ust like that, it’s the end of another year. I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the quicker time seems to fly by. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing about my upcoming wedding, and here we are over a year later. If you’ve recently become engaged and the wedding feels like it’s forever away, trust me, it will be here before you know it. The best piece of advice I can offer is to enjoy the planning process and celebrate the small things. If you’ve said yes to the dress or booked that special venue that you’ve had your eye on, take the time to celebrate – go out on a date, treat yourselves, and make a scrapbook of those key moments. Once the wedding is over, you’ll love having those memories to look back on. It’s been wonderful seeing the wedding industry flourish again this year. I’ve loved seeing your nuptials, businesses beginning to return to normal, and new companies opening their doors, so to celebrate and end the year with a bang, we’ve gone all out with an issue full of must-see venues, photography and wedding dresses. Happy planning!

Paper Swan is a bespoke wedding studio offering luxury stationery in Manchester, Cheshire, and across the UK. Owner Lucy Williams tells us: “After leaving school, I decided to follow my heart and enrol in a graphic design course. I graduated and have spent more than 15 years bringing creative ideas to life. My experiences working across different mediums have led me to become obsessed with beautiful textured papers, creative design, and wedding stationery. REAL WEDDINGS

ONCE UPON Danielle and Iffan incorporated their love of light blue and dusky pink into their big-day styling at Stirk House Images courtesy of Fish 2 Photography

D

anielle and Iffan met at work. “It was my first day in critical care; I asked him for a handover and he was rude to me,” says Danielle. “He was so rude, I decided not to speak to him again, but we kept running into each other at work and eventually started talking. We met again at a work’s do, sparks started to fly, and the rest is history!” Iffan proposed on Danielle’s 30th birthday. “It was the best birthday present ever,” shares the bride. “He took me away to the Lake District and got down on one knee in our hotel room. He asked me the question I had long been awaiting, and of course, I said yes!” Read on to see some of Danielle’s favourite moments from their big day... 29

I loved Stirk House right away as it’s so picturesque. I adored the function room, and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. Our favours were personalised candles and chocolates. We also created kid-friendly favours for the children.

Emily from Flowers for Keeps created our flowers and decorations for the church.

Eat Cakes By Susan provided our three-tiered wedding cake.

Our transport was a lovely vehicle from Malvern Wedding Car.

We decided to have Asian-style food, which Stirk House created for us. 30

REAL WEDDINGS

Iffan opted for a beautiful suit from Next. We had ties and pocket squares made by Swagger & Swoon, as we wanted Iffan to coordinate with me and the groomsmen to match the bridesmaids.

My gown was a design called Rousseau by Maggie Sottero. I knew I wanted a long train with lace and sparkles, but when my mum saw this dress, she said it was the one. It wasn’t a style I would have picked, but she was right! As soon as I put it on, it was magical. I accessorised with Thomas Sabo earrings, a necklace and bracelet and a silver star and pearl hair vine from Jon Richard.

Pianist Liz Hendry from Live Piano Ltd played during the reception and wedding breakfast. I’m a big Disney fan, and she kindly played instrumental Disney songs for us. We also had a photo booth from Reflections Entertainment where people could take funny photos or make GIFs.

The bridesmaids all wore the same design from For Her and For Him in a dusky rose colour. I loved the look of the dresses and the girls said they loved them too.

Iffan was nervous when he got to the church, but I was super excited.

My hair stylist and make-up artist did an amazing job, especially since there were nine of us! 31

Our top tip for any couple about to tie the knot is to stand back, take it all in, and enjoy it! It goes so quickly, so try to remember every detail.

The speeches were epic! My best friends did a joint speech for me. They did a role play of how I first told them about Iffan and him asking me to go on a trip of a lifetime to South America. They had all the guests laughing, and what they said about me was so meaningful.

Nobody was expecting us to do a choreographed routine for our first dance; everyone was in awe, and people said it was so romantic. For our second song after the first dance, we got everyone on the dancefloor, and it was so much fun.

For our honeymoon, we went to Cape Town in South Africa. Iffan organised it all and spared no expense. He knew I’d always wanted to go on a safari.

REAL WEDDINGS

H

eather and Joe met while studying at university. “Although we were on different courses, we lived together in the same accommodation during our first year,” says Heather. “We were friends for a year and got together the following summer. I always found Joe attractive, particularly because of his bright blue eyes. He was always the funny one in the group, and we would spend a lot of time together as friends.” Joe proposed on Christmas Eve in 2021. “We had been together for over six years, but it was still a surprise,” shares the bride. “We were out on our annual Christmas Eve dog walk, and as we cut through some woodland, Joe ran off ahead to make sure we could get through a small field at the end. He then came back and said it was all fine, so we carried on walking. Up ahead in the field, there was a tree, and Joe told me there was a surprise waiting for me. As I approached, I could see there was something hanging off one of the branches. Once I got closer, I could see it was a Christmas bauble with the words, ‘Will you marry me?’ on it. When I turned around, Joe was down on one knee with a ring! Joe had handmade the bauble himself, which really showed how much effort he had put into the proposal. He had thought about making sure it was somewhere private but also somewhere we could visit often, as it was not far from our home. Every year, both sets of parents come and stay with us for Christmas, so it was even more special that we were able to celebrate with everyone together that night.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Bartle Hall was the first wedding venue that we visited,” explains Heather. “The long driveway with the big gates and the stunning country house captured our hearts as soon as we arrived. We visited a few other venues in the area, but none of them gave us the feeling that we got at Bartle Hall. We also loved the fact that we had exclusive use of the entire venue, including the country house, coaching barn, and surrounding gardens. This meant we were able to have our ceremony in the house and our reception in the coaching barn. In addition to this, the bridal party were able to stay on-site the night before, where pizza and prosecco were provided by the venue. Not only was this a great place to have fun the night before the wedding, but it was also perfect for bridal prep in the morning.” The ceremony room was decorated by both Sophisticated Events and Creative Venue Stylist. “Creative Venue Stylist provided the white Chivari chairs, which were decorated with a white satin ribbon,” recalls the bride. “We also had a moongate that was at the end of the aisle. This was made with greenery and had white and lilac roses added to match our colour scheme. It made a beautiful backdrop for us to get married in front of and was later used behind the top table. Sophisticated Events provided pedestals with two matching large flower bombs for the end of the aisle, which complimented the moongate perfectly.” For their favours, the couple gave their guests mini candles. “These were a nice keepsake and added a personalised touch to the day,” adds Heather. “The candles were made with a vanilla and lavender scent to match our lilac/lavender theme. “Our table plan was ordered from an independent supplier on Etsy,” continues Heather. “We purchased it in a simple black and white design so that we could decorate it with artificial flowers that matched the rest of our decorations.” Heather and Joe made flower bombs for their centrepieces. “These were placed in tall vases and wrapped with white satin ribbons,” reveals Heather. “On the remaining tables, we had floating candles in three tiered vases and a matching floral wreath around the bottom. Sophisticated Events were fantastic at matching the flowers used in the centrepieces so that everything came together perfectly. They really went above and beyond to make sure everything was exactly how we wanted. “Our bouquets were made by Flowers by Jade,” adds the bride. “We went for lilac flowers and white roses mixed with sprigs of greenery.” 35

REAL WEDDINGS

Their wedding cake was made by Heather’s godparents. “It was three tiers,” says Heather. “We wanted to incorporate two of our favourite flavours, lemon drizzle and chocolate, so we had a mix of both. It was decorated with edible white lace and topped with edible roses.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a ballgown with a cathedral-length train,” shares the bride. “I chose this design because I wanted something that was classic and would never go out of style. It was simple, but also very elegant. I accessorised with a tiara and my mum’s veil from when she got married 37 years ago. Luckily, she had taken good care of it, and it was in perfect condition! I wore low-heeled open-toe shoes from Charlotte Mills made from pearlescent leather with a hint of glitter.” Joe opted for a three-piece suit from Cheshire Menswear. “It was navy and made from lightweight wool, which was perfect for our summer wedding,” explains Heather. “My bridesmaids chose Morilee dresses by Madeline Gardner. They were made in the same floor-length lilac chiffon but had different necklines.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a caricaturist that we hired via Warble Entertainment,” reveals Heather. “He was a huge hit with the guests, keeping them entertained between the ceremony and wedding breakfast. People really enjoyed posing with their partners and were able to keep the drawings as a keepsake, which everyone said was a great idea. In the evening, we had a DJ provided by Dancefloor Couture LTD. We were able to add all the songs we wanted to a portal beforehand, and we even had the option for guest requests. A few days before the wedding, we talked through exactly what we wanted with the DJ and gave a bit of context as to what our guests would enjoy and what sort of songs would get everyone on the dancefloor. This meant that when the day came around, we could just relax and have fun. “We also had a magic mirror photo booth provided by Make It Stand Out,” continues Heather. “This was a great addition that came with a range of props that our guests loved taking silly photos with. Not only did the photos print out straight away for guests to keep, but copies of every image were also collated in a small scrapbook by the company for Joe and I to keep. This was really fun to look through the following morning!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The day went so fast, but we were both on cloud nine,” remembers the bride. “The entire day was filled with love and laughter, and we had the most amazing time celebrating with our family and friends. Once we had exchanged vows and were about to sit down to sign the wedding register, I noticed a spider on the wall, so I had to ask Joe to move it before I sat down. It definitely broke the ice from the formalities of the ceremony and had all the guests laughing! “My mum had arranged for my horse to be brought to the venue for some wedding pictures,” adds Heather. “Ever since I was a little girl, I always said that when I got married, I wanted to have my horse Pepper there on the day. Once we came out of the ceremony, Joe and I headed out to the front of the house to have a quick break before joining the rest of the guests on the lawn, and that was when Pepper came walking down the driveway. It was an amazing surprise, and we were able to have some beautiful photos that I can cherish forever!” 37

vie and Alex met through mutual friends. “We went for a meal in Windermere for our first date,” says Evie. “For our second date, we went on a boat trip across Lake Windermere to an aquarium. It snowed heavily the whole time we were there, and it was beautiful.” Alex popped the question during Evie’s favourite holiday. “He knows I don’t like a fuss and how much I love Christmas, so he proposed at home on Christmas Day,” shares the bride. “It was perfect, and we were both over the moon.” Read on to see some of Evie’s favourite moments from their big day... 41

We knew we wanted a barn wedding and Park House Farms was perfect. It was the first and only barn we viewed, but we knew it was right for us. When we visited in the winter, it was being used as a working farm, and as my gran said, it took some imagination, but we could see how perfect it would be.

We visited Alison Thompson Catering at her home before the wedding. She has a large food truck and a lot of staff for outdoor catering. We decided on a three-course meal, and Alison made sure everything was perfect! The food was amazing, and the staff were kind and efficient, and everyone commented on the food.

I purchased my dress from A Family Affair in Kendal. The staff were amazing! I accessorised with a detailed veil and belt, and Alex wore a Mark Darcey suit.

It was 30 degrees and by far the hottest day that year, so it was really special that everyone got to make full use of the venue and spend lots of time outdoors.

Lauren Young designs bespoke wedding stationery using watercolour paintings. “Each set is unique to the client,” says Lauren. “I bring together my love of painting to create special stationery, and I thrive on bringing wedding themes and personal lives into my work; this may be a pet, a favourite place, or a venue. I can beautifully capture your wedding venue using delicate brush strokes to create your own bespoke venue portrait.” Lauren will set up at the location of your choice within the wedding

venue. Depending on your package and how you would like to run your day, she can either work from a list of guests or groups provided by you, or your guests can choose to visit her throughout the wedding day. She can paint individuals, couples, or groups of up to five guests in one illustration. Each illustration can take between five and 20 minutes, depending on how many people are featured. At the end of the day, she will take all the illustrations home so she can add any finishing touches. She will then post these back out to you so you can send them out to your guests as wedding favours.

STYLED SHOOT

T

he Deaf Institute was the backdrop for this alternative styled shoot. “We wanted to showcase this Grade II-listed Manchester building as it recently opened up its calendar for weddings,” says Beth Atton de Sa from ALT Events Co. “The Deaf Institute is now an internationally recognised alternative music venue that was once a school for the deaf. I really wanted to create a shoot within a city centre venue. I love old buildings with an interesting story and eclectic décor. We used jewel tones throughout the shoot, turned the contrast right down and used minimal décor to highlight the aesthetic of the building. “The shoot brought together a great collection of skills, products and people,” adds Beth. “I’ve been in business for a year as a solo alternative wedding planner with an ethic to highlight the lesser-known places, people, and ideas in the wedding industry, with a focus on the unique and outlandish.” 53

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries EXPERT ADVICE

www.janephotographyservices.com

Our experts solve your problems

JUST THE TWO OF US I’m getting married soon, and I’m worried that I won’t be able to look natural in our photographs. What should I do? When it comes to preparing for your big day, there are many things to consider, including how you present yourself in front of the camera. Although a few people will say practice in front of a mirror, I say don’t! You might be surprised by this answer, but the more you practice, the more preoccupied and stressed you may become. Instead, focus on being present in the moment and letting your natural emotions shine through. Hiring a professional wedding photographer is a great way to

ensure that your special moments are captured. When choosing a photographer, it’s essential to research their style and portfolio. An experienced supplier will know how to guide your poses and capture your genuine smile. This way, you can relax and be yourself, knowing that your love and happiness will be beautifully documented. So, there’s no need to worry! Remember, the most important thing is to be authentic and let your love shine through your photos. Jane www.janephotographyservices.com

Ask for information about what Christmas décor and lighting will be at your venue. The décor should complement the venue without being too distracting. For example, if you’re planning a wedding in December, a festive feel is the goal, but it still needs to be a wedding and not a Christmas party. Lighting is key at this time of year when the day is short. Think lots of twinkly lights and candles and a beautiful festive feel without being gaudy. Here at The Glass House, we use a neutral white and metallic theme that works well with the venue, and we fill the windows with fairylights that provide a beautiful backdrop to ceremonies and wedding breakfasts. SNOW IS FALLING We’re looking for a venue that will be able to help us achieve our Christmasthemed wedding. What should we ask the wedding team before booking?

59

MIND-BLOWING MAGIC We will be having guests of all ages attend our wedding, and are thinking of hiring a magician to keep them entertained. What should we look for before booking a supplier?

www.joemather-photography.co.uk

When considering hiring a magician for your wedding, here’s what you should look for: Experience: Check the magician’s experience, especially in performing at weddings. Ask for references and reviews from previous wedding clients. For example, I have over 25 years of magic experience and will use my expertise to help make your big day perfect. Style: Make sure the magician’s style matches the atmosphere and theme of your wedding. Some specialise in comedy, while others focus on illusions or close-up magic. Here at ACMAGIC, I offer a blend of close-up magic and humour that’s sure to leave your guests smiling. Customisation: A good magician can customise their performance to fit your wedding’s unique needs and preferences. Professionalism: Ensure the magician is punctual, well-dressed, and conducts themselves professionally. They should be easy to communicate with and responsive to your questions. Insurance: It’s a good idea to check if the magician has liability insurance, especially if they’ll be performing in a venue with expensive equipment or delicate decorations. Demo or live show: If possible, attend a live performance or request a video demo of their act to get a sense of their skills and how they

engage with an audience. Contracts and pricing: Review the contract carefully to understand the terms, pricing, and any additional costs. Make sure all details are clear and agreed upon. Availability: Confirm the magician’s availability on your wedding date and discuss the duration of their performance. Backup plan: In case of unforeseen circumstances, ask if they have a backup plan or a replacement magician available. CAPTURE THE MOMENT We’re unsure whether to book an engagement shoot. What are the benefits?

60

www.westviewphoto.co.uk

I advise anyone thinking of booking an engagement shoot to go ahead and do it. Not only are they a lot of fun, but it’s the perfect chance to meet your photographer, learn how they work, and know exactly what to expect from your wedding day. From your photographer’s point of view, it’s brilliant. As much as you learn how a photographer works, we also learn how you work as a couple, how you interact, your likes and dislikes, and everything in between. One of the biggest things about being a wedding photographer is being able to build a strong rapport with your couples. Without a doubt, an engagement shoot is the best way to do this. The more you know your photographer, the more relaxed you are. The more relaxed you are with your photographer, the more relaxed all of your guests will be. The more relaxed everyone is, the better the pictures will be. Another thing to consider is that time can be a huge constraint on your wedding day. Perhaps you want some killer shots in the mountains but don’t want to leave your guests for an hour. Instead, an engagement shoot is the perfect chance to get those shots without feeling like you are MIA for too long on your wedding day. Make the shoot personal to you; perhaps go on your favourite walk or visit your favourite village or town. Your pictures can then be used for invites, displays at the wedding and guest books.

Adding a winter theme to your wedding photos can create a magical and cosy atmosphere. Here are some ideas to help inspire you: Choose a palette that reflects the season, such as blues, silvers, whites, and icy tones. Incorporate winter elements like evergreen branches, pinecones, and snowflakes into your decorations. Use artificial snow or snow spray to create a wintry ambiance. Opt for rich, warm fabrics like velvet, faux fur, and wool for attire and décor. Select blooms that are in season during winter, such as roses, amaryllis, or poinsettias. Serve hot cocoa, mulled wine, or warm cider to keep guests nice and cosy. Give your guests winter-themed favours like blankets or personalised ornaments. You could also add an elegant touch to your décor by incorporating ice sculptures.

EXPERT ADVICE

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR How can we incorporate our Christmas theme into our décor without it being over the top? Christmas is such a beautiful and touching time of year, which means we need to try and incorporate all of the festive spirit into one day. Sometimes couples want Christmas weddings to be bigger and better than ever, and others don’t want Christmas to take over the show. The festive season in general tends to be over the top, but that doesn’t mean that your wedding has to be; as a matter of fact, it can be quite the opposite. Christmas is full of love, family, bright lights, fairytales, and, most importantly, some of the most beautiful colours, all of which come free of charge. Imagine that your day is full of the people that you love, that you care about, and, most importantly, the person you’re about to marry. The day already has all of the things that you need to make it one of the most memorable days of your life. Try and add personal touches that make the

day about you, such as seasonal colours that are special to you, such as gold, red, and silver. As an experienced wedding planner and venue dresser, I understand how important the finer details are. In the past, I have created icy-themed weddings, using blues and whites throughout the décor. I have also created an elegant Christmas-themed wedding using gold, white, and lots of lights, making sure the finer details are touched upon. Make sure everything follows the same theme, such as the cake and room décor. To simplify, you don’t have to stress over one of the most celebrated times of the year. Keep it simple and keep it you, and the rest will fall into place. Jessica O’Brien www.vintageeventsmanchester.co.uk

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY We’re looking for a DJ for our upcoming wedding; how can we narrow down our decision? Start by determining how much you’re willing to spend on a DJ. This will immediately eliminate some options and focus your search. Seek recommendations from friends, family, or your wedding planner. Personal referrals can be the most valuable. Look for DJs with experience in wedding entertainment and remember weddings require a different skill set than club DJing. Schedule meetings with potential DJs to discuss your vision. Here at DJ CHRIS G, we will insist on a one-to-one meeting to ensure you get the perfect entertainment package. Read reviews and testimonials from previous clients. This can provide insights into their professionalism and performance. For example, you can see what my happy wedding clients had to say on my website. Ensure the DJ can accommodate your musical tastes and any special song requests. Inquire about the DJ’s equipment and setup. They should have quality sound and lighting equipment suitable for your venue. Here at DJ Chris G, we are able to provide you with the very best equipment. From lighting and music to indoor-safe special effects, we’ve got you covered. Review the contract thoroughly. Ensure it covers the agreed-upon services, timeline, payment schedule, and any additional costs. Confirm their availability for your wedding date and the hours they will be playing.

If possible, see the DJ perform at another event to assess their skills and interaction with the crowd. Trust your instincts. Choose a DJ who not only meets your criteria but also makes you feel comfortable and confident in their abilities. Book your DJ well in advance, as popular ones tend to get booked quickly, especially during the wedding season. Chris Guttridge www.djchrisg.co.uk 61

LOOKING YOUR BEST

Local suppliers share the latest trends to ensure you look your big-day best

W

ith trends constantly changing and the added pressure of looking your best, we understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. To help make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some of the region’s top suppliers and asked for their tips and trend predictions for 2024…

BRIDAL BEAUTY When it comes to wedding make-up, I’ve seen more brides and their bridesmaids using a softer-coloured eyeliner in their waterline instead of the typical black or dark brown. I have been using the Makeup By Mitchell’s All Smudge No Budge Eyeliner Pencil in the shade Turnt, which is a gorgeous toasty light brown shade. There is also a rise in clients wanting a soft, smokey wing rather than a sharp and defined line; it’s so flattering on everyone! It’s super easy to do as it’s smudged, not sharp, and is followed by longer lashes to really open up your eyes. I’m also loving the hydrated and plump skin trend. I’m a huge believer that soft skin comes from within, so drinking water and even booking a round of facial treatments before your big day is a great way to ensure your skin is looking its best. If your skin is healthy, then you can use lighter coverage products such as the NARS Light Reflecting Foundation, which is a gorgeous hydrating formula that feels like it enhances your skin. Plus, it’s long-wearing, so what more could you want for your big day? Balmy lips are also a firm favourite at the moment. I’m finding brides and their parties aren’t loving full-coverage lipstick on their big day. The Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Lip Tint in Bare Pink is my absolute dream product. I have used it for years. Using it with a lip liner for a little definition and added colour is a great alternative if you want a low-maintenance lip that gives you a bit of coverage without being super bold. DRESSED TO IMPRESS Here at Willow & Wilde Bridal, we have seen several dress trends beginning to emerge for 2024 weddings. Retro glamour, with a nod to vintage styles, is on the rise. These designs have been modernised with on-trend detailing and design features. Another key trend is multiple bridal looks for the day. Couples are starting to expand on their wedding with two- or three-day events, which means a few different looks, including short evening styles and modern jumpsuits. A revival of traditional fabrics such as taffeta, organza, and duchess satin will be featured throughout the upcoming season. We think that colourful dresses will also be popular for brides-to-be who want to stand out and break the norm of a white wedding. Caroline Crompton www.willowandwildebridal.co.uk

HAIR CARE HERO There are several hair and make-up trends emerging for 2024. For your make-up, the less is more look is still popular, with brides opting for a timeless look that they’ll love for years to come. We’re also seeing more defined but natural brows and blush tones being used throughout the look. When it comes to your wedding hair, vertical buns are all the rage right now. We’re also seeing sleek chignons, ponytails, and Hollywood waves continuing to be popular. Yasmin Schwitzer www.yasminschwitzer.com

LOOKING YOUR BEST

JUST FOR YOU Here at Erica Stacey Bridalwear, we believe that you don’t have to follow current trends and craft our gowns for each individual bride. We understand that every bride is different and we can make any style, design, or dress size in any colour for your big day. If you would like something different, why not consider the below to create a bespoke wedding dress? Customise your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress: Using a family heirloom and adding your own ideas to it can be a special way to design your own dress. It can be based on the original design or completely remodelled like our real bride, Hollie. She brought her mum’s 1981 wedding dress, and we used the main fabric as her dress lining, so it was inside, and only she knew it was there. We created a beautiful champagne strapless gown with a soft chiffon balloon sleeve overdress, embellished with trailing floral embroidery and motifs. The overlayer could be shortened and worn at other special events, and maybe at a future family wedding! Alternative-coloured wedding dresses with floral prints and embroidery: Why not choose a colour other than ivory? Our real bride, Marion, chose a soft ombre grey silk georgette with bespoke floral and leafy embroidery in the most exquisite colour palette. She wanted us to design and handcraft a unique heirloom wedding gown that can be passed down to her daughter in years to come. Interesting shapes and embellished sleeves: Why not choose a wedding dress with sleeves? It could be floaty angel sleeves, cap versions, off-the-shoulder or a removable pair of sleeves that will change your look after the ceremony or for your first dance. Our bride, Louise, chose beautiful beaded embroidery sleeves with trailing leaves and flowers, which complemented the Art Deco-style beaded trim around the hemline. It was perfect for her summer wedding but would also suit a candlelit winter wedding.

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty

H

annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.

Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 78

There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.

INTERVIEW

How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.

What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin

The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 79

Beauty

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best NATURAL BEAUTY I don’t wear a lot of make-up normally. How do I create the perfect big-day look while still feeling like me? I get asked this question quite often from brides who want to look glamorous and flawless for their wedding day but still want to feel like themselves and not a completely different person. The way to create a perfect look without totally changing your face is by focusing mainly on your eyes. Opt for a light shimmer and smoky look by using soft browns rather than black. It’s best to use a Kohl pencil to create the eyeliner look, as opposed to a gel liner, and smoke the pencil out with eyeshadow to soften the look. Lashes look amazing and can still be natural. A popular look that most natural brides like is half-wispy lashes instead of a full-glam look. Something more subtle yet not too full-on. Create a light contour to slim and define the cheekbones, and add a pop of cream blush. The light contour will be seen in photos, but in real life, it still looks natural. The cream blush is dewier, which looks better for brides who like the no-make-up look. If you aren’t a big fan of full-coverage foundation, I would suggest using a tinted moisturiser or adding a bit of moisturiser to your foundation for a lighter coverage. Just conceal any blemishes with a concealer, and you will have flawless-looking skin without the feel of a heavy mask. Rachael Dutton www.rachaeldutton.co.uk

ALL EYES ON YOU

Here at Brandon May Hair, we encourage a good hair care routine, especially in the run-up to your wedding. Start your routine early to allow plenty of time for your hair to grow in a healthy way. Use professional products, weekly masks, and in-salon treatments alongside a trim every 10 or so weeks, depending on your hair length. As long as you ensure you have cut less than what’s grown, you’ll see a difference. Cut down on heat styling and use the correct protection when doing so! This is super important and will ensure your colour lasts better as well. Speaking of colouring, ensure you get your stylist to use a bond builder, such as Olaplex, to help protect your hair when colouring. Be careful not to change your colour from dark to light to dark again and again, as this is a fast way to dry out your ends. Last but by no means least, choose your stylist wisely and ensure you’re both on the same page about your hair goals for the big day. The team at Brandon May Hair www.brandonmayhair.com 80

Mane ATTRACTION

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be

M

odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.

People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.

How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.

What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding

process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
