could have stayed for another three. We had planned our honeymoon for the year before but had to postpose because of the pandemic. Lisa Lockhart from Travel Counsellors planned it for us and incorporated everything we asked for. The honeymoon was a trip of a lifetime and will always be the most special holiday we have ever been on.”

Adrien and Matthew tied the knot at Fairyhill with a rose gold and blush pink colour scheme
Images courtesy of Honeydew Moments
Adrien and Matthew met through a mutual friend. “I saw a photo of Matthew and wanted to know if he was single,” says Adrien. “We are complete opposites! Matthew is a calming influence, and I’m the life of the party, but it turns out opposites attract.”
Matthew proposed in December 2018. “It was two days before my birthday,” shares the bride. “We were at home when he got down on one knee and presented me with a ring that he had helped design. I cried and, of course, said yes! I then called everyone despite it being midnight!”
Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
REAL WEDDINGS 47
The grounds at Fairyhill were beautiful, and the reception space took our breath away. The fact that people could go to smaller lounges and chat, as well as have the main space to dance, was a big positive. Fairyhill is also cat friendly which was a big attraction for us as we wanted our cat, Trevor, involved in our day.
Amy Jones from Jones & Joy designed our table plan, invitations, place names, table names and a memorial sign that we placed on a chair reserved for my mother during the ceremony. We couldn’t recommend Amy enough. She created the perfect minimalist wedding stationery, which was exactly what we wanted.
Fairyhill provided the chair covers, candles and floral centrepieces, as well as the aisle décor, which we were so grateful for.
Not only did Best Buds by Samara provide the bouquets, buttonholes, corsages and thank you posies for Matthew’s mother and grandmothers, she also created the most gorgeous top table floral display. We hired a hexagonal arch from her, which we got married in front of and later used as a backdrop for the wedding breakfast and reception.
Bella Cakes provided our big-day bake which was three tiers and made up of Victoria sponge, champagne, and raspberry and white chocolate. We topped it with a cat-themed cake topper which we purchased from Etsy.
We had a life-size cut out of George Michael, that went down a storm with our guests!
48
After having to postpone the wedding from March 2021, we were both so happy when the day finally arrived. We didn’t stop smiling and were overjoyed that we were able to have our friends and family celebrate with us. The wedding felt so personal, and we were so glad that we included little quirks like the cut out of George Michael and the cat cake topper, as it summed us up as a couple.
To
We
and above
keep everyone entertained, we hired a photo booth from Ultra Booth. Our guests loved that they could take home their pictures, as well as leave us a copy with a message in our guest book.
The bridesmaids wore long-sleeved dresses, which were perfect for the winter weather and suited all their figures, including my maid-of-honour who was eight months pregnant!
Matthew and the four groomsmen had rented suits from Oxford House Menswear Ltd located in Pontycymmer. They chose traditional black three-piece suits with grey tweed waistcoats that contained hints of pink. To help differentiate Matthew from his groomsmen, he wore an ivory tie and pocket square, while the groomsmen had pink versions.
I wore a gown called Alexandria by Callista Bridal that I purchased from Wynter Isabelle Bridal in Barry. It was a simple, classic dress that wouldn’t age. It was the first one that I tried on, and nothing else compared. My earrings were Kate Spade, and my shoes were from Charlotte Mills. As the dress was so simple, I knew I could have a bit more fun with the veil and accessories. Eva Ashley Bridal Limited provided me with my dream veil that I wish I could wear every day!

were so lucky with our suppliers; they went over
our expectations. Special mention must go to our photographer Natasha at Honeydew Moments. We booked her last minute as we were unable to have our original photographers, and even though we had only met virtually less than a week before the wedding, she felt like a true friend as soon as she arrived on the morning of the wedding.

ENCAPSULATED MEMORIES
encapsulatedmemories.byemma@gmail.com www.encapsulatedmemories.com
Have you thought about what you’re going to do with your bouquet once your special day is over?
On average, eight per cent of a couple’s overall budget is put towards flowers, yet there’s often no thought about what happens to them afterwards. Gone are the days when the only option was to bin them or air dry them, there are now lots of ways flowers can be preserved.
Flower preservation is a worthwhile investment that’s becoming popular amongst newlyweds who want to not only keep a part of their day for themselves but also to gift to their family and friends. Framed options are a traditional approach to displaying your bouquet; however, resin is taking the spotlight with more modern and varied options to choose from.
Encapsulated Memories is a small business in Llanharan offering flower preservation. The owner, Emma Cross, tells us more: “I’ve been building this dream for just over a year. It all started because I wanted to learn how to preserve my own bouquet from my wedding. My heart and soul goes into every order and I feel so honoured to be able to preserve such precious, memorable handmade pieces. I offer framed options, resin and new jewellery products.”
Emma offers a wide range of shapes to choose from, including hearts, spheres, blocks, arches and hexagons designs, letters, coasters, tea light holders, teddy bears and frames. Prices start from just £10.

Fruity Bouquets is a family run business, providing high quality edible gifts and treats. The team offer signature chocolate strawberries, beautiful fruit arrangements, wow factor displays for parties and weddings, chocolate fountains, fruit tables, sweet carts and their ever popular popcorn and candy floss machines, meaning they have something to suit everyone.
Catering for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and bereavements, the team have every occasion covered. With national delivery available, you can send unusual and delicious gifts or treats to family and friends across the UK.
The company has a shop at Pyle Garden Village, situated within the new James Food Hall, which houses the Fruity Bouquet’s commercial kitchen, where they create numerous fruit and chocolate arrangements every day. There are a number of new products, with lots more coming over the next few months, all of which will be showcased at their shop. Pop in to meet the team and enjoy some tasty samples. PERTHYN LOW ALCOHOL SPIRIT
Four Welsh rugby icons, Shane Williams, James Hook, Lee Byrne, and Mike Phillips, have united to launch Perthyn Low Alcohol Spirit. Ideal for weddings, the drink is pronounced “Pear-thin” and takes its name from the Welsh meaning of belonging. The drink is inspired by rugby and the memory of the grass beneath their feet, the sound of the crowd, the thrill of the game, but most importantly, the friendships formed along the journey.
Perthyn Low Alcohol Spirit uses locally and responsibly-sourced botanicals interpreted by knowledgeable and passionate distillers. It’s distilled in Cardiff Distillery, which offers an ideal climate, along with quality local botanicals, in the shadows of the world-famous Principality Stadium. These botanicals make for a zesty spirit with notes of citrus, cardamon and thyme.
Shane Williams, the co-founder of Perthyn Low Alcohol Spirit, says: “We created Perthyn Low Alcohol Spirit to find a sense of belonging and share that with other individuals who value authenticity, reciprocity and quality. Perthyn is perfect for health-focussed individuals who want to feel included without having to compromise on taste or well-being. Perthyn is a constant reminder of how you want to live, so you can try to embody that happiness and bring it with you every day.”

POP CYCLE hello@popcycle.uk | www.popcycle.uk
Pop Cycle is an award-winning plant-based business offering vegan and gluten-free ice lollies and poptails. Based near Mumbles on the Gower in South Wales, the team make ice lollies full of fresh juicy fruit using the best ingredients. The pops are made in small batches with no artificial ingredients or preservatives and are usually sweetened with just a little agave syrup.
Pop Cycle began pedalling lollies in 2014 at markets and events around Swansea. “I was inspired by the idea of pedlars and a desire to create more wholesome, fruity and dairy-free iced options,” says the owner, George. “It seemed like a growing number of people were avoiding dairy, and veganism needed catering for. I was also determined to use Fairtrade ingredients wherever possible, and what better way
to get kids to eat fruit? I was pleased people liked our modern take on the lollypop and the great feedback I got on the flavours gave me the confidence to develop the business further. As well selling a small retail range to local cafes, I developed training workshops to develop skills for vulnerable people.
“I started doing poptails for weddings following a personal request, and our services quickly became in high demand,” adds George. “People seem to love the quirkiness and the flavours. Pops are great alongside arrival drinks, as an alternative dessert or even on the dancefloor. We love chatting with guests and lollies seem to please all ages. Wedding packages include the ‘Pop Cycle Tricycle’ and we offer a wide range of flavours to choose from.”
Pop Cycle has the coveted Great Taste Producer status in the food industry, following consecutive Great Taste Awards.

HOLD ME CLOSE
My wife-to-be and I are getting married next spring and would like some shots that reflect the season. Do you have any suggestions?
Spring weddings are perfect for capturing photographs as its the season of growth and new life, with the world bursting to life with flowers. Depending on the month you’re getting married in, you’ll have a huge selection of blooms growing, so take advantage of them and look for areas of your venue with plants in abundance or take a trip off site to find
ECO-FRIENDLY FLOWERS
We want beautiful flowers at our wedding, but also want them to be sustainable. Do you have any suggestions on how we can do this?
Your wedding flowers play a huge part in your day, as they bring life, scent, colour, emotion and a sense of celebration and occasion. You can have all of this and still be sustainable.
Chat with your chosen florist about seasonal options. Blooms that are in season have been grown without the use of extra heat, thus not using power to grow them. Ask them about the methods that they use. A sustainable florist would never use floral foam as it’s incredibly bad for the environment. There are compostable and biodegradable alternatives out there and old-fashioned mechanics are now in fashion again. Flower frogs, chicken wire and mossages all work just as well as floral foam and are planet friendly.
If you’re getting married between February and October, then there is the option to use British farmer’s flowers. There is a website called Flowers from the Farm (www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk), which lists all
some beautiful flowers.
My favourite month is late April when the cherry blossoms bloom. These pink and white flowers can be used to create a frame, included in your bouquet or featured throughout your décor. This is also the time when bluebells spring to life which can add a lovely carpet of colour to your portrait shots.

local growers. When you choose your florist just ask them where they source their blooms from. Here at Wild and Fabulous Flowers, we try and be as sustainable as possible, and we work with local growers to source seasonal options.

EXPERT ADVICE 61
I’m feeling overwhelmed by the planning process. What are your top tips for creating a stress-free wedding?
It’s not an easy task planning a wedding, and can be overwhelming at times, but the main thing to remember is to always put you both first. Don’t let other people dictate your day, as it’s your wedding and should be what you want and dreamed of. We recommend the following to have a stress-free planning experience:
Budget – set your budget as soon as you start planning as this will help you keep on track when considering venues and suppliers. It will also help you from overspending and getting stressed about money.
Guest list – we know you want your nearest and dearest to celebrate with you, so set your guest list to who you want and don’t be influenced by other people.
Your wedding package – make sure you know what is included in your venue package and if there are any hidden costs. Some charge extra for things such as chair covers, sashes and music systems.
Your wedding team – make sure you utilise your wedding team at your venue. Ask for advice or help for any little or big thing. For example, here at Craig Y Nos Castle, we offer planning tips and also recommended suppliers.
Your venue – do not be afraid to visit your venue as many times

A TENDER MOMENT
Are black and white images still popular, and should we have them?
Black and white wedding images are absolutely still popular! They are classic, romantic and timeless. Black and white images create a certain mood, and I don’t think this style of photography will ever be outdated, as it has a vintage, elegant feel to it.
I love a high contrast black and white image to document those emotional moments. Colour images are obviously more vibrant, however black and white images move the focus onto people’s faces and their emotions. By taking away the colour, it gives the viewer the chance to recognise some of the finer elements in the photograph.

as you need to plan decorations, show your bridesmaids or your photographer. Sometimes visiting the venue can help you envision your day and help with the planning.

BOOGIE ALL NIGHT
We’re looking for a DJ for our upcoming wedding but are feeling overwhelmed by the number of choices available. What should we do to help narrow down our decision?
Before booking a supplier, consider the following:
Reviews – these will illustrate past clients’ opinions. Don’t stop at one, read a few for each DJ, as each client will have had a different experience.
Website – a website is a virtual shop window and will help you get a feel for how professional the DJ is and what they offer. There may be pictures of past events or the opportunity to see what their equipment will look like, and how it will suit your venue.
PAT and PLI – boring, but essential. PAT is an electrical test that is undertaken on equipment, for most DJs this will be annual. Some venues will insist on PAT-tested equipment, and PLI policies. PLI is Public Liability Insurance. Any DJ who does not have this is either too new to the business to know or doesn’t take customer care seriously.
Social media – this is another opportunity to find out more about your potential DJ. Pictures, videos and posts all show the personality of the DJ or the company.
Specialist or generalist? Some DJs specialise in weddings, but this doesn’t mean that they don’t provide a wide range of music. If you decide you want a club DJ or a rock specialist, it’s worth checking if your DJ can diversify if the club set isn’t working for your party.
Meeting and communicating – if you wish to have input on the music, it will be essential to have clear communication. Meeting in person or virtually will enable you to get to know each other and share your ideas.
Services offered – some DJs offer an all-day service in addition to an evening disco. This means you can have one person to work with to organise the soundtrack to your day instead of many. Some DJs have added on services such as room accessories, uplighting, photo booths or a selfie wizard, which again simplifies your working channels rather than having a long list of people to communicate with.

The wonders of nature
A team of talented suppliers worked together to create two different wedding looks Images courtesy of Graham Davies Photography
Rhian
Rees, the organiser and florist behind this styled shoot, worked with local suppliers to create two beautiful looks. “The first part of the shoot was inspired by nature, appreciating the colours around us and how a wedding can embrace the seasons whilst still looking glamorous and dramatic,” says Rhian. “The stunning dress is called Finley by Sottero and Midgley and was chosen to tie in with the outdoor venue and to show a more relaxed and informal style. The flowers, designed by my company Wild and Fabulous Flowers, were stylish, playful and natural. A floral headband was also created to match the linear florals on the groom’s jacket.”
The second part of the shoot was all about romance. “The models,
Kate and Ruslan, are married refugees from Ukraine,” adds Rhian. “Their love for each other has seen them through very harsh times. I wanted to celebrate this by creating a romantic, fairytale-inspired look. The dress is called Cherie by GAIA Bridal. It was chosen as the subtle blush overtones fit the pink tones in the flowers. The flowers were soft pastels with pink and blush roses. We also created two different hair florals, one was on a wire which could be shaped and pinned anywhere on the head to suit any hairstyle, and the other was a blue velvet headband with florals that looked gorgeous with Kate’s eyes and make-up. Kate is incredibly beautiful and an amazing make-up artist with an understated style that enhances natural beauty.”

The latest trends for the wedding party
When it comes to a wedding day, whether you’re the bride or a guest, the million-dollar question for everyone is: what am I going to wear? For the bride and groom, as they are the stars of the show, it’s likely that they have at least an idea of what their big-day look will be like. But for the rest of the bridal party, where do you begin? First and foremost, the venue and theme of the day are paramount. A long flowing gown for bridesmaids will look out of place in a field; similarly, the mother-of-the-bride in a bold, tropical print, summer dress may stand out against a stately home wedding venue with a Bridgerton-inspired theme. Secondly, the weather, we British folk like to moan about it and rightly so, because how many sunny days do we have each year? The season and the inclement weather will dictate not only the attire, the colour palette – no one wears pastel yellow in winter –but also your accessory choice. Read on, to find out more about on-trend fashion choices for 2023 weddings...
HERE COME THE GIRLS
We all have bits we love about our bodies and bits we don’t. The best thing a couple can do to make their wedding party happy is to be relaxed and open-minded about the outfits you want them to wear. To help you make a decision, we've rounded up the top trends for maids in 2023:
The romance for retro: The ‘90s are back, more so the satin slip dress. Although it may not be for every body shape, it’s romantic, and elegant comes in a variety of colours.
Royal approval: With our love of Bridgerton and period dramas still going strong, Victorian-style ruffles and layers can certainly look the part on a modern silhouette.
Technicolour dreamboat: Gone are the days when all the
THE PERFECT FIT
Once you’ve found the perfect outfit for your maids, more likely than not, their dresses will require some alterations. Angie Smith from Dare to be Different is a seamstress, designer and tailor with more than 40 years of experience. “I love working with clients of all shapes and sizes,” says Angie. “I love a challenge and provide a seamless service between purchasing a gown and tweaking it to fit perfectly on the day. I offer a no-obligation consultation to discuss what may need to be done to make sure everything is perfect on the day.”

bridesmaids are in one dress colour and style. The mix-and-match look is here to stay, and this has evolved to not just colour palettes, but also textures. Your bridal party will look gorgeous in a mix of satin, velvet and sequin – and so will your wedding pictures.
Standout from the crowd: If your bride squad encompasses a bridesman or people who just don’t like wearing dresses, then why not match in style or colour but opt for a velvet dinner suit jacket, tuxedo, or rock a jumpsuit?

75 DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY
MUM’S THE WORD
The mothers-of-the-bride and -groom are going to feel under the spotlight along with the rest of the wedding party. This added pressure can feel overwhelming as they may feel a lot older than the bridesmaids and possibly wouldn’t have worn occasionwear for many years. These factors can certainly put a strain on what should be an enjoyable experience. As the bride, try to make them feel as reassured as possible, offer support and advice; and as with everyone else on the day, they too should feel comfortable and themselves. To help, three local suppliers provide their top tips and trend predicitons to help ensure your mum feels her big-day best.
“As the mother of the bride/groom, you will be in an abundance of photographs, therefore, it’s essential that you look fabulous, feel confident and that your outfit is timeless. This year’s looks show classic colour combinations of navy and ivory, printed brocade fabrics and classic shapes such as A-line and pencil skirts. If you are opting for something a little edgier, Gill Harvey has beaded, feather-hemmed dresses perfect for a party. Irresistible offers bright shades of coral and lime in their signature bandage stretch dress and bold floral dip-hem dresses for those wanting a fuller skirt.”

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA
Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it. One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com
GRACE LOVES LACE
Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”
Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”
The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.” https://graceloveslace.co.uk

VERA WANG BRIDE
Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.
Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.
Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”
In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32).

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.
Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com
ANDREA HAWKES
British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”
Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come. www.andreahawkes.co.uk

HOP INTO SPRING
What are the latest hair and make-up trends for spring 2023 brides?
This year we are going to see a continuation of the minimalist trend. Whether it be a less structured, effortless look or a sleek approach to an up do, attention is going to be on the dress rather than the hair.
Brides are opting for a sleek centre-parted style finished with crystals or jewels. This style works really well for the those who want to go beyond the understated veil and incorporate hair accessories into their bridal look.
The slick bun will continue to rock strong in 2023. A sleek, middle-parting with a neat knot at the nape of the neck is simple, elegant and exceptionally popular. Sophisticated, clean and fuss-free, brides-to-be are flocking towards this style as it’s super flattering when combined with golden skin.
Up dos are forever a crowd pleaser, but more and more clients are requesting the bridal ponytail. These get a bad rap for being basic, but you can easily elevate this style, it just requires a good hairdresser and a little strategy. The bridal ponytail can be sleek and stylish and by using extensions you can add length.
When it comes to your big-day make-up, neutrals are going to be big this season. A soft base with a romantic, natural glow will suit everyone, and the addition of golden pigment can keep it super sweet and simple.
Aside from glowing skin, a priority for most brides is their eyes. Applying the perfect eyelashes will significantly enhance your eyes, and add length and thickness without over-layering mascara.
It’s time to say goodbye to heart contouring and hello to softer blending. You can play up your bone structure in a way that’s natural rather than entirely changing your face. This is a great technique to employ on your big day, as a beautifully-contoured face will photograph well.
The above was researched and agreed with Evoke.

WHIMSICAL ROMANCE
I’m a spring bride and want to find a dress that’s on-trend. What looks will be popular this season?
There are so many different bridal dress trends for spring brides, such as high necks and long-sleeved lace gowns. These regal trends have had a huge revival after the wedding of Paris Hilton and Carter Reum. Her ornate floral lace Oscar de la Renta gown has inspired so many designers to create similar, gorgeous gowns. These trends will be seen all year round not just for our spring brides.
Another fast-growing trend is asymmetrical necklines. Whether it’s a ballgown, sheath dress, lace or tulle, this neckline looks amazing.
For those of you who aren’t afraid to show off your legs, mini dresses are perfect. This look is ideal for brides who want a more playful style for their elopement, or a second look to party the night away in. There are so many options to choose from, whether it’s fashion-forward and contemporary, vintage-inspired or simple and sleek. There is a mini dress out there for everyone!
Capes are my favourite trend and can be found in both dresses and accessories. These have become an alternative to veils and are ideal for brides looking for something a bit different. Some gowns incorporate detachable capes into their designs to give brides two looks in one, but if you can’t find a dress with a cape already included in the design, then some amazing accessory designers have worked them into their collections, which can be worn with the dress of your choice.
Remember, when it comes to dress trends, don’t be afraid to be yourself and trust your gut.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR
Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists
Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!
The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.
Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.
READ FOOD LABELS
To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or
switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).
WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK
Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.
CURB THE CRAVINGS
No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!
IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE
A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.
HEALTHY SUGARS
Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such
as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.
FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND
Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.
A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP
All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.
Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

HONEYMOON NEWS 93
OF THE BAY On the dock
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.
My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.
HEAVENLY ROOMS
After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.
The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.
KICK BACK AND RELAX
As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.
The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.
GET ACTIVE
For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.
FOOD AND DRINK
The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.
During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.
If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.
EXPLORE
The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).
There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.
BOOK IT
We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95
THE RIVERDown by
This sanctuary nestled in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Thames is ideal for honeymooners, and their four-legged friends and children are also welcome for those wanting to book a family-moon. The tranquil, back-to-nature bolthole, a former Elizabethan coaching inn has some famous neighbours – Hollywood movie star George Clooney and wife Amal live in this quaint village tucked away in the Berkshire countryside.
DO NOT DISTURB
There are 49 individually designed rooms and suites with The Coach House Apartment located in the courtyard being the hotel’s best offering for newlyweds which became my home-from-home for the night. It’s a quirky split-level suite with a separate TV room that doubles up as a second bedroom, perfect if it is a family-moon you’re after. A highlight for me was the large roll-top bath – I dived straight in!
A FOODIE HEAVEN
At the heart of this boutique hotel is the swish Coppa Club clubhouse. The brand is well-known for providing the very best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge all combined into one setting with a private members club feel, without the fee. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night nibbles with riverside views in the restaurant, bar and snug area decorated with contemporary comforts and vibrant pops of colour.
Those passionate about food will love the extensive menus including the all-day, weekend and non-gluten offerings plus grills, grazing plates and sourdough pizzas - a takeaway menu is also offered. Being practically vegan, I tucked into the mouth-watering Coppa burger made with a delicious plant-based patty and cheese served with skinny fries. Other highlights on the menu were the chalkstream trout and the 10oz rib British steak on the bone. The buckwheat and rye pancakes were the perfect way to start my day the following morning at breakfast.
WHAT’S NEW?
The latest addition are the cosy igloos perched outside the large impressive glass-covered terrace lining the garden leading to the river. The best seat in the house, they provide private dining all year round for up to eight people and there are even blankets provided for the chilly evenings.
MADE FOR ROMANCE
Memories can be made at this idyllic, award-winning wedding venue that’s licensed for up to 100 guests for the ceremony. The Coppa Club chefs have created a collection of wedding breakfast menus and the flexible event space can host up to 200 guests for the evening party.
