Summer loving

ello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding. It’s finally summer, my favourite time of year, and I’m really enjoying the warmer temperatures and sunny skies. There’s something so refreshing about the time of year, I have so much more energy and there’s even more to do. I personally love the brighter evenings and venturing outdoors more in the garden and enjoying family barbecues, beach days and picnics. This summer will be one of the best seasons we’ve had in a long while with weddings back in full swing. Plus, my best friend and colleague Melissa will be exchanging vows in July to the lovely Dave – I’m super excited! As a bridesmaid, there hasn’t been anything better than helping someone your care about plan such an important event. I’m so proud of what they have both achieved, and I know their day will be wonderful. As we reach the busy wedding season, it’s great to see so many talented suppliers working hard to create dream events. This time of year is perfect for weddings, especially al fresco events, and the longer daylight means there’s no rush for taking memorable images – plus, I love a good golden-hour shot! In this issue, we’ve focused on venue styling inspiration to help you transform any venue to match your chosen theme and colour scheme. It’s surprising how the smallest details can make such a difference! Our fashion and beauty features showcase advice from top suppliers to help you look your big-day best. We’ve got you covered from hair tips and make-up inspiration to top fashion advice. As we reach our 50th issue, I’ve taken the time to flick through some of our most memorable issues – I’m so proud of what we have all achieved over the years! This region has so much to offer from talented suppliers, showstopping venues and inspirational couples. Here’s to the following 50 issues! That’s all from me; now sit back, relax and celebrate anything and everything wedding.

GRANGEFIELDS 01332 943 644 | www.crippsandco.com/grangefields Set in the sublime Derbyshire countryside down a long quiet lane sits Grangefields, where guests can leave the world behind to enjoy the private and secluded site. The family-run company, Cripps & Co, has more than 20 years’ experience when it comes to restoring neglected buildings, and the team has worked hard to bring this wedding space back to life. After hosting the first wedding last year, the venue has become a popular location to tie the knot with The Oak Room hosting 160 people and The Courtyards accommodating 175. Lovebirds can continue the celebrations in The Dutch Barn with 175 nearest and dearest. 22

The hard-working team has considered ever aspect to provide top service, including colour changing lights on the dancefloor and a state-of-the-art Funktion-One sound system. A popular feature is the seven-meter-long oak barn with chrome lighting, plenty of hanging greenery and glass walls that provide picture-perfect views. With the British weather being so unpredictable, this venue has been designed with a raised veranda in the Dutch Barn, which allows 150 loved ones to enjoy drink receptions even on those rainy days.

We love...

Couples are invited to come with their families to taste some of the most popular dishes accompanied by a selection of wine for £65 to help them make the perfect choice for their wedding day.

THE DREAM

Crockwell Farm was the perfect setting for Tom and Meg’s wedding Images courtesy of Ellie Mac Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

T

om and Meg first met through mutual friends and kept bumping into each other – it really was fate. After talking more often, the pair discovered a spark and from there, slowly fell in love. Originally, Tom planned to propose on holiday in Madeira. However, the flight was cancelled last minute due to bad weather and the lovebirds ending up booking Center Parcs last minute. Here Tom plucked up the courage and popped the question in their cabin.

SETTING THE SCENE The date was set for December 4th 2021, and the lovebirds wanted to create a memorable day for their loved ones to enjoy. Meg says, “We wanted everyone to have a great time, especially after being in and out of lockdown for the previous 18 months due to Covid-19. We also wanted to ensure that our guests felt safe and made some amendments to our day to ensure even people who were classed as vulnerable could attend.” When it came to finding the perfect backdrop to their day, the couple fell in love with the spaces at Crockwell Farm. The property fitted into their vision and the scenery was a big selling point. The bride stayed onsite the night before the wedding with her mum and maid-of-honour. Fuschia Pinks create stunning arrangements for the day, the company did an amazing job and turned the couple’s vision into a reality. The bride says, “Jo pretty much had free rein of our venue with just our navy and blush colour theme in mind and made the spaces even more beautiful.” Each setting had place names designed with blue flowers to help guests find their seats. Waiting for each person was a blue bag filled with different assorted chocolates. For that extra personal touch, the couple added clay love hearts engraved with T & M. As the venue was already stunning and full of character, the couple only needed to add a few personal touches. They had a red post box for cards and a MR and MRS light up sign that was placed on the edge of the dancefloor. Homemade by Victoria created a beautiful three-tiered cake for the couple with vanilla, caramel and lemon curd flavours – it was a big hit with guests. Meg comments, “Victoria used plain white icing and our florist decorated the bake with fresh flowers that matched the rest of the venue styling – the cake really was delicious!”

LOOKING THE PART When it came to creating her dream look, the bride-to-me visited Gabriella Bridal. Meg says, “The team ensured that I got the dress of my dreams; although there were some tears and a little stress before our big day, I could not have asked for a more beautiful dress.” She continues, “I completely fell in love with my final look – it was the prettiest I’d ever felt. Tom and his groomsmen all wore three-piece suits from Warwicks, and they all wore blush ties and pocket squares. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in navy dresses and personalised blush shawls gifted by the bride.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Live music after the ceremony was provided by Joe Church, and he completed a 90-minute set after the ceremony straight through to the wedding breakfast. Guests loved the acoustic set, and the pair got so many compliments about the performer – the children loved him too. In the evening, Joe performed in a band called WHITEROOM and they played two sets. Meg says, “We’d highly recommend the company; 25

they really got the evening reception started. Joe was very helpful and moved our booking due to delays caused by Covid-19.” Between sets, the couple had a DJ perform to keep the party going.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Meg’s brother gave a surprise speech, which was a lovely moment that meant a lot to the couple. All the speeches were great and full of love. Many suppliers worked hard to ensure the couple had the best possible day. The bride says, “Our photographer Ellie went above and beyond throughout the whole experience. She always kept the communication open throughout the lockdowns, which automatically made us feel at ease – nothing was too much trouble for her. The photos we got were beyond perfect, and we could not ask for anything better. We’ve since organised a family shoot with Ellie later in the year with some new additions to the family.” She continues, “The staff at Crockwell Farm were also amazing, and I can’t thank them enough! The whole day ran perfectly thanks to the owner, the wedding planner and the bar staff who were so friendly and kind.” Throughout the planning experience, the bride’s mum, auntie and cousin really helped the pair. The bride says, “They helped me with a lot of the finer details and without them, many things wouldn’t have been the same.”

HONEYMOON After the perfect day, the couple travelled to Lanzarote for a week with their three-year-old daughter and had a fantastic time. Meg says, “It was a wedding gift from Tom’s auntie, and we couldn’t have felt more grateful after a very stressful run-up to the wedding. We enjoyed the all-inclusive food, pools and mini discos!”

Always and forever REAL WEDDINGS

Check out Simon and Sam’s stunning wedding, which featured a lavender and white colour scheme Images courtesy of The Jasmine Cottage Studio

S

imon and Sam first met at work and gradually became part of the same friendship group. After spending more time together, the pair started to fall in love and became a couple. On the pair’s 10th anniversary, Simon proposed by a river in York. He says, “It was a slight surprise for Sam because we’d already been together so long – she was wondering if I was ever going to pop the question!” The pair set the day for August 26th 2021, and created a memorable wedding to celebrate their love. Here Simon shares details about their special day... 31

The rolling hills of the Amber Valley created the perfect backdrop to our wedding at Shottle Hall. The venue had a selection of wedding spaces to pick from and on-site accommodation.

The bridal bouquet featured white and laven

der roses as well as various flowers.

Our coordinator, Kirsty, was amazing at ensuring our day ran smoothly after the bouquet incident. 32

We originally hadn’t planned

to get mar ried outside until the last minute, the scenery behind us as we exch anged vows was amazing.

Sam says, “I was slightly nervous in the morning, but more excited once we were all ready to go. The morning started a bit stressful trying to get everyone ready and as a result, I forgot the bridesmaids’ bouquets!

We decided against a head table as we didn’t want to feel separate from everybody else. We kept our centrepieces minimal with candles and wreaths made by Greenfingers Florists.

REAL WEDDINGS

We had Macmillan Cancer Support badges for our favours. Giving back to a vital charity meant a lot to us as Sam’s mum passed away two months before the wedding from cancer.

Sam says, “I picked a beautiful dress with my mum; I was glad she at least got to see the gown on me.”

To make the bridesmaids feel comfortable, we

allowed them to pick their own dress.

Shottle Hall’s menu was excellent! We settled on one meat and one vegetarian option – both were equally as appetising.

Me and the groomsmen all wore grey suits with lavender ties, but I wore a larger buttonhole to differentiate myse lf.

Sam’s grandad did a wonderful speech that had everyone in tears.

33

It was just amazing to be surrounded by all

our friends and family.

We had vanilla and chocolate flavours for our ombré cake, which had purple and white icing.

A live band played two sets during our day,

and we had a large gathering on the dancefloor.

OUT OF

Martin and Christine’s wedding was a winter wonderland dream

Images courtesy of Pink Photographics

M

artin and Christine met in their local Co-op, which was a surprise for them both. “It just goes to show that these things can happen when you least expect them!” shares Martin. He adds, “There was an immediate mutual connection between us both. After chatting, I remember walking back to my car and thinking ‘wow, now that was a thunderbolt’.” Christine comments, “Straight away I loved Martin’s smile and his friendly sense of humour – I just knew that I wanted to be with him.” The proposal for Martin didn’t quite go as expected. He explains, “I managed the impossible in getting the proposal completely right and completely wrong at the same time by not sticking to my original plan! With Covid-19 still around, I was at home with Christine while she was on a video call with her work friends. Although I’d anticipated proposing over dinner in the time honoured manner, but in a moment of mischief I thought it would be a great time to do the deed. The moment was priceless and fortunately for me, she said yes!” Christine adds, “The timing was a surprise and it was a lovely fun moment – it was always going to be a ‘yes’. The big date was set, 4th December 2021, with The Petwood Hotel setting the scene. Here, we find out more about their wedding day... 37

SETTING THE SCENE Wanting to create the ultimate winter wedding, the Petwood Hotel was always the first choice for the couple. “Although we did look at other venues, they weren’t ultimately able to offer what we wanted,” shares Christine. “We wanted a property with character that would enable us to have our whole day there and accommodate our guests overnight. The Petwood Hotel is a lovely old building that works well at Christmas due to its wood panelling, Christmas trees in the entrances and its open fires.” The hotel’s lovely gardens set the scene nicely as guests arrived, and The Woodland Suite allowed Martin and Christine to contain their celebrations within their own wing with a private entrance, function rooms and a private bar. All the wider facilities of the hotel were also available and the well-appointed rooms allowed the bride to stay over the night prior, to both ease preparations on the morning of the wedding and to accommodate the guests that had travelled to share their special day. For the finer details on the day, everything matched the couple’s modern winter theme – there was no red, gold or poinsettia in sight! The florist used a pastel colour palette with soft pink, ivory and purple flowers accented by eucalyptus to give a winter-frosted appearance to the bouquets and table centrepieces. This colourway also matched the decoration on the wedding cake, invitations and also the attire worn by the groom, best man and the three ushers – Christine’s three sons, William, Matthew and David. The three-tier wedding cake, from Rosie’s Cakes and Bakes, was a light sponge with buttercream. Salted caramel was used for the top tier, with the lower two tiers being both Victoria sponge. The bake was decorated with fresh flowers on the day. The Petwood Hotel gave the couple a few different choices when it came to styling the function rooms. They picked the option of softly backlit sheer curtains and large, winter-themed candle lanterns to complement the swags and bows in the ceremony area.

LOOKING THE PART The bride wanted something elegant and picked Poppy by Phase Eight, which had lace detailing on the back and a small train. She says, “I really couldn’t have been happier with the dress and I’ve had lovely compliments about it! I wore silver sandals from Cherries of Boston to pair with my dress – they really were so comfortable all day.” Martin decided on a three-piece blue/grey suit from Coneys of Boston, which differed from the best men as the groom wanted to standout. They all wore ties in pale colours that coordinated with the flowers and theme. The groom says, “Christine’s three sons all bought their suits and shoes from Cavani at Coneys in Lincoln and I have to say, the team was brilliant with them. The staff was absolutely spot on with the recommendations, had good humour and knew just how to make sure that all three of them were happy with their look.” The three bridesmaids Stacey, Ellie and Angie all wore pale salmon-pink dresses by Coast, which matched the lace details on the bride’s dress. 38

REAL WEDDINGS

MEMORABLE MOMENTS With so many standout moments from the big day, the happy couple found it hard to narrow down but Martin shares: “Christine’s very organised and with her staying over at the Petwood Hotel with bridesmaid Stacey on the night prior to the wedding, I remained at home having been entrusted with the heavy responsibility of making sure that her three sons were suited and booted on time. Best man Steve lives just around the corner, and he walked round to offer moral support. Being a talented guitarist, he kept up morale by strolling around the house playing my guitar while the finishing touches and final tie straightening was attended to. Having been friends for years and having learned to fly gliders together, he very kindly gave me a pair of glider cufflinks in an engraved case!” Christine’s memorable moment occurred while her dad was giving her away, “He was asked ‘who gives Christine away today?’ and was quietly prompted by the registrar to say “I do”. Dad hesitated a bit not wanting to make an error, thinking that he might be inadvertently getting the groom’s lines by mistake! “Martin’s father, aged 89, has had health issues and Christine’s father had just had a quadruple heart bypass and contracted Covid while in hospital recovering – he was very unwell for a time. Fortunately, he then recovered and was given a round of applause by the staff when he was discharged. It was important to us both to have our parents at our wedding and for my father to give me away. This was a precious moment captured well on our photographer’s wonderful pictures.” 39

“An unforeseen bonus of having an early December wedding is that everywhere is decorated. What a lovely time of year to have a subsequent wedding anniversary too, perhaps to go away for a few nights together somewhere nice to do the Christmas shopping?” – Martin and Christine

lorist Rebecca Ashton at Ashton Flowers organised this local shoot, which was full of quirky and funky touches. “The inspiration behind the day was to have a very relaxed outdoor style,” shares Rebecca. “The amazing tipi and handcrafted one-off pieces really honed in on the festival vibe we were trying to achieve. So many great suppliers contributed to this shoot and made it all come together perfectly. I’ve always wanted to do a really vibrant wedding using my flowers, and this gave me a great opportunity to do so. The florals really stood out against the beautiful props and woodlands surrounding the tipi.” 43

BEAUTY NEWS

FULL BLAST

There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. What’s more, fine hair in particular comes with its own challenges as it can’t hang on to the added body boost. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

HERE COMES THE SUN

We all know that too much sun is damaging to the skin, so to ensure yours is on point for W-day it’s important to protect it. Dr. Hauschka’s new Tinted Face Sun Cream SPF 30 gives the face a radiantly fresh, sun-kissed glow and supports the skin’s natural defences. Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Furla continues its fragrance journey with Autentica Eau De Parfum, a beautifully romantic scent. The vibrancy of Italian mandarin together with raspberry and pear create an irresistible opening, while the softness of cherry blossom mingles with the slight spiciness of peony and freshness of lily of the valley. Then comes the secret of Autentica’s character in its base notes of patchouli, musk and cashmere wood creating a comforting sensation. £35 for 30ml, £49 for 50ml, £72 for 100ml, available at www.fenwick.co.uk

Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. The best news is you’ll never find microbeads, nonoparticles, parabens or phthalates in goodhabit’s formulas or any harmful ingredients at all for that matter. I love Clean Scene Micellar Gel. A rinse-free gel it whisks away both waterproof and long-wearing formulas as well as dirt, excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin of essential moisture. DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

A PASSION FOR FASHION I have a pear-shaped figure. What style of dress do you recommend to show my shape off? We find that every bride looks different in each dress and wants to feel special. Some people like to embrace their shape and curves, while others want to disguise them. For us, it’s essential to help our bride find whatever shape makes her feel undoubtedly an elevated version of

herself. For those wanting to show off their incredible shape, we would suggest a fit and flare gown with a Bardot line or some detail up top to balance the whole look. Then for the bride wanting to disguise her curves, opt for an A-line or fuller gown that cinches in at the waist for an hourglass silhouette. CAPTURING MEMORIES What are the benefits of hiring a videographer for our wedding day?

photos and videos. Re-live your day and see everyone’s expressions and hear their laughter – this is everything your videographer should offer.

Your special day is a sacred event, and a wedding film is a perfect way to document the day to look back on in years to come. Videography captures audible moments and timeless memories, such as your mum’s tearful words of wisdom before the ceremony or your father’s reaction to seeing you all dolled up. These are the memories you’ll cherish long after your wedding day, and a video will preserve them forever. If you ask almost any couple what they remember about their special day, they’ll most likely say it all went by so fast that most of it was just one big blur. You’ll both be preoccupied, so will inevitably miss out on some moments. By rewatching your wedding videos, you’ll be able to see all these special memories and won’t miss a thing. At the end of the day, when the cake is gone, the champagne bottles are empty, and the DJ/ band has gone home, all you’re left with are

BIG-DAY BAKES

THE SWEET STUFF

We’re having a rustic-style wedding and we would love to incorporate our theme into our cake. How can we achieve this?

We’ve started to plan our wedding favours; what advice can you share with us?

I absolutely love rustic weddings and creating cakes to match this theme! For me, this style is all about texture. I always recommend buttercream icing when creating this kind of look, as there are so many ways to create that perfectly imperfect look. You can ask your baker about different textures they can create; I love using stencils, rough top edges and subtle colours. My other go to for rustic-themed cakes is using dried flowers. They’re so popular and add something super special to cakes. You can use the blooms in a huge variety of colours to match any colour scheme. Your supplier should be able to source these for you, or you can provide some of your own. Of course you can also choose fresh or artificial florals or have none at all.

Favours are a nice little touch on your wedding day and are a great way to thank your guests for their attendance. Weddings are expensive in general; so it’s important to make sure you find favours that your guests will love and want to take home. When you don’t think things like this through, you risk people leaving them behind, which can often feel like a waste of money. Our advice is to keep things pretty simple and go with your guests’ general preferences while keeping your budget in mind. Wedding favours can be whatever you want them to be, such as something that goes with the food being served or they could be something tangible that your guests can take away. If your wedding is on the more traditional side, perhaps you want to have traditional favours like sugared almonds. If your day is more modern, go for some tasty sweets or mini cakes.

HEADS UP

What advice can you share with me when it comes to finding the perfect headpiece for my wedding day? Choosing the right headpiece to complement a wedding gown can be daunting; you’ll want to stand out while finding a piece that reflects your personality, matches your dress and fits in with your wedding theme – there’s a lot to think about. My advice is to stop overthinking and trust the experts. Couture milliners like myself have years of experience, and we can guide you through the multiple options available while suggesting the suitable shapes and sizes to frame your head perfectly. We can also help you find the correct shades to complement your dress, hair colour, eye colour, and skin tone. There will always be the perfect headpiece for you; just remember to ask the right person to make it for you. Giulia Mio | Giulia Mio Millinery | www.giuliamiomillinery.com

SUPPORT ACT

I have a very full bust. What styles will suit me and how can I get the right support? For brides with a fuller bust, I recommend an A-line gown with a well constructed bodice and a fastening at the middle point of your back rather than a low open back design – such as the gown seen here (image 1 and 2). The gown has an incredible bodice that gives full support, with boning and a higher cup shape compared to most other gowns. As most brides express, they don’t want the over spill. This dress has a little deep plunge to keep on trend, but it’s well supported with the zip fastening at the back. Gowns with low open backs will provide no support for the front, so it’s key to aviod these styles if you have a fuller bust. If you do want the open back however, pick a gown with thick supportive straps such as our Allure Bridals gown (image 3), which has a beautiful bow detail at the back. The thick Mikado satin straps provide the support, allowing you to feel comfortable. Charlotte Burton | Charlotte Elizabeth Bridal www.charlotteelizabethbridal.com

BEST FOOT FORWARD

What advice can you share with me when it comes to finding the perfect wedding shoes? There are a few important things that can be considered before buying the perfect wedding shoes. The first is budget, wedding shoes can be anything from £50 to thousands of pounds, and the second is your wedding theme and how your shoes will complement it. Once you have figured these out, you can move on to the exciting stuff. The internet is a good place to start researching what style and design you like. Don’t be afraid to stray from the usual white satin style and dare to be different if the mood takes you! Next think about comfort, a wedding day can be a lot of walking, standing and dancing over a long period of time. Brides rarely get to sit down on the day, so consider heel height. Maybe opt for a block heel if you’re not used to heels or even a cushioned sole. The shoes should ideally be tried on with the dress well before the big day to check the heel height is ok with the hemline of the dress. Your dressmaker will be able to help you with this if you take them along to a dress fitting. Also try to wear them around the house – there’s nothing worse than blisters to ruin a first dance! Lastly consider buying two pairs so you can change later on to give your feet a break. Lots of brides buy heels with a matching pair of flat shoes for dancing in the evening. THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT

I want to do something creative with my long, straight hair, but I’m not sure what style to go for. Do you have any suggestions? There are plenty of ways you can get creative and it all depends on what kind of vibe you’re going for on your big day. Are you going for a big statement hair, lots of detail or going to make a statement with your accessories? It’s best to chat through your ideas with your hairstylist and they might think of things you hadn’t considered and will be able to tell you what would be possible with your hair type. If your hair is very straight and doesn’t hold a curl well, the safe option is to go for an up do so you don’t have to worry about it lasting all day. If you want to keep the look classic, go for an up do with a detailed crown, or a layering of different braid types is simple but creative. Ponytails are also very in at the moment and a super sleek low pony with a statement accessory such as stick-on pearls or a big bold headband would always be a head-turner. BIG-DAY BEST

AU NATURAL

I don’t wear a lot of make-up normally. How do I create a perfect big-day look while still feeling like me? Focus on the parts of your face that you love and add products to enhance your features, not mask them. Think about how you’d like to look on the big day and a have a trial run to make sure you’re comfortable in the make-up. If not, tweak the bits that don’t feel like you. My top make-up tip would be to keep the skin fresh and healthy looking, with lots of hydration and primers to add that natural glow, then just use some concealer to add coverage where needed. FINDING THE ONE

When should I start looking for a wedding dress and do you have any advice on how to go about my search? Starting your dress search 12 to 15 months before your day is a fantastic time to book those all important, very exciting appointments. Really do your research, it will help you on your journey, this is where the fun starts. Have a look at the boutiques that really speak your language. Look at the designers they stock and the types of dresses they have available to try on. Do they fit your vision of how you want to look on your wedding day? There are no rules as to how many places to visit, some brides focus on one boutique and if they find their dress, their search is complete and the celebrations can begin. If more than one boutique has what you’re looking for, then maybe visit two or three places. Ask as many questions as you need, we love weddings, brides and everything that goes hand in hand with getting married. We’re here to help you. You want to be looking at ordering your dress with your chosen boutique around 10-12 months before your wedding date, bear in mind that lead times have significantly increased in the last 12 months. This will give you a comfortable time frame to have your dress made and for alterations to be completed. Emma Castle | Shade Bridal Boutique | www.shadebridal.co.uk 75

#TRENDING

What type of bridal make-up is likely to be trending in summer 2022? I’m absolutely loving this year’s bridal make-up trend: neutral tones, bronzed cheeks with dewy skin – modern meets soft glam! These tones are perfect for all skin tones too, so there’s a version for everyone. Skin Flawless skin is definitely on trend. Fresh and youthful looks are popular instead of matte finishes. It’s all about the glow think: dewy foundations and highlighters in golden tones to accentuate your skin. Don’t go too heavy with the products, as they can cause flashback on your photographs.

FEELING THE HEAT

I’m getting married in July and given the soaring summer temperatures in recent years, I’m worried about overheating in my gown. What should I bear in mind when dress shopping? Being open minded helps when deciding the right dress for your wedding. Soft, romantic A-lines or column styles are definitely the way forward for brides worrying about overheating in their gowns. Anything with too many layers such as ballgown styles, especially in heavy fabrics such as thick Mikado, can add extra weight to the gown. Tighter fitted dresses can sometimes be more restrictive and cause chaffing. Some designers such as Madi Lane Bridal have beautiful satin linings in them designed to keep you cool, while ÉLYSÉE gowns have lovely stretch linings meaning it’s easier to walk and sit in. Justin Alexander also has lovely lightweight crepe styles, which are easy to walk in but still look just as fabulous as other gowns. Amy Maher | Bellamme Bridal | www.bellammebridal.co.uk 76

Eyes Fluffy and fuller brows are popular, giving that laminated effect along with chocolate eyeliner rather than black to complement this look and define your eyes! If you’re lucky enough to have great eye space, then an eyeliner flick is also on trend this year. Add sparkle to your eyeshadow on the lid with golden tones to match the neutral colours; and don’t forget lashes. Fluffy lashes, especially accent lashes which get longer towards the outer corner of the eye, are big this year and helps to create that cat-eye effect! Lips A deep nude lip tone adds to the modern soft glam look perfectly. Or for spring/summer weddings, a pink lip will brighten your look, it’s timeless and never goes out of fashion – remember to add a gloss too! I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 81

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
