It's A Winter Wedding Wonderland

It's the quiet season for everyone in the industry now. After the rush of sunny summer ceremonies, everyone is pausing for breath and catching up on essential tasks. But for couples brave enough to opt for an off season do, you can take advantage of some major perks. Winter weddings can be magical and we have some top tips to make the most of the alternative wedding season.

The Barn at Cott Farm

Get in touch with that venue that really made your heart sing but you thought might be beyond your budget. You might be surprised at some of the off peak packages out there.

Suppliers are snapped up for the summer months but mid winter they're much more likely to be able to fit you in. This is the time to assemble your dream team with way less stress.

Stuck for a theme? Winter has its very own style that will help pull everything together. Add a hint of Christmas with cracker favours, baubles and wreaths. Lean in to the green - the foliage is amazing and ivy is also a thrifty option to boot!

The pandemic put a big pause on everything, but now things are back to normal we're ready for a big refresh of, well, everything!

Take part in our Somerset Ceremonies survey online and help shape the future of our service - and your weddings. We want to know it all: what's important, what's not, what little extras would make your day, right down to the mood and style that would make you feel the happiest. Relaxed and intimate? Grand and formal? Fun and modern? We're listening. Find the survey here: https://bit.ly/3D6ljK6

Like our featured photos? Check out more from the shoot and get some great winter wedding inspiration in our blog. Massive thanks to The Barn At Cott Farm team and their trusty suppliers for sharing them with us.

www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk/blog/

Nothing brings you together like a hearty meal with friends in a cosy dining room, safe from the elements. See what your caterer can rustle up from local seasonal produce.

Mulled wine for welcome drinks or toasts? Hot chocolate station for the little ones...who are we kidding - we all want some!

Embrace the dark - sparklers for the photos, fireworks, or how about glow in the dark garden games? Fairy lights and a big stash of warm blankets will make the most of the outdoors too.

Say I Do In Somerset
you're
planning - so are we!

2022: The year of the veil

Well,

hasn’t 2022 just flown by? I can hardly believe it, here we are, fast approaching Christmas. It’s only natural as you reach the end of a year to reflect on all that’s happened as well as what’s to come. For me, the highlight has been CWM senior editor Melissa’s nuptials. Celebrating that amazing wedding day really brought home to me how far we’ve come this year from the dark days of 2020 and 2021 with its lockdowns and restrictions. It felt like the normality we’d been praying for, when many of us had been left plagued with doubt over whether our wonderful world of weddings would ever be back in quite the same way.

There’s even been the usual flurry of celebrity weddings this year, leading the way as ever with trends we expect to see featuring in your weddings very soon, notably on the veil front. There was Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck with the bride dressed in that oh-so elegant Ralph Lauren turtle-neck column ceremony dress and a sleek silhouette with removable veil hood for the evening. Personally, I’m hoping we see more bridal hoods on wedding dresses next year, following on from the amazing capes that made inroads in 2022. Meanwhile, Kourtney Kardashian made pairing a short dress with a long veil a thing when she married Travis Barker. The showstopping cathedral-length veil was personalised with handembroidered flowers and a large image of the Virgin Mary inspired by her new husband’s tattoo.

In September, when we sadly lost Her Majesty the Queen and TV channels were airing wall-to-wall documentaries looking back over her incredible life and service, we were reminded of her wedding day in 1947, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Seeing these images brought me back full circle. Sure, J-Lo’s veil was new and edgy, Kourtney K’s was modern and oh-so personal, but looking at these 70-something-year-old images of our beloved Queen made me realise: Her Majesty did it best! Her breathtaking 13-foot tulle veil attached at the shoulders was symbolic of rebirth and growth after the Second World War and was said to be inspired by Botticelli’s painting of Primavera.

So, enough musings from me! I hope you enjoy this issue where the region’s cake makers aim to inspire with a display of their most showstopping bakes. Plus, head over to our flower feature to find out everything you wanted to know about wedding florals but were afraid to ask.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

PLAY THAT SAX!

Local vocalist and saxophonist Lucy Harvey has won the Wedding Entertainment category for solo, duo or string quartet musicians at the 2022 South West Wedding Awards held in November. The annual awards recognise wedding suppliers throughout the South West who exceed the expectations of their customers by providing outstanding service, crowning these very special wedding suppliers as the best of the best in the region.

Wedding companies covering all aspects of the industry can enter the various categories available, including photographers, stationery, bridal hair and more. Votes can only be placed by couples who’ve used the suppliers for their own nuptials, making the winners very much the people’s choice. Lucy says, “I’m over the moon to have my music and dedication to the industry recognised by the couples I’ve entertained over the 2022 wedding season.”

WINE AND DINE

Introducing Cave Bristol, founded by hospitality veteran and wine specialist Martin Hagen, it’s an online bottle shop specialising in selling a carefully-curated selection of small producerled, organic, biodynamic and low-intervention wines, mixed discovery cases, premium store cupboard essentials and spirits.

Cave Bristol on Gloucester Road opened two weeks before the first lockdown in 2020, but plans quickly had to pivot. Martin kept the store open, operating under government guidelines, but acted quickly to take the concept online. The online store launched soon after with great success offering a selection of properly sourced wines, local cheese and provisions unlike any available elsewhere in the city. Orders were, and still are, delivered by bike in Bristol using zero-carbon.

Martin says, “Choosing wine for your wedding can be a daunting task and it’s commonplace for venues to only allow couples to choose from their wine list, resulting in a lack of choice and poorer quality wine with a large markup. At Cave we’ve had many customers come to us with this problem but there are ways to circumnavigate this issue. One is to offer to pay a corkage fee, then visiting a local merchant or wine expert to select and purchase wines to better suit the occasion, your style and most importantly complement the food.

“The best scenario, of course, is not being tied to the venue’s wine list and this is where the fun begins. We’ve worked with a host of nearlyweds, helping them to select their wedding wine and it’s something we take great pride and passion in. People are generally much more conscious about serving high-quality food and drink at their weddings these days and a good merchant should always be able to help with pairing the menu perfectly, tailoring wines to suit their couples’ palates and finding great value to suit the budget. From whites, reds, oranges and fizz, classical or unconventional there are endless regions and styles to explore.”

SHOP BRISTOL

Bristol’s directory of independent shopping locations has relaunched this year, focusing on locally-made, unique, consciously-created products, for customers who want to support small businesses.

The online directory is a collection of fantastic independents offering a diverse range of products from jewellery to plants, homewares to clothes. It’s a great place to look if you want to support Bristol businesses when compiling your wedding gift list and can find everything you could need to start your married life together all in one place, as well as thoughtful gifts for your wedding party. Whether you decide to shop in store or online, the support for your neighbourhood shops will always be appreciated.

Beck Prior, founder of Prior Shop in Cabot Circus, is spearheading the campaign and after a challenging couple of years, believes shopping local has never been more vital. She says, “It’s so sad to see many small business closing or on the brink. I think it’s incredibly important to stick together to make sure we collectively encourage customers to shop local and save our high streets.”

IN THE

Elizabeth and Jack styled their big day in a gorgeous palette of blues ranging from dark to light Images

Elizabeth met Jack while working at Cineworld. She’d just finished her degree in the U.S. and he was in his last year at university. Although the pair had mutual friends, they’d never met until this point. Elizabeth tells us, “A co-worker told me that she thought I’d really like Jack, and she wasn’t wrong! I’d definitely say it was an instant attraction on my part, but it did take him a few months to ask me out on our first date.”

Jack proposed to Elizabeth on her birthday at The Ivy in Bath. “When we arrived at our table a member of staff asked if we’d like to see the outside terrace, and as we headed out I knew Jack was about to propose. He started: ‘There’s a reason I’ve brought you up here today...’ After that I had tunnel vision until the moment I could accept,” Elizabeth shares. This was actually the back-up plan as Jack had hoped to pop the question on the bridge in Prior Park earlier that morning, but it had closed due to windy weather. But, Elizabeth says, “It didn’t matter where he asked me the question, the answer would always be, ‘Yes’.”

Elizabeth’s sister tied the knot at Clearwell Castle, partner venue to St Audries Park, so she’d known about it for a while. Once she became engaged to Jack, this was top of her list to go and see. “I cried the whole way around,” she tells us. Jack had to work that morning and met her at the second venue appointment of the day. By the time he reached her, St Audries Park was all she could talk about, so they returned later in the week to allow him to see it, and it was done. “We were actually very lucky as we booked our date, 21st May 2022, only a few days before the country went into lockdown,” Elizabeth remembers.

Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day...

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple decided on blue for their palette and with navy as the main base lighter hues were added as accents. This was beautifully achieved with the favours and place names, which were little acrylic cards in three different shades of blue rotated around the tables. Also made from acrylic were the frosted welcome sign, unplugged sign, order of the day and table numbers all with white vinyl lettering, which the bride made herself with her Cricut.

When it came to the flowers, Elizabeth had something super-simple in mind for her bouquet. “I went with mainly white flowers, specifically garden roses, which the boys also wore as buttonholes, with a little bit of light blue coming through via the thistles,” she explains. Elizabeth had collected lots of different crystal vases for the centrepieces and their wedding florist filled them with gypsophila, light blue delphiniums and lunaria. The smaller vases were used to hold tea lights – autumn pearl by Yankee Candle. Larger candles adorned the top table, which helped to fill the reception space with fragrance.

The big-day bake boasted three tiers and was decorated in icing to look like waves with a blend of different blues. The cake maker also made some lunaria for it to match the floral arrangements.

LOOKING THE PART

Elizabeth looked stunning in Jess by Eva Lendel. “As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one,” she says. “I knew I wanted something clean, simple and elegant, but didn’t imagine it would be as incredible. It was the first one I tried on.” The bride paired the gown with a cathedral-length veil and in the evening wore a crown adorned in pearls, moons and stars. She was also able to remove her overskirt for a trip down to the beach. The pièce the résistence was a pair of glorious sparkly Jimmy Choos.

Jack wore a dark navy suit by Mark Darcy along with a cream waistcoat and navy paisley tie. The groomsmen were dressed in the same suits, but wore theirs with the matching waistcoats and light blue paisley

29 REAL WEDDINGS

ties. The bridesmaids meanwhile wore floor-length Dessy dresses in midnight navy with cowl neck.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Live singer Lucy from Lula Weddings performed and helped to create the right atmosphere during the canapé and drinks reception. Then, during the wedding breakfast, the couple set up a board with a first dance sweepstake. Everyone was asked to pick a song that the couple might have chosen for this special moment. It turned out to be Sleeping at Last’s version of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). There was also a photo booth for guests to enjoy in the evening – “Everyone had a blast with it,” Elizabeth says.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The ceremony is the part of the day that comes to mind for Elizabeth as her highlight. “We’d been waiting more than two years to get to this point, so I was emotional throughout the morning, but once I saw Jack I was just so happy. He woke up with no voice though, so when we met at the end of the aisle and he croaked ‘hello,’ it was a big surprise,” she shares.

The bride continues: “All of our suppliers were absolutely fantastic but Courtney, our wedding planner, was such a star. She had everything in hand and was a pleasure to have around on the day.”

Abi and Tom created a relaxed feel for the big day, with a focus on candles and flowers in warm autumnal tones

BURGUNDYbliss

Abi and Tom met online and talked for a few months before taking the plunge and meeting up for a first date. They soon discovered much common ground such as playing sport, their taste in music and a love for travel. Abi says, “I was attracted to Tom’s great sense of humour, his positive outlook on life and his outgoing personality.” Meanwhile, Tom tells us, “Abi immediately caught my eye with her warm smile and deep green eyes. I fell in love with her sense of adventure, kind and caring nature and passion for the outdoors. We complement each other in so many ways and she makes me a better person every day.”

Tom proposed on a remote beach in Western Australia at sunset. The couple had been living in Melbourne for a few years and took some time off work to travel around the country before they moved back to the UK. Tom popped the question towards the end of the trip, which was a great way to round off their time in Australia and also meant they could celebrate their engagement with friends and family once back home.

The pair fell in love with Brympton House the moment they saw it. “Straight away we could imagine celebrating our special day there,” Abi says. “We loved that there was a different space for each part of the day, each with its own character. The ceremony space was classic and romantic, with wooden pews and arched windows like a church. It was also ideal that many of our family and friends could stay overnight so we could all have breakfast together the next morning.”

Here, Abi tells us more about their wonderful wedding day...

33 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore the Scottie V2 dress from Made With Love Bridal.

I knew I wanted a fitted dress, and after trying many on I chose this one because I hadn’t seen any others with this type of lace that almost looks like beading. In the evening I added a silver sequin jacket to keep warm.

The bridesmaids’ dresses featured a sequin-embellished bodice and tulle skirt. They wore burgundy and blush versions to complement the flowers and colour palette

The ceremony space was decorated with candles in glass lanterns lining the aisle, and pillar candles on the windowsills surrounded by greenery, which made the space feel romantic and cosy. I accessorised with ivory glitter shoes from Charlotte Mills and pearl jewellery from Lily & Roo. I also wore a pearl veil from Blossom & Bluebird to complement my jewellery and embroidered lace pattern on my dress
34

We had some lovely personal touches on the day, such as the bunting made by Tom’s mum to hang across the aisle with our names and wedding date sewn onto it.

Tom wore a Moss Bros slim fit navy black check three-piece suit. This was paired with a burgundy woollen tie and monk-strap brown shoes. All the groomsmen had the same outfit and the groom also wore special cufflinks that I’d had given him as a present on the morning of the wedding.

We had a selection of canapés served during the drinks reception, followed by a delicious three-course meal, finishing up with a favourite of sticky toffee pudding. Later on in the evening we had a paella and chocolate fountain to keep everyone going on the dancefloor.

There were lots of floral displays around the venue featuring dahlias and roses in burgundy and blush, complemented by plenty of fresh greenery and other blooms, which matched my bridal bouquet perfectly.

Tom designed all of the stationery such as our table plan and order of the day, which were displayed on large easels with real flowers arranged around them. He also designed the menus and table names, which matched our invitations and save the date cards.

A harpist played contemporary songs during the ceremony and drinks reception, including All Of Me by John Legend as I walked down the aisle, which created the perfect romantic ambience.
35 REAL WEDDINGS

We named each table after a place that is special to us, such as the beach where Tom proposed, our first date spot, and our favourite holiday destinations. As a surprise, our parents had made a display of photos of both of us through the years, which was another lovely personal touch.

In the evening we had live band Happy Hour, who played a great selection of classics from the 80s to present day and kept the dancefloor full. We both love Coldplay, so our first dance was to Green Eyes, and the band finished their set with Yellow, which we weren’t expecting so this was a special moment for us.

We had a photo booth in the evening, and we asked guests to stick their photos in our guestbook along with a message, which have been great to look back on!

We went to Greece for 10 days on our honeymoon, visiting Mykonos, Paros and Santorini. We went a couple of days after the wedding, so it was great to be able to relax and spend some quality time together as newlyweds. We really didn’t want to come home!

The dream team

Rachael and Josh have been the perfect duo since the day they met and long may it continue Images courtesy of Em & Woz Photography

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Rachael and Josh met while he was completing his final year at Plymouth University and she’d just graduated from Plymouth St Mark and St John’s University. They were both working at a fast food restaurant in the middle of town, and whenever they were on shift together, everything would run perfectly – they were the dream team! “Josh is very quiet and laid back, where’s I’m not... opposites really do attract,” Rachael shares.

Josh proposed in October, 2021. When he rebooked a stay at a secluded shepherd’s barn in Westbury-sub-Mendip they’d fallen in love with earlier in the year, Rachael didn’t suspect a thing. “We arrived, unpacked the car, brought the blankets outside and snuggled up looking out at the view,” Rachael tells us. Such a romantic spot to pop the question!

Initially the couple planned to have an elopement-style wedding as they’d just bought and renovated a house and neither much cared for the idea of being centre of attention. So, Rachael began looking for suitable venues around the UK and Wales and eventually narrowed the list down to two in Bristol and set up visits. “The first one we visited was Berwick Lodge and as we approached via the long driveway we both fell in love. We met with Magdalena, one of the wedding coordinators, and were made to feel at ease straight away. No question or query was too much, and in fact, our plans changed about 1,000 times within the first month or so, yet still nothing was too much trouble,” Rachael explains. They set the date for 8th August, 2022.

Here, the bride shares her memories of the big day...

GREEN AND GOLD

“Josh’s auntie surprised us with favours. They were personalised packets of wildflower seeds and Welsh love spoons for all our guests.

“We wanted a rustic look, so our centrepieces featured hessian and thin ropes, with flowers similar to the bouquets and buttonholes. They also included Welsh slate and candles. I knew I wanted faux flowers so that I could keep my bouquet in the house after the wedding. Josh’s mum and I went to Homesense to look at greenery and white flowers, and after playing around with this combination, we added gold leaves taking inspiration from Pinterest.

“For our place names my maid-of-honour took the design from our invitations and had it printed onto business cards, which were held by corks decorated in gold leaf. She’d collect these throughout our friendship, embarrassingly and impressively there were a lot of corks!”

DINING DELIGHTS

“The night before the wedding, Josh and I had the six-course summer taster menu with wine flight. When we initially booked the venue this was going to be our elopement-style wedding breakfast, but when the numbers increased we had to change plans.

“A few weeks before the wedding we had a taster experience with the venue and knew we’d have to have the chicken as this is where our story started! We chose croquettes to start as they’re Josh’s dad’s favourite and sticky toffee pudding for Josh’s mum.”

WEDDING DRESS STRESS

“I went dress shopping twice. I had a clear vision of what I wanted but nothing was matching up to my expectations. All the ones I tried on were nice, but they weren’t very me. Then, Josh’s mum picked out a strapless mermaid-style dress with sweetheart neckline – the complete opposite of anything I’d ever wear. We knew it wasn’t my style but I tried it on anyway, and I was speechless. They say when you know, you know. The only thing I wanted to change was the lack of straps, so the consultant quickly whipped up some potential sleeves to show me how it could be adapted, and that was it. It was the one and I wouldn’t have even given it a second glance.

“We didn’t want our wedding party to match, we think people should have their own choice in what they wear to a wedding and not be forced into something they may be uncomfortable in.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“I only started to panic 10 minutes before the wedding. We weren’t dressed and my hair wasn’t finished as we’d basically spent hours chatting, listening to music and dancing around! Then our dresses wouldn’t do up. It was the hottest day of the year and the room was sweltering!

“One of the highlights for me was during the wedding breakfast when I

looked around to see all of the people we love in one room. Seeing them meet for the first time, getting on instantly, sharing jokes, funny stories and even napkins to mop up the tears was so heart-warming.

“Earlier in the year both of Josh’s parents lost their mothers. During the father-of-the-groom’s speech, he mentioned both of them and the lights behind him began to flicker. Then, later on, friends were taking pictures of me on the balcony and a green orb kept appearing and following me as I spun round. I’ve never been one to believe in this sort of thing, and it could all be coincidental, but it’s nice to think that they were there with us.”

ROMANCE IN MADRID

“We had a mini-moon in Madrid for four days, which was a gift from Josh’s aunt. We left Berwick Lodge by 10am to get home, picked up our bags and headed to the airport, which was a lot! The moment we arrived though it was incredible. We were told there was a mix up with the rooms so we were sent to the bar and given complimentary drinks while they sorted everything out. When we checked in, we discovered that they’d been creating a little surprise of champagne and a brownie to congratulate us.

“We’re big foodies and love trying new things, so before we left we made sure to try everything and anything we wanted. We ate our way around Madrid and still found time to walk around, visiting museums, parks and landmarks. We had the best time.”

FROM THE ALBUM OF... Demmi and Grant

Demmi

and Grant were born in the same hospital, on the same day, “So technically we could have met at birth,” Demmi tells us. Their families lived in the same small village and they went to the same primary school, they even have a photo of them together at six years old. But then, Demmi went away to boarding school and Grant went to a local school and they didn’t meet again until they were 15. Demmi got a job in the local shop and Grant would meet her to walk her home at the end of her shift. When they were 16 he asked her to be his girlfriend and they’ve been together ever since. Now, they’ve purchased a house in the village they grew up in – “It’s come full circle,” Demmi says.

Grant proposed in the Dominican Republic on the beach, in a decorated hut. He only waited until the second day of the holiday as he’d had to hide the ring and was constantly worried Demmi would find it. He asked her dad for her hand in marriage, so they immediately FaceTimed and the bride-to-be spent the rest of the holiday on cloud nine.

They chose Old Bridge as the all-important venue for their big day and set the date for 2nd July, 2022. Demmi explains, “Old Bridge is a family-run venue, they’re so relaxed and let you plan the day you want. You can pop in whenever you want, ask all the questions you need to and they really open up their home and family to you, not only for the day, but in the lead up too. We had to postpone twice due to Covid and the team were so lovely, so

“The weather will never be perfect. It’s always too wet, too hot, too windy, but the day will still be perfect.”

understanding. They listened to me cry, helped and supported, they were incredible.”

ROMANTIC ROSES

Roses are Demmi’s favourite flowers, so these were the main feature of the floral arrangements. They adorned the simple and elegant cake too, which was served for dessert following the wedding breakfast. These beautiful blooms also sat in acrylic vases at the centre of each reception table.

Tables were named after Beauty and the Beast characters in honour of Demmi’s favourite Disney film and the guests had two place names each, one their full name and one their nickname. They were also treated to a scratch card each in memory of the bride’s nanny, who most mornings would get hers at the corner shop. They were even purchased at the same one.

PRETTY AND ELEGANT

Demmi looked stunning in a Willow by Watters dress. “I didn’t choose the style, it chose me,” she says. Sleeves were added in the same lace as the bodice and the bride fell in love with two veils. She finished the look with a Swarovski bracelet, a gift from her dad, and Swarovski earrings, gifted by Grant.

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE...

A string quartet played as guests arrived, throughout the ceremony and during the welcome drinks, performing film scores and modern hits. Later, singing waiters surprised everyone. Soon, guests were up on the chairs dancing and waving napkins.

An acoustic singer performed while evening guests arrived and a live band played in the evening – “Some didn’t leave the dancefloor,” Demmi remembers.

MEMORIES TO TREASURE

Demmi shares, “Just before we walked down the aisle, me and my dad looked at each other and smiled, it was a moment he’s always dreamed of. Then, seeing Grant cry as I walked towards him is something I’ll never forget.

“I did the speeches as Grant didn’t want to. Instead he gave me a beautiful letter in the morning, it felt so personal and beautiful. I think there’s too much pressure on grooms to do a speech. Our first dance, singing to each other was another highlight. After postponing twice, we just said: ‘We finally did it!’”

FROM THE ALBUM OF... Olivia and Steven

We take a sneak peak at the wedding album of these lovely local newlyweds Images courtesy of Kibsy Captures

Olivia and Steven met through mutual friends and when the time came Steven proposed in a car park! They tied the knot on 23rd April, 2022 at Thornbury Golf Centre, which was everything they’d dreamed of in a venue.

The couple opted for a Scottish theme in honour of the groom’s side of the family. Guests were treated to traditional sugared almonds as well as whisky bottles for their wedding favours. The family were a great help in styling the big day with

Olivia’s mum creating the centrepieces and flowers, while her brother, who has autism, made the place and table names. One of Olivia’s favourite elements was the big-day bake by Debbie’s Bakes and Cakes, “It was incredible,” she tells us.

The bride says, “I felt incredibly nervous the morning of the wedding, but I knew it was the best thing I’d ever done. Exchanging rings was definitely the most memorable moment for me.”

Inspired by the colours of autumn, local networking group Bath Weddings got together to celebrate the season

Images courtesy of Weddings by Gould Photography | Video courtesy of Room 5 Photography

Manager of Bath Weddings networking group

Richard Wareham was keen to take advantage of the bright autumnal blooms and colours earlier in the year and set about getting the gang together to reflect this stunning time of year in a boho-themed bridal shoot. “I’ve developed a rapport with a number of top suppliers in the area via the networking group, which we started on Instagram in the summer with the aim of getting various industry professionals working together outside of weddings,” Richard explains.

With Parish’s House delighted to host, it was then important to build the elements around its gorgeous grounds and homely cottage setting located just outside of Bath. Richard continues, “With the focus on bridal prep every element needed to be on the same wavelength. Hair design ideas were exchanged via Pinterest, dresses were chosen to suit the boho vibe, and colour palettes were shared with the florist and cake maker. I was confident our photographer and videographer would work their magic to get the most out of everyone’s hard work.”

EXPECTATIONS

There’s cakespiration aplenty in this display of showstopping big-day bakes

The wedding cake: sweet treat, reception dessert or showstopping centrepiece? Who’s to say it can’t be all three? Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, the big-day bake has been an enduring tradition and wedding stalwart since couples first said “I do.” Its origins are thought to date back to Ancient Rome when a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride’s head to signify good fortune. Thankfully, you won’t be forced to wear the delicacy today, so it’s something that’s well worth thinking about. The modern cake maker is now more versatile than ever and can whip you up a sweet showstopper big enough to take the place of your wedding breakfast dessert, or be served at your evening reception. Handing around the slices is also a lovely way of making sure you get to see all of your guests. Alternatively, there’s the option to have

a spectacular tower made up of cupcakes or macarons, even doughnuts if you prefer. And don’t forget, a cheese stack is a great choice if you fancy something savoury.

What we love best about the modern wedding cake is its capacity to act as a work of art and form a key focal point in your venue styling. Displayed on its own table, adorned in your wedding flowers, set against a neon sign or flower wall backdrop it’ll be a feature to remember, helping to bring your theme together. Super-talented bakers can even decorate these centrepieces to illustrate your own unique love story. So, it’s with their showstopping styling quality in mind that we bring to you a showcase of breathtaking bakes with help from local talented cake makers.

Flowers are absolutely integral to shaping your big-day theme and can’t help but bring an air of romance to proceedings. Whether you’re all for the more is more approach, or prefer a minimalist interpretation, you might have some burning questions when it comes to this element of your to-do list. Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding is here to help, with assistance from some of the region’s talented wedding florists.

FLORAL FASHIONS

Clare Wilder from Clementine Moon Floral Design says, “The trend for neutrally-coloured flowers is set to change with couples opting to add other hues such as lilac into the mix for an up-to-date twist. Nearlyweds may also choose monochrome palettes with shades and tones of only one colour used throughout.

“The use of British flowers will increase as a more local and sustainable option, with couples increasingly likely to ask their florist about the provenance of their blooms.

“Shower and cascade bouquets will rise in popularity and we’ll see a rise in single variety bouquets for bridesmaids, all roses or all sweet peas for example. But, installations such as dramatic arches or hanging displays are likely to be bigger than ever as couples want to make a statement with their décor to create the perfect atmosphere as they celebrate with their nearest and dearest.”

CROWNING GLORY

I like the idea of wearing flowers in my hair. Do you have any ideas?

The first thing to consider is how you can pair the flowers in your hair with the overall look of your

wedding, while reflecting your own personal style. Flower crowns are the perfect accessory for a whimsical boho wedding. Bring out your inner Titania with a bold and full statement crown packed with theme-matching blooms and plenty of greenery. It’ll be bursting with life and you’ll be giving off full forest fairy vibes.

For something more subtle, opt for a flower halo with delicate blooms and buds in soft hues. You can even adapt this to the season by incorporating berries for a winter wedding for example. As with your bouquet, smaller versions can be created with a single variety or greenery for your bridesmaids – gypsophila crowns look super-cute on flowergirls.

If you’re not entirely sold on the idea of a crown, how about wearing blooms in your hair as an accessory? Individual flower heads tucked into a plait looks ethereal and is also well-suited to the boho vibe. Alternatively, a small posy of flowers to mirror your bouquet tucked into a low bun instead of a sparkly hair slide, lends a softer side to any look for a timeless feel.

SHOWSTOPPERS

Bouquets, centrepieces, accessories... what haven’t I thought about yet?

Here’s some food for thought...

 Pew or aisle ends. We love cute little posies tied to chairs or single blooms such

as blousy hydrangeas. You could even hang a mini vase containing a single stem on the end of each aisle. For a more theatrical effect, create the illusion of walking through a meadow with loose and whimsical arrangements placed on the floor, or take the glamorous route with arrangements placed on plinths lining the aisle.

 Moon gate or arch. These symbolise your everlasting love and can be moved from ceremony to reception venue to use as a backdrop for the top table.

 Decorate your cake. Get advice from your cake maker and florist, they’ll know which varieties can and can’t be around food.

 Buttonholes. For a groom who wants to stand out as man-of-the-moment, make a statement with your buttonhole or use it to reflect your heritage or personality.

 Corsages. Help your mums to feel more involved in the bridal party with a design to complement your bouquet.

Flower wall backdrop for your top table or photo booth.

 Hanging displays. These breathtaking installations are ideal if you need to fill a vast overhead space such as in a marquee. Totally on trend and a fabulous focal point.

 Adorn your table plan and any other signage to tie everything together.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES

I’d like to keep my bouquet forever. Is this even possible?

Rachel Ruddle from Flower Preservation Workshop says, “The simple answer is, ‘Yes.’ Flowers make a huge impact at a wedding and you’ll spend a lot of time researching floral inspiration, planning what your arrangements will look like, ultimately holding your bouquet close, smelling their fragrance and marrying the love of your life. So, it’s an emotionally sad moment when your wedding flowers start to die. Those adorable blooms that you carried down the aisle and clutched for hours will be destined for the recycling bin if you don’t decide to save the memory of them forever.

“While preserving your flowers can be an investment for so many of our brides and grooms, it’s a priceless keepsake to kickstart a lifetime of memories together. We capture those moments within our luxurious range of paperweights made with crystal-clear resins with a glass-like finish, all hand created in Somerton, Somerset.”

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

Aside from being breathtakingly beautiful, there’s good reason flowers are popular at weddings. Check out our symbolic suggestions.

Anemone – anticipation and protection Gypsophila – everlasting love | Carnation – pink symbolises gratitude, white represents pure love | Cornflower – prosperity and friendship | Gardenia – gentleness and joy Chrysanthemum – happiness, longevity and devotion | Daffodil – new beginnings and hope | Daisy – innocence and loyal love Freesia – friendship and trust | Hydrangea – gratitude and understanding | Iris – faith, valour and wisdom | Lavender – devotion, serenity and grace | Lily – purity | Lily of the valley – sweetness and purity of heart Lisianthus – confidence, charisma and charm Orchid – refinement, thoughtfulness and charm | Peony – romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life | Protea – courage and diversity | Ranunculus – radiant charm and attractiveness | Rose – red symbolises passionate love, pink symbolises admiration, and white symbolises purity, while yellow represents friendship | Sunflower – dedicated love | Sweet pea – blissful pleasure | Tulip –perfect and deep love

UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Should my dress have a bearing on my choice of bouquet?

Do take a photo of your wedding dress with you when you head to the florist for your consultation. Particularly when thinking about your bouquet it will help them to get an idea of what they can do to complement it. For example, if it has lots of intricate detail and a sleek silhouette, you’ll want to avoid a bouquet that’s going to obscure the incredible design and overwhelm you. Your florist may also suggest flower varieties that come in the best hues to suit the colour of your gown, whether it be white, ivory, blush or something entirely different. This will all help to elicit gasps from your congregation and spouse-to-be as you walk down the aisle, plus you’ll look even more breathtaking in photos if your bouquet is right!

THE BEST OF BRITISH

I’d love to have locally-grown British blooms at my wedding. What can you suggest?

Aizel Finch from Yalham Hayes says, “Choosing a wedding florist who uses British blooms is, of course, essential. That florist will be able to provide guidance as to what flowers are available.

“Essentially, couples should select a florist who has the style of flower arranging that matches the look and experience they envision for their wedding, as well as having the ethos of using British-grown flowers even partially. Sometimes, it’s not possible to use only British blooms.

“We always recommend and arrange with flowers that are in season. If you’re getting married in early spring for example, we indulge our bridal bouquets with hellebores, hints of spirea, varieties of fritillaries, anemones, geums and white alliums, with tulips to match and some eucalyptus to finish off. This takes into consideration colours and whether they work together, as well as making sure they suit the wedding’s theme.”

GROW GREEN

How can we keep sustainability at the forefront when choosing our flowers?

Do your research and look for a local florist with sustainability as its central ethos. These folks will be doing everything they can behind the scenes to make sure their practices are as green (pun intended) as possible. For example, they’ll be using local growers to ensure the miles your flowers travel are kept to a minimum, thus reducing their carbon footprint.

Sustainable florists will also be cutting down or eliminating completely their use of single-use plastics. Floral foam or oasis, now rarely used, was a terrible culprit but these days you’ll find most designers using eco-friendly alternatives such as moss. You’ll also be able to spot a sustainability-conscious florist when they wrap

their bunches in paper rather than cellophane. There’s plenty you can do yourselves too to ensure you’re being kind to the environment. Repurposing your arrangements from ceremony to reception ensures you cut down on the overall volume of flowers, meaning you get the most out of them while being kind on the budget. Don’t waste your beautiful blooms when the celebrations are over. Arrange with loved ones in advance who’ll be taking what home. Your stunning centrepieces, for example, are a lovely way to say “thank you” to those who’ve been particularly helpful to you throughout the planning process or on the day itself. Leave no bloom behind! Sustainability can even be extended to the vessels your flowers sit in. Hire rather than buy vases as this ensures they have a long life and don’t end up in landfill straight away. Or you could source vintage vases from charity shops and re-gift them along with the centrepieces to ensure they live on.

Finally, you may want to consider using dried flowers. These are totally on trend and always in season! They’re also easily converted into stylish home décor after the event, which you can treasure forever as a reminder of your big day. One word of caution though, do check that they’ve been naturally air-dried without the use of chemicals and toxic dyes, otherwise you could lay waste to all your good intentions.

SNUGGLE UP

How can I give my wedding venue a warm, winter-wonderland atmosphere to suit my January nuptials?

When thinking of winter weddings, people often jump to icy blues, silver and white, but in my opinion these can look cold and uninviting. If you’d like your venue to exude feelings of cosiness, opulence and luxury, think about layering up different textures, such as shaggy sheepskin rugs against warm-toned natural woods. Think also about layering your

lighting with atmospheric fairylights (always choose a warm LED for a cosy effect) and flickering candlelight at varying heights. Also, don’t be shy with colour. Winter wonderland doesn’t have to mean light, cool colours; sometimes deep and moody tones, set against lighter elements, sparkling glassware, and twinkling lighting create even more impact and can draw your guests in.

TAKE NOTE

How can we make sure our wedding stationery is sustainable?

You’d think it would be easy to find a wedding stationery supplier who works sustainably. After all, all paper is recyclable, right? Wrong actually. Any papers coated in wax, plastic or foil can’t be recycled. So, if you want your stationery to be sustainable, avoid metallic finishes, glitter backgrounds and acrylic invitations. You could even go one step further and ensure your stationery supplier is using FSC-certified cards and papers. This means they’re sourced from carefullymanaged forests.

Nature and our environment is our biggest source of inspiration here, so we try to do all we can to protect them. All of our designs are made to order, meaning we don’t hold or throw away any unsold stock. Our paper products are all FSC certified and the inks we use are eco-solvent, ensuring our stationery is suitable for conventional recycling. We give you the option to have your designs printed on recycled stocks or to have then created and sent to you digitally if you want to send e-invites.

RING, RING

We love the idea of a guest book, but know it can be a bind to get people to sign it. Is there any way around this?

There is! The Audio Guest Book, allows your nearest and dearest to leave recorded voicemail messages on repurposed, original, 1970s rotary telephones. Posted straight to your door along with its own handmade wooden sign, it’s easy to set up and captures the atmosphere and excitement of the day as well as immortalising special loved ones while giving them an interactive experience they won’t forget.

The Audio Guest Book telephones come in a variety of colours to suit all themes and look iconic in any setting. We’ve also found that the enagement of the voicemail format seems to be far higher than a traditional hand-written guest book, with some coming back to us contatining hundreds of messages. On top of this we’ve received excellent feedback from our couples saying how they “laughed and cried” while listening to the recordings. As well as receiving all your messages digitally, we can also send you a glass message in a bottle USB for you to keep forever.

GREEN FINGERS

We’re trying to make our big day as sustainable as possible. How can we extend this ethos to our wedding rings?

Your wedding ring is a symbol of love and commitment to your partner: an ethos that can reach beyond your relationship to the natural world and the communities responsible for sourcing the raw materials. There are so many ways of making your wedding rings beautiful through and through. For example, our stock rings are made using recycled silver, gold or platinum and we make bespoke items using Fairtrade gold or refashion your own family gold into a new piece.

Gemstones too can be ethical and sustainable. We use fully-traceable Fairtrade sapphires and precious gemstones. Our engagement rings are set with alluvial Ocean Diamonds, found on the ocean floor by expert divers, then cut by artisan cutters. These beautiful stones are sustainable with provenance.

Our white gold items aren’t rhodium plated, as the plating process involves toxic chemicals and we strive to have minimal environmental impact from our workshop practices. This means that the white gold items we produce will remain the same colour without needing expensive re-plating, instead we clean and polish all our pieces free of charge to keep them looking stunning.

IN THE ZONE

Our wedding reception will be in our venue’s marquee. It’s such a vast space to fill and we’re worried about it feeling a bit sparse. How can we overcome this?

I love decorating marquees as you really can make them your own and get creative. With any venue of this type you can bring it to life with hired props or call in the professionals to help decorate and set up for you. I recommend zoning your marquee, here are a few ideas:

 Entrance décor. Set the tone and line the entrance with milk churns, shepherds crooks and floral jars. Add a welcome sign and order-of-the-day too.

 Gift display. Create an area where guests can leave their cards and gifts. Think lanterns, suitcases, wooden crates and a personalised guest book.

Ceiling décor. We suggest hanging hoops, foliage or floral ladders, fairylight installations, paper lanterns or folded material draping.

 Seating area. Loved ones will appreciate this! Think vintage rattan chairs and add rugs, cushions, lanterns, and some blankets displayed on a ladder or in apple crates.

LET IT SNOW

How can we give our wedding day stationery a wintry twist?

You can add that romantic, wintry twist by using white on white, perhaps with a hint of sparkle for that frosty feel. Keep it all white or add subtle greens such as grey spruce, eucalyptus, sage or cineraria if you wish, or even icy blues or pastels such as pale lilac can bring a subtle hint of colour.

Unless a traditional Christmas feel is what you want, I’d suggest avoiding reds, greens and tartans. An alternative would be a rustic, fireside feel, which can be achieved by using cinnamon sticks, twigs and pine cones, perhaps with hint of metallics and colours such as deep reds, burnt orange and dark spruce on Kraft or corrugated Kraft card.

Favours for each style can come from mini crackers or gift boxes decorated according to your chosen theme with place cards slotted into pine cones, sprayed or painted white, tipped with snow, or left natural.

Gaynor Page, https://topikki.co.uk

Cake display. Add décor and styling to the items you have already – your big-day bake offers the perfect opportunity. Why not add some shutters, arch or draping behind?

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

ICE PRINCESS

I’m planning a winter wedding and need some ideas for my bridal make-up look. Can you help?

Jane says: Winter is a magical season for a wedding and a great time to be more creative with your make-up incorporating bolder colours, shimmer and party glam. Here are my top tips to steer you along the right path. 

Harsh wind, severe cold, and central heating can all dry out the skin, causing sensitivity and dryness. Extra care of the skin is required during the build up to your day ensuring you look flawless in photos. 

Invest in a good skincare routine. Exfoliate and moisturise regularly and for an extra boost, add a facial oil. 

Use a lip scrub once or twice a week and be sure to apply a rich lip balm to avoid lips drying out. 

Choose a hydrating primer underneath your base to remain radiant. 

Opt for a light-reflecting combination of powder- and cream-based make-up as this will keep your skin hydrated throughout the day and looking flawless in the changing winter light. 

Choose waterproof eye liners and mascara as cold, chilly winds can make you teary in outdoor photographs. 

SULTRY SCREEN SIREN

I want to wear a glamorous Hollywood-style beauty look for my big day. How can I achieve this?

Gillian says: To achieve this luxurious classic look, combine sensational wavy hair with luscious bold lips and big beautiful eyes. This timeless make-up has transcended the years and what better place to wear it than down the aisle on your special day. When you look back at all the classic Hollywood beauties, they all have one thing in common, a flawless complexion. Creating this poreless, flawless skin makes for the perfect base for your Hollywood lips and allows your eyes to shine. Combine this with a statement feline flick of liner to make your peepers pop and complete with a deliciously bold matte lip.

CONTACT OUR EXPERTS

Consider a bold lip. Red or rich berry lipsticks can look particularly lovely on a winter bride and stronger colours last longer too. 

Use cream-based blushers and highlighters, which are easier to apply and look more natural in winter light. 

Avoid strong build-up of bronzing and contouring as this looks unseasonal. Add just enough for additional warmth to the skin. 

Adding highlighter or a shimmer lifts the skin, however resist the temptation to sprinkle glitter everywhere!

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

The four-star Aztec Hotel & Spa sits in the ideal location for a city break whether you’re after some pre-wedding pampering with your bride tribe or some mini-moon rest and relaxation. Conveniently nestled just off the motorway in Almondsbury, it lies within easy reach of Bristol and Bath and offers great access to all the sights and delights. However, if you prefer to just get away from it all and enjoy being cocooned in contemporary luxury, as I did, Aztec offers the ultimate experience.

CHILL TIME

After a three hour drive the bestie and I were well and truly ready to hit the spa! So, once we’d benefited from our early check in and been welcomed by the friendly staff we said a quick “hello” to our lovely twin room and grabbed our fluffy hotel robes and slippers to make our way down. This was an exciting prospect given it was awarded Best Boutique Spa by The Good Spa Guide earlier in 2022. I was booked in for a massage, so we were shown to the new Relax Lounge to await my therapist. Here, we found an amazingly tranquil haven complete with refreshments, armchairs and even loungers. We both made a beeline for the latter and that’s where I left my bestie, Natalie, literally living her best life when I was collected for my treatment.

Along with French skincare brand Caudalie, TempleSpa offers a professional spa menu of body treatments. It’s one of my favourite brands and its products are known for offering the perfect blend of British sophistication and Mediterranean soul. One such treatment is My Kinda Massage, perfect for all you nearlyweds out there needing to unwind from the stress of wedding planning. There’s a 25-minute back or shoulder and scalp version or a 55-minute full body massage on offer. Here, you get to choose from three scents: Drift Away with frankincense, lavender and patchouli; In Good Spirits with ginger, lemon and bergamot; and Work It Out with juniper, lavender and cypress.

TIME FOR A DIP

Having retrieved an uber-chilled Natalie from the Relax Lounge, we

chill out

headed for the pool, which is what the hotel likes to call, “A proper size.”

This is a fair description as often spa pools are a slightly odd shape that prevents you swimming lengths. Here though you can, and it’s divided down the middle so those who wish can swim and others can bob around, which was our preferred way to enjoy a dip. There were even foam noodles on hand for those less confident in the water.

The Jacuzzi proved the place to be for many visitors, and you didn’t have to wait long for the bubble cycle to come round, which often isn’t the case elsewhere, leaving you to wonder if it’s even working! Here the bubbles were going longer than they weren’t – heaven!

We also thoroughly enjoyed using the other facilities such as the steam room with amazing benefits of menthol, and the sauna. Reclining on the poolside loungers, we became so relaxed that we stopped talking long enough to completely zone out – a rarity.

WINE AND DINE

Having torn ourselves away from the spa just in time for dinner, we headed into The Curious Kitchen, which has recently been awarded Best Luxury Hotel Restaurant in the World Luxury Restaurant Awards 2022. It was easy to see why.

There’s a brilliantly wide range of dishes to chose from and I ordered from A Taste Of The Season menu. I opted for pigeon, roasted beetroot, chicory, pickled blackberry and salted sumac granola for starter. This was followed by flat iron steak, Cornish sea salted fries, and Café de Paris butter; while the Black Forrest verrine for dessert was divine. I should also mention Natalie’s chocolate bread and butter pudding, which was quite the showstopper when it arrived!

I was also mightily impressed with the incredible range available at breakfast, inspired by the hotel group Daniel Thwaites’ Northern roots. Everything was made fresh to order even the continental options, which added to the luxurious experience.

So, good was the food throughout our stay that we treated to ourselves to an afternoon tea before we hit the road again the following day, resolved to be back.

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

88

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.
