FLOWER CROWNS FOR UKRAINE Claire Cowling of Suffolk-based Thrive Floristry (www.thrivefloristry.com) created this stunning headdress as part of an appeal to help victims of the war in Ukraine. “I really wanted to show my support personally and, together with a group of fellow florists, we decided to be part of a charity campaign to raise funds through our floristry skills,” she explains. Fellow florists around the country have created flower crowns and vinoks, a traditional Ukrainian headdress, and posted photographs of them to raise money for the work being done to support those in need in the war-torn country. Claire’s vinok was inspired by the traditional values of reusing what Mother Nature provides and includes a mix of fresh and dried materials in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, “It was such a joy to make,” she adds. As a special thank-you, Claire is also providing instructions for all those that donate, so they can learn how to make their own flower crown. TIME FOR TEA If you’re looking for the perfect tipple for your big day or a deliciously sweet treat, look no further than Cambridgeshire-based Pinkster gin. Pinkster Gin Jam uses gin-soaked raspberries left over from the production process and is ideal for adding that extra something special to an afternoon tea reception or something slightly stronger, like a moreish gin ‘n’ jam cocktail. The bulk of raspberries used in producing Pinkster are recycled as Boozy Berries and those that don’t make the cut are now being used for Gin Jam. With minimal wastage and sustainability too – it’s a win, win! Visit www.pinkstergin.com

Surrounded by 250 acres of glorious parkland, prepare to be wowed as you arrive down the sweeping driveway to catch your first glimpse of the beautiful, landscaped gardens and Jacobean manor house. Within the well-kept grounds, you’ll find the stunning Grade II listed barn. More than 400 years old, with original oak beams and exposed brickwork, it has been lovingly renovated to provide a flexible space for weddings while retaining its traditional character and charm. Fairylights add sparkle to the vaulted ceilings in the dedicated ceremony room which includes hand-crafted tables, elegant voile drapes and a choice of backdrops for your ‘I dos’. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, you can get married in the gardens and explore the wider estate grounds to discover a treasure trove of romantic spots for those all-important just-wed shots. Make the most of the picturesque setting and enjoy a drinks reception on the front lawn, with its glass sculpture and views of the pond. Celebrate afterwards with a wedding breakfast for up to 120 guests and evening reception for as many as 240 in the main barn, complete with stage and built-in bar. There’s a rear courtyard too, perfect for the evening food or taking time out from dancing the night away. With an authentic beauty all of its own, you can add as much or as little as you like to the venue décor to make it your own. Offered on an exclusive, three-day basis, the venue gives couples the freedom to choose their own suppliers with plenty of time to set up and style the barn, relax and savour every moment. WE LOVE… the spacious Victorian farmhouse on site, available for hire on a self-catering basis for a two-night minimum stay. With five large bedrooms it can sleep around 10 people – perfect for family and friends or the bridal party to get ready.

This Norfolk gem has a unique character for a big-day celebration to remember. Set in its own garden with a gravel courtyard at the front, the redbrick Grade II listed barn boasts a stunning vaulted ceiling made with North American pitch pine, thought to date back around 300 years. The walkway down to the gardens is great for fab photos and the parkland beyond provides a picturesque backdrop throughout the changing
seasons. Although not currently licensed for ceremonies, you can host your wedding breakfast here with up to 140 people and invite an extra 40 for the evening reception. Surrounded by countryside, but only a 10-minute drive from Norwich, it offers the best of both worlds – country charm and easy access to the beautiful city with its major transport links.
CURDS HALL BARN, LITTLE FRANSHAM 07377 138 882 | www.curdshallbarn.co.uk At the end of a sweeping driveway, deep in the heart of the Norfolk countryside, discover this wedding hotspot. Surrounded by 12 acres of parkland and fields, with areas of mature woodland, a lawn, pond and uninterrupted rural views, it’s a photographer’s dream. Combining rustic charm and modern facilities, the light and airy main barn is the venue’s showpiece. Dating back to the 17th century, whitewashed walls, vaulted ceilings, contemporary lighting and original beams create a magical atmosphere. Big, glazed doors allow the light to flood in and there’s underfloor heating too, so it’s great for weddings all year round. The adjoining Woodshed has a cosy, intimate feel with darker wood cladding and atmospheric lighting – the perfect blank canvas 26
for a romantic, intimate wedding. Both are licensed for ceremonies and you can celebrate afterwards with up to 120 guests, plus 80 more for the evening reception. With long, rustic tables for the wedding breakfast and plenty of space for a band and dancefloor, you can party the night away in style. Although Curds Hall Barn is a dry hire venue, many facilities such as heating, lavatories and a bar are provided, leaving you to focus on the personal touches and decorative details to make the day your own. What’s more, if you’re planning to stay over, there’s onsite accommodation just a short distance from the venue in the lovingly converted Old Coach House or you can camp out in bell tents or tipis in the nearby parkland for a night under the stars. WE LOVE… that you can say ‘I do’ under the shade of the old oak tree or on the lawn with the open-fronted cartshed as your backdrop.

Woodland WONDER
REAL WEDDINGS
Wellington Wood in Norfolk provided the perfect romantic spot for Ruth and Sam’s al fresco wedding Images courtesy of Vicky Plum Photography
O
utdoor lovers Ruth and Sam met online and hit it off straight away. “After a couple of dates it was clear to both of us that we were on to something special,” reveals Ruth. Their romance hit new heights on date five, when Sam asked Ruth to be his girlfriend as they were climbing Mount Snowdon during a camping trip in Wales. Their relationship blossomed and when it came to the proposal, Sam chose another panoramic location and popped the question on a clifftop in Cornwall while they were on
holiday in January 2020. Ruth knew it was going to happen at some point as they’d already chosen the ring. “However, the time and place were a complete surprise,” she adds. They set the date for October 2020, but after Covid wrecked their original plans, they decided to go ahead and get married in their local registry office with just their immediate family and postpone their humanist ceremony and reception until September 2021. Read on for Ruth’s account of their romantic, chilled celebration … 31

We had the most amazing personal ceremony, complete with tree planting, hand tying and readings. Our little dog Ruby was guest of honour, and even walked down the aisle with us.

We trusted our florist Natali e completely and the flowers were absolutely gorgeous. She made beautiful seasonal woodland arrangements for the ceremony area, bouquets and hairpieces.
“After lockdown and not being able to see people for such a long time, we just wanted everyone to be able to relax and sit down together.”
After the ceremony, we walked with our guests through the woods to the giant hat tipis and cut the four-tier ‘cheese’ cake.
We had four long tables and sat with all our friends and families and our pup Ruby had a special seat in between us! 33

REAL WEDDING
A
shared loved of the countryside and laid-back lifestyle helped cement the bond between Charlotte and James. They’d known each other for years and had been in the same friendship group since going to Kesgrave High School together. They kept in touch through mutual friends and met up socially, but it wasn’t until after Charlotte graduated from university and moved back to Suffolk, that they started dating.
POPPING THE QUESTION Romance blossomed, they bought and renovated a house together, got their black Labrador puppy Rocco and just as James was thinking of popping the question, Covid threw a spanner in the works. He was then unexpectedly faced with the challenge of planning the proposal during lockdown, without Charlotte catching on. The magical moment happened while out on a romantic, snowy walk with Rocco in January 2021. “It was a complete surprise,” reveals Charlotte. “While I was trying to get a cute photo of Rocco in the snow, James decided it was the perfect time and place to get down on one knee!” He was obviously right because she said ‘yes’!
THE TIME AND PLACE “Due to the many lockdowns and stories of other people having to cancel their wedding plans, we thought long and hard about the when, where and how we’d get married. In the end, we decided that we wanted an intimate, family affair anyway, to reflect our easy-going, outdoor-loving lifestyle,” explains Charlotte. She grew up in the small Suffolk village of Levington, where her parents still live in her childhood home. With strong links to the community, getting married in the village church, with its breathtaking views of the River Orwell, was a no-brainer. “We were fortunate enough to have family friends who owned a smallholding just opposite, which provided the perfect setting for our outdoor reception,” she adds. They tied the knot on 28th August 2021 and opted for a relaxed, boho-style country theme with bright floral, dahliainspired orange, pink, yellow and red hues with pops of cobalt blue.

REAL WEDDINGS LOOKING THE PART When it came to choosing her dream dress, Charlotte knew immediately when she found the one. “It was the only dress I tried on and I fell in love with it straight away, which was a relief considering all the shops having to close during the pandemic,” she recalls. It had lace and pearl details, a small train, flowing sleeves and she completed the look with earrings and a necklace from Oliver Bonas and a gold and pearl bracelet passed down through the family. The bridesmaids, Charlotte’s sisters Jess and Anni, wore dusky pink dresses while James looked dashing in a navy tail suit with the two bestmen, his brother Elliot and best friend Jacob, and both dads in suits to match. As an extra personal touch, they provided a selection of homegrown floral handmade buttonholes or corsages for people to choose from as they arrived at the church. Their wedding rings were especially meaningful as they made them themselves at the Woodbridge Jewellery Workshop using gold from rings inherited from James’ great grandmother. Charlotte recalls, “We had such a wonderful time and learnt so much from both Rick and Maggie, who run it. We loved the romance of creating each other’s rings and enjoyed it so much that we booked in again and James made my engagement ring while I made cufflinks for him to wear on the big day.”
SETTING THE SCENE “The theme for the wedding centred around my love of growing flowers, with dahlias being a firm favourite of mine. I grew most of the blooms at home, which we then arranged in large clusters for the table centrepieces and also used for the buttonholes, bouquets and to decorate the altar,” explains Charlotte. The windowsills and entrance of the church were decorated with baskets of living herbs including fennel, mint, rosemary, thyme and myrtle, a traditional favourite for weddings. Drawing inspiration from their Mediterranean holidays, the aisle was also lined with olive trees. “We felt this suited the atmosphere of St Peter’s Church with its rustic brick flooring, white-washed walls and wooden seating inside,” adds Charlotte. The trees were later given as gifts to members of the main wedding party. In keeping with family tradition, they lit a unity candle during the ceremony, as Charlotte’s parents had done at their wedding. “They lit their family candle, and we then took the flame from that to light ours,”
TIME TO CELEBRATE The reception was held on a neighbour’s plot of land, just a short walk away from the church. A long, banquet-style table was set up in the centre surrounded by festoon lighting, paper lanterns, tall arches and the olive trees which had been transported from the church. Through their links with scouting, the couple were able to borrow marquees as a wet-weather backup, but luckily the rain held off so they could dine outside. Charlotte says, “To complement the relaxed, boho-style feel we opted for woodblock-printed tablecloths and napkins, which my mum and I made, wicker placemats and bottle baskets, coloured glass goblets and big jars of homegrown flowers. The festoon lighting and an array of coloured candles added to the ambience during the evening.” The food was a delicious mix of Mediterranean and Greek influences with sharing platters of local meats and cheeses, homemade bread, chutneys and an Eton Mess buffet for dessert with homemade meringues, chocolate brownie torte, fresh seasonal fruit and cream. In the evening they had a Greek barbecue of marinaded lamb and spatchcock chicken served with salads and flatbreads. Charlotte adds, “Our family friend 39
Janet Cox ran a catering company and when we met to discuss menus, we knew immediately that we were on the same page and had a shared love of al fresco dining. We were incredibly lucky to secure a booking with her as it turned out to be the last wedding she catered for before retiring!”
THE PERSONAL TOUCH Guests were given packets of wildflower seeds as favours to reflect Charlotte’s passion for gardening and as a big sweetlover too, they also provided a table of jars filled with a selection of all their favourites for everyone to enjoy. James’ mum Pauline made the three-tier cake, based on her much-loved Christmas recipe, and Charlotte helped decorate it with textured royal icing and a ring of olive leaves on each layer. It was topped with a small crystal vase from her parents’ wedding cake, the cake knife was an heirloom too, used at family weddings and christenings along with the lace tablecloth and round table. Charlotte adds, “We had a long and leisurely lunch with lots of chatting and laughter and it was lovely to see each other after not being able to socialise much over the previous year. After dinner, James and his bestmen had curated a playlist which kept us dancing long into the night.”
“We loved just sitting back during the meals, surrounded by those we love, listening and watching everyone interacting and having a good time.” – Charlotte THE LOVE LIST Photography, Thetford Photography, www.thetfordphotography.co.uk | Bride’s dress, Monsoon | Hair, Vogue Hair & Colour Studio, www.facebook.com/voguehaircolourstudio | Make-up AbiLou Beauty, www.abiloubeauty.com | Bridesmaids’ dresses, Whistles | Jewellery and accessories, Oliver Bonas | Suits, Coes, www.coes.co.uk | Additional foliage, Wholesale Florist Direct | www.wholesalefloristdirect.co.uk Stationery design, Anni Taverner, www.instagram.com/anni.taverner | Printing, Suffolk Digital www.suffolkdigital.co.uk | Wedding and engagement rings, Woodbridge Jewellery Workshop, www.woodbridgejewelleryworkshop.co.uk | Toilets, Classical Toilet Hire, www.classicaltoilethire.co.uk | Organist, Peter Bumstead | Sweets, Mablethorpe Rock & Ices | Tables, chairs, fridges, ACE Hire, www.acehire.co.uk | Marquee plants, Dobbies Garden Centre, www.dobbies.com | Church plants, Suffolk Food Hall, www.suffolkfoodhall.co.uk 40

REAL WEDDINGS
B L U E S KY D AY Beth and Jack’s wedding was bathed in glorious spring sunshine Images courtesy of Martin Beard Photography
B
eth and Jack hit it off from the moment they first started chatting. “We met in London, while we were both studying at different universities, and found it really easy to talk to each other. Then it just grew from there,” recalls Beth. Romance blossomed and Jack proposed on a cliff edge overlooking the sea during a trip to Mortehoe in Devon for their five-year anniversary of being together. “It was a surprise engagement, although I had my suspicions when Jack started constantly checking the weather forecast and insisted on dressing smartly when we went for our walk,” laughs Beth. They tied the knot on 15th April this year at the St John Lateran Church followed by a reception at Hengrave Hall, Suffolk. Read on for Beth’s account of their big day… 43
We had a lot of guests and having the church and whole wedding in one place made it much easier for everyone.
Hengrave Hall was the only venue we looked at as we fell in love with it straight away. We wanted to get married in church and the one in the grounds was beautiful.
I loved the lace and beading detail of my Martina Liana (1059) dress. The open back and train were beautiful and it had a subtle touch of sparkle. 44
I wore a fingertip-length, single-layer veil which was perfect as it didn’t detract from the rest of the dress.
REAL WEDDINGS
Jack and the groomsmen wore light brown, slimline suits to stand out from the rest of the guests.
We were lucky with the weather and were able to have our drinks reception outside. We had outdoor games and our ceremony pianist played a variety of songs as background music.
My bridesmaids looked lovely in different style dresses, which they chose themselves as I wanted them to feel comfortable on the day.
Milsoms did the catering and on-the-day coordination as well which made the day even more special. They were always one step ahead of us, making everything run smoothly so we could focus on enjoying the day. The centerpieces were a mix of tall and low-level arrangements, including the same blue and peach flowers used in my bouquet.
We both really enjoyed the few moments we spent together, just the two of us, to take everything in. 45
We wanted to keep the décor minimal as the venue was so beautiful it didn’t really need anything more. The table plan was displayed on a big mirror to complement the style of the venue.
Our cake was so detailed, it had light blue and white tiers to go with our colour scheme, flowers made of icing on the top and bottom layers. and floral stencilling similar to the lace on my dress.

ONLY SKY We spoke to local experts for their take on what’s cool for al fresco weddings this season
L
ove for the great outdoors is blooming. After being shut up indoors during the pandemic there’s growing appreciation of open spaces, fresh air and all that nature has to offer. Demand for chilled al fresco weddings continues to rise and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. Luckily, we’re blessed in East Anglia with everything from beautiful coast and countryside, magical woods, forests and more, so the world’s your oyster. Read on for top tips on how to pull off a dream outdoor wedding in style.
The green canopy
Norfolk’s Wellington Wood is a magical tipi venue with a green, eco-friendly ethos designed to tread lightly on the earth. With 70 acres of private wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, it’s an idyllic setting for couples wanting to celebrate their special day, their way. Owner Vicky Plum says, “Outdoor weddings provide freedom and opportunities to personalise, celebrate, complement and have fun with your wedding in unique, sustainable ways.” Visit www.wellingtonwood.co.uk
VICKY’S TOP TIPS
Images courtesy of www.vickyplum.co.uk
❤ Start with your wedding date and what’s in season – an important consideration for outdoor weddings. Be inspired by the natural backdrop at the time of year and use local produce and seasonal flowers to enhance and complement the setting and your colour palette.
❤ Create imaginative welcome drink stations using wooden ladders, crates and glass dispensers.
❤ Make the most of the space available to set up outdoor seating and lounge areas. Think low seating and pallet tables with a bell tent, stylish cane furniture, rugs and straw-bale sofas.
❤ Add your own special touches with signage, ceremony backdrops, props and milk churns filled with flowers – easy ways to personalise your wedding, especially if they’re portable and can be used for the ceremony and reception.
❤ Have fun with outdoor activities and games. Get creative and make your own or hire vintage garden games for your wedding. Check out Norfolk-based Samphire Vintage Props (www.samphirevintageprops.co.uk)
❤ For al fresco dining, relaxed choices and regional, seasonal produce are ideal, everything from food vans and barbecues to hog roasts and local artisan ice cream.

I do al fresco
WHY CHOOSE AN OUTDOOR WEDDING? Robert says: ❤ There's more space for friends and family to mix and mingle without having to worry about narrowing the guest list down. ❤ Being surrounded by natural scenery gives you a head start on the décor. Choose a location that provides the perfect backdrop to match your wedding theme. ❤ Plenty of natural light throughout the day creates a wealth of photo opportunities. ❤ Great for seasonal weddings, whatever the time of year. Although the warmer months in spring and summer are most popular, that doesn’t mean you should dismiss late autumn or winter. Although you’re gambling with the elements a little more, the earthy autumnal colours are beautiful and winter weddings can be magical too – you may even get a dusting of snow!
Blank canvas
If you’re worried about the British climate putting a dampener on your day, never fear a giant hat tipi is not only great for all weather, but adds an extra special touch to a rustic, boho or festival-style wedding. Amie Price, event manager at Norfolk-based Firefly Tipis (www.firefly-tipis.co.uk) says, “The tipis can be set up anywhere, even in the middle of a field, with services brought in.to cater for all your big-day needs.” With room for 55 loved ones for a sit-down reception, or more standing, extra tipis can be added on if you’re planning on inviting a crowd. The perfect blank canvas, the dining layout and styling is down to you. “Most couples prefer the rustic, relaxed vibe, but any theme can be achieved with a little creative imagination,” adds Amie. You could even sleep out under the stars in a tipi bridal suite, complete with rustic bed and heater to keep you cosy.

With the recent relaxation of restrictions on outdoor weddings at licensed venues, couples now have more choice than ever before. With greater freedom and flexibility, expect to see more al fresco ceremonies and personalised services tailored to couples’ lives and loves this year. Local celebrant Robert Head of Oaktree Ceremonies (www.oaktreeceremonies.co.uk) loves an outdoor wedding. He says, “It’s wonderful for nature-loving couples to be able to hold their wedding celebrations in the great outdoors. Getting married outside is a unique, vibrant experience and a growing trend which we believe will be even more popular in the future.”
OUTDOOR WEDDINGS
Marquee magic
A marquee is a perennial favourite for outdoor weddings offering flexibility and a space to make your own. Here Chris Boardley, events and operations manager for Anglia Coastal Marquees (www.angliacoastalmarquees.co.uk), answers some of your most frequently asked questions. 1. Can a marquee be sited anywhere or does it need a special surface? Marquees can be put up on almost any surface provided the correct fixings can be installed. A flat and level grassed area is ideal, however for concrete, tarmac or any similar hard surface unsuitable for stakes, large concrete weights or special bolts can be used instead to anchor it to the ground. On sloped or very uneven surfaces, the marquee can be put up on a raised level platform. 2. Does it get stuffy in the summer if the weather’s hot or what happens if it’s wet and windy? The marquee should have ample sides which can be opened up to allow a breeze to circulate through (weather dependant of course). If it’s very
windy we’d recommend keeping it closed though. A marquee does offer shade, which is great when it is very hot and sunny. 3. What kind of styling and décor works well to create the wow factor? This depends on your personal taste and wedding theme – especially when it comes to styling the inside. It could be anything from large hanging flower arrangements to brightly coloured Chinese lanterns. Other ways to create wow factor include adding peaks or cones to the roof line of the marquees. 4. Would we need a separate power supply? In most cases, a generator is the best and most reliable power source, certainly for large celebrations. For more intimate affairs it can be possible to get power from a house or outbuilding but this is less reliable. 5. What are the restrictions? Restrictions are few and far between but usually it’s down to the suitability of the site. Size, shape and, or the surface or sometimes the access to the site can dictate what type and, or size of marquee can be provided.
Hannah of exclusive-use wedding venue Hall Farm Cottages in the heart of the Norfolk Broads shares her handy hints for outdoor weddings. ❤ Think about seating and save some of your budget by reusing your ceremony chairs for inside the marquee. This is a great job for some helpful ushers and groomsmen to organise while you’re having your photos taken. ❤ Marquee logistics can involve a little more careful planning than other types of wedding venue. One big consideration is planning the order of setting up and clearing away. The rule-of-thumb here is ‘first in last out’. For example, you can’t take the marquee down before all the furniture has been collected and the furniture can’t be delivered until the marquee is up! Visit www.hallfarm.com/weddings 51

his stunning shoot at Titchwell Manor showcases the on-trend boho-chic theme perfectly. Nestled just a stone’s throw from the North Norfolk coast, the hotel’s light and bright conservatory provided the ideal versatile space for local wedding suppliers to work their magic. Coordinated by the venue’s wedding and sales executive Kirstie Boon, the aim was to keep the palette natural and authentic. She explains, “The popular pampas grass and dried flowers add natural, sandy, white, and cream tones and we introduced sprigs of green foliage to further embrace the organic theme. “Dusky pink is still extremely prominent, so we wanted to marry these trends to create a natural, soft, boho-chic look. We also balanced rose gold metallic elements with soft, pink fabrics to evoke a relaxed, comfortable feel.” Florist Elle Harris adds, “With the main floral focus on the top tables, tying in the rustic stone bottles and matching stems set a good balance and is a great alternative to table centrepieces for couples who prefer a more minimal dressed look.”

There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

DRY WITH SPLIT ENDS Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil (£50), and Christophe Robin Regenerating Shampoo with Prickly Pear Oil (£31), www.christopherobin.co.uk “This regenerating duo, infused with prickly pear oil, smells fantastic. After just one use, the nourishing formulas have transformed my hair, leaving behind a shiny finish with less frizz – hallelujah! The mask worked wonders for me, and I love how you only need to wait five minutes for it to work its magic – I can be very impatient sometimes. All in all, I would highly recommend it!” – Olivia Gibson

FINE HAIR LACKING VOLUME Grow Gorgeous Volume Duo (£27), www.growgorgeous.co.uk “After rinsing the products out, my hair was left intensely soft and smooth, and instantly felt like it had more body, even when soaking wet – the Grow Gorgeous Volume Conditioner is the detangler my dreams are made of! I was careful to take my time blow drying, section by section with a barrel brush and was amazed to see that my lifeless, flat hair looked double the thickness and had a bounce to it. I genuinely cannot wait to continue using.” – Beth Morton 78

DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

EXPERT ADVICE
Q&A Hot tips and make-up advice for summer brides
HERE COME THE GIRLS
Victoria says: When working with a large group, especially for a summer wedding, I find that most people are reluctant to be first in the make-up chair. Personally, I find it better to break the process down. Excluding the bride, I start by doing everyone else’s eye make-up, prepping well with my favourite P.Louise eye base as colours adhere to this really well and stand out beautifully. Once this is done I go back to do the foundation, contour and blusher, finishing with a great setting spray like the one by Urban Decay. If the skin feels hot, I use hyaluronic acid serum to cool it down before applying the base make-up. I like to leave the bride until last so that her make-up is freshest and it allows them time to chill out and reflect before the ceremony. It also helps prevent the nerves from building up too much and the risk of them touching and smudging their make-up. I provide a little touch-up kit including blotting paper in case any shine does break through. Laura Mercier translucent powder is great for this and is my go-to product for a quick freshen-up. Timings are important and I always work mine out to allow plenty of opportunity for the bride to get dressed without feeling stressed, have photos taken and enjoy a glass of fizz before leaving for the ceremony. I have a big bridal party and we all need to have our hair and make-up done on the wedding morning. What’s the usual pecking order, who goes first the bride or the bridesmaids? I’m worried about the timings and getting flustered, especially if it’s a hot day, as we want to avoid the dreaded shine?
GET GLOWING I’m getting married in the summer and have no idea where to start when it comes to my bridal make-up. Can you help? Victoria says: First and foremost, aim to look like a refreshed and beautiful version of you. To achieve this in line with summer 2022 trends I recommend: ❤ Use a long-lasting foundation buffed into the skin for a natural effect. If you have dry skin, a hydrating base is key and for oily complexions, a matte one is best to control shine. ❤ Natural wispy lashes will enhance your eye shape and take your make-up into another realm. I love Sweed Nikki No Lash-Lash or hybrid eyelash extensions. ❤ A groomed brow makes a world of difference. Products such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze styling wax will help them stay put all day and also subtly lift the eye ❤ Flawlessly blended bronzed skin is a summer must-have. Golden peachy hues where the sun naturally hits the face, top of the nose and across the cheeks, will give a youthful healthy glow. I love Chanel Les Beiges Gel Bronzer for foolproof application and sun-kissed skin. Make sure to match the shade to your décolletage for a seamless finish. ❤ Warm earthy shades will complement blue and green eyes, make them glow with a halo metallic mobile lid or keep it classic with a matte eyeshadow and clean black liner for all. ❤ Lip trends remain soft and natural with a liner such as Morphe Sweet Tea along with a pretty pink lipstick to accent like Charlotte Tilbury Dancefloor Princess or MAC Peach Blossom Creamsheen. ❤ Other ways to enhance a lovely summery look could include an eyebrow/ eyelash lift and tint, a face and body tan (I love Amanda Harrington), drinking plenty of water and using a factor 50 sun protection product such as La Roche-Posay Anti Shine gel cream. I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.
READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a
videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

I
BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:
VENUE
CATERING
❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.
❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.
PHOTOGRAPHER
JEWELLERY
❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.
❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.
ALTERNATIONS
CAKE
❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 85

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Local experts on summer weddings
WHAT’S HOT We’re getting married next summer and are excited to get cracking with the wedding planning. What would you suggest to add an extra seasonal touch to our dream day? Tracy says: First and foremost it’s important to choose the right venue to meet your needs. If you’re hoping to spend time outdoors, look for one with beautiful gardens and great indoor spaces too – just in case it rains! It’s often the little things and personal touches that make all the difference and for summer weddings there are many ways to add a seasonal flavour to your celebration. ❤ Outdoor ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular, particularly since Covid. ❤ Celebrate post-vows with refreshing al fresco drinks on the lawn like Pimms or Prosecco rosé. ❤ An ice cream van is a nice touch too – great for fun photos. ❤ Keep your guests entertained with garden games during the drinks reception while you slip away for romantic, just-wed photographs. ❤ Fans are a great addition to the day, either in a basket to grab during the ceremony or as favours at the reception to keep your guests cool.
❤ Sage green is one of this year’s popular shades but for summer weddings you can get away with any bright and beautiful colour. Tracy Cole | Senior events manager | www.hintleshamhall.co.uk 87
BLOOMING LOVELY We’re great cake lovers and want something that looks and tastes delicious for our summer wedding. What would you suggest that’s on trend? Terri says: Small cakes and single tiers are hot for this summer and next. The semi-naked cake remains popular, but increasingly with white chocolate ganache as opposed to the more traditional sugarpaste finish. Painted cakes always make a statement and can reflect a seasonal theme beautifully. We’re also seeing lots of interest in hooped cake stands which are amazing as they allow you to extend the design of the cake creating a stunning showpiece for the big day. Terri Newman | Cake maker | www.erivicacakes.com
This small cake is standing on top of a whole world of different flavoured cookies – 240 to be exact! Great as an alternative to the popular cupcake towers.
Iced with sugarpaste, the flowers on this seasonal stunner have been painted and piped on in royal icing then each one Handmade gumpaste passion flowers with hits of fushia pink add extra wow factor to hand-painted in beautiful summer colours. this headturner.
ORDER OF THE DAY What handy hints can you give us to make sure our summer wedding goes smoothly? Matt says: There’s no better time to hold your wedding than in the summer months. The light’s great for photos, you can provide garden games for your guests and, since the rules were relaxed recently, there’s more freedom to hold your ceremony outdoors too. However, with the unpredictable British weather, you’ll need to be ready to react and adapt to whatever the heavens may throw at you. To help avoid potential glitches, here’s a short checklist: 1.
2.
3. 4.
5.
88
Contingency plans: Check with your chosen venue that there are areas for guests to shelter if it rains or to get out of the sun. If it’s a wet day you’ll also need an alternative indoor space for the photos and somewhere to continue the party. Outdoor shade: If the weather’s fine, a large proportion of your day may be spent outside. Make use of natural shady areas to set up a drinks station or garden games and ask your venue what they can provide in the way of parasols if it’s hot. This is particularly important if you’re having an al fresco ceremony – you don’t want your guests to cook while they wait for your grand entrance! Menu choices: It could be scorching on the day, so consider lighter, seasonal food options for the wedding breakfast. Watch the booze: We all know that alcohol and hot sun don’t mix well. It can be a long day and my advice is to pace yourself. It’s a good idea to have bottles of water available alongside your regular reception drinks too. Think cake: This can be overlooked and on more than one occasion I have had to rescue a cake wilting in the heat. To avoid an Eton Mess on super-hot days, store your cake in a refrigerated or cool
area and only bring it out at the last minute before your guests are called to take their places for the wedding breakfast. 6. Suncream: This one might seem obvious but I learned the hard way after forgetting to pack mine. After a two-hour drinks reception at an exceptionally hot August wedding, I ended up with a face the same colour as my crimson tailcoat! Not a good look. Don’t forget yours and maybe even remind your guests to pack theirs too. Most importanltly, remember, you can’t control the weather and allow it to make or break your day, but you can plan for it and work around it. A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination
A
fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.
TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.
Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
