The Elwes family has been restoring the site for many years to bring the spaces back to life, so I was over the moon when the opportunity to see the property in personUponarose.arrival, the lovely Jana greeted us with a warm welcome, prosecco and some delicious cake before giving us a tour of the property. We viewed all the stunning spaces, including The Manor, Party Yurt and the stunning Dovecot Chapel, which is perfect for wedding ceremonies. Each area is charming with its own character and eye-catching features. The team has added so many thoughtful touches and personal details –it’s clear how much they love the venue.
The property offers three different cottages on a self-catering basis; each one offers something truly unique and special. My partner and I were lucky enough to say in the beautiful Rose Cottage, one of the oldest parts of the site. Sitting in the living room felt like I’d stepped back in time as the space showcased many Tudor features, especially the inglenook fire place that’s perfect for those winter nights. The luxurious bathroom was my favourite part of the cottage; it features a gorgeous freestanding bath and a freefalling shower. The large navy kitchen with an AGA cooker had all the pots, pans and utensils needed to cook a feast. For those who would prefer to enjoy a nice meal out, the venue recommends The Hope & AnchorUpstairsnearby.aretwo cosy bedrooms with plenty of space to relax and get ready. We decided to try out the nook room, which features a large bed that provided the perfect escape from everyday life, thanks to the curtains that created an almost den-like feel. Here we had the perfect night’s rest and woke up feeling refreshed for the day ahead. Honestly, I was out like a light as soon as my head hit that pillow.
Sawcliffe Manor is home to a natural, off-grid spa that provides a private space to relax and pamper yourself for three hours. Its stunning surroundings create the perfect backdrop to disconnect from the world and enjoy quality time with loved ones. The spa takes the team seven hours to prepare, so we felt privileged to be able to try it out. We started with a dip in the wooden hot tub made from spruce and larch wood. No chemicals or electricity are used, so it’s perfect for those with sensitive skin. Our favourite part of the experience was the copper milk bath, which left our skin smooth and hydrated. We soaked in the tub for 30 minutes before rinsing off. Unlike my partner, I was brave enough to face the Swedish ice bucket, which was definitely ice cold! To warm up, I used the freshly picked herbs to create some tea while my feet were soaking in the salt foot bath. We then scrubbed our body with Beldi soap and an exfoliation mitt to remove all our dry skin – I felt a million dollars afterwards. What better way to finish our relaxation session than a good old clay mask?
PURE RELAXATION
We love a good competition and couldn’t wait to participate in an archery session, an activity we had done before and really enjoyed! Our instructor Reg was fantastic. His passion for the sport was evident, and he shared plenty of knowledge with us. After shooting a few arrows in the 17th-century dairy, we got the hang of it and had the best time. After a fun morning session, it was time to explore the nearby nature reserve to try and find the wild Exmoor ponies. The herd of 32 ponies roam free on 400 acres to help keep the grass levels down and support the ecosystem. After a short walk, we turned a corner to find the magnificent creates almost waiting for us. We watched them from afar amongst nature and enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere.

After the perfect night’s rest, what better way to start the day than a full English breakfast? The team at Sawcliffe Manor provided us with a basket full of everything needed to create the perfect meal. We enjoyed fresh orange juice, milk, eggs, locally cured bacon, Lincolnshire sausages, a fresh granary loaf, tasty pastries, cake, honey, homemade jam and granola with different toppings. I usually grab breakfast on the go with how busy everyday life can be, so it was so lovely to take time together to cook a lovely meal.
THE FINAL VERDICT We had such a fantastic stay at Sawcliffe Manor! The team couldn’t have been more welcoming, and it felt like a home away from home. The venue provided the perfect location for us to relax and unwind together in dreamworthy surroundings. We created so many lovely memories, and I can’t wait to go back in the future. The wedding took place on October 2nd 2021, and the couple created a day that perfectly represented them both. Molly says, “We both love autumn and wanted to highlight this in our theme. Originally, our first wedding was supposed to take place in September 2020, which was the venue’s only date available around that time. Our silver lining to the pandemic was getting to move our wedding date to October 2021, so our dream autumnal wedding was more realistic.”
Five years later, Oli knew it was the perfect moment to pop the question during a three-week holiday. Molly says, “We were on a small island called Bohol, and Oli had planned for us to watch the Sea of Clouds at sunrise. We trekked up the biggest hill and watched the sunrise as the clouds below us wisped by – it was gorgeous.” She continues, “I thought Oli was grabbing breakfast snacks from his bag, only to find him with a ring asking me to marry him – it was a complete surprise!”
Here Molly shares details about their special day…
Molly grew up spending most of her childhood at Calke Abbey having picnics, walking her dogs, spending summer evenings with friends and dates with Oli. The couple was so excited to find out the estate had a wedding venue and booked a viewing at The Riding School. They fell in love with the blank canvas space, which allowed the pair to make the venue even more personal while matching their colour scheme. The Ivy House Weddings team were so welcoming and accommodating compared to other venues the lovebirds viewed. The couple hired in a wedding stylist, Sass Weddings, to help create a warm and cosy feel to the large reception room. To match the autumnal colour scheme, deep reds and rustic orange tones were used. There was foliage around the venue and warm lighting to mimic candles as no open flames were allowed in the Grade II listed building.
Molly and Oli first met on Tinder back in 2015. After messaging back and forth, Oli planned dinner at his and the pair cooked a delicious meal together. “We ate food, listened to our favourite music, played a game and chatted until the sun came up – we couldn’t believe how quickly time flew by”, says Molly. She was attracted to Oli’s smile and personality, which was so kind and thoughtful. Molly adds, “From the word go, we were on the same wavelength. We had such different lives but so much to talk about; our stomachs hurt from laughing –thankfully not from the dinner!”

To make the wedding breakfast seem like a big family meal, the pair used four rows of banquet tables leading off of the top table. That way, everyone could see and talk to each other. The Black Peppermint Food Company, which works alongside Ivy House Weddings, created banquet-style sharing platters to encourage people to mingle and it worked!Duetothe table layout and sharing platters, the pair opted for simple centrepieces with natural linen table runners and small vases full of fresh and dried flowers. For table names, each table had a number presented in a frame with pressed flowers. The Fabric Theatre provided lighting to the venue with warm festoon lighting and lanterns all over the dancefloor. The bride wanted an oversized bouquet and foliage flower crown to represent her love of florals. She says, “We wanted to be surrounded by blooms! For the venue, I’d been inspired by greenery draped over bare brick walls and felt this would be perfect for the property. Our florist and Ivy House Weddings exceeded our expectations by covering one section of our wall, draping the balcony and the windows in a fountain of fresh foliage – we were left speechless!”
The pair wanted to give their guests something they would enjoy for favours and gave loved ones tiny bottles filled with different tipples. Each one had a tag attached saying, ‘We’ve tied the knot, so take the shot.’
The pair also hired a vintage-style photo booth for the evening, utilising The Riding School’s bare brick walls as their backdrop.
Molly’s mum is currently training to become a vicar, so they had the privilege of her reading out the wedding vows. Molly comments, “It was so lovely having her be the one to marry us, and it’s something I know we’ll always treasure.”
Based in the bride’s hometown, Cakes by Mad Cake Maker created a three-tiered naked-style cake for the pair decorated in foliage and fresh berries. The lovebirds picked carrot cake with orange buttercream and raspberry Bakewell cake with vanilla frosting for theOliflavours.hadalways wanted to drive him and Molly away in a classic car rather than being chauffeured. By postponing the wedding by 13 months due to Covid, the pair had a little more time to save and bought a Yellow MG Midget. Molly comments, “This was one of our wildest decisions, which we’re so glad we made! It was lovely having a 20-minute drive to our reception, just the two of us.”
On the day, Molly woke up with so much excitement and joy – it was such a happy morning. She says, “I was excited to see Oli standing at the bottom of the aisle, and for the day’s celebrations to commence. I momentarily felt a little sick to my stomach with nerves when it was time to leave for the church, but that quickly disappeared once we were arrived.” She continues, “I wish I could walk down the aisle again! I specifically remember my dad having to slow me down, I always joked with Oli that he’d see me sprinting down the aisle and it almost came true.”
A lovely moment was when Giz, one of the groomsmen, did a truly exquisite reading of The Owl and the Pussy-Cat. After studying 22
To keep guests entertained, the couple had a fantastic band called The Distance at their reception. The band played a relaxed acoustic set during the drinks reception, which was beautiful – they even played one of the couple’s favourite songs at Oli’s request. The bride says, “They went above and beyond to contribute to our unforgettable day. In the evening, they turned up the volume and got everyone on the dancefloor with some classic songs.”
Oli woke up feeling a little nervous but excited; he constantly had butterflies in his stomach. He comments, “I wished Molly was there in the morning to help calm my nerves, but they quickly left once I started getting ready.” He continues, “Luckily for me, Molly arrived over half an hour late for the ceremony and all the nerves left my body by that time.”

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding the one, the bride found the perfect dress at Alice Rose Bridal called Sofia by Ellis Bridal. She accessorised her look with a diamond necklace gifted by her mum and a gorgeous pair of shoes from Charlotte Mills. Molly says, “I didn’t see myself in a full-length mirror until arriving at our reception – I felt so beautiful.” Oli, his groomsmen, the bride’s two brothers and their dads wore three-piece heritage blue tweed suits with Liberty Print floral ties that matched the peachy colours in the bouquets perfectly. Oli chose a bow tie to stood out from the others. The bridesmaids wore floor-length multiway dresses. Molly didn’t want them to look identical, so the dresses were all styled differently while ensuring everyone felt comfortable and gorgeous.
HONEYMOON After the perfect wedding, the couple went to Thailand for three weeks after planning their perfect trip together. Molly says, “We spent time dotting around Thailand, enjoying the gorgeous beaches, exploring Bangkok and Chiang Mai, heading inland to a national park for a deep jungle/forests experience and spending a day at an elephant sanctuary. We had the best time and didn’t want to come home.” She continues, “The food was the highlight of our trip, everything was just so delicious and I don’t think we ever ate an average meal there.”

Ivy house Weddings were an absolute dream for the couple. Molly says, “I can’t say how incredible and supportive they had been in the lead-up to our wedding and on the day itself. Without them, I don’t know how our day would have been as perfect as it was. The venue exceeded all our expectations; everything was amazing.”
Harriet and Darren didn’t let Covid-19 ruin their special day

During a trip to Majorca, the lovebirds went for a walk after a lovely meal together. Harriet recalls, “We were just chatting and looking out at the bay when Darren pretended to roll his ankle but actually got down on one knee to pop the question!” She adds, “We got someone passing by to take a photo before heading up to our room where Darren had organised for champagne.”

Harriet and Darren first met at university during freshers week on the dancefloor, and bumped into each other again a few weeks later in the laundry room. After chatting back and forth, the pair went on their first date and became official a month later – the rest is history!

We had a three-tiered fruit cake with white and purple icing, diamanté trims and two hearts on top. Our pavilion was decorated beautifully by Cover in Style. We had two large floral arrangements and lanterns with pillar candles inside We gave guests hand sanitisers and shots of various flavoured liqueurs for favours. I had purple flowers in my bouquet while the bridesmaids had white and green florals. The flowergirls had a mixture of purple and white posy of sweet peas. We had visited Ye Olde Bell Hotel in Retford before for meals and special occasions. The venue’s manager was so fantastic; we just knew we’d have a great wedding day there. As we had a small wedding with only a few guests, everyone sat around one tableunder the pavilion. We had glass cylinders with floating candles and vases withfoliage and white flowers in for the centrepiece.
I wore a satin Sincerity dress with a diamanté and pearl belt. It originally wasn’t the gown I had in mind, but I loved the simplicity of the dress once I tried it on – plus it had pockets! Darren wore a tail suit and pinstripe trousers with an ivory waistcoat, pocketsquare and buttonhole.
We had white pom poms on shepherds hooks, ivory chair covers with purple andlace sashes and a floral archway to decorate the ceremony space.
For our wedding breakfast we had a melon dish for starters with champagne sorbet and tarragon syrup, chicken parmigiana with potatoes and seasonal vegetables for mains and a mixed berry pavlova for dessert.
Zoom was the perfect app for ensuring all our guests could witness our entire wedding, especially Darren’s mum who felt she was still a big part of our day.

Katherine and Ben’s adventure first started at work. Ben came to the rescue with a Krispy Kreme doughnut after Katherine forgot her lunch one day, and the pair really hit it off. They went for a drink after work one evening and didn’t stop laughing or talking for hours until the bar staff had to kick them out – the rest is history!Benpopped the question at a local park, which held a lot of meaning to Katherine. She says, “I always pointed out a specific place where I used to have picnics with my late grandma under a tree and all the fond memories I had growing up.” She adds, “One rainy and cold morning, we went for a soggy walk and basically had the park to ourselves. We reached my favourite spot and I was just watching the rain on the lake not really paying much attention to Ben. I turned around to find him on one knee – it was the best surprise!”
We knew Stubton Hall was the venue for us the moment we drove up its fabulous driveway and fell in love with the spaces. There’s something about the hall, which is so romantic and elegant.
The amazing styling by Fran at Modern Heritage Design really finished off our desired look. She instantly knew what I was looking for after our first conversation and helped plan my dream Pinterest wedding!
The autumnalwarm colour scheme continued onto our cake, which started off with a neutral colour fading into a slight orange shade to match the trees outside.
Our gorgeous love heart wedding favours doubled up as place names, which I thought was a practical and lovely touch. Autumn is my favourite time of the year and we wanted to reflect this throughout our wedding. Our flowers matched the theme with plenty of champagne roses against autumnal foliage.

Ben wore a classic three-piece tail suit, which was one thing he really wanted for the day and knew it would complement all the groomsmen. He wore a cravat to separate himself from the others who wore ties.

It was overwhelming seeing every aspect come together on the day – I was smiling from ear to ear.
I wore a Pronovias dress with intricate lace. I couldn’t get the smile off my face once I tired it on and my mum started crying. I kept the accessories quite simple and just had a veil lined with the same lace pattern as my dress.
The bridesmaids’ dresses matched the venue and theme perfectly – they all looked stunning on the day!
Once the wedding breakfast was finished, people had time to freshen up before we had a disco. Everyone was able to dance away any nerves or stress from earlier in the day.

When the ceremony was completed, the reality really sank in and all I could think was, ‘I’m a married woman now.’ Ben’s mum had tested positive for Covid-19 on the wedding day, which was a massive speed bump. Katie and Dom first met at secondary school and became friends for many years. Once the pair left school, their friendship grew and slowly blossomed into a relationship.

The couple was away in Turkey when Dom proposed. Katie comments, “He popped the question on a water jetty, which went out into the sea – it was a complete surprise!”

Our three-tiered cake had lemon and chocolate flavours and was decorated with flowers from our florist. The food was genuinely delicious; everyone commented on how good it was. The bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses with lace backs.
We were looking at Cripps & Co properties when the team mentioned their new venue being developed called Grangefields. It was an old barn that hadn’t been finished yet, but we knew it was our style even from the renders –it turned out better than we imagined! We had a mixture of flower arrangements for centrepieces. We picked lots of foliage and white blooms for our flowers, including roses and orchids in the bridal bouquet. We wanted to make a difference to a charity close to our hearts, and decided to donate to Macmillan Cancer Support. We provided some lovely bee and kingfisher pins as favours.
An illusionist performed to keep guests entertained during the drinks reception and in the evening. We also had a band who were incredible – everyone loved having a boogie on the dancefloor.

I got no sleep the night before the wedding, so I was grateful that my make-up artist made me feel so fabulous. Dom wore a Charles Tyrwhitt suit and looked gorgeous! The groomsmen all wore the same but without the waistcoat and black buttons.
Every single guest that turned up made our day extra special. The wedding took place as we were coming out of the pandemic, so it felt like a real celebration that we could all be together again.

The venue was designed by Robert Adam, who became one of the country’s most successful, fashionable and inspirational architects. The beauty and charm of this quintessentially Georgian manor house oozes from every nook and cranny. The building is full of historic features lifted from the pages of a Jane Austen novel – it’s the perfect venue with plenty of photographic opportunities.

THE MANE EVENT I’ve seen some gorgeous pictures of messy buns and textured up dos, but my hair is so thin and straight. Can I still achieve this look? The short answer is absolutely! This sort of style is actually perfect for people with fine and straight hair, as it gives the illusion of having thicker locks. Any texture or curls are held in place by the up do, so you wont have any fears of the curls dropping or going fuzzy. Padding can be used to make the bun more pronounced and create an illusion of more hair. If you still need a little extra helping hand, a couple of rows of extensions can be added to the nape of the neck to provide more hair to wrap around the bun. Ensure you bring along plenty of pictures to your hair trial to show your stylist how textured or messy you would like your hair.
Veils are a stunning bridal accessory that can bring the whole look together. A long and sheer Italian tulle veil with pearls scattered throughout is gorgeous and very on-trend. Or you can choose an elaborate veil with lace edging down to the bottom of the dress, which is perfect if you have no details on your train.

We’re having a country garden wedding next summer, and I’d love to have fresh-faced and dewy skin. How do I achieve this? A great base will achieve the ‘your-skin-but-better’ dewy look. In the lead up to your wedding, be on top of your moisturising game. Make sure to drink lots of water and wear a daily SPF. Without getting too techy, upgrade to a BHA ( beta hydroxy acid) exfoliant. Don’t let the name acid scare you, as this is much gentler then other products and helps to reduce redness over the traditional face scrub, while still removing dead skin cells. When you get to the big day, start with a hydrating primer – my holy grail is the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base. Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!
As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.
From Miss to Mrs
As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.
GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES
The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!
While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.
If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.
The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?
You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!
If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible.
